Student Life >>> Generational Gentlemen College Times staff What makes a man a gentleman? The term means different things to different people, but does it mean different things to different generations?

We asked four men, ages 6, 21, 33 and 52, a few questions about love, life and the pursuit of manliness.

Jack Worthington, 6 Jack Worthington is an adorable, fun loving, soccer-playing six-yearold. He is the youngest of three siblings, including two older (and quite boisterous) sisters. Whether he’s playing with his beloved Legos, being tortured into some form of dress-up or stomping around the house with a toy truck in hand, Jack is never one to shy from a good adventure.

What is a gentleman?

A gentleman is someone who is a man and is responsible and helps girls by carrying them and being nice to them and treating them with respect.

What does it mean to love somebody?

Love means you do a lot of kind things like hugs and kisses.

For example, I love my mom because I hug and kiss her and she deserves sweetness from me.

How do mommies and daddies fall in love?

You start off as a teenager and then you know each other and then you date each other and then, if you’re lucky, you can get married.

Do you think that process usually goes fast or slow?

I don’t know what time the wedding starts.

What does it mean to be chivalrous?

Like when you’re scared or cold. Wait, I thought you meant shiver!

What do you think the difference is between boys and girls?

Girls have girl toys and boys don’t. Boys have boy toys and girls don’t. Girls think that they’re friends with boys but boys don’t. Girls think that love is awesome and boys think that love is disgusting.

Do you want to be in love one day?

Not yet! I’ll get a girlfriend one year. Maybe I’ll play with her. Maybe we’ll go to the park together.

What advice do you have for someone that wants to get a girlfriend one day?

To tell them, “You’re the beautifulest girl in the world and you’re the nicest friend in the world.”

Jake Stelman, 21 Jake Stelman is a full-time ASU student and part-time employee.

When he’s not working his butt off at work or school, he bikes around town in his spare time.

Stelman slowed down to answer a few questions.

When you were young, who did you look up to?

Family figures like my mom, dad and sister. I looked up to sports figures as well. For example, Lance Armstrong, until the truth was unveiled.

Who personifies a masculine ideal for you?

My uncle, actually. He was a jack-of-all-trades and a master of a few. He just does it all. He can build and do business.

What characteristics do you look for in a partner?

Kindness, caring, understanding what it is you do and what is important to you. Can’t be clingy. A little clingy is okay, but too much is not good.

What does it mean to be chivalrous to you?

No discrimination. To be kind, fair and honest towards everyone.

Do you have any advice for other men your age?

Be true to yourself. Find somebody who you look up to.

Be kind to others and don’t be someone you’re not and find a passion.

Do you think the term “gentleman” has changed over the years?

I think so. Women don’t look to guys opening the door for them the same anymore. I feel like you would get a million different reactions from a million different girls.

Like some of them will smile at you, some don’t even acknowledge it. I don’t think it’s the actions as much.

I think it is how you are as an individual. It used to be more you have to do this, you have to get the door.

Otherwise a woman would be offended if you didn’t.

Zac Reynolds, 33 Zac Reynolds is a Phoenix native, a husband, a father, aaaaaand, full disclosure, he works in our office as an ad sales exec. With three little girls (ages 10, 8 and 6) and a little boy that will be 3 in November, he is busy to say the least.

A family man with an affinity to stoner music, Reynolds believes that the key to being a true gentleman is being actively selfless and empathetic toward others. It could be just as easy as letting someone in front of you in line or caring for your family. And while society might have an idea of who men are supposed to be, Reynolds says it’s pretty simple.

When you were younger, who were your idols?

Most of them are astronauts. Guys like John Glenn, Neil Armstrong—I was a big space nerd. I had no desire to be an astronaut but it was something I was always fascinated by as a kid. Looking back it was probably just the uniqueness and the bravery of doing that. If you think about it, these astronauts are strapping themselves into rockets that were used as ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles) that were literally designed to blow up cities and they changed them to launch people into space. To be a guy that says, “Yeah, I’ll do that,” is amazing.

When I say “masculine ideal,” who comes to mind?

This is the dumbest thing, but the first thing that comes to mind is Mark Wahlberg and The Rock.

What characteristics do you look for in a partner? In this case your wife.

She keeps me in check. She’s my best friend. [People think] that you have to like all the same stuff, or you have to change for each other and match your likes, and we have some things in common, but I joke that she likes dirty hobo rock like The Decemberists and Architecture in Helsinki.

It’s mumble music, and I don’t care for it whatsoever. But I’m the Mormon guy that likes all the stoner music like 311, Slightly Stoopid.

What does the word “chivalrous” mean to you?

Respect more than anything else. A lot of time I think it gets dumbed to opening doors for people. It’s small things. It’s having enough respect to put somebody else’s needs—male or female—in front of your own.

Rob Terrel, 52 Rob Terrel has a life’s worth of experience under his belt. As someone of faith, he’s strong of mind and heart. He doled out some serious wisdom for the younger folk.

When you were young, who were your idols?

One was my brother-in-law.

He flew in the United States Air Force and served our country in Vietnam. I guess another, well, I don’t know—you always think about the superheroes because of what they were able to do. I don’t know which one in particular because I wanted to be a different one at different times. When I got older, I found more modern day heroes. William Wallace I would certainty consider a stand-out hero in my mind.

When I say “masculine ideal,” who comes to mind?

Christ. The idea of masculinity has changed, and I have changed my opinions since I’ve gotten older. There is a wrong perception about masculinity in our country.

What characteristics do you look for in a partner?

First, her faith was really important to me. Second, her family life. Who was she in and outside of her family?

How did she relate to her brothers, sisters, mom and dad? What were her values and morals? One thing I always looked at was her mother. I knew she would be at least a big percentage of her mother. How did her mother treat her father, her children, and how did she react to situations? And obviously an attraction. None of that started until there was an attraction.

What does the word “chivalrous” mean to you?

I think the most important element to chivalry is to not just place women, but everyone around you, ahead of yourself. No matter what the circumstance is. [It’s] how to make people the most comfortable and helping people do things they cant do on their own, [like] providing for others. Placing their needs over your own.

We not only need to teach this, but show this to younger generations.

Do you have any advice for younger men?

Yes, I have lots of advice for younger men. Find a mentor that will teach you how to be a man. Younger men don’t understand they need to find somebody to teach them and walk them through how to be a man. I think mentorship is a lost art. Men need to find mentorship to learn. I taught my sons to value and protect, not just women, but others around them and to put a high value on the safety and comfort of others. [Also], don’t fall victim to allowing other variables or different lifestyles change what is right. If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for everything. Find a mentor that will show and create those values and stand strong.

LifeSafe App hopes to stop crime before it happens Julia Thatcher • College Times

In this tech savvy world we live in, most things can be done virtually. Among them now is keeping safe when you’re out. In an effort to keep students safe, ASU and other colleges are promoting the new LiveSafe App, which allows a variety of features to ensure safety.

Different from every other safety app on the market right now, it only allows you to alert police and friends of your exact location. LiveSafe features include an interactive map that shows nearby hospitals, schools, safety places such as police and fire departments, a public crime report of the area, and tips from LiveSafe and other people using the app in regards to your location from the past seven days.

Based on location, it gives the user the option to connect with the nearby university to receive reports and updates straight form the university and nearby city officials.

You can add people you know who have the app as “friends” and enable GPS location when you are out, see if anyone is close to your location to walk home, or virtually walk home together.

There is a Safe Walk option that shares your location with friends who have the app as you walk. It enables them to see your location, and when you have arrived to your destination, GPS will disengage and they will no longer see where your at.

It also allows you to anonymously submit tips or suspicious persons reports.

And it has a goup chat and video connection for when walking home with other “friends” on the app.

Tips can be sent in regarding suspicious people or vehicles, fights, theft, or harassment. Although tips can be sent in anonymously, authorities and other people still have the option to ask questions and give feedback.

Campuses who are promoting the use of this app have already seen an increase in ten times the number of tips they are receiving, LiveSafe executives say.

Creators of the app are finding that more people feel comfortable reporting situations such as assault and rape in the area because the information is confidential. Yet people are still able to warn other of such attacks.

Saftey tips can be sent in a variety of ways, through text information, audio, video, or pictures.

The map provides an overview of the areas safety places, tips, and reports.

Users have access to this information ranging from the last 24 hours to the last 365 days. In addition to sharing tips with other people using the app, tips can also be sent to individual users or a group.

Co-founded by a Virginia Tech shooting survivor, LiveSafe is being promoted throughout the country as an additional tool to protect and alert students as well as to alert the police.

The idea behind the app following the Virginia Tech tragedy is that if you “see something, say something.” Survivor and co-founder Kristina Anderson was

the second victim in the mass shooting and now uses this experience to work to prevent situations before they happen, or to identify suspects and situations as early as possible.

“We do this because we believe that with the right tools and information, individuals and first-responders will collaborate to build safer communities,” the company says in a press release.

Though the app is being pushed through schools, the interactive map allows all members of the community to update and provide safe tips to neighbors.

Most campuses also have blue response light boxes spread through out campus that allows students to call police to the exact location in case of emergency. The app is said to not replace the alert system, but offer additional tools and better accessibility considering the alert system can always be with you in the form of your cell phone.

LiveSafe says they usually deal with the grey area of concern dealing with not doing anything versus calling the police.

Police can see these safety tips and decide if they need to dispatch patrol cars to the situation. Students who use the app should also understand the safety of being aware of their surroundings as well by not keeping their heads buried in their phone, but up and alert.

LiveSafe is free for download and available for both iPhone and Android.

The app has been adopted and promoted by 24 different universities.

bSafe (free) Selected friends and people can “follow you” to allow them to see the user’s exact GPS location. By pressing the emergency button, the user can alert their group of friends of their exact location. This app also provides the feature of sending video or audio to the police. The premium subscriptions allows for other features, such as having the app place a fake incoming call.

Circle of 6 (free) Select six people to be in your circle. You can alert those six people by pushing a preset button that will let them know you want them to call, text, or to alert that a ride is needed. In case of danger, the app can connect you to the nearest domestic abuse and sexual assault hotlines available in your area.

Guardly (free, premium subscription $1.99) This app allows you to make emergency calls when your phone is locked, as well as alert your loved ones and police in case of emergencies, in addition to campus police.

Red Panic Button ($2.99) By pressing the red panic button, the app will alert those on your panic list with your exact location. It also provides the option of posting a message to your Facebook or Twitter feed.

StaySafe ($6.99) Set the timer for the projected time you are expecting to be home. The app will alert with check-ins when the time is up.

Look for washers equipped with “cold wash” technology, which achieves cold water savings with warm water washing performance. Another way to save water is to try to wash full loads, or if you must wash a partial load, reduce the level of water appropriately to avoid usage of extra water.

• Do your research. Finding home appliances and electronics that are energy efficient is not difficult.

Opinion: Why doesn’t ASU have the ultimate fan base?

Julia Thatcher • College Times Just about everyone across the country by now has seen the power play made by ASU against USC resulting in a Hail Mary to win the game with a final score of 38-34.

Arizona State University finished last year with a devastating loss to Stanford, giving up the coveted spot to compete in the Rose Bowl. After what most considered an unexpected victorious season, Sun Devil Football was put on the map as one of the top schools to look out for in 2014-2015.

Why is it that after ASU’s starting quarterback broke his foot during their third game this season, they were expected to do horribly? Backup quarterback Mike Bercovici was brought in to replace senior Taylor Kelly while his foot healed and has been putting in work to make sure ASU stays at the top.

After losing to undefeated UCLA, which was a projected loss for the Sun Devils, ASU was dropped off the Top 25 completely. Written off, everyone thought there was no way back for ASU, but once again the men of Sun Devil

Football surprised the nation. In 125 years of USC football history, no quarterback has ever thrown for five touchdowns in a single game against them, until now.

It’s a great time to be a Sun Devil fan, but win or lose, those boys deserve the support. It’s a curious thing to see fans rally for the win, and when they need the support, most fans seem to disappear.

Everyone loves the story of the underdog, and ASU is just that team—or are they? After the devastating loss of Kelly (though Kelly is expected to be playing again in “about 6 weeks”), ASU still has one of the top teams in the nation.

So where did all the fans go when the support was needed the most? Fans of Sun Devil Football need to learn how to be true fans and not just don the Gold when a win is expected.

ASU fans can take a cue from teams like The Ohio State and Notre Dame that are known for their outrageous fan base. The only thing better than ASU football should be their fans. While many students camp out days before the game for good seats to see the

Finding support for a top-ranked football team shouldn’t be that of a wave of bandwagon riders but more like a spirit bus full of wild maroon and gold hellions that shouldn’t be crossed.

In the next couple weeks ASU will be playing top teams in the nation including Stanford. Instead of doubting the talents of our team, let the ASU community try a different approach—stay on the “spirit bus” this time and be a part of the Sun Devil mania that has swept the nation.

Student Voices Farewell, but not for good Ana Anguiano • College Times When I first came to Arizona in the fall of 2008, I didn’t know a single person in the entire state.

Ana Anguiano I was coming from a small town in Texas where I had everything going for me, but I honestly just wanted to move somewhere I could see plenty of live music. I had great priorities as an 18-year-old, if you couldn’t tell.

ASU seemed to have everything I wanted, and when I visited the campus and picked up a copy of College Times, I knew I was making the right choice. I poured through the music calendar and started memorizing the venues I wanted to attend.

The paper was my little guide to what was going on in an unfamiliar but exciting town. Without knowing where anything was, I went to shows at Modified Arts and The Rhythm Room by myself because I was just so excited to see all the bands that never came through my town.

Once I was hired on as an intern, it just felt right. The paper I had picked up countless times was now something I could help shape and direct, and that’s pretty much what I’ve been doing for the past three and a half years.

I have been working with amazingly talented writers and designers on a product that I never minded putting in the extra effort for. I’ve done some really weird and fascinating stuff for this job, and it has all pushed me beyond the limits of my comfort zone.

From accosting strangers with weird questions, to camping for the first time at Country Thunder, to spectacularly wrecking in a high-speed go-kart race, every assignment was different and fun.

Working for College Times showed me the best of the Valley, the best of Tempe, and the best of Arizona. I got to meet amazing people with wonderful stories and share in this awesome community.

I hope we have been able to keep that same rambunctious spirit that I fell in love with as a freshman, because there is still nothing better than seeing a crisp new issue after all the ups and downs that come with making it.

I am going to miss just about everything that comes with College Times, but I know that it is in good

Local beers, brats and bands round out annual traditional Tempe Town Lake Oktoberfest celebration Ana Anguiano • College Times Oktoberfest is the most wonderful time of the year! Sure, Christmas has presents and Halloween has candy, but the 42nd annual Four Peaks Oktoberfest at Tempe Town Lake has beer, brats, polka music and rides for three days, so it pretty much trumps all other holidays. Or maybe that’s just need for beer and brats talking.

Oh, and did we mention admission is free?

Tempe Beach Park will light up on Friday, October 10 through Sunday, October 12, so bust out your lederhosen. It is a great event for families and friends to have a relaxing and enjoyable time outdoors.

Bobbi Jones, Oktoberfest event coordinator, says she works with 2,200 volunteers to put together one of the biggest events of the year.

“It’s only through the pure dedication to the community and the mission that this happens every year. I am always so impressed by the expertise that these volunteers come with and put it together when they all have others jobs outside of this special event. I think that’s one of the most motivating things for me,” Jones says.

One of the main goals is to have the event be as local as possible, Jones says.

Four Peaks will be pouring their amazing beer and even the meats you devour will be local this year.

created around the Four Peaks beer by the same name. There will also be a brat eating contest on Sunday if you don’t want to stop at just one.

When Four Peaks throws a party, you know it’s going to be good. They will be pouring their Oktoberfest beer, a Vienna lager, and they will have the elusive Pumpkin Porter available as well.

And since you can’t have a couple drinks without dancing, there will also be live music on three stages with plenty of polka music (a must) and local acts to round out the night.

So make sure to check out Whiskey’s Quicker, Dry River Yacht Club, Bayern Maiden and AZ Blues Company, among others.

To balance out the funnel cakes you gobble up, you can also participate in the das Frank Kush Oktoberfest Foot Race and take your pick of a 10K run, a 5K run or a 5K walk. And you can feel good about the exercise because proceeds will benefit the Frank Kush Youth Foundation for Tempe elementary schools.

You might also want to catch Wiener Mania, where 32 Dachshunds will be racing in eight, four-dog trial heats before advancing to the semi-finals where in only one wiener can reign supreme.

“That is just a hoot,” says Jones. “I have never laughed so hard.”

Cafe Istanbul Hookah Lounge serves up authentic Middle Eastern on-the-go Ana Anguiano • College Times Before you even enter Cafe Istanbul Hookah Lounge, you can smell the wonderfulness wafting out from inside.

A local business and a staple within the Middle Eastern community, their menu is expansive, homemade and delicious.

Located right next to the Apache and Dorsey Light Rail stop, it’s an ideal place to grab authentic Middle Eastern food before getting on the train.

The Apache Boulevard location is actually their second location in Tempe.

Their original spot was on Rural Road and University Drive, but the Apache location has now been open for over a decade.

Owner Randa Ayashe says they still get customers who thought they were long gone, but simply didn’t know they changed locations.

“A lot of people we know from over there we have known since they use to go to school, but now they are married and have kids. It’s really nice to see,” she says.

The business is run within the family and Ayashe says she plans on leaving it to her son, Ali, who already manages the shop and takes care of the business side. But Ayashe is always at the restaurant and everyone that steps in is happy to see her.

“It’s my second home,” she says. “We are here from morning to evening.”

Café Istanbul is the kind of place where everyone knows your name and being a loyal customer makes for a warm dining experience. Patrons come in and greet the staff by their names and it’s clear that they

are comfortable in the space.

A hot-spot for lunch in Tempe, the café no long has a lunch buffet. Instead, they have four specials daily for lunch that are in the $7 to $8 range and change daily. They have lamb, chicken and fish on the menu but their items range widely. This is also the best spot to take anyone with dietary restrictions.

They have menu items to satisfy Kosher, and Halal and vegetarian diets.

Ayashe recommends the Shawrma, grilled lemon chicken, fish served in garlic lemon and basil sauce, and their chicken curry, which she acknowledges is Indian cuisine but still very tasty.

Café Istanbul has a great atmosphere for getting homework done with free Wi-Fi and ample room for study groups to sprawl out.

There is a hookah lounge upstairs separate from the dining area as well as a patio outside to not disturb those eating.

May has been a road warrior since his “LCS” appearance, but his priorities have changed a bit in the last decade, as he discussed with College Times.

College Times: What is your favorite age group to perform for?

May: So many, you know. I am middle aged old man. I like to make them all laugh—white, black, brown. I get off on seeing four grey haired people next to four hipsters that are next to two black people.

That’s my crowd and those are my people.

I have such great audiences.

How have your kids impacted you as a comedian?

Oh man, it made comedy work for the first time. I never thought comedy was work.

When you have kids, everything changes.

Work is what you go away from your home for. It’s what comedy has become.

It was everything and now my kids are the world and everything else is like nothing.

Do your kids get to see your shows?

No, never. I want my kids to enjoy being kids. They don’t need to see or hear that stuff.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

No. Before, I would smoke two joints before a show, but not anymore. I don’t smoke weed anymore. I do nothing before a show.

What do you still hope to accomplish in your career?

I would love to win an Emmy for stand-up comedy. I would love to do more stand-up comedy. I love what I do, do what I love, I have more stuff to do, a whole lot of stuff to do, and I am going to do it.

What are you working on now?

I have two segments coming out on Netflix. One has already been released and the second is going to be recorded November 29.

Why are you excited to come to Tempe?

I have been coming to Tempe Improv for 15 years. I have had nothing but a blast in that town. You can only find Tempe Improv if you take a wrong turn or already know where it is. It’s a little b**** of a place. In Tempe, the girls are smoking hot. Dudes are cool. It’s a great f***in’ town.

MIMFest brings the global experience to the Valley’s front door Christina Caldwell • College Times When you fanaticize about studying abroad, odds are you think about the new cultures you’ll experience, the food you’ll eat and the music you’ll hear. Those vibrant cultures can’t be experienced anywhere else—or can they?

MIMFest, the first-annual music and cultural festival taking place at the Musical Instrument Museum’s 20-acre grounds, is out to change that. The twoday fest is combining international music, food and fun into one giant celebration of everything overseas. And it’ll be oh-soauthentic.

Who says Phoenix doesn’t have culture? If you’ve been craving international flair, MIMFest will have everything your wayward heart desires.

“MIMFest offers a fun and festive opportunity for attendees to discover talented musical acts from around the world,” says Lowell Pickett, artistic director for MIMFest, in a press release.

“The diverse lineup allows guests to experience artists of varying genres and levels of success and we hope this inspires them to continue exploring and appreciating global music.”

They might not be household names in the States, but everywhere else, names like Mali’s Bassekou Kouyaté & Ngoni ba, Ireland’s Socks in the Frying Pan, Ethiopia’s Krar Collective and more blow audiences away. Many of MIMFest’s performers are Grammy-nominated, culturally celebrated, and of course,

impossible to duplicate. Their sounds are just too unique. Other acts include Davina and The Vagabonds, Heritage Blues Orchestra, Billy Strings & Don Julin, Muskellunge and The Okee Dokee Brothers.

If you’re more of the local type, stay for the sounds of Sergio Mendoza y la Orkesta. Hailing from Tucson, these local guys are celebrated for their classic cumbia and mambo sounds, making them unique and cool enough to appeal to mainstream sensibilities.

You can experience exotic (and notso-exotic) eats at the fest, too. MIMFest is also a food truck festival. Thirteen trucks from all around the Valley like Aoili Burger, Spice it Up, Short Leash Dogs, Comfort Cravings and more, will appeal to international and local sensibilities, dishing up everything from seasonal cuisine to decadent American favorites to exotic offerings.

You don’t just have to observe at MIMFest. You can interact, too, with hula, taiko drumming and East Indian dance lessons.

Savor this moment, Phoenix. If you truly appreciate it, maybe (hopefully) MIMFest will come around every year.

Copper Blues revives live music in Tempe Ana Anguiano • College Times Tempe is known for its lively atmosphere with plenty to see and do, but since the closing of venues such as The Sail Inn and Long Wong’s, the city has been experiencing a live music drought.

Enter Copper Blues. A bar unlike any other, Copper Blues aims to bring live music straight to your table with a stage behind the bar, and music in every part of the venue.

Copper Blues has another location in CityScape in Downtown Phoenix, but the Tempe spot is all its own. With giant windows, garage doors and two giant bars, it’s hard to look away from all the distracting and gorgeous art scattered everywhere.

Artists Bridget Haxho and Deserie O’Brien were flown out to Tempe from West Palm Beach, Florida for five weeks to complete the wall-to-wall art that lights up the bar. Most of the painted elements (even the rugs) were done by them. They took bare walls and turned them into vibrant art.

Located in the property next to Tempe Improv in Tempe’s Cornerstone Mall, Copper Blues is a rather large space that once housed offices before the company came in and completely remodeled it.

“When we saw that it became available, we knew instantly it had to be the next Copper Blues,” says manager Doug Lyons.

Lyons says customers can expect some of the same local bands from the downtown location to play in Tempe.

They are also on the lookout for more local music in Tempe to grace their stage.

Sure, they have a fancy cocktail program and the “elevated pub fare” is pretty tasty (Lyons recommends the chicken nachos to share), but top to bottom, Copper Blues is all about beer.

The entire bar is decorated with hops, and a beautiful, glittery angel hanging from the wall is actually the patron saint of hops. And with 51 taps loaded and ready to go, Copper Blues has rotating tap handles with three specifically set aside to be off-menu

brews. These are the first runs and special editions you can’t get anywhere else.

Uncle Bear’s Brewery even made a special dark brown ale just for the opening with a small keg that was tapped and quickly devoured.

“The true focus of our restaurant is the beer program. We have invested wildly in all the local craft beers,” Lyons says.

“As you are looking down our draft line, you see one after another. We have Sonoran, we have Four Peaks, we have SanTan, Cartel, Uncle Bear’s, Historic, Lumberyard, College Street, Sleepy Dog, Mother Road, and then it just keeps curling around. The more that we can support the local economy, the better.”

Being as local as possible is important to Copper Blues, where they also locally source their produce, meat and bread as well.

What your girlfriend really wants you to wear Megan Stalbaum • College Times We have a secret: Your girlfriend is just being nice. She hates your stupid hats, tattered jeans and too-tight shirts. You might think that trilby hat looks totally dope, but unless you’re Justin Timberlake, odds are you’re far from bringing the trilby (or sexy) back.

Some guys get up in the morning and throw on whatever they find lying on their floor, but that’s not what you want to do if you want to look attractive or even respectable.

Listen dudes, it’s not hard. Everyone has their own sense of style and your clothes should reflect that, but don’t try to explain these faux paus as being part of your “look.”

Once you know the basic fashion rules, you can break them. Until then, stick to these simple staple items that will help you look your best to your girlfriend and pretty much everyone else.

Get your hands on:

• Button-up shirts. Button-up shirts are as effortless as a T-shirt (Minus the buttoning part. Come on, you’re not that lazy.) and look way, way better. Wear a button-up shirt with a nice pair of jeans and you might just get the eye. Also, this would be a great outfit to wear on a date. It’s casual and comfortable yet respectful and exudes confidence.

• T-shirts. You can’t really go wrong with a basic T-shirt. Some guys can pull of the tight fit, but if you are not one of those guys (which you’ll know deep down in your heart of heart), try to find a comfy fit that’s close to the body but doesn’t cling. Solid colors work best. Try to avoid cheesy screen prints or sassy slogans you think are funny. “Joke” T-shirts aren’t conversation starters. Odds are the person reading won’t get the joke

because it’s not one. Your clothing choices should say something, but not in outright English. Let your style speak for you.

• Jeans that fit. The perfect jeans are a little snug but also have enough space to keep you comfortable. The right pair is worth investing in, so don’t skrimp. If you’re looking for a bargain buy, Levi’s jeans are a classic. If you’re willing to spend a bit more, take a look at J. Crew or Banana Republic.

• Sneakers. Any stylish sneaker will work as long as they don’t look like your dog chewed them up. Think Converse, Onitsuka Tigers or similar styles.

Burn in a fire:

• Rolled-up pants. This might work for fashionably skinny guys, but for the most part, this look can be left for the ladies or ‘50s greasers. For the record, you don’t fall into either of those categories.

• Skinny jeans. Again, this might work for skinny dudes, but there’s nothing flattering about guys pants being so tight they can hardly move—and it’s not comfortable either. If you have muscle definition, skip the skinny jeans and go for slim cuts for a similar but better-fitting look.

• Jeans with holes. Even rockstars aren’t working this look anymore. If people who are the pinnacle of cool dropped this look like a bad habit, you can too.

• Saggy pants. Your butt looks better in a nice pair of jeans than the parachute you’re packing behind your bum. Saggy pants say something about a person— mainly “I’ll need to drop these suckers and go to the bathroom at any second now.”

• Cut-off tanks. Save those for the gym.

Blunt Club still smokin’ on the PHX hip-hop scene 12 years later Cailyn Finkel • College Times A Mecca for Valley poets and hip-hop heads, Blunt Club has been a Phoenix cultural staple for over a decade. Despite moving locations from the Priceless Inn, to Club Red and now to Yucca Tap Room in Tempe, they have retained an extremely loyal crowd and their events are more popular than ever.

“We usually do about 200 people every week. It’s a pretty steady flow,” says Adam Dumper, one of the founders and head promoter for Blunt Club. “We’ve been at Yucca Tap Room for two and a half years now and the reason we moved from Club Red was the size factor. It was such a huge location and we wanted to go to somewhere that had no cover and somewhere that was more ‘divey.’”

In addition to Blunt Club Thursday at Yucca, they also have pop up events hosted in popular venues such as Crescent Ballroom for one-off special nights. Their acts have ranged from unknown Phoenix artists to well-known and beloved groups.

“We’ve had Public Enemy, the whole band, even Flavor Flav, play at Blunt Club.

We’ve had Afrika Bambaataa and Peanut Butter Wolf too,” Dumper says.

Blunt Club was created in 2002 after several of the founders realized the Valley desperately needed a spoken-word and hip-hop joint. They decided on the name of the club for a few reasons. Emerge McVay, one of the founders, believed that Phoenix needed a place for blunt-style poetry specifically.

“I’m sure he was probably smoking blunts back then,” jokes Dumper.

Many people within the community feel Blunt Club has given them outlet for expression and a safe haven from judgment. Aran Kelly, a teacher of poetry at Phonetic Spit, is a recognizable figure at Blunt Club. He has been a resident poet since its opening day, hosted events, and

has even taken his turn at the DJ booth.

“What I really learned about myself was the acceptance of who I am and what really helped me through that was the stage provided by Blunt Club and from the support of some cool-ass people, some open and honest folks. It takes that kind of atmosphere to really ease into accepting oneself. I try to provide the same support system to my kids [at Phonetic Spit] that the Blunt Club provided for me,” Kelly says.

It wasn’t always as popular as it is now. It has taken years of dedication and determination from everyone involved to help grow Blunt Club into what it is today.

The need to move to a larger venue from the Priceless Inn had to happen after the rapid increase in popularity.

“As larger and larger acts came through Blunt Club, so did the crowd.

Sometimes there were lines around the building. It was a matter of quality control,” Kelly says.

It’s easy for Kelly to see the value of Blunt Club to the local community, “The Blunt Club has given us culture.

When I use that word I’m thinking of elements. Music and dance and art­—hip-hop culture uses all of those elements. What Dumper did was basically change the whole landscape of the scene by way of bringing all the elements together,” Kelly says.

The Blunt Club isn’t just for hip-hop heads, however. They try to mix things up every so often by booking acts of all of genres.

“I try to throw a little bit of everything in there. We do live funk bands, drum bass, trap, scratch DJs and we even do some jazzy stuff. A little bit of everything, really,” Dumper explains.

With the different genres of acts come different crowds and the ever-changing atmosphere is something that the folks at Blunt Club thoroughly enjoy.

“We have our regular crowd that have been there forever and we have some new cats and ASU kids. We get a little hodgepodge of everything. Punk-rockers to hip-hoppers,” Dumper says.

There are also several nights with different themes. East Coast versus West Coast battles, Mo-Town Mondays and Uptown Wednesdays have become increasingly popular, but the classic Blunt Club Thursday is generally the night where the biggest crowd is expected to show up.

Dumper and his team have been, and continue to be, dedicated to the betterment of the club, doing most of the work for free or hardly making a profit.

“Most of the finances go back to paying all the artists that come in. No one’s getting rich in hip-hop, that’s for sure.”

Metronomy’s modern party pop finds its roots in retro places Ana Anguiano • College Times Joseph Mount is pretty much everything you want out of a British musician. He has a posh accent, sounds very sincere and has a nice sense of humor. The mastermind behind dizzyingly perfect electronic pop beats, Mount can effortlessly bend synthesizers and guitars to his will. His band, Metronomy, is all about snapping in and out of reality, so it was nice to know Mount is so down-to-earth.

College Times: How are you, Joe? How has your day been?

Mount: I’m very good, thank you. I was just walking along the street. I’m in Paris and I’m buying a crepe, so it’s a bit noisy. I’m just walking to meet some friends right now.

I’ve actually been in the studio doing some recording, which is nice because we’ve been touring nonstop for years, so to have a little break and do some recording has been very nice.

So when do you find time to write?

It’s a combination of times. The way that I do stuff, I’m not the kind of person that needs like an empty house or anything like that. I write a bit when we are traveling around. I have been doing a bit on the road, and then if we have a day off at home, I’ll try to do some stuff then, so I just fit it around life.

So do you have songs that remind you of certain places?

Yeah, absolutely. Not the last album so much, but definitely previous albums.

That’s something I can’t really escape, especially with the first album. I made it all in my bedroom, so that reminds me of my bedroom.

So then what was your first concert?

I remember taking a date to go see Radiohead, and that was quite a big [deal].

I was old enough to know I wanted to see them. Nothing happened, but there you go.

She was a freeloader. [Laughs] Are you excited for Halloween at all?

Your song “Monstrous” has a spot in my party playlist.

It’s not such a big thing in Europe. When I was younger, we used to really [celebrate], because I lived in a small community.

Everyone dressed up and went trick-ortreating. But here in Paris, it is definitely not the big event that it is elsewhere. I am looking forward to it. Last time we had a Halloween abroad it was actually the Day of the Dead in Mexico and that was crazy to spend that kind of a spooky day in the perfect place.

So if you had to put together a Halloween playlist, what would you throw on there?

I’d say “Ghost Town” by The Specials. That’s a good kind of spooky Halloween song.

That’s the only one I’d recommend. [Laughs] I don’t know any more, but that one is very good.

So if you are in charge of music at a party, how do you get everyone moving?

The Belle Brigade brings the intensity on and off stage Christina Fuoco-Karasinski • College Times On a two-day break from tour, the brother-sister duo of The Belle Brigade is revving up for its run with Ray LaMontagne, not only as an opener but as members of his band as well.

The grandchildren of Oscar-winning composer John Williams, Barbara and Ethan Gruska are touring in support of their album Just Because, their first on ATO Records.

The Gruskas spoke to College Times about LaMontagne, collecting sports cards and doing magic tricks.

College Times: You recently released your second album, Just Because, which is your first for ATO Records.

Were there any nerves about recording a sophomore effort?

Ethan: We were, like, very eager to start.

There was maybe nervous energy, probably because we were so excited to get back into the studio.

How long did it take you to record it and what was the songwriting process like?

Ethan: It was kind of scattered all along the year and a half, two years we were touring. We were writing when we would get home from those runs. The songs kind of came about in that time period. To record the record, it took 30 days, but they were scattered over a couple months because of scheduling and studio time. We had all the bare bones of the songs written before we went into the studio, but they got reworked in a way that felt like rewriting.

You come from a very musical family.

Were you inspired by your family, or

was it just an everyday kind of thing?

Barbara: I don’t remember ever feeling inspired when I was a kid. It was just kind of normal, like you said. To be an adult and on my own, I had some perspective of how truly awesome it is. Then I got inspired by it.

What were you inspired by growing up?

Barbara: Sports. I love basketball. I don’t really follow anybody anymore. When I was a kid, I would collect basketball cards and I loved the Lakers in the early ‘90s.

I used to collect baseball cards. I still have them.

Barbara: I wish I still had my basketball cards.

Ethan: You do. They’re in mom’s garage. I remember seeing them like a year ago.

Barbara: Really? That’s amazing. I’m so excited that we’re having this interview right now.

Ethan, I heard you were into magic.

How did you get into it?

Ethan: I got into it when I was a kid. There was a friend of mine who showed me this one thing called the “color change.” You have a card, flick it and it changes from red to black or from black to red. I thought, “Oh my God. I need to know how to do that.”

I didn’t really learn how to do that, but he showed me a really simple trick after that.

I got obsessed. A friend of the family gave me a few videos and books, from there I got obsessed for a couple years.

Nicolas Cage and cast talk spirituality behind ‘Left Behind’ Julia Thatcher • College Times Marketed as “a true story, [that] just hasn’t happened yet,” “Left Behind” is the second remake of the best selling book series based on the last chapter of The Bible, Revelations.

The film is stars familiar names like Nicolas Cage, Chad Michael Murray, Cassi Thomson, Jordan Sparks, and even Olympic athlete Lolo Jones, and brings a modernday view to biblical prophecies. College Times had a chance to talk to Thomson, Sparks, and yes, the “one true god” Internet phenom himself, Nicolas Cage, about the spiritual thriller.

College Times: What really attracted you to this script? What’s something just specific about it that made you want to be involved in “Left Behind?”

Cassi Thomson: Well, when I read the script it was just very much character driven, which is something you don’t really see that often in a movie that does have so much action involved. And it also is a very strong female character, which there unfortunately aren’t that many of nowadays. [Vic Armstrong], he’s just one of those directors that you want...on set because they do allow you to be free. And they allow you to experience your character. And let you really be the actor that, that you want to be but they’re also there with all the support, and

trust, and he was just amazing. Everybody was really amazing to work with.

Were you familiar with the books or you knew of them before you were part of this movie?

Jordin Sparks: I read this teen series growing up and I just remember being so affected by the thought of “Wow, what if my closest friends just disappeared one day. What if they just weren’t here. Or my closest family members or, you know, anything like that.” And it was just really interesting, and as a kid that’s definitely very scary. When you read The Bible and you take those things to be truth, you know it is definitely something that you can think of and go “Wow, that, that could actually happen.”

What do you hope people take away from this movie?

Nicolas Cage: I was very taken by the family dynamic that plays out in this script. And that’s what drew me to the project. Because this is a person who is in an extraordinary situation and realizes really what his values are, he reaches a catharsis through the experience of this extraordinary flight that he’s on. And gets back to the heart which is his relationship with his family, which is his relationship with Chloe, his daughter, which is so powerfully...she’s so powerful, Cassi Thomson, in the movie. And I think that that’s what I want, if there’s anything for me. I want that to come across that people

realize, yeah, we all make mistakes, but in a moment of crisis, what we really want, what we really... go back to is the love we have for our families.

A lot of the roles you play are very heartfelt. Is that something you love to do because it has the potential to affect people’s lives, or is it the script or something in the film that’s particularly meaningful to you personally?

Nicolas Cage: Well, I mean, if you look at my filmography, there’s no secret to the fact that I am drawn to movies that aren’t afraid to take on spiritual themes. And you know, without going into my own personal spirituality, which is very sacred to me and not something that I think is for public consumption or to be put in the media but, but I like to let my work speak for me. I like to find movies that allow me to explore these inner or outer worlds through the work without having to really talk too much about it.

Anything else you want to include about the movie?

Nicolas Cage: I want this movie to work for people of all faiths. It’s about when you have those moments [that] there really are no atheists in fox holes. And so when you’re in a crisis, in a crisis like that, I want people from all faiths be able to say, you know, we’re all invited to the table. I mean we’re all going to get something from this movie.

A tantalizing story of a man hiding from the truths of his past life, Sam (Billy Crudup) finds an escape through the music written by his dead son... and at the bottom of a bottle.

Half in the bag, Sam finds the courage to sing one of his son’s songs at a bar. The music captivates the watering hole’s audience as well as one listener, Quentin (Anton Yelchin), a self-seeking 20-something musician who insists that Sam needs to share them with others. The unlikely duo team up to find a belonging in music, and their lives.

The bleak foundation of the movie has somehow managed to create a cohesive bond with raw emotion and humor. By no means a comedy, the story allows for moments of laughter and happiness.

Unlike every other predictable Hollywood movie, plot twists and character developments keep the audience engaged and guessing. “Rudderless” takes an approach that is a unique change from other films. While there are a few dry scenes throughout, the music has a way of grabbing the attention of the audience and pulling them back into the story.

Some critiques that watched the film at Sundance claim the music was “unoriginal.” However, the indie rock ballads featured in the film are the same as the ones emulating from most iPods and stereos across the country. Call it unoriginal, but it’s a brilliant marketing tactic.

The closing scene, which prompted a standing ovation at Sundance, is equal to the gut-wrenching feeling after the last line of a novel has been read. As the pages close, the reader knows that the first-time feeling of falling in love with the characters and their stories are over.

“Rudderless,” though admittedly slow to start—like, really slow to start—will evoke those same classic emotions used in the best forms of storytelling.
