The hidden golf jewel of the West Valley Golf in Sun City West has made a resurgence the past few years.

Todd Patty and his staff have always put forth a well-conditioned product.

From tee boxes to fairways to greens, the “bang for the buck” has always been exceptional. Patty raised the bar the last five years by initiating a sand bunker project at each of the seven golf courses.

Army National Guard: Full-time benefits; part-time commitment Many prospective college students struggle with finding a way to pay for their higher education costs. The Arizona Army National Guard can assist future soldiers with offsetting these expenses through education benefits associated with military service.

These benefits include the Montgomery G.I. Bill, Federal Tuition Assistance, and the student loan repayment program.

There are also opportunities available to become an officer through the Simulations Membership Program in the Reserve Officer Training Corps.

This will allow students to serve in the Arizona National Guard while training to commission as a second lieutenant.

Many higher-education institutions also award college credits for the unique training opportunities soldiers experience in the Arizona National Guard. Once they complete their initial entry training, they can submit their Joint Service Transcripts to their school’s administration office for college credits toward their degree.

TRIO Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) at Arizona State University provides veterans with free academic services and classes.

VUB assists veterans with the transition to higher education by preparing veterans to enroll in and begin any college or training program.

“College wasn’t an option when I enlisted, and I spent most of my time in a turret behind an MK-19 while deployed to Afghanistan,” said Tyler Obermeit, an Army veteran and current ASU student.

“Coming home was actually the most difficult part of my military expe-

rience. I got so accustomed to combat that it seemed easier being deployed.

VUB is a program that too few veterans know about. When I first enrolled with VUB, my math scores were that of an eighth-grader’s. Within a few weeks in VUB, I got rid of a full year of remedial math that I would have had to take at ASU or a community college.”

Peoria Chamber to celebrate 100 years The Peoria Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 100th anniversary on June 7, 2019, with a historical program and evening of entertainment.

According to the original Articles of Incorporation from June 30, 1919, the purpose of the formation and incorporation of the Chamber was “to establish, maintain and operate an electric light power system, telephone system, fire protection, water system for domestic use, sewer system and other such improvements as may be for the benefit of the town of Peoria, Arizona, until such time the town shall become incorporated.”

These original chamber articles remained in effect until 1954, when the city of Peoria became incorporated.

With the help of the SRP historical department, the chamber is trying to locate descendants of the original chamber founders and landowners from Peoria to include them in the historical program at the June event.

The presentation will focus on the years from 1919 to 1954 and all the changes that took place during that span of time.

Working for Catholic Charities Westside Early Head Start program, Jonetta Ross makes weekly home visits to parents to teach them about caring for and educating their children ages birth to 3.

“Parents are their children’s first teacher,” Ross said. “A parent’s level of engagement has a lot to do with their children’s growth and development.”

When home-based educators first meet with parents, a full assessment of the child is completed.

With help from the educator, each family establishes personalized goals, for the enrolled child and the parents. They then work with Ross to accomplish the necessary steps to reach those goals.

For more than 20 years, Ross has worked with many different parents – some of them are moms in their teenage years. When one client became pregnant at age 18, Ross helped to support her through her pregnancy with education on child development and then as a new mom.

Because of the support, the young mom finished high school, undergraduate college and is working on a master’s degree. Her daughter is enrolled in a Head Start preschool classroom to prepare for kindergarten and the rest of her educational future.

Eva and Bryn Another parent Ross worked with is Eva Anderson. She had children participating in Early Head Start and Head Start (ages 3 to 5).

Ross visited with Anderson and her daughter, Bryn, once a week in their home. After weeks of visits, Bryn began to talk more and better express herself. She also improved in other areas like shape recognition and counting. Anderson also took Bryn to events that allow children receiving home-based services to engage with other children and develop their socialization skills.

Anderson’s son, Gage, also learned to be more articulate while attending his Head Start class.

“Being in a classroom has been huge,” Anderson said. “He is more focused, does a better job following the rules and helps with things like cleaning up.”

Serving those in need The services of Westside Head Start are offered at no cost for children in eligible low-income families. The focus of the program is to give kids a strong start and prepare them for success in school. Every class emphasizes independent skills like washing hands and brushing teeth. Meals are served family style, so that children learn to serve themselves and others.

Head Start and Early Head Start are free programs and there is often a waiting list. Registration for the Fall 2019 is underway and runs through May 2019. The Pendergast Elementary School District, through a partnership with First Things First, has developed the Pendergast Family Resource Center providing quality, comprehensive, diverse and streamlined services centered on a holistic view of early childhood education with neighborhood outreach as a core component.

Dynamic Duos: Parents and teens join forces

How often do the parents of a high school student get the chance to dine with their daughter or have supper with their son at school?

It’s happening at Deer Valley Academy, a charter high school, where parents and students share a fine, outdoor dining experience over a slice or two of pizza.

“A couple of times a year we bring our parents in to visit the school, meet the staff and board members, dine and engage in hands-on college- and career-related activities,” explained Carol Willette, counselor.

Earlier this year, parents accessed

the Arizona Career Information System (AZCIS) while working with their student “partner.” The dialogue between parent and student resulted in many discoveries about career interests, challenges and fears, and college plans. Often overheard were remarks like, “I had no idea you were interested in that,” or “I like the cost advantages of going to the community college.”

A subsequent activity had parents and students working with a financial aid adviser from Glendale Community College to walk through the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student

Aid) application. This was preceded by the “fine, outdoor dining experience over a slice or two of pizza.”

“It is such a wonderful opportunity to spend time with my granddaughter and share in what she is doing,” Bonnie Brant said. “There just isn’t enough time together with parents, children and school. I thoroughly enjoy these opportunities and seeing the pride she has in her accomplishments.”

Are you interested in biology research, biotechnology or medical school?

Glendale Community College (GCC) in partnership with Western New Mexico University (WNMU) offers concurrent associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in biotechnology and cell and molecular biology on the Glendale Community College campus.

The program is affordable, even offering some students the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science degree debt-free if they are Financial Aid Pell eligible.

This program is not on a traditional university campus, yet it challenges students with small classes and rigorous academics. All upper-division science classes are taught in person on the beautiful GCC campus by dedicated faculty who are experts in their field.

The staff will push students to learn more, emphasizing independent research. They will provide a full year of highly desired undergraduate lab re-

search and internships.

By the time students graduate, they will have earned three degrees (AA or AS, AAS in biotechnology and molecular biosciences and a BS in cell and molecular biology with a chemistry minor). On top of the academic degrees, students will know their way around the lab and will be ready for their next step toward graduate school, medical school or employment in one of the most fascinating and fastest-growing industries in the nation.

The Glendale Community College and Western New Mexico University Concurrent Enrollment Partnership Program is accessible, affordable, rigorous and approximately half the cost of similar programs at state universities. The program is competitive and limited to 24 students per year.
