HALLOWEEN IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, SO COLLEGE TIMES DECIDED TO SPOOK OUR READERS WITH FACTS ABOUT SOME OF ARIZONA’S MOST HAUNTED SPOTS. WHAT’S THAT? YOU’RE NOT AFRAID OF GHOSTS? YOU’LL BE SLEEPING WITH THE LIGHTS ON TONIGHT AFTER LEARNING ABOUT SOME OF THESE PARANORMAL ENCOUNTERS.

NAU’s Morton Hall is nearly a century old, so it’s bound to have witnessed some stuff. One of the saddest memories is of a heartbroken student named Kathy who hanged herself in a stairwell during winter break in the early 1950’s. Depending on the source, Kathy was either abandoned by her family or lost a boyfriend in the armed forces during combat. These days, Kathy’s spirit is attributed with flickering lights, malfunctioning electronics and blankets being pulled off the bed.

WHEN YOU VISIT THE JEROME GRAND HOTEL, KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR CLAUDE THE MAINTENANCE MAN Perhaps one of the most mysterious deaths at the Jerome Grand Hotel is that of Claude Harvey, the hospital’s maintenance man who was found pinned under the Otis elevator in 1935. While an elevator death doesn’t sound too mysterious, it was determined the cause of death wasn’t the elevator. It was never known if the “accidental” death was a jump to suicide or murder. Since the incident, guests and staff have reported seeing and hearing Harvey at work in the stairwells and boiler room.

THESE GUESTS NEVER CHECK OUT The Copper Queen in Bisbee is well known for its three residence ghosts. Just ask the team from “Ghost Hunters.” Mischievous little Billy died in a nearby river and now steals coins and jumps on sofas.

Julia Lowell, a former prostitute that took her own life, pays special attention to male guests, and a mysterious bearded man wearing a top hat and a black cape leaves the scent of cigar smoke in his wake.

THE BIRDCAGE THEATRE WAS NO STRANGER TO DEATH

A BROKEN HEART HAUNTS HOTEL SAN CARLOS The Downtown Phoenix hotel was open for less than two months when 22-year-old Leone Jensen jumped to her death on May 7, 1928.

After finding out the bell boy from the Westward Ho no longer wanted to marry her, the “pretty blonde” threw herself from the seventh floor. It is said she can be seen walking down the hallway and up the stairs leading to the roof.

There are over 140 bullet holes on the walls of Tombstone’s Birdcage Theatre, and at least 26 people died inside during gun or knife fights.

One of the crueler murders was between prostitutes Margarita and Gold Dollar. After finding Margarita flirting with gambler Billy Milgreen, Gold Dollar stabbed Margarita in the chest multiple times with a double-edged stiletto knife. Without the murder weapon, no charges were ever filed. The stiletto was found 100 years later and is now on display. Today, visitors to the theater have reported hearing music playing, cards shuffling and multiple spirits walking around.

Originally named the San Marcos Hotel, the Crowne Plaza San Marcos was built in the early 1910’s and hosted a few famous names.

Today, staff of the hotel claim to receive phone calls from rooms and extensions that no longer exist. Additionally, the ghost of a woman can be seen in certain areas of the hotel and a man’s moaning can occasionally be heard from empty areas of the building.

TAKE A GHOST TOUR AT THE ORPHEUM THEATRE THIS MONTH The Orpheum Theatre will be hosting ghost tours from October 28 through October 31. Learn about the evidence, stories of ghost sightings and facts about the historic theatre during the spookiest time of the year. There’s a chance you’ll see Mattie, the infamous ghost of Orpheum Theatre. She has been sighted multiple times wearing mid20th century clothing around the balcony.

LOTS OF CRYING OVER SPILLED SPAGHETTI The Old Spaghetti Factory on Central was formerly a furniture store and private residence with a pretty gloomy past. Both customers and staff claim to have seen a female ghost in the basement and an old man floating through the hallways looking for someone. Other diners have reported hearing whispers, screams and sobs.

CASEY MOORE’S HOUSED A WELL-KNOWN ARIZONA FAMILY . . . WHO NEVER LEFT Before it was Casey Moore’s Oyster House, the building on Ninth Street and Ash Avenue in Tempe belonged to William and Mary Moeur, who both lived and died in their home. Many residents have reported seeing a couple dancing in the window upstairs thought to be the Moeurs. Other ghostly incidents attributed to them include flying silverware and swinging chandeliers.

It turns out, William and Mary aren’t the only ghosts in residence at Casey Moore’s. A young woman is said to have been strangled upstairs, in what is now the dining room, by a jealous lover. Sarah, as the ghost is called, is said to appear to staff of the restaurant and bar late at night.

1 LON IS KEEPING HIS NAMESAKE While the whole property of Paradise Valley’s Hermosa Inn is reportedly haunted, the restaurant, Lon’s, is apparently especially so. Named after the original owner, Alonzo “Lon” Megargee, the restaurant is known for its fine cuisine. However, visitors and even some staff have claimed to have seen Lon himself in the bar and foyer wearing a cowboy outfit. Lon is a friendly ghost, but very much prefers closed doors and will shut them any time he sees them open.

Sometimes, because it gives me a rush of adrenaline. I kind of enjoy that because sometimes I’m very lethargic or slow, so it just brings that pop in me. So yes.

Do you enjoy being scared? Why or why not?

Not all at. I don’t like being scared. My friends asked me to go to Fear Farm [but] I don’t like to pay for being scared. It’s not my thing.

Why do you think people enjoy scaring themselves and one another?

I completely understand if they do [want to scare others]. I sometimes play jokes on other people.

I don’t think that’s like a bad thing, nothing negative. The reason, in my opinion, just creates something new and some sort of energy that didn’t exist before.

Do you believe in ghosts?

Why or why not?

I do. It’s something that you can’t explain, so sometimes I just put [those inexplicable things] toward ghosts.

I don’t believe in negative energy. I believe everything is positive because if it was negative, then it would be [something] different.

Why do you think people enjoy scaring themselves and one another?

I think it’s kind of a cool trick. I mean they must be tougher than I am. Some people enjoy being scared.

I don’t. But I enjoy some things my friends might not enjoy.

Do you believe in ghosts?

Why or why not?

No, I feel there is an explanation for things that we haven’t figured out yet. People might be just over-reacting to things, but there is no actual evidence for ghosts existing.

Why do trick-or-treaters and Halloween party-goers put on a costume to celebrate carved pumpkins, ghosts and the obscenity of pop culture?

The idea of Halloween began to take root in America in the 19th Century through the traditions of Irish and Scottish immigrants who brought to the New World a mixture of their culture and annual traditions.

It was nearly universally agreed upon that the end of summer signaled a time to interact with the spirits of the world. This caused people to dress up as those spirits and behave differently than in everyday life, according to Laura Rosenfeld of Tech Times.

However, today, dressing up in costumes has evolved into a key aspect of Halloween.

Whether you are walking around in someone else’s clown shoes or ruby red slipper knock-offs, the idea of wearing a costume on Halloween has a much deeper meaning behind all the masks. Halloween costumes allow people to dress as someone else for the night, freeing them of any preconceived notions and judgment.

Psychology professor Sally Foster from the University of Miracosta in California questions an individual’s choice of their costume. In an interview with WCPO Cincinnati, she analyzed evil costumes, which are often popular during this time of the year.

According to Foster, “Evil costumes allow people to safely and even creatively express their dark side without guilt.”

Just because someone wears a “Scream” mask on Halloween does not necessarily mean they want to become a murderer themselves.

Costumes also have more to do with their inner desires and fears. Dr. Carole Lieberman, a psychiatrist on the clinical faculty of UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute states in Psychology Today that “by dressing up as the things they are most scared of, [some] people try to feel as though they have mastered their fears.”

This no-rules, fright-filled night gives just about everyone permission to be whoever and whatever they desire based on their likes, dislikes, fears and aspirations. With that in mind, choose your Halloween costume wisely. Your costume decisions say more about you than you think.

he gift of sharing new music is powerful. As a DJ, it’s what you do for a living—use music to leave a lasting impression on listeners.

This sounds like a dream for a lot of college students. Sitting in a room with a microphone and picking music for yourself and others to listen to every day. The rewards seem fulfilling, but they don’t come easily.

In Malcolm Brinkley’s years at Arizona State University’s Blaze 1330 AM, he worked on crafting his mixes, perfecting his voice, and most importantly, bringing a vibrant positivity to the station. During his time with the college station he DJ’ed at ASU events and brought on comedians like Marlon Wayans and Jay Pharoah from “Saturday Night Live,” as well as plenty of local acts.

Brinkley graduated in May 2015, and is now a late-night DJ for iHeartRadio station 104.7 KISS FM. Aside from his regular gig, he works on his own personal projects, including organizing the One Love Music and Arts Festival this past April and curating an upcoming event series. You could say the grind never ends.

“I find myself going the extra mile,” Brinkley says.

“Where you stop, I’m going to keep going.”

According to Brinkley, there really isn’t a direct formula to make it as a DJ. Like any job, much of your performance has to do with your mindset.

However, he did share with us some of the biggest lessons he has learned.

CONFIDENCE AND AUTHENTICITY Things don’t always start off easy.

“You have these abstract ideas and ideas of how you want things to go, but you might not have that direction,” Brinkley says.

But having confidence in your personality as a DJ is one of the first things Brinkley worked on. Standing out, whether that was in his music choices, work ethic or brand, was all up to him and his choices and he knew that.

The DJ scene is already a crowded market, much of it made up of people trying to follow trends or get mainstream attention. What matters more is how genuine someone is in their craft;

there’s a lot of value to be found in that.

For Brinkley, it began with wanting to dismiss stereotypes that are so often put on young black men. He saw how he could be able to do that through the power of sharing music.

“When you are progressive, you are truly caught between category and definition, and people and society are so mad because they can’t pin you,” he says.

saw his confidence as a DJ develop in real time. In an environment that limits ambition and resorts to categorization, he sought out to defy stereotypes and take pride in himself.

“It’s taken me four years, I’ve been out here since 2011.

But first it started with confidence and loving myself.”

Sometimes in radio, you have to play certain mainstream tracks. But when you’re starting out, the music opportunities are boundless.

Though early on in college he was playing hip-hop, recently Brinkley has been gravitating more towards house music. As long as it’s forward thinking, it could end up on one of his mixes.

“That’s how I evolved. It turned into something where I saw I could really change lives, I could really share experiences and emotions.”

The results didn’t come instantaneously, but he was consistent with the amount of product he was putting out and it eventually worked.

“People love to listen to Top 40 stations and that’s great, but they also want to hear something new, something genuine, something with real substance,” Brinkley says.

SURROUND YOURSELF IN POSITIVITY Brinkley first started out DJing after a peer invited him to join the Blaze in his freshman year of journalism school.

It was then that he found his place behind the microphone.

“Without him, I would not be where I am,” he said. “I don’t

think I would ever consider radio.”

Now Brinkley wants to carry on that good deed and help find more good people to populate the airwaves.

“Phoenix is such a new breeding ground for creatives,” he says. “I just want to be at the forefront of that, in regards to giving people the opportunity to create and collaborate in an open, encouraging environment.”

While a positive environment is helpful for gaining ground as a DJ, so is the knowledge that there is always room to learn. Receiving feedback from those he cares about, and strangers who took time to listen, helped take Brinkley’s DJing to better places.

However, for Brinkley, the best criticism comes from self-reflection, and recognizing that there are always ways

to improve what you do.

“After anything I do, whether it’s events, mixes, photos, videos, I love hitting the drawing board at the end and saying, ‘What worked and what didn’t work?’” Brinkley says. “And I do look forward to seeing what didn’t work. It’s not pessimism—it’s learning.”

PUT IN THOSE HOURS DJing is a strange blend of personality and technical skills. Making a smooth transition during a mix or having a recognizable on-air voice doesn’t happen naturally. It comes through practice.

“I’m a firm believer in 10,000 hours. It can be stressful. You’re going to get tired,” Brinkley says. “The grind and being ambitious is not easy.”

After he got his college-radio start, he began looking at other ways to improve as a

radio personality. He interned at iHeartRadio Mix 96.9, cutting audio, giving out concert tickets and getting to learn from other radio mentors.

Soon enough he would be hired part-time by a station, then start working full-time right before graduation.

So though promotional efforts, music choice or gear helped to create a DJ, it’s the amount of work that Brinkley put in that makes him truly stand out. He didn’t get comfortable just doing one thing.

“I have an idea of where I want to be and what I want to be like,” Brinkley says. “If I have any breath in me, I’m going to keep working to get there. Why stop?”

This is a rare, actual-nightmare fueling experience built by an indie developer. After a plane crash, the player is trapped in the middle of nowhere surrounded by pale mockeries of humanity. The player has to survive each day by finding food, building a shelter and fighting off hordes of mutants with more limbs than they deserve. As an openworld game, there are bound to be bugs and glitches, but the creator consistently improves the experience with constant updates.

FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY’S (2014)

Sometimes the simplest game can be the most effective.

Five Nights at Freddy’s puts you in the chair of a late night security guard watching over a children’s pizza restaurant. The only problem is that the animatronic animals tend to wander the halls on their own. The series has become a phenomenon in the horror game community due to it’s minimal design yet paranoia-inducing jumpscares.

AMONG THE SLEEP (2014)

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare. In this game, you play a infant whose house is invaded by supernatural forces.

Armed only with an upsettingly conscious teddy bear, you have to find your mother as the

world becomes increasingly surreal. The game is discomforting and foreboding, driving home your weakness as a small child facing demonic forces.

Overall, this indie project has a lot of good ideas and implements them well.

OUTLAST (2013)

Loosely based on true events, Outlast challenges you to investigate the decaying halls of a remote psychiatric hospital where the patients were subjected to ruthless experiments.

Outlast has some of the most solid gameplay of any horror game, handing you a camcorder with limited battery life and giving you the ability to quickly see behind you as you run away from the more unruly patients.

Dead Space was a launch title for the PlayStation 3 and holds

up as one of the most popular horror games released on any console. The player takes control of Isaac Clarke, a ship systems engineer who fights his way through the starship Ishimura to find his girlfriend. He didn’t expect to encounter an alien species called Necromorphs that infect and mutate the corpses of humans. This game was innovative for its twist on conventional heads-up displays and the “strategic dismemberment” mechanic that required players to brutally mutilate the Necromorphs in order to finish them off.

The Birds (1963) A wealthy San Francisco socialite moves to a small Northern California town, but soon regrets her decision. It isn’t long before birds of all kinds begin to attack the townspeople in increasing numbers and with increasing viciousness.

The film is directed by the one and only, Alfred Hitchcock, and stars Rod Taylor, Tippi He-

dren and Suzanne Pleshette.

Night of The Living Dead (1968) This movie was really the start of the zombie apocalypse genre. A group of people hide from blood-crazed zombies in a farm house, but that might not be all they are hiding from. There are also underlying social messages of media, racism and paranoia which could very well be just as terrifying as the undead themselves. This film is directed by George A. Romero and stars Duane Jones, Judith O’Dea and Karl Hardman.

The Exorcist (1973) When a teenage girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the

help of two priests to save her daughter. The movie is so haunting, there are numerous tales of odd things happening on set, including nine deaths from people involved in the production of “The Exorcist.”

The film was directed by William Friedkin and stars Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow and Linda Blair.

Jaws (1975) Now that summer is over, “Jaws” is safe to watch again— you’ll probably be over your fear by the time May 2016 rolls around. When a gigantic great white shark begins to terrorize the small island community of Amity, a police chief, a marine scientist and a fisherman set out to put an end to the monster. “Jaws”

is directed by the famous Steven Spielberg and the stars include Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss.

The Shining (1980) As if an evil Jack Nicholson is scary enough, let’s throw in some deadly hedge mazes, elevators full of blood, terrifying Room 237, and the iconic scene of the Grady twins.

Stephen King’s classic book made it to the big screen for a thriller about a family who lives in an isolated hotel for the winter. An evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings of the future. Directed

that first three days was the tip of the mountain. It’s pretty much downhill from there.”

Head Ned sees the decline in interest as an opportunity to refine their work and figure out a long-term plan.

“It’s hard to have too much of a plan right now. We’re still testing the waters,” he says.

Because of the initial success, Okilly Dokilly is now a medium-level band with upcoming performances in Flagstaff and cities in California.

With no manager, they’re still a very independent group that makes their own decisions.

“I like keeping it that way too,” says Head Ned. “I don’t like people being able to tell me what to do.”

THE AFTERMATH

At first, no one understood the idea, compelling Head Ned to organize a photo shoot and release their demo tape for the sake of publicity. The photos, taken by Head Ned’s girlfriend, went up on their Facebook on August 10, 2015, followed by their Bandcamp page. They didn’t suspect the storm of popularity that was to come.

“Once we put them online, the whole Internet wanted it,” he says.

In just three days, their Facebook page received 16,758 likes and reached over 26,000 by the end of August. It was safe to say that the band had become viral even before their first live performance.

Soon, large-scale news sites like Time, Billboard and Playboy picked up the story, calling

them “the metal band you never knew you needed” and a “stupid sexy Phoenix rock band.”

“The instantaneousness of it was a shock for us,” says Head Ned. “Suddenly your face is everywhere.”

Their first show was at Rebel Lounge on September 25, and the place was completely filled.

“It’s weird to have your first show sell out. You miss the development phase, testing what works live. In some parts we were flying blind.”

move in his own direction.

“I got jaded by doing that constantly,” he says.

Late last year, he started thinking of fun projects to break the rut.

“Me and my drummer were just joking around, trying to come up with goofy names,” says Head Ned. In that couch conversation, Okilly Dokilly was born as well as the new genre: “Nedal.”

The joke continued to snowball, and by November 2014, he and the other band members were making songs together. Okilly Dokilly came to consist of Head Ned on vocals, Bled Ned on drums, Thread Ned on bass, Stead Ned on Guitar and Red Ned on synth.

For inspiration on songs, Head Ned would scour the Internet for funny quotes from the character that “sound even slightly ominous” and then watch the episode for inspiration.

Take for instance the famous quote, “Feels like I’m wearing nothing at all,” from season 11 of the show.

“Taken out of context and screamed, it sounds very heavy,” Head Ned explains.

ost people don’t get the opportunity to experience Internet fame in their lifetime. For the few who do, it’s a surreal and often brief experience.

Recently, the local, comedic heavy metal band Okilly Dokilly made it big on the world wide web after posting their photos and demo songs.

“We didn’t think it was going to be huge. It was just a fun side project,” says Head Ned, the lead mustachioed vocalist of the group. He asked that he, and the rest of the group, all be referred to only as their on-stage characters.

Okilly Dokilly is a Phoenix-based group that makes moshable tunes inspired by the straight-laced “Simpsons” character, Ned Flanders.

Within a few weeks, the band gained online renown for their gimmick, attracting laymen and news media alike.

This popularity, however, came as a surprise for the small-time group who made the band as a hobby.

hen Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington was growing up in the Valley, he couldn’t wait to leave the state.

He, by his own admission, was bullied in school and needed a change.

“I couldn’t wait to get the hell out of Phoenix and do something different,” Bennington says during a recent phone interview.

“At the same time, there are elements of Arizona that call to me and that I have to have.

I need to go see it. Being in Phoenix doesn’t get me excited; being in Arizona gets me super excited.”

Bennington explains that Valley residents should get out

of the area and further explore Arizona.

“If you live in Arizona and you don’t go running around that state all the time, you’re an idiot,” Bennington says.

“It’s one of the most beautiful places on Earth. It’s incredible.

That’s the part of Arizona that I love—the Native American culture and history; Hispanic culture and history. I always wanted to be Mexican growing up. It’s one of those funny things. Arizona, as a state, holds a good spot for me.”

Despite his feelings about the Valley, Bennington and Linkin Park will return to play Tempe’s Monster Mash Music Festival with Rob Zombie, Deftones and others November 1.

“It’s not going to suck,” says Bennington, upon hearing the lineup.

“You can expect from us two hours or so of Linkin Park—a Linkin Park extravaganza. I don’t know what that means,” he adds with a laugh.

Seriously, Bennington says, Linkin Park has been firing on all cylinders, playing songs from each album on its tour.

“We’ve got a solid set,” says Bennington, who adds that Linkin Park is working on new material. “The production’s really cool. We just kind of roll from one song to another. We play a ton of songs. It’s not like a two-hour set by The Who, where they play eight songs.

How do they play eight songs

in two hours? We cram pretty much everything in there.”

That includes songs from Hybrid Theory, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary.

Bennington is still coming to grips with this.

“Of course I can believe it,” he says. “My kid’s in college.

This is crazy. I don’t know what the hell is happening. It’s gone by very quickly.”

Playing the same songs for 15 years can get a bit tedious, but Bennington has a fail-safe method to keep it fresh.

“I have amnesia so every day is brand new,” he says snarkily. “I have no idea what happened yesterday. I wake up and think, ‘Oh cool. This is where I live? I like it.’

“I also wake up and say, ‘Dude, my wife is hot!’ That’s every day. I wake up every morning and I read this book about my life. I read it. I figure it out and I’m pretty stoked about it. I go to bed, wake up tomorrow and I have no idea what to expect.”

ith the release of its fifth studio album, American Candy, the Tempe-bred band The Maine is experiencing a rebirth of sorts.

“I feel like ever since the release of the record, it’s the beginning of a whole new chapter,” says drummer Pat Kirch.

The chapter continues with the School D’AZ musical festival at the Mesa Amphitheatre on Saturday, October 24.

“I don’t think if this was two years ago, we would have been on this festival playing the Mesa Amphitheatre,” Kirch says. “It feels like it’s the beginning of a brand new thing for us. It feels like the possibilities of where we can go and what can happen are endless.”

The Maine made the “big reveal” of the new

music during a show last spring at Marquee Theatre. The album had been under wraps, so much so that the musicians didn’t tell a soul that they were working on new tracks.

“We recorded in the middle of the desert in California in Joshua Tree,” he says. “We rented this giant house in the middle of the desert and recorded up there for a month.

“We got off the Internet. For two to three months we weren’t using any social media or our website. It was nice to get back to the only thing we had to focus on, which was the songs.”

The secretive process helped build excitement within the band, which formed eight years ago.

“It feels fresh and exciting,” he says. “There are so many things we

haven’t had a chance to do that we want to do.

There is tons of excitement around the band right now.”

They may have a new sound, but you shouldn’t expect The Maine to shun its past.

“We’re going to play a bit off of all the records,” he says. “I think we’ll probably play the exact amount of songs off all the records. I think this particular tour will be a good representation of everything that we’ve done as a band.”
