device, avoid charging on beds or couches, and unplug once fully charged. If a battery is swollen, leaking, or unusually hot, stop using it. Don't toss batteries in the trash. Recycle them at proper drop-offs. And if you have an e-bike or scooter, charge it in a clear area, away from exits, so a fire wouldn't block your escape. A little caution keeps our high-tech conveniences from turning into a high-risk hazard. And our last reminder may save you a little money. When you renew your home alarm system each year with the Fort Bend Sheriffs office, remember to tell them when you turn 65 so that you no longer have to pay an annual $10 fee. Have a safe October and lets visit again in November.

very October, Fire Prevention Week gives us a timely reminder: most home fires are preventable, and small habits make the difference. Start with smoke alarms. Make sure you have them on every level, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Test monthly, change batteries when needed, and replace units that are over ten years old. Next, practice a simple home escape plan. Aim for two ways out of every room, keep exits clear. Even 2 minutes of practice is valuable. Pay attention to everyday risks too. Stay in the kitchen while cooking, keep towels and paper away from burners, and set a timer if you're simmering or baking. This October, take a moment, test, plan, and talk about it. Your future self will be glad you did. Another growing issue that we have discussed before is lithium battery safety. We use these batteries every day, phones, laptops, e-bikes, power tools, but damage, cheap knock-offs, or careless charging can create serious fire risks. Always use the charger that comes with your

begin with the practical questions: Will it thrive in sun or shade? What color will it add? When will it bloom? How much care will it need? But plants and flowers can offer more than beauty and performance. Many also carry traditional meanings, bits of folklore, and symbolic messages that can make a garden feel more personal. As I looked around Sweetgrass Del Webb, I noticed familiar flowers and plants brightening our community landscapes. This article shares some of those garden favorites, along with the meanings and stories they may bring to our yards.

n August 3rd, the Canasta Club hosted a Back-to-School Fun Day event. Members were asked to bring school supplies. Our members’ generosity truly made the grade! Donations included crayons, scissors, tissues, hand sanitizer, pencil boxes, binders, markers, pencils, backpacks, glue, Ziploc bags, erasers, composition books, paper, as well as $300 in cash contributions. Event hosts packed
more than 30 boxes of supplies, loaded three SUVs, and delivered them to Pink Elementary School in Richmond. The club thanks Gail Chapline, Kay Steinkamp, Ellen Vitro, Ariana Beck, Linda Flegel, Nancy Graham and Carol Schone for recognizing the students’ needs and organizing the drive. Their hard work, combined with generous donations from club members, made the Backto-School drive a success.

CB: What else appeals to you living here on Grey Hawk? BG: Oh, definitely the neighbors. We know everyone on the cul-de-sac, and I think it may be the most social street in the whole of Del Webb.

CB: Bruce, what made you move to Del Webb? BG: Well, we lived in a big house off Memorial Drive with 2 kids, and when they left, Susan and I said this is ridiculous to live on a oneacre property, and we need to downsize. We looked around, and Del Webb popped up; we considered it way out in the country. The lake appealed to me, as we lived in Florida by the water, and so we saw this plot and bought it.
CB: Let’s go back to the beginning of your life. Where were you born? BG: Brooklyn, New York. CB: Really, I would never have guessed. BG: Yes, my great-grandparents came from Eastern Europe, as so many Jewish people did at that time, and settled in Crown Heights. My father was a manager in a warehouse in the

Bronx, and my mother stayed at home.
Where did you go to college? BG: I did well in high school, particularly in math and science, so I was advised to be an engineer, but I wanted to be a forest ranger as I loved the outdoors, but that didn’t happen. I applied to Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn for engineering as it was the only school that taught aeronautic engineering at that time, because I wanted to design airplanes. My uncles had all fought in World War II, and one of them flew in the B17 bombers, and he would tell us stories about those missions. So at that time, I also joined the Reserve Officer Training Corp ROTC, and then my first job was in the Army as I came out of the ROTC as a second lieutenant. The ROTC
CB: Were you a happy family? BG: Oh yes, my dad would take me fishing and then on weekends to Coney Island, eating hot dogs at the famous Nathans. We would take one of the subways and get sunburnt and then come home. We couldn’t afford a car then. My mother was a great reader. In those days, there was no TV, just the radio and books. Sadly, my dad passed away at 52 while I was in the Army. CB: That is very true of immigrants from that generation of Jewish families. Now you see it in Indian and Chinese families.

CB: What are you doing now? BG: I was attached to the 497 Engineering Company. Here I am, the youngest officer with all these veterans. What I learnt very quickly is that your First Sergeant is the boss. I also learned things that helped me later in life. I got involved in offshore projects like submarine pipelines and bridge building. We built a subsea petroleum pipeline offshore Connecticut to test bringing oil from tankers to the shore base. These systems are needed in a war zone. That led me
CB: Are we in 1962? So this is the Cuban Missile Crisis time, wow! That must have been a tense period? BG: Yes, definitely. I was involved in activating some of these sites. My project involved activating the launch control centers, which were underground. You are in these deep underground cocoons, and the launch operators sit on these floating platforms. It involved diving, and I was a scuba diver, so I asked to be on that project. I got out of missiles and world coming to an end and got into underwater projects. I became an underwater photographer, designer, and engineer in zero-gravity work. I got bored with that, and a company called Ocean Systems called up; they were using divers in the North Sea at the time looking for oil.

CB: Now what are we doing now? BG: Among many projects, we worked with the Offshore Energy Industry and the US Navy developing Deep Diving systems. CB: This is so interesting. Hardly anyone knows what goes into this work. BG: The ocean floors have large amounts of gas and oil and are a great source of energy.

board for two years and also the ARC. Then as the first president when we took over from Pulte. I was voted in for 2 terms. Since then, I pass my time taking photos, Shooting—good shot in the army. Even today, I go to the gun club and shoot. I play pool almost every day. I am a radio ham, but I can’t put up a tower over here.
CB: How did you manage to keep your family together with all this work? BG: That credit has to go to Susan. She was the one who brought up the kids and kept the family together. She is my rock; Susan kept me going. We have a big family now, and we have great-grandkids. They are all in Texas.
CB: Last question. If you had to ask 3 people to come to your house for a meeting, who would they be? BG: Definitely Leonardo da Vinci, the most amazing man in history. Ronald Reagan because of what he did re the Cold War and how he achieved his rise. Like his phrase: “Trust but verify”—And then Cleopatra, as she was a very unusual and very strong woman leader.
CB: When did you retire? BG: I retired a lot but kept being drawn back in several times. I consulted or worked as interim CEO with investment banks and even a toy company, and I was also on the board of the Monterey Aquarium Research Institute, among others. When I got here, I was one of the first to join the photography club and co-founded the Veterans club. CB: What else do you do here? BG: I was on the Pulte developer controlled
CB: That’s a great group. Thank you so much for a very unusual meeting.

rowing up in the South, you can bet there was always a casserole on the Thanksgiving table, and this Vegetable Casserole was one of my favorites growing up. It's a recipe filled with family memories, holiday traditions, and the comforting flavors that bring everyone back for seconds. Creamy, hearty, and topped with a delicious crunch, this classic side dish has been a Thanksgiving staple for as long as I can remember. After all, if you're from the South, you know we never pass up a good casserole!
