Osaka is much more than an entertaining teppan-table Japanese-dining establishment. Its sushi – nigiri, sashimi and rolls – in tuna, salmon, yellowtail, white tuna, white fish, striped bass, eel, crab, squid and shrimp are fresh and tasty.

The rolls are imaginative (the Osaka Roll has lobster tail, cucumber, cream cheese, barbecue eel, avocado, and spicy crab, served with honey eel sauce and massago caviar on top) and a delight to the palate.

Kindergarten teacher Jo Haasch has spent the last 14 years of her quarter century as a teacher at Liberty Arts Academy.

With a teaching degree from California State University of Northridge, the California native, who moved to Arizona with her husband and three kids in 2005, she became teacher “because teachers are directly influential in a student’s life and I felt I could make a difference.”

And she does, saying her great joy as a teacher is watching “how excited students get about learning in kindergarten.”

“I also love the people I work with,” she added.

For the last 21 of his 31 years in education, Eric Perez has been teaching at the East Valley Institute of Technology, the East Valley’s premier technical and trade school.

He had started his career as a designer for an ad agency but his desire to make a difference led him to his old college, where he initially worked as a computer assistant.

“I found that I loved sharing information with others and teaching them,” he recalled. “It became a passion.”

Not surprisingly, he said “the students are definitely my favorite part of working at EVIT.” “They keep me on my toes. I share my knowledge with them and they share their knowledge with me. I wake up happy and excited every day to come to work because of them.”

In his 27-year education career, there have been few positions that East Valley Institute of Technology Superintendent Dr. Chad Wilson has not held. He has taught in middle and high school, been an assistant principal and principal and is now in his fourth year heading up the region’s premier technical and trade school.

“To be honest, I never planned on becoming an educator,” he recalled. “I graduated with a degree in history and at that time, the state had an alternative teaching certification pathway. I come from a family of educators who encouraged me to pursue that opportunity. I did and it absolutely changed my life.”

How so?

“The ability to work with, and for, other people’s children, to see that through education, all things are possible, made me realize this is what I want to do with my life – that I was created to be an educator,” Wilson said.

“I have the privilege and honor of going every day to work in an organization that is truly committed to changing lives by loving our students and serving our communities,” he added. “Other organizations may say it, but EVIT does it.”

Barky is rooted partly in Liberty Arts Academy’s focus on excellence.

The mascot arrived at the school four years ago, according to School Leader Brady Wald and is based on the school’s mantra “Brave Attentive Responsible and Kind (or BARK) to Excellence” and is part of its effort to provide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

“BARKY helps to support this model throughout the school year at events and celebrations,” Wald said. As for who’s behind that fur, he said, “it depends on who is up to wearing the costume.

It is usually a student who participates.”
