Ballona Wetlands Ad Editor: I couldn’t help but notice the full back page ad in the 9/30/21 Argonaut, bought by “Defend Ballona Wetlands,” the latest of several “nonprofit” advocacy groups opposing the State Department of Fish and Wildlife’s extraordinary restoration plan for the Ballona Wetlands. The ad focuses first on the legitimate community issue of the Gas Company’s Playa del Rey storage facility, but then descends into absolutely false and misleading drivel about the state’s proposed wetland restoration project, which has no relation to the Gas Company operation except that it has already forced the utility to begin closing its wells located on state fish and wildlife property in advance of the wetlands restoration project.

“Defend” and other advocacy groups have sued the state of California (that’s all of us) claiming the wetland restoration project Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is faulty. The 1,000 page-plus EIR properly and factually evaluated 13 different restoration alternatives for Ballona using sound science, eliminating nine alternatives and advocating for the most comprehensive restoration plan. Those eliminated plans did not meet our state’s goals, enshrined in law, to restore our tidelands to their maximum ecological productivity. Over a dozen credible environmental organizations, including Heal the Bay, Surfrider Foundation, and Friends of Ballona Wetlands have endorsed the EIR.

The state’s preferred plan will create, enhance and restore highly productive wetland habitats across the 600-acre ecological reserve, in large part by digging out the 200 acres of unproductive, weedinfested fill dirt dumped south of Fiji Way 60 years ago during the Marina’s construction. Most all of this fill, which buried productive wetland, will be repurposed by the project into modern vegetated flood control infrastructure protecting lower Playa del Rey, and will also support 10 miles of new bike trails and footpaths around the perimeters of the reserve. The new infrastructure will eliminate the ancient, obsolete concrete banks of Ballona Creek within the reserve boundaries and allow ocean tides to flow freely back to their pre-Marina limits, including the lands formerly buried.

The strategy of “Defend” and the other advocacy groups suing California is not designed to force a major change in the proposed project, as the plaintiffs know full well that at most, their litigation might force a minor revision and strengthening of the EIR. The project will then move forward, as it should, but will unfortunately have been delayed another two to three years by this meaningless litigation, which will cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars that could be spent on the project itself, including legal expenses demanded by the litigants.

Playa Vista Re: My take on the MVCC Editor: I was a member of the Mar Vista for All Slate in the most recent Mar Vista Community Council election, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw a letter to the editor from Elliot Hanna, former chairman of the MVCC. Leaving aside the fact that Mr. Hanna either continues to misrepresent our slate’s positions on multiple issues or simply never understood them, I find it odd that Mr. Hanna states both that he was shocked by Chairperson Wheeler’s Stalinesque purge of all community members from committee leadership and that he is a model of inclusivity.

First, in the most recent election, Mr. Hanna as chairman did not take any action to enact removal or force recusal from the MVCC Outreach Committee of members standing for election. If you’re not familiar with the Outreach Committee, they are a bridge between the MVCC and the

community at large. Members of the committee have access to contact information for hundreds, if not thousands, of MVCC stakeholders.

Sitting on this committee while simultaneously running for a position on the MVCC is akin to working in the elections division of the city while running for a council seat. Even if no impropriety exists, it creates the image of impropriety, and anyone with a working moral compass would recuse themselves from this committee when running for re-election.

The chair of this committee at the time was Ms. Wheeler who, when asked to recuse herself from the committee until the election was over by members of our slate, stated that the committee could not function without her. This should have been Mr. Hanna’s first clue that he was backing Pol Pot in a sun hat. It didn’t bother the chairman at the time, but now we are made to believe that Ms. Wheeler’s most recent autocratic actions sent his mind reeling.

Second, while it is true that Mr. Hanna made an effort to include opposing voices on the MVCC, he is also the very same Mr. Hanna that sent unhinged, ranting emails

to losing candidates in the most recent election telling them that they wasted everyone’s time and shouldn’t have bothered to run.

For Mr. Hanna to now behave as if Ms. Wheeler’s silencing of alternative viewpoints has somehow offended his sensibilities is strange to say the least.

Finally, given that Mr. Hanna accused our slate of not understanding what a community council does, I wonder if Mr. Hanna in his next letter would be so kind as to address Ms. Wheeler’s recent assertion that the MVCC has no right to debate the legality of anything brought before them and that their sole purpose is to pass stakeholder opinion up to the city council.

However, if Mr. Hanna would like to comment on another aspect of Ms. Wheeler’s deranged despotic regime that he successfully midwifed (the dozens of Brown Act violations to which the city has taken a hands-off approach, the hijacking of committee meetings so that Chairperson Wheeler is the defacto chair for most meetings, the secret stakeholder votes that only she has the tallies for that always align with her opinion, the refusal to conduct certain MVCC

These “groups” are not what I know to be legitimate, board- and policy-governed, professionally staffed nonprofit organizations, but rather single individuals masquerading as a “group.” These individuals tap into the generosity of caring but guileless citizens persuaded to donate cold, hard cash to their “cause,” under a phony promise to stop their phony threat of state-sponsored wildlife mass murder.

In the 18 years and counting that the Ballona project has been discussed, debated and planned in the public forum, none of these groups, to my knowledge, has ever spent a cent of their charitable donations on expert scientific testimony from credentialed and published professionals in any field of wetland restoration science. Instead, I presume they spend the money on food, clothing, transportation and shelter, just like the rest of us that work a job. Even their lawyers likely work pro bono on the promise of taxpayer-funded reimbursement.

How to handle grief over loving and losing a beloved pet

By Brandon Wainwright s any pet parent will tell you, the joy, love and comfort that comes with adopting an animal companion is a blessing rivaled by few experiences life has to offer. What they’ll also tell you is that losing an animal companion can be more emotionally devastating than just about any of life’s many adversities.

After experiencing such loss, it takes some pet lovers many years, if ever, before they are willing to open their hearts up to another fur (or feather, etc.) baby. For though they know they will be signing up for much joy, they also know they will be signing up for much pain. This is the unavoidable reality of loving a pet. The beautiful struggle.

I’ve always been a dog lover, but our beloved chihuahua/ dachshund mix, Tyson, was my soulmate. He had a richness of spirit that could best be de-

scribed as “old soul.” He loved with a warm depth that was somehow wise, tough and vulnerable all at once. Losing Tyson in April 2018 was one of the most emotionally painful experiences of my life, but it was also one of incredible spiritual growth.

In my search for healing, I’ve discovered a few things along my path that I would like to pass along to anybody that is grieving over a dearly departed pet.

• Don’t buy into the mistaken idea that intense grieving over a pet is weird or inappropriate. Our relationships with our animal friends, though different from those with our human friends, are nonetheless very significant and impactful, sometimes even more so. The love we feel for another being is not determined by species, but rather by how our souls mesh.

We must be gentle with our-

selves and understand that our grief reflects our love – and there is nothing weird or inappropriate about that.

• Don’t adopt another animal during your grieving process. For many, the natural compulsion when we are coping with the loss of a fur baby is to try and alleviate the pain by adopting another pet. The problem is, it is impossible to replace that magic with another pet. This isn’t dissimilar to the let-down that invariably comes from a “rebound relationship” after a breakup. The new pet simply can’t live up to our expectations, and we end up feeling dissatisfied. Worse, our healthy healing process is often hindered. This is unfair to both the pet and to us. Instead, spend time with a friend’s pet. Perhaps offer pet-sitting services or even foster a pet awaiting their forever

• Don’t minimize the significance of your healing process, but rather open your mind, heart and spirit to new experiences. For example, Reiki, which is a Japanese form of spiritual energy, offers amazing healing from not only physical ailments, but also mental, emotional and spiritual difficulties. I discovered Reiki during my grieving process. I have since become a Reiki master and animal Reiki practitioner. It has definitely changed my life for the better.

• Realize that though your pet has crossed the rainbow bridge, their soul is still very much alive and connected to you. Consider sitting quietly and, in your mind and heart, simply reach out to them. You’ll likely be very comforted by the beautiful love

and peace you receive in return. You might also consider utilizing the services of an animal communicator to deliver messages to, and receive messages from, your pet. For some, this may sound far-fetched, but believe me when I say that animal communication is very real. It has the potential to facilitate great healing.

• With the intense loss we feel when a beloved pet transitions, it can feel like a tragedy. The “tragedy” is only one of perspective. Rejoice knowing that you loved your pet and helped them learn their life lessons – and they did the same for you. Find comfort and peace knowing that you provided them with love and friendship in a way that only you could – and they absolutely did the same for you. This makes their lives a wonderful success and anything but tragic!

The thing is, our pets are more than just our friends, companions and protectors. They provide friendship, companion-

HOUSINGMV helps the unhoused while improving community health and safety

By Nicole Borgenicht n December 2020, Rich Hirschkoff founded HOUSINGMV: Mar Vista Task Force on Homelessness, a nonprofit organization (pending status) that is dedicated to helping the homeless in Mar Vista by providing services and housing support while increasing community health and safety.

“I was tired of the grief, anger and resentment being expressed about the homeless without solutions,” Hirschkoff said.

“Getting angry doesn’t solve the problem. I figured getting out and doing something about it might help lead to solutions.

That led me to look to colleagues and friends to form HOUSINGMV.” HOUSINGMV treasurer and CFO Robin Doyno has also formed two other nonprofits, Gratitude Retreat Foundation (a 12-step men’s recovery home) and West Mar Vista Neighborhood Association. Board secretary/digital media director Deb Longua-Zamero is one of the founders of Soaring with Love Family Foundation, a charitable organization founded by families with children in the entertainment industry with the goal of helping families in need.

HOUSINGMV’s outreach program provides a range of support services that include supplying people with food, clothing and other necessities.

“HOUSINGMV’s Outreach Table on Tuesdays and Thursdays is an example of offering what we can right now, which begins relationships that will ease the work of an outreach worker from one of the agencies that can offer housing and make life a bit less burdensome for the unhoused.”

In coordinating with housing agencies, HOUSINGMV also provides contact information to homeless people so that they can reach out for any services needed from PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), St. Joseph Center, SHARE! (the Self-Help and Recovery Exchange) and Disability Community Resource Center.

“We are providing resources

to the unhoused in the interim,” said Martha Davis, member on-boarding director. “Getting to know each person allows us to point them in the right direction. That is a huge piece of this.”

Research & prevention director Godafrin Dastur shared that HOUSINGMV is also creating intake forms and surveys for the unhoused so that they can better serve them.

“We are a fairly new organization and have not housed anyone at this point; however, we do refer people to St. Joseph, The People Concern, and Housing Works for the time being,” Longua-Zamero said.

supports current programs like Housing Now. Councilmembers Ridley-Thomas and Mike Bonin motioned to establish the “Housing Now” Fund, which encompasses permanent supportive housing, bridge temporary housing and safe camping.

“We are in full support of the ‘Housing Now’ program proposed by Mark RidleyThomas with support of Mike Bonin and other like-minded officials trying to help the homeless crisis,” Hirschkoff said. “’Housing Now’ has the city, state and federal government working together to providing housing and services now. If everyone approves it, then money will flow to the right channels, and we can start

to see real change in the community.”

Generating interest from the homeless population to moving indoors takes special skills.

Helping people with everyday needs and guidance is a different process than the actual decision to move off the street.

“Someday when we have enough funds to hire professional outreach workers, we hope to get people housed, and offer financial assistance for first and last month’s rent to get the unhoused started on the right path,” Hirschkoff said.

“That will require a lot of fundraising on our part.”

Another beneficial organization is Housing First, which houses people first then supplies services. This is effective in moving people into short-term or permanent housing quickly without a laundry list of stipulations.

“Most programs have specific requirements and eligibility standards which create a high barrier for most to access,” said Sarah Fay, outreach education homeless advocate. “Housing First eliminates the barriers and is based on a person-centered and by-choice basis. Services should never be forced; rather a plethora of suitable options that fits each person’s needs.

Everybody has a very unique and different story; many of which are not a result of drugs or mental illness.”

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), the energy flow called Qi is an abstract mechanism of action that is known to have an important role in the pathways that allow the human body to self-regulate.”

Guiyab added, “Studies have shown that acupuncture points affect the central nervous system, increases circulation of the blood, and allows the body to heal itself naturally by releasing brain chemicals. An array of ailments such as musculoskeletal and joint pain,

addiction, asthma, nausea, female and male reproductive system issues, mental health problems and more can be effectively treated by acupuncture as a standalone or in combination with conventional medicine.”

In short, acupuncture balances the flow of Qi, improving one’s health. In addition to treating physical pain, it’s also used for mental health improvement, as 40 to 50% of Guiyab’s patients see her for that sole reason.

“Environmental toxicity, high stress and bad diet are major culprits leading to chronic diseases,” Guiyab said. “This is an obstruction in the body so we treat it by attaining a balanced circulation of flow of energy called Qi. In addition, acupuncture has an effect on the neurotransmitters that secrete hormones such as dopamine and serotonin, which allows the body to start to heal.”

Aspects of TCM like acupuncture and cupping have been proven to reduce pain and improve well-being in studies conducted by the National Institute of Health. Guiyab is well-educated and experienced in TCM. After coming to America from the Philippines at the age of 12, she completed her bachelor’s degree in health and wellness, then pursued her master’s and doctorate degrees in acupuncture and Chinese medicine at Pacific College of Health and Science.

Santa Monica firm receives multiple design honors for affordable housing project

The fullservice architecture firm in Santa Monica has also designed pro bono for homeless students in a partnership with UCLA and worked with Santa Monica-based nonprofit Community Corporation of Santa Monica to improve affordable housing lifestyles.

The firm was founded in 1983 by Michael W. Folonis, who is also a resident of Santa Monica. Serving on the Architectural Review Board (past chair) and a board member of Santa Monica Conservancy, Folonis has often addressed the need for affordable housing. He is also a current board member of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

“I’m also a Vietnam vet and am currently looking to partner with organizations that address homelessness among veterans,” Folonis said.

The firm’s Millennium East Village project in Santa Monica is a series of modern structures that balance smart architecture with affordable living. It was transformed from an abandoned mobile home park into a community-oriented, five-story, 362-unit mixed-use complex with affordable housing.

Millennium East Village has garnered multiple recent design awards including a Westside Urban Forum Design Award, it was honored in the Multi-Residential (50+) category at the 2021 AIA Residential Design Awards, and it was named a Multi-Family winner at the 2021 AIA San Fernando Design Valley Awards.

“For Millennium East Village, we wanted to design something more community and neighborhood oriented than a monolithic box, which is an easy and uninspired housing solution,” Folonis said. “Our firm created four interlocking elements to make the 362-unit complex more open, accessible and inviting — to residents as well as to the neighborhood.”

The multi-complex design utilizes solar for outdoor spaces, and windows leading indoors are oriented for solar energy and certified LEED with forthcoming, increased energy efficiency.

The ground floor is designed for retail businesses such as a cafe, grocers and drycleaners. Additional amenities for residents include a pool, club house, gym, communal gardens, barbecue areas and outdoor play areas for children.

Millennium East Village supports three tiers of a new wave in development.

Tenants that seek affordable living are one tier, retail businesses that want built-in clientele without being zoned are the second tier, and landlords that require reliable tenants are the third tier. Furthermore, enhancing the neighborhood with safe and affordable living and public spaces that engage new customers improves the quality of life for everyone.

“With more people working from home and the demand for commercial office space theoretically decreasing, rezoning commercial properties to include residential could be a solution for increasing affordable housing in the LA area,” Folonis said.

While others were sulking or trying to fill their time during the quarantine, Bijou got down to business. He started an online music academy and brainstormed a clothing line called MTS, which introduced the first T-shirt last month.

Following a year of studio grind, coupled with the release of his album “Diamond City,” the man otherwise known as Ben Dorman created the EP “Street Knowledge.” The collection combines a rhythmic bass with guests like Rick Hyde, Tony Watts, Youngworld, Chase Fetti and ElCamino.

“The lead record and title track are about a year and a half old now,” Dorman said. “We had different release plans for it in the past that fell through. We thought we would just sit on this and wait until it falls into place naturally.”

With “Code Blue,” “Rockstar” and “Curses” already streaming, the introspective project has already amassed hundreds of thousands of plays on Spotify.

“Street Knowledge” is Bijou’s second EP of the year following “187 Proof.”

The guests are primarily based in Buffalo. He focused on B-Lo in honor of his father, who grew up an hour outside of the city.

“It’s another piece of me and an extension of me not only personally but musically,” Dorman said. “The album came together during COVID. I wasn’t traveling at the time, but I was going around the country meeting rappers, going in the studio, figuring out what works best conceptually for the track listing. If you break down ‘Street Knowledge’ and where it comes from, it’s about someone who has grown up and learned a lot of things that happened in the streets.”

He’s not saying he grew up in the streets, but he has a “strong idea” about it and has experienced the activities in some sense.

“I wanted to work with guys who also come from that type of thing and can understand it. In a lot of ways, I wanted to take it back to my roots. I’ve done the Phoenix thing with ‘Diamond City.’ That’s where I’m really from. ‘Street Knowledge’ is unequivocally every piece of

The fun cover art, which shows Dorman and his guest artists sitting in a classroom, was created by Phoenix artist Antoinette Cauley.

“I discovered her a couple years ago,” Dorman said.

“We’ve become friends over time. We spoke and she wanted to do cover art for me. We just needed to find the right project.

We went over it and it took about six to eight weeks from start to finish. She’s sending me the actual canvas so I can get it framed. It’s pretty amazing.”

A ‘hip-hop head’ An Arizona native, Dorman grew up in Tempe, Arizona, near Arizona State University.

A fan of Roberto Clemente, Dorman was passionate about baseball as a teen. Left handed, Dorman didn’t find many positions he could play. He opted for pitcher and right fielder.

From there, he played ball at community colleges, Northwestern Oklahoma State and Missouri Baptist, the latter of which he said had a “great

program and it was a blast.”

After playing indie pro ball in Scottsdale, he hung up his cleats to pursue music.

“The summer of 2013, I was finally like, ‘I don’t love this anymore,’” he recalled. “My last game was my only professional win. I got a job at Jersey Mike’s and basically told myself I would do that as long as I had to.

“A year and a half later, I had the opportunity to produce Kevin Federline, and that was interesting. He’s a super nice guy. It took me to a different realm. I went between Phoenix and LA for eight months.”

Thanks to his talent and his management at Relentless Beats, Dorman has made a name for himself in G-house, which fuses elements of house and rap.

Before the pandemic, he was slated to head out on a major world tour. Instead, he’s promoting “Diamond City” with merchandise and a possible deluxe album. He’s continuing to promote the collabs on the album.

“I’m a huge hip-hop head, and some of my favorite rappers are on here. I’m a massive Denzel

Curry fan, and I was fanboying over him. I met him through Instagram. He said, ‘What’s up?’ and I said, ‘Oh (crap).

Denzel’s talking to me.’ Chetta, I discovered just very organically through his association with $uicideboy$. Willie Northpole is an Arizona legend.

He performed with G-Unit and had that hit ‘Body Marked Up.’” And Bijou has more tricks up his sleeve.

“I want to give people something to do to get out of their house,” he said coyly. “It’s not going to conflict with the pandemic restrictions or cause any problems. You have to get creative these days or else things flop. I have faith in my work, though.”

Casper Brindle’s new art series is on display at William Turner Gallery

By Bridgette M. Redman asper Brindle is convinced that he’s putting out some of his best work yet in his latest exhibition at William Turner Gallery in Santa Monica.

The artist, who began painting in the 1980s and is a disciple of the Light and Space art movement in Los Angeles, has woven a Southern California influence through all his work, whether the hot rod and surf culture found in his earlier work or the pure light in his latest exhibition.

“I think the light in LA is different than anywhere else in the world,” Brindle said. “This will be my best show yet. I’m really proud of this show.”

The show is called “Light | Glyphs” and will be on display through November 5. The series contains 25 pieces of which 15 will be shown at William Turner Gallery.

“Light is a huge part of my work in general and especially this body of work,” Brindle said. “I would say it is as important as the materials that I use, even more so. These works came to fruition just playing with light and seeing what happens with other materials. I started with light itself and manipulated the materials to do different things and bring different energies.”

Brindle, who was born in Toronto, moved to LA when he was 6 years old in the mid1970s and he has lived there ever since. He was an apprentice to the Light and Space pioneer Eric Orr. He has exhibited on a regular basis at William Turner Gallery for more than 10 years and this is his 7th solo exhibition with the gallery.

A surfer, Brindle is constantly observing the play of light on water and how it expresses itself with color. Many of the works were done during the COVID lockdowns, something that Brindle said worked out to be a great thing for a lot of artists.

“Everything went on the backburner,” Brindle said. “You didn’t have to follow deadlines.

that you can’t do when you have commitments and things like that.”

To create the works in this exhibit, Brindle used automotive paints, pigmented acrylic and metal leaf. The final works are 3 feet by 3 feet by 4 inches.

He used translucent sculptural boxes which he air painted with diffused colors through the frosted surfaces.

The light in the colored background reflects in a quietly dramatic manner. In the center of each piece is a glyph, inspired by hieroglyphs that were ancient modes of communication, where symbols or marks were carved in relief to convey ideas.

Brindle’s glyph is a threedimensional rectangle that intersects the center of the translucent box. The glyphs have been described as a beacon cutting through fog – quietly dramatic.

“I’m fascinated with hieroglyphs and how they used them to communicate,” Brindle said.

“I use that as kind of a vehicle to do this newer work with glyphs. They go back awhile in the paintings. There is just something that a spirit bigger than us is speaking to us. When I look at just a single glyph, it is speaking to that bigger power. I found that fascinating to use in the work.”

With Brindle’s use of gold and silver leaf to create the glyphs, he feels they really lend themselves to telling a story and he wanted to further the investigation into glyphs with these paintings.

Two different processes went into creating the works in this exhibit. With the glyphs, he did a lot of preparation, research and models. The decision-making process was very conscious as from the start he had an idea of where he wanted to go with them.

The paintings, on the other hand, had a more Zen approach.

Brindle would find himself in a meditative state, a state of calmness where he let the work take over.

“It is a meditative state where all of a sudden at the end of the day, you’re like, ‘What just happened?’” Brindle said. “It’s that kind of thing when you’re

That’s the same feeling I get when I make the works. The day starts and then it is 8 p.m. and I’ve got to go home.”

Brindle said he doesn’t typically have a preconceived idea of what he is going to do with the paintings. He lets them paint themselves.

“It’s a constant trance-like state of making right and wrong decisions along the way,” Brindle said. “I don’t say I’m going to do a blue painting. I just start and make a number of decisions along the way and just kind of paint these paintings.”

Throughout the years and with individual paintings, his choice of materials has always changed and shifted, evolving until he gets to where he is now.

“That’s part of the process,” Brindle said. “The best part about making art is the process.

Things are changing all the time until you get to a place where you are like, now I have it. I know what this is about.”

The trance-like state is one

that he shares with those that experience his work. Brindle said he’s had a lot of reactions to his art, but the most common one is a sense of lightness and calm — a sense of their bodies decompressing and entering a meditative state.

He stressed the importance of seeing his three-dimensional work in person. It’s the only way to experience its depth and the way the light shimmers and moves. The large paintings shift as a person walks by them, inviting viewers to pause, to explore perception.

This is Brindle’s first major show since the pandemic delayed an earlier showing at the William Turner Gallery in 2020. He invites patrons to come and lose themselves in his meditative works, to let art minister to their hungry souls.”

ROSEGALLERY showcases Godeleine de Rosamel’s inventive ceramic creations

By Nicole Borgenicht ittle objects come to life in the world of French artist Godeleine de Rosamel. De Rosamel begins with ebauche, which means “a sketch” in French. In addition to sketching, de Rosamel often experiments with her ceramic pieces combining wood, rock and metal in unlikely places as first steps.

The finished figures may have a log running sideways out of a creature or odd shaped rocks piled up on its head. A mini tree with semi-circle shapes for leaves is complementary with the animal beside it that appears to grow similar ridges popping out like hair or armor.

De Rosamel utilizes symmetry in shapes and ideas, but never stops at too silly an idea. She said planning is not always the answer.

“Fun just comes out by consequence,” De Rosamel said.

“I’m very happy people respond.”

And respond they do – ROSEGALLERY at Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica works with de Rosamel to keep her art in stock.

“Each collection of sculptures does have a limited time frame in the gallery,” said Sophi Winnikoff, associate director of ROSEGALLERY. “Godeleine has some dedicated collectors, all of which are excited to see her newest work. Her work is also widely known. While it’s impossible to pinpoint the schedule, the sales of her work are often a mix of returning clients and new individuals who happen upon her installation at the gallery like you did. It’s difficult to walk in the gallery, see her work and not want to take one of these small ceramic friends, home with you.”

A few intriguing elements characterize the inventive world of de Rosamel. For instance, the creatures are neither male nor female. Maintaining her freedom, the artist does not feel the creatures or their vegetation needs to be bound by human characteristics or the world in which we live. The creative forms live in what de Rosamel described as a “magical habitat.”

While all the creatures seem to live in the same world, they have their own lives. This allows clients to have specific connections with the individual sets. While theoretically they may appear similar, truly each is individual.”

The clay pieces and glazes are fired in kilns and de Rosamel is experimenting with glazes. Her glazes are either slick or multi-toned, not all with an even overlay but each one maintains a natural feeling. The life forms are balanced whether leaning or straight up with the demeanor of assuredness. Her fantasy creatures have a sense of outright confidence and existence.

At present, de Rosamel is building pieces as large as 20 inches tall. The larger pieces will be presented at ROSEGALLERY sometime in mid-2022.

I love my boyfriend. We’ve been together two years. Recently, however, we’ve been experiencing conflict over the issue of children.

He wants kids; I don’t. I’ve always felt strongly about this, and he said he was fine with this when we started dating. But he’s been bringing up the subject of kids a lot lately (I suspect because he’s thinking about popping the question). The discussions have grown fraught -- to the point where he was in tears at the end of an argument. I eventually said I could be open to kids because I love him and don’t want to lose him. But can this be healthy for us long-term?

Though many things in life come with the opportunity to push the “back” button, once you have a kid, you have a kid. You can’t just drop ‘em off at the fire station if they turn out to be precociously criminal – already hot-wiring cars at age seven.

Deciding whether to have kids is a very recent state of affairs, coinciding with the development and availability of reliable birth control (starting in the late 1950s with the Lippes Loop IUD). For most of human history, unless a woman spent her fertile years all alone on one of those New Yorker cartoon desert islands, there was a good chance she’d have not just a child but the beginnings of a litter.

There’s a widespread (and mistaken!) assumption that a woman who gives birth will immediately and unconditionally bond with her baby, explains anthropologist and primatologist Sarah Hrdy. Probably because of this, many people seem to believe the only thing stopping any woman from wanting a child is having yet to bring one into existence.

In fact, neither humans nor other mammals “automatically nurture each baby born,” Hrdy observes. Clinical psychologist Idun Roseth and her colleagues, reviewing research on mother-infant bonding issues, report: “Most mothers find that feelings of affection come within a week from birth. However, some mothers are still struggling with this after many months. ... A small percentage may even have hostile feelings towards their infant.”

In other words, the public has an overly rosy, sentimental – and scientifically incorrect – view of what’s often referred to as the “maternal instinct.” There is no such thing – and the term “instinct” is the problem.

The actual scientific definition of an instinct is an innate behavior (“factory-installed” – present at birth rather

than learned afterward) that members of a species perform automatically.

An example is a baby’s crying – alerting everybody in earshot, “YO! I HAVE UNMET NEEDS!” (Nobody has to send their baby to crying school. It automatically wails its little head off when it’s wet, scared, cold, or wants a sip o’ nippy.)

In contrast with automatic instinctual behavior, there’s behavior that’s learned as well as behavior that is only sometimes triggered in some members of a species. Accordingly, the misnamed “maternal instinct” would be better termed a maternal impulse or motivation.

The impulse to nurture one’s infant is just one motivation that may arise in a woman. Hrdy has long emphasized that ambivalence and even rejection of an infant are other impulses a new mother may feel. (Unfortunately, the myth of instantly falling in love with one’s infant is so pervasive and strong that women who don’t experience this tend to feel there’s something wrong with them.) In reality, “maternal commitment” tends to emerge “piecemeal,” Hrdy explains, and is “chronically sensitive to external cues.”

By “external cues,” she means a woman’s current context – such as whether she’s unable to adequately feed and protect her infant. War, famine, postpartum depression or even a new partner who doesn’t want another man’s child are contexts that may even trigger infanticide: a horrifying maternal impulse but a maternal impulse just the same.

Thankfully, this impulse is relatively rare in our society, and many women (and men!) report “falling in love” with a child they never planned to have.

Maybe...possibly...you’d become one of those “in-love” women and be wildly happy you’d had children.

However, in your email, you repeatedly made it clear that you don’t want kids. You are only considering it because you love this man and don’t want to lose him – which is quite different from wanting children.

You might ask friends who are parents to an infant and other young kids to let you spend a long weekend with them. Admittedly, this isn’t the same as parenting your own kids, but it might give you a sense of whether you’re actually up for the job – or whether you’re like me. Personally, though I have great respect for devoted, loving parents, if I were in charge of a thing that screams like it’s being eaten alive by a zombie, it would take about 20 minutes before there was grain alcohol in my coffee – and in someone’s sippy cup.

I find this question to be more and more critical to my clients. I have found the evolution of buyer expectations for properties in pristine and fully remodeled condition to be fascinating.

Having worked in this industry for more than 25 years, I’ve witnessed the real estate market through some of its best and worst of times. While the “Baby Boomer” generation has been the one to historically have had the most significant impact on real estate, each generation has brought their own take to what it means to be a property owner.

Well, not so fast. Gen-Xers have already had their families and settled in. Let me introduce you to the next generation- the Millenials. We all have known for years that Millenials have high expectations for employment and have been known for their willingness to live at home longer if it means not having to compromise for jobs that don’t meet their needs. They bring this same take no compromise agenda to the real estate market. They want what they want and they will not settle. Millenials are the first generation to know Airbnb- they travel and seek accomodations that are exquisitely furnished and cater to their needs.

They expect no less for their homes.

These buyers want the best- completely remodeled homes, often requesting the furnishings, as well. They don’t want to hear about potential- they don’t want to have to do anything but bring their suitcases and live their best life. I kind of admire this about them. They are willing to pay for this privilege, often paying prices that exceed appraised value.

These buyers are not paying less for homes that need a little update- they just aren’t buying them. They would rather wait and fight over the ones that are finished. Give it a second thought- and consider the reward for taking the road a little less traveled.
