Needles on the Beach, Electric Scooter Lawsuit & a Floating Trash Collector for Ballona Creek ‘The Interceptor’ Will Scoop Debris Out of Ballona Creek: A floating trash collector called The Interceptor will be deployed next fall to tackle the grotesque avalanche of plastic bottles and other trash that winter rainstorms push down Ballona Creek into Santa Monica Bay. Last week Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn announced a partnership with Dutch inventors The Ocean Cleanup to design and launch a site-specific version of The Interceptor — a catamaran equipped with a solar-powered conveyer belt to scoop up debris corralled by floating barriers — near the UCLA Aquatic Center.

The two-year pilot project for proof of concept will be the first of its kind in North America and free-of-charge to L.A. County taxpayers. L.A. County Public Works will head up operations, including trash collection and recycling.

The announcement comes after a push by Playa del Rey community organizer Lucy Han for L.A. County to consider a similar device, dubbed Mr. Trash Wheel, that’s currently employed in Baltimore’s inner harbor to keep debris out of Chesapeake Bay. “I’m so excited,” she said of The Interceptor. “I think it’ll be the solution to our trash problem.”

Hahn said The Interceptor will both protect Santa Monica Bay and “will be part of a global project to prevent the flow of plastic pollution into our world’s oceans.”

Mar Vista Residents Send an S.O.S. at Homelessness Forum

By Gary Walker At times demanding and at other times pleading, Mar Vista residents who attended a Nov. 6 town hall on homelessness pressed city officials to remedy a burgeoning local presence of encampments that many described as making them feel under siege.

Complaints about public urination, drug dealing and other public safety and quality of life impacts underscored the emotional tone of the night as more than 250 people engaged in a Q&A session with local government and social services agency representatives in the Daniel Webster Middle School Auditorium.

While many in the audience disparaged city and county agencies tasked with providing housing and services for the homeless and complained that Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin is neglecting Mar Vista, others called for new approaches to the crisis.

Dr. Robert Watkins, a spine surgeon who lives in Mar Vista, proposed building a massive public shelter offering drug rehabilitation, job training and other social services.

“Sleeping on the street needs to be illegal because of the threat to the health and safety of the unhoused and housed,” he said. “We have conservatorships for people who develop dementia and lose the ability to care for themselves.

Society needs to take control of the lives of people who have a mental illness or drug addiction that has contributed to them sleeping on the street, having demonstrated that they are unable to care for themselves and are a threat to their own health and the health of others.”

Los Angeles County Department of Social Public Services Assistant Director Phil Ansell noted that although the county reported finding housing for a record number of homeless people last year, more people than were housed became newly homeless, nullifying net progress.

“In 2018, every day 133 people exited homelessness, but 150 fell into homelessness,” he said. “We need to stop the flow of people becoming homeless.”

Ansell added that the county is weighing policies that would encourage homeowners to rent accessory dwelling units, often called granny flats, to the homeless — “an excellent opportunity to increase the value of your property, to increase your monthly income and to

about expanding similar efforts throughout the city.

The city has so far focused Proposition HHH funding on construction of permanent supportive housing, which Bonin said “is the solution for only about 25% of the homeless population.”

Not everyone was critical of the city’s efforts, however.

“How can I, as a privileged white male who lives on the Westside, help address the NIMBYism, racism and classism that led to this homeless crisis?” asked a man who did not identify himself, eliciting a mixture of catcalls and applause.

Alison Hurst, who runs the Venicebased nonprofit Safe Place for Youth, urged concerned residents to volunteer

at a homeless shelter or services organization.

Watkins described the town hall as “uninspiring” overall.

“The panel did not directly answer many of the questions,” including some related to law enforcement and public safety responses to encampments, he said. “Mr. Bonin stated that we only have two options: let them stay on the street or build them housing. I disagree.

There is another option.”

Deputy Mayor Christina Miller, who heads the Mayor’s Office of City Homeless Initiatives, acknowledged that the homeless and housing crises have worsened but said more housing — and more patience — is needed.

“It’s going to take a very long time to get out of this [housing] deficit,” she said.

While Santa Monica is as bustling as ever — just ask the 8.7 million visitors the city hosted in 2017 — our downtown parking structures are serving far fewer parking vehicles, leaving hundreds of spaces empty on any given day. The city could put those spaces to much better use.

We discovered this huge increase in downtown parking availability by analyzing parking structure data for Structures 1 through 9 and the Main Library as reported to data.smgov.net.

Since 2015, the number of parking spaces available on average at the busiest times of each week has increased from about 1,100 spaces to 1,800. That’s 700 more spaces on busy days just sitting around. That means about one-third of the parking spaces in the structures analyzed are empty at the times of peak demand!

But the changes don’t just show up in the averages. Look at how many spaces were still available at the peak moment on the five busiest days of each year: • 2015: 550, 567, 584, 611, 618 = an average of 586 • 2016: 459, 470, 511, 563, 577 = an average of 516 • 2017: 835, 899, 901, 1179, 1192 = an average of 1,001 • 2018: 1104, 1141, 1165, 1179, 1192 = an average of 1,156 • 2019: 731, 1063, 1185, 1272, 1461 = an average of 1,142 Routine traffic congestion on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway and local surface streets tells us cars haven’t disappeared, so why is downtown parking on the decline? We didn’t attempt to tease out direct causation, but some possibilities reflect broader transportation trends that make it easier to access downtown without parking: • Uber launched in Los Angeles in 2012, and Lyft in 2013 • The Expo Line began serving Downtown Santa Monica in May 2016 • Bird scooters launched in fall 2017, followed by a city pilot with four operators and 3,000 permitted scooters in September 2018 • Food delivery services like Grubhub (2014), UberEats (2015) and Doordash (2018) launched or scaled up in the L.A. market, and AmazonPrime launched same-day

People-Centered Infrastructure As international parking luminary Donald Shoup famously wrote, there’s a high cost of free parking —that offering abundant cheap parking encourages people to drive, leading to many social harms.

In Santa Monica we have 700 spaces of free parking, as in available parking spaces we no longer need. And the cost to us is the opportunity cost of squandering such a valuable resource. We have a glut of parking, and failing to repurpose those spaces for building a healthier and more sustainable city would be a terrible waste of free parking.

We need to rethink our streets — especially downtown — to better support people opting out of their cars, or opting out of parking by taking Uber or Lyft. By decreasing parking demand while investing in people-centered infrastructure, we can create a virtuous cycle of freeing up ever more space to improve quality of life, support safe and equitable mobility, and maintain Santa Monica as a vibrant hub of economic and social life.

A jam session with Joe Walsh and Glenn Schwartz inspired The Black Keys’ to record a heavy guitar album

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski When The Black Keys went on hiatus, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney worked on their own projects. Drummer Carney collaborated with his wife, Michelle Branch, while Auerbach saw other dreams come true. He produced music by a slew of artists but, to him, the most notable musical partner was fellow Ohioan Glenn Schwartz, the James Gang’s original guitar player in the mid-1960s.

“When I was 16 to 17, I saw him play religiously at a small club in Cleveland,” says Auerbach, a native of Akron, Ohio.

“He was this wild guitar player who built his own guitar. He was a big influence while we were making the first Black Keys record.”

The Black Keys’ guitarist/vocalist, Auerbach invited Schwartz to travel to Auerbach’s Nashville studio, Easy Eye Sound, to record. But he also asked someone to join them — the legendary Joe Walsh (who also spent formative years in Ohio).

“He was Joe Walsh’s guitar hero,” Auerbach says. “Me, Joe and Glenn were all playing these loud, electric guitar sounds. It was incredible.”

Walsh recalled seeing Schwartz perform in Bowling Green atop a fan’s shoulders, wearing no shirt and purple bell bottoms.

“The same way that Joe saw Glenn and got inspired to make music, I did exactly

the same,” Auerbach says.

Auerbach was not only starry-eyed; he was motivated to do something else.

“It made me want to make a Black Keys record,” he says. “As soon as I finished, I called Pat and we put the session on the books.”

Auerbach says. “We learned how to do it together. It’s always fun. Pat and I will always have this special thing no matter what.”

Released on June 28, The Black Keys’ ninth studio album was its first album since 2014’s “Turn Blue.” The duo eschewed keyboards and armed themselves with guitar, drums and vocals.

“Making music for Pat and I is always easy,” Auerbach says. “The chemistry we have is just undeniable. We hadn’t been in the studio together for five years. As soon as we sat down together, we were working on our very first idea, which was ‘Breaking Down.’”

Once again, the duo produced its own record.

LaMontagne, Jake Bugg, and the Pretenders. In addition to winning several Grammy Awards as a member of The Black Keys, Auerbach collected the 2013 Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.

Last year was the ideal time for The Black Keys to reunite. Auerbach says he’s a “completely different musician from four years ago.”

“All I’ve done in the last four years is work in the studio every day with some of the most incredible musicians who have ever lived,” Auerbach says.

“I feel like I went to graduate school or something. I spent time with John Prine writing songs. I worked with other amazing singers and bands — all writing

with these incredible people. I got to feed my brain for a good long time.”

For the tour, to bolster the heavy guitar sound of “Let’s Rock” The Black Keys recruited longtime friends Thee Shams, who were later members of Buffalo Killers.

“They [Thee Shams] played on our first CD release show,” he says. “Now they’re playing with us on stage. It’s like an Ohio reunion. It’s been really fun.

“We have two guitar players and a bass player. That’s a first for us. That’s a lot of guitars. For me, it feels more like The Black Keys than it ever has on stage. It sounds like our records. I always would layer up the guitars on every record. To hear those guitars layered up on stage is really satisfying.”

Auerbach cherishes the memories with Schwartz and their common Midwestern work ethic.

“This Ohio rock ‘n’ roll connection is hard to define,” Auerbach says. “It was cool to finally meet him. But being from the Midwest, I know every single Tom Petty song and I’ve never owned a Tom Petty record. Growing up in the Midwest is like that. It’s in the air.”

Humor for Sensitive Times “Seinfeld” writer Peter Mehlman takes on the culture war in “#MeAsWell”

By Danny Karel Peter Mehlman’s particular form of satire — playful, a touch neurotic — has earned him a successful career. He was a writer and executive producer on the iconic TV show “Seinfeld,” responsible for some of the show’s most memorable bits and phrases including “doubledipping,” “shrinkage” and “yada yada.”

He has contributed humor pieces to The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and Esquire. He’s a stand-up comedian. But, as Mehlman observes — and Arnie Pepper, the Pulitzer-prize winning sports journalist and protagonist of Mehlman’s latest novel “#MeAsWell,” discovers — these are not easy times to be funny.

Over the course of a whirlwind 48 hours, the fictional Pepper’s gilded career is threatened when an off-color joke questioning an NBA player’s masculinity slips onto social media. The wisecrack goes viral, and Pepper becomes the target of death threats, the wrath of the RMF (Radical Masculine Feminists), and faces the possibility of losing his job. This dramatic upheaval gives rise to more pressing issues: Is he not the good person he believed he was?

Will his daughter, a bright young correspondent for NPR, still respect him? Where are the lines drawn in this new culture war?

Mehlman, 64, celebrates the release of his novel next Thursday (Nov. 21) at Budman Studios in Venice. He spoke to The Argonaut about the origins of “#MeAsWell,” the pros and cons of a “sensitive” culture, and how social media has whipped societal change into a frenzy. “#MeAsWell” addresses gender politics, digital culture and social movements. How long have you been thinking about these topics, and what prompted you to write the book?

I wasn’t consciously thinking about these subjects — I mean, of course it’s almost impossible to not be thinking about them — but what caused me to write this book originally was reading an obituary of Philip Roth. The writer was talking about “Portnoy’s Complaint,” and I was wondering: What would I be as obsessive about as Portnoy was about his mother? And the funny thing is, the only thing I could come up with, that I had that many opinions on, was sports. So originally the book was going to be a little bit of a sports screed. But then, I don’t know, it just changed on its own. The idea about making one joke about an athlete and having it go viral just hooked into a whole bunch of different things that

Have we lost the ability to laugh at ourselves?

A few things about that. For one, everybody says, ‘OK, we’re all super sensitive now and these things go in cycles and it will swing back.’ I’m not that sure it will swing back. I don’t think we’re going to become less sensitive, and in certain ways that’s good. Even Arnie says that, in certain ways, there’s progress in political correctness because people are aware that they can so easily offend someone else. At the same time, it’s hard not to ascribe a lot of this to social media, because there are people sitting around just dying to be offended so they can lash out, because now everyone’s got a soapbox to lash back. …

I’ve written the absolute most feathery little humor pieces for different publications, and the letters you get back are so vicious it’s amazing. To this day it never ceases to amaze me, the angry responses I get to stuff that, to me, are like unbelievably puff pieces.

what they are going through, I’m always wondering what their day-to-day life is like. You know? Going to restaurants, just the looks you get. Can you go out to dinner with your daughter? All that stuff just fascinates me.

The plot of the book unfolds over only two days. Why such a tight timeframe?

I wanted it to be really concentrated, to go into the immediate effects of what happens when somebody is caught up in one of these storms. I found that there was a wealth of little moments that you could get into, and obviously the book is a little bit exaggerated, just for dramatic and humorous effect.

people in the world now, who are more anonymous, in a way, than they’ve ever been. And when they look out to the select famous people in the world who get to express themselves, they’re like, ‘Why not me?’ I think people’s values have gotten a little more skewed. I like to think that people weren’t always like this.

You know, the funny thing is, it used to be that if you lived in New York you had no clue what a person in Oklahoma thought. Now you not only know, they literally respond to the stuff that you’re putting online, and you find out their opinions not even secondhand but right in your face. It’s crazy.

It seems that younger people intuit the new rules of culture a little bit better than older generations. This shows up in the book, too. What gives younger people the edge?

I think younger people are always more on the ball about things. The Baby Boomers were much more on top of things in the ’60s, and our parents were completely out of the loop. Now the Baby Boomers are the aging generation, and everything is happening so fast it’s really hard to keep up. We just hear about it, bits and pieces, from our kids and our kids’ friends.

Through my stand-up comedy hobby I meet a lot of young comedians. They’re very sensitive about where [topically] they can go, but at the same time they can go to certain areas that seem like they should be offensive but they’re not, you know? If they’re not getting laughs, they go right to some kind of anal sex joke and it’s hysterical, and they’re laughing, and the audience is laughing like crazy. I don’t know. It seems a little cheap. I think [Arnie Pepper] mentions this in the book, about how no matter how sensitive everybody is, an eight o’clock sitcom can make a joke about prison rape and somehow that’s OK. There are these weird rules.

What makes certain jokes OK and others not?

Humor-wise, there are certain people that can get away with just about anything, and most people can’t. Sarah Silverman is such a brilliant comic because the way she delivers her lines she can pretty much say anything, or Howard Stern can pretty much get away with saying anything. If you are just a no-name comedian, or an anonymous person on the street, it’s very dangerous to say the exact same thing that Sarah Silverman said. So a lot of it depends on your delivery.

Last question: If I were to ask Arnie Pepper the Lakers’ chances of winning a title this year, what do you think he would he say?

He would say their chances of winning a title are about a quarter as good as the chances of the Clippers winning the title.

Thoughts on Paper Antonius-Tín Bui draws, cuts and slices artistic statements about history and identity

Bui’s hand-cut couture for the series “Donrose paper fashion” demonstrates the delicacy and versatility of paper as an artistic medium

Yet in a series of blue and red laser-cut pieces depicting traditional Asian iconography such as Chinese lanterns, dragons and dramatic facemasks, Bui confronts our current political moment with visually appealing or familiar decorative motifs you might see at an Asian restaurant or Chinese New Year celebration, but then upends their seemingly benign and decorative look with confrontational verbiage such as “F*ck Trump,” “Not Your Token,” “Not Your Model Minority,” “Abolish I.C.E.,” or “Not Your China Doll.”

“Many artists work with texts. That’s a trope that’s been around for a long time,” says Laband Gallery Director Karen Rapp. “But these somehow are so inviting, and so they draw you close, and then they kind of punch you.”

By Christina Campodonico It’s easy to get lost in the intricate hand-cut paper designs of artist AntoniusTín Bui. Precise geometric patterns coexist with swirly — literally paper thin — lines that either resemble the chaotic marks one might scrawl across a notebook in a rage or the wavy bands of stainless steel that adorn the Petersen Automotive Museum’s exterior on Wilshire Boulevard.

In Bui’s hands, an ordinary piece of paper can transform into an elaborate wall hanging that’s also a portrait of a close friend or an homage to a lineage of imaginary queer ancestors. A sheet of paper can rise to the level of runway fashion, evoking the elegance of a long wedding gown train or the grandeur of a superhero’s cape. You can see these pieces and more in “Finding Heart (tìm tim)” on view at Loyola Marymount University’s Laband Gallery through Dec. 14.

Inevitably, one wonders where the artist’s mind goes to achieve such an elaborate level of detail. Bui told international art-and-design platform Curator that “nearly all my pieces are a nonlinear dance between intuitive cutting, drawing/ sketching, and calculated slicing.” (Bui also outlines the backs of works with a complicated, yet spontaneous color-coded system of “layers.”) But lately the artist, who is the child of Vietnamese refugees and identifies as queer and gender non-binary, finds their mind even more “scattered.” “...In the past, I would always tell people it was just extremely meditative,” says Bui, who self-taught paper cutting by making paper angels and snowflakes as a child. “I would get lost. But I do find myself, like many artists nowadays, [having] doubt in my practice and my purpose a lot more than ever, especially with the climate crisis at hand, our political environment.”

Another paper work of Bui’s titled “1975 Should Be Enough” superimposes Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Nick Ut’s famous and harrowing image of a wailing girl fleeing a napalm attack during the Vietnam War upon the artist’s own self-portrait rendered in chaotic red and glittery lines.

It reflects not only a dark chapter of American history, but also a difficult moment in the artist’s life— a time near the beginning of Trump’s presidency when Bui was suffering from hair loss during a stressful artist’s residency, preparing for their very first trip to Vietnam “to make amends with the past” and contending with their parents’ own “glorification of America and their fears of going back to Vietnam.”

“I was starting to wake up with balding spots and to like have hair all over my

bed,” says Bui. “So [I was] thinking a lot about intergenerational trauma or induced trauma and seeing correlations between my own body and the bodies that I was studying.”

In many ways, Bui hopes their work can be a conversation starter.

“I am really, really grateful that my pieces can spark conversation or affirm people’s opinions or beliefs. …. But at the same time I’m also weary or fearful of whether or not sometimes we are preaching to the choir,” says Bui, musing further: “How do I take existing forms and imagine the conversations that I wish I had growing up at the family table?”

Discussion and performance is becoming a larger portion of Bui’s artistic practice. On Thursday (Nov. 14) from 6 to 8 p.m., a discussion panel in the Laband Gallery will be followed by an “artist’s mass and procession” featuring pop music, queer manifestos and poetry.

Then on Saturday (Nov. 15) from 2 to 4 p.m., four L.A.-based performance artists join Bui in activating the Laband with experimental performances, including sound art, tattooing and video projections.

In the end, Bui is hesitant to identify as an “activist,” but says this: “I never felt like I had the privilege to be neutral as an artist. … And so I would hope that every single artist — whether or not their work is directly speaking to political problems ... is making time and space to be politically engaged, to be reading, to be registered to vote if they can, to inspire other people to vote and to exercise democracy on a daily basis.”

Birdie G’s potato waffles get decadent with delicious dollops of caviar

Their latest venture, Birdie G’s, opened this summer in Bergamot Station.

The enormous, industrial-style space helmed by chef Jeremy Fox suits the area and showcases the kind of hip style more commonly found in Downtown L.A., or even Brooklyn. But the restaurant also manages to feel cozy, suitable for families with children as well as couples on date nights.

The menu at Birdie G’s

encompasses the usual modern California cuisine with a focus on fresh ingredients and a mix of international flavors including Thai, Persian and Japanese. The offerings really get interesting when they stray into traditionally Jewish territory, an uncommon source for fine dining in Southern California.

One of the standouts to try is the matzo ball soup, a huge step above the usual deli staple. This version features not only carrots but carrot miso, “lots of dill” and chef Fox’s wife Rachael’s chicken broth, a secret family recipe. The care and thought put into such a simple dish explains a lot about the philosophical bent toward tradition mixed with modernity that chef Fox brings to the table.

There are quite a few other items on the menu you might have expected to find in your Bubbe’s kitchen — if you had a Bubbe, that is. Feast on noodle

kugel, matzo brei, or kasha cakes (with schmaltz and gribenes). The sweet and sour beets come with whipped chèvre, horseradish, and a stone fruit-pecan “charoset” for a French twist on a classic.

If you’re in the mood for something different, the menu really does offer many choices.

The incredibly fresh boule from Milo & Olive can be gobbled down quickly, doused in Wonder Valley olive oil. Other Italianleaning options, including gnocchi and chicken scallopine, feature Fox’s flair of mixing in something a little unexpected, like tamari (a sauce made from fermented soy beans).

The range of eats at Birdie G’s may be one of the restaurant’s superpowers. You can go with friends and satisfy just about everyone’s desire, from steak and duck to salads and fish.

Not so fast. It’s easy to waste a few dollars here and for mistakes to creep into your closing documents there, all adding up to a bundle of lost profit. Spot moneylosing problems with these seven tips.

1. Take services out of your name.

Avoid a dispute with the buyers after closing over things like fees for the cable service you forgot to discontinue. Contact every utility and service provider to end or transfer service to your new address as of the closing date.

2. Spread the word on your change of address.

Provide the post office with your forwarding address two to four weeks before the closing.

Also notify credit card companies, publication subscription departments, friends and family, and your financial institutions of your new address.

3. Manage the movers.

Scrutinize your moving company’s estimate. If you’re making a long-distance move, which is often billed according to weight, note the weight of your property and watch so the movers don’t use excessive padding to boost the weight. Also check with your homeowners insurer about coverage for your move. Usually movers cover only what they pack.

If any party suggests leaving items off the docs, consult a lawyer about whether that might expose you to legal risk.

6. Search for missing credits.

Be sure the settlement company properly credited you for prepaid expenses, such as property taxes and homeowners association fees, if applicable. If you’ve prepaid taxes for the year, you’re entitled to a credit for the time you no longer own the home.

7. Don’t leave money in escrow.

End your home sale closing with nothing unresolved. Make sure the title company releases money already held in escrow for you, and avoid leaving sales proceeds in a new escrow to be contested later.

Lois White Becker Lois White Becker, long-time member of the Westchester community, passed quietly in her home on November 2. Lois was born and raised in Swampscott, MA and attended Bates College (Bachelor of Arts in Government) and Radcliffe College (MBA). After her family moved to Westchester in 1958, Lois soon began a real estate career in Westchester/Playa del Rey that spanned nearly 50 years. Many of the years were spent with Kent Realty, for which she managed the La Tijera office.

Lois served as honorary mayor of Westchester in 1992 and was a member of the Westchester-LAX Chamber of Commerce. She sponsored numerous soccer and Little League teams and was a board member of the local YMCA. She was vice president and board member of the Airport Marina Counseling Service and was a member of the Mental Health Guild, sponsoring the Annual Home Tour.

In recognition of her commitment to the community and ethical standards of business, Lois was honored as Westchester’s Person of the Year in 1991 and received the Westchester Rotary Club Paul Harris Award.

Lois is succeeded by two sons, Michael and Jonathan, their wives, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, as well as a large extended family. There will be a memorial service Saturday, November 16, at 1:00 PM at 40th Church of Christ, Scientist, Los Angeles, 7855 Alverstone Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90045. There will be a reception following the service in Masted Hall at Westchester Lutheran Church, 7831 S. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90045. A LABOR OF LEAVE I haven’t had sex since my last breakup, and I’m all lusty. I really like this guy, but he seems to have some intimacy issues. We went on a coffee date, and the chemistry made things go further than I would have wanted or expected (making out like crazy in the car). My friends keep reminding me to build trust and friendship before sex. But can you really go backward?

Like, is it possible to just hang out and chat once things have gotten hot and heavy?

— Lustbucket A nice thick pane of bulletproof glass between two people is an underappreciated chastity helper, which is to say: in a perfect world you’d plan your dates around one of you getting a job in a check-cashing place or getting arrested and held without bail.

There’s a tendency when you’ve initially gone a little too heavy into the heavy petting to be all: “Oh, well … cat’s out of the bag. Let’s just go straight to the sex dungeon.” However, for women especially, having sex right away can lead to a sort of psychological blinding to their sex partner’s shortcomings.

Women seem more prone to getting attached when they have sex. This is thought to result from surging oxytocin,

I texted, but he never responded. I know he’s bad news, but I still think about him constantly. It’s especially bad when I’m trying to go to sleep. How do I stop these intrusive thoughts?

You’re doing your best to avoid thinking about the guy. Unfortunately, there’s a problem with that. Research by psychologist Daniel Wegner on “the paradoxical effects of thought suppression” suggests our minds have something in common with a defiant 2-year-old, meaning that telling yourself not to think about something gets your mind doing exactly the opposite: thinking about that thing with a vengeance.

This is just how the mind works. When you tell yourself not to think about something, it’s an immediate fail. The mind sweeps around to monitor how well you’re doing at not thinking about it, which of course involves thinking about whatever you’re not supposed

a hormone associated with emotional bonding between mothers and children, as well as lovers. Oxytocin is released in both men and women through cuddling, kissing and especially through orgasm. However, in men, having sex also sets off a big blast of testosterone. Testosterone goes all nightclub bouncer on oxytocin, blocking it from getting to its receptor.

So just as a woman’s going all melt-o about a guy, if the guy has no pre-sex emotional attachment to her, his neurochemistry is prodding him to say something sweet and romantic, like “Thanks for the ride! Have a great life!”

In other words, the bulletproof glass suggestion isn’t all that outrageous. It’s a form of “precommitment,” a strategy by economist Thomas Schelling that involves preparing in advance to make it difficult for you to break a promise or duck a goal. Incorporating precommitment could mean only scheduling lunch dates in restaurants and only on days when you have a work meeting right afterward. Another idea is getting to know each other over the phone more than in person — with the caveat that you only do it in relatively public places, where turning FaceTime into PenisTime is likely to lead to, um, jail time.

Helpfully, Wegner and his colleagues found a possible way to stem the flood of intrusive thoughts: distraction. This requires thinking of something positive and unrelated to the thoughts you’re trying to suppress. Even a red Volkswagen — the example they used in their experiment — could do the job.

What’s more, psychologists Jens Forster and Nira Liberman found that you can keep your mind from constantly bouncing back to a thought if you shift your focus: admit that not thinking about it is hard. As I explain in “Un(f-word)ology,” “Removing the need to patrol your thoughts … removes the mental sticky note that tells you to keep going back into Thoughtland with a flashlight to see how well you’re doing at it.”

Finally, because the mind cannot multitask, meaning think two thoughts at once, it might be helpful at bedtime to tire yourself out reading aloud or following a guided meditation on your phone: You’re walking down a beach … you’re looking out into the waves … and … um … oops! Just remind yourself that not thinking about something is hard and yank your mind back to Swami Doodah after you inevitably picture yourself holding the guy down and drowning him in the ocean.
