Roman’s Oasis Bar and Restaurant, now in the middle of the thriving City of Goodyear, was once in the middle of cotton and corn fields. Self proclaimed ‘Hillbilly’ Roman Comer took over the business in 1986; adding on to the existing 2,800 SF to make what is now 9,000 SF of dining, drinks and dancing.

Roman’s daughter Myra Curtis took over the business in 2015 with the goal of continuing her daddy’s legacy of providing a fun, local community gathering spot. “If you don’t have fun at Roman’s, it’s your own fault”, laughs Curtis. Roman’s Oasis is a destination with entertainment every night of the week.

Live Bands, DJs, Karaoke, Event Poker, both Couples and Line Dance Lessons, and Trivia. Menu items include such delicacies as coconut crusted shrimp, calamari, seared Ahi tuna, green chili chicken pasta and ribeye steaks... as well as ‘fried wonderfuls’.

Reservations for dinner or parties can be made throughout the year; including wedding receptions, birthday parties, and company events (623-512-0852).

As the city grows, so must the roadways. Therefore, Yuma Road is slated to be widened in the near future to accommodate current and future growth. A new building will be established near the current location, on the same property, prior to the existing building being torn down. Since Roman had help from his contemporaries with building and decorating the current building; so Myra wishes to continue the theme of a ‘community build’ when taking down current décor and then placing it at the new building. Community members are encouraged to sign up at Roman’s to assist.

Kokomo, Indiana, native Amanda Houser always loved playing and taking care of her nephews and nieces growing up, which led her to pursuing a teaching career. She earned her degree at NAU by attending classes at Estrella Mountain Community College. Houser explained, “I try to build up my students’ confidence and ask them questions about what their interests are. I try to encourage a positive space where differences are celebrated and learning is fun. I embrace who I am (weird and all) in front of my students, and I think they notice that I am real with them. I think one of the most important parts of teaching is the relationship between the teacher and student. They need to know I see them. I’m here every day doing this with them because I believe in them.”

Illinois native Amy Lowe has been a musician all her life. Sharing that passion is a priority for her.

“My music education philosophy is every student should have a comprehensive music education, even though that doesn’t happen,” she said. “When I came here, I was surprised to see how little the West Valley has. Music programs lend themselves to socioemotional learning. What better for these kids than the arts?” She has an answer, too, for folks who say they cannot sing. “If you can talk, if you don’t think you can sing, you’ve never been taught how,” she said. “Everyone should have a chance to be involved in the arts.”
