Lisa Phillips’ complaint that poll workers “looked over her printed ballot against her wishes”

was likely due to assisting her input into the new voting machine. Poll workers simply aren’t interested in viewing her choices. After processing hundreds upon hundreds of ballots, we don’t care who you voted for. Trust me.

We poll workers earn $6.66 an hour for a very challenging Super Tuesday, less than half minimum wage. Believe me, we don’t do it for the money. We do it with poise, discretion and diplomacy right to the very last voter. Lunch, breaks and any other non-essential functions are simply not allowed when the voter line stretches snake-like around the building, a tsunami of eager participants in the election process. We’re so glad to see you!

The “ballot marking device,” as they are called, allows voters to not touch their paper ballot once inserted. Reviewing choices at the very end do not require handling the ballet — only visually scanning it. Think of it as an easy-to-read ATM. We repeat these simple instructions countless times a day to no avail.

All in all, what an honor to be part of this noble experience. Many have died to ensure our right to a secret ballot. Let me do my part to continue this tradition for many years to come.

However, there was no mention about a healthy person contracting the virus by TALKING to an infected person within 3 feet. At first, I thought FAKE NEWS, but on a recent NBC national news broadcast of a Pentagon news

conference, the reporters were standing 3 feet apart from each other. OMG I thought! What does the Pentagon know that we don’t know!

In the meantime some common sense advice... When possible, individuals should talk to friends, family, business associates, hospitality industry persons, etc. from 3 feet away. At least till LA officials tells how widespread this virus is in our community.

I hope the next shortage we have will be on tape measurers.

Ripple Effect Westside small businesses are struggling and finding innovative ways to pivot amid COVID-19 restrictions

By Kellie Chudzinski Small businesses across the city are feeling the effects of Los Angeles County’s “Safer at Home” measures.

New restrictions by county and city health officials have closed non-essential businesses in an attempt to keep residents at home and limit the spread of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus, as the number of deaths and cases in the county rises daily.

Dine-in only restaurants, bars, hair salons, gyms, movie theaters, malls, and some retail stores, among others, have closed.

Businesses on typically packed strips including the Venice Boardwalk and Abbot Kinney Boulevard, as well as those all around Los Angeles, are closing and those remaining open are feeling the constraints.

Though the Safer at Home order officially went into effect on March 19 and will be in place until April 19, businesses started feeling a squeeze weeks ago.

Hair and nail salons were among new businesses in mandated closures announced Sunday. Mindy Kim, owner of Nails by Olivia in Marina del Rey, closed before the official

“At this point, it was costing us more to stay open,” says Kim. Shannon Tackett, a stylist formerly at Abbot Kinney’s Salon 1636, who saw clients canceling weeks before St. Patrick’s Day, knew she wouldn’t be able to afford her station at the salon.

Tackett made the difficult decision to leave the shop, though she is still offering clients

services on a case-by-case basis in their homes or her Venice penthouse — where she hopes to open a business called The Salon Sanctuary after the crisis — though she will be taking precautions to not spread or get the virus by wearing gloves and masks for now.

“I’m doing my best to keep my focus,” she says. “I believe what we focus on grows. So I’m doing my best to keep my focus in a creative forward-moving place.”

Tackett expects if the closures of salons span a significant time period it will drive stylists to other professions and will have those in the industry innovating on their own as she is working to do now.

Restaurants, and hospitality in general, have so far been deemed an essential business, as long as they serve food but only for delivery, pickup or take-out. In a letter sent to President Trump on March 18, the National Restaurant Association estimated the industry will lose $225 million in revenue over three months and five to seven million jobs.

Mayly Tao, owner of the 24/7 DK’s Donuts & Bakery in Santa Monica, and delivery-only Donut Princess, has been working to find new and creative ways to drive in businesses.

Tao says she noticed the change in foot traffic and orders weeks before the local and statewide orders started to rain in.

For Tao, DK’s is a family business, opened in the early ’80s by her parents who settled in L.A. from Cambodia and passed the business on to her. A staple in the community, the doughnut shop has catered St. John’s hospital

cafeteria for nearly 25-years and had reoccurring orders for New York Bagel & Deli, among other cafes, and large companies in the area including Hulu, Amazon, and its subsidiary Ring.

Earlier in the month, as concern around the novel coronavirus grew, companies slowly started sending employees to work from home, and on the front lines hospitals began preparing for heightened hygiene concerns.

When St. John’s canceled its order, Tao took notice.

“Almost all of the accounts are canceled,” Tao now says. “And that’s a huge hit on the business.”

To stay up and running, she created a grocery store at DK’s, selling staples such as milk, eggs, bread and a selection of vegetables, open around the clock.

She has also created DK’s Secret Sandwich Shop Menu on Uber Eats, and has made delivery available 24/7 on multiple food delivery apps. If a customer is outside of the app’s delivery range, Tao will take orders via email and deliver them herself. Tao is also encouraging residents to support local shops, and buy gift cards that supports businesses now and

Humble Potato’s Eric Ong says government relief aid isn’t going far enough to save small businesses like his shoppers can use them later.

“I mean, when your family business like this has been opened since 1981,” Tao says. “I will literally do anything, I will work at any hours necessary to make sure that we will move forward in the future.”

Eric Ong, owner of Humble Potato in Culver City, Mee and Greet in Palms and MVP in Westchester, has banded together with other small business owners in the hospitality industry to petition Gov. Gavin Newsom “to plea for relief and support at the local, state and federal level.”

“This is a once in a lifetime type of situation,” Ong says. “I’m just trying my best to make sure that we are as proactive as we can be.”

He felt small businesses were “forgotten” in the initial discussions of a stimulus package, as owners were encouraged to take out low-interest loans with SBA or the city of Los Angeles’ microloan program, though both have caps that he said would barely cover one of his payrolls.

President Trump signed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act on the 18th that allocated roughly $8 billion for COVID-19

prevention, preparation and response efforts, with some new expectations and tax breaks for small businesses, but Ong is still pushing for relief.

“It’s just crazy [that] somebody would take out a loan in this situation and go into debt,” Ong says. “We need grants here, we need cash bailouts in the sense that inject into the business.”

Included in the aid package, going into effect April 2, were requirements that businesses with less than 500 employees provide up to 10 days of paid sick leave for those affected by the disease, and partial sick leave for up to 10 days to take care of an affected family member. And with the new expectations, those businesses will also receive tax credits and payroll tax relief to offset the costs of the sick leave.

Christina Davis, president and CEO of the LAX Chamber of Commerce, is working to provide her nearly 600 members with resources — from webinars to tech training — to keep their businesses running. She is encouraging owners to pivot when possible and embrace the digital age, taking their companies online.

She believes those that are able to “reinvent themselves” and use new technologies will “come out of this stronger.”

“Some businesses will survive and thrive and they’ll adapt and some businesses will not,” she adds. “Every day is a new adventure for them trying to figure out how to weather the storm.”

As businesses that remain open continue to struggle without their typical customer flow, Davis encourages support of local businesses.

“When you can shop local, shop local,” she says. “So many of these businesses continue to reinvest in our communities.

And if we can start at a very local level, it will just ripple out from there.”

Students and teachers are mostly using the Zoom app to connect with each other on the internet, but they are vetting many other apps as well.

As effective as this type of learning can be, Pelcyger doesn’t think online education should ever replace face-toface learning for one very important reason.

“The key to all learning is human relationships. We have three core values in our school: competence, confidence and connection,” he says.

PS1 emphasizes connection because, “Everything in life is based on relationships and interrelationships ” says Pelcyger. “When you’re doing distance learning, you have to figure out ways to make that continue. We’re in these uncertain times and we want to provide assuredness and stability. People count on us for the relationship we have, we have to figure out how to maintain that relationship from a distance. We’re not just doing distance learning; we are establishing and sustaining a distance learning community.”

By Shanee Edwards COVID-19, more commonly referred to as coronavirus, is disrupting life as we know it and that includes how our children learn. The Los Angeles Unified School District has closed all K–12 schools until at least May 1, with even Governor Gavin Newsom expecting that California schools won’t reopen before summer break. Local independent and private schools, such as Westside Neighborhood School in Del Rey and Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences in Santa Monica, have also shifted classes online for the time being.

For parents, that means they will be leading the education charge at home, as L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti has urged everyone to stay “safer at home.” So what exactly does that mean for students? It depends on each individual school and each individual family.

Zsuzsi Steiner (an Argonaut contributing photographer) is a mom with two boys, ages 6 and 9.

They are students at WISH Charter Elementary in Westchester (wishcharter.org), where Steiner also teaches an elective class in “Survival Arts.” WISH provides a Chromebook laptop computer to every student and has implemented a very detailed online learning program that allows kids to see their teachers on screen and learn together in real time.

“We started virtual learning last Monday,” says Steiner. “The teachers have been opening up the classrooms a few minutes early so the students can hear each other.

You hear this wonderful, excited children-babble. They play music in the mornings before school and connect. When the teacher comes on, she’s able to mute all the kids’ microphones and kids just hear the teacher. Then she begins the first lesson.”

For the first few days, the teachers were at the school, in their actual classrooms.

“It was really helpful for my Kindergartner to see his teacher in his classroom,” says Steiner. “His face just lit it, saying, ‘Oh, there’s Mr. Gleason!’”

By having the regular school schedule continue, parents like Steiner have a window to get their own work done.

Which is just as well as my driver’s license was revoked many years ago. Due to cataracts, I just barely failed the eye test.

Also, I was hitting too many utility poles at high speeds. In addition, it’s not my fault all the best parking spots are conveniently on the freeway. So I’ll be making the conscientious and socially responsible decision to stay put for the time being. Plus I’m too terrified of my bacteriaaddled doorknob to leave the house anyway.

Optimism abounds. And throughout we’re just downright disoriented from the abundance of verifiable comfort-mongering news available online and spread word-of-mouth. Zen Garden Safe Place for Youth’s Community Garden cultivates jobs and tranquility for local homeless youth

By Gary Walker Talk to anyone who spends time in a garden and almost invariably they mention how it makes them feel relaxed, serene — even safe.

In Safe Place for Youth’s Community Garden on Venice Boulevard, butterflies and pollinators dance among the plants and fruit trees just in front of literary arts center Beyond Baroque, where practically every square inch is covered in green. Rich, black topsoil surround some of the plants like an organic sentry, its slightly

pungent smell rising with the ocean breeze on a February day.

For Althena Gelfand, working in Safe Place for Youth’s Community Garden as an intern has been a way to connect with nature.

“I really like working with plants, getting my hands dirty.

It’s really therapeutic,” says Gelfand, 21.

While SPY’s garden internship program is currently in hibernation as the world collectively pauses to combat the spread of COVID-19, the homeless services nonprofit’s patch of

green space has served for the last two years as a refuge for local youth from a chaotic world.

“There’s no doubt that we will resume and absolutely grow the internship program as soon as it’s safe to,” says SPY Garden Manager Emily Alford. “We’re all altering our lifestyles to care for the community at large.

That is a theme that has carried to the garden.”

Intern Trevion Beck says he wishes there were more spaces like the SPY garden.

“It’s a safe place for people to spend time relaxing, admiring

butterflies, and smelling fragrant herbs like lavender and rosemary,” Beck says.

“Green space [is] a mental health benefit,” says Alford.

“Some people innately and easily gravitate toward the garden because they instantly feel that it’s calming and anxiety reducing. But there are others who have virtually no experience with gardening but still are able to tap into that deeper, innate place. … I’m blown away by the amount of feedback that I hear from the youth who come out here and put their hands in

the soil who tell me how calming that is for them.”

Former SPY intern Taris Auberry says the garden represents a sense of renewal, a place where she feels rejuvenated.

“When I feel weak, and after I work here in the soil and with these plants, it gives me strength. It’s very grounding and it keeps you in the present moment,” says Auberry, 24.

Auberry, Beck and Gelfand are among SPY’s current and former clients who have discovered an inherent passion for urban gardening during their

internships. While she did not intern at the garden, SPY Garden Community Coordinator Natalie Flores Blackner sees herself in many of the interns.

“Getting involved in gardening was the best thing that ever happened to me,” says Flores Blackner, who admits to being a “lost youth” in her early 20s.

“We’ve created incredible topsoil that was not here before.

Through mulching and composting we’ve created a great fertilizer and that is helping our community get fertilized. They are the fruits and the results of this wonderful fertilization.” ___ Founded in 2011 by Executive Director Alison Hurst and a group of volunteers, SPY has grown from an all-volunteer group into a full-service youth organization with paid staff members and now works to house youths in Venice as well as put them to work through various programs, including the Community Garden.

The garden yields a bounty of fruits and vegetables: arugula, radishes, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, cabbage, baby carrots,

beets, fruit trees, figs, mulberries, avocados, peaches, pears, passion fruit, lemons and sugarcane. And much of what is harvested is sold at SPY and consumed by its staff and clients.

Once owned by the environmental and soil regeneration nonprofit Kiss the Ground, the SPY Community Garden is not just a place to mellow out and get into a Zen-like state.

In 2018, the garden produced 269 pounds of fresh produce, which is eaten at SPY and sold at the SPY Youth Farmers Market and other venues. Last year, the SPY Community Garden Farmstand at the youth market earned $1,347 in revenue.

“We try not to let anything go to waste. Carrot top pesto is sold at our stands and we always sell out of it,” says Alford.

In 2019, 60% of garden-based interns gained jobs in industries directly related to work performed at the garden. Over the last two years, youth interns have found jobs in landscaping, social services, and produce management in grocery stores and restaurants.

“We’re igniting entrepreneurship and we’re igniting the skills

that they have within them that can be harnessed and used in the real world,” says Hurst, a former landscape consultant.

One of those youths is Allison Arnott, who was a SPY Community Garden intern in 2017.

Working in the garden has given her an added appreciation for organic produce now that she has worked in that industry.

Since her internship, she has worked as a cash manager at the organic produce store Rainbow Acres in Culver City.

“Working here feels really aligned with some of the things that I really like, such as working for a store that provides healthy, natural food instead of for some corporation that doesn’t care about sustainability,” says Arnott, 24. “It was such a wonderful feeling of taking care of something and then seeing it grow.” ___ Once a week Alford harvests greens from the garden for a large salad with other garden ingredients that is served at the SPY Access Center. Lunch is cooked whenever interns come to work at the garden, which

gives them an opportunity to actually eat what they spend hours cultivating.

“We’re trying to grow as much food as possible in order to feed as many people possible,” says Alford.

In an effort to bridge the current widening divide between opponents of housing homeless foster youth and adults and those who support more housing, SPY hosts a community meal at the garden four times a year where anyone — regardless of their positions on local politics — is welcome to come and enjoy the garden’s bounty.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for people from all sides to come together to break bread. Our youth can show off the produce that they’ve grown and we think it’s a great way to humanize all sides,” Alford says.

“It’s almost like this oasis in the major crisis where the unhoused community and the housed community can come together to hear conversations,” Hurst adds.

Mar Vista resident Susan Klos has visited the garden and when she built her own garden several years ago she hired several SPY teens to work on it. She sees the

garden as a stress-reducing environment as well as a place to grow food in an urban setting.

“It’s a gift to the community.

It’s a wonderful place where you can escape the rat race and relax in a tranquil setting,” says Klos, a member of Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas’ Empowerment Congress Mental Health Committee.

Hurst says she hopes to expand the number of internships as well as the items that she grows in the garden this year. Last year, Supervisor Sheila Kuehl awarded the garden program with a $40,000 grant from her Food for The Soul initiative and SPY is hoping to implement similar funding from a recently awarded grant soon.

“So many of the youth who we provide services to feel that they have nothing to offer because they’ve been told that over and over again,” Hurst says. “So we’re trying to find a way to tap the beauty that is within them.”

‘A Little Bit of Decency’ Students petition LMU after being forced to leave campus without tuition reimbursement amid COVID-19 precautions

By Kellie Chudzinski Thousands of people — among them Loyola Marymount University students, professors and alumni — have signed a petition demanding partial tuition reimbursement, continued payment of students in workstudy programs and accommodations for those who may struggle with online courses.

LMU, which has joined schools across the country in moving classes online and closing on-campus housing as cases of the novel coronavirus continue to rise, is one of the most expensive university’s in the country, charging at least $70,000 a year for tuition, books, housing and food.

In a statement to The Argonaut, LMU Provost Thomas Poon wrote: “LMU has taken extraordinary steps to safeguard our community in response to the outbreak of COVID-19. I am acutely aware of the challenges

LMU has joined universities and colleges across the country in moving classes online and closing on-campus housing to

students as cases of the novel coronavirus climb nationwide.

On March 13, all LMU students who lived on the school’s Westchester campus and in university-owned houses and apartments in Playa del Oro and Park West were notified that they were required to move out by March 22. Case-by-case waivers to stay in university housing would be taken into consideration, according to the notice.

LMU students who lived outside of campus housing would be allowed to stay in the area, though many have been posting their rooms for rent as they also prepare to return to their homes.

LMU officials announced on March 19 that the university would offer “prorated credits or refunds for housing and parking” for the rest of the school year, though neither specific amounts nor balances were released. The notice also said the school will be paying those in the work-study

program, which provides students with on-campus jobs in which paychecks can go directly toward tuition or for personal expenses in a lump sum dispersed in April.

Those funds are based on hours worked before spring break.

That statement also said it was working with unidentified “dining partners” to offer partial credit for meal plans for which students pay in advance. Students have yet to receive information on the refunds, according to multiple students interviewed by The Argonaut.

Universities have not yet been recommended to close by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), though much of California is on a state of lock down, with residents being asked to stay at home and avoid gatherings of more than 10 people.

Dining During a Pandemic Local restaurants use technology, lay-offs and hospital-grade sanitizer to keep their kitchens open

One of the best perks of living on the Westside is the wide array of delicious dining options. But since California Governor Gavin Newsom mandated a statewide closure of dine-in restaurants in response to the COVID-19 virus and the city of Los Angeles has halted restaurants from offering dine-in service, going out for a casual, boozy brunch at Lunetta All Day in Santa Monica isn’t an option right now. Lunetta All Day, like most Westside restaurants, is open for pickup and delivery, but it’s unclear if the shift to a take-out/delivery model alone will garner enough business to sustain most restaurants.

We checked in with some of our favorite eateries to see how they are faring. Most are hopeful they will make it through this time of crisis and all are adapting new safety measures to minimize health risks and follow orders from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).

Restaurateurs are also optimizing technology to make getting your meal as easy (and germ-free) as possible. Some restaurants like Mo’s Place in Playa del Rey and Gulp in Playa Vista are offering to-go cocktails (now legal in California under a temporary measure by the state’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control); others, toilet paper and hand sanitizer to-go.

Some like Playa’s Bacari PdR have turned into temporary pop-up markets, and others like chef Jeremy Fox’s Birdie G’s in Santa Monica have added the option to curbside pickup culinary staples direct from the famed chef’s larder. The City of Santa Monica has even launched an interactive digital map (santamonica.gov/coronavirusresources) to help local in-home diners find restaurants offering to-go/delivery services.

While our local restaurants seem to understand the key to survival is innovation, overall, everyone is worried. Here’s what they had to say.

Taiwanese restaurant Little Fatty, food gallery concept Pop’s Burgers and Shakes, Marina del Rey’s Pizzarito and Westchester’s Benny’s Tacos are doubling down on delivery Christian Gutierrez says now that customers can no longer dine-in, they are seeing drastic financial losses. “We are losing thousands of dollars every day,” he says.

“Our delivery went up a bit but we’re still losing a lot of money.

We’re just staying open to provide for our community and our neighborhood, and so our employees can have money to feed their families.”

Pizzarito N.Y. Pizza by the Slice in Marina del Rey | pizzaritomenu.com Al Caruso has owned and operated Pizzarito in the Marina Marketplace for 36 years. He says, “Some days business is up and some days down, it’s hard to say.” To help drum up business, he’s doing internet promotions and working with the Marina del Rey Visitors Bureau. But he’s also sanitizing to the hilt. “When we get here in the morning, we get out the hospital-grade disinfectant and go through the whole restaurant.” Luckily, he hasn’t had to lay off any

employees. “As long as the government doesn’t shut us down, we’ll be here.”

Mao’s Kitchen in Venice | maoskitchen.com Jake Li, owner of Mao’s for the last 20 years says business is very slow. “I’m very nervous,” says Li. “The pick-up and delivery is a little busier, but the daytime is really slow. We don’t have dine-in so the sales figures have dropped probably 40%.”

But Li says he felt a slowdown back in January, weeks before the Governor banned in-restaurant dining. Because the COVID-19 virus started in China, he thinks people have an unconscious bias against Chinese food. He hopes people realize his food is just as safe and delicious as any other food. “We are Chinese food, but a very American company.”

The Gallery Food Hall at Santa Monica Place | popburgers.com The Gallery eateries in the

Santa Monica Place mall are focused on ramping up delivery, according to John Kolaski, owner of K2 restaurants. They are using a total of eight delivery services, including their own service, SocialEats, specifically for people in Santa Monica. In a twist of fate, they feted their newest eatery Pop’s Burgers and Shakes with a launch party just days before the state and city’s directives to halt dine-in service.

“It’s actually been our most popular concept so far,” says Kolaski.

Kolaski says they also stocked up on another highly sought-after commodity: “We bought a whole lot of toilet paper so our team doesn’t have to worry here, and we’re selling rolls of toilet paper on our apps to help people not have to leave the house.” All food comes in sealed bags.

Tony P’s Dockside Grill in Marina del Rey | tonyps.com But not all restaurants are trying to ramp up take-out and delivery.

Jack Reck, manager at Tony P’s, says, “We are completely closed.

We have the option to do [take-out and delivery], but we’re not set up for it, it’s not efficient for us. It would not be cost effective.”

Little Fatty in Mar Vista | littlefattyla.com Little Fatty’s manager Pam Stampahar says she had to lay off 80% of her staff and is now focused on take-out and delivery. Luckily, they already had a robust delivery business and have seen an increase on take-out as well. Stampahar says a lot of customers are opting not to use the apps for takeout because they want all the money to go to the restaurant.

Last week, Little Fatty also launched an entire frozen line that seems to be popular with people wanting to stock their freezer. “The dumplings and some of our pasta dishes can be bought in bulk,” she says.

Kidding, obviously. But at least that would end things between you. That’s the right thing to do — as opposed to staying with the guy and using his interest in you as bait to attract the dude you really want.

By the way, it’s probably unrealistic to think the other dude will swoop in, elbow his buddy out of the way, and run off with you. Mate poaching — somebody “stealing” another person’s romantic partner mid-relationship — has likely been a common form of mate acquisition throughout human evolutionary history, explains evolutionary psychologist David Schmitt. However, it has its costs. Schmitt notes that mate poaching can lead to undesirable “social consequences”: violent retribution from the poached person’s partner, damage to one’s reputation (especially for a guy who poaches his buddy’s girl), and exile from one’s social world.

The relationships formed through mate poaching also tend to be less than dreamy. Research by social psychologist Joshua Foster and his colleagues found that “individuals who were poached by their current romantic partners were less committed, less satisfied, and less invested in their relationships” than non-poached relationship partners. The sort of people who let themselves be poached (from their previous relationship into their current one) tended to have a wandering eye — paying “more attention to romantic alternatives” and cheating more often than the non-poached.

The moment you realize you’ve got the lukewarms for a guy is the moment you should break it off and move on. You’ll be that much further along in meeting somebody who might be right for you.

Plus, your sharing any more than a date or two (and a chaste kiss, no nudity) with a guy you’re not that into is likely to make his dude friends classify you as off-limits. What makes it the right time is “readiness,” which Sills calls “an internal process that acts as a psychological catalyst for commitment.” This is readiness for true partnership — for intimacy (and the vulnerability it requires). It “does not mean being without

anxiety or ambivalence,” Sills explains.

But “readiness is a state of mind, an attitude of approach that helps you to push past the barriers created by these feelings.”

Whatever the reason for the guy’s rush to put up picket fencing, it’s important to take things slowly. (You might give it a year or more before you make any big moves together.) Research by psychologist Michael I. Norton and his colleagues suggests that the more budding romantic partners learn about each other, the more they see dissimilarities — clashes between them — and the less satisfied they can become with each other and the relationship.

Do something people newly in love (or at least newly in hots) typically don’t do: Seek out the clashes between you — all the areas in which you glaringly don’t want the same things, have habits that grate on each other, etc. If that stuff isn’t enough to break you up, tell him you two might have a reasonable chance of going the distance together — though not if he keeps talking to your womb on dates: “I’d like you to give me a male heir. How’s Friday?”

and first-year student Raymond CangKimVo, penned the online petition on Change.org, which also asks for tuition to be lowered after the university’s March 13 eviction announcement. As of press time, the petition had almost reached its goal of 5000 signatures. “[Students] are all in such bad shape right now,” Vo said of posting the petition. “We’re all so displaced. We’re really just asking for a little bit of decency.”

“As someone who has just worked so hard to pay these costs just to be able to stay here and then see that we’re getting

evicted, classes are being moved online, that we’re essentially not going to have the same quality of education we paid for, it just really upsets me that they haven’t even said that they are intending to refund us,” said Yakamoto, adding she has struggled to cover tuition on her own.

Undergrad tuition and fees at LMU are set at $50,252 for the current school year. That does not include room and board at $15,000 and parking costing anywhere from $800 to $1,200, as reported on the school’s website.

Current film majors and students enrolled in performing arts programs wrote that the new

online education format was not conducive to success with their studies. They said they often relied on facilities and equipment provided by the university. They believe a partial tuition credit is warranted.

“As a senior art major, I was depending on having access to studio facilities in order to complete my portfolio and secure a job position post-graduation,” Aurora Schnurr wrote.

“Now, without access to said facilities and without the ability to install my thesis in the TPK art gallery, I have not only been robbed of my education, but my future job prospects, and LMU has done absolutely nothing to

remedy that.”

Lina Larson adds: “I’m not paying $70k to not use the edit rooms for post-production on my thesis film.”

The university, and students who created the petition, have set up separate relief funds for students having difficulty moving or having other challenges in complying with the school’s directions.

LMU’s Lion Emergency Fund, for instance, has $20,000, according to the web page for the fund.

“Hundreds of students need your help; some of them are choosing between buying their next few meals or paying for their moving expenses. We

should never allow Lions to make that choice,” states the site. (The school’s mascot is Iggy the Lion.)

Student Andrea Villegas Ospina of Bogota, Colombia, returned home after three flights in four days to make it there before the Bogota airport shut down due to the pandemic.

She felt students weren’t prioritized by LMU and that international students were forced into a situation possibly exposing them to the virus, exacerbated by “jetlag, and financial distress, and still being expected to show up to class [online] with different schedules, fulfill assignments on time, and continue to excel at school.”
