L E T T E R S lines on the sidewalks during busy periods, with waiters shuttling back and forth through the sidewalk passersby while scurrying from the parklets to the kitchens and bars inside. Traffic lanes run through the center, bifurcating the piazza and spoiling the gentle outdoor ambience.

A different model would barricade all but emergency and service vehicles from entering Main Street (except during an early morning interval for restaurant deliveries). The center emergency access lane would be reserved for pedestrians, entertainment, slow speed scooters and bike riders when not needed for emergency access during the rest of the time.

Restaurant seating would assemble on the sidewalks, spilling onto designated roadway pavement spaces for the establishments that require additional room for the socially distanced capacity they require to operate successfully. Shuttle and pedicab service from the beach parking lots during peak hours for those not into walking could more than replace lost parking spaces from these Main Street conversions.

Preferred parking zones could reduce resultant increased pressure on nearby residential streets.

And there are other alternatives, one of which seeks to merge a time sharing compromise between those two.

As we weigh alternatives, we should do so with projected timelines in mind. If we feel certain the pandemic will blow over in the next few months, then temporary fixes would be more acceptable. If we think COVID-19 and its mutations will require transmission mitigations until Christmas or beyond, then we’ll need a more sustainable model — one that might require greater investment and larger sacrifices to compromise on more impactful plans.

(Like what would Santa Monica have to build in the next decade to replace private motorized vehicles as the primary model of short distance urban transportation?)

Without detailed analysis of alternatives and then gathering the stakeholders to negotiate costs and benefits to each — what chance do we have at finding the compromises we’ll need to

Let’s fix Main Street Editor: I think it will better to modify Main Street now so it can survive the present and thrive in the future. That would be better than to let it fail altogether, then afterward try to resurrect the “Good Old Main Street” from the ashes after a complete crash.

We could make it easier to decide what must be done if we focused on accurately modeling the details of the various plans and projecting their futures.

Imagine if before the present alfresco was laid out, the designers had polled the individual restaurant bars to ask what would be the minimum number of outside seats they each would need to continue service without losing money. Easily noticed, the parklet areas arranged with conforming social distancing could not come close to serving that number. (The city is mum on how many seats they think their plan will provide. I’ve looked everywhere for a seating layout chart as evidence they did this calculation.)

With lockdown and other pandemic restrictions, lots of pressure has built up in nearly all aspects of modern life. Tiny Homes Motion Approved The new project aims to get homeless people off the streets

By Haley Beyer On Feb. 1, the Venice Neighborhood Council (VNC) met for the Joint VNC Board & DFC Focus on Children agenda regarding homelessness in the surrounding area. This issue is associated with the Diversity and Focus on Children sections of the motion’s mission statement.

The Diversity section states, “Consider strategies that encourage and facilitate realistic recommendations designed to increase economic diversity, including affordable housing, etc.”

The Focus on Children section states, “Consider strategies that promote and expand opportunities for children to experience direct meaningful involvement in all aspects of the social and economic and cultural activities of the Venice Community. Include this Focus on Children as an integral part of the consideration of strategies in all of the below Vision Goals.”

The first call to action was changing the word “resides” to “sleep” within the motion to align with the federal court’s focus. The appeals court decided that no one could be penalized or fined for

specifically sleeping on the sidewalks of the city because it would be cruel and unusual punishment to remove homeless individuals from the sidewalks without having another location for them to move to.

Because of this, VNC member Joe Murphy and his brother Frank, who runs the homeless committee in LA, founded the motion of integrating Tiny Homes in the Los Angeles area beginning in April.

The Tiny Homes motion offers to provide people who are sleeping on the streets and sidewalks of the city with a warmer, cleaner and safer place to stay. The 64-foot tiny homes would provide individuals with a bathroom, offer privacy, and lastly, keep them out of the

residential and public areas and in their own village made up of tiny homes on unused vacant lots.

The project would give these individuals “a sense of ownership and security… contribute to the mental stability homeless people need to move forward and therefore appeal to and attract homeless people who feel otherwise alienated by other programs” while they wait for permanent housing options.

Member Paul Davis made the motion and member Regan Kibble seconded the motion. After back-and-forth conversation for clear understanding, there was no argument from other members in denial of the VNC Board adopting the motion. The VNC Board supports the concept of the Tiny Homes project and requests that

Mike Bonin, Los Angeles Councilmember from District 11, take the necessary steps to enable the city to “emulate the Riverside, California and Seattle, Washington examples in providing Tiny Homes to homeless people to the benefit of the Los Angeles Venice Neighborhood Council area and areas in the City of Los Angeles.”

This would include Seattle’s citizen-driven model of nonprofit enterprises with citizen participation. The motion also requests that Bonin “explore the impact of the implementation of such a program on the current federal decisions, which permit homeless people to sleep with their belongings on neighborhood sidewalks and streets, whether or not in vehicles or tents or their equivalents.”

There was also a discussion about the foreseeable problems ahead for Tiny Homes. Some of the other states where Tiny Homes are successful do not have building codes that are as strict as California. Tiny Homes also cost other states more than it would cost California, averaging in at about $12,000 each. Other homes of similar fashion in places like Seattle (or on a closer scale,

Riverside, California) are closer to an average cost of $82,000.

There was a concern from all members of the council that the homeless problem in LA is only going to get worse after COVID-19, which will make it even harder to remain in homes.

There is already a housing shortage in the area, and limited resources during a global pandemic will do nothing but add to this issue.

There are also a devastating number of homeless children in the area, and member Jasmine Carey mentioned Worthy Beyond Purpose as resource.

“Worthy Beyond Purpose is a wonderful nonprofit that teaches meditation and mindfulness, and serves LA kids in person when possible and kids all over the world online,” Carey said.

They hold classes twice daily at 3 and 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

There are events for adults held four times annually. The programming is all donation based and open to the public.

“We purchased Tablet Command after using it in a demonstration mode for a few months,” said Tom Clemo, SMFD chief.

Ultimately, the application has increased our chief officer’s level of accountability of units and personnel assigned to complex, multi-unit incidents.”

Arson and grand theft auto suspect arrested COURTESY OF SANTA MONICA POLICE DEPARTMENT

On Feb. 23 at approximately 2:15 p.m., officers from the Santa Monica Police Department responded to the area of 23rd and Dewey regarding a report of a man trying to set a vehicle on fire.

Details of the call indicate the male was attempting to light an item stuffed in the gas tank of the reporting party’s vehicle. Officers arrived on the scene and were directed to the subject, who was later identified as Alex Omar Aguirre, a 28-year-old Hispanic male from Los Angeles.

Officers saw Aguirre leaning into the car window of a separate vehicle, rummaging through the contents of the car. They noticed the vehicle had smoke emitting from the inside compartment and immediately summoned for the Santa Monica Fire Department.

Aguirre was detained by officers who spoke with him to ascertain the details of this incident, while fire personnel extinguished the burning vehicle. The reporting party told officers that he saw Aguirre trying to pick the lock of his vehicle before he confronted him. He also noticed a burning rag had been stuffed into the filler of the gas tank, and he

The victim watched as the suspect attempted to flee in the vehicle, which he eventually ignited. Aguirre appeared to have trouble starting the car, which he exited before being detained by officers. He was placed under

arrest and transported to the SMPD, where officers discovered he was on parole.

Officers also learned that the second vehicle Aguirre set on fire was an unreported stolen car from LA. Aguirre was booked for Attempt Burglary – 664/459 P.C., Arson – 452(d) P.C., Grand Theft Auto

Recent thefts target elderly women in Santa Monica Santa Monica Police, along with other local agencies, are investigating a series of thefts where the suspects are targeting elderly women walking alone.

In each of the reported incidents in Santa Monica, a female suspect calls out to the victim from a parked car asking for directions or assistance in an effort to get the victim to come close enough to touch or grab them.

The suspect then puts a piece of fake jewelry on the victim while stealthily removing their expensive jewelry before fleeing in a getaway vehicle, which is usually driven by a male suspect.

Two similar incidents near the 500-600 block of Ocean Avenue were reported on Feb. 13 and Feb. 17. Descriptions of three suspects have been provided.

Two of the suspects are female passengers in a vehicle.

The first suspect is Middle Eastern or white with dark brown hair and between 40 to 60 years old.

The second female suspect is described as potentially White with dark hair, she may be wearing a scarf covering her hair and is in her mid-40s. The third suspect is the driver of the vehicle and he is described as a potentially White male with dark hair in his mid-40s.

Support available to low-income seniors through POD program Over 150 senior households experiencing economic hardship are receiving financial assistance through the Preserving Our Diversity (POD) pilot program and additional assistance is available.

The POD program provides financial assistance to very lowincome, long-term Santa senior renters to help cover basic needs like food, health care and transportation.

The Santa Monica City Council approved the $2 million expansion of the program in Summer 2019 to assist a total of 250 to 400 seniors facing financial hardship.

Despite the financial impacts of COVID-19 and reductions to the city budget and staff, the city council continued investments in the POD program recognizing the vulnerability of Santa Monica’s low-income senior community.

The cash-based assistance aims to help households achieve a minimum amount of monthly after-rent income of $700 for a one-person household or $1,225 for a two-person household. To be eligible for the program an individual must be a senior age 65 or older; have lived in a Santa Monica rent-controlled apartment

since before Jan. 1, 2000; have an annual household income less than or equal to $39,450 for a one-person household or $45,050 for a two-person household; and not already be living in a subsidized apartment or participating in a rental voucher program.

“We would like to help more senior households meet their most critical and basic needs, and ask for seniors to apply,” said Community Services Director Andy Agle. “If you have a neighbor or family member who qualifies and would benefit, please help them through the application process.”

The application period will remain open for interested seniors to apply. All qualified applications submitted to the city will be placed on a waitlist. Applicants will then be selected by lotteries for enrollment on a rolling basis over the coming months.

Inspiring Stories Virtual event focuses on connection between small businesses and homelessness

By Alex Hutton “Stories from the Frontline” is a unique opportunity for people associated with homelessness to tell their stories. Whether they have experienced homelessness or worked to end it, their stories inspire strength and perseverance.

On Feb. 10, the 15th installment of the series, “Stories from the Frontline: Small Businesses,” was held in the form of a virtual event that highlighted a handful of small businesses in Los Angeles that do good work in the community.

The event took place on Facebook Live and was a joint production between the organizations “Stories from the Frontline,” Everyone in LA, and Inclusive Action for the City.

The livestream began with an introductory speech by emcee Rudy Espinoza, executive director of Inclusive Action for

the City. In his opening comments, he highlighted the importance of small businesses to society.

“Without small businesses, we can’t have an economy,” Espinoza said.

The main portion of the event consisted of presentations from various small business owners and employees, who showed off their work in a variety of ways.

The first speakers were Larae Cantley, Zondre Johnson and Rhiannon Diaz, who were interviewed by Crissy Yancey of Everyone In LA. Cantley, Johnson and Diaz have all been homeless in the past, and they now lead Lived Experience Life Consulting Co-Op, an organization for cultural change.

“We’ve been impacted by the way that systems leave people harmed,” Cantley said. “We

Additional entrepreneurs and business owners spoke about their own companies. These included Jocelyn Ramirez of Todo Verde, a food business focused on providing healthy, cultural meals to East LA residents; and Tony Jolly of Hot and Cool Cafe, which runs a program that makes meals for seniors.

Urban Voices Project, which creates supportive community spaces with music to bridge vulnerable individuals to a sense of purpose and improved health, also performed “Walk with Me,” a protest song by Maggie Wheeler.

After Jolly, three more speakers from charitable organizations delivered remarks. They were Gabriela Solorzano of Everyone In, Miguel Lugo of Homeboy Industries and Elise Buik of United Way. Each of them discussed their outlet’s mission and work, and the impact they hope to make in society.

“There are a lot of steps in the process of helping someone out of poverty and homelessness, and of course, housing is the first part of that puzzle,” Loranger said. “But having a job is right behind housing because, without the income and security of a job, it’s difficult to find and maintain a

Lugo’s speech was especially noteworthy. He served 18 years in prison and was released in 2015.

Shortly after his release, he went to Homeboy Industries in an effort to turn his life around. He talked about how Homeboy Industries helped him make these changes and now he helps others do the same.

“Here at Homeboy Industries, I’m able to work on my trauma,” Lugo said. “I’m able to work with other people through their trauma.

Here at Homeboy Industries, we are the place that changes your life. This is the place that changed my life.”

Espinoza concluded the event by thanking the participants, organizations and companies that made it possible. He finished by emphasizing the importance of community: “I’m Rudy, and I am your neighbor.”

Community Pantry Volunteers in Westchester are providing food to those in need canned goods (vegetables, meats, soup and fruit), cereal and grains, shelf stable milk, water and healthy snacks (almost anything unperishable).

Sharpe’s neighbor was kind enough to put together 100 personal hygiene kits that will be included as well.

The team behind the Painted Pantry wasn’t expecting to see such a great response to its plea for help.

“I’ve been inspired by the outpouring of donations and people contacting me looking to help, it gives me hope that our ‘better selves’ can prevail,” Sharpe said.

The YMCA will look over the pantry to make sure it is running smoothly by inventorying the stock, providing the location for staging and collecting donations (food and financial). Volunteers called the “Pantry Patrol” will be responsible for keeping the pantry clean and stocked.

Anyone who needs food assistance has full access to the pantry 24/7 to take what they need. As the food and supplies run out, it will be replenished.

If donations start to run low, the Painted Pantry Project team will shop as needed with the support of the Westchester Rotary Club and others, though donations are preferred as the main source of inventory.

By Haley Beyer After seeing a newspaper article about the Fridge Project, a series of communityrun fridges across the city that provided free food to the public, Westchester resident and YMCA board member John Sharpe knew he had to follow suit.

To help combat the growing food insecurity problem in his community, he founded the Painted Pantry Project. He decided against a fridge program because he did not want to include perishable food during his first go-around.

The community pantry officially opened on Feb. 8 and will remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the Westchester Family YMCA. Sharpe began by collecting donations from his friends and community members at his house in January so the pantry would be fully stocked when it opened. Donations are accepted at the YMCA from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday. The team is hoping to partner with other organizations around the community to create more donation sites.

At the opening ceremony, the team celebrated the pantry while following COVID-19 regulations. Instead of cutting a big ribbon, each person in attendance was given a miniature ribbon. They were asked to write messages of unity and hope on the ribbons before tying them on the fence surrounding the pantry.

The only way for the Painted Pantry Project to remain open is with public, Westchester Family YMCA and the Westchester Rotary Club support.

“I truly believe that if we are going to survive as a species, we are going to have to re-communitize and take care of each other,” Sharpe said.

“This project provides a very direct example of the community coming together to help neighbors who are in need during this time of crisis.”

If everything goes as quickly as expected, the Painted Pantry will need more food soon.

On the day of your friend’s birthday, you felt like quite the party animal – if, by “party animal,” we mean “rat lying cold and dead in the corner of the cage.”

Depression gets a bad rap. It can be a terrible, dysfunctional thing when it’s caused by brain abnormalities or persists without end. However, psychiatrist Randolph Nesse explains that human emotions, including the feel bad ones, are psychological programs that evolved to solve recurring mating and survival issues. When you’re mired in frustrating, unrewarding endeavors, symptoms of depression like sadness, hopelessness and fatigue appear to

have a function. They slow you down, plant you on the couch, and force you to rethink and change unworkable situations in your life: dump that jerk, stand up to your boss, fake your death and move to Croatia.

Sadness is also a strong social signal.

When we see someone’s sad, we’re motivated to comfort them (or at least cut them some slack). In an ancestral environment, countless centuries before apartments with locking doors, your friends would have noticed you were depressed. In a modern environment, suffering often remains hidden.

In other words, it’s possible this woman and your other girlfriends assumed you were socially sloppy, inconsiderate and a bad friend – instead of understanding that you were a friend in need.

Take stock of the girlfriends around you and figure out whom you can trust to be real friends to you: those you can show who you really are, including all the sobby parts. Friends like that will mop up for you socially (in tactful ways) at times when your answer to, “Hi, how are you?” is likely to be: “Actually, I’m going to die alone, and then nobody will discover the body until the UPS guy comes to the wrong house and nearly keels over from the smell.”

Still, I did what I could, like taking a friend for a spa day after missing her birthday the week before. Weeks later, I learned she was still harboring resentment that I had missed her birthday. Don’t I deserve a bit of a break?

BAD HAREM DAY I’m a 31-year-old woman, and I recently started dating a guy about my age. We’ve gone on five dates, but we haven’t had sex, as I wanted to take things slowly. He’s been okay with that, but I’m quite certain he’s sleeping around elsewhere. I hate the idea of him having sex with other women.

Still, we aren’t at the level of being committed, and I’m not comfortable having sex with him yet. What do you recommend I do?

The “hate” you describe feeling at the idea of him having sex with other women is actually jealousy – specifically, “sexual jealousy”: a stew of dark emotions (including humiliation, rage, despondency and grief) that gets activated by the perception that a romantic relationship is at risk. Jealousy gets sneered at as some sort of pathetic emotional immaturity that’s to be avoided, a la, “C’mon...be bigger than that.” That advice is like telling the police to ignore alarms going off in banks, which, sure, are sometimes false, but can be a sign there’s a cash transfer in progress – to the duffle bags of three gun-brandishing dudes in Richard Nixon masks.

Like bank alarms, sexual jealousy has a vital function. It triggers “mate-guarding” behavior: tactics to fend off threats “to a valued romantic relationship” that could lead to “infidelity or abandonment,” explains evolutionary psychologist David Buss. Mate-guarding tactics frequently used by women include “monopolization” (like bolting oneself to a partner at a party), “appearance enhancement” (hotting up to outdo any lurking competition), and “sexual inducement” (performing “sexual favors” to keep a partner around).

In other words, the discomfort you feel is a call to action loaded into you by evolution. But evolved motivations aren’t behavioral mandates. Resolving to just suck up and ride out the discomfort seems the best way to avoid responding in ways potentially damaging to your long-term interests.

Letting fear of loss drive you to have sex before you’re ready could tag you with an air of desperation and/or cause you to confuse lust with love. Being gnawed by curiosity about the competition sometimes spins even normally stable and levelheaded women into crazy cakes stalkers. Tempting as it might be to know whom you’re up against, it’s best a new fir tree doesn’t suddenly appear outside the guy’s apartment wearing the same go-go boots you do.

By Kamala Kirk Last summer in the midst of the pandemic, Mar Vista resident Anne Fletcher came up with the idea to repurpose her wine bottles into sustainable home décor objects. She’d always had a love for candles and anything eco-friendly, and transforming the bottles into unique vessels for candles ultimately led to the creation of UnWined L.A. Studio.

“Even though I had a clear vision of the entire concept, from the materials and scents to the design, I had to learn how to transform the bottles and craft the candles every step of the way, which involved a lot more than I had first imagined,” Fletcher said.

To create each candle, Fletcher cleans, cuts and polishes the edges of each bottle, one at a time, then places the appropriate wooden wick at the bottom of each bottle. Afterward, she hand pours a premium blend of natural soy and coconut wax into each bottle in very small batches, one fragrance at a time.

“I take pride in handcrafting

Any bottle with an interesting shape or label has the potential to become a beautiful candle. I also try to match labels and

scents together as much as I can.

For example, some wine labels look more masculine than others, while some feel more festive, and others are reminiscent of flowers or spring.”

Is Now a Good Time to Refinance?

Doing the Refinance Math Wondering whether or not to refinance an existing mortgage typically means running some numbers. You can do this on your own but it’s probably better to talk to a loan officer and get some assistance. It really all boils down to how much you’ll save each month compared to what you’re paying now.

But there are other considerations.

First, pay less attention to the change in rate. Old school myths say that it’s a good idea to refinance if current market rates are 1% or 2% lower than what you currently have. But the rate is only a part of it. The other component is the amount being financed. For larger loan amounts, maybe a reduction of only 0.5% makes sense.

For smaller loan amounts, 2% may not be enough. Instead, calculate the monthly

savings and then divide that amount into the closing costs associated with the mortgage.

The result is how many months it will take to ‘recover’ the closing costs in the form of monthly savings. Pay less attention to the actual rate but instead how long it will take to get your closing costs back.

Take a loan amount of $300,000 and amortize it over 30 years with a rate of 4.50%. The principal and interest payment works out to $1,520. If current market rates are at 3.5%, the new payment would be $1,347 for a savings of $173. If closing costs were $3,000, then it would take just over 17 months to recover the associated fees. Not bad. If the loan amount were $100,000 under the same scenario, the monthly savings would be $57 and recovered in 52 months, or more than four years. Probably not a good idea in this situation.

For some, the rate has less to do with the possibility of refinancing when the loan is due for a balloon payment or a hybrid loan where the initial rate is fixed for a predetermined period of time before changing into a mortgage that can adjust every six to twelve months. Refinancing out of this type of loan can be a good idea if the property is to be held for an extended period of time, especially in light of today’s low mortgage rates.

Another important thing to keep in mind is the term of the new loan. If someone has a 30 year fixed rate loan and has been paying on it for say five years, refinancing into another 30 year loan essentially wipes out the first five years of payments and you are starting all over again. Today however, most lenders will adjust your new loan term to match how many years are left on the mortgage. In this example,

a 25 year loan could be taken out.

Finally, if it makes sense to refinance don’t wait to do so. Interest rates can change on a dime, especially if they’re headed upward. Don’t try and squeeze out another 0.125%. The downside of waiting just a bit longer could mean those lower rates are in the rear view mirror and you missed your opportunity. Besides, if rates do go down in a year or two, you can always refinance again.

In the early ‘60s, Marilyn and her family moved to Clinton-Sherman Air Force Base in Burns Flat, OK — a choice that would change the trajectory of her entire life.

It was there, while taking her children to hunt for arrowheads and explore abandoned farmhouses, that she befriended local farmers. She became intrigued with how market prices were established for their goods, and soon devoted every spare moment to learning about the commodities market.

Desiring more than her role as a housewife, she set up an office in her kitchen: pinning up commodities charts inside her cabinets, making trades while making lunch. Eventually, she drove north to Chicago’s Mercantile Exchange, with dreams of trading on its floor — but was refused access because she was a woman.

To Marilyn, whose least favorite word was “no,” that refusal was like throwing gasoline on a fire. She grew even more determined to become a commodities trader, and in 1970, when the family moved to Yuba City, CA, she got her foot in the door by working as a secretary at a brokerage firm.

Two years later, she took her brokerage exam and passed with flying colors, becoming one of the first licensed female commodities traders in the country. It was a fast-paced, high-stress job, and she loved every minute of it.

Upon her retirement in 1994, Marilyn and Paul moved to Marina del Rey, CA where she fulfilled her lifelong dream of living on the ocean. She continued to follow the market, though, trading stocks online every day (aside from the darn weekends, when the markets had the audacity to close).

Despite her enormous career success, Marilyn believed her greatest accomplishment was her children. She managed to juggle her roles as a loving parent and a modern-day career woman without ever appearing like she was juggling. She was truly someone who did it all, while always making her children feel like they came first.

Marilyn will be remembered as brilliant, confident, and fiercely independent, with a magnetic charm that drew in everyone she met. She was a study in contrasts: energetic yet introverted, tough yet compassionate, a loving Den mother and a fearless power broker rolled into one.

If one thing could be said about her life, it’s that she never let anything stand in her way; there wasn’t a door she couldn’t open with her charisma, her intelligence, and her determination.

Marilyn is predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Paul M. Hopkins, II. She is survived by her daughter, Tina Hopkins (William Novak); her son, Paul Hopkins, III (Eileen Gross), and her first husband, Alan Viera. Private services will be held at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, CA.

In honor of Red Cross Month, the Pacific Wheel at Pacific Park will display the Red Cross emblem during the month of March. The red and white lights will run dusk to midnight. This is the perfect time to salute all the volunteers who have made a difference in the most challenging of times. Members of the community have donated blood or platelets, spent time helping people impacted by disaster, learned life-saving skills from first aid or CPR classes, or even just provided comfort and company to members of the military (veteran or family). If you can’t visit in person, there is also a livestream which can be accessed at pacpark.com/santamonica-pier-live-cams/wheel The wheel is located at 380 Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica DTSM Black History Month Art Installations On Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, there will be public art installations created by local Black artists to honor the Black experience and contributions made by African Americans and those of African descent.

There are three installations: “Shades of Us” by A Brilliant Dummy, “Warm Waves” by SHpLinton, and “Phenomenal Women” by Mira Gandy. Black Santa Monica trailblazers are also featured on decorative banners along the Promenade.

They will be available until March 12.
