L E T T E R S Stop presidential corruption Editor: Republicans and Democrats should be able to agree that no president, regardless of party, should be able to obstruct and undermine the will of the American people or exploit weaknesses in our political system for personal gain.

That’s where the Protecting Our Democracy Act comes in. If passed, it would prevent future abuse of presidential power and corruption, increase transparency, and ensure presidents of either party can be held accountable.

Strengthening the guardrails on presidential power is just common sense.

If the average person used their office for personal gain, they’d go to jail. If the average person could pardon themselves, there would be no rule of law.

No president should be above the law.

That’s why I’m urging Congress to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act. We must prevent future presidents of any party from abusing the power of their office.

Sisters in Strength

Surviving siblings reflect on the Holocaust

By Michele Robinson he United States Holocaust Remembrance Day on April 28 marked an important milestone in world history. While it is a time to reflect and remember those who perished, it is also an opportunity to commemorate those who survived.

Margot Manasse and Charlotte Wulkan are two sisters who persevered against the odds.

Born in Chemnitz, Germany in 1923 and 1924 respectively, the sisters were the youngest siblings in the Unger household.

Their Orthodox parents, Leah and Sigmund, had three boys and three girls.

For the first part of their childhood, they lived a normal happy life with school, friends, family and faith. Their father was a small business owner and loved by his children.

“We had great admiration for our dad, he was a wonderful dad and very patient,” Margot said.

Things began to change in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power. One day, Sigmund was warned by a German man that he was on a list and needed to leave at once. He fled overnight

and his children had no knowledge of his whereabouts nor any contact with him for eight months.

Education was important to the Unger family and the second

oldest son, Kurt, was ready to attend college. He couldn’t attend a school in Germany because of his faith, so he was accepted to a German-Jewish university in Czechoslovakia. In

October 1933, the family moved to Brno to be closer to Kurt and were reunited with their father.

Rebuilding their lives in a new country proved to be an uphill battle as they had to learn a new language, make new friends and recover financially. Their father changed his occupation, taking a job as a rabbi in a congregation. Their lives changed again in 1941.

From 1941 to 1944, the three sisters, Kurt and their parents were forced to live in the Theresienstadt Ghetto, where Sigmund presided as the chief rabbi. While men and women were separated, Sigmund used his prominent position to keep his wife, son and two younger daughters with him in one room.

In July 1944, Kurt was selected for the men’s transport and sent to Auschwitz.

“We cried bitterly when he left,” Charlotte said. “His last (Continued on page 6)

words to us were, ‘Take care of Mom and Dad.’ We loved him very much.”

A few months later, Margot, Charlotte and their sister, Ruth, were also transported to Auschwitz. Luckily, they only stayed there for three days.

“It was indescribable,” Margot said. “The only thing that kept us going was that we thought our parents were still alive and we wanted to see them again.

Otherwise, life was unbearable.”

The three sisters were then transferred to Oedarian, a labor camp in Saxony where they held different jobs. Charlotte worked in an ammunition factory, Margot filled up lorre cement trucks with shovels, and Ruth made cement. They worked hard performing manual labor 12 hours a day for six months.

kommando” (outside). The request was approved and she was transferred so they could work together.

During the war, some Germans showed kindness towards them, even at great risk to their own personal safety. One of the male workers who Margot called “Green Little Hat” because of the green hat he wore with a feather would bring her food that she shared with her sisters.

“He brought me a sandwich with ham and three apples every day,” Margot said. “He asked Ruth when my birthday was and what I wanted. She said, ‘Salt.’ He got salt and brought it to me.”

Another German man said they were going to the gas chamber and offered to hide Margot, but she refused to go because she didn’t want to be separated from her sisters.

The odds of surviving Oedarian were slim. Only 300 out of 3,000 people transferred there survived, including all three sisters.

As the war was coming to an end, the sisters were transported in trains from Oedarian back to the Theresienstadt Ghetto. They

were happy to return because they hoped to be reunited with their parents and brother.

“We had hope, we thought our parents would be there when we arrived,” Margot said.

What they didn’t know was that three days after they were sent to Auschwitz, their parents were sent in The Last Transport to Auschwitz. Unfortunately, their parents and Kurt did not survive.

Luckily, their other two brothers escaped the concentration camps. Their eldest brother, Alfred, left before the war. He immigrated illegally from Czechoslovakia to Palestine (Israel), where he married and started a family.

Their other brother, Manfred, escaped under a train car to Holland, Casablanca, and then went to France at the age of 17.

After the war he settled in New York, where he lived the remainder of his life.

The five surviving siblings were reunited after the war and remained close the rest of their lives, with frequent long distance phone calls and trips to visit each other.

8,1945, the sisters were placed in Deggendorf, a deportation camp. There they were rehabilitated and met their future husbands. Charlotte married Ernst Wulkan, Margot married Hans Manasse, and Ruth married Kurt Singer.

After the war, the three couples were given assistance from the Jewish Family Service, who helped them with their immigration papers and gave them $10 each, the only money in their pockets.

On September 11, 1947, they sailed to America on the SS Ernie Pyle to start a new life in New York.

Charlotte stayed for only three weeks in New York because she wanted to be with her future husband, who had a job in Los Angeles. In April 1948, after seven months of living in New York, the other sisters followed her and relocated to LA. Residents of West LA since 1948, the sisters originally lived in Venice before renting apartments in a courtyard on 4th Street in Santa Monica. By the 1950s, they became naturalized citizens. As their families grew, they were able to build enough financial security to purchase houses not far from each other.

For a while, the Singer and Manasse families lived a few doors down from each other in Mar Vista, where their children grew up and played together.

The Wulkans bought a house near Westwood and years later, the Singers

moved to the same street as the them.

Margot and Charlotte are now the sole living survivors of their generation.

“We are happy to still be alive,” Charlotte said.

In 2004, Kurt and Ruth passed away at the ages of 96 and 89. Hans Manasse passed away in 2005 at the age of 87 and Ernst Wulkan died in 2015 at the age of 93.

Today, Margot and Charlotte still live independently at their respective homes in Mar Vista and Westwood. Margot just celebrated her 99th birthday with her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren by her side. Similarly, Charlotte will be celebrating her 98th birthday with her family in May, which is Jewish American Heritage Month.

The sisters stay in touch, seeing each other on a regular basis and talking on the phone several times a day with each other. They are grateful to have each other and look forward to every day.

“I am blessed,” Margot said. “I have lovely grandchildren and great-grandchildren.”

Seeking Justice

CRJ holds meeting to discuss how Santa Monica can improve in diversity, equity and inclusion

By Holly Jenvey he topic of the April meeting held by The Committee for Racial Justice (CRJ) was “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion-What Does That Look Like?” CRJ holds monthly meetings with different panelists to discuss the issues of race in Santa Monica with relation to education, housing, police brutality and mass incarceration.

In last month’s meeting, there was discussion on the hard start of Santa Monica’s Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commission, and equitable changes to Santa Monica High School’s 9th and 10th grade English classes.

Other meeting items included CRJ finding issues with the City of Santa Monica’s Right to Return program, which provided affordable housing to families displaced by the construction of Interstate-10 freeway and destruction of the Belmar Triangle. CRJ also sent

and Dolores Sloan, commissioner for the Santa Monica Landmarks Commission.

“We hope that this evening will be a robust time for conversation, reflection, education and healing,” said Angela Scott, one of the steering committee members for CRJ.

Santa Monica Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commission Issues

the Santa Monica Landmark Commission a letter that disagreed with the landmark status of 1665 Appian Way, as it was previously owned by a figure responsible for racial and religious redlining.

Panelists included George Brown, executive director of the

Stanford Center for Racial Justice; Sarah Rodriguez, an English and Chicanx/Latinx literature teacher at Santa Monica High School accompanied by students Danielle Rodriguez and Gustavo Madero; Tara Barauskas, housing chair for CRJ’s Housing Committee;

Brown used to be the chair of the Santa Monica’s Public Safety Reform and Oversight Commission. The commission was formed in 2020 after the murder of George Floyd.

However, even as the commission had recommendations to help with policing in Santa Monica, they couldn’t get far above the ground due to ongoing divisive city politics and lack of community engagement.

“A fundamental concept behind community-oriented policing, not to mention diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging, is engagement with the people that presumably you’re trying to serve,” Brown said.

Recommendations posed by the commission included alternative responses, civilian oversight, best practices for uses of force, community engagement, restorative justice dialogue and budget reallocations.

These recommendations were posed on Sept. 1, 2020 and were rejected by Santa Monica’s city manager, but were passed by City Council. Yet even after the Council’s approval, momentum was lost due to the commission having no engagement with the city.

presented a report, reflecting their view on the events that transpired during the May 31, 2020 protests.

The report wasn’t passed, but in Fall 2021 the opposition changed their vote and a final report was developed. However, the report hasn’t since been shown to the City Council or city manager, as far as the commission knew.

In 2022, the commission faced more problems. An inspector general was hired at the beginning of the year and Brown didn’t believe he met the needs and expectations of the commission. Brown also thought that five of the commission members weren’t committed to the ordinance and were anti-oversight.

“We were swimming upstream,” Brown said.

Brown also shared his thoughts on what needs to be done to improve policing in Santa Monica: • Oversight and reform should be an election issue for City Council for 2022 and 2024 • A public dialogue needs to be conducted about safety and fear with specific public safety

issues • Develop ways to improve and innovate policing • Advocacy groups in Santa Monica need to collaborate with other groups in Southern California and beyond • We need to stay educated about local and state policies and learn when to act

Eliminating the twotrack system for 9th and 10th English classes at SMHS A recent school board meeting at SMHS voted to eliminate the tracking system, which led to mostly White and Asian students taking honors English classes.

Currently, SMHS provides two levels of English classes for ninth and 10th grade students: Honors and College Prep English (non-honors). Starting in this fall, all students will enroll in “College Prep English 9” or “College Prep English 10.”

“We did decide to take on the label ‘College Prep’ for these new non-tracked classes because we think it’s an honest

label,” Rodriguez said. “We want all our students prepared for college.”

The decision was made by one of the high school’s English department administrators who met with Rodriguez and the department chair in 2020 to initiate the change. The motivation behind the shift was mainly due to their experiences of seeing who was enrolled in honors classes as opposed to the non-honors courses. Over many years, students who came from non-socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds made up significant margins of the honors classes.

According to data the SMHS English department conducted for the 2019-20 school year, 60% of socio-economically disadvantaged students were in non-honors English courses in 9th grade and 71% in 10th grade.

Rodriguez pointed out that students who don’t take honors English during those years have inequitable access and opportunity to Advanced Placement (AP) course preparation and enrollment, academic identity and self-confidence, college

competitiveness, professional opportunities, status, and income/wealth.

Even as honors classes would be eliminated, Rodriguez ensures the classes’ difficulty level wouldn’t be reduced.

Instead, students from different cultural backgrounds would be able to study in the same classes and gain equal opportunity.

Differentiated teaching styles would continue to cater to student’s abilities.

Lopez, a graduating senior, headed to University of California Berkeley, shared how her academic experience was divisive. She was placed in AP and honors English, science and history courses, where most of the students she took classes with were White.

With the lack of diversity in her classes, Lopez thinks removing the two-track system would be a more beneficial learning experience as there would be more diverse perspectives.

“A lot of students are thinking that this [the change] is going to take something away from their education, but I really think that they’re gaining an opportunity

to create intersectional relationships in the classroom,” Lopez said.

Madero, a senior from Mexico City, was initially told by his advisor to take regular classes in the ninth grade. However, in his sophomore year, his parents pushed him to take honors classes. Madero enrolled in honors English and science.

Upon taking those courses, Madero was performing just as well in honors classes as regular as the curriculum was almost identical. The only difference was that students in his classes didn’t look like him anymore.

Madero believes that the change in the English department will help all students feel more confident in their academic careers.

“I believe that this change, the change that is happening in my English department right now, is SMHS telling all of their incoming students, no matter their race, no matter their gender, no matter their ethnic background, we believe in all of you and you all have what it takes to succeed in high school, college and beyond,” Madero said.

Malala Yousafzai a ‘distinguished speaker’ Youngest Nobel recipient to appear at Saban Theatre

Even with these accomplishments, Yousafzai does not consider herself extraordinary.

That is “simply Malala,” as she would describe herself.

Born on July 12, 1997, in

Mingora, Pakistan, Yousafzai was enrolled in her father’s school in Pakistan at the age of 4.

Truly her father’s daughter, while other children were playing with toys, Yousafzai fantasized about giving lectures. Her father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, is a Pakistani educator, activist, and humanitarian who established a

thriving school in their rural home in Swat Valley.

Inspired by her father’s activism, Yousafzai began her campaign for girls’ education at age eleven with her anonymous blog for the BBC, “Diary of a Pakistani Schoolgirl,” about life under the Taliban.

She soon began advocating publicly for girls’ education and would join her father on his visits to neighboring villages to recruit for the school.

While he spoke to the men, she would speak to the women. Their crusade was the subject of a New York Times short documentary in 2009.

Independently, Yousafzai began attracting international media attention and awards. Due to her increased prominence, in October 2012, she was shot in the head on her way home from school by a terrorist. Not only did she survive that horrific attack, but she also did not let that act of violence deter her from her mission.

From her new home in England, she continued speaking up for the young girls. After months of surgery, she co-founded the Malala Fund to continue her campaign to see all girls in school.

A year later, in December 2014, Yousafzai received the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work for education and equality at just 17 years old.

She graduated from Oxford University with a degree in philosophy, politics and economics in 2020. Her best-selling memoir, “I Am Malala,” has been translated into more than 40 languages.

“All the propaganda posters are original and I just wanted the atmosphere that’s from that period,” Li said. “That’s what I want to show people is where I grew up. I grew up in a hard time, but it’s also a sweet time and I think for everyone, childhood has very fond memories. But I also have very sad memories and we have been through very harsh times.”

Food and cooking have always been a major part of Li’s life.

He remembered when he was 12 years old back in 1976 when the Cultural Revolution was ending and Chairman Mao Zedong died, Li would cook lunch for his parents and his friends.

When he was 14, he remembers reading a cookbook in his free time.

“I have a very big passion for food,” Li said. “When I opened the restaurant, I really wanted to have more authentic Chinese food.”

Mao’s is open every day for lunch and dinner, and on weekdays customers can enjoy a “Lunch Combination for the Masses” with a choice of entree, steamed rice, salad and spring roll for around $9.50.

Li said that whenever someone comes into the restaurant to apply for a line cook position, the first thing he ask them is to “show me how you make fried rice.”

“Our fried rice doesn’t sound fancy but it’s all in the details, all the skills and all the ingredients we put in there,” Li said. “I want my food to be enjoyed by everyone.”

Owner Jake Li said that even as times change and Venice continues to grow, he still wants

everyone to feel welcome in his restaurant.

“I just want to have good, decent food for everyone and that’s reasonable for every income,” Li said.

Li came to the U.S. in 1992 after teaching at one of China’s top universities. When he came to Los Angeles, he was interested in filmmaking and enrolled in a few classes while working in a restaurant to make ends meet. He did everything

from chopping up meat to making fried rice, and after eight years he decided to open his own restaurant in Venice and has been going strong ever since.

Amplifying Women

Art and history exhibit spotlights role females played in building Westchester

cutting last August, the board decided they would host an exhibit focusing on the influence women have had in Westchester and Playa Vista, and open it in March for National Women’s History Month. Thanks to the generous support of the Woman’s Club of Playa del Rey and the continued encouragement from their president, Margarita Diosomito, through this exhibit the Westchester/Playa Historical Society was able to help raise women’s voices.

The exhibit features original paintings of three artists who captured the history of the community through their art and throughout the exhibit, the Society highlighted (and will continue to highlight) women past and present who have made contributions to the quality of life

The three artists are JoAnn Cowans, Gail Grover and Mary Leighton Thomson. Cruz knew two of the artists personally and had done an oral history with Thomson before she passed away.

Each artist has three pieces in the exhibit for a total of nine paintings and photos.

“What fascinated me was how these three particular artists who lived in the community made the decision to capture the history of the area in one form or another,” Cruz said.

Mary Leighton Thomson Thomson’s family settled in Southern California and she attended Westlake School for Girls and UCLA. As an artist, she painted landscapes, seascapes, local genre scenes, still lifes, figures and portrait work. As a historian, she explored the life of the native Americans and the then-contemporary life of a beach community.

Born Sept. 12, 1923, she died on April 12, 2004. She was the author and illustrator of “The Secret of Smuggler’s Cove,” a book that Cruz was able to find one of the last surviving copies of and plans to digitize it for the Society.

One of her pieces of art, “Summer Solstice,” sold more than 800 copies and others of her art can be found throughout the community. She loved the Ballona wetlands and often painted there, capturing scenes and wildlife.

Gail Grover Grover spent her early childhood in Atlanta, moving to Southern California in 1944 with her family. She grew up in Westchester, where she attended elementary and high school, later attending Santa Monica College.

Her father-in-law introduced her to various photo processes, which launched a life-long interest in photography.

Her photos would eventually be published in Aperture Magazine.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, she started oil painting.

“Her real desire and ambition was to photograph,” Cruz said.

“But she also had this sort of whimsical slant about her. She would take historical landmarks and do a theme of it—like, the theme might be science fiction movies. She put all these characters from science fiction around

In the early 1960s, she began painting the Venice oil fields as they were being dismantled concurrent with the construction of Marina del Rey. Where other people saw eyesores, Cowans saw abstract sculptures, sources of magnificent energy and vitality.

At the time, oil fields were common because anyone who owned a property could put an oil derrick on it. But in the late 1960s and 1970s they started to dissemble them. Of the three artists in the exhibition, she is the only one who is still alive.

“The way she does the treatment with colors and shadows is just really amazing stuff,” Cruz said.

“We wanted to make sure that they were also featured as part of the exhibit,” Cruz said of the six women they featured for the first half of the exhibit.

On April 24, they changed out and are putting up six more women who are currently contributing to the community.

“We want to feature both—the pioneers and the new pioneers,” Cruz said.

Since the exhibit opened on March 20, Cruz said the art has become a gateway to talking about the history of the community with patrons who pass through. They enjoy the variety of art, but then they start asking questions.

“It gives us an opportunity to explain the history,” Cruz said.

“Not only of the art and the artists, but also of the influential women and what they did to enhance our community. It’s been really great.”

He said visitors have been spending 20 to 45 minutes at the exhibition, reading about the artists and taking in the art.

Starting on April 24, they also began to show the video that originally influenced Cruz to have the exhibition along with a song called, “Put a Woman in Charge.”

“I think when people see women’s voices, it will trigger a lot of conversation with them,” Cruz said. “We’ve just gone through five years of just dealing with misogynistic leadership and I just don’t know of any other way to educate or change minds than putting things out in front of people and saying, ‘Take a look.’”

By Bridgette M. Redman hen it comes to telling the stories of Westchester’s history, Marcelo Cruz wanted to make sure that the voices of women were heard.

Cruz, a board member of the Westchester/Playa Historical Society and curator of the exhibition “Celebrating Women,” which runs through May 15, was inspired by a video he watched called “Women’s Voices.”

“It was a really powerful piece about women’s voices and looking at the inequality of it all,” Cruz said. “I’m wondering why at this stage in history we’re still dealing with it. It really struck a chord with me and I thought if I ever get a chance to do something where I can celebrate women, I definitely want to do that.”

Grover was also fascinated with aircraft. Another time she went out to the first hangar built at LAX and did a whimsical treatment of elements of aviation from stealth bombers to Zeppelins to biplanes.

“She managed to capture historical landmarks and give them a different, more entertaining, more whimsical approach to it, which I thought was really fun and very colorful,” Cruz said.

Leaving Russia

Westside Ballet alum Adrian Blake Mitchell and his partner, Andrea Laššáková, recently fled Russia with their dog after the invasion of Ukraine. back and forth between there and the States.

“It was going to be a second home, a place where we went back often,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell began his serious ballet training at the age of 14 with Yuri Grigoriev and at Westside Ballet with its founder Yvonne Mounsey. He found them when he decided he wanted to be more disciplined and find a good school that could lay the groundwork for a professional career.

“I’d heard about Westside because I knew that they had a lot of great alumni,” Mitchell said. “I mean, if you look at it, you’d be shocked. There’s probably no school in the whole country that has an alumni list like Westside because so many young dancers started their careers and began to love ballet there.”

In 2014, he moved to Russia and began dancing with major companies there. The Mikhailovsky Ballet is one of the last imperial theaters of Russian. There, Mitchell performed such roles as Tybalt in “Romeo and Juliet,” Espada in “Don Quixote, and Von Rothbart in “Swan Lake.” He’s partnered with world-class ballerinas and been featured in Vogue Paris.

Mitchell hopes that people will not turn their backs on all Russian artists just because of the war.

“It’s important to us to say that so many of the beautiful Russian people that we’ve come across are so against the war and just don’t feel safe speaking out,” Mitchell said. “They don’t feel safe themselves or that their families are safe if they speak out. You can’t just say all Russian artists are bad. It’s not the case. There are a few, or maybe even one person, who is doing this and we shouldn’t take it out on the Russian people themselves.”

However, he said he also follows the news and is continually shocked by what is happening in Ukraine and knows that there have to be some sort of consequences, a way that it can be stopped.

“I’m so blessed,” Mitchell said.

“Despite how scary it was, how harrowing, compared to the people in Ukraine, my experience has been like a piece of cake. It’s been nothing compared to what they are going through.”

He hopes that someday it will be possible to return to Russia and for it to be the place that it was becoming, not the place that it is under the current regime.

“I’m hoping that after this all

ends, we might see a better Russia,” Mitchell said. “That it will be able to improve and somehow resolve all of this. It was just going in such a great direction, becoming so international. On the street, you heard various languages, different nationalities and races. I had friends from all over the world in Russia. It was all becoming very Western and seemingly democratic. So I’m hoping it can go back in that direction, because it is very sad to see how far it’s gone. But I won’t go back to Russia until we’ve seen major changes in what’s happening now.”

Due to popular demand, Mitchell and his partner are now performing at Westside Ballet on Mother’s Day weekend on Saturday and Sunday, with a champagne reception for Mother’s Day and an encore of the “New Horizons” Spring Performance.

Mitchell will also perform with Womack in “Spring Waters” on Saturday and in Oleg Vinogradov’s “Barber’s Adagio” with Laššáková. Lyrica Woodruff, a celebrated Broadway star (she was Anastasia on Broadway), is performing “Tchai Pas” with guest artist Mate Szentes.

In 2020, Mitchell co-founded a company called “Dance in Color,” in part a response to the calls that summer for racial justice.

“I’m not naturally a very outspoken person on seemingly political or controversial themes,” Mitchell said. “I always felt that having achieved what I have as a Black dancer was

saying it enough. I didn’t need to go out and talk about it. But because of what happened, just the terrible things we saw and that came to light, I felt the need to speak out. A friend of mine and I started hosting things called ‘Black Ballet Talks on Instagram Live.’”

Together they talked about their experiences—the good, the bad, and how change could be made.

Their goal was to help educate young dancers of color. He was joined by Jason Ambrose, who was the first Black faculty member at the San Francisco Ballet School. Then a childhood friend and her husband heard the talks and wanted to create a scholarship fund.

“She wrote me about the scholarship and I was like, let’s do it, but let’s make it something a bit bigger because I think we need to be a vehicle for making change,” Mitchell said. “We started building this foundation and we raised over $40,000 in our first year of operations as a nonprofit.”

They’re distributing the money to young dancers around the country. They’ve also been celebrating famous Black dancers and educators, holding lectures, providing stipends an d even buying pointe shoes for dancers who need them. Now that Mitchell is back in the States and living in Playa Vista, he will be focusing more on that as well as continuing to teach and dance for Westside Ballet.

By Bridgette M. Redman or Adrian Blake Mitchell, a former dancer at Westside Ballet, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine moved up his plans to leave the country.

The first man of color to graduate from Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, Mitchell and his partner, Andrea Laššáková, had been living in St. Petersburg, where they were both performing principal roles in the Mikhailovsky Ballet Company.

While they knew the time was coming when they were going to have to return to the States, they woke up the morning of Feb. 24 to the news of the invasion and realized they had to leave immediately. However, leaving would prove to be a challenge.

Mitchell, his partner and Joy Womack all fled Russia in February. In the weeks leading up to the performance, he has shared his harrowing story about trying to get out.

On the morning of Feb. 24, everything changed. With talk of martial law and Americans being in danger, they knew they needed to leave the country right away.

“I called my mother saying we needed to book tickets immediately,” Mitchell said. “We booked tickets and then they were canceled about two or three days later, so we had to find other ways to get out of Russia.”

They looked into taking a train, but tickets were available only for Russians and Finns. As an American and a Slovakian, neither qualified. The next option was looking into a bus, but they wouldn’t be able to take their dog on the seven-hour bus ride and they kept hearing rumors about people getting turned around at the border after the bus ride.

Their only remaining option was to take a car service—the Russian equivalent of Uber—to the border with Estonia and then walk across with their luggage.

In the 48 hours they had, they sold a bunch of their things to their friends, shipped some items home and packed four suitcases for them to carry. Then they went to the bank to get all their cash out.

Should You Use a HELOC for a Renovation?

A lot of people are thinking about home renovations right now. You have different options to pay for these projects if you’re not going to pay in cash. One option is a Home Equity Line of Credit or HELOC. How Does a HELOC Work?

With a HELOC, you’re spending in a way that’s similar to a credit card. You borrow up to a certain limit as defined by your lender. Then, you pay back whatever you borrow with interest. You can withdraw and make payments on whatever basis works best for you.

A lender gives you a draw period, which is the time you can withdraw money. When your draw period is ended, you may be able to renew the credit line.

If you don’t or can’t renew, you pay the outstanding balance either all at one time, or you do so over a repayment period.

HELOC lengths can run as long as 30 years.

The benefits of a HELOC and flexible repayment include the fact that you only borrow what you need, and many have no fees. The interest on a HELOC might be deductible if you use your funds for home improvements.

What Are the Risks?

While HELOCs can work well for funding a renovation, there are possible risks to be aware of before you borrow.

Since your home is your collateral, if you don’t make the payments, you could lose your home. Typically a lender will try to protect against this by limiting borrowing amounts, but it’s still a big consideration.

A lender can also freeze a credit line or reduce it. You’ll only see this usually if you haven’t made your payments or your home’s equity changes, but it’s

something to think about.

The interest rates on a HELOC are variable, and they’re tied to the prime rate. If there are changes in the market, you may end up paying more so that uncertainty may not be ideal.

How Does a HELOC Compare to a Home Equity Loan?

A home equity loan is another financial product often used to fund renovations and home projects.

A home equity loan also involves borrowing against the equity in your home, which is used as collateral.

A home equity loan differs from a HELOC because it’s a lump-sum loan rather than a revolving line of credit.

You pay the loan back over its life plus interest, and you make those payments based on a set schedule.

Most home equity loans have a fixed interest rate, which alleviates the worry of fluctuating market conditions impacting interest rates

When is a HELOC the Right Choice?

AIf you’re deciding between a HELOC and a home equity loan, the loan might be better if you’re certain of the cost of your project. If you’re comfortable with a fixed monthly payment, a home equity loan could be the better option.

On the other hand, a HELOC might be right if you want a lot of flexibility in how much you borrow. Maybe you’re not sure about the scope of your project or what your budget will be.

The biggest differentiators between the two will come down to first, flexibility, and second, certainty. If you want flexibility, consider a HELOC. If you want certainty, think about a home equity loan.
