The Osaka Japanese Steakhouse says it serves modern Japanese-style cuisine. The restaurant is divided between teppanyaki dining, a sushi bar, a cocktail bar and a traditional dining area.

Osaka is famous for specialty sushi rolls like the Godzilla Roll, Rockstar Roll and Citrus Roll. Be careful not to over-order because the sushi portions are generous and thick with rice.

Happy hour is tremendously popular and includes drinks and sushi rolls. It can be hard to find good sushi in Arizona, but Osaka has some of the freshest seafood in town.

That doesn’t happen at Draft Sports Grill, where owners Jill and Justin Heinz make sure there’s something for everyone.

Tipplers get 22-ounce domestic tap beers for $3 Monday through Friday 2-7 p.m. Notyour-everyday craft beer pours are discounted $1. Mules made with premium spirits are $5.

Nibblers need to pay attention to what day it is. Monday is wing night. Tuesday is taco and trivia night – and the specials keep on coming through the week and weekend.

“We see happy hour as an opportunity to reward our guests,” Justin Heinz said.

BEST PLACE TO WATCH THE GAME

FIRST PLACE

Sports Grill

1130 W Grove Ave., Suite 106 • 480-588-8988 or draftgrill.com

Justin Heinz, owner of Draft Sports Grill, put a lot of thought into the size and placement of all the huge flat-screen and projection TVs he would need when building out his bar two years ago.

He plotted the seating layout and literally sat in every chair in the place to ensure that all patrons would get an immersive, 360-degree viewing experience and that there wouldn’t be a bad seat in the house.

That kind of attention to detail has made Draft a hit with nearby Mesa neighborhoods and other East Valley sports fans who will drive a few extra miles to take in a big Chicago Cubs game or a wild UFC night.

“Our customers make us the best place to watch the game,” Heinz said. “We provide the great spot, and they provide the energy.”

“This was my first serving job,” she said. “I love it. The owners are amazing. The regulars are so nice. It’s a really fun place to work. There’s never any drama.”

A newcomer to hospitality when the restaurant opened two years ago – the small chain’s first location outside California –Sanchez was hired as a host.

But, a busy morning cafe in Mesa is inevitably going to end up short-staffed sooner or later, and Sanchez was pressed into serving. Now, Sanchez is a mentor for new servers. Her advice: Be yourself and don’t stress. A recipe for success.

Mesa is home to three popular InN-Out Burgers. The chain’s history began in 1945, but Arizona wouldn’t see its first location until 2000.

Despite being a national chain, quality is still of the highest importance. In-N-Out Burger does not freeze, pre-package, or microwave its food. It continues to use meat free of additives, fillers, or preservatives.

The Mesa locations cut their potatoes in-house and still use ice cream for shakes. If shopping is on the to-do list, make sure to visit the In-N-Out Burger by Fiesta Mall to bypass the food court lines.

People love to shop here because they can find what they’re looking for.”

There are actually two stores, a small boutique that houses the higher-end items and a 14,000-square-foot warehouse bazaar. What’s inside?

“It’s soup to nuts. We have everything, sporting goods … a man cave with all sorts of men’s clothing, women’s clothing, bedding, a garden center” and more, Humphrey said. It’s a truly unique shopping experience, with all profits going to the Sunshine Acres Children’s Home.

EVIT

1601 W. Main St. • evit.com

Since most teachers at the East Valley Institute of Technology are recruited from business and industry, they’re accustomed to performance-based pay. And since EVIT is a school of choice, instructors have a lot of incentive to retain students, graduate them and place them in well-paying jobs.

“If our teachers are happy, our students are happy,” said EVIT Superintendent Dr. Sally Downey. “Our teachers and support staff are equal. Everybody pulls together. It’s what I’m most proud of.”

It’s a big reason why EVIT boasts a graduation rate of 98 percent – more than 20 percentage points higher than the state average – and two out of three go on to college. Within one year of graduating from one of EVIT’s more than 40 programs, 85 percent of students are in jobs, in college or in the military.

Sloan Park has been a home run for the city and the Chicago Cubs since opening in 2014 as baseball’s largest spring training stadium, with a 15,000-seat capacity. The only problem is demand still outstrips supply after the Cubs finally won a World Series in 2016, ending a 108-year drought.

Expect a great crowd, great weather but no bargains until the fall, when the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League take over the park and tickets are much cheaper.

When combined with revamped Riverview Park and the new Rio Salado Pathway, this makes for some strong recreational choices at one facility.

The park has several family-friendly features, with attractions for children of all ages, a community fishing lake and a 50-foot tall climbing tower. The pathway along the Salt River is surprisingly scenic and will soon connect Tempe Marketplace and the Loop 101 to Hohokam Stadium, the Cubs’ former longtime ballpark and now home to the Oakland Athletics.

When you lose a loved one, it is one of those times in life when you can feel lost, or adrift–not sure of which way to turn and how to make it through. You need to know that there’s someone there that you can trust, someone who feels like family. A funeral director who cares can make a huge difference in your comfort level, and allow you to the safety of knowing that your best interests are being considered. This is the benefit of choosing Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery for your final arrangements and those of your loved ones.

Family Owned and Operated

Mountain View Funeral Home understands the concept of family: since 1951, the Coury family have been operating the family funeral home under the guiding philosophy of being of service to members of the community in their time of need. Now managed by the Second and third generation of Coury’s, Mountain View Funeral Home is a Mesa, AZ tradition with professionally trained and licensed staff members all with the stated goal of ensuring your loved one receives the dignified memorial service that they deserve.

Community Education

A family funeral home takes services a step further by offering education before a loss as well as caring and compassion during a period of mourning. Funeral directors and their team will help you understand the meaning of different parts of the memorial

Family Funeral - Comfort From Trust

service, the differences between cremation and interment, and provide you with a wealth of additional options including beautiful touches such as a release of white doves after the service.

Your Personal Concierge

When a loved one passes from the mortal coil, you can feel overwhelmed with details, so another benefit that family funeral homes can offer is access to a concierge to help with everything from florists, hotels, restaurants and even car services. Our professional staff is available to assist with any special needs six days per week.

Finding the right fit for a funeral home is important; you want to know that not only is your loved one being treated with dignity, but that you and your family will feel comfortable and supported in your decisions during this time. Selecting Mountain View Funeral Home and Cemetery is one way to ensure that you are using a family funeral home who will go above and beyond your expectations.

We believe our work is a “mission of service” and it’s a privilege to help a family during the most difficult time in their life.

Mountain View was considered the standard in sports athletics in Arizona for a long time, and while there has been a bit a step back on the field, the Toro remains strong. It’s a great caricature that epitomizes what it means to be part of the Mountain View community.
