Welcome to Ahwatukee!

Let’s start by clearing up a very common question — one that you might have already gotten from friends and relatives, and may also wonder yourself.

The word “Ahwatukee” (which, by the way, is pronounced Ah-WahTOO-Key) doesn’t mean anything specific.

Granted, there has been a rumor circulating around for years that the name apparently was a Crow Nation translation for the Spanish phrase “casa de sueños,” or “house of dreams.” However, historians who have researched this claim have decided that this is not the case.

But no worries — even if you cannot share a specific meaning of Ahwatukee’s name, you can definitely let others know what you love about living here. And, as it turns out, there are plenty of reasons.

According to the Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce, about 88, 500 people live in Ahwatukee. Although it is technically part of Phoenix, it does not have that big-city vibe. In fact, residents often say Ahwatukee resembles Mayberry much more than Manhattan.

In Ahwatukee, which was once referred to as the “world’s largest culde-sac,” neighbors get to know each other. Quick trips to the grocery store to grab bread and milk often turn into marathon chat sessions with friends who are shopping there. Head to a local coffee shop for a cup of inspiration or to a family-owned restaurant for lunch and plenty of familiar faces will probably be there, too.

This small-town feel means Ahwatukee residents have the best of both worlds: life in a family-friendly and welcoming community that feels more relaxed than rat race — all with easy access to everything the Valley has to offer.

Having said this, please do not think that Ahwatukee is lacking in things to do or places to go. If you enjoy eating out, the community boasts a wide selection of top-notch restaurants that cater to every whim. In the mood for Mexican, Italian, sushi or just an amazing sandwich? Residents won’t have to venture far to find these choices.

For shopaholics, Ahwatukee offers a variety of stores including nationally known retailers and smaller boutiques. The shopping centers at 48th Street and Ray Road are always busy, as are plenty of other stores throughout the community. It also takes a few minutes to go south on 40th Street to Phoenix Premium Outlets; to head east on Ray Road over the I-10 freeway to Casa Paloma; or to visit Chandler Fashion Center, off the Loop 202 freeway.

Speaking of the Loop 202, the expansion project for the freeway is now finished, and it is making commuting out of Ahwatukee even easier. In other words, that largest culde-sac nickname is quickly becoming outdated.

In better times, Ahwatukee is home to community events that take place during the year. The annual Easter Parade is a classic example, with high school bands and floats aplenty. Dance Studio 111 puts on amazing performances of “The Nutcracker” every year, and students and parents cheer on their fave high school football team during the yearly meeting of Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe high schools in the Tukee Bowl.

Annually — when there’s not a pandemic — the Festival of Lights kicks off the holiday season with a huge party in Desert Foothills Park. It culminates in the lighting of the cactus and trees along Chandler Boulevard with thousands of beautiful white lights.

Speaking of parks, Ahwatukee has plenty of them, many of which feature walking/biking/jogging trails and

colorful playground equipment for the kids. It’s extremely easy to take advantage of the gorgeous sunny weather and head out for some exercise, whether it’s at a park, a local neighborhood greenbelt or a nearby hiking trail.

As you speak with your new neighbors and ask them what they enjoy about living here, you might also hear “the outstanding school system.” If you share your home with kiddos, you can rest assured that what your new friends are telling you is true. As part of the Kyrene and Tempe Union High school districts, Ahwatukee has plenty of outstanding facilities serving its youngest residents. There are charter schools with great reputations, too.

Of course, no discussion about what makes Ahwatukee special would be complete without mentioning its many lovely homes and neighborhoods. Like the restaurants, shops and schools, there is truly something for everyone here in terms of housing — from well-maintained apartments and condos to family homes and large and luxurious mansions. In fact, some of the spendiest real estate in the Valley of the Sun can be found in Ahwatukee. Singles, couples, and families of all sizes can easily find their dream home in Ahwatukee. Many of the homes are located in specific neighborhoods like Lakewood, Mountain Park Ranch, Tapestry Canyon and Ahwatukee Equestrian Estates.

All of this brings us back to one of the original questions: the meaning of “Ahwatukee.” While the word may not officially mean some variation on the phrase “house of dreams,” you will probably understand why this urban legend stuck around for so long.

Ahwatukee is a friendly, scenic and outstanding place to live. The quality of life is high, and the neighbors are friendly and welcoming. For you, and the tens of thousands of others who are proud to live here, Ahwatukee truly does mean “home.”

A brief history of Ahwatukee Foothills

As you get to know Ahwatukee — whether you are driving around running errands, taking a relaxing walk through a park, picking up groceries at one of the many local supermarkets, or grabbing takeout from one of dozens of restaurants, it may be difficult to visualize this bustling area as a stretch of empty desert.

Actually, old-timers were convinced that the land close to South Mountain would never amount to much.

William Ames, a prominent Midwestern dentist, purchased 8,000 acres of state land just south of the mountain. He and his wife moved into their 12,000-squarefoot winter residence, just off today’s Warner Road, on Thanksgiving Day 1921. The Ames’ luxurious, 17-room ranch house stood for over 50 years, and Mrs. Ames’ land donation helped to make South Mountain Park the country’s largest municipal park.

Byron Slawson, the ranch’s caretaker, rose at 4 a.m. to light the house’s water heaters and cart 300-pound blocks of ice from Chandler. Except for early homesteader Arthur Hunter, Slawson lived longer in the future village than anyone has before or since.

Today it’s called Mountain Park Ranch, but in 1929 Dr. Alexander Chandler foresaw it as San Marcos in the Desert.

Chandler commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a resort hotel on 600 acres just north of today’s Desert Vista High School. Chandler’s spectacular resort awaited a fall groundbreaking but was never built due to that October’s stock market crash.

in preparation for Belden’s grand house, but his 1930 death resulted in abandonment of the plans. His family maintained the pristine desert beauty of their eventual 2,670 acres for much of the 20th century.

Helen Brinton of Dixon, Illinois, purchased the Ames residence in 1935, and her effort to translate the Ames’ “casa de sueños” (Spanish for “house of dreams”) into the Crow Indian language resulted in the house and its surrounding acreage being christened “Ahwatukee.” Brinton spent 25 winters at the Ahwatukee ranch before her death in 1960.

Bill Collier transformed a square mile of desert into rich, irrigated farmland beginning in 1939. Farming the Collier-Evans Ranch for 45 years, the land epitomized the quaint agricultural charm of the village’s predevelopment. Today, two signature lakes on the land distinguish it as the master-planned community of Lakewood.

About 4,140 acres to the west — combining stunning topography with battle-scarred terrain — market International Harvester’s proving grounds. Its steep, winding dirt roads carved high up into the hillsides

were perfect for trucks and heavy equipment testing.

Today, Chandler Boulevard’s million white lights, which traditionally begin in late November, provide a gateway to The Foothills and Club West, offering one-of-a-kind vistas.

It took the early 1970s vision of Bakersfield, California, homebuilder Randall Presley to transform Ahwatukee from a single ranch house into a thriving community. Before him, the land west of Interstate 10 and south of the mountain was considered remote and unpromising.

But Presley’s development of the first master-planned community south of South Mountain stands today as a visionary achievement.

In recognition of its prominent place within the city of Phoenix, Ahwatukee, Mountain Park Ranch, Lakewood, The Foothills and Club West were officially designated the Village of Ahwatukee Foothills in 1991.

Volunteer opportunities? Ahwatukee has you covered

residents who would like to give back to the community will find plenty of ways to meet their charitable goals, all while staying close to home.

There are plenty of organizations, charities and social clubs in Ahwatukee that would be grateful for your time and help.

From scouting and American Legion Post 64 — Ahwatukee’s only military service organization — to women’s and faith-based groups, and service and mentoring entities, residents have almost unlimited choices when it comes to finding like-minded people who live in their community.

Many of these organizations post their meetings and activities in the Ahwatukee Foothills News as well as on various community-centric social media sites. Chances are, as well, that people who connect with one community organization likely will find leads to others.

Among the oldest, most established organizations are the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce, the Festival of Lights Committee, the American Legion Post 64 and the Kiwanis Club of Ahwatukee, which hosts the annual Easter Parade, one of Ahwatukee’s signature events.

For more than two decades, the Festival of Lights Committee was responsible for the brilliant display of 1 million lights on the median of Chandler Boulevard between 24th Street and Desert Foothills Parkway. To pay for those lights, it put on two of the biggest community events of the year: the Kick-Off Party, a family-friendly all-day festival held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and the Wine and Beer Tasting Festival, a springtime, adults-only evening of fun, food and games.

Recently, the Festival of Lights Committee passed the torch for setting up the lights to the Foothills

Community Association. But the FOL Committee will continue to be a charitable organization that helps develop events to pay for the lights as well as other charitable activities in Ahwatukee.

The chamber offers business owners an opportunity to meet other business owners with a stake in the community. There also are local BNI groups for business owners and professionals.

The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA’s Outreach Program for Ahwatukee Seniors, commonly called Y OPAS, offers help to seniors who can’t get around on their own and is a wonderful opportunity for people who want to volunteer a few hours

a week to help them. Its signature service is transporting seniors in the community to medical appointments, for grocery shopping and even for small social occasions. Volunteers can devote as much time as they want to driving these seniors around — and making new friends.

Broader charitable groups abound, such as the 100+ Women Who Care Valley of the Sun. Chances to make new friends are also plentiful, with groups like the Ahwatukee Republican Women and Ahwatukee Foothills Friends and Neighbors.

You only have to reach out, and there’s someone in Ahwatukee ready to extend a hand in friendship and camaraderie.

Great schools, activities make Ahwatukee great

Familieswho choose to move to Ahwatukee because they are looking for a great education for their kids will be pleased to know that the area has earned a well-deserved reputation for its outstanding schools. Ahwatukee also offers a diverse range of school choices for preschoolers through high school students.

A multitude of options abound, from the youngest learners through the turning of the tassel at high school graduation.

Start with public schools serving the village. The Kyrene School District, for pre-K-8, often wins bond and override elections and then puts the money to good use. The district continues to enjoy a strong academic reputation, with eight of its schools holding A+ School of Excellence designation from the Arizona Educational Foundation. Parental involvement is welcome and strongly encouraged.

The Tempe Union High School District has Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista within Ahwatukee.

Mountain Pointe and Desert Vista traditionally produce senior classes that are awarded millions of dollars in scholarships. Their students win academic honors, such as National Merit Scholarships and Flinn Scholarships. The sports teams always are in the running for championships. Band and debate are the pride of Desert Vista, and the drama groups in both schools are top notch. The campuses bear a healthy, diverse mixture of socioeconomic backgrounds.

Some parents choose to send their kids to private Brophy Prep and Xavier Prep in Downtown Phoenix or to Seton Catholic in Chandler. Some go to Ahwatukee’s charter high school, Horizon Honors.

Horizon Honors, a charter school on the southern edge of Ahwatukee, believes that all students deserve a gifted education, and it provides multiple opportunities for students to shine.

St. John Bosco, a private Catholic school in Ahwatukee, serves preschool through eighth grade. Ahwatukee has a plethora of other church-based and Montessori schools for younger students.

There is plenty for youngsters to do in “The Tuke” as well.

The Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA is state of the art and sponsors youth leagues in several sports. Phoenix Parks and Recreation provides classes and programs for kids. The Kyrene elementary schools offer Kids Club after school.

Makutu’s Island and Main Event Entertainment are fun houses just across the freeway when the kids get a bit bigger.

Are the kids into music? Music Maker Workshops calls Ahwatukee home.

Do they dance? Kimberly Lewis’ Dance Studio 111 in Ahwatukee not only has classes for all levels; it also produces Ahwatukee’s annual holiday tradition, “The Nutcracker,” now twoplus decades strong.

Do they act? Give Ahwatukee Children’s Theatre a visit.

Can they hit? Ahwatukee Little League went to the Little League World Series a number of years ago and continues to be competitive for state titles.

Great schools and great activities for kids are prerequisites to great places to raise a family. Ahwatukee more than qualifies for that.

After a nationwide search, the Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) and South Mountain Community College (SMCC) revealed that Dr. Richard C. Daniel is the next president of SMCC.

Daniel will replace interim President Dr. Janet Ortega, who assumed the role on Aug. 12, 2022, after the retirement of Dr. Shari Olson.

“I am honored and excited to join the South Mountain Community College family,” Daniel said.

“I look forward to working closely with the faculty, staff and students to provide premier higher education and workforce development opportunities for those we serve in our community.”

Daniel’s experience spans 30 years in Arizona higher education. Daniel currently serves as the executive vice president and chief operating officer of

Education Forward Arizona, working to identify partnerships and fundraising opportunities for growth and impact. Daniel has also led its fundraising efforts. In 2021, he assisted in raising $8.5 million from foundations, corporations, federal and state grants, and tribal communities. His efforts have raised around $16 million in multiyear funding.

“Dr. Daniel’s extensive background in higher education impressed System, college and community stakeholder groups,” MCCCD Chancellor Dr. Steven R. Gonzales said. “His passion and advocacy for education of all levels will support our diverse student population. I am proud to welcome him to Maricopa and look forward to working together to advance the mission of the SMCC.”

Previously, Daniel served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer at College Success Arizona, working to connect transformative opportunities of

higher education to underserved and underrepresented students across Arizona. His background includes senior leadership positions at public research universities and community colleges, including ASU, the University of Texas at El Paso, and SMCC.

Daniel earned a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies, a master’s in higher education administration, and a bachelor’s in exercise science from ASU. Daniel will assume his role on Monday, Nov. 7.

John Bosco Catholic School celebrates 20th anniversary

John Bosco Catholic School opened its doors in August 2001 and celebrated its 20th anniversary last year.

The preschool through eighth grade private school focuses on academic excellence, faith and community service. Over the years, there have been changes and upgrades in curriculum, technology, facilities and such to ensure students are receiving a 21st century Catholic education. One thing that remains constant at St. John Bosco is a dedicated community.

Respect and dedication are reflected in the awarding of honors by local media. St. John Bosco’s preschool was voted Best Preschool in Ahwatukee, and SJB School and teacher/librarian Theresa Harvey were voted among the top three in Ahwatukee.

St. John Bosco school was founded by four parishes: St. Benedict, Corpus Christi, Holy Spirit and St. Andrew the Apostle. Now, it is solely a ministry of St. Benedict and students come from all over the East Valley to attend.

A new church building is under construction for the St. Benedict and St. John Bosco community. We are excited for our new building as our students attend Mass every Friday, receive classroom instruction on making their sacraments, and lead many religious events throughout the school year. A new church building with more space and amenities will make their religious experience even more special.

St. John Bosco’s mission is to educate the whole child — spiritually, academically, emotionally, socially and physically. Thus, Christian values are infused throughout all subjects, including STEM. In addition, physical education, art, music and Spanish programs are a part of the

core curriculum. Every classroom is equipped with a Onescreen interactive board, a set of Chromebooks to equip each K-8 student, and an updated social studies and science curriculum.

The STEM Lab houses nine 3D printers, a green screen, audio-visual equipment, a dozen Sphero robots, and more. The Science Lab houses a stateof-the-art science closet containing a plethora of hands-on materials used by K-8 students such as microscopes, scales, synthetic frogs, infrared thermometer guns, laser and optic kits, prisms, a pumping heart model, an eye model and a human skeleton model.

Be prepared when biking South Mountain

is well known as a mountain biker’s paradise, due in large part to a combination of a local park and preserve and outstanding weather — at least for much of the year.

Experienced riders who have put hundreds of miles on their bikes and newbies to the sport will both find plenty of opportunities for mountain biking at South Mountain Park and Preserve.

Granted, the area may seem intimidating at first, but it does not require bombing down an actual mountain — just that you are off the road with your tires touching dirt.

GETTING STARTED

1. Access to a mountain bike. This one has a bit of a price barrier to getting started, so make sure it is something you will enjoy before investing in your own bike. Try renting a bike first or, better yet, find a friend with an extra you can borrow.

2. A helmet is a must. Will come with the rental bike.

3. Water/snacks. Bring extra water; the trails here are open, dusty and hot.

4. Sunglasses will protect your eyes from sun, bugs and rocks.

5. Proper footwear. Sturdy, closed-toe athletic shoes, not fl ip-flops.

If you enjoy the activity and want to engage on a regular basis, you could spend up to $10,000 on a bike. If money doesn’t matter, by all means purchase one of those.

But that is definitely not required for an enjoyable experience.

Do your research on where you will likely ride on a regular basis and the type of equipment needed and share examples of the trails you are looking to ride with the bike store staff.

You can get a decent new bike for $500 to $1,000, less for a used one. This will be a hard-tailed bike (will have shocks in the front, not the rear).

Starting at about $1,000, you can get a full-suspension bike with rear shocks and some upgraded components, which are nice to have but not a necessity for riding the Desert Classic Trail at South Mountain and other trails of similar ability level in the Phoenix area.

Avoid spending much less than $500 on a new mountain bike, and make your purchase from a local bike shop or outdoor retailer.

I know several people who have purchased cheaper mountain bikes in an attempt to save money, and I’ve seen them literally fall apart the first time the bike hit a small hill and kicked a vibration through the cheap frame.

The bikes sold at mass retailers are not high enough quality to withstand trail riding, so avoid wasting your money on these.

You also will need to buy:

• A helmet. You want to be spending at least $50 to $100, considering what it’s protecting.

• Floor bike tire pump. Anywhere from $25 to $50 will get you a solid one; you could certainly spend more if you wish.

• Additional tire tubes. Prices vary, but you can get solid quality options for about $8 each; get a couple.

• Hand-held tire pump, repair kit, tire lever and bike tool. Can get for around $25 total.

• Water. Consider a backpack with a water reservoir; can also hold snacks and repair items.

Whenyou are under the weather, the last thing you want is to make a long drive to your doctor’s o ce.

Fortunately, this is not the case at all in Ahwatukee. As newcomers to the area soon realize, you can nd just about any type of medical care that you need here — no road trip required.

If you pulled a muscle in your back while moving into your new place and it is a er usual business hours, Ahwatukee has urgent care facilities that will be happy to see you. For more serious medical cases, Ahwatukee also is home to an emergency room.

Neuropathy or poor circulation: Diagnosing the difference

neuropathy involves damage to the nerves in your feet. Symptoms include muscle cramping, di culty walking, burning, tingling, numbness and pain in the legs or feet. In many cases, it’s caused by diabetes, but poor circulation can also cause symptoms or make them worse.

“ e thing is these symptoms are very similar to those of PAD,” explained Dr. Kerry Zang, podiatric medical director of CiC Foot & Ankle. “ ey are so similar that in many cases, people are given a diagnosis of neuropathy when in reality it isn’t.”

Poor circulation or PAD (peripheral artery disease) is caused by the buildup of fatty material inside the arteries that hardens into plaque. is limits the blood that passes through the arteries.

“Blood brings oxygen and nutrients to your legs and feet, which they need to

stay healthy,” Zang said. “If you have poor circulation, your feet will tell you they need help. You’ll nd yourself needing to rest because your leg cramps when you walk even a short distance, or at night you need to stand up to relieve a cramp in your foot.”

Ignoring symptoms creates problems.

“PAD is o en called the silent killer because you may have it and not even know,” said Dr. Joel Rainwater, chief medical o cer of Comprehensive Integrated Care (CiC).

It’s sometimes missed because people dismiss the symptoms as “just a sign of getting older.” But it’s not.

“It’s not normal to have di culty walking to your mailbox. It’s not normal to have constant leg pain or cramping,” he said. “ at’s not normal aging. It could be a sign of PAD.”

Born and raised in Montana, he attended college at Montana State University and studied dentistry at Oregon Health Science University.

A er dental school, Holton moved to southern Oregon and built a large family and cosmetic practice in Medford. For ve years, Holton and his wife, Karen, traveled to their Arizona condo so they could visit their daughters, who attended ASU.

ey decided to move here, and Holton is happy to have found Advanced Dental Health because the feel of the o ce and team reminds him of Medford.

Holton is joined by Dr. Richard Sinn, who grew up in a small farming town in southern Minnesota. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biological sciences from Minnesota State University-Mankato. Upon completion of his rst master’s degree, he moved to Glendale, where he obtained his pre-doctoral training and Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Midwestern University in 2020.

A er dental school, he continued his dental education at the University of Iowa, where he received two years of surgical training and obtained a master’s degree in oral health sciences with research focused on dental implants. He then returned to Arizona, where he now works as an adjunct faculty member at Midwestern, teaching rst-year students.

Dr. Heath Snell completes the team of doctors. He joins the Advanced Dental Health team to perform

in-house wisdom teeth removal and sedation for our patients receiving dental treatments.

Snell graduated summa cum laude from Arizona State University for his undergraduate studies. He then attended the University of Colorado School of Dentistry, where he pursued his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He was nominated into the prestigious Omicron Kappa Upsilon dental honors society along with receiving several awards and honors while in dental school. A one-year course of study in advanced education in general dentistry following his graduation from dental school provided Snell with the required training to be certi ed to perform extraction of wisdom teeth and IV sedation.

Sarah Neumann is the award-winning founder of Ahwatukee Skin & Laser and Sun City Dermatology in Sun City West. A practicing dermatology PA since 2001, Sarah grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and learned early on the importance of hard work and determination to achieve success. She completed her undergraduate degree in community and medical dietetics and psychology. After receiving her registered dietitian (RD) license, Sarah traveled and found her true passion for dermatology. While completing a medical mission in Belize, Central America, where she worked at a local hospital, her interest in treating diseases of the hair, skin, and nails, exploded. After returning to the US and moving to Arizona, she completed the Master of Medical Science Physician Assistant Program at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. Her personal experiences have led her to create full-service general, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology practices based on compassion and a commitment to providing attentive patient care. Kendall P. Ahwatukee is also home to many fabulous pizza joints, and to be fair, you should give them all a shot. Each pizza place has its own special pizza, crust or sauce, and they all deserve a taste.

Communities within Ahwatukee make it great

Asa new resident, you might understandably be curious about how you can become more familiar with your new town — and meet some new friends in the process.

In Ahwatukee, you can definitely take the time to experience all that it has to offer — including meeting neighbors and sharing interests and hobbies.

A good place to start is comedy. There are no brick-andmortar comedy clubs in “The Tuke,” but there are comedy clubs that give periodic performances in Ahwatukee venues. “Ha Ha Tukee” hits Cactus Jack’s, thanks to comedian Anthony Solimini.

Maybe boxing is a good escape after the week you just had. Put on the gloves and have at it.

If you’re into it, there’s very likely a community of people in the village who also are into it.

There are mom’s clubs and women’s clubs, and singles have groups they can join.

For writers, join the conversation.

If you want to brush up on your public speaking skills, you can join Ahwatukee Toastmasters Club and do just that.

Ready to try to make change? Get involved with your HOA, the largest being Ahwatukee Board of Management and Mountain Park Ranch. Just be ready to referee whether a home’s paint color is correct for the neighborhood, if the owner needs to address weeds in the front yard, or whether it’s OK to leave a portable basketball hoop up in the driveway overnight. Being on an HOA gives you a chance to meet your neighbors and have a say in what goes on right where you live.

If your interest is business and you are adept at networking, or if you’d like to learn to be more adept at networking, join the Ahwatukee Chamber of Commerce. It’s likely to be a mutually beneficial experience.

Arizona is such a beautiful state, and at least half of the year there is no better place for outdoor activities. Ahwatukee is on board, with running, hiking, camping and bicycling clubs.

As you ponder your new home, draw a deep breath, look at the mountains, and decide where you want to play golf or pickleball today. Groups in “The Tuke” make that easy.

There are a wealth and variety of communities within the community that make Ahwatukee a place where people want to live.

A community rich in faith

Thelate Rev. Don Schneider became pastor of Ahwatukee’s rst church, Mountain View Lutheran, in 1980. is milestone event helped the area gain a reputation as a community that is rich in faith.

Schneider’s congregation was a launching pad for several other churches in the community, including Corpus Christi Catholic Church, by extending the use of its premises to other edging houses of worship.

Ahwatukee historian Martin Gibson told the Ahwatukee Foothills News, “As other religions’ parishes sprang up, Mountain View’s doors were open to Baptists, Catholics, Episcopalians — all had a place of worship during their parishes’ infancies, thanks to the generosity of the church. Mountain View Lutheran Church was instrumental in fostering a sense of community in Ahwatukee.”

Ahwatukee also has been home to the Rev. Deborah Hutterer, who in September 2018 was installed as the sixth bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. She is responsible for overseeing 89 congregations serving 44,000 members spread across Arizona; southern Nevada; and St. George, Utah.

Another local notable is architect Steve Bardusan, who has designed more than 80 churches across the Valley, including Mountain Park Community Church. Forced out of its rst church by the South Mountain Freeway, the Mountain Park Community congregation in 2017 moved into its new church on 48th Street, south of Chandler Boulevard.

Just up the street from Mountain Park, the Parish of St. Benedict — one of Ahwatukee’s two Catholic churches — has plans to build a new church on its campus.

Something special is happening at Generation Church in Ahwatukee, and it’s not just its long history of feeding the community through the Generation Church Food Pantry. Its Sunday services have everyone talking.

When asked what makes its experience so special, some point to the community-focused, family feel. Others said it has the best kids’ ministry and worship experience.

e church o ers these fantastic Sunday experiences in a beautiful, modern facility. It also provides couple-to-couple marriage counseling, Divorce Care and Celebrate Recovery programs — including crKids. It also has more than 100 Life Groups helping families develop deep connections and discipleship.

ere is one common denominator: the bold, Bible- lled and practical teachings of Pastor Ryan Visconti. His winning approach and spiritempowered ministry are key reasons the campus became a part of Generation Church in June 2017.

e church was previously newLife church, planted by Paul and Beth Lavino 30 years ago. eir daughter, Amy, grew up in the church and became a vital part of the ministry.

In 2014, the Lavinos watched as Amy’s new husband, Ryan Visconti, a highly decorated Army o cer and veteran with a master’s degree in theology, led Generation Church in Mesa.

e Mesa church was growing exponentially, and the two churches

began to help one another. In 2017, the signi cant opportunity to help more people experience new life in Jesus became clear by becoming one church. Generation Church has been one of the fastest-growing churches in the country over the last seven years (Outreach Magazine). Now, this community’s longtime church is far more capable of aiding all who need her.
