Our Families Come First Re: “Avoiding Another Gas Crisis,” News, Jan. 16 I wish to say “Bravo” and “Thank You!” to Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn for her bold support of beginning to divest from our antiquated SoCal Gas Company storage facility in Playa del Rey. The Aliso Canyon tragedy foretells a possible sleeping giant for the rest of the coastal gas storage facilities, of which the Playa del Rey is but one.

The Aliso Canyon scenario forced residents, business and schools to evacuate for months, leaving illness in the wake of a toxic leak. Hahn’s support is greatly appreciated by those who have lived in the area long enough to know of the current smell and toxic emissions that have been part and parcel of our exquisite beachside environment.

Neighborhood Council of Westchester-Playa Past President Cyndi Hench and the professor from Loyola Marymount University may take a cautiously slow approach, but as a longtime resident, I (and many others) favor the now-is-best attitude to address one of the small milestones in our need to address the coming-and-here climate crisis.

Nearly the Whole Picture LAPD releases video footage of fatal police shooting in Mar Vista, but officer’s body camera wasn’t activated when he discharged his gun

By Gary Walker LAPD-compiled video footage taken before, during and after the Jan. 11 fatal officer-involved shooting on Venice Boulevard in Mar Vista depicts the suspect behaving erratically and brandishing what appeared to be a handgun, later discovered to be a modified bicycle part that resembled a handgun.

The 40-minute Critical Incident Community Briefing, posted to YouTube on Jan. 27, relies heavily on local business surveillance camera footage of 31-year-old Victor Valencia as he moves in the direction of LAPD Sgt. Colin Langsdale’s police cruiser and the moment after Valencia is felled by gunfire.

The video doesn’t include body camera footage or audio of the shooting — Langsdale, who responded to the call from the

audio does not pick up for two minutes while the camera is booting up to full functionality, according to LAPD. LAPD Chief Michel Moore, who made the video footage public several weeks earlier than the standard 45 days, wrote in

Barrington Plaza Fire May Result in High-Rise Sprinkler Mandate PHOTOS BY GUNNAR J. KUEPPER

Fire-extinguishing sprinkler systems may soon become mandatory for all Los Angeles high-rise apartment buildings in reaction to last week’s terrifying blaze at Barrington Plaza, which lacked a sprinkler system despite a similar fire in 2013.

One man died and at least seven others suffered smoke inhalation in the Jan. 29 fire at the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Barrington Avenue, with firefighters making dramatic rescues of residents fleeing to the roof and even scaling the exterior of the 25-story building. The fire appeared to start on the sixth floor, and investigators are calling its origin “suspicious.”

By Gary Walker Santa Monica locals Jeff and Devra Schwartz have lived every parent’s nightmare: watching and wondering if their child would survive a life-threatening illness. Last year during an extended period of illness, their then 3-year-old son Judah fought for his young life, at one point undergoing an astounding 47 blood transfusions over just three weeks.

“It was very touch and go for a while. There were a few days where we were living lab test to lab test. There’s nothing more painful than watching your child suffer and there’s nothing you can do,” recalled Jeff Schwartz.

Soon, through the kindness of both friends and strangers and a collaboration between Loyola Marymount University and the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center, Judah, now 4, is on his way to recovery and is strong enough to play again with his older

The two universities mounted a blood drive last year at LMU, where Jeff Schwartz works in information technology services, and within a month the O-positive blood, platelets and plasma that Judah needed came pouring in, effectively saving his life.

Judah had Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome, a blood disorder characterized by acute kidney failure, low levels of blood platelets and low red blood cell counts. Small blood vessels in the kidneys can become damaged and cause blood clots, which can block the kidneys’ filtering system and lead to potentially life-threatening kidney failure.

Originally thought to be a stomachache after Thanksgiving 2018, further tests showed the toddler had contracted the blood disorder via the E. coli virus. He suffered seizures and ministrokes and underwent 24-hour dialysis to clean his blood. To

lessen stress on his brain and support his breathing, Judah’s doctors placed him on a ventilator and induced a medical coma.

Judah’s platelets — blood cells that help the body form clots to prevent excessive bleeding — plummeted to just 13,000; a healthy person’s count is 250,000 to 450,000.

“Many people on the care team were concerned because he suffered from quite a few complications. There were some harrowing moments for a while,” said Judah’s pediatrician, Dr. Alice Kuo of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Crista Coop, LMU’s director of educational technology services and Jeff Schwartz’ direct supervisor, said her entire team wanted to help when they heard about Judah’s illness.

By Danny Karel It is almost impossible to read, watch, or listen to the news without hearing about the unprecedented opioid epidemic that has gripped our nation by the throat. In 2017 alone — the latest year where victim totals have been fully counted — the CDC reported 70,237 overdose deaths in the United States, with 2,199 of them occurring in California. However, reports of the crisis’ impact within Los Angeles, and particularly the Westside, have been scant. But that doesn’t mean it’s not happening here, too.

John Shain is a substance abuse counselor who has worked on the Westside for almost five years. He’s the owner of Keep Left Recovery in Mar Vista, a private counseling business, which he founded after working for Muse Treatment in Culver City. Counselors like Shain have watched the opioid epidemic unfold from front-row seats, and he says he’s noticed some patterns among local clients.

“It usually starts with an injury of some sort, or they find the medications in their house — like either their parents had [an opioid] prescription, or their grandparents had a prescription,” says Shain. “And usually it just evolves into finding fentanyl and heroin.”

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that’s become the most terrifying player in the opioid epidemic. Fifty times more potent than heroin, it can be deadly when only “a few grains — as little as a quarter of a milligram” are ingested, according to a recent Los Angeles Times article. It has medical applications as a surgery anesthetic, and as a way to manage pain in terminal cancer patients, but illicit drug manufacturers have also

Compared to heroin, which is developed from poppy seeds and requires months to cultivate, fentanyl is much less expensive and less time consuming to produce. As a result, the drug claimed no fewer than 31,000 lives in the United States in 2018. It was also implicated in the recent death of Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, a Santa Monica High School alum.

“I would say 80% to 90% of my clients that I have dealt with in the past two years, either in treatment or privately, are all [using] fentanyl,” Shain says.

“They tell me that heroin doesn’t really exist on the streets anymore; it’s mainly all fentanyl.”

Through his clients, Shain has

also learned that where addicts go to find drugs is shifting towards the Westside.

“A lot of my clients over the past year haven’t been going to Skid Row, they’ve been going under the 405 freeway,” he says, mentioning the homeless encampment on the north side of the Venice Boulevard underpass. “You find paraphernalia all up and down Venice Boulevard, from needles to aluminum foil to you-name-it.

Everyone knows it’s there. All of my clients know it’s there, and they know where to get it.”

Homeless Deaths Go Underreported Despite the presence of drugs like fentanyl in the streets of a metropolitan area as large as Los Angeles, a comparatively

few opioid-related overdoses — exactly 493 — were recorded in the city in 2018. However, that number is expected to climb as “pending” cases are closed. And although this figure represents an alarming 40% increase from the number of deaths recorded in 2016, it also means Los Angeles will continue to have one of the lowest overdose rates per capita anywhere the state. There are a number of ways to explain this, including factors related to L.A.’s ethnic diversity, the serious possibility that many deaths simply go unreported, and local preferences for other controlled substances.

Police officers in Santa Monica carry Narcan, a potentially lifesaving antidote to opioid overdoses, but rarely find

occasion to use it, said Sgt. Erika Aklufi of SMPD’s Homeless Liaison Program.

“Compared to parts of the Midwest or East Coast, where they’re giving two or three cans of Narcan a night, we’re not seeing anything like that. When it actually pops up, it’s kind of odd,” Aklufi said in an interview late last year. “That being said, meth[amphetamine] is something we do commonly see. …

“When I started 15 years ago, we dealt with a bunch of drunks out on the street. If you had drugs, you were hard core. Now our drunks have become meth addicts — at least the great majority of them — mostly because it’s cheaper and the supply pipeline is broad.”

As of mid-October, Santa Monica police had logged 734 cases in which drug use was the only or primary offense, 189 of which (25%) indicated the suspect was homeless. That’s out of about 120,000 calls for service per year.

Decriminalization of minor drug offenses by the 2014 state ballot initiative Proposition 47 means police officers who confiscate drugs and paraphernalia are often forced to issue citations to suspects rather than take them to jail. Options to place drug users into addiction rehabilitation programs also remain scarce, however.

“Occasionally a bed will open up and we can get someone into treatment, but we need more of that,” Aklufi said. “We’re waiting for the county to build up capacity for treatment.”

Lello Temesa, an associate medical director with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, explained in an email why many opioid overdose deaths likely miss the final tally: “… when an

company flatly ignored a warning from the FDA stating that its OxyContin advertisements “grossly overstated the safety profile” of their marquee drug, leading consumers to underestimate its powerful addictive quality — medical doctors, the ones actually writing the prescriptions, have also fallen in the crosshairs.

In response to the epidemic, two Marina del Rey doctors have decided to stop prescribing opioids to manage their patients’ pain. Dr. Hooman Melamed, an orthopedic spine surgeon, and Dr. Akash Bajaj, a specialist in interventional pain management, have independently developed and implemented alternatives that leave no chance for patients to become addicted.

“I put patients on what I call a non-narcotic protocol,” says Melamed. “I give them a cocktail of a few medications right before surgery, put them on an anti-inflammatory diet, then afterwards we continue on the anti-inflammatory diet.”

He believes that many doctors are aware of alternatives, but they tend to fall back on their medical training, which recommends combating pain with opioids. Too often, this leads to overprescribing.

“You follow this protocol. All the doctors go into [medical

school] without asking why we are we doing this,” he says.

“You just follow it, and when you come to practice you just follow protocol.”

Bajaj made a similar observation.

“A large part of it is the way we’re trained,” he says. “We’re trained very classically. I think it’s a matter of taking what we already know as doctors, adding common sense, and realizing

Many, if not most, doctors still see opioids as the best remedy we have to combat pain.

Dr. David M. Cutler is director of Saint John’s Global Health Program and Chairman of the Santa Monica Family Physicians medical group. He’s noticed that, in response to the epidemic, many doctors are becoming more reluctant to prescribe opioids. This may seem like a step in the right direction, but for many patients, it means difficulty securing treatment.

“Most patients are not impacted by [addiction],” he says.

“Quite frankly, they are inconvenienced by it, because they may require a small amount of opioids.”

Studies reported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse back Cutler’s assertion that the majority of patients who are prescribed opioids do not develop an addiction. However, the number that do develop a dependency still seems unreasonably high. For patients who are prescribed opioids to manage chronic pain, between

21% and 29% misuse their prescription. Between 8% and 12% develop an opioid addiction. Of those who misuse their prescription opioids, between 4% and 6% make the transition to heroin.

These statistics demonstrate why the epidemic requires novel solutions. Pain patients are caught between choosing to forgo narcotics and accept their pain — a route often taken, Cutler notes, in foreign countries — or to roll the dice and accept opioids, and the possibility of developing an addiction.

Often, pain patients don’t know enough about the drugs to make an informed decision.

In the coming months and years, numerous lawsuits, organizations, governments, clinics, and individuals will attempt to battle the opioid epidemic on various fronts. At the same time, 130 people in the United States will continue to die every day. There are no indications that this number is going to decrease, at least any time soon. Statistics like these are not abstractions. The deaths they account for, along with the instances of addiction that precede them, are happening here, on the Westside.

“These problems evolve slowly and resolve slowly, so I don’t think there’s going to be any major change in the years ahead,” says Cutler. “Until we find better alternatives than opioids for pain, it’s going to remain a problem.”

Homeless communities, in particular, appear to be the locus of many unreported opioid overdoses, Temesa and others suggest. This is more than just tragic: Accurate victim totals are useful for organizations looking to allocate resources to combat the epidemic. They are also needed if responsible parties are to be held fully accountable. Unsurprisingly, the question of blame is both complex and contentious — the only thing generally agreed upon is that there’s a lot of it to go around.

Fire Drill Fridays Come to L.A. Greenpeace USA and Jane Fonda pressure Gov. Gavin Newsom to block fossil fuel extraction permits and remove oil and gas production from residential areas

Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard will risk arrest during this week’s climate change demonstration youth activists who are calling on us to act like our house is on fire. She realized she had not been acting like her house is on fire, but the situation really is that dire. … For four months she moved to D.C. to become a full-time climate activist, and I’m thrilled about the amount of energy this project has unleashed. We’re going to keep going because if enough people get active, we can build the people power we need to force our leaders to lead.

How will the L.A. event compare to the D.C. events, which are most famous for Jane Fonda being arrested?

We’re using the same model: engage a number of celebrities, which drives the public spotlight, and then use that platform to elevate the voices of those working the most on the issues.

We’ve had scientists, activists and we really prioritize voices that are often excluded from the mainstream of climate discourse. We prioritize women, people of color, indigenous people — people who live on the frontlines of climate impacts but are often sidelined in conversations about that.

We have a number of speakers from the community around L.A. who are living with oil and gas in their communities. …

California is one of the only states that produces oil and gas but doesn’t have a setback [law], so people have drilling and wells in their front yards, in playgrounds. One of the things we’re calling for is a 2,500-foot health and safety buffer between oil and gas operations and where people live.

There will be a civil disobedience, but Jane will not be participating in the civil

disobedience [aspect of this demonstration] because of the lingering implications of her repeated arrests in D.C. She’s required not to participate in civil disobedience for 90 days. … But that’s OK, because there are lots of other people who will do it, and there are lots of other roles in the movement. …

She has a bunch of other people to pass the baton to. Others, including myself, will be engaging in civil disobedience.

Are you able to describe what that will be?

I can’t give details, but I will tell you that we are always peaceful. Greenpeace was founded with an act of civil disobedience. … Throughout history we have used civil disobedience to force all kinds of positive change, as have immigrant rights activists, civil rights activists and so many others. But it’s important to note that we’re not starting this conversation with an act of civil disobedience. For 30 years we have exhausted the polite methods that democracy offers us. We have presented the science. We have gathered petitions. We have testified in front of Congress, made documentaries, issued reports.

We have done everything one is

supposed to do in a democracy, but our leaders are refusing to lead as our climate is approaching an incredibly dangerous tipping point. The choice to do civil disobedience was in many ways forced on us because nothing else is working. We’re at a point where we can politely perish or we can scale up our disruption and force our leaders to lead.

Does civil disobedience mean the same thing when you’re in a more progressive community on climate issues versus the current administration in Washington D.C.?

In California, public sentiment is very much in support of taking strong climate action.

Sadly, [former Gov.] Jerry Brown was an excellent climate leader at talking about it, but not an excellent leader at actually doing something about it. There’s a huge gap between his rhetoric and the reality.

There were 22,000 new oil and gas permits under his administration. Nobody would know that, right?

THE ARGONAUT: What do you hope to accomplish by staging a Fire Drill Fridays protest in Los Angeles?

ANNIE LEONARD: I’ve been a climate activist for decades. One of the things that’s been really frustrating is that we have all the science, we have technological innovations, we have economic arguments — we’ve had everything we need to compel change except one thing, which was a massive public movement across this country, demanding it; engaged citizens really pressuring our elected leaders to lead. Fire Drill Fridays is a huge contribution to creating that.

By Joe Piasecki Fifty years after bombshell actress Jane Fonda’s anti-Vietnam War activism made her an icon of resistance movements, Fonda is once again making headlines — now in her eighties — as a leading celebrity voice in the movement to combat climate change.

Last year Fonda spent six months in Washington D.C. leading Fire Drill Fridays protests at the Capitol, the name referring to teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg’s widely publicized remarks that “our house is on fire.” Those demonstrations attracted global attention for two reasons: Fonda routinely subjected herself to being arrested as an act of civil disobedience, and she brought plenty of her celebrity friends along for the ride, including actor Joaquin Phoenix and Fonda’s “Grace & Frankie” co-stars Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston.

Working with Greenpeace USA, Fonda moves her Fire Drill Fridays protests to Los Angeles City Hall this Friday — specifically hoping to pressure Gov. Gavin Newsom into restricting production of fossil fuels in California, says Greenpeace USA Executive Director Annie Leonard.

Another Homeless Death in Mar Vista A 31-year-old man whom police believe to have been homeless was found dead Sunday morning in a tent behind the Taco Bell at the northwest corner of Venice and Inglewood boulevards.

LAPD Capt. Steven Embrich said the man may have died of a drug overdose and that investigators do not suspect foul play. A friend of the deceased called 911 after finding him unresponsive, and paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

A homeless woman who lived in the tent encampment on Venice Boulevard under

the 405 Freeway died there in mid-December, according to local advocates for the homeless.

In October, a 24-year-old homeless man died of a drug overdose near the encampments outside the Mar Vista Post Office at Grand View Boulevard, according to Los Angeles County Coroner – Medical Examiner Records.

Nearly 1,000 homeless people died on the streets in Los Angeles County last year, according to L.A. County public health records.

LMU Statue Will Honor Hank Gathers Loyola Marymount University will erect a statue of the late Lions basketball great Hank Gathers outside Gersten Pavilion on Feb. 29, marking the 30th anniversary of Gathers leading the Lions in an unprecedented run to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Championship series.

Gathers collapsed and died during a semifinal matchup on March 4, 1990, and the Lions went on to defeat the defending national champion Michigan before falling to the eventual championship UNLV team.

A public dedication of the statue happens prior to the Lions’ final regular

season home game, with former head coach Paul Westhead and members of the 1989-’90 team expected to attend the ceremony and the game.

What’s that?

In terms of fossil fuels, two things have to happen. We have to use less of them by promoting renewable energy. Wind, solar, conservation, electric vehicles, energy efficiency — all those things can help us use less fossil fuels, and California has been fabulous on that front as a leader. Where California has dropped the ball is you also have to produce less. You have to stop pulling fossil fuels out of the ground. … Scientists say that 80% of known fossil fuel reserves are going to have to stay in the ground if we’re going to avoid the worst-case climate change scenarios, but California is continuing to expand its oil and gas operations. … If you reduce demand for fossil fuels but you don’t reduce production of it, these extra fossil fuels end up being exported, and that cancels out the benefits of reducing demand. It’s like a pair of scissors — you need both sides for it to work.

Our demand of Gov. Gavin Newsom is, No. 1, stop new fossil fuel extractions. No more permits, no more pipelines, no more investments. Stop expanding the problem so we can buy time to solve it. That’s not happening yet, and that’s really what climate leadership is today: Stop making it worse.

The board of the Los Angeles Police Protective League has come out in support of Moore releasing videos early, “provided it does not jeopardize the integrity of the overall investigation,” according to an email from the board.

“In this case, the early release of the video validates that the initial 911 calls that describe the suspect with a handgun, the surveillance video captures the suspect wielding what clearly appears to be a handgun and photographs after the incident depict a black metal object that responding officers believed to be a handgun. Officers reacted to what they believed to be an armed suspect that posed a threat to the safety of nearby pedestrians and the officers,” the board’s email continues.

Police initially believed that Valencia was a transient associated with a homeless encampment under the 405 Freeway, but Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner – Coroner spokeswoman Sarah Ardalani said that the office’s records do not indicate he was homeless.

According to Moore, Langsdale is not on administrative leave while LAPD’s Force Investigation Division, which handles all use of deadly force cases, investigates the shooting.

LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein said in the video compilation that the shooting investigation could take up to a year to complete.

We had over 109 scheduled slots filled, plus walk-ins and they collected almost 80 bags before they ran out,” Coop said.

Devra Schwartz is the university’s vice president for campus safety and security.

“LMU supported us during the ordeal and afterward. They were very flexible and caring when we needed time off to go to the hospital. It’s a special place to work,” Jeff Schwartz said.

Last month the family joined Judah’s medical team at UCLA to thank his doctors and some of the donors who had helped in Judah’s recovery.

Kuo was impressed by the number of donors who answered the call to donate blood.

“Those transfusions were very life saving for Judah. That’s one of the most remarkable things about Judah’s story: the overwhelming public support for him and his family,” she said.

After months of physical and occupational therapy, Judah is almost back to his old playful self.

“He characterizes this as his period of hibernation,” Schwartz said. “He was so resilient throughout this whole ordeal.

He’s my hero.”

Long-term outlook: Aging Boomers to boost California’s housing inventory California’s housing shortage is no secret.

Residential construction has lagged behind our state’s growing housing demand for years, especially in the low tier where first-time homebuyers usually enter the market.

But there is some hope for desperate homebuyers on the horizon: the coming tide of Baby Boomers expected to release their homes in the coming years.

The share of homes that are currently occupied by Baby Boomers which will be released on the market will steadily increase over the next two decades.

However, as long as Baby Boomers are still buying replacement property, their selling behavior can’t be counted toward the share of housing stock available.

That’s because while this sort of movement creates turnover — good for agents — it’s a zero-sum game when it comes to inventory — bad for first-time homebuyers.

But as Boomers age, they will more commonly move in with family, into retirement communities, to other states with more retirement-friendly prices and taxes or pass away. This gradual reduction in Boomer households will go toward propping up our state’s depleted inventory. But just how far will it go

toward returning the for-sale inventory to a healthy level?

Zillow estimates 34% of U.S. owneroccupied homes are currently owned by those 60 and older. As these Boomeroccupied homes are increasingly released onto the market in the coming years, the total inventory share will rise.

Here in California, the share of inventory to become available due to Boomer exits is estimated to be between 11–12% by 2027.

For example, the number of owneroccupied units present in Sacramento’s current housing inventory is roughly 295,300 as of 2019, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. A relatively large share of this inventory will become available due to Boomer exits, equal to 12% or 35,400 units in the years between now and 2027. This will rise to 28% by 2037, for a total of 82,700 homes to be released onto the market.

How will the coming wave of Boomer exits impact local markets?

In a healthy housing market, the expectation is that a flood of inventory would dramatically reduce competition and depress home prices. But in California’s unhealthy housing market, the coming wave of homes has the

potential to right the imbalance.

The actual result will depend on construction.

Zillow’s analysis rightly points out that, in many metros, the coming wave of Boomer homes is roughly equal to what’s needed to make up the past decades’ construction shortfall.

Continuing the above scenario, Sacramento will see roughly 35,400 new units hit the market due to Boomer exits in the coming decade. Meanwhile, the past decade (2007-2017) has seen 32,300 more households form than construction units started. Thus, the expected Boomer inventory wave will basically be a zero-sum game in terms of total inventory numbers.

While any amount of inventory addition is positive for California’s housing market, a flat outcome isn’t enough.

For construction to return to sustainable levels and support California’s growing population, some major changes need to occur. These include: • changing laws at the local and state level to adjust zoning and allow greater density; • lifting parking restrictions near public transit that currently restrict growth;

• incentivizing builders of low-tier housing; • shortening permitting times for all types of housing; and regularly evaluating regional housing need.

Some of these changes are already occurring through recent legislation to add more affordable housing. Therefore, expect construction to gradually pick up in the coming years. But some challenges remain, such as the current construction labor force shortage. Further, any legislative changes need to do battle with local not-in-my-backyard (NIMBY) advocates.

Real estate professionals can get involved by being vocal yes-in-mybackyard advocates. More housing is crucial to curing the inventory shortage and bolstering home sales volume.

THE SOCIOPATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE I discovered that the guy I’m dating has a girlfriend he’s cheating on. In fact, she confronted us, which was awful. I’ve had a history of guys cheating on me, and I want to end the pattern. Unfortunately, I’m not attracted to a lot of guys I go out with, and I’m really attracted to this guy.

— Chemistry Being really attracted to somebody is the go-to excuse for shrugging off a potential partner’s shady behavior — pretty much anything this side of “Well, sure, several of his neighbors are wintering in Ziploc in his basement freezer.”

It helps that attraction seems like some mysterious and magical force. It’s actually not. Who we’re attracted to — which people, with which features — is prearranged by our biological robot overlord, aka evolution, via genetic code written into each of us. It’s part of evolution’s scheme for building better babies, giving our genes the best shot at being passed on to future generations.

We see this in research by neuropsychologist Bruno Laeng that suggests we are attracted to potential partners who look like us — though not too much like us. Laeng found that people were most attracted to individuals who share about 22% of their facial features (as opposed to 11% or 33%, the other percentages tested). Other research by social-personality psychologists R. Chris Fraley and Michael J. Marks likewise hit the 22% mark.

Lang explains that this balancing of

“similarity and dissimilarity” (which we do subconsciously) helps us avoid “inbreeding with close relatives,” like siblings or first cousins. Inbreeding increases the chances that both partners would have the same nasty recessive genes for a disorder or disease. “Recessive” genes are true to label when they are paired with a dominant gene: They recede ... slumping into the background, unemployed, inactive. But when two recessive genes for a condition are paired (like when close relatives with the same recessive gene make a baby), these genes become active — and so does the disorder or the disease.

As for you, the features you happen to be attracted to come in the package of a guy who cheats on his girlfriend.

This reflects bad character. Assuming you didn’t go out into Datingland all, “I’ve just gotta find a sexy sociopath,” reflecting on the evolutionary nuts and bolts of attraction might help you stop using it as an excuse and give the shove to Mr. Morally At Leisure.

To avoid again letting the hots for some himbo blind you to his undesirable qualities, make a short checklist — what I call “man minimums,” the qualities you can’t do without in a man — and put character at the top of your list. When a man shows you he comes up short on your “must haves,” cut off contact and move on. Ideally, if you’re screaming in bed, it isn’t because the girlfriend of the guy you’re with just burst through the door brandishing a missile launcher.

HALVING IT ALL I’m a 20-something gay man dating someone who makes much more money than I do. He picks up the tab on most dates, and while he seems OK with this, it makes me uncomfortable. I pay here and there, but I can’t afford much beyond lunch or lattes. Does our financial inequality mean a relationship between us is doomed?

— Barely Scraping By Chances are the guy doesn’t think you’re hoofing it up to the Coinstar clutching a baggie of change because you feel the nickels and dimes between your couch cushions could do with a little sun.

What matters is how fair a relationship feels. Fair doesn’t mean everything’s exactly 50-50, as in, he puts in 50 cents; you put in 50 cents. It means you each seem equally invested — equally motivated to make sacrifices to benefit the other — as opposed to one of you pulling the cashwagon, plow-style, while the other just hops on, puts his

feet up, and enjoys the ride.

When there are imbalances (when one partner puts in a lot and gets comparatively little in return) it isn’t just the more giving person who gets socked with the feelbad. Social psychologist Elaine Hatfield finds that partners who are “over-benefited” — who fail to put in their fair share of the relationship effort — “may experience pity, guilt and shame,” while those who feel “under-benefited” for their contributions can experience “anger, sadness and resentment.”

The way to avoid either of these emotional dumpster fires is to voice your concerns. This should start a conversation that sets you two on track to be loving, equally contributing partners in the way you’re each most able — taking into account that your best bet for making a lot of money in the near future is probably counterfeiting hundred-dollar bills on your inkjet printer.

From Paris to Venice

Les Petits Chanteurs de France make a pit stop at St. Mark Church on world tour

Smooth harmonies, heavenly voices and a jubilant mood.

These are a few ways to describe the music of Les Petits Chanteurs de France, an eclectic all-boys choir based out of Paris, which performs at St. Mark Church on Sunday (Feb. 9). The group, composed of young French singers aged seven to 20 years old with the unique ability to sing angelic tunes in harmony, will be featured at the Catholic church’s three morning masses at 9 a.m.,10:30 a.m. and the Spanish mass at noon — all leading up to the Chanteurs’ 2:30 p.m. concert.

Directed by choirmaster Veronique Thomassin, the group is known for its rigorous recruitment process and its singers’ ability to belt out Latin classics like “Ave Maria” and “Gloria” by Vivaldi as well as perform pop, folk and Broadways songs in French and English. Sunday’s concert will be a mix of modern and classical music.

Since 2013, Les Petits Chanteurs have been touring all over the world, doing concerts everywhere from Taiwan to Russia. St. Mark pastor Father Albert van der Woerd decided to

bring the group to his Venice parish after hearing them perform last year.

“They are very good. I was very impressed,” he said.

The group will continue their tour of the United States through Feb. 23, but their Venice stop is not to be missed.
