L E T T E R S Reaction to “A Life of Generosity: Venice remembers Orson Bean 1928 – 2020,” Cover Story, Feb. 13: Above All, the Love I’ve been away from Venice for a few months helping out my mom in Minnesota, and have been very sad about people and places that Venice has lost while I’ve been gone. None made me sadder than the heartbreaking news about the death of our Orson Bean. I lived across the street from Pacific Resident Theater for over a decade and would see him coming and going, almost always on his bike or in his cute little VW bug. We frequented the same spots (we loved the French Market Café!), and his friendly smile and wave could always be counted on to brighten your day.

I visited the home Bean shared with his beautiful wife, Alley Mills, during one of the Venice Garden Tours, and there was not a lovelier place to be in Venice. Their garden, the flowers, the charm, the coziness and, above all, the LOVE you could feel in their sanctuary on the canals was something to behold, and I feel so lucky that

and being married to a man much older than me I understand it. My heart aches for Alley and all those who loved him.

A Certain Twinkle As a longtime Pacific Resident Theatre subscriber, I had the occasion to meet Orson Bean and Alley Mills several times after shows. Both were happy to chat with their audience as long as we liked. I saw Orson’s one-man show twice because I liked it so much — his story was interesting and so well told. He had a certain twinkle in his eye. Orson and Alley’s love story was beautiful,

How Great He Made You Feel A great piece on a great human being. My favorite thing about Orson was how great he made you feel about yourself. I’m just another actor in the company at PRT, and Orson was, well, Orson Bean. He never made me feel small or insignificant though. In fact, he made me feel quite the opposite. He came to shows I was in and congratulated and complimented me afterwards.

For years after I played Henry V, he would greet me with, “My Liege…” He was always quick with a joke, a story, a smile. He was a friend to everyone who ever met him.

‘A Beautiful Young Spirit’ Marina liveaboard killed by alleged drunk driver in Playa del Rey hit-and-run

Friends say Patricia Ann O’Donnell, the skateboarder killed by a hit-and-run driver in Playa del Rey, was just starting to get her life together when tragedy struck.

O’Donnell, 48, was struck by a car on Pershing Drive between Manchester and Campdell Street, near Tandoor-A-India and Hacienda Playa, at around 1:15 a.m. on Feb. 13. Los Angeles police arrested 45-year-old Patrick Finkelstein, a Santa Monica CPA, later that day on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence.

Carla Gireaux, who lives aboard a vessel also docked off Tahiti Way, said she and O’Donnell became fast friends and were virtually inseparable over the past year. When O’Donnell was homeless, Gireaux and her yacht-broker partner Paul Delaney set her up with the sailboat where she lived.

“I’ve been crying for days. I’m broken. She was such a beautiful young spirit, a beautiful woman, and had such a warm heart,” said Gireaux, who retired from the skincare industry. “She was a real free spirit. She would sing aloud and could just go up to people and just talked to them. She liked to joke a lot.

Venice residents will soon get their first look inside the city’s temporary homeless housing facility in the former Metro bus yard along Main Street, with the two social services providers that will be operating the facility offering public tours from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22.

Locals can sign up to join a guided tour through a digital form circulating online and posted with this story at argonautnews.com.

People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) and Safe Place for Youth (SPY) expect to house as many as 100 adults and 54 youth at any given time, turning over beds to new clients as residents obtain more permanent housing.

Outreach workers are already interviewing potential residents among area homeless encampments, with people expected to start moving in at the end of the month or in early March.

Another Day, Another Boat Fire A power boat caught fire just before 6 p.m. Friday (Feb. 14) in its slip near the Santa Monica Windjammers Yacht Club north of Mindanao Way. An assignment editor for CBS2 and KCAL9 news posted footage of the fire to Twitter.

On Feb. 6 an unoccupied 34-foot Bayliner power boat burst into flames in its slip outside the Villa del Mar Apartments of Marquesas Way, creating flames so intense they damaged two other nearby boats, according to the Marina del Rey Harbor Patrol.

Jerry and Pat Epstein’s Art Collection Heads to Auction Following the death of Marina del Rey founding developer Jerry Epstein in September, a collection of modern and contemporary art that decorated the home he shared with his late wife Pat is heading to auction this Sunday in Downtown Los Angeles.

The sale includes 10 works by the late sculptor Robert Graham, whose nude “Torso” statue stands at Windward Circle not far from the home he once shared with wife Anjelica Huston. The anchor piece is a large-scale bronze female nude titled “Kim”(right), part of a series of six sculptures expected to fetch $25,000 to $35,000. Six mixed-media sculptures by Pat Epstein are also up for bid.

Gas Storage Facility Opponents Hope to Woo Mayor with Valentine’s Protest Photos by Luis Chavez

Local activists campaigning to shut down the natural gas storage facility in Playa del Rey took to the corner of Lincoln and Jefferson boulevards last Thursday for a Valentine’sthemed protest aimed at winning the heart of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. Decked out in shades of pink and red, more than two dozen demonstrators waved broken-heart signs to motorists and distributed “valentine hearts” to passersby.

Marina del Rey resident Anne Kirkpatrick, a member of the advocacy group Protect Playa Now, said she and others would love to see Garcetti revoke the SoCalGas facility’s conditional use permit, which allows a business to operate within city limits. Last October the Los Angeles City Council voted to reexamine the gas storage facility’s permit, issued in 1995.

“It could be another Aliso Canyon waiting to happen,” Kirkpatrick said, echoing safety

concerns frequently voiced by activists but disputed by SoCalGas, which contents the facility is critical to the region’s energy stability. “I hope this is a reminder that a year ago [Garcetti] talked about moving toward 100% renewable energy in his own Green New Deal, but we haven’t seen any action yet.”

Democratic state Sen. Holly Mitchell, who is campaigning to replace termed-out Mark Ridley-Thomas on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, also attended the demonstration.

Last month county supervisors called on Gov. Gavin Newsom to shut down Aliso Canyon, with L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn, whose district includes Playa del Rey, amended a resolution asking Gov. Venice Council Ejects Fisher Others see class warfare behind complaints of outrageous conduct PHOTO VIA VENICENC.ORG

By Gary Walker Venice politics are not for the faint of heart, but Tuesday night’s neighborhood council vote to unseat elected member Matt Fisher exposed new levels of acrimony and divisiveness along socioeconomic lines.

Supporters of Fisher, who was homeless for more than a decade after leaving foster care, say he is an essential advocate for the homeless and a lonely voice on the council in solidarity with low-income residents being pushed out by gentrification.

Others, including some who voted to remove him, say they take issue not with Fisher’s ideas, but how he had expressed them at the expense of others.

In more instances than were brought forth during the meeting, Fisher has been called out for disparaging or threatening remarks to council colleagues and members of the public.

Shortly after winning his at-large council seat in June, Fisher took credit for demanding that the city remove sidewalk planter boxes displacing homeless encampments.

Over vociferous interjections by several of Fisher’s supporters, the council voted 12-4 to oust Fisher for what was described as a pattern of disruptive behavior, serial violations of city and board rules of civility, and making false or controversial statements against fellow board members.

Neighborhood councils are city-sponsored advisory boards whose members sign code of conduct oaths.

Venice Neighborhood Council President Ira Koslow, author of the motion to remove Fisher, said numerous board members had complained to him for months about Fisher.

“I thought that I had to put this on the agenda because my job as president is to represent all

the stakeholders in Venice,” said Koslow, who has also clashed with Fisher during prior board meetings.

Fisher contends he’s being targeted by locals who are hostile to the homeless. He denied the grievances against him, stating he did not write the bomb scare accusations posted to Facebook from his account.

He also complained of Koslow and board member Jim Murez using vulgar gestures during public meetings, with some of Fisher’s supporters distributing photographic evidence.

“You literally have nothing,” Fisher told Koslow. “I’ve been trying to work this out with you, but you don’t respond to my emails. What bothers you is what and who I stand up for.”

Throughout the meeting, some of Fisher’s supporters interrupted the proceedings with some vulgarities of their own, decrying the council as a kangaroo court.

The most trusted news source for who and what is trending in Westside communities is preparing stories and taking ad reservations for its annual “Westsiders” edition.

“We’ll see you next election,” several people chanted.

“Matt was duly elected to this board,” said longtime Venice resident Beth Allyn. “If you vote him off, you’re taking away our right to vote for whomever we want.”

Six LAPD officers stood guard during the meeting in the Westminster Avenue Elementary School Auditorium.

Council member Christian Wrede, a neighborhood activist who has opposed controversial plans to build dense supportive housing projects on public land in Venice, got within inches of one officer’s face — “Aren’t you going to do anything?” he exclaimed — about a man in the audience who repeatedly disrupted the meeting and proceeded to follow Wrede around the room. TROUBLE Students and neighbors worry they’ll lose the pool at Venice High School

Shared by student athletes and city residents alike, the indoor pool at Venice High School is showing every bit of its nearly 60 years.

There’s a hole in the roof over the lifeguard tower, and when it rains there are leaks all over the building. Metal stairways into the water are roped off with bright yellow caution tape. The scoreboard is broken. At least the heater works … sometimes. And forget hosting swim meets— heavy winter rains shut out Gondolier swim and water polo players from pool access throughout most of November and December.

“I can’t tell you how many times over the past 18 years we’ve been shut out of our pool,” Sophie Sabbah says of her tenure as the school’s aquatics coach. A section of the pool remains off-limits due to roof damage, but when it comes to plans for repairs “I ask every day but I’m not told anything,” she said.

Venice High School is currently undergoing an expansive $111-million campus modernization, but the school district isn’t spending a dollar of that on the pool.

That’s because the pool “is owned, operated and maintained by the city of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks,” an LAUSD spokesperson said. “Per a longstanding arrangement, the city is responsible for repairs and maintenance of the Venice pool. Venice High School pays the city for the use of the pool.”

discussions with Recreation and Parks officials say the city has budgeted for basic repairs but hope LAUSD will chip in matching funds for major improvements.

Jimmy Kim, the department’s superintendent of aquatics, oversees the pool operations and not facility maintenance, but is aware of movement on the city’s part. He says Rec & Parks officials “are currently assessing and getting estimates for repairs” to the Venice pool, “and there

is some funding set aside to do renovations or even replacement with assistance from LAUSD.”

“This has everything to do with what what’s going on with the pool. I’ve been fighting for 18 years. It’s time to pass the torch.”

More immediately, Sabbah worries that any repairs during the swim season will displace her program of nearly 90 students.

“It’s just a matter of time before the pool’s down and we get shut out,” she said. If that happens, “the kids are going to have to practice [in the water] on their own. I’ll still take them to swim meets, but my plan is to put them on the front lawn and air swim.”

Not being able to host swim meets or water polo matches has resulted in lots of missed classroom time for student athletes, as those events occur during school hours. Travel time for both home and away contests

means missing some afternoon class time once or twice a week.

“Now that they have to be bused to every meet, my daughter won’t be able to compete in any swim meets this season because she’s already missed too much school for water polo,” parent Suzanne Dehmel said.

“It’s frustrating to miss class to go to other schools,” says Venice High School senior Ali Diaz.

Time-consuming travel to practice off campus is a major factor in Sabbah’s decision to step down.

“I cannot travel with the team to another pool. It’s not feasible; our bell schedule doesn’t allow it,” she said.

“And when would the kids do their homework — 10 o’clock at night? When would I see my child — 10 o’clock at night? I have no choice.”

polo and swim teams, tried to make up for the lack of pool access during November and December by driving student athletes to other pools.

“The breakdowns have been occurring with quite some regularity over the past several years,” she said, “and it is really so demoralizing to the water polo and swim teams to be unable to practice. Last winter we were carpooling the girls to Westwood as much as possible, but there were still woefully few practices involving actual water during the last girls’ water polo season.”

Kristin Duerr, whose son is on the water polo and swim teams, is mystified that the pool has been allowed to fall into disrepair so long even as souring real estate values are pricing families out of the area. Like many other parents, she believes

the campus deserves a new pool.

“I think the building needs to be leveled and rebuilt. It’s pretty decrepit,” Duerr said. “It’s shameful that a 60-year-old facility is not being maintained properly, and the irony is that we are living in a million-dollar neighborhood.”

Jim Murez, father of Olympic swimmer Andrea Murez and a member of the Venice Neighborhood Council, laments a lack of creative thinking on the city and school district’s part. He argues it would have made sense to replace the current pool with a heated outdoor pool concurrent to LAUSD’s larger campus renovations, and hopes a sliver of the estimated $6.9-billion budget for the 2028 Olympics will help facilitate a new pool. Simply repairing the roof, he said, “only puts a Band-Aid on an old wound.”

Paola Cervantes said public access to the Venice pool after school hours helped her son, now a member of the high school swim team, learn to socialize with other children when he was young.

“His days were remarkably smoother when he was swimming. It was a real game-changer for him. The pool became his hub. He made deep and lasting friendships,” she said.

Lamenting lack of clarity surrounding the pool’s future, Cervantes said the aging facility is a vital neighborhood resource and “it is not being forgotten by the families.”

Charters Must Pay for Empty Seats LAUSD seeks $2.3 million from four Westside schools that took space from traditional campuses but missed enrollment targets

Advocates for traditional public schools in Los Angeles have long complained of losing student enrollment and related financial resources to public charter schools, with neighborhood campuses often forced to give up underutilized classrooms and other facilities in order to house charter schools.

After a sudden policy shift by LAUSD, however, charters that took space from traditional schools but didn’t reach the enrollment targets for which the district allocated that space are being forced to reimburse their host schools by as much as $2,200 per unaccounted for student. Host schools can spend the money at their leadership’s discretion.

State law adopted 20 years ago allows charters to occupy space on traditional public school campuses, but it also requires charters to reimburse host

schools when they fall short of projected enrollment but continue to occupy “over-allocated space.”

It isn’t clear why LAUSD wasn’t attempting to collect current and back over-allocation fees until its Board of Education passed a resolution to do so last month.

The California Charter Schools Association does not contest LAUSD’s right to pursue over-allocation reimbursements, but it does take issue with how some of the fees are being calculated and, most all, with charters taking huge financial hits

completely by surprise.

“Since 2012, in an agreement with charter schools the district pledged to notify charter schools

by Aug. 15 that they were seeking over-allocation penalties, and we think it’s unfair to spring this on our members after essentially waiving [over-allocation penalties] for so many years,” association attorney Ricardo Soto said. “We [also]

believe that the district is acting unlawfully in the way that they have calculated these fees.”

Soto acknowledges that overallocation fees “can encourage collaboration between two schools” that share a campus.

Nick Melvoin, who represents Westside voters on LAUSD Board of Education, expressed similar reasons for co-sponsoring last month’s board resolution to pursue over-allocation reimbursements — specifically, “alleviating the burdens of co-location and promoting collaboration and harmony between co-located schools,” a statement reads.

But as for why LAUSD waited so long to collect, “I asked the same questions when this came on my radar,” he said.

Among the many complaints about Fisher that he denied, council members said Fisher would throw out wild accusations that local homeless services nonprofit Safe Place for Youth is abusing children.

“Matt wanted to be on our homelessness committee,” said Koslow. “How can a member expect to be on our homeless committee if he’s accusing SPY of abusing kids?”

In an emotional statement, council outreach chair Sima Kostovetsky said she has “great respect for what [Fisher] has done and what he has overcome,” but is hurt by the vitriol of Fisher’s supporters — specifically taunts that council members are “fascists” who “want people to live like we have apartheid” and “probably liked apartheid.”

Prior to the meeting, Fisher and supporters held a press conference decrying efforts to remove him as motivated by ideological differences.

“He lived on the street for many, many years. So the expectation of having him always speak in this very polished, diplomatic, tactful way like developers or architects is unreasonable,” Oakwood community activist Naomi Nightingale said in Fisher’s defense. “He has a constituency, and a lot of them are the un-housed.”

Helping Vapers Kick the Habit Playa Vista smoking cessation clinic tailors program to e-cigarette users trying to quit Vaping — the use of electronic cigarettes for tobacco and marijuana consumption — is up 135% among teenagers in Los Angeles County over the past two years, according to the American Lung Association, fueling a public health crisis facing doctors and government officials.

The shift in how people smoke is also impacting how people quit.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Group clinical pharmacist Ching Chow has been holding smoking cessation programs in Playa Vista and Culver City for several months, and recently added vaping cessation amid news reports of a spike in serious lung injuries among e-cigarette users.

The classes cost $25, and so far she’s had about 60 takers.

“Vaping has just increased our patient population that we need to help with quitting,” Chow said. “People do understand more [of the dangers] now, especially with recent news reports. It seems that vaping is causing more health issues with patients ending up in the hospital on ventilators. The ingredients in the oils that are vaped seem to be more harmful than cigarettes.”

Cessation techniques are similar for vaping and smoking, but one major difference is that it’s harder to know how much nicotine a vaper has been ingesting, which requires Chow to be very detailed in her conversations with patients.

Late last year the Los Angeles Unified School District sued JUUL Labs Inc., accusing the Bay Area e-cigarette company of contributing to a rise in student absences, which results in losses of state funding for the district.

LAUSD Supt. Austin Beutner told The Argonaut that some students commonly refer to school restrooms as the “JUUL room.”

“It’s an epidemic in our schools.

We hear from our educators how [vaping] is taking time away from student learning, and we see it when students are in rehab and are absent. We hear from students that their peers are struggling with this epidemic and we feel that we have an obligation to do what we can to help our students and their families,” Beutner said.

“We’re frustrated that policymakers haven’t taken a more proactive approach.”

Meanwhile, proposed legislation authored by state Sen. Jerry Hill (D- San Mateo) would outlaw the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including e-cigarette products such as JUUL pods.

Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D- Santa Monica) is a co-author of that bill and is disturbed by the vaping-related surge of young tobacco users.

“We know that it has a very deleterious effect on a young person’s health. It’s disheartening because we’re in an ongoing

battle with the tobacco industry.

We’re making great progress on getting people to stop smoking, and then along comes the industry with vaping,” Bloom said.

Chow’s vaping cessation strategy includes identifying triggers for vaping such as anxiety, boredom, peer pressure or environmental factors and creating an individual plan to reduce nicotine reliance on the path to quitting.

“We tell people not to quit cold-turkey because it’s much harder,” she said. “We address their physical addiction, talk about ways to avoid certain triggers and develop individual plans to quantify how much a person is using in order to taper down.”

Chow might recommend nicotine replacement gum, patches or lozenges, and sometimes she’ll seek out a prescription for the antidepressant Wellbutrin, which is commonly used by smokers trying to quit but is considered an “off-label” use for vaping cessation and requires consultation with a primary care physician.

As with cigarettes, vaping withdrawal symptoms include headaches and anxiety swings, and Chow acknowledges some of her patients relapse but many who do stick out the program ultimately succeed.

“Most people are able to quit smoking or vaping after one or two months in our classes,” she said. “Motivation is an important factor. You have to be ready to quit.”

Each dance presents its own unique challenges, says Neary.

“Agon” Neary describes as “very hard stamina-wise” and musically challenging because of Stravinsky’s 12-tone score.

“All the pas de trois are hard and the pas de deux is very long and the finale, and to get everyone in syncopation,” she says. “It’s a challenge for the dancers musically because it’s Stravinksy at his most... avantgarde and modern and then 12-tone. So we have to count the entire score.”

“Concerto Barocco” keeps the dance’s entire ensemble of eight women on stage for 20 minutes with nary a break in movement. (“They don’t leave!” says Neary.)

And Apollo, though slower and more languid, is a test of dancers’ grace, balance and control.

“Apollo technically is very challenging and it’s very pure. … It’s almost like [being in] a church,” says Neary, describing how the quartet of dancers playing Apollo (the male lead) and his three muses (three female dance partners) are highly visible and

exposed on stage. In one part, the three muses, each must lift her leg just enough to create an almost 180-degree fan or “starburst” of appendages rising from Apollo’s torso. When executed perfectly, one of the dancer’s supporting legs magically vanishes from sight — like an artful illusion. If a toe or leg is just off, the sublimeness of the moment melts away.

But Los Angeles Ballet has never been known for turning away from a challenge. From deciding to build an entire classical ballet company from scratch in Southern California’s once parched dance scene 16 years ago (a desert no more thanks in large part to Los Angeles Ballet’s presence here) to being the first American company to tackle British choreographer Frederick Ashton’s “Romeo and Juliet” just four years ago, Los Angeles Ballet thrives on taking bold steps just like Balanchine did as one of the 20th century’s most innovative choreographers.

“These ‘black and white’ ballets are very special,” says Neary. “These are three masterpieces of Balanchine. They’re very contemporary in their way … And I think they fit really well together.”

In Balanchine speak, that means you can “see the music” and “hear the dance”— that the marriage between the music and the movement is so seamless that it looks completely natural or “organic” as Neary says.

Audiences can see that symbiosis in Los Angeles Ballet’s presentation of “Balanchine Black & White,” which dances into The Broad Stage on Wednesday (Feb. 26) and concludes with a star-studded gala honoring film and TV director-producer-choreographer Kenny Ortega on Friday (Feb. 28).

By Christina Campodonico There’s a moment in George Balanchine’s “Concerto Barocco” when everyone in that ballet’s ensemble hops on their toes in a diagonal line, rising and falling like tinkling piano keys.

Although the ballerinas are bouncing to the strident strings of Bach, their jumps embody the spirit of Balanchine’s “black and white” ballets, in which the ballerinas dress in monochrome leotards and tights while their male counterparts don white tops and black bottoms. Often statuesque and sylphlike, the dancers appear like the long and pearly white or ebony keys that bring much of the music to which they move to life.

In this family of ballets, the dancers’ simple garb not only emphasizes the dances’ connection to music, but also Balanchine’s wish to show ballet stripped down to its purest form in these predominantly plotless ballets.

You never knew what phase she’d be in, up or down,” said Sagal, host of “Shape Up L.A!” in the 1980s and ’90s.

“But she wasn’t in her car anymore and it looked like things were getting better.”

O’Donnell, Sagal said, was “a sweet, intelligent, fun person … and a very good dancer.”

“She was off the street and starting to get her life together, slowly but surely getting her life together, and then this had to happen,” said Gireaux.

FLEE INFESTATION Disturbingly, I’ve had two close female friends “ghost” me in five months. I’ve known each for 15 years. (They don’t know each other, and one lives out of state.) I’ve tried repeatedly to contact each, asking “Did I do anything to hurt or offend you?” No response. I just want the truth so I can move on.

— Baffled There comes a time when you wish someone would treat you with a little more kindness, like by screaming out all the reasons you deserve to be left for dead and have your face eaten off by raccoons.

Even more painful than being dumped by a friend is being dumped by a friend and having no idea why.

Lingering questions we can’t answer are mental weevils. Their fave food is our peace of mind, which they gnaw through at random moments. In scientific terms, psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik found that when we have unfinished business, the mind remains in a “state of tension” until we get closure.

Questions that are both unanswered and unanswerable eat away at us because of the way our memory is engineered. Psychologist Robert Bjork explains that we encode information into memory by first taking it in, then taking a break from it, and later going back and retrieving it. Each “retrieval” is a “learning event,” burnishing the info more deeply into memory. So, each time you pull up this unanswerable question, “Why did these friends ditch me?” you move it a seat or two closer to the front row of your consciousness.

To shove it back to the crappier seats, consider the apparent function of

nagging questions: pushing us to figure things out. (We can’t learn from our mistakes unless we know what they were.) Though “Why did they ditch me?” will likely remain a mystery, there are constructive questions you can answer, like, “Am I generally a good friend? Are there ways I fell short?”

Also consider whether you have shared values. We like to believe this is the basis of our friendships. However, I love the finding by psychologist Mitja Back that we tend to form friendships through “mere proximity” — like being next-door neighbors — though we’ll congratulate ourselves for “choosing” so wisely … well, until we find out who they voted for.

Another way to cut the spin cycle is imagining a plausible reason each disappeared on you (like clashing values) and accepting it as THE reason. Psychologist Elizabeth Loftus finds that recalling an event we were told about but didn’t actually experience can implant it in memory, turning it into an experience we swear we had.

So, the more you reflect on the plausible reason, the more it might pass for the actual one.

Finally, you could try to make peace with the mystery. When “Why did they ditch me?” swings around, have a stock answer at the ready: “Hey, self, remember I’ve decided to accept that I just can’t know, and I’m good with that.” Comforting as it would be to finally get answers, sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself is not only give up hope but crush it, burn it in a trash can, and then flush its ashes down the toilet.

MOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE Why are men OK with living in gross conditions? The guy I started dating is a sweetheart, but his place is absolutely disgusting (including the kitchen and bathroom). He doesn’t even notice it.

Why do women seem to have a higher standard for cleanliness than men?

— Dismayed Some men do wait a while to clean the bathroom — like until they go from needing a bottle of Mr. Clean to needing a bottle of Mr. Arson.

Science suggests you’re right in observing that men, generally speaking, are less disturbed by gross living conditions. Study after study finds higher “disgust sensitivity” in women, meaning women tend to be more icked out by signs of pathogens — bacteria and microorganisms — and indications of possible infection or disease.

Evolutionary psychologist Diana Fleischman explains that women have faced recurring issues over evolution-

ary history that may have led to “heightened pathogen disgust sensitivity.” These include women’s temporary declines in immunity during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

“Women also must protect children and infants who are vulnerable [to] disease.” Additionally, women are “uniquely able” to pass infections on to their offspring during pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding.

Let the guy know you’re a woman with needs: clean sheets and towels, a clean bathroom and kitchen, and general housekeeping at his place.

Suggest options (rather than telling him what to do): He could clean the place himself; however, hiring a cleaning service (especially for the first go-round) might be a good idea.

Professionals have vastly higher standards for cleanliness, while he seems to be waiting for a sign to scour the place — like the crud on the coffee table growling at him when he sets down his beer.
