Voting Rights Is Our Priority Editor: In 2021, we have seen far too many attacks on our right to vote. I’m sure many of us heard about the law in Georgia that made it illegal to give voters water while they’re waiting in line to vote. Well, for every voter suppression law we did hear about, there are 20 more we didn’t. So far this year, 17 states enacted 28 new laws that make it more difficult for eligible Americans to cast their ballots, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

The only answer to this crisis is a response from the federal government. We need lawmakers in Congress to pass legislation that will create national standards to safeguard our right to vote as soon as possible.

There are already two bills in the mix that, if passed, would go a long way to securing our freedom to vote. The first is the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the second is the For the People Act. Congress has everything it needs to pass sweeping voting rights protection with these pieces of legislation. I am asking them not to squander it or let the filibuster get in the way.

Ken Schwarz Re: Response to the Homeless Last Week Editor: Thank you very much for publishing my letter on July 1, 2021, but the “corrections” to it by both Jack Schwartz and Angus MacDonald misrepresented my letter.

Mr. Schwartz claimed that he “did not promote building private housing for the homeless,” while in his original letter he wrote “So, if you want to help, support housing groups like Venice Community Housing Corp, who are actually building these projects to house people.”

He also repeated that it is “unconstitutional to decree mandatory destination housing for the homeless,” although he has yet to cite the Article, Section and Clause in the Constitution (or the amendment) that this violates. I didn’t realize that our Founding Fathers had a significant homeless crisis to deal with back then, or for that matter polluted, public, modern cities and waterways. If one is going to reference the Constitution, then it is important

to be specific.

National Parks, public schools, NASA, Medicare, Social Security, and the EPA, to name just a few, are not in the Constitution either, so does that make them unconstitutional? The Constitution, as demonstrated by the aforementioned and the 27 amendments, is a living document, which must keep up with our ever-changing world.

He also stated that “Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia were prime examples of ‘majority rule’, as is modern-day China,” but all three of these examples were or are authoritarian regimes that did not and do not represent the majority, which is determined by free and fair elections. It is irresponsible to compare our republic with an authoritarian country — our government is elected, it controls no private businesses, has no wealth, only brings in 16% of the GDP in revenue, which it spends right back into the economy, and it only owns 28% of the land, most of which consists of National Parks, military bases and our borders.

We are nowhere close to becoming an authoritarian socialist or communist country. If anything, we are a feudalist one,

It’s all is about keeping their jobs and the money flowing these “nonprofits” groups have no accountability to the residents!

Let’s see the payroll from these “outreach” groups, let’s review the cost of the new VCHC building, a “must” on Rose Avenue, that skirted the law and changed the rules? Let’s review what all these “nonprofits” actually do and the numbers on getting people into housing.

Obviously, they never did much at the Venice Boardwalk.

Why must our families no longer be able to enjoy our public areas? The homeless have taken over the parks, sidewalks, beaches and alleyways. It is no longer safe nor healthy.

Time to do some deep diving into why the homeless have increased tenfold and why the city keeps profiting off their situation.

We can only hope the city changes the law back to making it illegal to sleep on the streets, parks, beaches, in your car or in front of businesses.

Stop the handouts that aren’t working. Investigate the “nonprofits “ and hold them accountable. Perhaps many “homeless “ will not flock to the golden state

By Tim Tunks This Saturday from 4 a.m. through midnight Sunday, Main Street will close to all vehicular traffic from Hill Street, past Ashland and down the short block to Kinney — opening all the pavement for safe outdoor socially distanced dining surrounded by a family-friendly public piazza. You can read more about it on the city webpage (santamonica.gov/ main-street-al-fresco), but stick with this story to get an idea of how we got here.

In March 2020, Santa Monica city government became acutely aware of the pandemic’s potential to damage Main Street business and social activities because of State-ordered closures for inside dining. We know the district draws much of its energy from the lively restaurant and bar life. “What could we do to make up for lost inside eating and drinking?” the City Council asked.

ment Association and the Ocean Park Association as they lobbied for the “Al Fresco” Parklet plan we’ve had during this past year with much of the curbside parking lane converted to small corralled parklet seating areas.

Because a few experimental parklets had been successful over the last couple of years on Main Street and elsewhere in the city, “Al Fresco” was an easy sell.

After a year’s experience with “Al Fresco”, some lessons have been learned. Reduced capacity because of the required distances between tables and their individual pods of patrons meant fewer customers spread out in the narrow Parklets. Lack of capacity rendered some businesses no longer profitable. Staff layoffs and some business closures darkened the future.

Last April, the business district and the Ocean Park Association leaders brought the concept to the capable hands of the city’s Mobility Division. That is where this chapter of the story starts with an interview graciously granted by Santa Monica City public information officer Constance Farrell and Jacqui Swartz, spokesperson for the Mobility Division’s experimental Pilot Program.

By removing the traffic and bike lanes that took up much of the potential Piazza space, increased seating capacity will be distributed with plenty of space for contagion mitigating social distancing. Nearby traffic that now annoys seated Parklet diners and celebrants on Main Street is banished during the four planned “Open Street” weekends.

Wishing to keep the scale of this initial “Open Street” experiment small by limiting public promotion to local families and residents, they hope to keep things manageable while they collect valuable data. Limiting the scope helped reduce

objections from the Main Street merchants who felt the loss of traffic and street parking would reduce their business, while offering some reassurance to nearby residents that negative traffic and parking impacts wouldn’t be too bad. The left turn restrictions and available parking lots are noted in the plan’s diagram. This should facilitate navigation over to Main this weekend while saving the neighbors from traffic grief generated by wandering drivers seeking their spot to park.

Touching base with the city fire and police departments, and many consultations with all the Main Street stakeholders guided the decision of exactly which blocks would be involved. (I would have preferred including the block from Ocean Park Boulevard to Hill Street in order to include the Sunday market activity and the courtyard space for more public entertainment.)

Farrell and Swartz enumerated many other concerns and associated mitigations. Because there will be no bike or scooter riding in the “Open Street” zone, volunteers and city staff will be be on hand to enforce that

prohibition. Indeed the MiniMobility scooter and bike rental companies are prepared to ‘geo-fence’ the area to make sure their units are deactivated if need be.

Offering a safe family-oriented experience is a primary goal, so in addition to various entertainments spread about the area, strict mask wearing for all but small children and those with medical excuses will be enforced. “The full force of the city is in place to make ‘Open Streets’ safe and enjoyable,” Farrell pledged.

mitigation protocols, this experiment takes on a new urgency — one not unlike the initial pandemic emergency that motivated our original Al Fresco Parklet Plan15 months ago.

We can hope the data gained from this pilot will lead to a safer and more prosperous future for Santa Monica’s Main Street. And please let me add my own personal wish that building successful “Open Street” models will help us find a future where automotive tyranny can be softened as we, the people, reclaim paved urban real estate.

During the pandemic, Venice resident Sasha Gary started using an aeroponic gardening system to grow fresh and healthy produce.

Aeroponic gardening systems take up minimal space, use less water and work three times faster than regular gardening.

Fresh Food Venice resident grows own produce with aeroponic gardening system

By Haley Beyer During the pandemic, people were faced with a shortage of food in stores. Venice resident Sasha Gary decided that she wasn’t going to let that hold her back from having access to food that was fresh, healthy and nutritious.

During World War I and II, families were running out of food so they began to grow their own. This was called victory gardening, which is also known as tower gardening. It also provided enough food to send to soldiers and resulted in improved morale because it allowed people at home to contribute to the war efforts.

Tower gardening is a 3-foot

aeroponic system for indoor use that makes growing fresh produce convenient and even a little exciting! Gary has grown spinach, kale, cilantro, parsley, swiss chard, edible flowers and lettuce, and is looking to expand into basil, mint and thyme.

Basically, any kind of produce can be grown using this system.

There is even the option for a bigger base for the system so it can handle the weight of watermelons, cantaloupe, and other dense fruits and vegetables.

“This changed my whole way of living,” Gray said. “I can provide myself with food for the rest of my life.”

doesn’t take up as much room, which means the water must be shot up vertically then comes back down onto the plant. As a result, the system uses less water because it is constantly being recycled through the system. This technology works three times faster than regular gardening and requires less maintenance as well. The weeds still need to be pulled and the plant must still be provided with water and nutrients, though not as often as other plants.

It is less work and easier to do, making it ideal for older generations who still want to spend their time gardening. It can also benefit kids because they learn how to grow food.

“It encourages kids to eat healthy because they’ll be excited that they grew it on their own,” Gary said. They have come in handy for restaurants too because now they can grow their own ingredients. They do not have to rely on delivery and have no worry on the freshness of the meals they are serving.

Another benefit of tower gardening is that it helps to create a healthier environment in one’s home by providing oxygen.

To spread this knowledge, Gary was able to donate a system to Broadway Elementary, thanks to all the neighbors who contributed. The system came with a 30-week lesson

plan for the kids to guide them through the process and help them work together. Gary is now a distributor of these systems.

“I think food should be accessible to everyone,” Gary said. “This is the way of the future.”

The system costs $550 without lights (for those that can keep the system in sunlight for most of the day) or $850 with lights.

The program comes with hands-on coaching from Gary, a lesson plan, and the opportunity to join her Facebook group gardening club.

Obituary Kathryn “Kitty” Elizabeth Luond McCarthy (Sept. 12, 1923 – June 6, 2021) COURTESY IMAGES

Longtime resident of Venice and native Californian, Kathryn “Kitty” McCarthy, peacefully passed at 97 years old in her Venice home of 70 years on June 6, 2021. She was surrounded by her loving children.

Kitty was born in Imperial Valley on a dairy farm to parents Elizabeth and Joseph Luond, and older sister Viola. She often attributed her strong work ethic and cheerful nature to her upbringing on the farm, where she milked cows at 3 a.m. and 3 p.m. every day, as well as harvested the alfalfa that fed their herd.

As a teen, she played softball and participated in gymnastics, once ‘performing’ on the back of a flatbed truck in a Fourth of July parade in Brawley. A good student, she started working during high school at a local drugstore and moved briefly up to Washington state to live with her older sister and husband.

Returning to California in 1951, they purchased a home on Amoroso Place, where she lived the rest of her days. Following daughters Kathryn and Pamela, Kitty had Susan at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica. A pioneer of natural childbirth, her following three children, Theresa, David, and John, were birthed in the home on Amoroso

Place.

While JC worked at Edwards Airforce Base and then at McDonnell Douglas, Kitty raised her six children. A convert to Catholicism, she was continually active at St. Mark Church and School in Venice, including Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, Parent Club, etc. She participated and led many activities, from picnics to fundraisers, bowling leagues and seasonal parties.

Known for her sense of humor, willingness to take on any job, and gregarious nature, Kitty became a favorite of not only her peers, but of all her children’s friends. She never turned a child away and was known to cart as many as eight children (before seatbelt rules) in her Econoline van to ballgames, cheerleading practice and concerts. (Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl!)

When the children were grown, Kitty and JC enjoyed traveling

in their motor home or taking cruises with their longtime friends, when she wasn’t babysitting her grandkids! Well into her nineties, still surrounded by family and friends, Kitty was always up for a game of cards, a puzzle, a walk on the jetty, or a good ‘game show’ on TV. Kitty was a kind, funny and loving woman who will be sorely missed by not only her six surviving children and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but by all their friends and the residents of Amoroso, where she was declared “The Mayor” for her 70 years of ‘service’ to her neighbors.

Her funeral rosary and mass will be held at St. Mark Church in Venice on July 27th at 10 am.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to Adopt a Family, through the Archiodese of Los Angeles, to honor her love of all children.

By Andres de Ocampo Cedars-Sinai architects are redefining how hospitals are built by utilizing mock hospital rooms and feedback from medical staff to create a new 9-story Cedars-Sinai Marina del Rey hospital.

Zeke Triana, AIA, vice president of Facilities Planning, Design and Construction at Cedars Sinai, whose team is leading the project for the high-tech rebuild of the current two-story Cedars-Sinai hospital, said, “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity, and the little details are so important,” according to a Cedars-Sinai article.

The 9-story rebuild, which is expected to be a state-of-the-art community hospital, prompted Triana and his team to pursue an unorthodox approach to designing and building the new hospital.

“I call it the ‘model home’,” Triana said, explaining the implementation of the mock rooms to the design process.

“There’s six rooms. They have the same paint color, flooring,

patient headwall, outlets and gasses, ceiling, lighting.”

The idea, according to Triana, is to create fully identical mock rooms of what’s to be expected in the new hospital. Triana’s construction background and past experience of designing hospitals allows him to help Cedars-Sinai achieve their intended design in construction.

Describing how the mock rooms are different from the traditional design process, Triana said that when building a hospital, the architects begin by interviewing the doctors, nurses and caregivers of the hospital and follow up with a post-interview floorplan, an illustration and a 3D virtual video of the hospital rooms.

“Most people, in my experience, don’t understand what they’re looking at but they might be afraid to admit it,” Triana said. “This process usually provides very little comments from the medical staff.”

With Triana’s process, “the staff can put themselves in the actual space and we can get all

kinds of feedback,” he said.

“We want to get the feedback about the whole environment, which is difficult to get from two-dimensional drawings.”

Mary Worley, RN, a nursing director at Cedar-Sinai Marina del Rey Hospital who toured the mock rooms and gave feedback, said, “It was so helpful to be able to walk through the mock rooms instead of just looking at the renderings. It really gave me and my fellow nurses a sense of what it will be like to work in these rooms, and what will be like for our patients. The rooms were very realistic and really helped us get a sense of precisely where we need to put things and how the patients will benefit from it.”

Though Triana said that the task of making changes and rebuilding the mock rooms, which are still going through changes, took a “few months,” he explained that it’s worth it.

“When we build the hospital, we can minimize changes,” he said. “We can build it faster and maintain costs. “By designing and building the new hospital

this way, we can incorporate the changes into the drawings, and it gets built right the first time, which is my goal.”

Initial changes to all of the mock rooms included redirecting the placements of outlets against the patient’s headboard which the medical staff will be using frequently while tending to patients.

Worley, after viewing the mock hospital rooms, gave feedback to Triana and his team and said that one of the outlets in a medical/surgical room was so close to the patient “that if a nurse were coming in to do something on a machine, we would be right in the patient’s face and kind of bothersome to the patient. So, we were able to move that outlet out of the way and make it more comfortable area for the patient.”

Feedback from medical staff also resulted in a major change to the placement of sinks that would sit in-between patient rooms in the corridor of the new hospital. Staff, who would use the sinks when entering and exiting a patient’s room, said

that the sinks stuck out too far and could cause a safety issue.

“We built the sink and the medical staff came to see it and they said, ‘This could cause splashing. The splashing could spill onto the floor and come out into the corridor,’” Triana said.

The sink was moved back further into the wall, which resulted in a four to six week change that redesigned the layout of the sink. Changes to the mock rooms not only take into account aspects of how medical staff will use the space, but also includes thoughtful details for the patients care.

For example, in the Intensive Care Unit, where the visibility of patients in need of critical care is extremely important, Triana explained that a viewing window for nurses to view patients easily is essential.

“These patients are usually very sick,” he said. “In the ICU, every second counts.”

Triana, who plans on implementing natural light to patient’s rooms and windows with views of the ocean and the

The feedback provided by health care professionals is critical to making the hightech rebuild of the current 2-story, 50-year-old hospital a success.

Santa Monica mountains, said that it’s purposeful for creating a “healing environment.”

“There will be a space in the new hospital called the ‘Plaza level’,” he said. “It will have healing gardens for both patients, visitors and staff to be outdoors and step out of the hospital to take a breath of fresh air to rejuvenate themselves.”

Triana’s inspiration for the implantation of nature into the design of the new hospital came to him a year ago when he was a patient in the hospital.

“What really helped me when I was a patient, was a view of the outdoors and nature,” Triana said. “It helped me relax and it lowered my blood pressure. The circadian rhythm is a part of this, to be able to see the sunset and mountains, you can know what time of the day it is and where you are. It provides orientation because you can be very disoriented in a hospital; this is all a part of the healing process.”

Besides the views of nature and windows letting in natural

light, Triana wants to incorporate the color green to some design aspects of the hospital.

In the ICU, he said there will be duplicate paintings on the patient’s headboard and on the wall across from the patient with a green light behind the artwork.

“We’re doing this so patients can enjoy a beautiful piece of art that hopefully calms you down,” Triana said. “Colors that you might see in nature and impact the patient care experience- that’s kind of what we’re playing with.”

The color green will also play a role for surgeons and other medical staff in the hospital’s Operating Room, which features durable stainless-steel walls that are not traditionally used in Operating Rooms. The green light coupled with the stainless-steel walls will create a cleaner, more sterile environment, and other changes make the Operating Room a unique space in the new hospital, according to Triana.

“Green light is supposed to be easier on your eyes and

surgeries can last a long time,” Triana said, “Making sure that the hospital is efficient and functional for our caregivers is important because it will turn into efficient and better care for our patients.”

The new hospital will be built in the same location as the existing Cedars-Sinai facing Lincoln Boulevard, and is estimated to be completed in five years, according to Triana.

The existing 2-story building will remain open until the new hospital’s completion but will eventually be removed to create parking space.

“The nurses are so excited for the rebuild,” Worley said. “I think it will lead to greater job satisfaction to be working in spaces that we helped design that make it easier to do our jobs. The rooms will benefit the patients too because we’ve kept them in mind as we walked through these spaces.

The staff is excited. We are ready to be bigger and brighter and offer more to our community, to the nurses and to everyone at the hospital.”

La La Land Kind Cafe, which originated in Dallas, was founded with the sole purpose of empowering foster youth by providing them with employment and mentorship opportunities while setting out on a mission to normalize kindness.

“La La Land is not in the business of coffee, we’re in the business of kindness,” said founder Francois Reihani. “We want to normalize kindness and we believe that starts with showing that a business can do more than just focus on making profits.

It’s about balance. By practicing kindness and encouraging our customers to spread love and positivity, we hope to set the example that all businesses can and need to care for our people, planet and society.

Additionally, with kindness at the core of our values and business model, we truly hope to normalize kindness and create a model that provides to people and businesses what kindness can do.”

Reihani, who is a 2021 Forbes 30 under 30 honoree, founded La La Land in 2019.

The first location opened in the Lower Greenville neighborhood in Dallas, and since then, two more locations have opened in Dallas. The Santa Monica space is the cafe’s first location in Los Angeles.

“La La Land is on a mission to normalize kindness and LA was the natural next step for us,” Reihani said. “I also spent some time growing up in LA; in fact, one of my first jobs was at a car dealership in Santa Monica so I have firsthand experience of what it’s like to work in this city.

With that experience in mind, I believe that LA is a city where La La Land’s kindness-focused culture will really resonate with and impact the community.

“Beyond that, La La Land’s opening in LA serves to empower the foster youth community here. We were very purposeful in choosing our Santa Monica location to ensure easy access to public transportation. Many of those in the foster youth community and those who have aged out of the system don’t have their own methods of transportation, and La La Land’s neighboring train and bus lines make it easier for our foster youth employees to get to and from work.”

La La Land is an all organic cafe and everything on their menu, from the coffees and teas to the toasts and pastries, are sourced from all organic ingredients.

Additionally, the California menu also features a vegan food menu, which offers several different tasty and vegan toast options. The remainder of our signature items – both drinks and food – are available at all locations.”

Customers can purchase unique merchandise in store including hats, sweatsuits, t-shirts and more that sport the “Don’t Be A Dick” slogan and other “kind-inspired” messages. A percentage of all profits will go to the We are One Project, a nonprofit organization that was founded by Reihani to provide the right tools for businesses to come together and employ foster youth.

La La Land’s Santa Monica location recently launched its youth mentorship program and each of their foster youth employees start by participating in a eight-week paid internship where they come into the cafe to observe and learn the basics. At the end of the internship, the cafe works with them to strategize the best next step for themselves personally.

“In the past, we’ve had employees choose to stay at La La Land to help others in the foster youth community, but we’ve also had many who we’ve helped match with mentors so they can find a job they’re passionate about,” Reihani shared.

“For the time being, we’re hyper focused on making sure our foster youth employees at our new location are getting the right resources and guidance they need to start to build out their lives. That said, we do hope to expand La La Land to more locations in the future so we can continue our mission of spreading and normalizing kindness while also empowering the local foster youth communities.”

By Kamala Kirk Recently, The Beach Club at The Victorian opened its doors in Santa Monica. The Beach Club is housed in the historic “Victorian”, an iconic and locally loved building on Main Street.

The space underwent a top-down design renovation to create a contemporary California aesthetic anchored by air spaces, lush foliage and sophisticated textural touches throughout the varied indoor and outdoor settings. The outdoor patio, indoor dining rooms and intimate upstairs lounge offer guests an array of different dining and imbibing atmospheres.

“The Victorian was exactly what you imagine – an old Victorian house,” said Paulo Daguiar, one of The Beach Club’s owners. “We wanted to make it more inviting by opening up the inter spaces.

Our designer incorporated neutral hues with sage accents, lighter woods and more greenery to soften the overall look.

We’re so pleased with how it turned out and the feedback has been so positive.

On the ground floor and outdoor patio, The Beach Club operates as a full-service restaurant and features a dedicated oyster bar while The Victorian Beach Lounge, located upstairs, is an elegant nod to European ultra lounges and offers elevated bottle service.

“We’ve always wanted to open a restaurant,” Daguiar said. “When we first launched the whiskey bar and live music concept, it was so well received. We were busy and continued with that concept for several years. A couple of years ago we revisited the restaurant idea and began discussing what we wanted to create and talked a lot about what was missing in Santa Monica.

Growing up in a small town in Rio, I knew I wanted to create a restaurant with a beach club atmosphere … delicious food made with simple ingredients and cooked with real firewood in a fun and inviting atmosphere. We used last year’s closure to redesign the restaurant, create new menus and assemble a fantastic team to launch The Beach Club at The Victorian.”

Helmed by Executive Chef Justin Aquino, the new concept centers on local staples reimagined through a versatile palette influenced by Mediterranean, French and Italian flavors. tequila, jalapeno, pineapple, lime and agave in addition to the I’m Basic with vodka, strawberry, lemon and agave. A customizable Japanese High Ball includes a choice of Japanese whiskey, vodka or gin plus club soda, tonic or ginger beer.

BOND SCARE My roommate and I are best friends, and we’ve lived together for four years. Recently, she got into a pretty serious relationship, and it seems her priorities have totally shifted. Is a best friend always second place to a boyfriend? Or are they both of equal value?

It can feel like a betrayal to be downgraded in your bestie’s life when a serious boyfriend comes around.

However, evolution’s ultimately to blame. “We are survival machines – robot vehicles blindly programmed” by evolution to preserve our genes by passing them to generations after us,” explains biologist Richard Dawkins in “The Selfish Gene.”

Simply put, we’re each a big flesh bus driven by our genes, subconsciously steered to do their bidding. Psychiatrist and evolutionary medicine founder Randolph Nesse sums up the grim reality: “Evolution “does not give a fig about our happiness.” It likewise doesn’t care whether

we have friends, save for how they might help us survive and pass on our genes.

This sounds cold, but understanding the evolutionary reality can help you stay in your friend’s life and keep her in yours – perhaps without taking her shift in priorities personally. I use that understanding – despite finding kids loud, sticky and expensive – to be supportive of friends who are moms of young kids. I insist to them (and genuinely feel) that it’s okay if they need to put off a call or drinks we’ve planned when they’re wiped from work plus momming. An important caveat: These are dear friends who show up for me if I’m in need; I’m not rolling over for a bunch of userish socio-Pattys.

You likewise might consider reconfiguring your expectations so you two can stay friends and you won’t make her feel she has to choose between you and the guy. You’d surely lose that battle – which means you and she would both end up losing. Supposedly, a truly “intimate” relationship is the sort you have with a man you love, but...well...when’s the last time coffee with your bestie ran long and you faked an orgasm so you could get on with your day?

HASTE CRIME After my third date with a guy, he texted and asked why we hadn’t had sex yet. I was taking it slow-ish because I was trying to figure out whether I liked him (and vice versa). I was pretty annoyed at his question, and we agreed we should stop seeing each other. Well, last week, he started texting me again. Nothing groundbreaking, just “Hey” and “What’s up?” What’s his deal – does he want another chance? Do I give it to him?

— Unsure You probably like to wait to have sex till a guy shows he’s truly interested in who you are – reflected in his asking questions like, “So, who are your favorite authors?” as opposed to, “Say, can you put your feet behind your head?”

Having sex can leave a woman with a belly of “OMG. How the hell do I pay for orthodontia, rehab and grad school?”

Because of this, female emotions evolved to make women feel unhappy or ambivalent about having sex in the absence of signs a guy cares about them (and will stick around and “invest”). However, men’s standards for sex partners tend to be, um, lower: along the lines of, “So, are you female?” (if the man asking is solidly straight) – and in a pinch: “Are you at least a

mammal?”

When the evolved “sexual strategy” that’s typically optimal for one sex – like women taking it slowly – conflicts with that of the other, “strategic interference” like deception often ensues, explains evolutionary psychologist David Buss. Men feigning commitment to get sex is an example of this.

However, with the evolution of this strategy, a deception-circumventing counterstrategy co-evolved in women: defaulting to the assumption they’re being conned into bed until proven otherwise.

Chances are the guy’s little “Where’s my sex?!” tantrum resulted from his getting impatient and fed up and falling out of strategic pretendo mode.

Buss explains that our emotions are our first line of defense against strategic interference, and right on cue, yours were all, “You pig!”

Regarding why the guy’s back, he might be bored or desperate – or think he made a mistake. It’s possible he misses you and wants another chance. If you’re open to giving him one, make it clear that if he’s just looking for a hookup, he’s in the wrong place. As for when you might have sex with him, if ever, it’ll happen when it happens. (Your vagina is not on a preset timer like a bomb.)

“These Feathered Flames” follows twin heirs who are born in imagined Tóurin with fates decided at birth. While Izaveta remains at court to learn the skills she would need as the future queen, Asya is taken away to train with her aunt, the mysterious Firebird, who ensures magic remained balanced in the realm and takes payment, often in blood.

Before Asya’s training is completed, the ancient power blooms inside her, which can mean only one thing: the queen is dead, and a new ruler must be crowned. After this unexpected development, the sisters are thrust into their roles and must figure out how to navigate these

roles, who they can trust and uncover the truth of the killer.

“These Feathered Flames” is part of a duology, and Overy plans to release the second half, “This Cursed Crown”, next year.

What are her wishes for the two books?

“I wish for it to feel like a satisfying, complete story with strong fairy tale influences and sisters very much at the center,” Overy said. “I also hope that it can provide an escape for teen and young adult readers. As a teen, reading was very much my escape from the real world and my refuge, so I hope I can provide that for teens today — in particular queer teens, who I hope can see themselves in this story.”

year at UCLA. What does she miss from her former life?

“I sometimes miss the rain, which I never expected,” Overy said. “Other than that, I mostly miss the people, especially this past year as I haven’t been able to visit. I don’t like to make absolutes, but for now I’m very settled in L.A., especially as I’m pursuing screenwriting as well.

But who knows what might happen!”

All she can say with certainty is that in 2023, she’s also publishing “The Gingerbread Witch,” a middle grade title centered on “Hansel and Gretel” that will kick off a series of Grimm’s Fairy Tale retellings.

The Gingerbread Witch is Overy’s foray into writing for readers ages 9 to 12. After Hansel and Gretel push the witch into the oven, the witch’s young apprentice must find a way to resurrect her or risk all the witch’s creations turning back into gingerbread — including the apprentice herself.

“It was so much fun to get to explore in that arena and write the kind of book I loved at that age,” Overy said.

As a child, Overy was a compulsive reader and habitually scoured her school library for material. Her mom allowed her to buy a book each time they were out shopping.

“Some of my favorites were Cornelia Funke (especially ‘The Thief Lord’) and the ‘Artemis Fowl’ series,” Overy said. “I also loved ‘His Dark Materials’, especially the idea of daemons.

I’ve always loved books like that that take you out of the real world and give you some escape — as well as morally grey characters. They were definitely very influential on my own writing.”

Her favorite British authors include Enid Blyton, especially the ‘Malory Towers’ series and ‘The Famous Five’ books. “My dad read me a lot of those when I was little so they have a very special place in my heart,” Overy said.

Overy likes to plan her stories in detail, sometimes delaying to start writing because she’s so involved in the nitty-gritty.

“I like having a map to follow when starting a new draft, it always makes it feel less intimidating,” Overy shared.

The Firebird represents a treasure that is rare and difficult to possess. Overy, who watched the ballet version when she was 14, builds on the special powers of this mythical creature to enhance her novel.

“I remember really clearly how the Firebird was depicted as a very much feminine figure, and how all the men in the story wanted to either kill it or control it,” she said. “I wanted to write a version where the Firebird got her own agency and power.”

The young adult book, characterized by vibrant, imagery-rich writing, also draws on Overy’s sistership.

“I’m very close with my own

“These Feathered Flames” is a queer feminist retelling of the Russian folktale “The Firebird” and is full of court intrigue, complicated sister relationships and heartpounding twists.

“Although I sometimes deviate, I find it really helps get me going to have those plans in place. I’d say the biggest challenge is that I can sometimes get stuck on plotting.”

Writing helps to satisfy Overy’s creative side.

“I’ve always had so many stories in my head and there’s something so magical in getting to write those down and then share them,” Overy said. “With publishing a book, it’s amazing seeing that book go and live in other people’s imaginations too.”

Overy’s engrossing fantasy tale has earned many accolades including the Goodreads Most Anticipated YA Books of 2021 and Amazon Editor’s Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy Pick.

“It was important for me when writing ‘These Feathered Flames’ to create a world without homophobia as, historically, there was no reason for it to exist in this magical world,” Overy said.

“I wanted a story where two girls could fall in love and face off against evil, but not have to question their own identities.

Again, this would’ve meant a lot to me as a teen and I hope it will provide a refuge for other queer teens today.”

Samanta sees promise in her musical son.

“I feel music to him is a necessity,” said Samanta, a longtime music producer. “He’s always sitting at the piano.

Before he says, ‘Good morning,’ he has to go to the piano.

He’s not that kind of guy where we have to tell him to go practice. It’s an outlet for him.”

Jeremy is proud of his son, whom he described as “enthusiastic about all-things music.

He’s really excited about the camp.”

“He’s worked hard and what’s great is it really isn’t work for

him. He just loves it. It’s all worked out really well. I’m glad he has his music,” Jeremy said.

Jeremy said Jaq has a lot of energy who plays all the time.

“Sometimes it drives his sister crazy, but we don’t like to put limitations on the music,” said Jeremy, who recently composed, produced and recorded with Laura Bell Bundy for “Women of Tomorrow.” “He’s always on the piano. What’s really impressive about him for me is he has an amazing ear.

“Half of the music he plays, he figured out by ear. He’s got a better ear for the nuances than I do.”

Santa Monica teen Jaq Adelman was recently chosen for the 17th annual Grammy Camp, where he will focus on the keyboard.

By Christina Fuoco-Karasinski Jaq Adelman’s dream is to write orchestral music, but he’s unsure he’ll have the opportunity to do it professionally.

Jaq is jump starting his career.

The Santa Monica teen was chosen for the 17th annual Grammy Camp, along with 80 other students from around the United States. The program includes mentoring by All Time Low, Echosmith and The War and Treaty, who will discuss their career paths and help students prepare for the music industry.

The signature music industry camp for U.S. high school students will be held virtually from Tuesday, July 20 to Saturday, July 24.

“Grammy Camp is a prime example of the Grammy Museum’s mission and education initiatives,” said Michael Sticka, Grammy Museum president. “While the program will be a virtual experience again this year, it remains one of the most immersive summer camps for high school students interested in a career in music

and continues to give young people the opportunity to study with music industry professionals, resulting in a genuine learning experience about life in the music industry.”

The program features seven music career tracks: audio engineering, electronic music production, music business, music journalism, songwriting, vocal performance and instrumental performance. All tracks culminate in virtual media projects, recordings and/or performances.

Jaq will focus on the keyboard.

The 14-year-old recent Lincoln Middle School graduate is set to attend Santa Monica’s Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences when school resumes.

As a youngster, Jaq was influenced by orchestral music, specifically the theme to the 1970s-era “Superman” TV show. Later, “The Blue Danube,” which was predominately featured in “2001: A Space Odyssey,” was a favorite.

Jaq picked up his hobby by playing classical music and then moving on to pop. He stressed

he doesn’t want to be a performer. He would like to be able to perform, but he yearns to become a composer and songwriter.

He has a deep understanding of music for someone who’s in his early teens. Recently, Jaq was accepted to the music program EMMI (Elizabeth Mandel Music Institute) at Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences for piano.

“In the middle of fifth grade, I started playing trumpet, though,” he said. “At first, I started with the viola. I was very bad at that. I played trumpet and I thought it was fun. I still play that. I definitely say, though, I’m way ahead in piano.”

Jaq, who enjoys music by Queen and Billy Joel, was led into music by his father, Jeremy.

His mother, Samanta, is also a musician.

“We raised him playing music all the time,” Samanta said.

“When he was little, we always had a guitar in the living room, singing songs, classic rock songs and classical music. He

Cardboard City Santa Monica project invites crowds to pop-up art center COURTESY OF REDISCOVER CENTER

“Cardboard City” is an innovative pop-up community art center located on Third Street Promenade from July 8 through August 29.

By Bridgette M. Redman Parents have long known that kids are often more fascinated by the cardboard box a gift comes in than the gift itself. So why not take the kids to a 10,000-square-foot city made entirely of cardboard?

Cardboard City is an innovative pop-up community art center that will be open on the Third Street Promenade in downtown Santa Monica through August 29. It will feature large-scale cardboard sculptures, architectural models and free family art activities using cardboard crafting techniques.

“I am excited by what we’ve created here — amazing exhibits of art,” said Johnathan Bijur, executive director of reDiscover Center, which has built Cardboard City in partnership with the City of Santa Monica’s Office of Sustainability and the Environment and Starpoint Properties. “There is

this huge zone of cardboard activities where families can make things.”

In addition to the free exhibits and art activities, visitors can sign up for fee-based classes or buy tools and materials for making cardboard art at home.

There is even a camp that runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. The camp costs $200 for ages 7 to 12 with scholarships available.

“Cardboard City is a free community pop-up art center where everything is made out of cardboard,” Bijur said. “The art is made out of cardboard, the furniture is made out of cardboard, the projects your kids will make and take home are also made out of cardboard.

Created in partnership with the L.A. arts community, there are amazing sculptures to inspire, as well as artists in residence each week giving prompts for projects kids can make to take home or contribute to one of our

growing installations.”

The city had its grand opening on July 8 and will continue to be open Thursdays through Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. at 1231 Third Street Promenade. reDiscover Center has a mission to develop children’s creativity through hands-on making with sustainable materials. The “reDiscover” refers to rediscovering waste materials for educational, artistic and creative projects.

They offer community engagement events like Cardboard City as well as camps, classes and school services.

In the past seven years, reDiscover has been expanding its tinkering program, taking woodworking tools into elementary schools and teaching students how to safely use them.

Throughout the history of the 19-year-old nonprofit, they’ve been creating engagement programs of which Cardboard City is the largest.

“As we started to come out of the depths of the pandemic in the spring with vaccination rates rising, we saw an opportunity for a large-scale crowd interaction and took a gamble that we’d be able to have crowds making art, seeing art, and thinking about art,” Bijur said.

“We reached out to work with Downtown Santa Monica and they connected us with Starpoint.”

Downtown Santa Monica retail space has been hit hard — even before the pandemic — and Starpoint was eager to have this space reactivated. Dijur said all of them were eager to turn the Promenade space into something Santa Monica has never seen before.

“We’re trying to spark joy,” Dijur said. “When you see a kid putting cardboard together to make a hat, adding a few more pieces to make antlers and turn it into imaginary headgear, they see that they can make some-

thing. They are creative and capable. The parents are smiling, the facilitators are coming by. The artists in residence are seeing all this positive energy.”

Choosing cardboard as a medium

The event focuses on cardboard for many reasons, starting with its accessibility.

“Everyone has seen a cardboard box,” Dijur said. “Kids of all ages recognize it. They understand what it is. There is no learning curve for finding out what cardboard is.”

For many years, reDiscover has worked with recyclables and discarded materials from industry in all their programs.

Cardboard has been one of them for many years. They have two suppliers in particular.

One gives them truckloads of appliance boxes that people can crawl through, cut up and turn into epic pieces. Another

ArgonautNews.com supplier gives them micro-boxes for smaller projects.

Cardboard is structural and creates a bridge between paper and scissor crafts and major construction. With cardboard boxes, artists can build threedimensional objects that are tall, inviting children to learn about key 21st-centurydesign concepts.

“We are helping kids to work with a material in creative ways that allow them to do not just art making, but engineering and engineering problem solving,” Dijur said.

He added that cardboard is just fun and that everyone has had a positive experience playing in a cardboard box or making something such as a playhouse, rocket ship or train out of it.

“We are trying to bring happiness, particularly this year after so many tragedies,” Dijur said.

Bringing in artists

The Cardboard City was built with several artists working together as a collective. A different artist is then in residence each week, creating work that will make the city more dense as the two months go on. Dijur encourages parents to make multiple trips to the city with their kids to learn new art and engineering skills and see the exhibits as they continue to grow and build.

The artists have created such things as 12-foot sculptures, cardboard dresses and costumes, cardboard sea creatures.

Some artists include Ann Weber, Sherri Madison, Lynn Christopher, Aaron Kramer and Joshua Abarbanel.

While walking through the exhibit before opening day, Dijur described one of Weber’s works, pointing out that she is a well-recognized artist in the cardboard art world.

“She works primarily in large-scale biomorphic woven sculpture,” Dijur said. “They are huge and substantial, taller than I am. She does wonderful work of carving the space around the sculpture as well, often arranging multiple pieces in relation to each other. It’s just fantastic to see and it inspires a lot of thinking on my part.”

It’s that sort of inspiration that Dijur hopes visitors will find when they visit Cardboard City, inspiration that will make them want to turn their hands to cardboard art.

How Long Should a House Stay on the Market?

When you put your house on the market, you obviously want it to sell as fast as possible. In 2020, homes spent an average of 25 days on the market. Compare that to 2010, when the average number of days to sell a home was a whopping 140.

It’s a seller’s market right now, especially since inventory is low and building materials are incredibly expensive.

While the time on the market has, on average, gone down, there are a lot of individual factors that play a role in how long it takes to sell a house. So how long is too long, and why does it matter?

The DOM Metric DOM stands for “days on the market,” and it’s a relevant metric. The National Association of Realtors says days on the market or DOM is the number of days from the date when a property is listed on the MLS to the date when there’s a signed contract for the property’s sale. The more those days tick upward, the staler your listing gets.

The Effects of a Home Being On the Market for Too Long

If your home stays on the market too long without being sold, there can be serious consequences. First, a buyer will know that, and they’re undoubtedly going to use it as a negotiating tool. That means you may have to sell your house for significantly lower than you intended.

When your home seems like it’s a good property, but it stays on the market for too long, especially in a hot market, buyers are also going to start to worry there’s something wrong with it.

Inevitably a home generates the most interest when it’s fresh on the market. That’s when you’re going to see a buzz and sense of activity that will include more showings and phone calls. Then, over time interest will decline.

Once all the buyers who are currently looking have seen your home, you’re going to have to wait for new buyers to enter the market.

How Long Is Too Long?

You have to look at local conditions in your market to figure how long is too long, but right now, if you’re in a pretty popular area, if your home has been on the market for more than a couple of months, it might be time to rethink things.

If you aren’t sure, talk to your agent about the average time other homes in your neighborhood are staying on the market. You don’t want to reduce your price too soon, which is why it’s key to have a good idea of what’s happening with houses around yours.
