A crisis of compassion, not housing Editor: Hooray! The county tells us we have housed 229 people last month. Unfortunately, 234 new people fell into homelessness in that same period! No wonder the streets, encampments and neighborhood tent counts look dismal…worser and worser.

The largest groups of people to become homeless are the elderly, recently incarcerated and youth aging out of the foster system. And we overwhelmingly do not welcome these folks to our neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, a four-story giant is being completed across the street from our modest single-family house. It will likely stay at least half unoccupied for six months or longer as the Westside housing prices continue to climb and the fentanyl prices decline.

We have a compassion crisis as much or more than a housing crisis. No small part of the solution is Permanent Supportive Housing, but good luck trying to find a location for low-cost housing short of a full court press by attorneys for outraged home owners. Landlords and homeowners could do a great deal to reduce the concern and even hysteria over affordable housing.

The T-shirt reading “I support housing for unhoused people in my neighborhood” should become a middle-class mantra rather than a cautionary alert for people attacking the local politician.

Mar Vista Venice American Traquero Monument Editor: My name is Laura Ceballos, a Venice native and community organizer in Venice.

I am also the committee chair and project manager for the Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument that will be placed at Windward Circle.

The Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument was passed unanimously by the LA City Council on May 5, 2021. Our beloved civil rights leader Dolores Huerta spoke in support of the project. The Venice Community Housing Project will not degrade the Traquero Mexican Railroad Landmark. The entire Venice Traquero Committee and a majority of the Brown Community in Venice strongly support the Venice Community Housing Project that will be built in Venice.

Sonya Reese is spreading false information and misleading the LA City Council about the Venice Community Housing Project and the Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument. I find her actions disrespectful to the Mexican Community in Venice.

There are attempts being made

by Jim Murez, Robin Murez, Mark Ryavec, Sonya Reese, Robert Haro (a vendido from Casablanca Restaurant) and others to block affordable housing in Venice for low-income families and to prevent the Venice Mexican American Traquero Monument from moving forward.

For clarification, Mexican history is embedded in the city of LA and California. It is a critical part of the birth of LA and California. These attempts are racially motivated. This group

claims that they support the Traquero Monument and Affordable Housing, but oppose the location. These bigoted attitudes by so called Community Representatives are racial discrimination against a minority community.

I am sure that if high-rise condominiums for the wealthy were being built, there would be no issues with the project.

This is the same guy who accused me of smoking weed because I wrote about the protection of the trees in Marina del Rey. I also saw him give the bird to people at a public meeting because they disagreed with his position to “restore” the Ballona Wetlands.

It is irresponsible to spend 9 years and $270 million of the

taxpayers’ money on 566 acres of state-owned land for a make-work project in a state where a total of 8,367 fires burned 3,083,507 acres this year alone, regardless of what a so-called SoCal Gas “environmentalist” claims.

More Reasons to Stop Drilling for Oil off the Coast

By Harris Silver here was no storm, no tidal wave, no earthquake, no act of nature that ruptured a 17-mile, 40-year-old pipeline three miles off the coast of Southern California that led to an unknown quantity of oil to spill into the Pacific Ocean.

Rather, it was – as all oil spills are – a preventable act of man.

Oil is toxic to marine life. While there have been reports of birds soaked in oil and dead fish, dead animals are not a way to keep score. They don’t begin to tell the story of the devastation to all marine life from an oil spill including to plankton, a food source to large and small aquatic animals. They don’t begin to shift our understanding of the ocean from a place that holds life to something that itself is alive.

While an investigation will take months to complete the initial cause of the leak, is the likely entanglement of a cargo ship’s anchor with the undersea pipeline. While this may havehappened, it is not the cause of

the leak. The cause of the leak is greed, lack of accountability, and a broken regulatory system that allows for the unsafe extraction and transportation of oil through aging and improperly maintained network of underwater pipelines.

It’s not a surprise that the owner of the pipeline Amplify Energy has a history of financial and regulatory troubles. When a company loses $35 million on revenue of $80 million as Amplify did last quarter, I assure you that there are not conversations about how to spend more money on maintenance, training and procedures to increase safety.

This is a company that is trying to stay afloat by milking an aging infrastructure for every last dollar in order to make payroll and meet their debt obligations. Management is concerned about bankers and their papers not clean water and marine life.

I can assure you that when they do a costs analysis on infrastructure maintenance they don’t understand the costs. Because if they did, they wouldn’t be

pumping oil through 40-year-old steel pipes lying on the ocean floor; they would shut the whole thing down, knowing that the risk was too great.

The marine environment is harsh and unforgiving for all materials, especially steel, which the pipeline is made from. The design life of the pipeline is 25 years yet this pipeline was 15 years past its design life.

The operators of the pipeline were alerted to the spill by a sheen of oil on the water’s surface. One has to wonder why a drop in pressure (which indicates an oil spill) wouldn’t have been cause for the immediate shutdown of the pipeline? One has to wonder why shutting the pipeline down isn’t automated as a safety precaution when there is a drop in pressure?

Perhaps the investigation will speak of this when its complete.

Out of date equipment, equipment that is not maintained properly, poor training, not following procedures, putting profits over safety. All of this may

or may not come out in the investigation. We will see.

But what we won’t see is the root cause of this problem is there is no accountability. The regulators are not accountable for allowing a financially unstable company to operate a pipeline decades past its design life. The company after polluting the commons has to only inform the coast guard. There are no other repercussions other than the pressure on its stock price, which will recover quicker than the effects of the spill.

As oil spills aren’t acts of nature but rather acts of man, imagine a scenario where all parties involved were held accountable?

If the company knew that their permits to operate a pipeline would be revoked if they spilled oil, do you think this would have happened? If the company knew that they would be held financially responsible for all the costs associated with a spill would they be able to post an appropriate sized bond or hold enough insurance? And if they were

insured would the insurance company require a higher standard of operational safety in order to justify the risk of writing the policy? Would the mangers of the company make the same decisions around maintenance, training and procedures if they knew they would be personally held accountable if a spill were to occur? Make no mistake that decisions would be made in a different way leading to different outcomes if there were accountability.

While the spill is unnatural, what is natural is for all of us to be upset by it. We feel a sense of resignation, that there is nothing to be done to prevent it. We think in terms of accidents, or reasons with causation and inevitabilities.

We don’t see this for what it is really is. How can we when the truth is an unimaginable nightmare?

This spill was not only avoidable, it was completely unnecessary as both the oil is unnecessary as is the revenue it provides to the state of California. Yes, we may

need to oil run things, but we don’t need this oil. Whatever the investigation determines, it was not an anchor that caused this; rather, it is a broken system that allows an unqualified financially shaky company to control valuable resource extraction licenses that require skill and capital to maintain properly in aging infrastructure without proper regulatory oversight.

Perhaps this is where of sense of dread comes from. From feeling all of this without being able to state it. It’s hard to remember nightmares. It’s long past time to end oil drilling off the coast of California. That is the only outcome as the reasons for this spill greed, exploitation and gaming of regulations with no accountability are problems that will never be solved until there is a systemic change starting with a government that works for the public to the protect the commons and not corporate interests who are in business to exploit them, and as we know, the costs are just too high.

The SMHS marching band, which consists of 117 students from all grade levels, earned an overall score of 80.75 and placed first in three different categories including Band, Color Guard and Percussion.

“The growth from the previous tournament and the increase of energy, especially among the younger and newer members, has to be my favorite thing about this competition,” said Kevin McKeown, marching band director.

The SMHS marching band performs at home football games, as well as many school and community events. They also participate and compete in parades and field shows. The marching band is happy to be

back in-person this year following 2002, when competitions and events were shut down due to the pandemic.

“We are going to do well,” McKeown said. “There is great energy and positive attitudes coming from the students and we hope to keep it going in through the final stretch.”

LAcarGUY opens new dealership in Santa Monica

By Michele Robinson ecently, LAcarGuy opened Genesis Santa Monica – their 13th car dealership and sixth in Santa Monica. This award-winning billion dollar company with over 900 employees is run by one family: the Sullivans.

The secret driving the company to success is strong family ties. It all started with Wilfred H. “Sully” Sullivan, who was the general manager of Volkswagen Santa Monica in 1964 and bought it in 1969.

Sully owned and operated the first dealership and brought his son, Mike, on board in 1976.

Mike worked up through the ranks and eventually bought out his father in 1989. With Mike at the helm, the expansion started and LAcarGUY was born. Mike bought Lexus in 1993 and other dealerships soon followed; now they own seven brands.

“It was a natural and steady growth. I wanted to grow slowly and stay in the area,” Mike said.

LAcarGUY is the corporate name that Mike came up with 35 years ago. Even back then, he was concerned that the brick and mortar stores would be dated so he created a one word website name to transition into the digital age.

“I’ve been lucky to be a little ahead of the curve,” Mike said.

Staying ahead of the curve also includes helping the environment. As a company, LAcarGuy has been instrumental in the green car movement since 1997 when they launched the Toyota Prius. They chose to add Genesis, the luxury model of Hyundai, as their newest car dealership because Genesis will debut their first fully-electric model: the Electrified G80.

LAcarGUY now offers 30 “green” models including hybrid, plug-in, EV and Alternative Fuel vehicles.

“How do we change today for what the future will bring tomorrow?” Mike said.

Continuing the tradition to keep it all in the family, Mike brought on his three children to help run the corporation. His oldest son, Sean, is currently the president. His second son, Kelly, is in charge of real estate and his daughter, Meghan, is the

Mikes hopes his grandchildren will also follow in these footsteps when they are old enough to participate.

“Three generations all get together and get along,” Mike said.

What is interesting and a little surprising is that the car dealership is only about 50 percent of how the family corporation thrives. The other half is in real estate run by Kelly. The family owns apartment buildings and the land that is under their dealerships. They buy land, wait for the lease to expire and then can expand.

“It is a broader base to have choices,” Mike said.

Another wonderful aspect of the Sullivan family is how much they give back to the community. Meghan runs many events though the Family Foundation. Mike is the upcoming Board Chair for Heal the Bay and for the past 10 years has been involved in Grades of Green, where kids are taught how to implement sustainable practices for the environment and bring home

Partnering with companies like Subaru for the past 10 years, the Sullivans have put on dog adoption events with Gone to the Dogs.

“The kids from Grades of Greens wanted to do a project,” Mike said. “They made dog toys and sold them at the dog adoption event.”

Mike is grateful for all that he and his family have accomplished and the positive impact they have had on the community over the years.

“For 45 years, I have had a great and blessed career,” Mike said.

Wellness on the Road

Mobile spa brings feminine healing to homes and events

By Bridgette M. Redman reasure Thompson knows how hard it can be to travel around Los Angeles to seek out needed wellness services. It’s why she bought and renovated a 35-foot bus and is taking the luxuries of NuEnergySpa on the road after having to close her storefront spa when the pandemic hit.

“I felt these services were needed,” Thompson said. “People were contacting me, asking when I would be available and how could I create a pandemic-proof service.”

Thompson, who has earned the moniker Yoniologist, specializes in vaginal wellness, offering such services as yoni steaming or a vaginal mask. (Yoni is the Indian word for female genitalia.) Those entering the mobile spa can also experience a cupping massage, a pink Himalayan salt chamber, teeth whitening, cool mist chromotherapy or ionic detoxification.

Her plan started out with pen, paper and the drawing of a square. Neither she nor the person remodeling the bus had anyone else they could draw upon for ideas — Thompson was the first person to do this. They worked back and forth, modifying things, trying to make things more efficient, discussing all the things she wanted in the bus.

“You can’t have services for women without a bathroom,” Thompson said. “You have to have running water. Also, I love to cater organic and alcoholic drinks depending on the time of the event, so I had a bar installed in the bus. I have a photo op station in the front of the bus so

you can have a nice Instagrammable moment.”

It wasn’t Thompson’s first time delivering services via a mobile bus. She has kids and purchased a game bus for them that travels around with six televisions and video gaming systems. She also saw there were truck services for guys such as barber shops, but she wanted something for women.

“I really wanted to bring a feminine healing experience that could come to you,” Thompson said. “For a lot of women, it is hard to travel. We have kids, we do a lot at home. We have to have our ladies’ night at home. It will be nice to have something that can come to you so you don’t have to go far. You don’t have to make the trip to a luxury environment, it comes to you.”

In her research, Thompson came across the word “sparty” for spa parties, a word used a lot in Europe. Most of those were for facials and nail packages, so Thompson wanted to do something different.

Some of her Sparty experiences include “Deluxe Sistars Spa Experience,” “Bridal Sparty” and “Not Seniors Just Sexier” and range from two and a half to five hours. The bus can accommodate up to six people for a spa party (plus service providers).

Thompson will also take the bus to different events and places in LA so people can receive walk-up services.

herself as an educator on vaginal wellness, something that a lot of people feel uncomfortable talking about. She has newsletters and a YouTube channel, but her main focus is one-on-one conversations with people.

“We already know it is an uncomfortable conversation,” Thompson said. “For me, I’m not being modest, but people feel more comfortable with someone who is attractive telling them something uncomfortable. If I can sit and be comfortable talking about vaginal discharge and odors, or if I’m feeling itchy and I have proof that these things are working, you believe me.”

Thompson said she focuses on the educational aspect of things because she wants people to know about it, whether they get services from her or others.

“You can do this at home or you can come to me for more of an experience,” Thompson said. “To come on the bus is a sisterly bonding experience. You get to put on the gowns, sit on the steaming thrones, relax and mingle. It’s a bonding thing.”

Thompson explained that yoni steaming has been around for centuries. There is evidence of its existence in China, Haiti and Africa. The herbal blend she uses incorporates rose petals, lavender, motherwort, rosemary, mug wort, calendula, albizia, oregano, safflower, turmeric, basil and aloe.

She said that steaming provides vaginal lubrication and different herbs provide different benefits.

“There are a lot of holistic, organic benefits to using herbal steam,” Thompson said. “An open-minded person who is open to trying alternative methods will receive these natural benefits.”

She pointed out that these herbal remedies are not medically proven, but she has experienced their benefits since she was a child and her family relied on a book of remedies. In addition to holistic/health benefits, she said there are also rejuvenating and relaxing benefits.

“It actually feels good,” Thompson said. “We like to be relaxed. Why wouldn’t we want to have a warm, steaming mist on our vagina while also having healing benefits? It is an amazing experience and it has no negative effects where it will hurt you. I feel as though every woman should try it.”

The unique bus was custom designed to provide yoni steaming services for women, along with teeth whitening, cupping, ionic detoxification and cool mist chromotherapy.

Mobile spa offers several Distinctive services While yoni steaming is popular among Thompson’s guests, it isn’t the only service she offers.

The bus has an area where guests can lay down and she can focus on a section of the body — arms, legs, back, torso or face — and provide cupping services.

She uses silicon cups rather than the glass ones. She has four different sizes that are used on different areas of the body. She first applies a softening agent to make it easier to suction the body.

She uses it to relieve cellulite, even out skin tone and improve blood circulation.

Ionic detoxification is another service which she can provide to up to two people at a time. They put their feet into mini-tubs with disposable plastic liners. Ions are placed inside the tub of water and belts are fitted around the guest’s stomach or wrist. It detoxifies the body in a service that can last 10 to 30 minutes. The water in the tub will change colors depending on what the body is detoxing.

“If you have a yeast infection in your vagina, white cheesy particles will come out in the water,” Thompson said. “If it is brown, you’re detoxing tobacco.

If there are red spots, you might have blood clots that are shaking out. Whatever it is that you are detoxing, it will actually show up in the water and I have a chart of what each color means on the bus.”

Cool mist chromotherapy is delivered in the mobile spa’s pink Himalayan salt room. The guest can use a remote control to change each color to whatever they would like. Thompson said that different colors have various healing benefits and there is a cool mist spray that can be

controlled by guests because it can get warm.

Thompson offers three different vaginal jelly masks which are placed on the vulva: a 24-carat gold mask, a pink mask and a lacey mask. The masks look like panty liners and lay across the vulva going down to the perineum. Each mask offers different benefits from tightening to rejuvenating. Guests can wear a disposable gown or nothing at all.

The jelly masks remain on the body for 20 minutes.

Thompson also offers teeth whitening services, which she expects to be most popular with bridal packages.

“We have to have our smile,” Thompson said. “If people are getting their jelly masks and steams before their wedding or as part of their bachelorette party, then teeth whitening would definitely be essential.”

The mobile spa will travel throughout Venice Beach and wherever else there is a demand.

Thompson does this because it is something she genuinely loves.

“I love helping people,” Thompson said. “I know it works because it worked for me. I just love the fact that I can create experiences for people. This is something everybody should know about and have in her life.

We’re talking holistic and more natural routes to be more vibrant, have better energy and prolong our life. I feel as though I’m just the person to come to. I’m just the vibe.”

Nutcracker Sisters Dancing siblings help bring back holiday classic

By Bridgette M. Redman he dancers of Westside Ballet were eager to get back on Santa Monica College’s Broad Stage this year and perform the perennial favorite “The Nutcracker” for the large audiences that they missed last year.

The show opened last weekend and will continue for three shows this coming Saturday and Sunday. It is a performance that will welcome back a former dancer in the principal role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and feature a set of twins and two members of a set of triplets in several other roles.

Daniella Zhou, a high school senior, returned from Miami to

dance the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Zhou joined Westside Ballet when she was 11 and has danced with them for the past nine years — until this past August when she was offered a place with the Pre-Professional Division at Miami City Ballet for their 2021-2022 season. “(Daniella) ascended through the levels by her natural talent, combined with a strong work ethic, strength and sublime artistry,” said Martine Harley, Westside Ballet’s artistic director. “She brings incredible variety and distinctive traits to whatever she dances. Her composure, grace, dedication and humility –– both on and off stage –– are quite rare. We are

absolutely elated to have Daniella make her debut as the Sugar Plum Fairy in our 2021 return-to-the-stage “Nutcracker” production, which promises to highlight Daniella’s gorgeous style.”

The former Santa Monica resident is thrilled to be returning to dance in “The Nutcracker.”

“I’m honestly just excited to go back and see the teachers I’ve known for years and the people who helped me get where I am,” Zhou said. “I haven’t seen The Broad Stage for a while. We missed a whole year and that is such a special place to me. I’m so excited to be back in the theater and perform for a big

audience again.”

Sisters dance in featured roles It’s a sentiment echoed by many of the other dancers in the troupe — including a set of twins and two of a set of triplets dancing in this year’s “Nutcracker.” Jasmine and Kalea Harrison, juniors at Notre Dame Academy High School, and Francisca and Isabella Bugacov, freshmen at New West Charter High School, all expressed how eager they were to be back on The Broad Stage.

Jasmine and Kalea, 17, who are triplets along with their brother, Derek, will be sharing the role of

the Snow Queen and Dew Drop.

Jasmine will also dance the part of Lead Mirliton and Kalea will perform in the Arabian Dance.

Francisca and Isabel, 14, share the role of Lead Chinese, Side Spanish, Side Mirliton, and the Snowflakes and Flowers Dance.

“This is our ninth time — we love ‘The Nutcracker,’” Jasmine said. “It’s one of the reasons we like ballet so much. Performing it is such a nice feeling, especially at The Broad Stage. The Broad Stage is such a fun place. With the stage lights and costumes, it’s all just very exciting and a change from our day-to-day ballet classes.”

Francisca said this is their fourth year doing the Nutcracker — counting the slimmed down version done last year during the height of the pandemic.

“It is so exciting to showcase the months of work we’ve done in the studio,” Francisca said.

“With the costumes, lights and audience, it’s very fulfilling.”

Jasmine said that while last year was fun, she is excited to have a bigger audience once again, to return to the dressing room and be back on the stage that they love. Kalea echoed the sentiment, saying that last year they had to perform for a very small audience — just parents and maybe a few siblings. She’s excited now to perform for a large audience.

“It makes you feel like a real dancer,” Francisca said. “The studio is an at-home feeling, whereas being on The Broad Stage makes you feel like a professional with the stage makeup and lights and marks on stage. It is much more serious.”

Isabel pointed out that last year they weren’t allowed to do the big group or core dances because of the need to be socially distant.

This year, they are once again doing a full production, which means the large numbers like Snow and Flowers.

“I’ve learned more,” Isabel said.

“I’ve learned how to be a reference space, how to stay in formation better. When you’re looking for the marks on stage, it comes with its challenges, but I’m excited to be back on the stage.”

The sisters both reflected on what the past couple years have been like since the cancellation of the spring dance show in 2020.

“As it seems the pandemic is finally lifting, I’m so grateful to be returning to the stage,” Kalea said. “There is nothing quite like the magic of performing for a big audience while allowing yourself to become transformed by the music. Dancing in Westside Ballet’s ‘Nutcracker’ for the past eight years has granted me valuable performance exposure, which has helped me grow in artistry and technique.”

“The last two years have been such an interesting experience in terms of navigating the pandemic,” Jasmine said. “We’ve had to take increased safety measures, which means we have to wear masks while dancing. But it’s actually been really fun – because we got to experience rehearsing many beautiful roles – just for the joy of it, and not actually for an audience. That was an interesting experience for all of us dancers, after many years of performing to a live

audience because it reinforced the mindset of giving 200 percent effort in any circumstance, whether there was a live audience or not.”

The Westside Ballet’s “Nutcracker” is Southern California’s longest-running production, an interpretation that is a close rendition of George Balanchine’s classical “Nutcracker” ballet. It was brought to Los Angeles in 1973 by Westside’s co-founder Yvonne Mounsey.

“Words cannot describe how thrilled we are to finally return to The Broad Stage, which has been our home stage since 2013,” Harley said. “There is truly nothing like sharing the exquisite artistry of our production and talent of our dancers with the greater Santa Monica community. Westside’s ‘Nutcracker’ has withstood the test of time, remaining a coveted tradition for our community and dancers for nearly five decades.”

Sisters support and help each other Kalea, Jasmine, Isabel and Francisca all express how much they like dancing with someone who literally shares their DNA, a dance partner that they know better than anyone else.

“I love dancing with my sister,” Kalea said. “We have similar musicality and dance styles. We build off each other.”

“I feel like I’m dancing better when I dance with Kalea,” Jasmine added. “I like to think we’re more in sync because we are twins. We feed off each other’s energy and our dancing styles. I feel like it makes us better dancers when we dance together.”

“I like dancing with Fran,” Isabel said. “Like when we’re both Side Mirliton. It is cool because we understand each other’s rhythm. We’re able to be more in sync. At home we watch each other dance and give each other corrections and help each other stretch. It’s nice to have someone at home who understands ballet.”

“We have a part where we are two sides in a trio,” Francisca said. “So when we do the mannerisms with each other, it looks mirrored. It’s a cooler effect.”

The younger twins both said that they help each other out at home and enjoy having someone to talk to about dancing and the specific issues that they struggle with.

“Living with Isabel, I can be very open if something didn’t work out in rehearsal or if

something just felt weird,” Francisca said. “I can really talk to Isabel. We both play instruments with the same teacher, so we share a musicality.”

“Practicing and dancing with Fran can get a little stressful,” Isabel said. “Being twins, there is that sense of comparison that is a little nerve-wracking, but we do feel very comfortable with each other.”

The comparison is something that Jasmine and Kalea talk about as well, though they feel it is more in their heads than anything that others do to them. Both said the teachers don’t refer to them as “the twins,” but as Jasmine and Kalea.

“I feel that sense of comparison in my head,” Jasmine said. “But over the years, it’s gotten better because we have developed different styles of dancing and the teachers correct us as individuals.

So even though I have that internal comparison, it is nice to be somewhere where I can have a different dancing experience.”

“Even though we have similar musicality and dance style, we have, over time, developed as individual dancers,” Kalea added.

“I like that the teachers correct us as individuals. I do feel like there is some internal comparison, but I don’t feel like I get that from the

This year’s production showcases several male cast members.

Three Santa Monica residents — Jesse Dean, Sawyer Jordan and Dylan Weinstein — perform the newly choreographed Russian dance that showcase their Olympic-level athleticism with high jumps and perfected ballet form.

“The Russian dance has always been an audience favorite,” Harley said. “We are so proud of our advanced young male cast members, who train tirelessly — over 25-plus hours a week — and have mastered the exuberant Russian dance to a level usually reserved for one professional guest soloist.”

The production also brings in several guest dancers including Chasen Greenwood as the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Cavalier. Greenwood trained on a full scholarship with Pacific Northwest Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Houston Ballet and Ballet Austin.

Westside Ballet also welcomes back resident guest artists Evan Swenson, Mark Anthony Lopez and Sven Toorvad. All dancers and audience members above age 12 must show vaccination certificates. Those below the age of 12 or with medical exceptions must show a negative PCR test.

Masks will be required for all audience members and unvaccinated dancers.

Artist Jason Hill celebrates new anthology with book release and signing party

Tashman said the company spent a lot of time during COVID working on product development, with plans to expand beyond just longboarding.

“We made a snowboard and can hopefully continue to do that, but we’re also potentially expanding into balanced sports

medical wellness products,” Tashman said. “This has really challenged us to continue to build stuff that we love and to expand that into ways that are going to be healthy in a changing environment.”

Don Tashman is president and CEO of Loaded Boards and met the founders of Carver, Greg Falk and Neil Carver, through surfing. Over the pandemic, Carver approached Tashman and proposed a collaboration collection.

“We went for something that had a surfy vibe,” Tashman said. “​​I’ve always liked his stuff and we are voted for a high performance-composite skateboard. So I was trying to kind of create innovative and performance driven products and also very much focused on building community and worldwide.”

the plate underneath the board connecting it to the wheels. The board itself has a “rocker” profile with flared wheel wells and a deck to create more leverage while turning on the board.

“I think all three of us have a very eclectic vibe in terms of how we approach things,” Tashman said. “We designed the board around their trucks while using our wheels.”

Tashman grew up in Los Angeles, where his mother, who had been skateboarding since she was four, always had a skateboard somewhere around the house. Tashman said that as he got older skateboarding influenced the way he dressed and styled himself.

“I wouldn’t say I was extremely proficient, but I just always loved it,” Tashman said.

In the early ‘90s, Tashman tried skiing and snowboarding for the first time and fell in love with these sports as well. When he started college in New York City, he started building

skateboards that emulated what it was like to ride a snowboard.

But he didn’t think about turning skateboard building into a career until a few years later when he moved back to LA and started working part time at his father’s clothing company.

“He said ‘I’ll give you the space to start your own thing’ so I started my skateboard clothing company,” Tashman said.

Tashman realized the fashion business was not for him after about six months and realized he was more passionate about functionally driven longboard designs instead, which led to him starting Loaded Boards.

Loaded Boards quickly rose to become one of the most notable brands in longboarding over the past 20 years in business. Right before the pandemic hit, Loaded Boards was seeing an upswing in business that only seemed to keep rising until COVID shut things down.

For the first time ever, mortgage rates plunge as inflation soars Mortgage rates have not moved up even though inflation hit 6.2% last month, a three-decade high Contradiction? Kerfuffle? Chaos?

Freddie Mac’s 30-year fixed plunged 11 basis points to 2.98% this week, even as the nation’s inflation rate jumped to 6.2%.

When was the last time this happened?

Exactly never.

Traditionally, mortgage rates move up with inflation, says Richard Green, director of USC’s Lusk Center for Real Estate.

“This has happened at no other time in history,” Green said. “We are living in a world of uncertainty.”

The yield for the 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, or TIPS, was at an all-time low price of negative .57, Green observed. TIPS are indexed to inflation to protect investors from a decline in the purchasing power of their money, according to Investopedia.

This is the lowest Freddie’s rates have been since Sept. 23.

It’s important to note Freddie’s 30-year weekly rate survey was completed prior to the Labor Department’s Wednesday inflation announcement, and rates could bounce back up. For example, the 10-year Treasury rate

I’m a divorced guy in my 40s using dating apps. I’m keenly aware of what I do and don’t want in a woman and make it clear in my profile. For example, I write, “If you’re in a weird co-dependent relationship with a five-pound dog, we are not a match.” A friend looked at my profile and was all, “Man, you have to delete that.” I see no problem with what I’ve written. Who’s right?

— Constructive Honesty Admittedly, when people advise women, “Find a man who’s like a dog!” they mean like a big loyal-tothe-death black Lab, not a pursesized poodledoodle that spends a quarter of its life getting foofed up at Monsieur Marcel, the doggie hairdresser.

Of course, because a woman has a tiny ridiculous dog doesn’t mean she’s rife with psychological shortcomings. Including that bit in your profile – and especially as you worded it -- says a few things about you, none of them lady-magnetizing.

And sure, you wrote, “IF you are...” (in some sort of unhealthy relationship with your micro dog). However, even women who are emotionally together (and maybe even dogfree) are likely to swipe left or knock your profile into the little trash can icon.

Most problematically, this remark and other similarly cutting ones in your profile suggest you’re an angry guy: a big flashing skull-’n’-crossbones “STEER CLEAR!” for women. “Anger-prone individuals are volatile and frequently dangerous” – to the point of violence, evolutionary social psychologist Andrew Galperin and his colleagues explain. Women, on average, are smaller, physically weaker, and thus more physically vulnerable than men, which is likely why they err on the side of overperceiving signs that a guy might be a Mr. Angry. In fact, per the Galperin team’s research: “A single instance of angry behavior” in “new acquaintances” is enough to provoke this keepaway motive – even when their anger seems justified by the situation at hand!

Your sneering about behavior being “weird” and “co-dependent” is another red flag – suggesting you view life through puke-colored glasses and are quick to think the worst of total strangers. That’s Bigotry 101: using one infobit about an individual to leap to all sorts of ugly assumptions about them. It’s toxic, irrational, and unfair – and, if it’s your go-to thinking, perhaps something to work on changing, lest

you pay an unintended price (both in an ugly-first view of others and in others seeing you as a person to block, delete, and/or avoid).

By the way, “co-dependent” is an insulting term that’s in need of either retirement or scientific validation. It’s generally understood to describe two individuals in a persistent dysfunctional dance. The “enabling” individual temporarily eases the suffering of the other person (or pet!) – in ways that, in the long term, are harmful to both. “Co-dependence” was flung on the public by self-help authors – without any scientific basis: no evidence for the long lists of its supposed symptoms. It’s now promiscuously applied to shame people – to the point where showing none of the supposed symptoms gets used as proof of one’s co-dependence!

That said, you’re wise to try to proactively shoo off women who are wrong for you, as it could keep you from wasting your time and theirs on the phone (or worse, on a happy hour date that flies by like a week of medieval torture). However, there’s a way to tell the wrong women, “Yoohoo, move on!” without coming off scolding or demeaning (and in turn throwing out the babes with the bathwater).

Probably the best constructive yoohoo is subtle fact-stating, like mentioning you’re an atheist to discourage interest from those on Team God. Similarly, in the “Who am I?” portion on a dating app, a 40-something, Johnny Depp-alicious hottie of a guy posted, “Living a plant-based life,” suggesting he doesn’t just eat vegan; it’s major in his identity. If, like me, you are committed to “steak-based living,” you know to give a big sad pass to Mr. Pirates of the Cauliflower-ribbean.

It’s tempting to try to escape the emotional toddlers by announcing you’re seeking someone “psychologically healthy” or “emotionally solid.”

Probably pretty useless. Those who have an unhealthy relationship with their dog – or their mom, crystal meth or tennis – are often the last to know or admit it.

Ultimately, you might simply accept that you’ll likely end up on a date or two with women you’d do anything to avoid. Keep first dates casual – like meeting for coffee for an hour – and your disasters will at least be Hobbesian: nasty, brutish, and short. Finally, I must say – while typing this with my tiny, “My Little Pony”-like Chinese crested curled up asleep in my lap: Five pounds of dog may elicit laughs – till it’s cleanup time and you need a single sheet of Kleenex instead of a backhoe.

Preserving an Almost-Lost Narrative

Robin Center for Russian-Speaking Jewry will preserve history of Soviet Jewish experience

In Culver City, the Wende Museum is opening the Robin Center for Russian-Speaking Jewry in an effort to preserve the history of the Soviet Jewish experience, particularly those who applied for exit visas and subsequently faced discrimination or were disciplined when their visas were refused.

They became known as “Refuseniks” and they founded a movement of protest and culture that lasted from the 1970s to the early 1990s. Underwritten by Edward and Peggy Robin, two Wende Museum Board and Committee members, the Robin Center was started pre-pandemic and has been in the works since then. In addition to being a home for archival materials, the Center will offer ongoing programming to interact with the material.

The first exhibition related to the Center will be “Soviet Jewish Life: Bill Aron and Yevgeniy Fiks.” It will be on display from Nov. 14 through March 20. The Wende Museum focuses on collecting, preserving and providing access to a wide range of media having to do with socialism during the Cold War era (1945-1991). Also opening at the same time is an exhibition called “Questionable History.”

“I was involved in the Soviet Jewry, which was a major international, human rights movement,” said Edward Robin.

“A photographer friend of mine, Bill Aron, was an important figure because he went to Russia, then the Soviet Union, and took memorable photographs of refuseniks, the Jews who applied to emigrate and were refused permission and often lost their jobs.”

Creating the Robin Center Robin said they reached out to the Russian-speaking Jewish community in the U.S., Israel and Russia. In doing so, they discovered that there is a real interest in this history now that it is 30 years old. As they reached out, they had people start to donate materials that have never been seen in public before. These included things like a daily bulletin circulated among the

multi-year initiative and beyond that involves digitizing the archives and making them accessible for free online.

“Usually we exhibit and we move on,” Jampol said. “This is something different in that it is just the start of a long and more robust project that we’re going to be working on for the next many, many years.”

Opening exhibition features two artists

The Robin Center for Russian-Speaking Jewry will preserve the history of the Soviet Jewish experience and make it accessible to scholars as well as the general public with an emphasis on engagement with archival materials through artmaking workshops and educational activities. members of the protest movement, an underground newspaper, and pamphlets that the Soviet Jewry made to communicate with each other.

They hope in the future to do such activities as having someone come in to teach children and young adults how to create their own underground pamphlets and magazines.

“There is more coming in on a regular basis,” Robin said. “We know we have what has already become a world-class historical archive from that period from the participants — not just from American observers of what was going on. Much of it is for scholars, most of it is in Russian.

Some Russian-speaking academics have glanced at it and think it is a treasure trove.”

The Wende Museum, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, has always been interested in overlooked and underappreciated stories of people who experienced something in life that will resonate with others, said the museum’s founder.

“I certainly think right now with immigration and protests and opposition and dissidents — these are all of the things that this movement entailed,” said Justinian Jampol, executive director and founder of the museum. “The Wende is always trying to find the connective

tissue between the there and the here and the then and the now.”

Jampol pointed out that Russianspeaking Jews are an important community in LA that has been here for decades. He also acknowledges that the work the museum does isn’t always easy to digest. People can’t consume it in an hour and leave with selfies.

“Our mission is almost like an onion where you have to unpeel the layers,” Jampol said. “I think ultimately healing is deeply rewarding and memorable and important. Sometimes what that means in practice is that our exhibitions have to do a lot of informing and providing context as a way to engage people. We’re always trying to look for those on-ramps to the freeway for people, whether design or history or fashion or politics.”

Robin insisted that because of the topics and themes and the amount of time that has gone by, people are ready to re-engage in this part of history. Jampol said that upon releasing the news, they had immediate interest in the project.

“In almost 20 years, I don’t think there has been as much interest in any project that we’ve done as much as this one,” Jampol said. “It’s exactly what we should be doing.”

These projects will also be on display as part of the exhibit.

“As a result of Bill’s efforts, we were able to put a face on the people he advocated for. It added a human touch,” Robin said. “I referred him to Justin. They met and Bill became a fan of the museum.”

Jampol pointed out that it is one thing to talk about or read about a community in need, it is another to be able to see human faces and how people are suffering or responding to the realities around them. That, he says, is what Aron did with his photographs.

“What he captures is a real spirit of the sense of desire to express a cultural as well as a religious identity — which were both suppressed,” Jampol said. “They would have underground Hebrew lessons which were not allowed.

They would worship outside the synagogue and in people’s homes because there was a stigma attached and risk to being religious in the USSR. Bill captured these moments that give future generations the implicit message that they’re going to have to face this harsh reality without some kind of intervention or help.”

Exhibition questions history The other exhibition, “Question-

able History,” delves into symbols and what they have to say about history. It is designed to ask questions about the character of historical knowledge and the stories we tell about the past.

At the center of the exhibition is Vladimir Lenin and how his reputation and representation has evolved over time. There are presentations of historical lenses from such people as Friedrich Nietzsche, Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu. It also has contemporary work from modern artists who challenge the iconography surrounding Lenin.

Wende Museum focuses on its specialty The Wende Museum, which is underwritten by the Arcadia Fund, specializes in at-risk and endangered collections. Their funders are the Genesis Philanthropy Group.

“You can’t write histories about people where there is no evidence,” Jampol said. “It’s been a way that people have systemically been removed from historical records, by destroying evidence. It is why the team and myself are so passionate about what we do. If we weren’t there, a lot of these things would slip through our collective fingers and be lost forever.”

“This collection has been under beds and in closets at a time where representation is so important,” Jampol continued.

“The Soviet Jewry movement has only been told from the American side and while incredibly effective and successful — thank goodness for Ed and people like him — we also need the people who are the subject, the Russian Jews themselves, to tell their stories.

What is surprising is how little information has been preserved about their experience. It is an opportunity for the Wende to save the historical record and to make sure they have a voice.”
