rackers’ Tuscan ambience and delectable, signature crepes reflect owners Steve and Veronika Luko’s European heritage. Try the Euro Banana Nutella crepes, or get the traditional house-made Euro crepes alone or combined with a farm-style breakfast. Other favorites include blintzes, cinnamon-swirl French toast and the fluffy Belgian waffle. ary and Colleen Worthington could have put their feet up in Orem, Utah, after retiring as owners of nine successful chain sub shops, but their passion for scratch-made European-style hearth breads wouldn’t let them. They studied at prestigious baking institutes and even developed a proprietary flour blend with Lehi Roller Mills before opening their first Kneaders Bakery and Cafe in 1997. And that knowledge base and flour blend also happens to produce some of the most scrumptious cakes, pies, croissants and cookies in Mesa. Try the best-selling Raspberry Cream Cheese Pie. utch Bros has Mesa residents’ morning and afternoon coffee cravings covered with three drive-through locations. They come for the premium lattes and Americanos but keep coming back for the quick and friendly service. The store also is an oasis on hot days, serving up nitro cold brews, smoothies and freezes. For an extra kick, there are a variety of iced and blended drinks made with the company’s private-label Dutch Bros Blue Rebel energy drink. Brothers Dane and Travis Boersma realized when they founded the Oregonbased chain in 1992 that they were in the relationship business. They emphasized speed, quality and service. Company-owned stores and franchise locations are well-known for supporting local good causes.

“WELCOME TO FIREHOUSE!” There’s never any doubt about where you are after that boisterous greeting from staffers as you walk into this firehouse-theme sub shop. But Firehouse Subs, founded by brothers and former firefighters Chris and Robin Sorensen, didn’t grow to more than 1,100 locations with enthusiastic greetings and slick decor. The unique way the stores steam the subs brings out the flavor of the premium meats and cheeses that an oven just can’t match. You can also feel good knowing that every Hook & Ladder and Spicy Cajun Chicken that you buy helps saves lives. Since 2005, local franchisees and the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation have given more than $40 million in training, support and equipment to hometown heroes.

n-N-Outs are ubiquitous now, but it all started in 1948 as a humble drive-through in California. The chain’s commitment to not growing too fast over the years and always using the freshest, highest-quality ingredients consistently makes it the burger of choice in Mesa. The hand-cut chuck and potatoes are never frozen or pre-packaged, and a microwave oven has never seen the inside of a store. Even the buns are freshly baked from a traditional, slow-rising sponge dough recipe, and then toasted to perfection. The commitment to customer service is just as high, so you can get your burger Protein or Animal style. If you’re really hungry, go for the Double-Double, TripleTriple or Quad-Quad.

ngry Crab Shack is a gloriously messy, crowded and loud place – and Mesa families love it. The Cajun seafood boils and other items are delicious, affordable and nobody ever leaves hungry – or angry. “Here, you eat with your hands,” said local coowner Ronald Lou, a former Arizona State University and NFL standout turned East Valley restaurateur extraordinaire. “If you’ve just had your nails done or bought a new business suit, this might not be your place.” There are a variety of appetizers, soups, sandwiches and Angry Baskets to please every taste for lunch and dinner, and you can even dig into some tasty barbecue at the East Mesa location, but the star is the family-style bag boils. he HUB is a great sports bar that also happens to have a destination-worthy restaurant. The more established East Mesa location is slightly more family-oriented, and kids are captivated by its big treasure chest full of toys. The Stapley HUB opened a couple of years ago and already has a strong local presence and a lively patio atmosphere. Both feature acres of wide-screen TVs and home-grown craft beer and distilled spirits. Families would come just for the wings and burgers, but there are so many good starters, sandwiches, pizzas and entrees that you might have trouble making up your mind. Started by a local group of residents and business professionals, the HUB is the older sibling of the popular UNION Grill & Tap in Gilbert.

The HUB carries the PAC 12 Network, NFL, MLB, NHL and others. Although the sports bar will show a locally-televised UFC event, it doesn’t do pay-per-view UFC. That’s to preserve the family friendly atmosphere and to avoid having to saddle guests with a cover charge. While you’re watching the game, enjoy the HUB’s award-winning wings or one of their many delicious burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and calzones.

ince 1986, Mesa families have celebrated birthdays, graduations, anniversaries and other special occasions at Vito’s. It’s also the place you go on Friday night. The original owners retired in 2009, but current owners Ryan and Alexis Vickery – loyal patrons at the time – never missed a beat when it came to carrying on the tradition. They not only want neighbors to enjoy the fine food, but also have a lot of laughs. The chicken cannelloni is a crowd favorite – a creamy blend of chicken, mushrooms and spinach served with house marinara. The linguine pescatore – heaped with clams, mussels, salmon and scallops – and the lobster ravioli are winners, too.

Dough and sauces are made in-house with the freshest ingredients. Nine-, 12- and 14-inch sizes also are available. amilies love Texas Roadhouse because, well, the kids can throw the peanut shells on the floor. Never underestimate the entertainment value of that! Moms and dads love the consistently good (never frozen) hand-cut steaks and the ability to order small or big cuts. The choice sirloin for example, comes in 6-, 8-, 11-, and 16-ounce portions. Although waits can be lengthy, once you’re seated the service is lightning fast. Fresh bread appears instantly, and appetizers and salads soon follow. Texas Roadhouses strive to be good community members, too. That’s why you’ll often bump into staff members (Roadies) and mascot Andy the Armadillo at Mesa fundraisers and school events.

he HUB checks all the boxes when it comes to a great sports bar – great atmosphere, great wings, great drink specials, great pizza – but the ship would have never got out of port without a great burger. After the tough process of selecting one of the 10 mouth-watering half-pounders, you need to ponder the pretzel, cheddar jalapeno, ciabatta or country white bun. Then, if you’re feeling prosperous and expansive, you might as well throw a fried egg on there for an extra $1.49. Go for The Classic or throw caution to the wind with the spicy Devil, the Popper Burger, Peanut Butter or Holy Bacon Batman. The Mac Attack, topped with green-chili mac ‘n’ cheese and bacon, speaks for itself, and a great veggie burger option is available, too.

1860 S. Stapley Drive, 480-494-2699 1925 S. Sossaman Road, 480-718-5440 hubgrill.com he two HUBs are the happiest places in Mesa from 2:12 p.m. to 6:12 p.m. Monday through Friday. The sports bars’ lively happy hours feature beer-sampler paddles starting at $5, which is a great way to try out the many craft brews and nibble on some appetizers. Patrons also enjoy $2 discounts on HUB shots, HUB drinks and certain appetizers. Well drinks and domestic beers are $3, while house wines, call drinks and some craft beers are $4. Why the 2:12 starting time? It refers to the HUB’s “212 in all we do” customer-service philosophy. At 211 degrees, water is very hot, explains operations manager Katie Ellering. At 212, water boils and creates steam, which can move a locomotive. “That extra degree of service makes all the difference,” Ellering said.

ou don’t get to be as big and beloved as Famous Dave’s without doing a lot of things right. Dave Anderson made sure he had everything right when he opened his first store in 1994. He knew plenty about barbecue just growing up around street-corner vendors and their homemade 55-gallon drum smokers. But that wasn’t enough. He traveled the South extensively and spent countless hours testing recipes and methods. The result is your choice of lip-smacking, St. Louisstyle or baby-back ribs, which can be served Memphisstyle “naked” or slathered in sauce. Other favorites include Georgia chopped pork, Texas beef brisket, barbecue chicken and hot link sausage, which is best accompanied by an ice-cold beer.

ver the years, many restaurant empires and dining traditions have been created in the East Valley by New York families in search of a decent pizza, bagel or fill-in-the-blank. For Floyd and Judy Anderson, who escaped Buffalo in 1978 with their four daughters, the answer was wings. Native’s traditional bone-in wings can be ordered in packs of five, 10, 15, 20 and 50, and if you’re having trouble deciding between the 20-plus sauce and dry rub combos, the sports grill will happily serve individual samples. ackyard Taco got its name because owners Ruben and Maricela Alvarez, originally from Mazatlan, started out by making tacos al carbon over mesquite grills in friends’ yards. As word spread, complete strangers began showing up at these gatherings. Chang’s is a billion-dollar brand with more than 200 restaurants. Like all of them, the Superstition Springs shop is a scratch kitchen. There’s a whole lot of dicing of farm-fresh ingredients, hand-rolling of dim sum and wok wizardry going on back there. Signature classics include the Chang’s Lettuce Wraps, Mongolian Beef, Crispy Honey Shrimp and Cecilia’s Dumplings. Cecilia Chiang is credited with introducing America to authentic northern Chinese cooking at her Chinatown restaurant in San Francisco. Her son, Philip, continuing her legacy at his own bistro, was persuaded by a regular customer to open a restaurant in Scottsdale in 1993. His name was Paul Fleming, and that was how the P.F. ernando Rios and friends set out to build a better mousetrap – or, in their case, a better Sonoranstyle restaurant – in 2003 in Gilbert. It wasn’t until Mesa’s warm welcome in 2009, at the height of the Great Recession, that they truly knew they were on to something. Today, the budding local chain has a cafe in Chandler and just opened a store in Queen Creek. The lunch and dinner menu, based on Dad Alfred’s and Mom Nana’s recipes, is anchored by 10 traditional combo platters. Portions are huge. Favorite specialties include Alfredo’s Green Chile Pork, the Pollo Rico and the Sonoran Enchiladas. Many Mesa families also go for the Faja Pasta, a clever and delicious marriage of Mexico and Italy.

olfland Sunsplash is every Mesa family’s favorite place to cool off because it appeals to all age and thrill levels. You’ll climb about seven stories to get to the starting gate of Double Dare, Thunder Falls and Storm Rider. If you just want to chill, head for the wave pool or float the lazy river. If you have a large group, consider renting a cabana for a resort-like experience. There are splash pads and shallow pools for toddlers. The park also offers three 18-hole miniature golf courses, a giant arcade, go karts, bumper cars and bumper boats.

he dinosaurs that roar and the threestory waterfall make a big first impression on kids at the Arizona Museum of Natural History. But adults appreciate the opportunity to view one of the best collections of Mesoamerican and Hohokam artifacts in Arizona. You also can explore the state’s rich mining and mineral history, and review the role Arizona has played in the movies over the years. Grownups enjoy the annual Beer N’ Bones bash, a boozy blend of science and fun that has become the Titanosaurus of East Valley fundraisers. And due to popular demand, there will be two Dino Egg Hunts this spring, April 12 and April 19.

eaving through the Usery Mountains in east Mesa, 1,800 feet above the desert floor, Las Sendas has defined the high-desert golf experience since 1995, when famed architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the challenging layout. Las Sendas plays 5,188 yards from the forward tees and 7,004 from the tips, plus offers four tee boxes between to suit all levels of handicaps. “If you play the right tees, it’s fine for all levels of golf,” said Rick Crowson, director of golf. “It’s definitely a shot-making course. Our views are spectacular and the golf conditions are pristine.” Daily fees at Las Sendas range from high to low depending on the season, but various membership packages entice Mesa families and retirees to enjoy year-round golf and social activities.

month after Nelson Estate Jewelers opened last year, a woman came into the showroom with a 19th century ring that was made for her grandmother. It was missing a sapphire that the big chain stores couldn’t or didn’t want to bother replacing. Thanks to David Nelson’s experience and connections in the industry, he knew a cutter who could duplicate the old-fashioned artistry of the cut and match the other stones. That’s how you make a customer for life and become the best new business in Mesa. Nelson and his wife, Aubrey, who live in Dobson Ranch, sold a couple of rental properties and a cache of collectibles to give the business a running start. Mesa customers are embracing their ethical, transparent pricing and unique collection of estate and designer pieces.

I

t’s a bit of a shock in this age to hear a teenager enthusiastically say “My pleasure” when you say “Thank you” at a Chick-fil-A counter or the drive-through. It’s a manifestation of the customer-focused mission that permeates every one of the chain’s more than 2,200 stores. The idea sprang from a five-star experience that founder Truett Cathy had at a hotel. Cathy learned the value of listening to customers as an 8-year-old in the Great Depression. He was buying six-packs of Cokes and selling bottles for a nickel door-to-door but not having much luck. A neighbor suggested he ice the bottles down and business took off. Now you know what to do: Eat Mor Chikin. Moo.

ince most teachers at the East Valley Institute of Technology are recruited from business and industry, they’re accustomed to performance-based pay. And since EVIT is a school of choice, instructors have a lot of incentive to retain students, graduate them and place them in high-demand, well-paying jobs. “If our teachers are happy, our students are happy,” said EVIT Superintendent Dr. Sally Downey. “Our teachers and support staff are equal. Everybody pulls together. It’s what I’m most proud of.” The average EVIT teacher earns about $52,000 per year in base salary, with the ability to earn more through performance incentives. It’s a big reason why EVIT boasts a graduation rate of 98 percent – way above the state average – and two out of three go to college.

hen David Nelson got his first job at Zale’s as a 15-year-old in Wisconsin, he didn’t know that this was going to become his life’s work. After attending Arizona State University, he worked for big names like Jared and Kay and prominent independent East Valley jewelers. He came to realize that the business model – high everyday prices with periodic sales events – was broken. Nelson Estate Jewelers, which he opened last year with wife Aubrey, is turning that model upside-down with transparent, everyday pricing and by making one happy customer at a time. The showroom displays a dazzling collection of late 19th and early 20th century vintage estate pieces and modern designs and will work with you to custom design a special ring or pendant. esa families with dogs and cats that get nervous about daycare and boarding rely on Critter Caretakers for their fur babies in the comfort of their own homes. Longtime owner Dawn Dubelbeis sold the business last summer. But she’s carrying on as a sitter, and new owners Liza and Tony Bacon are making sure that a whole lot of tummy rubbing, ear scratching and snuggling is still going on. The Bacons were career officers for the Metropolitan Police in London, but are passionate about pets and have been vacationing in the Valley for 15 years. Liza said everything fell together selling their U.K. house and buying Critter Caretakers, which allows them to stay year-round now with a business visa. “It was like it was meant to be,” she said.

Those who favor a more hands-off approach sign up for one of the Poolwerx’s four Poolrite maintenance packages. The Platinum level provides thorough weekly cleanings with routine checks for water chemistry. The Silver package is ideal for owners who don’t mind vacuuming or have pools with automatic systems. Perhaps more important, Great Clips knows what its family customers, senior citizens and young professionals don’t want – long waits, TVs, music, drinks, facials, waxing and color and nail services. You never need an appointment at Great Clips, but many patrons take advantage of online check-in through their home computers or the easy-to-use smartphone app. Customers also like the chain’s cloud-based Clip Notes technology, which allows every stylist to enter haircut details for each customer. n practice in Mesa for 25 years, Dr. Paul Sandstrom’s longtime patients know the drill about personal maintenance – because the greatest general, reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry skills in the world won’t amount to much if patients don’t do their homework. He returns the favor by traveling extensively to keep up on the latest techniques, procedures and technology. Sandstrom’s services are so comprehensive that it’s unlikely you’ll ever need a referral. The office doesn’t use answering machines and builds enough slack in the schedule to accommodate emergencies. The doctor also has a knack for putting reluctant new patients at ease. “There’s no reason to feel embarrassed because we’ve seen it all,” he said. “The best part is you’re here and we can help you get better.”

D

r. Nathan R. Yetter and his team love it when patients come in with a smile. It shows they’re pleased with their progress, or maybe that they’re anticipating a turn at the office’s soft-serve ice cream station, he jokes. An East Valley native and Arizona State University grad, Yetter said today’s technology and products, such as Invisalign, Invisalign Teen and clear braces, create choices and allow him to better tailor care for each patient. Yetter also provides surgical orthodontics to correct a bad bite, malocclusion and jaw abnormalities. Yetter received his doctorate of dental surgery at University of the Pacific School of Dentistry.

iberty Arts Academy takes its middle name very seriously, offering 3- and 4-year-olds in pre-K to eighth-graders a full curriculum of art, including drawing, painting, sculpting and art history, as well as music twice a week. In addition to fine arts, Liberty rigorously schools young learners in the reading, writing, math and technology basics. And students aren’t sitting at desks all day either. “We really encourage a lot of movement, brain breaks and a lot of play,” said principal Brady Wald. Wald said the school’s motto is BARK to Excellence: Brave, Attentive, Responsible and Kind.

ince 1964, Christ the King students have been matriculating to just about every public and private high school in the East Valley, bringing with them a strong foundation of spirituality, academic excellence and humanitarian service. At first glance, the school resembles the Catholic schools of yesteryear. There are uniforms and one classroom per grade level – Pre-K through eighth grade – and students receive a healthy dose of religious instruction daily. Parents like that, but they also like seeing high-tech Smartboards in every room, the computer and science labs, and upper-level students walking around with Chromebooks and iPads. There are accelerated programs and opportunities to participate in band, sports, clubs and other electives.

iberty Arts Academy teachers make sure their 200-plus students know reading, writing, math and basic technology inside and out, but their pre-Keighth grade charges also are exposed to a healthy dose of drawing, sculpting, art history and music every week. “Fine arts are a large part of who we are and what we do,” said principal Brady Wald. Wald said the public charter school’s seventh- and eighth-graders are encouraged to mentor younger students and spend extra time with kids who may be struggling. Many Liberty graduates move on to Desert Hills High School in Gilbert and Apache Trail High School in Apache Junction, charter schools also managed by the Leona Group.

t takes a litter of Mountain Lion mascots to keep spirits high at such a big school as Red Mountain. With all of those fall and winter sports, home and away games, pep rallies and fundraisers – and now with spring sports in full swing – a lone cat can get a little burned out. And maybe wander off, as happened a few years ago. It took all of the bio med students’ CSI skills to track the missing feline down. In a hilarious student RMTV segment at the time, cheerleaders and pommies weren’t too keen on finding the furry attention-grabber, but most students were desolate. “He was the only one who appreciated our music,” lamented one marching band member.

ids in Felice Davis’ kindergarten class at Mendoza are learning the rudiments of reading, writing and math. But they’re really learning how to become successful students. With 20 years of experience, the last 14 at Mendoza, Davis has taught up to third grade, but she believes kindergarten is the most critical. “You want them to have the most positive experience they can,” she said. “It’s such an important year.” Davis is a Mesa girl through and through and a shining product of Mesa Public Schools. Her daughter and son also attended Mendoza and are enjoying their college experiences. “Mendoza is a huge family,” she said. “It’s a nice place to raise kids.”

oe Sullivan’s juniors and seniors don’t really need to be in his mad-scientist jewelry laboratory. It’s an elective for many, and those who need fine-art credits have options of stained glass, drawing, ceramics and photography. Yet he sees about 150 students per day over five periods. It’s that kind of cool class that Mesa parents – and Sullivan himself – wish they could have taken when they were in their teens. “Mesa really set this up right,” he said. “I’m pretty lucky to teach it.” Sullivan insists that students think of and draw original designs for rings and chains before they get to the cool stuff of torches, soldering, silversmithing and stones. A former scholarship kicker and punter for Mesa Community College and ASU, Sullivan also coached the Toros track and field team for many years.

ince 2011, Dance Studio C has been turning toddlers and up into accomplished dancers and instilling confidence and a sense of teamwork along the way. Starting out in a garage, the four-room studio bustles with all kinds of ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop and tumbling classes. Students are taught by passionate, experienced teachers and choreographers and by director Chaney Gifford-Lucas. The Princess Combo classes are especially popular. Tots learn basic techniques with the ability to wear princess dresses once a month and learn fairytale dances. The studio also teaches pom, latin ballroom and offers an advanced competitive dance company.
