LIMESTONE COUNTY www.co.limestone.tx.us

Limestone County, population 22, 849, was established in April 1846 from Robertson County. Fort Parker, near the Navasota River in what is now central Limestone County, was the earliest actual settlement in the area. Limestone County’s original county seat was Springfield, but it was moved to Groesbeck in 1873. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 933 square miles, of which 905 square miles is land and 28 square miles is water.

MEXIA

The city of Mexia is located at the intersection of U.S. 84 and Hwys. 14 and 171. It is approximately 40 miles east of Waco and about 1-1/2 hours south of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Named after General José Antonio Mexía, a Hispanic hero for the Republic of Texas Army during the Texas Revolution, the town was founded near his estate, whose ownership dates to 1833. Mexia was platted in 1870 by the Houston and Texas Central Townsite Company, a sister company of the Houston and Texas Central Railroad. Lots went on sale in 1871, a post office was granted in 1872, and Mexia was incorporated the following year.

A large deposit of natural gas was discovered in 1912 by the Mexia Gas and Oil Company and in 1920, the Mexia Oilfield was found. These discoveries led to rapid population growth in the area. The prosperity generated by the boom, however, only lasted until the 1930s, when the Great Depression forced many people to leave in search of work. The number of residents in the town stabilized at 6,500 in the early 1930s; the 2022 population was 6,868.

WORTHAM

In November 1871, a post office was established in what is now Wortham, but the town name was Long Bottom, a corruption of the original owner’s name (Longbotham). In 1874, the settlement was renamed Wortham in honor of Col. Rice Wortham, a merchant instrumental in convincing the railroad to build through the area. In 1885, Wortham was a small market

The town of Wortham was transformed by an oil boom in the 1920s. The

Non emergency (Freestone County Sheriff’s Office) 903-389-3236

population rose from 1,000 to some 30,000 at the height of the boom in 1925, but the boom ended by late 1927, and by 1929 the population had dropped to around 2,000. In 2022, Wortham had 1,007 residents.

CITY OF GROESBECK

The City of Groesbeck was dedicated as a township by the Houston and

northwest of Mexia in northwestern Limestone County. In 1847, a post

Texas Central Railroad in 1869 and was named for Abraham Groesbeeck,

office called Tewockony Springs was established, named for the

one of its directors. The development of a city government began on

Tawakoni Indians who once lived in the area. The town became known

CITY OF THORNTON

Thornton is on Hwy. 14, 19 miles southwest of Mexia in southwestern Limestone County. Settlement at the site began in 1868. The Houston and Texas Central Railway ran a line from Hearne to Groesbeck through the area in 1870, and Cain Hogan settled on Steele Creek just west of the present townsite. The community became a stop on the railroad and was named for John E. Thornton, another early settler. In 1873 a Thornton post office opened with William L. Wright as postmaster. Soon cotton gins were set up nearby, and ceramics were manufactured from the fine, white clay found in that locality. Agriculture was the mainstay of the area. The 2026 population is estimated at around 430 residents.

Cancer Doesn’t Wait Make time for your 3D mammogram

When it comes to your health, details matter. That’s why we offer 3D mammography, designed to detect breast cancer earlier and more accurately. By using a 3D image instead of a flat 2D image, 3D mammography improves early detection, may reduce unnecessary callbacks and offer clearer answers and greater peace of mind. You aren’t one-dimensional, and neither is our care.

If you’re 40 or over or concerned about your breast health, schedule your mammogram today. 254.562.5332 ParkviewRegional.com/Mammo Scan the QR code.
