ORTHODONTICS AT 30,000 FEET From Dr. Chamberlain’s Desktop

E

very once in a while I get the chance to talk to a stranger on the airplane coming or going in my travels. A few weeks ago, I had that chance while traveling from Dr. Thomas Chamberlain Buffalo, NY back to Phoenix. As part of our travels, our conversation inevitably came to, “So, what do you do for work?” I always love this question because I feel passionate about what I do and I often feel compelled to tell people what I can do for them to help them in their lives. This was no different.

However, the gentleman didn’t seem to understand the differences between a dentist who does orthodontics and an Orthodontic Specialist. I explained to him that an Orthodontic Specialist has attended two to three more years of education beyond dental school to be taught proper orthodontic techniques, while a dentist who does orthodontics does not have that extensive specialized training.

He also inquired how to find a good Orthodontist in his

community. I explained to him that with today’s use of reviews on the internet, it is now possible to get a much clearer and true picture of an orthodontic office and how people feel about the doctor and staff. Although reviews don’t negate the need to ‘see for yourself’’ when you schedule an appointment (I’ll talk more about that in a moment), but reviews do let you glance into other peoples, non-biased experiences with that office. It’s easy to find reviews on any dentist or orthodontist. Just Google search, “Orthodontics in Chandler, AZ,” “Braces in Chandler, AZ,” or “Orthodontists in Chandler, AZ.” Google is very strict on how reviews are given and you can be certain the reviews are legitimate.

Just like a good friend who reviews a movie or gives a review on a local restaurant, an orthodontic review page gives good insight into whether the office is creating fans. Our conversation then turned to other things. However, the discussion sparked some insights that I will share at the next issue.

Wisdom teeth removal

Wisdom teeth are almost certain to cause problems if left in place. This is particularly true of impacted wisdom teeth, such problems may occur suddenly and often at the most inconvenient time. Proactive Attitude is Key to a Smooth First Day of High School

When Stasy Click’s 17-year-old daughter Lauren heads to Corona del Sol High School on Monday, Aug. 4, she is confident her first day of class will go smoothly.

That’s because in the weeks leading up to the first day, Stasy and Lauren will be busy getting her books, paying any needed fees and getting as organized as they can.

Stasy also knows that on the first day of school, she will avoid Corona del Sol’s parking lot like the plague.

“If you can avoid driving your kid to school, avoid it, and if you have to, remember that only the senior lot off of Rural Road has parent drop-off and pick-up; the large junior lot off Knox Road is only for buses and visitor parking.”

Janey Morgan, a geography teacher at Corona del Sol High School, said

that a proactive approach is definitely needed for a successful start to the school year.

“Before the first day of school, parents should go to the school’s site; it’s really good and thorough and has lots of information about academics and athletics and how to check grades,” Morgan said.

For incoming freshman and older students who are new to the school, Morgan strongly recommends the two-day Camp Corona on July 29 and 30.

“It’s a few hours each day, and it gives students the chance to learn the ropes and see their classes,” Morgan said.

Groups of 25 to 30 students work with two teachers during the camp.

Chandler’s Sheep Farmers Though it’s hard to imagine, as recently as the 1990s several large sheep herds called Chandler home. Sheep ranching was a lucrative business in the early 1900s, and by 1934, more than 42,000 heads were being raised in Chandler, producing more than 2 million pounds of wool. The Andersens, Auzas, Etchamendys, Eramuzpes and Thudes all had huge herds in West Chandler. East Valley Moms Back-to-School Immunizations and Physicals

By Tracy House Schools have been working all summer to welcome the kiddos back through the classroom doors and to ensure the pupils are walking through those doors healthy, it might be a good time to schedule that back-to-school physical and verify the kids are up to date on their immunizations.

Dr. Jessica Regnaert, a family practice physician with Banner Health Group, offered some timely suggestions for keeping the kids healthy.

Beginning with students just starting out in kindergarten, Regnaert said, “It’s very important, especially prior to starting kindergarten, to make sure that they’re up-to-date on their immunizations and safe when they go back to school.”

“We talk to them about everything from grades, how are they doing in school, to what are their future career plans, and are they dating, are they being safe. So much general health stuff.”

Regnaert said she hopes parents see the doctors as a back up and an advocate for them.

“That’s an age where we like them to come in and realize that a relationship with their doctor is something they’re going to have over their whole lifetime—it’s good to start building that relationship so that way they can get to know us, trust us and share any concerns they have healthwise.”

Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad

You probably wouldn’t recognize my kitchen table on Sunday mornings.

It’s pretty fun to look at, though. Old recipe boxes are stacked on top of each other. Mounds of heritage recipes that I’ve researched, collected and categorized fill the tabletop from corner to corner. Then the organizing begins.

The pile that’s always the highest is the “gotta make it now” category.

Because of your family stories and kitchen memories attached to these recipes, Sunday mornings for me have become rich and rewarding “play dates” that I relish.

This week I reached through my paper trove to open the diary that I kept while on the road rescuing recipes a few years ago. Out fell a sheet of paper and along with it the memory of Tucsonan Selina Ramos, who had emailed me about her family’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad recipe.

Her note mentioned that it’s

perfect as a picnic salad or a tomatoless salsa for chip dipping. I stuck it on the “gotta make it now” pile and made it later in the day. This salad is really delicious because it has that fantastic southwestern flavor of grilled corn off the cob. The variety of hot chillies and bell peppers add a lot of flavor, and the hint of cumin brings it all together. I had never thought of grilling jicama before, but it was wonderful in this combination.

Selina’s got the right idea with this dish being a great picnic or backyard barbecue salad because it transports and holds up well in the heat.

In fact, it can be eaten warm right from the skillet or chilled.

Selina’s Southwestern Grilled Corn and Chili Salad

2 tablespoons olive oil 4 large fresh ears of corn 1 poblano or hatch chili, chopped fine 1 large jalapeño pepper, chopped fine 1 red bell pepper, diced 1 yellow bell pepper, diced 1 cup chopped jicama 1 bunch green onions, sliced thin (about 7 onions) 1 teaspoon ground cumin 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped fine Juice of 1/2 lemon (or juice of 1 large lime) 1 teaspoon garlic salt or sea salt 1 teaspoon fresh ground pepper

In a large skillet, heat olive oil on medium high heat. Slice corn from the husks and cook in olive oil until kernels become browned. (Caution, kernels can pop slightly.) Note: You can also grill corn on the husk until blackened, then slice off the kernels and add to skillet. Proceed to next step.

Turn heat to high and to the corn add chillies, bell peppers, jicama, green onions and cumin, stirring constantly. Cook for 2-3 minutes.

Pour mixture into serving bowl. Toss in cilantro, lemon or lime juice, garlic salt or sea salt and pepper.

Training Successor Management Why Should You Be Concerned About Training Successor Management

Many business succession plans focus on the succession of ownership but neglect to address the issue of management succession. Whether you expect the management team that will follow you in the corner office to come from inside or outside the company, you should consider training one or several people to serve as interim or successor management.

This can serve multiple purposes.

First, having trained successor management in the business can work into your short-term contingency plan established to cover your unexpected absence from the business (due to death, for instance).

Second, trained successor management can serve as interim management in the transition period

Ensure the Smooth Transition Responsibilities When you take a proactive position and train one or more people to assume management responsibilities, you can provide valuable coaching in the business and the industry it operates in. You will be able to explain the nuances of running your business as well. If you plan to keep your business indefinitely, a successor manager can be groomed over a period of time leading up to your retirement or withdrawal. If you plan to sell your business, successor management can be invaluable during the transition period when ownership changes hands.

Where to Begin You may want to evaluate all potential candidates and identify strengths and weaknesses. In weighing potential candidates, you will need to identify the skills and traits that are required of the individual filling a specific role. In addition to the candidate’s competency in your business and competitive market, you will want to assess their management, leadership, integrity toward the business and employees and their long-term commitment to the success of the business. Ultimately, the person you entrust your business and employees to should possess personal character that demonstrates high ethical standards and compassion for your employees and leadership skills that will promote teamwork and trust.

Choose a Successor Manager or Team You may have decided already who will take over your company (e.g., your child), but what if your child is still a minor when you pass or lacks the experience to assume the management role? You probably have one or more key employees in the business— those people who are instrumental in producing, marketing or selling your product or service. Their knowledge

and experience can be called upon, and these individuals can be groomed to act as interim management should the need arise. If your child chooses a career path outside your business, your key employees might even become the buyers of your business.

Train Successor Management These are the options for training successor management: • Formal in-house training program: Such a program could include specific goals and timetables for completion.

Rotation among different areas of the company and increased responsibilities can provide exposure to all aspects of the company. If your business is a family business, it is important to allow your successor the opportunity to develop leadership skills and to gain the respect of employees using his or her abilities and talents rather than through family relationships.

• Outside development: If your child is your chosen successor manager, it might be a good idea to arrange for training outside of your business. Such a plan might include formal education in college or graduate school programs.

Employment in another company can be valuable, as it allows the child to grow and mature outside the family business environment (it allows for early career mistakes to be made elsewhere).
