and relationships, something they do with a healthy dose of quality customer service.
S1304 E. Chandler Blvd. 480-460-1340 | theyoasis.com
ue and Brian McHugh had always dreamed of owning a business, and there was something about desserts that struck them as a potentially fun venture. In 2010 their dream was realized as they jumped on the growing market for frozen yogurt and started Yoasis.
When they opened, they did not have a specific clientele in mind, they only wanted to serve the Ahwatukee community in a satisfying and delicious way, and it is with that philosophy that Yoasis has become so successful.
The shop serves 12 different flavors in a self-serve format in cups and waffle cones, as well as offering pies, smoothies, cookie sandwiches and root beer floats. They even have an offering for your furry companions as they make frozen yogurt specifically for dogs as well.
The couple hope they can continue to serve Ahwatukee for many years to come, as they bring new and exciting flavors of frozen yogurt to the community. In fact, every spring they attend a frozen yogurt convention just so they can find the newest and best flavors.
Perhaps what the duo takes the most pride in is maintaining those community contacts
“For us, customer service includes three primary components: first, we strive to be in a ‘ready’ state at all times, making sure our products are fresh, neatly organized and the store is clean at all times; second, we provide fast and friendly checkout service once the customer has made their creation or selection; and third, we continue to be an active part of the community from a fundraising and charitable perspective,” said Sue McHugh.
That last one has proven particularly notable as Yoasis not only has a community room available for public use, something people have used for everything from club meetings to math tutoring, but they also have a tab on their website where organizations and individuals can set up fundraisers at the restaurant.
All this stems from a genuine concern for the Ahwatukee community, where Sue and Brian have called Ahwatukee home for the last 15 years.

Kendra Pieratt’s father began working at McDonald’s at 16 and stayed with them until his retirement. Growing up with a parent in the restaurant industry, Kandra and her brother, Chad, worked a lot of serving and bartending jobs. Kendra used her business experience to open their first restaurant, The Old Town Tortilla Factory in Scottsdale in 2001. However, it was when she was working at Intel in 2004 when she got the chance to be the head of her own restaurant after her family purchased Bar Nun in Ahwatukee.
She left Intel and became operating owner at Bar Nun, which only six months later they would rename CK’s (after her and her brother’s first names), and as Pieratt puts it, “the rest is history.”
Having become an Ahwatukee institution, CK’s is the sort of deeply rooted community gathering spot that wins numerous Best Of Ahwatukee awards, such as last year when they won Best Happy Hour.
“We have been Ahwatukee’s neighborhood sports grill for almost 12 years and we love everything about the community,” said Pieratt. “Ahwatukee is such an amazing place with amazing people who strive to support
the family-owned businesses.”
Along with their array of 24 draft beers ranging from national mainstays to local favorites like Four Peaks, San Tan and Cartel, CK’s also has live music on Fridays and
Saturdays and a full menu of food from full fare to appetizers like their boneless chipotle raspberry wings... they even cater for larger parties.
Most of all, CK’s is set apart by the friendly staff that really bring the local atmosphere to the tavern.
“We have such an outgoing and friendly group that work so hard to make our customers happy,” said Pieratt. “Over 40 percent of our staff has been here for over two years, and some staff members have been here almost the entire time we have owned the restaurant.”
At the end of the day, Pieratt said she does it for her customers, who sometimes feel more like family.
“We celebrate their birthdays, graduations and weddings,” she said. “It is wonderful to see the kids that have been eating at CK’s since they were young actually have their graduation parties here.”

Odelay Bagel Co.
12020 S. Warner-Elliot Loop 480-404-3457 | odelaybagel.com
Standing at the west end of the Warner-Elliot Loop is an institution that has quickly been gaining traction in the Ahwatukee community. Odelay Bagel Company started when Ryan Probst played in the Tempe-based band Dry River Yacht Club and worked as an air conditioning technician on the side. With hopes of finding different employment, he left behind the idea of going to law school in favor of working at Jonathan Robbins, a commercial bakery in Tempe.
Learning all he could about the bagel-making game at Jonathan Robbins, Probst took his expertise to the streets, starting a bakery at the corner of Warner Road and Equestrian Trail that relied mostly on word of mouth and visibility for its publicity — and it worked.
Odelay Bagels has grown in popularity since its opening in October with Probst having a strong consortium of dedicated customers who can’t go without his simple homemade recipes, and that is based on a real dedication to his craft.
“At Odelay Bagel Co. all our bagels are precisely mixed, handmade, diligently proofed (a
24-hour process) and boiled in small batches of eight to 10 bagels, in malted water,” Probst said. “We all strive in our own way to interpret and pay respect to a trade that’s been practiced for thousands of years.”
Do not think that Odelay’s menu stops at bagels, however, with their offerings going much further than that.
“Apart from our bagel and cream cheese selection we are currently serving breakfast sandwiches, hummus, a full coffee bar with beans from up to 12 different origins, and two lunch sandwiches: a hot ham and melted brie with a whole grain mustard, toped with granny smith apples, and a turkey, bacon, and Swiss with a homemade cranberry mustardo slaw, tomato, onion, and mayo,” said Probst.
Odelay has also teamed up with Patrick O’Malley at Espresso Italia in Tempe to supply what Probst calls “the best coffee Ahwatukee has seen to date.”
Probst said that he has really enjoyed getting to know new individuals over the last few months and developing relationships with his staff. He enjoys having a constructive impact on the community and looks forward to being a part of positive change in the Ahwatukee food scene.
“I want to be a part of the movement which is changing the way people think about their food,” Probst said. “McDonald’s is losing market share for a reason, and if I can bring the same awareness to bagels then I’m doing my job.”

When it comes to his job as the photography teacher at Desert Vista High School, Chris Klein said he did not choose his job as much as the profession chose him. As an artist, he sought a job in which he could not only perform his crafts but also pass on his collective knowledge to students.
stand their unique value and to share that with others,” Klein said. “In the classroom, I strive to find what each individual student needs to become successful in art and other aspects of life.”
In 2004, Klein created the Summer Arts Academy at Desert Vista, a program that brings together Desert Vista students with students from surrounding middle and elementary schools so the older students can work with and share their craft with the younger students.
“As an artist, I wanted a career to share my passion for the arts, all of the arts, to students,” Klein said. “I wanted to change people’s perspectives about how they see the world, so I chose a career where I could create beautiful works of art, whether by furniture-making, painting, or through the art of photography, and have satisfaction teaching it to others.”
Klein began his career as an educator on the Navajo Nation, teaching art to kindergartners through eighth-graders. It was there that he first met his wife, Danielle, who was also teaching at the school. The two moved to Ahwatukee 20 years ago where Klein got a job at a brand new high school in the area called Desert Vista, which at the time served only ninth and 10th grades.
Seeing the opportunity to develop an arts program at the fledgling school, Klein took it upon himself to organize several classes, and for several years taught both photography and ceramics. Eventually, he would limit himself to the art he was most passionate about, photography, and it is that which he still teaches at Desert Vista. Yet, even after all these years, Klein is still striving to improve his method and learn as much about each student as possible so he can provide a personal and meaningful education.

Klein is also actively working to keep up with the times, paying special attention this year to social media and how his students can inspire others with their photography through social media. Through all the evolution and success, Klein is simply happy to be a part of the community.”
“Ahwatukee, and, specifically the DVHS community, has been so good to us,” said Klein. “I am honored to be recognized for what I have accomplished and am hopeful the Fine Arts Program and all of the amazing teachers I work with everyday will continue to flourish.”

was previously the Tesseract School of Ahwatukee.
At Summit School of Ahwatukee, Vosseller has been able to bring her hands-on approach of teaching to a younger generation of students at Summit, utilizing what she learned from her degree in early childhood education from University of Arizona to provide high quality learning for the Ahwatukee community.
“I believe that children need handson experiences to learn how to apply the
skills they are learning,” said Vosseller. “My teaching partner and I work hard at making sure that students are given the chance to learn and practice using skills in a way that is engaging to them and gives them the opportunity for some real-world, practical experience.”
Vosseller also has endorsements in early childhood education and structured language immersion from the Arizona Department of Education, and said she is constantly seeking out new professional development opportunities.
“We are always on the lookout for ways to freshen up our curriculum with new ideas
and projects,” Vosseller said. “This year’s group of students have different strengths and challenges than last year’s, and we believe that it’s important for each child to make a full year’s growth.
“In order to do that, we need to change our lessons to reflect our students’ strengths, give them opportunities for growth, and allow them to work on projects that are engaging, experiential, and fun.”
This year Vosseller was excited to introduce new opportunities for her students to write non-fiction and utilize non-fiction in ways that should be applicable at later stages in the students’ education careers.
“I love the feeling of helping kids gain confidence in their own abilities and I enjoy helping others,” said Vosseller. “Teaching is the perfect profession for that.”

Summit School of Ahwatukee

For the second year in a row, Summit School of Ahwatukee has won the Best Place To Work category in the Best Of Ahwatukee, and according to Head of School Pat O’Brien, that success is rooted in equal measure in the connections the school has with the community and the high quality staff that makes the institution such a joy to work at.
“I think every staff member at Summit makes this a priority and understands that our work with children gives our life personal meaning and makes the world a better place,” O’Brien said. “Professionally we have many opportunities for collaboration, personal growth and leadership and, at the end of the day; we can say, ‘We accomplished something important today by working together on behalf of all of our students.’”
Located on a six and a half-acre campus with an enrollment of 345 students ranging in grades from preschool through eighth grade, the school has 24 classroom teachers and 11 specialists, making the student-teacher ratio 9.5:1. The majority of students at Summit are from Ahwatukee and the surrounding East Valley area, but they serve families from around the Valley and are proud of the reputation they have built as a high-quality education pro-
vider in Phoenix.
However, do not think that success is getting to their heads, as O’Brien said the school is constantly looking for new ways to adapt to the changing needs of its students.
“We are a very good school and each year we strive to get better,” he said. “We are always looking for ways to improve different areas of the educational program and services to students and families with the understanding change is hard, but the rewards for our students and school are worth the collective effort we put forth to support each other in making change possible.”
As the school continues to provide a high level of education for the students of Ahwatukee and beyond, O’Brien is happy that Summit School of Ahwatukee remains a place that can inspire not only the students, but the faculty as well.
“Teaching is very hard work and education is a very challenging and rewarding calling in life,” O’Brien said. “It takes courage and commitment.”
