ungry Mesa families make a beeline to Boca Taqueria for lunch and dinner, especially on Taco Tuesdays, for the cafe’s sublime grilled salmon and sautéed shrimp tacos. The shrimp version is topped with a refreshing pineapple salsa, while the salmon gets an orange-mango treatment; they’re both served in nicely sized 6-inch corn tortillas. Owner Jewelia Eagar said the veganfriendly black bean taco is just as popular. Carnivores in the family can get pork or chicken or splurge on steak. ewelia Eagar grew up watching and helping her parents delight Mesa diners with their traditional Old Mexico recipes for 25 years. When her turn came in 2015, she introduced some newfangled ideas, such as quick counter service, a food truck and a no-lard policy. She prayed that patrons would still come. They did. In droves. Eager, who operates the restaurant with husband Clay, said many customers order the vegan-friendly bean and cheese burritos in bulk, then freeze and warm them up throughout the workweek. Dads, fear not. You can feast on the signature Flying Saucer (a giant tostada, basically) and a number of beef-, pork- or chicken-stuffed dishes. “Everything is so good, I hate to single out one thing,” Jewelia said.

ete Grant got the idea for a drivethrough fish-and-chips joint while in the Navy in Australia. After settling down in Mesa after his service, he cobbled together a 6-by-8-foot shack and began frying fish and potatoes. He made $12 his first day, a pretty penny back then. Today, two of Pete’s daughters keep watch over eight Pete’s stores around the Valley. At Pete’s, you can order fish by the piece, served with Pete’s Special Sauce, or go for the two seafood combos, which include fish, shrimp, fries and a soda. he Barro family took a rambling route before it settled down in Mesa in 1980 and became an Arizona icon. he HUB is the happiest place in town from 2:12 p.m. to 6:12 p.m. Monday through Friday. The sports bars’ immensely popular happy hours feature beer sampler paddles starting at $5, which is a great way to try out the many craft brews. Patrons also enjoy $2 discounts on HUB shots, HUB drinks and certain appetizers. There are daily specials as well. Why 2:12? It refers to the HUB’s “212 in all we do” customer-service philosophy.” At 211 degrees, water is very hot, explains operations manager Katie Ellering. At 212, water boils and creates steam, which can move a locomotive. “That extra degree of service makes all the difference.”

he HUB is a great sports bar that also happens to have a destination-worthy restaurant. The seven-year-old East Mesa location is slightly more family-oriented, and kids are captivated by its big treasure chest full of toys.
