Community statement opposing Council File 14-1057-S9 Editor: We are an organization representing Mar Vista stakeholders living in zip codes 90034, 90064 and 90066. Our membership urges the Council to vote NO on the inhumane motion within Council File 14-1057-S9.

The sole purpose of this motion is to criminalize vehicle dwelling. Supporters will argue that compliance with the “free permit” structure of the proposed ordinance is easy and straightforward. This is not the case. First, Angelenos will be forced to move away from their neighborhood to an unspecified non-residential area, cutting them off from basic amenities, schools, jobs, public spaces and support networks like family, social services and doctors.

Second, obtaining a “free” permit is contingent on receiving outreach services.

With caseworkers in LA handling upwards of 50 to 100 cases each and the majority of unhoused people going without any outreach, this hurdle makes it impossible for most vehicle dwellers to obtain a permit. Moreover, the permits would expire at some unspecified interval, forcing people into the same frustrating cycle. And of course, the people who find themselves in violation of the ordinance are likely those who are least able to face the increasing fines and criminal penalties.

In short, they are barely hanging on, and this ordinance pushes them into deeper crisis. Vote NO on this inhumane and unworkable motion.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced that a “Finding of No Significant Impact” (FONSI) and Record of Decision (ROD) has been approved based upon results of a Final Environmental Assessment (EA) completed in December 2021. A Final General Conformity Determination for the proposed project was also completed and is also in the Final EA as Appendix I. The proposed project is the Airfield and Terminal Modernization Project at Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. As this unprecedented semester has come to a close in our Los Angeles Unified schools, I want to wish all of the families and school communities a joyful holiday season and happy, healthy new year from your LAUSD Board Member.

Thank you for your continued partnership and support of your local public schools.

This year’s return to school would not have been possible without the community-wide efforts we’ve seen.

Last week, the Board voted unanimously to finalize the selection of Alberto Carvalho as LAUSD’s next superintendent.

With a long-tenured track record of success in Miami, deep knowledge of teaching and learning, and a unique ability to act as both an agent of change and a unifying force, he is the right person to lead LAUSD students out of this pandemic into a better future.

Superintendent Carvalho comes to LA with more than an illustrious resume — his personal journey as an immigrant and English learner who overcame homelessness has undoubtedly ingrained in him the transformative power of a great education.

We have no doubt that he will continue to lead with empathy and work alongside parents, students, teachers, and the broader community to realize a vision of opportunity and success for all our kids.

While we await our new superintendent’s arrival early in the new year, our work continues to navigate the path to recovery in our school communities. We are both hiring additional school staff and working with partners to get more caring adults on campuses so we can help our kids heal and learn after the crisis they’ve endured.

To help ensure that our students, families and school communities have the best possible learning environments, we are continuing to plan and approve new

campus upgrades and projects across the District. These plans include the nearly completed major modernization project at Venice High, and multi-million dollar campus upgrades at Marina del Rey Middle School, Grand View Elementary, Westminster Elementary, and more.

This semester, and the year that preceded it, demonstrated firsthand how valuable in-person learning truly is for our families.

As I spent time visiting classrooms over the past few months, I’ve been reminded of the innovative lessons, engaging activities, and individual connections that help our kids learn and grow.

Our efforts also include safety measures to make sure that schools remain open for in-person learning. As we continue to offer and encourage vaccines for all those eligible, nearly 90% of our eligible students ages 12 and up have received their shot. At the same time, we also want to ensure that as many students as possible can continue to learn and grow in a safe in-person learning environment, particularly students hardest hit by this pandemic.

This includes delaying the transfer of students not in compliance with the vaccine requirement to the online program until Fall 2022.

To help reassure families and keep school communities as safe as possible in the new year, the District will also conduct baseline testing when students and staff return from winter break in January. Assuming health conditions remain steady, we will begin easing certain safety restrictions in accordance with County public health guidelines in February. I will continue to push for LAUSD to follow public health guidance as conditions evolve and we get closer to a sense of normalcy for our students.

And, as always, I will continue pushing for students and families to be at the center of our decisions to meet their needs and get through the pandemic, together.

Serving Companion Animals and Their Guardians The Giving Spirit assembles 1,200 kits for homeless individuals with pets

By Kamala Kirk n estimated 10% of homeless people in the United States have pets who offer them companionship, protection and support. Assisted by volunteers, local nonprofit The Giving Spirit recently assembled 1,200 “Companion Animal Kits” at the Westchester Municipal Building to serve homeless individuals and their pets across Los Angeles.

The Companion Animal Kits were packed in sports bags and included a fleece blanket, collapsible bowls, dog shampoo, adjustable collar, flea comb, leash, chew toys and snacks.

They are a complement to the universal and women’s and young girls’ survival kits that The Giving Spirit distributes on a regular basis.

“Companion animals provide unconditional love, friendship, a sense of structure and responsibility for their homeless caretakers, increasing both of their

The Giving Spirit’s agency partners identified kit recipients

in advance and picked up the kits from the Westchester site, delivering them into the hands of those in need. The Companion Animal Kits were distributed to help sustain and enhance two lives with one loving gift.

“Kits access lives,” Bagamane said. “It’s about lives served, both in the streets and in our

communities. Our kit outreach unveils the true realities of poverty that they are truly us.”

Since 1999, The Giving Spirit has served homeless individuals in LA. Since its inception, the nonprofit has helped over 87,000 homeless lives with the help of over 21,000 volunteers.

In addition to assembling the

kits, The Giving Spirit also hosted a “Two Lives, One Heart” educational session via Zoom last month. The session was designed to inform the public on the relevant issues surrounding poverty and its impact on the most vulnerable. The session included representatives from Pals N Pets and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), as well as the courageous heroes featured in the corresponding short film documenting unsheltered animals and their companions.

“Our aim is to provide critical suppliers and to spur dialogue on the issue of homelessness for humans and animals alike,” Bagamane said. “Kits and outreach open the door to learning and education, creating a closed-loop solution and long-term impact.”

Facing Closure

City of Santa Monica to remove TRIFIT’s outdoor fitness facility

In May 2020, after months of deserted freeways, empty sidewalks and barren stores, it was suggested that outdoor businesses were safe to reopen.

As early as June 2020, it was believed that the virus could be spread inside among people in close proximity to each other, breathing heavily perhaps, often sweating on surfaces - essentially the blueprint for any gym.

But as luck would have it, TRIFIT manages two tennis courts in its business complex, about 150 yards from the gym’s doors, and the gym handles all public use of the courts per an agreement the City signed with building developers 40-plus years ago when the Colorado Center was built at 2425, according to gym owner, Bernard Baski.

Nothing if not resourceful, Baski hatched a plan.

“We decided to designate one court for tennis pros, and one court for the public,” Baski said, adding that only one court is being used for TRIFIT, and that the other is used for pros and public sign-ups.

Fitness training and classes started on the tennis courts in July 2020 and for the first four months, the classes were free and open to the public on a donation basis.

“We had an outpouring of communication from our members,” Baski said. “They were desperate to work out in an organized, safe and structured way, so the City and the property owner agreed to let TRIFIT use the West court for an outdoor gym beginning November 2020, while the East court would be jointly open for the public and for private coaching by reservation.”

By Pat Mellon he City of Santa Monica is locked in a battle with TRIFIT LA over the use of one of the City’s tennis courts for an outdoor annex of the gym.

For over 17 years, the indoor 29,000-square-foot facility has enjoyed its cozy location on Colorado Avenue between 24th and 26th, nestled among tech giants and heavy-hitters like Hulu and Oracle, offering members everything from spin to swims to saunas to squash.

When COVID-19 came to town and such indoor businesses became a health concern, however, gyms were among the lengthy list of places that were forced to close until the thenunclear risks of being near others was determined. Several halfcapacity and social distancing experiments later, the world is only slightly less scary in late 2021, with a number of people opting to refrain from the risk of indoor activities altogether.

And while restaurants negotiated with city leaders to add sidewalk dining for their customers in order to reverse what was quickly becoming a devastating loss of revenue, the owners at TRIFIT had the idea to move part of the gym outside so members could still exercise without the worry of indoor health risks or violating the rigid rules that the pandemic brought with it.

It wasn’t that long ago that everything from grocery stores and pharmacies to donut shops were shuttered while the scientists and policy-shapers decided how commerce could function without endangering the public in the wake of the virus’ erratic and speedy trek across the globe.

The City of Santa Monica is forcing the removal and inevitable closure in December of one of its largest outdoor resources for health and wellness during the pandemic, TRIFIT’s outdoor fitness facility.

Apparently, it was that very dynamic that started the conflict.

“A complaint came to a City Council member from a tennis pro claiming that TRIFIT is privatizing the courts,” according to Baski. “The irony is that currently, the East court is being dominated by that same tennis pro [who] is charging $120/hour per lesson. This is privatizing the courts to few members of the community [who] can afford the luxury of private lessons.”

Conversely, TRIFIT has 1,200 members who are benefitting from the outdoor gym, according to Baski, who added that he’d be happy to work with the City to reach some sort of an accord.

“We have proposed offering the outdoor gym on the courts to City first responders for free, and we have suggested keeping the other court open to the community solely for open play, no private coaching,” Baski said. “A joint resolution is what we want.”

Initially, TRIFIT was told to vacate the tennis court by the end of September, and that was amended to the end of December 2021. Baski said he appreciated the extra time, but “[the] decision was made before the spike in Delta, and much to our disappointment, it was not changed,” he added, hinting that he thought the clock to vacate should have been restarted. “The health and

safety of our members and staff has always remained paramount, and our top priority. Many of our members are still wary of working out indoors with a mask on, many more are older, or have pre-existing conditions, cancer, are immunocompromised and simply do not feel safe indoors.”

For the most part, the City has been somewhat accommodating.

Constance Farrell, public information officer for The City of Santa Monica, said that the City has been cooperative since negotiations for the outdoor space began.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Santa Monica has found flexible and low-cost ways for businesses to operate outdoors,” Farrell said.

“We appreciate that gym members have valued TRIFIT’s outdoor space. We extended the amount of time for the court to remain offline for public tennis use until the end of 2021 in order to provide time for [Colorado Center landlord] Boston properties and the gym to identify a new interim outdoor area for its classes. This is primarily a landlord/tenant matter. The temporary use will expire at the end of the year to return the storage to its intended access by all.”

Baski doesn’t disagree that there are a lot of moving parts in

terms of who can do what and whose permission is needed. But he is hoping for a meeting of the minds.

“The city and our landlord have always been supportive of TRIFIT and small business, and Santa Monica champions small business like few cities do,” Baskin said. “The community is communicating how important this issue is to them and we want the City to understand that.”

For now, the days are ticking away with the looming deadline, ironically on the eve of the day when most people vow to exercise more often, slightly less than a month out. While the City weighs the complaint against the benefits of TRIFIT ‘s healthy outdoor alternative, it must also take into consideration how the removal of the outdoor gym setting will sit with the gym’s members, many of whom live in Santa Monica - a town that, in 2019 and 2020, named TRIFIT Santa Monica’s Most Loved Gym. One Classy Mother Pupper HIT Living Foundation and Winston House in Venice host holiday fundraiser

By Kamala Kirk n Dec. 4, the HIT Living Foundation and Winston House in Venice hosted “One Classy Mother Pupper,” a holiday fundraiser with celebrities and animal lovers to raise funds to help rescue dogs.

The evening featured live performances

by DJ Kilmore of Incubus and the band Kids In America. In addition to drinks, appetizers and desserts, there was a silent auction that included VIP tickets to a Chargers game, a Fender Jaguar guitar signed by members of Incubus, a one-night stay in the King Loft Suite at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, and an Apple Watch, among other items.

Founded in 2018, the HIT Living Foundation is a nonprofit that focuses on dog rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming, as well as spay/neuter programs abroad.

All funds raised at the event were used to get dogs “New Home Ready,” providing them with a microchip, vaccines, leash, collar, tag and harness.

With open hearts and minds, HIT Living Foundation brings compassion to their work in animal and human welfare, and provides financial and physical assistance during times of crisis.

Celebrity designer Francesca Grace shares tips for adding holiday cheer to your home

State-of-the-art healing studio IntoMeSea opens in Santa Monica

By Michele Robinson he newly opened IntoMeSea in Santa Monica offers unique wellness services such as the healing powers of flotation meditation, light and salt therapy, and high-energy soaking, among others. What sets IntoMeSea apart from other places are not only the services they provide, but the story behind them.

IntoMeSea founder Jennifer Williams was exhausted from working as a licensed massage therapist. In 2014, after listening to a podcast she learned about flotation and set out to experience it herself. After her initial encounter, she was hooked and instantly knew that she wanted to open up her own place.

“I discovered the wonders of a regular flotation meditation practice where I felt sustained relief,” Williams said.

oldest spiritually honored practices to create a new type of center that has never existed before, to share with my community.”

Set into motion in 2017, Williams hired Venice native

and environmental architect, David Hertz, to design the 5,500-square-foot studio in Santa Monica. Hertz has decades of experience as a leading architect in designing green buildings. Some of the

sustainable features in the building include using rooftop solar panels for energy and collecting 300 gallons of water each day through extracting moisture from the air.

“The biggest challenge in starting IntoMeSea, hands down, was the construction,” Williams said. “It took 16 months just to get the plans approved by the City of Santa Monica, and then construction lasted for three years. There were many unforeseen trials and tribulations. It was a very steep learning curve.”

As for the name, IntoMeSea is a play on words.

“The name IntoMeSea comes from a play on the word ‘intimacy,’” Williams said.

“When the word is broken down, it becomes ‘Into Me See,’ or it can also be interpreted as ‘Into Me I See.’ Intimacy does not just have a physical or sexual meaning. It also means looking into oneself with

What used to be known as a sensory deprivation tank, IntoMeSea has coined flotation meditation. Selema Masekela debuts South African surf brand Mami Wata

Venice resident and TV host Selema Masekela is the co-founder of Mami Wata, a South African surf lifestyle brand dedicated to challenging the culture and norms surrounding the sport.

By Kamala Kirk he first time Selema Masekela visited South Africa was for his father’s homecoming tour in 1991 after Apartheid ended. The son of the late South African jazz legend, Hugh Masekela, Selema recalled being uncertain if he wanted to go at the time.

“Up until that point, my dad had been a political exile for 30 years and had not been allowed to go home,” Selema said.

“Then finally as things were starting to break down, the South African government started inviting exiles to come back home without having to fear for their lives or risk being thrown in prison. That was a moment that my dad had been fighting and waiting for all those years. He called me up and asked me to be a road manager on his tour, but I wasn’t sure that I wanted to go because there was a lot happening at the time.

South Africa was going through a big transition and it was dangerous.”

An avid surfer, Selema knew that South Africa had good

waves. Over the years, he had seen the results from various surf contests that took place at Jeffreys Bay and he had watched footage from surf movies, which spawned his desire to ride the waves there.

“The laws had just changed a few months before I visited and beaches that had been for white people only were suddenly open to everyone,” Selema said. “I went on that trip with my dad and by the time we got to the coast, I went to a surf shop, bought a board and went surfing in Durban. No one had seen a person who looked like me surfing there before and after the fourth day, the cops tried to arrest me. It was a wild experience to say the least. I also met many members of my family for the first time – uncles, aunts, grandparents and all these people from this fabric of who I was as a person that I’d been denied because of the crazy unjust system of Apartheid. I fell in love with South Africa and have been going back ever since. In 2019, I was commentating the World Surf League

event at Jeffreys Bay, which was something I never would have imagined. Now there are many kids that look like me, surfing and embracing the surf culture after a hundred years of being denied that right. It’s very powerful and amazing.”

In 2017, Selema was visiting South Africa to help care for his father, who was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer.

During his time there, Selema’s friend and South African fashion designer, Maria McCloy, told him about a group of guys in Cape Town (Andy Davis, Nick Dutton and Peet Pienaar) that he needed to meet who had a store and surf label called Mami Wata. They had made a short surf film called “Woza” that told the story of an African surfer.

“I was blown away because the film had a black protagonist as a surfer and it was normal, not a novelty,” Selema said. “It was so pivotal for me because that was something I never thought I would get to see. I reached out to the guys, we connected and started talking, then when I went to Cape Town to spend time

with them we all hit it off. I was really impressed by their brand and knew it would be successful in America, so they brought me on as a co-founder and we’ve been working together ever since.”

Dutton added, “I met with Selema in Cape Town just after we launched the brand, we had some mutual friends and connections who brought us together. We knew then it was a meeting of minds and ambitions.

His experience in global surf culture and the U.S., as well as his world view about the role the brand could have, led to a long and exciting discussion from which the only conclusion was that he joined the brand as a co-founder. The collaboration amongst the four of us is very productive. We’ve each got very different skill sets and experience that come together to create what Mami Wata is. What we have in common is the ambition for the brand and business and alignment around our vision to be a creative force for good in Africa.”

In West African Pidgin English,

Mami Wata means “Mother Ocean.” Coincidentally, Selema’s father wrote a song by the same name in 1975. Although the brand was founded in 2017, it recently debuted in the United States earlier this fall.

“The majority of the narrative of the surf lifestyle and culture has been dominated by places like Southern California, Australia and Hawaii,” Selema said. “Most of the aspiration of what it looks like to be a surfer has been through this limited lens, but the irony is that there is more surfable coastline in Africa than anywhere in the world and their surf culture dates back historically to the late 1600s.

Mami Wata is a brand that celebrates the ocean and surfing through a distinctively African lens. It has been incredibly well received in the U.S.” Dutton said, “People love a range of different things…the mission, the designs, challenging a very tired category and perhaps most importantly, challenging the surf culture and what it means to be a surfer. The response in Africa has been

ArgonautNews.com fantastic, especially from black and brown surfers. African surf culture broadly has a diversity that is as energetic and meaningful as Africa is, so when people see a brand sharing the culture globally they get pumped and proud.”

In addition to surfboards and accessories, Mami Wata has an apparel line made in Africa with homegrown raw and sustainable materials. Their Spring/Summer 2022 collection features colorful and unique motifs like dice paired with contemplative sayings sewn on the labels such as “Money cannot cure death.”

“I love how people can take that in different directions, something as simple as a dice image can mean something to one person and something else to another,” Selema said. “I also love the way the messaging makes people stop and think to figure out what each saying means to them. I hope that when someone picks up one of our pieces to wear, that it’s mood lifting.”

Originally the plan was to

launch in the U.S. in 2019, but after COVID-19 happened the group had to pivot and change plans while maintaining their momentum. During the pandemic they created and released “AFROSURF,” a 320-page coffee table book that features stunning photographs, profiles and stories from African surfers, writers and photographers that explore and showcase the unique culture of 18 coastal countries in Africa. The book was also named the number one coffee table book holiday gift by The New York Times.

“Our book has defied all expectations and it’s been crazy to see the way people have digested it,” Selema said. “It shows surfing through a very diverse lens. It gives you a taste and feel of what modern African culture looks like across the continent and how that feeds into creating this different experience of surf culture than what most people have been shown.”

Mami Wata is a West African phrase for “Mother Ocean,” and the brand’s Spring/Summer 2022 apparel collection features colorful and unique pieces made from raw and sustainable African materials.

The son of the late jazz musician Hugh Masekela, Selema first traveled to South Africa for his father’s homecoming tour in 1991, and it has become one of his favorite places to surf over the years.

“Surfers Not Street Children is an incredible organization in Durban that helps street children and at-risk children by giving them a place to live and learn, and they’re able to build a relationship with the ocean and surfing,” Selema said. “It changes their lives and they build self-confidence, pride and joy. Waves for Change helps communities build real relationships with surfing, to help people deal with different types of trauma, as well as those who are dealing with emotional challenges. People learn to have a sense of ownership in that space and see the ocean as a place to go heal.”

Selema, who has been surfing for 33 years, found solace in the sport when his family moved from the East Coast to Carlsbad during his junior year of high school. Feeling displaced, he took up surfing and immediately became addicted to how it made him feel.

“It was the most holy, spiritual experience I’d ever had,” Selema said. “When I stood up on a wave at 16, it felt like time stopped and the heavens parted.

I didn’t see it as a hobby, it became an immediate obsession for me and changed my entire direction.”

Selema went on to pursue a successful career as a TV host and correspondent, announcing at live events and working for

major networks like ESPN, HBO and MTV. His work has taken him around the world, from surf competitions in Tahiti to the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

He also has had the opportunity to surf across the globe and some of his favorite surfing spots include Jeffreys Bay, Toberua Island in Fiji, the Maldives, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, and the Mentawai Island chain off Indonesia’s western coast of Sumatra.

“Surfing has allowed me to see the world and build a connection with people, who despite our cultural differences, we share this thread and have become family,” Selema said. “It breaks down language barriers and it’s truly an incredible feeling to share with others.”

In 2004, Selema moved from San Diego to Venice Beach after his career started to take off and he needed to be closer to LA for work opportunities. He was drawn to Venice for its grit and the diversity of its people and cultures.

“Venice is one of the few places in LA where I can walk out of my house and see white, brown, black people of various economic levels all on the same block,” Selema said. “People who live here accept that nothing is perfect and good all the time. In other parts of LA, people want to show that their lives are perfect every day, but that doesn’t serve me. I also love the relationship I have with the ocean here, and there are small windows of really good surf, so I appreciate it so much more and

am very grateful on days when the waves are good.”

Looking ahead, Selema is excited for the future of Mami Wata. The brand has two special collaborations planned for 2022 and 2023, and he also mentioned the possibility of the “AFROSURF” book becoming a docuseries.

“We’re continuing to build relationships with distributors and boutiques across the country, places that take pride in and support telling our story,” Selema said. “I love that this brand is a Trojan horse for African discovery and we’re coming into a greater awareness of what is taking place on the continent and changing the narrative of how people perceive Africa. I was recently at a book signing in Brooklyn for ‘AFROSURF’ and was amazed by the number of people standing in line who told me that a brand like ours with imagery that looks like them has done so much for their confidence when they were struggling to find others to identify with. They feel like they can walk differently and have a sense of pride now. I’m immensely proud of where we’ve gotten and where we can go.”

Spirited and Mindful Art

Artist Alison Saar curated her first group show at L.A. Louver, “SeenUNseen,” a group show featuring the work of 10 artists who try to capture spirits in their work using a variety of media.

By Bridgette M. Redman rt helps us to have conversations about abstract issues, about concepts that transcend our physical forms, and about those things which we cannot perceive with our usual senses.

L.A. Louver is currently hosting two exhibitions providing a platform for discussing those ideas through art. Their shows, Don Suggs’ “Out of Body” and “Seen/ UNseen,” run through Jan. 8 in Venice.

A

Louver showcases artist’s last body of work The “Out of Body” exhibition features five large paintings by Suggs, who passed away in July 2019 when he was hit by a car while walking. It was his original intent to make 10 paintings in the series, but he was only able to accomplish five of them.

“They are called ‘out of body’ because they are literally out of the body of his own work,” said Elizabeth East, L.A. Louver director and the curator of the

exhibition. “He basically went into his archive of paintings and selected a number of works he wanted to readdress. These were completed works, fully resolved that had been in shows before.”

Suggs then began to work over these older works, adding shapes and overlaying new images. Before he died, he gave a statement about his intent and process.

“The core idea is one of interposition,” he wrote.

“Pre-existing pictures are overlaid with three simple forms: circles, bars and occasional ‘bumps.’…The circle/bar combination can be read as ‘pendulum,’ and the re-resolved painting can be thought of as appended.”

L.A. Louver worked with the artist’s widow to put together the show. The focus is on the five large paintings that Suggs created as part of the “Out of Body” series, but they are also presenting work from three different series Suggs did related to the paintings. All done in 2016, they preceded the paintings.

In one, he is taking digital versions of earlier artworks and reworking it based on the image of the painting. It led him to the work he did where he worked over the actual painting.

“Something that has to be underscored is that there was no sense he felt the original painting was unfinished,” East said. “It was providing another layer of conversation. He was readdressing these paintings using this abstract language he had developed.”

L.A. Louver had worked with Suggs since the late 1970s, so for them there was no question that they would display this work.

“With over four decades of being champions of his work, it was an obvious and natural choice to show this last body of work,” East said. “We have always felt that his rigor as an artist and the sort of sincerity and truth by which he approaches his work has always come through in a very profound way.

Like many of his pieces, these are perplexing works. They confound the viewer in some instances and they operate in

multiple ways. They operate aesthetically, but also emotionally and certainly intellectually.

They appeal in so many different ways and that is their strength.”

Group show captures unseen spirits The “Seen/UNseen” exhibition was curated by Alison Saar, a group show featuring the work of 10 artists who try to capture spirits in their work using a variety of media. It looks at the ways images can be manipulated to capture phenomenal presences.

The news release for the exhibit says they gathered artists who are believers, agitators, healers and mediums who draw upon history, folklore, politics and ancestral inheritance. The artists are Jojo Abot, Rina Banerjee, Vanessa German, Kathy Grove, Julia Haft-Candell, Keisha Scarville, Ricardo Vicente Jose Ruiz, Kenyatta A.C. Hinckle, Arthur Simms and Saar herself.

Abot became a part of the show after Saar visited her solo

show last May and wanted to include some of her pieces in the exhibit. A multi-disciplinary artist, her works in this exhibition combine yarn, beads and paint upon a canvas.

“It was a sort of collaboration between myself and pre-existing material, which comes from parts of Africa,” Abot said.

“That became the foundation for the piece. You have my work which is the impressions made upon it with the acrylic and the yarn and the thread added on.”

Her heritage contributes to and permeates her work. She said that as an African, there will always be a physical or metaphysical collaboration between who she is and the incarnation of who her people are. Those are things that she feels come through in her work authentically because it is a part of her.

Consciousness is an important practice for Abot. She wants to remain connected to her god state as often as possible, if not full time.

“There is nothing I do that is devoid or absent of that state of consciousness,” Abot said. “I

She has high praise for Saar’s work and was honored to be asked to participate in “Seen/ Unseen” and that Saar came to her solo show.

“To meet her in that way and to see that relationship has been a beautiful gift,” Abot said. “L.A. Louver feels like a family. It’s been around a long time and the founder has a great devotion to and love for art.”

Being a late entry into the show, she’s enjoyed discovering the other artists that are a part of it.

“That’s been an incredible joy just witnessing how people embody their calling, how people practice their own alchemy,” Abot said. “And then to experience the collective voice that is led by Alison’s vision — it really feels very cohesive, very clear, very rich.

It feels intentional and all those things deeply resonate with me and my philosophies. I’ve felt

good every time I’ve been there.

It feels like it has energy that holds you, but also invites you into imagination and wonder.”

Saar’s contribution to the exhibition is a life-sized female figure surrounded by mirrors and bits of flash to attract wandering spirits. It is in the south gallery and the work represents an interlocutor between our world and the next.

It draws from stories of Yoruba tradition, layered with those of classical Greek myth.

While Saar has exhibited with L.A. Louver since 2006, this is the first exhibition she has curated for the gallery. In so doing, she found works that communicate with each other in different ways.

German’s mixed media sculptures are assembled from found materials, each with their own history. Scarville reanimates clothing that once belonged to her late mother.

Simms’ assemblage works use found material that builds upon historical artistic personalities and movements. Works from Hinkle and Ruiz build upon social movements and use the language of change for such

movements as Black Lives Matter and indigenous communities.

Venice mural supports local artist and small businesses

By Jenn McKee here are many vibrant murals around Venice Beach, but only one offers the chance to get some holiday shopping done while looking at it.

Google and American Express have teamed up to commission four “shoppable murals,” each created by a local artist in a foot-traffic-heavy locale (Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York) to highlight offerings from several small local businesses before the holidays.

“Each mural is shoppable with Google Lens, so you literally just point your phone, take a picture, and it pulls up the item and you buy it,” said Stephanie Horton, Google Shopping’s director of marketing.

Local artist Crisselle Mendiola designed a bright, fun, beachmanga style mural – located at Ocean Front Walk and 19th Avenue in Venice – featuring products “ranging from scented candles to teas to beauty products,” Horton said. “All things that are great for gifting this holiday season.”

But this wasn’t the only criterion for inclusion in the mural.

“We definitely wanted to have a nice range of diversity,” Horton said. “So womenowned, black-owned, LGBTQ-

This is in part a response to tracking what consumers now prioritize when “shopping their values.”

know there’s a definite demand, and that people are looking for these types of opportunities,” said Liz Schulten, a member of Google’s communications team.

“We also know that 60% of U.S. consumers who are planning to shop for the holidays say they want to shop small and local businesses. So one of the things we want to do is meet the consumer where they are.”

The goals of the shoppable mural project also align with Google Shopping’s ongoing partnership with the 15 Percent Pledge, a nonprofit that challenges companies to commit 15% of their shelf space to products from black-owned businesses. (Fashion designer and activist Aurora James, following George Floyd’s murder, launched the 15 Percent Pledge via an Instagram post.)

Thus far, 28 retailers have signed on, and James has, in the interim, amassed 1,200 blackowned businesses into a database.

“But some of them haven’t had the training, the skill set, to really understand the digital landscape and how to capitalize there,” said Horton. “ … So one of the things we’re doing is creating a series of trainings for all the black businesses in (James’) database, so that they’re up to speed on every-

thing they need to know. It’s a two year partnership, and we’re really excited to be able to help there as well. It’s a great initiative.”

The murals, of course, offer a far more visible means of connecting consumers to small business owners. Yet you might wonder how much freedom Mendiola (and the other three mural artists) had when creating the design.

“We actually gave them a lot of leeway,” Horton said. “Really the only requirement from our end is that Google Lens would be able to pick (the image) up, so things had to be identifiable.

But I think one of the great things about this project is that they’re each so endemic to each city, because it is that artist’s style.”

Aesthetics aside, the artist also, in each case, had to educate consumers about how to use the mural for its intended purpose.

“We looked at a draft of the first one, and we were like, ‘There are no directions. How are people going to know what to do?’” Horton said. “So there’s a part of the mural that’s dedicated to, like, this is how you do it, step by step, so that it’s pretty well documented in a big space on the corner of each mural.”

The murals have only been up

a few weeks, but anecdotally, the featured businesses are seeing positive bumps in online traffic.

“And one of the New York businesses actually got a corporate order from someone seeing (the mural), so there’s definitely been some nice notoriety, and people are noticing businesses they never knew about,” Horton said.

Google Shopping and American Express will do some real number crunching after the murals come down, to assess how much positive impact they had on the businesses featured.

In the meantime, it’s hard not to wonder whether the murals point toward our collective shopping future.

“Consumers are definitely discovering things more digitally these days, so I think a business’s aptitude and digital presence is really important,” Horton said. “Brick and mortar is always here to stay, but I think people now want choice.

Our part in this is to make sure these small businesses have the opportunity to connect with even more consumers, because we do see that the COVID trend of people shopping more online is definitely here to stay, so you want to make sure you have all the tips and tools to be able to maximize your impact there.”

I spent an entire Sunday with a really cute guy I met through a dating app. We kissed a bit, and I stayed over at his place (though I said no sex). Things felt weird Monday morning, so I texted to see whether we were still on for dinner. He asked to push it to Tuesday, but I had a conflict and asked whether the weekend would work. He never responded. That weekend, I saw him out with guy friends, but he basically ignored me. I got him alone and asked him to go home with me. He declined. “Just for tonight or forever?” I asked. He said, “Just tonight.” That was the last I heard from him, and I’m going crazy trying to figure this out.

— No Closure If you really, really need closure, date a door.

It’s normal to want closure: defined by psychologist Arie Kruglanski as “an answer on a given topic, any answer.”

We’re deeply disturbed by “confusion and ambiguity” – a cloudy mess of unanswered questions – and we feel driven (and even desperate) to replace it with a solid brick wall of facts.

A practical (though admittedly cuckoo-sounding) solution might be trying to fire up a quirk of the mind psychologist Elizabeth Loftus calls the “imagination inflation effect”: our

tendency to convert events we imagine and then repeatedly recall into “false memories” we come to believe are the real deal.

These invented memories tend to be “stickier” when they include rich detail, like the guy – reeking of BO! – hanging his head and confessing he weenied out of admitting it was “goodbye forever.”

Don’t forget to script his explanation – ideally something torment-avenging and wounded ego-soothing. My suggestion: Despite your radiant beauty and extreme awesomeness, he’ll need approximately 65.3 years of therapy before he’ll be ready for a relationship.

If, after giving this tactic a good repetitive try, your mental hellscape hasn’t faded substantially, there’s an alternative approach: accepting there are things we just can’t know and shifting out of the “WHYWHYWHY?!” by, say, reciting the alphabet backward or shifting into pre-planned healthy replacement thoughts.

The unfortunate reality: Closure should be considered a self-service item, as you can’t control what others say or do – though you could make serious headway by kidnapping and torturing them till they talk. Of course, I’m not advising this – though, to be fair, it can lead to some major benefits: both in the form of answers and in being rewarded for your troubles with an all-expensepaid cozy new home...uh, in SuperMax.

BARKING BAD I read your response to “Conflicted” (the woman dating a guy so needy he wanted her to ditch all her friends and spend every minute with him). I suggest you tell her it’ll never work out and she should date someone else.

— Advice From 60-Something Male Telling people what to do is necessary in certain situations, like when it’s a more successful battle strategy than “You do you!”: dispatching the troops to engage in the military version of interpretive dance.

However, in general, direct advice – “Do this!” or “Do that!” – tends to backfire big-time, revving up a state psychologist Jack Brehm calls “psychological reactance.” “Reactance” describes our fear-driven freakout – our reaction – when we perceive a threat to our freedom to do as we choose. We go on the defensive – rebel against being controlled – typically by doing whatever we were doing...only longer, stronger and louder.

Understanding this is why I’m an advice columnist who specializes in NOT giving advice. I use hedgywedgy language like “you might” and “you could” that leaves big wideopen spaces for personal choice.

Accordingly, instead of telling this woman, “Dump Mr. Needypants pronto!” I offered reasons the two MIGHT be a bad match. I also identified potential stumbling blocks – like being a “My needs last!” habitual “pleaser” – and suggested practical steps she could take to kick them out of the way.

My ultimate goal is helping people help themselves: giving them the psychological and behavioral chops they need to render me unnecessary! I typically retell the story they’ve told me in ways I hope will help them gain perspective – that is, understand what they’re going through and why. I then lay out a set of tools – ways they might tweak their thinking and behavior – in hopes of empowering them to dig themselves out.

Basically, my column is the advice version of that well-worn fish saying – uh, as I like to rewrite it: Give a woman a fish and she’ll have dinner.

Teach a woman to fish and she’ll have dinner for a lifetime...OR – let’s be honest – because my column and I are big on realism: She’ll order her fish dinner in a Paris bistro, poring over photos of a fabulous Chanel fly-casting suit and sketching out her plot to rob the Louvre to pay for it.

Buying a Home as an Unmarried Couple: What to Know It’s increasingly common for people to live together but not be married. For example, in the past 20 years, the number of unmarried couples living together has almost tripled.

You might be planning to wait to get married, or maybe you’re not going to at all, but what if you want to buy a home together?

It’s possible to buy a home as an unmarried couple, but it can be a little more complex than it is for a married couple.

The following are some considerations to proactively think about before you start the process.

Who’s Going To Apply for the Mortgage?

When you aren’t married, but you want to buy a home together, one of the first things you’ll have to think about is who’s applying for the mortgage. The person in the relationship who has the strongest financial history is the one who needs to do it in almost all cases.

When you aren’t married, you have to apply as individuals typically.

Go over financial factors like credit scores, incomes, debt-to-income ratios, employment status, and assets to figure out

who has the stronger financial standing. Not only will that person have a better likelihood of approval, but they’ll also qualify for better terms like lower interest rates.

Some lenders may let you apply for a mortgage together, although it’s not extremely common. If you apply together, it can help or hurt you. The benefit is that you may qualify for a larger mortgage since you have a combination of two incomes.

The downside might be if your partner has a lower credit score, and the lender could base their decision on that.

How Will You Hold the Title?

The title of a home is proof of ownership.

There are a few options here: • Joint tenancy is one option in which both you and your partner will have equal shares of your property. This will include the right of survivorship, meaning that if one of you passes away, the survivor will receive the deceased’s half of the property.

• Another way to deal with the title is called tenants in common. Under this arrangement, you’re co-owners with equal rights to the property. It’s different from joint tenancy because you hold titles individually for your share of the property. You can dispose of your individual ownership. There

isn’t a right of survivorship and the other partner doesn’t receive the decedent’s property share if they pass away. Instead, the property would go to the heirs of the person who passed away.

• A living trust of real property is a way to set up the arrangement also. The trustee holds the title for the beneficiary who has all of the management responsibilities and rights.

What About a Cohabitation Property Agreement?

Whether you’re married or not, when you buy a property together, you’re going to accumulate equity. However, you’re not going to have the same level of property protection as a married couple, meaning you might want to go further to protect yourself.

One way to do this is to have an attorney create what’s called a cohabitation property agreement, outlining who owns what.

This is something you’ll fall back on if you separate.

A cohabitation agreement should outline how you’ll share expenses related to the home you buy, buyout terms, an exit strategy if one of you wants to sell, and a process for how you’ll resolve any disputes.

Your cohabitation agreement will also

include the type of ownership on the title and deed.

Other Considerations There are a few other things to think about in addition to what’s above.

First, if your name is on a mortgage and your partner stops contributing to payments for any reason, you’re both equally liable. If you can’t make the payments without their financial contribution, you may be faced with foreclosure.

If you get a joint loan, your name will stay on the mortgage unless you refinance.

Finally, only one of you is eligible for the mortgage interest tax deduction since unmarried couples file taxes separately.

The best thing to do before buying a house as an unmarried couple is sit down and carefully go through your finances, and make sure you’re on the same page before you proceed with anything.
