The Gilbert High School Marching Band is preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to London, England, to participate in the 2015 London New Year’s Day Parade. More than 90 students are expected to make the trip.

Tiger Pride Marching Band Heading to London

Gilbert High School’s marching band is looking to raise thousands of dollars so the students can have the opportunity of a lifetime— participating in the 2015 London New Year’s Day Parade. The band is one of 20 nationwide invited to the event. “It’s quite prestigious, knowing how many bands there are,” said Karen Ferrin, Gilbert band booster president. Ferrin has been with the band for 15 years. All six of her children have been involved in the marching band, including her youngest daughter, a senior, who is on the color guard. The cost for the London trip is $3,090 per person and includes shipping the instruments. The boosters are trying to raise the money to offset expenses for 90 students, plus chaperones, to travel to London. Included in the fundraising efforts was a golf tournament held on Sept. 13, and upcoming event such as a pasta dinner/auction on Sept. 27, a garage sale on Oct. 4 and collecting aluminum cans, all of which will go to the general account to help all students. Individually, students are selling phone chargers, Jamba Juice discount cards, Entertainment books and tickets to Hale Centre Theatre productions to raise funds for personal fees. “We’re leaving Dec. 27 and we’ll be back Jan. 3,” Ferrin explained. “It’s a week. We leave on a Saturday and get back on a Saturday.” After the parade, the marching band will perform in front of a grandstand for dignitaries in attendance. “At the end of the parade they invite five different bands to come and do a

grand finale in front of those stands,” she said. “Our band was chosen to be one of those bands. On top of everything we get to do that to. It’s going to be so exciting.” Students will also have the opportunity to go sightseeing. “They’re going to do several different tours of London,” Ferrin said. “Buckingham Palace, Tower of London, they have a Harry Potter tour...they have a London Rock (tour), which is The Beatles and other famous musicians, so they have different tours set up.” Visits to Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and Greenwich to visit the Royal Observatory are also planned. “There are a lot of fun things to do while we’re over there. We are going to learn so much,” Ferrin added. “We’re going to learn how to use the Underground. That’s fun.” The Gilbert High School Marching Band has two public events scheduled—an invitational on Oct. 11 and the Color Run on Dec. 6—to help raise funds. Tax credit donations are also being accepted. There are 125 marching band students, grades ninth through 12th, eligible to go to London. “My goal is every kid that wants to, regardless of money, has that opportunity to go,” Ferrin said. The Gilbert Band Boosters is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and donations can be tax deductible. All of the proceeds from the event will benefit Save the Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Mesa that was established in the 1980s. Vega said the money raised will help the organization fund programs and open up marketing opportunities to help people become aware of the organization. “We help the homeless and working poor become self-sufficient,” she said. “They are in our program for about nine months.” Vega said they offer affordable housing, help individuals find jobs and offer classes about budgeting, parenting and building self-esteem. The foundation also offers Missy’s Mall—where clients shop with their case manager for career clothing, household goods and toys for their children—as well as Safe the Family Thrift Store. “We are always accepting donations,” she said. Last year, the foundation helped more than 500 families, which included single parents and their children.

By Meghan McCoy An East Mesa resident, who is passionate about writing and publishing, will host two workshops in Gilbert this October to help motivate students to finish written works. “They actually have small writing assignments in the class to get them thinking, to motivate them and stimulate their creativity,” Marilyn Janson said. “It gets them thinking. Throughout the whole week, they will be thinking about the characters and how to create heroines and heroes in their plots and what devices they can use to get the reader to continue reading on throughout their piece.” A Publishing and Author Marketing Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 25, through Nov. 15, at Southeast Regional Library, 775 N. Greenfield Rd., Gilbert. The class is $55 with a copy fee paid to the instructor of $10. The publishing workshop, Janson said, helps authors or freelance writers get their work published. She said the publishing world has changed greatly with a turn toward publishing on demand with such devices as eBooks and Kindles. During the class, students will write cover and query letters, as well as book proposals. Janson said they also study the market and how to create a website to entice prospective customers to buy books from the Internet. the workshop. Janson said the workshop also includes how to copyright materials, including digital copy. “Anything that is on the Internet can be plagiarized and used as one’s own,” she said. “So we have to be careful about that.” A Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing Workshop will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 25, through Nov. 15, at Southeast Regional Library, 775 N. Greenfield Rd., Gilbert. It is $55 with a copy fee paid to the instructor of $10. In it, students will practice writing from various points of view, mood, tone and dialogue, whether it’s a short or long story. Chapter and scene structure is also reviewed during the workshop. Janson, who earned a master’s degree in education, taught elementary school and special education before publishing a novel and children’s book. When she decided to write a novel, she had a hard time finding a class that would help her understand how to get published. About 15 years ago, she decided to create a class that would help writers get started. The classes, which initially began in high schools, have expanded to other venues, such as libraries in Gilbert, Mesa and Chandler.

Education Foundation Debuts Masquerade Gala By Meghan McCoy

A Masquerade Gala featuring cocktail attire and optional masks will turn the ballroom at DoubleTree Elegante into a night of dinner and dancing to raise money for Gilbert Public Schools. Gilbert Education Foundation Fall Gala Chairwoman Deb Carr said although the foundation has held smaller fundraisers in the past, such as dinners and recognition awards, this is the first time the organization has held an event of this scale. “This is a full-blown masquerade gala,” she said. “We have planned a very fun evening.” The Gilbert Education Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, is a fundraising arm for Gilbert Public Schools. The Masquerade Gala will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at DoubleTree Elegante, 1800 S. San Tan Village Pkwy., Gilbert. A social hour on the patio with a silent auction will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., followed by dinner in the grand ballroom from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. A program

highlighting the Gilbert Education Foundation and sponsor recognition will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and music, dancing and entertainment will conclude the gala from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets, which can be purchased at www.gefaz.org, are $75. Sponsorship opportunities are also available by emailing info@gefaz.org. The event’s main sponsor is San Tan Ford in Gilbert. Carr said that although the focus of the event is to raise funds, it also gives the community the chance to meet GPS’ new superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto. The funds raised will support classroom and teacher grants, as well as scholarships. The grants, Carr said, will be awarded in January, and the scholarships in the spring. The organization has been unable to award grants for the past four or five years. The proceeds from the gala will help fund the program, which supports curriculum, afterschool programs

and any additional needs the campus or teachers may have this school year. “It’s really important to those of us that are part of the foundation to put as much money back into the classroom,” Carr said. “That is the best way we have found we can do that because the turnaround is quick.” The number of grants issued depends on how many applications the foundation receive. “We hope to be able to fund every grant request that we receive,” she said. “Teachers and principals will be submitting those during the month of September.” The scholarship program The Gilbert Education Foundation gave awards to a is available for graduating few of the Gilbert Public School teachers during the seniors, as well as educators spring of 2014. interested in professional existence for more than 10 years. development and continuing “Last year we gave away 17 education. By Meghan McCoy A dental practice in Chandler and Gilbert is collecting new hats to donate to Valley facilities that treat children with cancer, so the youngsters have something to wear when they lose their hair during treatments. Pediatric Dental Specialists dental hygienist Tina Larcey said she was seeking a community-service opportunity when she stumbled upon a nonprofit organization called Hats Off for Cancer. “This is the first time that we have done this,” said Larcey, who is also a member of Pediatric Dental Specialists’ marketing community. “Hopefully ,we will make it an annual thing.” Because September was Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Monday, Oct. 6, is Mad Hatter Day, the practice decided to hold a drive from Monday, Sept. 8, to Monday, Oct. 6, for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Larcey said her practice sees cancerstricken children so it made sense to partner with the organization. “We love to do things that make kids feel good. It’s right up our alley,” she said. New, unworn children’s hats that are kid-friendly will be accepted. Hats such as baseball caps, beanies and sock hats can be dropped off at the Gilbert

location, 2550 E. Guadalupe Rd., Suite 101, or at the Chandler location, 2955 W. Elliot Rd., Suite 4. The offices are open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fridays at the Chandler location, and from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays in Gilbert. Larcey said each hat will be bagged with a tag, so donors can leave their name on their gift. The goal is to collect 50 hats at each location. She said her hope is to collect enough hats to donate to more facilities in the Valley. In addition to hosting the hat drive, Larcey said the office staff made props and hats. They also offer a photo booth for their patients. “It is symbolic of the drive we are doing,” she said of the wall of smiles. For more information about the drive, contact Pediatric Dental Specialists at (480) 839-0777. In 1996, the organization began after Tara Lawrence Bracher started collecting hat donations. It has collected nearly 2 million brand new hats for hospitals, camps and individuals worldwide. For more information, visit http:// hatsoffforcancer.org.

Is Your Child Ready for a Cellphone?

By Tracy House Cellphones, like driving and voting, have become a rite of passage, but at what age is it appropriate to give a child one? For parents thinking about getting their children their first phone, there’s more to consider than the argument, “Everyone else has one.” Tracey Fejt, a mother of four children ages 12 to 16, said parents have a lot to consider when it comes to cellphones and kids. She waited until her children were in junior high before getting them phones. “Being a parent, I did set some guidelines for my kids,” said Fejt, a registered nurse, injury prevention coordinator/outreach manager at Cardon Children’s Medical Center. Among the guidelines are limiting the number of people kids are allowed

to contact and the number of texts. “Parents should be aware if they want to give those younger elementary students a phone...it should be for an emergency.” Fejt also sets time limits on phone use. She finds it important to discuss with her children when phones are appropriate and when they’re not appropriate. Children will emulate adult behavior. Fejt said it’s vital for parents to show restraint with their cellphones, particularly while driving. “Parents should be aware that kids are watching those habits,” she said. “So we wonder why teens are texting and driving. Well, they’ve seen their parents do it all these years. So if it’s all right for their parents, it’s all right for them.”

cellphone. Fejt said to consider if the child is ready for the responsibilities that come with a cellphone. “Once your children do get older, parents need to remember you have to have a phone talk,” she said. “Sexting is huge with kids and parents don’t necessarily think about talking about it, but then those pictures get out and they get passed around. Clearly, having that talk with them, too, has to do with responsibility.” She mentioned stressing to children not to give out their numbers randomly or to get others without knowing the person first. “If they are having issues, make sure they can come back and talk to you

Parents also need to consider shutting off the phone at night. “How many kids go to bed with their phone on and they’re up all night?” she said. She suggested having a docking station in one place so that all the phones can be monitored. “I think the docking station and seeing all the phones is a good thing parents can do.” Every parent is going to have a different reason for deciding when their child needs a cellphone. Tracey Fejt “I think of it as a rite of passage for children,” Fejt said. “Every kid develops differently, so some kids are extremely mature and ready to handle it and other kids are not.” There is no tried-and-true appropriate age for giving a child a

How to Make a Frugal Pillowcase Pumpkin mom cents

Fall—with its cooler temperatures and delicious food—is my favorite season. I love pumpkin-flavored everything so, this year, I thought it would be fun to do easy DIY crafts that showcased this. This frugal pillowcase pumpkin is simple to make. It can last through October and November as you decorate for fall. The kids will love helping you create this one. photo page

Supplies You Will Need: 1 orange pillowcase. (Check secondhand stores or dollar stores) Several sheets of old newspaper. The more you have the better. Green ribbon or green scrap fabric. Raffia. This can be found at your local Dollar Store or craft store. Black felt (optional) Craft glue (optional) looking back

October 2014

How to Make It: Start bunching up and balling up the newspaper into large balls. You don’t want to make it too compact, but instead fluffy.

1

2

Begin filling the inside of the pillow with the newspaper. Don’t pack it in as, again, you want it to act as a stuffing inside the pillowcase. Fill it as close to the top as possible.

3

Once full, gently press the newspaper down into the pillowcase. Grasp the top of the pillowcase and twist.

5

Begin accenting the green ribbon or scrap fabric with the raffia. This will give it a fun, rustic look and also look like vines coming out of the stem.

6

Once you are done, you can choose keep it as a whole pumpkin or add a face to turn it into a jacko-lantern. To do this, simply cut basic shapes out of your black felt. You can do circles, triangles, squares, etc. Apply some craft glue to each piece and press onto the pillowcase creating a face. Allow plenty of drying time before displaying.

about those issues,” she said, referring to bullying and harassment. There are other health issues for parents contemplating a cellphone for a child. Fejt mentioned radiation, though it has not been proven to affect health, as another consideration in younger children with cells. In addition, holding up a cellphone with a shoulder, as well as continual texting can result in wrist, elbow, shoulder, thumb and finger pain.

Besides the safety and health issues, parents should be aware of plan charges and usage of the cellphones and monitor how they are being used. Sharing the cellphone plan can result in overages that teens and kids are not aware of. “It’s a privilege to have that phone,” Fejt said. “If they do something, that privilege does get taken away.” Cardon Children’s Medical Center is part of the Banner Health system. Casseroles are amazing. Their makeahead versatility is a great helper in the kitchen. But casseroles also provide the opportunity to let ingredients meld, often creating more robust flavors as they cook. Then, there’s the pan-seared method of cooking, where ingredients cook quickly on the outside, searing in those wonderful juices. One of my all-time favorite dishes combines pan searing and casseroles.

In this recipe, the pan-seared pork chop is finished in a casserole dish and smothered with sautéed mushrooms. Ah, the best of both worlds! To make this fall favorite even more delicious, I’ve given you a simple recipe for homemade apple chunks as a perfect accompaniment, too! Look for big, thick bone-in pork chops for maximum flavor and make a plan to dish up a plate of goodness for any weeknight or Sunday supper.

Pan-Seared Pork Chop Casserole 4 (1/2-inch-thick bone-in) pork chops 1 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 1 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup flour for dredging 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided 1 cup (1 medium to large) sweet yellow onion, chopped 3 cloves garlic, slivered or chopped 1 tablespoon parsley 1 1/2 pounds fresh white mushrooms, sliced 1/2 cup marsala or sherry wine or chicken broth

Step No. 1: Pre-heat oven to 425 degrees. Step No. 2: Season pork chops on both sides with salt and pepper. Dredge pork chops lightly in flour. Step No. 3: In a nonstick skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter. Place pork chops in skillet and cook over medium high heat until browned on both sides, about 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer pork chops to a plate and cover. Step No. 4: In the same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of butter. Sauté onions and garlic until soft and golden brown. Stir in mushrooms, parsley and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook for 10 minutes. Step No. 5: Grease with oil a casserole dish that is approximately 9 inches. Place half

of the mushroom mixture on the bottom of casserole. Place cooked pork chops over top of mushroom mixture. Top with remainder of mushrooms. Step No. 6: In same skillet, add wine and 1 tablespoon of butter, and gently scrape up all remaining browned bits in pan. Bring liquid to a gentle boil and then pour over top of mushrooms in casserole dish. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Serve with homemade apple chunks. Homemade Apple Chunks 4 to 5 firm apples, peeled, cored and sliced thick 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 dash of fresh grated nutmeg 2 tablespoons brandy, optional 1 pinch red pepper flakes, optional 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

In a medium saucepan on high heat, add all ingredients and cook for about 5 minutes until apples are soft but still chunky. Serve hot or warm. October 2014

Desert Car Care Specializes in Focused Customer Care comm. spotlight

When Fabrice and Mairead Buschtetz and their family moved to Arizona from France, it was important to them to stay in the industries that they loved. One of those industries was car repair and the Buschtetzs purchased Desert Car Care in June 2013. The business was already wellestablished and the Buschtetz family was proud to incorporate their special brand of customer care into the familyowned and -operated business. “There is always one of us here— either Fabrice, myself or one of our sons, Killian or Steven,” stated Mairead Buschtetz. “We have a very good reputation.” Desert Car Care provides a full range of repair services for domestic and import vehicles as well as classic cars, a passion of Fabrice Buschtetz. Desert Car Care is also open extended hours: 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. “About 80 percent of our customers are women, maybe because we’re not classifieds

A story is told of a poor farmer whose friends all said he should buy a horse to help on the farm. With a horse, his Nathaniel H. friends said, the Wadsworth farmer could grow more crops and relieve himself of some of the hard labor required on the farm. So the farmer saved up his money for many years to purchase a prize horse. After he purchased the horse, however, the farmer realized that he did not know how to use the horse to help with the farm work. He was too embarrassed to ask someone, and so he continued to do all of the farm work alone. The farmer failed to realize the full benefit of the powerful animal he had worked so hard to acquire. In a similar way, there are many people who realize that there are advantages to forming a separate legal entity, such as an LLC or a corporation, to run a business, but fail to realize the full benefit these entities can provide. One significant advantage to using a corporate form is that it can keep a person from being personally liable for a business obligation. For example, if an LLC is sued for a breach of contract, the business owners often cannot be sued so long as they properly used the LLC in running the business. Simply having a corporation, however, does not provide sufficient protection. The people owning the business must also

Nearby News • For News Around Our Neighborhood

properly disclose the existence of the corporate entity, usually by using the proper designation such as “LLC,” “Inc.” or “Corporation.” It must be clear to other people that a person is operating on behalf of a corporate entity. By way of illustration, suppose that John Doe forms the entity Acme LLC for operating his farm. If Mr. Doe signs a contract for the sale of crops on behalf of Acme but only uses the name “Acme” instead of “Acme LLC,” then Mr. Doe risks being personally liable for the farm crops and, in the event the farm breaches the contract, Mr. Doe can be sued. Many potential problems can be avoided by simply using the proper corporate designation on contracts and other documents. Of course, there are other things business owners should be careful about to protect themselves, such as not commingling business assets with personal assets and being honest in business transactions. If you are starting a new business or have questions about an existing business, we would be glad to meet with you to discuss ways to help yourself and your company. Nathaniel H. Wadsworth is a partner in Rowley Chapman & Barney. His practice consists of business law and general litigation. Wadsworth earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in 2003 and his law degree from J. Reuben Clark School of Law, Cum Laude in 2006. October 2014
