Meza named new police chief comm. spotlight

John Meza, a former Mesa assistant police chief, has been tapped to head up the department. He has been with the City of Mesa for more than 28 years.

Meza was appointed interim police chief on Feb. 2, replacing Chief Frank Milstead, whom Gov. Doug Ducey selected as director of public safety.

Hired in 1986, Meza served as an assistant chief for seven years, most recently overseeing the Operations Bureau, and three years as commander over the Central Command.

He served as a lieutenant for six years and a sergeant for seven years.

“John has shown tremendous leadership ability, not only in his short time as interim police chief, but in numerous assignments with the organization,” said City Manager Chris Brady. classifieds

Three generations of women appreciate working together

By Alison Stanton Many moms and grandmas will gather with their families on Sunday, May 10, to celebrate Mother’s Day. As far as Dixie Lidia, Stefanie Tavares and Brittney Hay are concerned, every day is Mother’s Day. Lidia, her daughter, Tavares, and granddaughter, Hay, all work at Pioneer Title Agency in Mesa, marking three generations of employees.

They wouldn’t have it any other way.

Lidia, a senior escrow officer, was

the first of the trio to start working at Pioneer Title Agency. A short time later, Tavares came on board as branch manager and senior escrow officer.

“I told Stefanie, ‘Why don’t you manage and I’ll work with you and support you?’” Lidia said.

Tavares agreed to the idea.

“I told her, ‘OK then, with your backing I’ll do it.’ I knew I could conquer anything with her help,” Tavares said.

About three years ago, Hay joined

her mom and grandma at Pioneer Title Agency; she works as an assistant escrow officer.

“I had kind of bounced along at different jobs because I had a lot of interests, and then my mom called and said she knew I was doing my own thing and was happy, but she asked me to come on board,” Hay said.

“I’m so glad that I did. I’ve never been at a job this long, and I love the people I work for, and the three of us

love being together every day, and we work together really well.”

Their clients have peace of mind knowing that they’re working with three hard-working women, Hay said.

Knowing that her mom is planning on retiring next year is already creating some angst for Tavares.

“She’s always the strong one. Dixie is very humble and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and I will get teary eyed if I don’t see her every day,” Tavares said.

When the work day is over and it’s time to relax, the trio can often be found spending even more time together.

Goldfield is a true Western ghost town experience

Story and photos by Lynette Carrington I loved the Western experience as a child.

Now that we have three kids, I wanted to share the magic and majesty of how the West was won with my family.

Goldfield Ghost Town is much more than a tourist experience, it’s an actual Arizona town complete with a U.S. Post Office, seven full-time residents and a nondenominational chapel with church services every Sunday. Admission to Goldfield is free and the town is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.

My entire family was excited to discover Goldfield. Founded in 1893, the town in those days featured a rich gold mine before it flooded and went bust.

Goldfield literally became a ghost town in 1898.

Luckily for us, our family was able to see the only remaining original Goldfield structure that now houses the apothecary and Miner’s Grill and Ice Cream Parlor.

After a quick pit stop at the Miner’s Grill we jumped on board the Superstition Narrow Gauge Railroad. I would highly recommend the train ($5 to $8)

as your first attraction. It travels around Goldfield’s perimeter and gives a broad overview of everything the town has to offer, plus a unique look at the desert scenery and nearby Superstition Mountains. The 20-minute train trip is well worth the ticket price.

Next to the train station is the Superstition Zipline ($12). This attraction was installed just last year and gives riders a bird’s eye view of Goldfield, the Superstition Mountains and the farthest reaches of the East Valley. We ran out of time for this particular attraction, but it’s at the top of the list for our next visit along with a family photo at the Time After Time Antique Photography Studio.

Goldfield’s Main Street gave my kids an idea of how a real Western town may have looked back in the day. My youngest child quickly pointed out the gold panning at Prospector’s Place ($6 to $7) and my other two children chimed in that they wanted to strike it rich, too. Unlike some gold panning attractions, Prospector’s Place offered real slivers of gold and even some garnets in the slush mix. The “prospector” on duty even showed us all the

proper techniques for gold panning. It’s a true Western experience and I suspect we could have stayed to pan for gold all day, but it was time for a mine tour.

It’s that time of year again, that wonderful time of year, where we honor mothers and teachers and thank them for the wonderful things they do. I actually got this idea from my daughter’s teacher so I take that as a sign that these are good gifts for teachers. Anything to avoid the “No. 1 Teacher/ Mom” mug, right? hearsay

Step 1 If you’re like me, you have a lot of nail polish in a lot of colors and some just aren’t fun to wear anymore. Luckily, they make great enamel for this project and lend themselves to some very colorful designs.

Aside from the usual solid blocks of color, my girls and I experimented with different techniques to make the paint mix together.

We found that if the polish was applied thickly and then corresponding colors were dropped on top, the paint would start to mix together and make some really neat mosaic designs.

We also found that we could take this approach one step further and after the colors had been applied, take a toothpick and swirl the polish together for a marbled finish.

Another idea would be to apply small rhinestones to the wet polish for a more blingy approach to these keychains.

Step 2 It’s important to let the washers dry for at least 24 hours or else the paint could get smudged during assembly. Once the paint is dry, turn over the largest washer and use either puff paint or a permanent marker to write your holiday greetings to the gift recipient: “Happy Mother’s Day, Love Sara” for example.

Step 3 The final step is as simple as loading the keyring the same way you would put a key on a keychain. I started with the largest of the washers and used it to prop open the keyring so as to avoid scratching the polish. I layered other washers on top of the largest one and then curled them all on at the same time. The washers make a pretty belllike sound when they knock together, which I call an added bonus.

Vinegar is an all-in-one cleaner. It can take on most any cleaning challenge, no matter the size, and there’s no need to worry about harmful effects typically associated with harsh, chemical cleaning agents. • Use full-strength vinegar to banish grease and eliminate mildew.

• Dilute with water to remove grease and grime on miniblinds.

• Use full strength to clean chrome fixtures and whiten grout.

• Dilute with water to brighten brickwork.

• Dilute with ammonia and baking soda to freshen a musty closet.

• Mix with salt and baking soda to unclog drains.

• Dilute with water to deodorize the garbage disposal.

• Spray full strength to get rid of unwanted grass and weeds.

• Add 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 tablespoons white vinegar to a 1-quart vase of water to keep flowers fresh longer.

• Mix white distilled vinegar and linseed oil to clean leather. Rub the mixture into the leather and then polish with a soft cloth.

Boe ing Boe ing Palms Theatre announces lineup for 15th season The Palms Theatre will open a milestone 15th season of entertainment in the Valley with six Main Stage Musicals, four Marquee Comedies, Children’s Theatre and a lineup of concerts in 2015 and 2016.

“We listened to the requests of our guests and combed through the theater’s history to present one of the most dynamic, fun and exciting series the East Valley has ever seen,” said Robert Shaw, The Palm Theatre’s CEO and executive producer.

The fun begins this fall on The Palms’ Main Stage as guests get back in the habit with “Nunsense.” The holiday season will be ushered in with the premier of a new Yuletide production, “Happy Holidays! A Heartwarming Christmas Revue Featuring the Music of Irving Berlin.”

Following the New Year, The Palms will roll the dice on “Guys and Dolls,” followed by a visit to “Church Basement Ladies.” For the first time on The Palms Theatre stage, springtime will have guests bopping through the halls of Rydell High with “Grease.” Finally, The Palms rounds out its Main Stage productions with “Ring of Fire,” the revived Broadway musical celebrating the life and songs of Johnny Cash.

In addition to the six Main Stage musicals, The Palms will offer a number of productions as part of its Marquee Theatre Comedy Series. Shows Page 18

Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake Delicious, juicy pink grapefruit is in season from October through May, so this is a great month to try a sweet treat with a sensational citrus twist— the Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake.

First about the cake.

It really should have been called a 4-pound cake, because back in the 1700s, when someone baked up this invention, the original pound cake called for 1 pound each of butter, sugar, eggs and flour.

Since then, the pound cake has slimmed down in ingredients and in size, and fresh citrus is often added to the basic mixture. While lemon is the darling of citrus when it comes to desserts, there is a sweet alternative in abundance right now in your store’s produce department. Pink grapefruit is juicy, sweet, inexpensive and large, which is why this recipe for

Pink Grapefruit Pound Cake is so perfect.

While you’re enjoying the juicy fruit inside as a snack, the outside skin can be zested and blended into a moist, rich and dense cake. Then, you’ll take a few wedges, juice them up and add that to powdered sugar for a zesty citrus drizzle over top of the cake.

I made one big mistake on my first go-around. I got a bit of the white pith under the outer skin in my zesting and it made my cake slightly bitter, so make sure that you grate only the pink peel.

You can drizzle as much or as little of the icing as you like. Just double the icing ingredients for more sweetness on top. The second mistake I made was cutting into the cake before it cooled and set up. Patience has never been my virtue, but in this case waiting a bit promises the perfect slices.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a 9-by-5 inch loaf pan or a 9-inch spring form round pan. In a mixing bowl combine butter, cream cheese and sugar. Beat on high until light and fluff y. Add eggs, one at a time, blending after each addition. Add oil, grapefruit rind, vanilla and milk or cream, mixing well. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder and salt. Meanwhile make icing. In a medium bowl, combine grapefruit juice and powdered sugar, mixing well. If too thick, add more grapefruit juice, drops at a time. Transfer cooled cake to serving plate and drizzle with icing. Can be stored in refrigerator or at room temperature, wrapped well in plastic wrap, for several days.

Arizona is a no-fault state, so evidence of infidelity itself is usually not relevant. In many cases, however, people use Facebook accounts as their email system and their entire social communication structure. Parties may expose their secrets in less public forums of social media.

Even when parties block each other, social media is often intercepted by a third party or friend who then forwards it on, which can often remove the privilege protections that may otherwise exist. Especially in cases where one party claims finanbiz box

Insurance company’s owner wants clients to understand needs first financially speaking

Buying insurance isn’t a “one-sizefits-all” chore. Customers must be mindful of the qualifications of the insurance counselors and advisers who sell the policies.

“They need to know who they are doing business with,” said Kent Stewart, owner of Insurance Professionals of Arizona.

“Not all insurers are created equal.

They need to find the carrier who happens to fit in their mold.”

Stewart, who operates his office in his hometown of Mesa, said he believes his company is a cut above the other insurance companies because he is a certified insurance counselor.

He attended five classes and passed five exams to achieve the CIC designation, awarded by the National Alliance for Insurance Education & Research. on the town

The CIC designation represents the highest level of competency provided in the insurance industry. With that certification, Stewart is among only 5 percent of agents nationally who have attained that designation.

Besides his insurance certification, Stewart also has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from ASU and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix.
