INTERVIEW WITH

Dan Noeth (DN) BY CYRUS BHARUCHA. (CB)

CB: WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO DEL WEBB?

DN: I came here mainly for my family. My daughter lives in Victoria, and my son flies for Southwest and lives in Houston, so it was convenient for us to find a place with some facilities and good, friendly people. We came from Peoria. We moved in May 2019.

CB: WHERE DID YOUR FAMILY ORIGINATE? DN: We came from Germany, Bavaria. My great-grandfather immigrated to this country at the turn of the century.

CB: WHERE WERE YOU BORN?

DN: I was born outside of St. Louis. Dad was a teacher. Prior to that, he and his brothers had the largest coal delivery company in Illinois, but they saw that business was not going to last long. Dad

went to college at 32 and became a teacher and principal for 30 years. Mom was a stay-at-home mom. I have a sister who is 80, my brother is 79, my other sister is 74, and I am 72.

CB: DID YOU GO TO COLLEGE?

DN: I went to college and played soccer on a scholarship at Western Illinois. I partied a lot, so my grades weren’t very good. I went home and finally got myself together and graduated from Southern Illinois.

CB: WHY SOCCER, OF ALL SPORTS IN AMERICA? DN: Grant City is a hotbed of soccer in the USA, and we had a pro soccer team in the 1960s. I was trained by the man who played for Germany and another who played for Mexico. We had great coaches and were state champions for many years. I recently went to the FIFA games, saw Germany and Portugal.

CB: NOW YOU'VE LEFT COLLEGE, AND WHERE ARE YOU?

DN: I got a job in a junior department store. I went to night school, managed the shoe department, and got married all in one year. My wife put up with a lot.

CB: DID YOU MISS THE DRAFT?

DN: My draft number was 276, so that made me miss

the draft. I wanted to join the Coast Guard. I was drawn to the sea. When I graduated, I asked the owner for more money, but he said no. I left and kept the shoe department. Long story short, the clean-up man got mad with the manager and torched the building, so I managed to get the insurance to pay up, and I sold the store.

When my relationship with my girlfriend ended, and I didn't have a date, my mom would say, "Why don't you ask that cute gal?" So, I asked Marie. After a few dates, I got cold feet and didn't call for a few weeks. Then, there was a reunion for a high school fraternity where you couldn't drink or smoke. Marie couldn't go, so I asked another girl. It was terrible, so I took her home. Then Marie called, and I told her how terrible it had been. We started going out again, and a year later, we got married.

CB: CAN WE GO BACK TO THE MARRIAGE? HOW DID YOU MEET?

DN: Marie and I first dated when I was 15 and not old enough to drive. Throughout high school, we remained friends and double-dated. She went to the same college. She graduated, and I didn’t! She was a serious student, and I was just having a good time playing soccer.

CB: NOW A MARRIED MAN, SO WHERE ARE YOU NOW? DN: I interviewed with Ford, and they offered me a trainee manager job in Eastern NM and Texas after 6 months. They offer me $35,000 a

year. The work hours were not acceptable as there was no family life. Marie and I talked it over, and then I went 6 months without a job. Then I got job offers with Levi, Redwing Shoe, and Fruit of the Loom. I took the offer from Fruit of the Loom, and it took us to Illinois. I had a huge territory, and it was the time when T-shirts were really coming into fashion. More than 50% of my business was selling blank white T-shirts. Became the salesman of the year.

CB: IS YOUR WIFE WORKING AT THIS POINT?

DN: Yes. She is working for Kaleidoscope, and they had an ear-piercing company. They were going to franchise, so we bought their first franchise. Marie partnered with one of the owners, and we bought out the rest of the family. We’re now partners. We went from one store in June to 10 stores in December of that year. I resigned from Fruit and had to run the company, which we then grew to 40 stores. As happens, we had a difference in philosophy between the other partner and us. He was 52 and we were 32. We bought him out and ran it up to 65 stores in 16 states. All owned by us. We even considered going public.

CB: HOW ARE YOU COVERING ALL THESE STORES WITH 2 KIDS? HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THESE PLACES? DN: This is before the Internet. There was a book

called the Mall Monitor and it told you everything about the malls that you needed to know. Also, when you have 10 stores, developers call you. Then you go to conventions and negotiate with the developer. You learn a lot about construction, leasing, buying, and selling in bulk. Finally, we decided to sell the company. A branch of Woolworths offered to buy us and then backed out. In the meantime, we sold everything and were in trouble. But they came back and made us the same offer, so we didn’t have to face bankruptcy, but we would just survive. I learned a lot about bankruptcy at that time.

license. The kids would be in daycare, so we flew a Cessna 172 and some club planes. We are qualified pilots, but kids were growing up, and I had another job at the St. Francis Medical Center. I had never worked a Monday-to-Friday job, but I wound up there for 30 years. I was offered a job in management as a cardiology and radiology administrator. I don't know a thing about medicine, but they convinced me to take the job. I became VP and had to spend a billion dollars. We were the first to use MRI equipment in the country. Also, the first “group purchasing” company in the country. It was a mold made for me.

CB: HOW DID YOU KEEP IN TOUCH WITH ALL THESE PLACES?

EXPERIENCE YOU COULD IMPROVE IT? WHY DID YOU JOIN IT?

and spa are going to cost us around $40,000. The pipes are rusty, and the dehumidification system is shut down. Just to trim the trees in Del Webb is $20,000.

DN: It was 2021 when Pulte left. I wasn’t on the transition team. There were 18 people who ran for the board. I had been on a lot of boards, so when I joined, I brought in the “group purchasing” concept, where we are saving money, be it on carpets, paint, and staples. We belong to Premier, so we get discounts from Hertz and many other places. People here need to check in and see that we have done a lot for our community. I was adamant that we could park in the driveway and have free coffee in the Lakehouse. Bruce did a magnificent job transferring us from Pulte, and he taught me a lot about managing a board.

CB: IS ALL OUR MONEY FROM HOMEOWNERS?

DN: We have 1535 homes; they all pay about $500 every quarter. Our problem is that some people haven’t paid for ages, and that affects our work because we pay people every month. While we must be compassionate, we also have a business to run. We have gym equipment that needs replacing every 5 years, maintenance of 2 pools, lifestyle events, and 14 employees. Then something like a hurricane hits, and suddenly you become an expert in roofing and insurance claims. The present company has done a good job, but they are behind in technology. One example was when a lady working here was not paid for about a month. When she spoke to management, she was told it would take 21 days to issue a check. I even offered to pay her and have her reimburse me later because that should not happen. Our new company has a policy of delivering checks in 3 days. They will also have a check printer. They

CB: WHY DID YOU CHANGE MANAGEMENT COMPANIES?

DN: We discussed this years ago. I travelled, at my cost, to meet with Del Webb communities in other states. I can tell you we are amongst the best. Regarding the management company, we looked at both landscaping and management services. The biggest job is managing money. Our budget is about $3m; that keeps me up at night. For example, the problems with the indoor pool

can press a button in Plano, and we have a check here in 2 hours. This is one of many reasons why we left.

CB: THAT BRINGS ME TO WHAT BOTHERS ME. WHY ARE BOARD MEMBERS SPENDING THEIR OWN MONEY ON TRAVEL, AND THAT INCLUDES PEOPLE IN CHARTERED CLUBS WHO CANNOT BE REIMBURSED? WHY? DN: We don't want to be accused of using funds for personal matters. I don't want people to think we were in Orlando and went to Disney. We left that morning and came back that night. Cyrus, you can’t believe the rumors that went on. The change will be a bit painful, but after 60 days, it will get better.

CB: I AM TOLD THERE IS AN ANIMAL PROBLEM HERE?

DN: Yes, we have a hog problem. We have a deal with the George Foundation, the LID, and us. We capture these animals…

CB: WHAT! WE HAVE HOGS HERE? ARE THEY DANGEROUS?

15 hogs with the Hog Company, so the cost is $3000. We pay a third of the bill. (Dan went on to tell me about many other things the HOA must do daily. If you reader, have the time to help, please offer your time and expertise to help our community)

CB: IF YOU HAD TO INVITE 3 PEOPLE FROM HISTORY TO YOUR HOME, WHO WOULD THEY BE?

DN: Dwight Eisenhower – I cannot fathom chatting with him about his life experiences, but primarily how he managed the Allied war effort, or how he got the congressional consensus to build the Interstate Highway System. Lee Iococa – I would love to hear about his experience developing the Mustang, but more so about his time saving Chrysler. Abraham Lincoln – I would love to know the real behind-the-scenes of the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, as well as his rise to power.

CB: WOW! A VERY SURPRISING CHOICE, BUT AN INTERESTING EVENING. THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO FOR US IN THE COMMUNITY.

DN: Yes, they can kill you. This morning, we killed

WHY IS IT CALLED "PING PONG"?

BY: TABLE TENNIS CLUB

able tennis started in the late 19th-century England as a way for upper-class Victorians to pass the time after dinner. When it was too rainy to play lawn tennis, they simply moved the party indoors. The initial equipment was brilliantly makeshift: The Net: A row of books stacked across the center of a table. The Ball: A rounded wine bottle cork or a knitted string ball. The Paddles: Cigar box lids. Eventually, improvements were made and of course Amazon has a large variety of paddles.

Let’s clear up a popular misconception first. Despite the sport's massive, legendary dominance in Asia, Ping and Pong are not two Chinese brothers who pioneered the game in the backstreets of Beijing.

NOW FOR THE MILLION-DOLLAR QUESTION: WHY THE DOUBLE NAME? The real origin story is entirely onomatopoeic. Onomatopoeic (pronounced ah-nuh-mahtuh-PEE-ik) describes a word that phonetically imitates, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes. It’s all about the sound:

Ping was the sharp clack of the celluloid ball hitting the hard wooden cigar-box paddles. Pong was the hollow echo of the ball bouncing off the dining table. People naturally started calling the game "pingpong" because of the racket-to-table rhythm. In 1901, the British manufacturer J. Jaques & Son Ltd trademarked the name Ping-Pong. They later sold the American rights to Parker Brothers, who

fiercely protected the brand name. Because Ping-Pong became a registered trademark, clubs and associations who wanted to form official leagues without getting sued had to find a generic alternative. They settled on Table Tennis. Wonder what Forest Gump called it? T Celebrating 250 Years of America

THE SWEETGRASS SINGERS HONORED AMERICA'S MILESTONE WITH PATRIOTIC MUSIC AND COMMUNITY SPIRIT.

he Sweetgrass Singers celebrated America’s 250th Birthday with two powerhouse shows on Friday, June 19 and Sunday, June 21, 2026. Twenty-nine Singers, under the leadership of President and Director Mike Byerly, sang 11 classics honoring America. In addition, Mike perfectly performed his rendition of “They Call the Wind Maria.” Guest performer Keith Kendrex presented “Narration of the Pledge of Allegiance” from Red Skelton in the 1960s. Keith also assisted as Audio Technician. The third individual performer was Bill Hale reciting Johnny Cash’s “Ragged Old Flag.” The audience participated in a Sing Along with Dean Jones at the piano. Other piano accompanists were Lynne Handwerk and Pam Audish. The joy of celebration filled the ballroom -flags were waving, folks stood and cheered, intermission refreshments were served amid

W Veterans Serving Veterans

A DAY OF SERVICE, BROTHERHOOD & GRATITUDE

hat an incredible and rewarding day it was as members of the Sweetgrass Veterans Club traveled together to Warriors Refuge in West Columbia to live out our motto: “Veterans Serving Veterans.” Our volunteers proudly prepared and served a delicious lunch of hamburgers and hot dogs while spending quality time visiting with the veteran residents. The smiles, conversations, laughter, handshakes, and shared stories reminded us all that the bonds of military service never fade. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply our time, friendship, and appreciation. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who volunteered, drove, cooked, served, donated, and represented our club with such compassion and generosity. Your willingness to give back

made a meaningful difference in the lives of these deserving veterans and demonstrated what our Veterans Club is all about. Special thanks to President Audrey Adams for organizing this wonderful outreach opportunity and inspiring our members to continue serving those who have served our nation. Days like this remind us that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off—it simply takes on a new mission. Together, we strengthened friendships, honored our fellow veterans, and made memories that will stay with us for years to come. Thank you to everyone who participated. We are proud to serve those who served. Veterans Serving Veterans… one act of kindness at a time

Please remember to stop by on Fridays to pick up a card to help celebrate whatever occasion you may have. We are always ready to help you select something original and endearing. Thank you all for your support, as we learn and create. Without you we would not be able to help the charities we support.
