hen Avondale Middle School was awarded the 21st Century Grant, a competitive grant that provides federal funding to establish community learning centers, Assistant Principal Susana Gonzales turned to Phoenix artist Sandra Marshall.

“I came across her Facebook page and saw the amazing work that children had accomplished with her program and under her instruction,” Gonzales said.

Since February, the Avondale Middle School Family Paint Night has attracted as many as 100 participants monthly via Zoom classes.

“We have only heard positive feedback regarding AMS Family Paint Night,” Gonzales said.

“Students are proud to bring their final products to school the day after the event for a group photo. Parents have expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate and go on about how much fun it is. Students have told their peers about the experience, and our number of participants continues to increase.”

Marshall — a professional artist, food artist, award-winning author, and mother of two — provides art instruction and presentations to schools via grants and presentations via Nepris, an online program that connects educators and learners with industry professionals virtually.

“My mission in life is to share the joy that creating art brings,” Marshall said. “Creativity should be explored, enjoyed and celebrated. I always start the sessions having everyone unmute their microphones to say,

‘I can’t mess up.’ You really can’t. This takes the pressure off, and then we all have fun.”

Marshall works in all types of art mediums in addition to her painting. Her food art recreation of the 2021 inaugural meme of Sen. Bernie Sanders went viral when it was retweeted by author Stephen King.

Marshall said her version of “Feel the Bern” made from a small potato, kale and eggplant had over 6 million hits on social media.

“Everyone was eating it up,” Marshall said with a laugh.

Marshall’s first book was published in 2016. “One Hot Night at the Veggie Bar” earned a Silver Award in the NIEA (National

Indie Excellence Awards) for its combination of clever stories and pictures of her food art geared toward adults.

The now internationally known known artist and author has released her second book, “The Razzle Berry Wackadoodle Garden,” to introduce children to plant-based eating through a charming story and layers of her food art featuring healthy fruits and vegetables turned into animals and scenery.

Career Success Schools names Duffy director

H

er students call her “Ms. Cov.” Her fans know her as “Idette.”

To her family and friends, she’s just “Lysa.”

She is singer, a recording artist, a writer, a sought-after lyricist, a lover of music, and the new director of Robert L. Duffy High School.

Alyssa Covington’s passion is youth development, and her vehicle is the arts.

When she heard about the leadership position at a school that was adding a new state-of-the-art recording facility for young and upcoming musicians and filmmakers, she jumped at the chance to move closer to her hometown and become a part of Career Success Schools.

Robert L. Duffy High School, affectionately called RLD, opened in 2010.

The domed building was constructed to include a computer lab and the latest technology, and offer graphic design, music production and video production classes.

The current superintendent of Career Success Schools, Dr. Edith Gar-

cia-Macklin, capitalized on the opportunity to revive the vision and initiated the restoration project to reintroduce the courses and upgrade the learning spaces. She found the perfect person in Covington to lead the site and support students in need who need to earn their diploma in a nontraditional setting.

Covington grew up in a musical family. Her father is known in Southern Arizona for his electric guitar playing.

Two brothers are internationally known drummers, and her entire family sings.

She looks forward to providing her students with opportunities.

“I am excited about the partnering of my two worlds — my love and passion for the arts and education — to advance and support young people that have been or may otherwise be rejected, discarded or discounted because of their past or current choices.

“With my partnership with Career Success Schools, I can focus on holistic support for students and provide opportunities for them to experience success.”

Hospice of the Valley offers chance to help military families

O

ne of the most fulfilling things we can do in life is serve others.

Ideally, the happiness we derive is all the thanks we need. But an amazing program called Legacy Corps is making it even more rewarding to help others.

Based at ASU, this national AmeriCorps program matches people in communities across the country with veterans and military families who need support. Hospice of the Valley is thrilled to be the first Arizona partner and receive a grant to fund the program for the next three years.

Of the 20,000 patients we serve annually, about 1,400 are veterans, who often find themselves physically and emotionally overwhelmed. Many need assistance with transportation, grocery shopping or light housekeeping. Now we can help lighten the stress.

“Hospice of the Valley is excited to implement this grant from Legacy Corps and touch more families in our

veteran community,” Volunteer Services Director Stacia Ortega said.

Volunteers who join the program are called Legacy Corps members and receive special training in caregiver support. Their participation is invaluable to military families who need socialization, companionship and in-home respite care to ensure their loved ones are not alone while a caregiver takes a much-needed break.

“The care and compassion these volunteers provide will make such a huge impact. What an opportunity to change a life while enhancing their own,” Stacia said.

In addition to training, Legacy Corps offers incentives like a monthly allowance and a college tuition award after a year of service. Those who are 55 or older can pass this award to a child or grandchild.

Legacy Corps’ national project director, Jack Steele, said the grant enables Hospice of the Valley to recruit and train 24 volunteers this year in the Phoenix area.

Among the current applicants are a

19-year-old woman who has volunteered with various nonprofits since age 15 and a 43-year-old speech therapist who wants to help veterans living with dementia.

Students understand it’s a night (school) thing

he common saying “one size fits all” is not true for clothing and living things.

Also falling into that category is Deer Valley Academy, which sees increasing enrollment. The nonprofit charter high school operates after-school and early evening hours.

The academy’s focus has been credit retrieval, allowing hundreds of students to make up credits for free and graduate on time with their home schools.

Second, it provides an option for students seeking a smaller campus by enrolling full time in DVA’s program to

earn their high school diploma.

Students are attracted to DVA because they can earn six credits each year but do it in a staggered way that reduces the stress of juggling multiple classes. Attending later in the day allows students to get a job or care for family during the day.

It even allows the night owls to avoid early mornings.

Liberty High School student Madeline Reeves was the successful candidate to be selected by BNC Bank out of a number of other very talented and deserving students.

The summer intern program was developed by Barbara Coakley, CTE director at the Peoria Unified School District, and Kirstin Hall, business attraction program manager, city of Peoria economic development department.

BNC Bank joined their efforts and was happy to provide support and develop a specific summer intern position at the bank. The program is a classic example of public leaders and private businesses working together to build our communities.

ighland Prep West, a worldclass STEM college-preparatory high school, is preparing to break ground in the Avondale/Goodyear area. Highland Prep West will provide students a unique and transformative experience.

What does it mean to be a Highland Prep Hornet? Highland Prep West specializes in STEM academics. Highland Prep West scholars will graduate with a minimum of three college engineering classes, skilled in robotics, coding and computer-aided design. This preparation will give Highland Prep West students a competitive edge in college acceptance and scholarships.

It is also a priority for all Highland Prep West students to participate in the Advanced Placement curriculum as the benefits of exposure to AP classes have been proven to change lives. Highland Prep West’s AP Program will ensure markedly better college readiness due to the rigor and depth of learning experiences.

Beyond world-class academics, students will also obtain hands-on learning experiences outside of the classroom. Students will become community change agents through participation in various clubs and volunteer experiences. Students will utilize their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills through internships with companies that play an integral role in the lo-

cal business community. Students will leave Highland Prep West with the academic and leadership skills necessary to change the global landscape. That is the portrait of a Highland Prep West graduate.

Highland Prep West will boast an exciting campus life. Students will have access to an array of clubs and athletics. Clubs include Vex robotics, engi-

neering club and drone racing.

Through participation in the AIA, athletics will include football, soccer and cheer. Students will also work together to plan a host of spirit-themed activities.

Midwestern University expands clinic services, degree programs

idwestern University’s Glendale campus, near Loop 101 and 59th Avenue, is home to Arizona’s largest medical school and the state’s first veterinary college.

The campus has seen steady growth since 1995, adding new colleges, graduate degree programs and community clinics. With more than 13,000 alumni health professionals and over 40% practicing in Arizona, the university helps address critical health care concerns statewide.

The Midwestern University Therapy Institute joins the Dental Institute, Multispecialty Clinic, Eye Institute, Companion Animal Clinic, and Equine and Bovine Center, bringing important services and advanced technology to the community. Offering physical and occupational therapy, brain injury treatment, vision therapy and low vision rehabilitation, sports vision performance training, clinical psychology and speech-language pathology — now also offering bilingual services —

the Therapy Institute provides a variety of integrated treatments for all ages.

Patients also have a unique new health care partner, with the first CAREN in Arizona. The CAREN — Computer-Assisted Rehabilitation Environment — is the most advanced biomechanics lab and immersive virtual system to address complex, neurophysical conditions affecting vision, balance and physical abilities, such as stroke and Parkinson’s disease.

“We’ve invested in this technology to provide patient-first care and the top resources for our community, and advanced professional training for our students,” said Dr. Kaila Osmotherly, FAAO, medical director.

In addition, new academic programs at the university address health care trends. The College of Health Sciences now offers a Master of Science in nursing and Post-Master’s Certificate in adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner, a Master of Science in nursing in nurse leadership in global health, and a Doctor of Nursing Prac-

tice program with adult-gerontology primary care nurse practitioner and nurse executive tracks.

These provide advanced training and credentials via online education for licensed and experienced bachelor-degreed registered nurses, with minimal on-campus requirements.
