‘Best public course’ an economic boost

It’s twice as high as the center of the Valley at 2,100 feet and at the top of the list when it comes to rankings. Quintero Golf Club, now a public course, was rated as the best public course in Arizona in 2017 by Golf Digest and Golf Weekly and in 2016 by Arizona Foothills Magazine. It is ranked No. 1 in Arizona by GolfAdvisor.com.

Its hills and valleys are praised by golfers on Twitter who travel to the

Valley just to play the best courses.

From downtown Peoria, it takes about 40 minutes to get to Quintero, which is off State Route 74 west of the Lake Pleasant turnoff.

For general manager Mike Poe, who lives in Scottsdale, it takes the same amount of time to get to work via the Loop 101, Interstate 17 and State Route 74. But, after seven years at Quintero, he is getting used to the drive and happy where his commute takes him.

West Valley chambers unite with a voice in public policy

The West Valley Chambers of Commerce Alliance (WVCCA), composed of the six West Valley Chambers, has partnered with Fennemore Craig to represent the collective interests of businesses in the West Valley on public policy issues.

Arizona tax law (ARS 43-1089.01) allows individual taxpayers a tax credit up to $200, or up to $400 as a married couple filing a joint return. If married taxpayers file separate returns, each spouse may claim half of the credit that would have been allowed on a joint return. In return, the donor is able to get the exact amount back from the state when filing a return.

A tax credit may only be used to the extent it reduces a tax liability to zero.

I am Peoria: Bob Alford — Veterans Furniture Warehouse

One of my favorite things about the end of the year and the holiday season is the way that it brings out the best in people.

Whether it is the patriotism we see around Veterans Day, the increased gratitude we see around Thanksgiving, or the noticeable spirit of giving in December, I’m always taken back by the way our community comes together to support one another.

Someone who embodies this spirit of giving is Bob Alford. Bob is a Peoria resident and a U.S. Army veteran who is doing yeoman’s work throughout the year to support veterans in need.

After a successful career as a software engineer and an entrepreneur, Bob and his wife, Muriel, spent a lot of time searching for the perfect place to retire. The Alfords were looking for a vibrant and growing city where they could remain active and give back, and after visiting 32 different communities throughout the United States, Peoria was the clear choice.

The Alfords have been Trilogy residents for 11 years. For the last six years, Bob has served on the Trilogy Council Liaison Committee. As he rounds out his final year of service as the chair of the committee, Bob is excited to put even more energy toward one of his greatest passions: supporting homeless veterans.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs conducts an annual count to identify the impact of homelessness upon our veterans.

Its latest figures indicate that on a single night in January 2018,

nearly 38,000 veterans experienced homelessness, with more than 23,000 living unsheltered and on the street.

While the Veterans Administration is working to get these men and women off the streets and into dependable housing, the VA does not have the means to provide basic household goods or even a bed.

Without these necessities, veterans are at an exceptionally high risk of returning to the streets. Fortunately, here in Arizona, a group of veterans is working to fill this gap.

The Veterans Furniture Center (VFC) is a volunteer-based, veteran-run nonprofit dedicated to assisting formerly homeless veterans as they transition to permanent housing. After being notified by the VA about a veteran who is transitioning to permanent housing, the VFC steps in to supply the veteran with the essentials they need to build a home. Its mission is to help veterans get back on their feet, so they may become fully-functioning members of society.

The VFC has transitioned from donated, second-hand furniture to providing a complete kit of new furniture and household goods.

It has a growing list of corporate, not-for-profit, and individual donors. The VFC operates a centrally located warehouse near I-17 and

Grand Avenue staffed by volunteers, most of whom are from the Peoria area.

Through generous donations, the VFC is able to provide furniture and basic household items, such as a bed, dresser, couch, recliner, television, table, kitchenware, and linens. The items provided are a gift — a thank you — to those who served our country.

The VFC plays a critical role in the effort to successfully transition homeless veterans into permanent housing so they may begin new productive lives. Since 2009, the VFC has assisted more than 2,900 needy veterans and is currently helping more than 400 veterans a year. One hundred percent of the donations to the VFC’s Support a Veteran Program are used to purchase the items the veterans need.

Northern Parkway moves closer to Peoria border

Peoria’s Pine District Councilmember Carlo Leone fought it from the beginning, but all of his arguments failed to stop construction of Northern Parkway. He had the backing of his constituents, but that was not enough to stop the major thoroughfare’s construction. It started farther west at the Loop 303 and is now preparing to enter the boundaries of the city of Peoria.

Arizona Department of Transportation, the lead agency for the project, sent the following traffic advisory for public notification: Construction to begin on Northern Parkway between Dysart Road and 111th Avenue on Jan. 7.

Crews will begin Jan. 7 on the construction of Northern Parkway between Dysart Road and 111th Avenue.

Northern Parkway construction starts Jan. 7 just west of the city of Peoria. Residents are being notified of traffic conditions that may be affected by the project.

Dysart Road and El Mirage Road. This will widen Northern Avenue to become two lanes in each direction. Crews will also install traffic signals at the frontage road intersections of Dysart Road and El Mirage Road, as well as a drainage basin south east of the intersection at El Mirage Road. A new traffic signal will be installed at the 115th Avenue

alignment. Additionally, crews will construct a four-lane bridge over the Agua Fria River.

Businesses are open and business access will be maintained throughout the construction process.

ADOT asks commuters to obey traffic control signs and watch for lane restrictions. In addition, schedule extra

time to get to a destination, as there may be traffic delays.

The Northern Parkway project is a partnership between Maricopa County, the cities of El Mirage, Glendale and Peoria, ADOT and the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG).

City holds month-long celebration of MartinLuther King Jr.

The city of Peoria will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. all month long with music, artists and events.

On Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Peoria will host a free concert featuring Walt Richardson. The concert will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. at Peoria Centennial Plaza, 9875 N. 85th Ave. Richardson has been playing his own take on folk, reggae and rock for more than 30 years. In 2014, he was inducted into Arizona’s Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame.

The following day, Jan. 22, Peoria will host its annual Unity Walk from City Hall to Peoria Centennial Plaza.

From 2 to 3 p.m. Feb. 5, artist John Clark will be speaking at Sunrise Mountain Library. For more than 40 years, his efforts have been directed toward commissioned works for Astronomy magazine, NASA and the U.S. Air Force Art Program. Clark is the Jo Kotula Chair of the American Society of Aviation Artists, a past president and Artist Fellow of the society.

As another year comes to a close, it is time to look back at the top 10 stories of 2018 that were most influential, controversial and discussed for the city of Peoria and the West Valley.

The year began with a long-time coach being ousted from his longtime job, the groundbreaking of a new medical center, creation of a new fire and medical department, a new police chief and increased business in the city.

As we close 2018 and look forward to 2019, here are the top 10 stories as selected by Peoria Times that made the most noise and controversy during the past 12 months.

1. Groundbreaking for $70 million medical center Maricopa Integrated Health System and the city of Peoria celebrated the

groundbreaking Jan. 29 of the new West Valley Primary and Specialty Care Center. When complete, the facility will address the health needs of the rapidly growing West Valley with a wide range of services.

mission allowed the Special Health Care District Board of Directors and MIHS leadership to begin the reinvention of our health care system, with state-ofthe-art facilities like this West Valley Primary and Specialty Care Center.”

Citing the need to meet the demand for health care services in the West Valley, Steve Purves, president and CEO of MIHS, said the expansion also will bring a much better experience for patients and visitors.

“This is truly a momentous occasion for us – the first project in our Care Reimagined initiative that will fulfill our commitment to provide ‘exceptional care, without exception, every patient, and every time’ to the residents of the West Valley and beyond,” Purves said.

The 120,000-square-foot center will be located on a 20-acre site at Grand Avenue and Cotton Crossing. When the West Valley Primary and Specialty Care Center opens in early 2020, approximately 320 staff will be dedicated to the site, treating an expected daily volume of about 255 patients and visitors.

2. Police Chief Minter retires, city names new police chief Police Chief Roy Minter announced his retirement in May and new Police Chief Arthur J. Miller was introduced as his replacement in July.

Minter served as police chief of Peoria for more than seven years.

“Chief Minter has truly left a mark on not just Peoria, but many Valley cities.

His leadership has been instrumental in modernizing Peoria’s policing efforts,” Peoria City Manager Jeff Tyne said. “His successful launch and implementation of the community policing approach has greatly helped our city to forge important partnerships with community groups and local businesses, all with the goal of building safe environments for our residents. The result has led to Peoria’s reputation as one of the safest communities in the Valley.”

In his time at the police department, Minter transformed it into a highly professional, community-oriented agency. Some of his most important accomplishments include achieving the Gold Standard Accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, opening the Pinnacle Peak Public Safety Facility, implementing new technologies, such as body-worn cameras and Smart 911, reducing crime rates, and enhancing the city’s community policing programs and partnerships.

“Over the last seven years, Chief Minter has built strong partnerships with leaders throughout the Valley and has been the ever-present face of public safety to our residents,” Mayor Cathy Carlat said. “His leadership has contributed to a city where families feel safe in their homes and in their neighborhoods. His retirement is hard-earned, and the city council and I wish him all the best as he heads into this exciting next phase.”

After a national search brought in more than 50 applicants, the city of Peoria announced Aug. 7 that South Pasadena Police Chief Arthur J. Miller has been selected to replace the city’s retiring Police Chief Roy Minter.

“Yes, we have a conditional offer out there but there are additional things to be done, but we are prepared to have (Miller) as our next police chief,” City Manager Jeff Tyne said.

Miller, 61, has been police chief in South Pasadena since 2013 and has worked the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Police Department. He earned a bachelor’s in business administration from University of Phoenix and a master’s in organizational leadership at Woodbury University.

“Nearly two years ago, my wife, Linda, and I visited our friends that lived in Peoria,” Miller said. “We really liked the neighborhood, people and the beautiful vistas. We knew then that Peoria was the right fit for us. We came back a month later and bought a house.”

He began as a watch commander in 1999 and spent nearly 10 years working as an ombudsman, working on internal police department conflicts, as well as in the public information office.

He has also worked as a recruiter while managing reserve officers and leading the internal affairs division.

Miller left the LAPD in 2013 to become police chief of South Pasadena, where he has been for nearly six years.

He has been a sworn officer for more than 40 years and has won the LAPD’s three highest awards for bravery, including the Medal of Valor, the Police Medal and the Police Star.

He said he is aiming to jump in when he starts and plans to immerse himself in the department.

“I hope the officers and staff will get to know me rather quickly and I need to hear from all staff to understand how we can work together to make the police department and city greater than it already is,” Miller said. “I am committed to being involved in the community, and I plan to be visible and accessible. have already spoken with (Mayor Cathy Carlat) and councilmembers and have asked each of them to show me their council districts. I want to have a better understanding of the unique needs of each council district. Having this understanding will help me better serve our community and I want to ensure that proper police service is provided at every level.”

The city of Peoria had narrowed its search to four finalists for the position and Tyne said the selection was not easy.

“All four finalists were outstanding in their own right,” Tyne said. “What we saw with (Miller) was someone who carried certain skill sets and attributes for our community. He leads by example and is extremely personable and knowledgeable in law enforcement and trends in law enforcement, and we feel fortunate to have found someone like that.”

Tyne added that Miller’s experience was a key aspect in his selection to replace Minter.

3. Council approves budget amendment for fire-medical department In a 7-0 vote March 6, council approved a budget amendment for the fire-medical department’s ambulance service phase II implementation.

The city already has two ambulances out of Fire Stations 191 and 195. The additional two ambulances and 14 firefighters would initially cost $1.228 million for startup and about $1.6 million for ongoing operational costs.

For fiscal year 2018, a budget amendment of $1.4 million was approved. That includes all of the one-time funding of $1.1 million and one-fourth of ongoing funds of $307,000, which represents the remaining three months of fiscal year 2018 for salaries and benefits. The $1.4 million will come from general fund reserves.

In the fiscal year 2019 budget, the fire-medical department will request $1.6 million for the phase II ambulance operations. Once operational, costs are expected to be offset by revenue received from patient transports.

4. Leone, Hunt win re-election Carlo “Rocky” Leone came out on top in the Pine District council race, winning with 56.2 percent of the vote.

Denette Dunn received 33.32 percent of the vote, while Randal Rains came away with 10 percent.

Leone said, “I just want to thank everybody who voted for me and those who didn’t — they voted. I’m very happy.”

The win marks a sixth term for Leone, who will end up serving 24 years on council in 2022.

In other remarks, Leone said, “It was just great. She (Dunn) depended more on endorsements. I don’t believe in having endorsements from people who can’t vote for me. I’ll keep doing what I’ve been doing. My door is open.”

Dunn did not respond to phone calls or texts requesting comment.

5. PUSD bond rejected by voters Peoria Unified School District’s $189.2 million school bond proposal was losing as voters spoke loudly for the second election in a row as they appeared to deny the PUSD bond request.

One incumbent and one newcomer won election to the PUSD Governing Board and three incumbents to the Governing Board of the Maricopa County Community College District were all re-elected.

The totals are unofficial and were taken from the Maricopa County Recorder’s election web page.

After narrowly missing getting a bond on the 2017 ballot, the Governing Board placed the $189.2 million bond on this year’s ballot and it appears voters unofficially denied it with a 55-45 vote against approval. It was the second time in two years voters have denied a bond in PUSD. In November of 2016, voters denied a $198 million bond by a 19 percent margin. It was the first time a PUSD bond had failed since before 2003.

“We are cautiously optimistic. While we recognize that it would very difficult to overcome this deficit, there are still hundreds of thousands of ballots left to count,” PUSD spokesperson Danielle Airey said. “We will diligently watch for the remaining votes to come in.”

If the bond were approved, it would have kept the bond tax rate at or below $1.60 (per $100 assessed valuation) and would have funded facility modernization, land purchase and new construction for student growth, technology, arts education, career and technical education and student transportation.

It also would have allocated $83 million for facility modernization and site improvements, and $75.9 million for student growth for the purchase of land and new construction for one high school and construction of a new facility for Peoria Traditional School.

“Last Friday at 11, the Cactus Administration informed me they want to take the program in a different direction.

I have resigned my position as the head varsity football coach at Cactus High School today, Dec. 27, 2017,” Fetkenhier said in a post on Twitter.

After 33 seasons, in which Fetkenhier-coached teams have only had one losing season, he leaves as one of the top coaches in state history with a 316-96-3 record and one of only seven coaches to reach 300 wins.

Minutes after the tweet, Fetkenhier added, “Coach wishes to thank all players and parents for their great support of the program and him for these many years.”

He moved to Glendale after being laid off from his job in Michigan 33 years ago and became the head coach of the Cobras.

“I’ve been here for over 33 years,” said Fetkenhier earlier this season, “and I have been here ever since and it is the only school I’ve ever worked at in the state of Arizona. I think our community and students expect us to win and we, also, expect to win.”

During this past summer, while preparing for his 33rd season, Fetkenhier said he still loved coaching and was unsure how much longer he would coach,

but it had always been about more than football.

“I keep trying to coach smarter and find ways to make my players better people first and better players second,” Fetkenhier said. “They will only be in high school for four years, but will be a leader in the community and a father for the rest of their lives and my goal is to always make them better people first.”

Reaction was shock via social media from former players and parents.

“Been blessed to have been coached and mentored by the best to ever do it!

Coach Fetkenhier will forever be family to me and I Thank God I was able to play for him,” said former quarterback Preston Guerra.

At the center of Park West are plans for a splash pad in the shape of an agave flower, which mimics the redesigned logo of the shopping center, set to be completed by the end of this year. Wood lattices outfitted with misters or vines will create shade and line the walkways throughout Park West. Two new 60-foot pylon signs will adorn either side of the Loop 101 freeway with markers showcasing Harkins Theatres and enough space for more tenant signs. Two new monument signs will sit right at the exits along Northern and 99th avenues. Construction is expected to be completed this spring.

Northern Community Park gains name while on schedule for opening The Hohokam were a creative people, and the cultural artifacts they left in their wake are creating issues for completion of Northern Community Park, now officially Paloma Community Park. City engineering staff, however, made it clear construction will continue as scheduled, with minor delays at the planned small lake and edges of one playground.

Although it may appear as a blip on the park screen, the city and its partners plan to handle the archaeological sites with care. Working with the State Historic Preservation Office, Bureau of Land Management, Army Corps of Engineers, and Flood Control District of Maricopa County, the city worked closely with all the agencies to “study and resolve any flood management, cultural, or biological impacts” of the proposed park, which will eventually

cover 457 acres north of West Wing Mountain open space.

The $2.6 million design contract for the park was approved in July 2016.

Hunter Contracting Co. was the successful bidder to provide design and preconstruction service for the park, and related offsite improvements at Lake Pleasant Parkway and Dixileta Drive.

Subsequent final design and construction for the first phase of the park was funded in FY 2017-2018 for approximately $30 million.

In his presentation to council Feb. 6, Architectural Services Manager Ed Stiffler pointed out that when the city selected the park site, it did not know it had the least cultural resources (Hohokam artifacts). In the final site plan, Stiffler said the city will take appropriate measures to address the wash in the park; near it, there may be soccer and baseball fields.

Sammamish (Wash.) Eastside Catholic defeats Centennial in GEICO Bowl

Centennial dominated defensively all season, but in the GEICO Bowl Series game against Sammamish (Wash.)

Eastside Catholic, its defense was tight again, but the offense struggled for the first time on the season.

Hosting Eastside Catholic Dec. 22 in the annual high school bowl game, Centennial’s offense was shut down by a pressure defense as the Coyotes dropped their first game of the season 17-0.

“Our defensive line played great all night against a really fast offense,” Eastside Catholic coach Jeremy Thielbar said. “Our defense is the heart of this team on defense and we played great tonight.”

Centennial’s offense (14-1) struggled early against a big, tough defense that held the Coyotes offense from moving the ball early, actually forcing the Coyotes to lose yards on the opening drive to force a punt.

Mid-way through the first quarter, Eastside Catholic (13-1) moved the ball down the field with short screen passes and short runs by quarterback

Michael Franklin, including a 14-yard pass on a third-and-five that kept the drive alive.

Franklin then countered on a 12yard run to set up a first and goal for the Crusaders, before running back Sam Adams took a pitch for a 5-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter with a 10-0 lead.

“Our execution surprised me a little bit. They weren’t zipping and zapping as much as I thought they were going to do up front. We were really concerned about their movement. They didn’t move as much as we thought

The Coyotes were held to one first down in the first half as the defense was forced to hold the Eastside Catholic offense in check, but the team trailed by 17 at halftime.

Senior Dylan Wampler had 17 tackles to lead the Coyotes defense, including three red-zone stops on the night, which had another strong showing but the offense could not get moving on the evening.

“There’s a reason he was chosen as the defensive player of the year and you saw that tonight,” Centennial head coach Richard Taylor said. “I usually don’t remember wins, but I remember everything about losses. Our defense played strong in the second half and that will be one positive thing I remember from tonight.”

Franklin did most of the passing work, finishing 9 of 17 for 138 yards.

Gee Scott Jr., hauled in four passes for 101 yards.

“We’re blessed we got another chance to prove ourselves against an

out-of-state team and we got the win,” Scott said.

The Coyotes gained some momentum by blocking a field goal early in the third quarter, but consecutive false-start penalties killed the drive.

A fake punt was sniffed out and the Crusaders milked the clock to end the quarter.

Jonathan Morris hooked up with Eric Haney on a 66-yard catch-andrun early in the fourth for Centennial’s biggest play of the game, but J.T Tuimoloau ruined the drive with a monstrous sack.

The Coyotes had one last chance to score with about four minutes to play but failed to convert on fourth-andtwo inside the red zone after Tuimoloau shut down yet another play.

“They were really sound in all three phases of the game,” Taylor said. “Some of their kids were a little quicker than I thought on defense.

It seemed we couldn’t match their quickness.”

before the Crusaders ran out the last three minutes of the game.

The matchup between state champions from different states was over by halftime as the Crusaders kept the Coyotes’ offense at a standstill.

Centennial (14-1), ranked No. 23 in the nation according to USA Today,

managed just one first down and 24 total yards in the first half as the Crusaders sucked the life out of the home crowd.

“We’ve had some big out-of-state games we lost, but for us to get this marquee victory is a great thing for our program,” Thielbahr said.

As another year comes to a close, local sports showed the end of junior college football in Arizona, a local high school athlete’s success and other major successes on and off the fields.

The Centennial Coyotes continued their football dominance with their fourth title in five years, Unified sports shined in West Valley high schools and a local girl made her debut in the UFC during the year.

As we close 2018 and look forward to 2019, here are the top 10 stories, as selected by the Peoria Times that showed sports success over the past 12 months.

1.Junior College football ends in Arizona After announcing in October 2017 that the Maricopa County Community College District would not cut football at the four

“A difficult decision has been reached regarding the MCCCD football program; we will eliminate football following the upcoming 2018 season as a MCCCD sponsored sport,” said Interim Glendale Community College President Terry Leyba Ruiz in an email obtained by the Peoria Times.

football erupted late last year, the Maricopa County Community College District Board of Governors announced in October it had decided against eliminating the sport.

The board then said the decision would “be reevaluated again in 2019, as the district continues to try and cut expenses at local colleges.”

“We want to make sure we are putting the resources that taxpayers entrust us with to good use across the entire system,” said Matt Hasson, MCCCD Director of Communication. “(Football players) are in and out of the schools and are not there for education and when you spend the money we spend, we want to focus on the collective community.”

Multiple sources confirm MCCCD would eliminate football after the 2018 season, as Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale and Glendale community colleges have said they will honor all scholarships through 2019, but this upcoming season will be the last that those schools have football programs.

“These recommendations, coupled with the elimination of financial investment from the state in community college education, forced very difficult conversations about our ability to serve the growing education needs of our community, especially those for whom access is already a challenge,” Ruiz’s email to staff said.

Later in the year, Pima, Eastern Arizona and Western Arizona all eliminated their programs as football at the junior college level ended at the conclusion of the season.

“We are tough,” Liberty head coach Chris Raymond said, as the team was celebrating after the final out. “This group is super tough, mentally and physically, and if you saw us work out, you would say, ‘Wow, they look more like a football team.’”

Verrado (27-5) opened the game scoring two in the first inning off Liberty starting pitcher Chandler Murphy by getting hits from the Vipers’ first four batters. Murphy struggled, but worked 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and allowing two runs and three hits in the victory.

“We all became a unit this season,” Murphy said. “This team really bonded together and were on a mission, and we completed our mission with this win.”

Liberty (23-8) took control of the game in the third inning, when Verrado starting pitcher Kyle Wellman argued calls to the umpire and, with a 3-0 count on the Lions’ Brady Welch, bounced a pitch that hit Welch in the leg.

“Our team is really embodied one through 24,” Raymond said. “We bring a brick from the dugout. We do a lot of weird little things.

I think the best thing that happened to us was when we started bringing a brick with our logo to the games. It became like our symbol. It was part of our dugout.”

The win gives the Lions, playing in their fourth state championship game in the last 10 years, a victory for the second time. The Lions won the 4A Division II title in 2010.

YEAR FROM 16 Phoenix Horizon Feb. 3 at the Ice Den in Scottsdale. It was Centennial’s second state title.

Centennial defeated Horizon in the state title game last season as well and head coach Greg Vaughn said the victory is great for his kids and the sport in Arizona.

“For our team, kids, school and sport, it is great, because we are getting more exposure,” Vaughn said. “Being a relatively newer sport, it is just great for the kids to get more schools to see the kids and what they can do on the ice.”

In the title game, Horizon scored the first nine minutes, when Joseph Lines slipped past two defenders and slid a shot just past Centennial goaltender Tyler Posivak. The Coyotes answered just over a minute later when Andrew Songstad took the puck down the side and fired a shot that sailed into the net to tie the game at one.

The Coyotes’ defense controlled the puck for the final six minutes of the game, keeping Horizon from getting a good scoring opportunity late. Posivak stopped 21 of the 24 shots in the game and stopped some huge chances in the third period.

“He was awesome and stepped up big tonight,” Vaughn said. “He had some ups and downs this season, but pulled out a big one today.”

Centennial opened the season winning its first three games, before falling to Mesquite Sept. 17. After that, the Coyotes won 13 of their final 15 games to reach the playoffs. In their opening playoff game, they defeated Scottsdale Desert Mountain 7-4 to advance to the title game for the second consecutive season.

4.Cactus softball falls in title game In the Cobras’ 2016 title game, a nonhome run call cost them, and in 2018, a safe call at first base led to two Tucson Salpointe Catholic runs that were the difference; Cactus (30-5) lost 2-0 in the 4A title game at Arizona State University Farrington Field May 15.

5.Kellis Unified Soccer plays in USA Special Olympic Games Raymond S. Kellis High School has been recognized for its Unified Sports programs, and now it sent yet another team to the USA Special Olympic Games.

This year, the Kellis Unified soccer team was selected to represent Arizona and will be flying to Seattle, Wash. in June.

The team participated in the area Special Olympic Games Dec. 6 at Peoria Pioneer Park and came home with the gold to earn the trip to Seattle.

Kellis Unified Soccer team athletes and their team partners could not be more ecstatic about the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as a team partner, Cassidy Gatrost, described it in her email notification to members of Peoria City Council, where she serves as a youth council liaison.

On a recent visit to the campus, athletes and partners were able to express their excitement and just talk about why they participate in the Unified program.

Partners are students enrolled in general education classes, who sign up for Unified sports. They are ambassadors and bring people together to teach life skills.

This is Allyson Herrera’s first year on the team. She plays defense.

Allyson said Unified “is a good program to get kids to be aware of other people’s abilities and disabilities, to make sure we all have the same opportunities.”

Alex Demeter said he chose to be with the team to meet everyone and “just have a good time, bond with everyone.”

Team coach Michael Wakeford and his assistant coach, Chris Ensslin, do the pairings for the athletes and partners. All of the partners agreed that it all works out in the end, even when it may not appear that way at the beginning of the year.

And now, as Allyson said, “We’re going places.”

And from now until June, the team is competing with other states to promote fitness. They wear Move bands, such as Fit Bits, to see who can train, get the most steps, burn the most calories.

Wakeford has been at Kellis 12 years, and his father was a Special Olympics coach as well.

“He was my role model since getting out of college,” Wakeford said.

He remembers the Kellis team’s first trip to USA Special Olympics. They traveled to Nebraska in 2010.

Kellis Unified soccer team is headed to the USA Special Olympics Games this summer.

He said, “This offers students a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to compete for their state, sleep in a hotel, be independent, develop social skills, and be able to work on those skills.”

6.Kellis Unified Golf duo wins bronze Kellis Unified Sports golf team members Sulivan Danielak-Kirberg and Patrick Fernandez represented the high school at the 2018 Special Olympics Austrian National Games and against some of the top competition in the world with great success.

“The boys did fantastic and were great ambassadors for the unified movement, our school community, as well as our state and country while competing in Austria (in June),” Kellis Unified Special Olympics coach Michael Wakeford said. “It was the experience of a lifetime and the boys played great.”

Kellis’ Special Olympics team manager Danielak-Kirberg and varsity golfer Fernandez, finished third in the top Gold Division to bring home the bronze medal after going up against hundreds of competitors.

7.Ironwood grad wins first two UFC bouts MacKenzie Dern had been the most sought after free agent in the world of combat sports for the past few years, but wasn’t sure she wanted any part of it before the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) came calling.

“I really didn’t want to get hit in the face,” Dern said, during a recent sit down interview at The MMA Lab. She is a multi-time world champion in Jiu-Jitsu, has been ranked No. 1 in the world by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation in 2017, having

won 12 world titles and 18 medals (9 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze) from 2014 to 2016.

Dern defeated Ashley Yoder March 2 in her long-awaited debut via split decision before earning her second UFC victory May 12 via a rear-naked choke in the first round over Amanda Cooper.

Members of the UFC knew they wanted Dern, but it was a chance encounter that got her to become an actual fighter.

“I was competing in a Jiu-Jitsu tournament, where a UFC expo was, and I took a picture with Shawn Shelby’s (UFC matchmaker) daughter, who was also competing,” Dern said. “He asked me if I had ever thought about MMA and I actually told him I had more to accomplish in the world of Jiu-Jitsu.”

Dern said she started training with The MMA Lab in Glendale to improve her Jiu-Jitsu and got a feel for the exciting sport.

Nearly a year later, the UFC came looking again and told her she should take some fights in lower-level leagues and see if she wanted to fight.

“I had never done any amateur fights before and they were there for me and allowed me to take a couple fights to try it out,” Dern said.

Dern said while a title fight may be sooner at a different weight class, 115 pounds is what she has always competed at.

“I know people have told me that if I go up to flyweight (125) or bantamweight (135), it would get me a title shot quicker,” Dern said. “But I want see

8.UFC debuts at Gila River Arena Arizona native Justin Gaethje won two high school state titles at Gila River Arena, and on April 14 he returned to the arena to fight in an Ultimate Fighting Championship main event in front of a packed house at the arena for the first time since 2007.

Gaethje, who entered the fight ranked No. 6 in the UFC lightweight division, pounded and battled No. 5-ranked Dustin Poirier in front of more than 12,000 standing fans inside the arena before losing by technical knockout in the fourth round.

Poirier and Gaethje were primed to have a battle for the ages and didn’t disappoint as the crowd was on its feet the entire fourround fight and long after it was over. The two fighters went out throwing punches back and forth with Poirier connecting on numerous jabs to open the fight.

Gaethje came out swinging widely, looking for a knockout punch early, but Poirier was able to avoid the hard punches. Gaethje connected on short jabs to Poirier’s face and body and both fighters took a lot of punishment in the first round.

Poirier dominated early, punishing Gaethje with numerous shots as he avoided early punishment. In the second round, Gaethje was able to get a barrage of punches to Poirier’s head and body, but Poirier was able to respond by forcing Gaethje back against the cage numerous times.

“This was two guys trying to finish each other, and I just hope the fans loved it,” Poirier said. “When (Gaethje) started to cover

Super Bowl 57 will be the fourth game played in Arizona and third in the past 15 years at University of Phoenix Stadium.

Glendale hosted Super Bowl 49 in 2015 and Super Bowl 42 in 2008. Super Bowl 30 (1996) was held at Sun Devil Stadium.

“We are very grateful that the NFL and its owners have once again selected Arizona to host the pre-eminent event in sports,” Rousseau said in a written statement. “It is a testament to the stellar reputation that our community has earned for staging world-class events, and there are none bigger than the Super Bowl. 10.Sunrise Mountain softball star returns to coach future Five years ago, Taylor Nowlin was leading the Sunrise Mountain softball team to its last state championship. Now, the prodigal daughter has returned to the other side of the bench, joining head coach Jody Pruitt’s staff as an assistant coach.

“She is one of the top former players we have had here and I am lucky to have her as part of my staff,” Pruitt said. “Her sister (Tori Nowlin) graduated last year and (Taylor) has always been supportive of her sister and our program. So, when I found out she wanted to be a physical education teacher, I told her she needed to be here and around our kids coaching because she is such an amazing person.”

After helping rebuild the Sunrise Mountain softball program on the field, Nowlin moved on to Grand Canyon University where she helped the program transition to

Division I status before ending her playing career in 2017.

She committed to GCU during the end of her junior year and started in the fall 2013, when the Antelopes were a Division II team. The Antelopes announced they would move to Division I soon after Nowlin arrived, but the team would not be eligible for postseason play until 2018, after Nowlin’s playing career would be over.

When she decided to become a PE teacher, Pruitt was quick to tell her she could join her staff and do her student teaching at her alma mater.

“I told her, when she is ready, she has a place on my staff,” Pruitt said. “I told her she needed to be around kids coaching and she is such an amazing person, I am honored to have her on my staff.”

Although she started college wanting to be a kindergarten teacher, she made the change quickly after working with young children at a summer camp.

“I started college and they said I had to choose a major, but I was 18 and working with kids at camp, so I wanted to be a kindergarten teacher,” Nowlin said. “But I just couldn’t do boogers, and I love kids, they are so funny. Then I remembered my time with (Pruitt) in her classes, so I decided to be a PE teacher.

“Plus, I get to wear (shorts and a T-shirt) to work every day; what else could you ask for? Besides, I am not sure I could sit at a desk all day, I just wanted to do something I love, and I love being back at Sunrise.”

Pruitt said Nowlin has already been a major asset and knows she can do anything she puts her mind to.

“Nothing about (Nowlin) surprises me because she is almost perfect in my eyes,” Pruitt said.

Teen Fortnite Nerf Wars at Peoria Main Library Love Fortnite? Love Nerf guns? The Peoria Main Library has the perfect night for you. Based on the videogame Fortnite, teens will have to rebuild their homeland and create a fort. Like the game, there will be loot drops and supply caches located in the library to help players create their forts. There will also be a Nerf War going on, so teens will have to build and protect their forts at the same time. Teens will have to use their problem-solving and teamwork skills in order to succeed.

They can also cosplay as their favorite Fortnite character. The best costume will receive a prize.

The library will supply darts, goggles, construction supplies, pizza and beverages. Teens will need to take their own Nerf gadget. A parent permission form is required and only the first 50 teens who register can play. Registration forms are available online or at the library. No teen will be allowed into the program unless they have registered early.

Driftwood Coffee: Mayor’s Restaurant of the Month

Mayor Cathy Carlat awarded Driftwood Coffee Co. as the Mayor’s Restaurant of the Month for December 2018.

With a shared vision to create a place of community in a local coffee shop, long-time friends Luke Bentley and Lance Linderman opened Driftwood Coffee Co. in February 2018. Their opening coincided with Axiom, which brought life to the historic building they now share in the heart of Old Town on 83rd Avenue, just south of Jefferson Street.

Driftwood’s interior is warm, inviting, and filled with the delightful aroma of locally and nationally-sourced roasted coffee. Its menu includes the café classics, alongside specialties like nitro cold brew and chai lattes. The food selection is local and ever evolving, including

breakfast burritos made daily by an Old Town Peoria resident turned chef.

Adorning one of Driftwood’s largest walls is a mural custom created by Peoria resident Timmy Ham. As an award-winning artist, Ham is the creator of SLOTH - a lifestyle brand that seeks to spread positive vibes.

Bentley and Linderman said they are always looking to elevate those around them and enjoy promoting other local artists and creators by giving them a chance to highlight and sell their creations and merchandise. Driftwood also hosts a variety of community events that incorporate friendship, music, poetry, art, the spoken word and coffee.

And now for the happy new year I hope you’ve had a Merry Christmas, and now for the happy new year. New years are resets, turning the page. That was the year that was, it’s over, let it go. This is much easier said than done. But there is power in starting fresh with a new perspective and a new beginning.

Here’s a post I read on Facebook. Consider it carefully and prayerfully.

“I’m walking into 2019 with a clear heart and mind. If you owe me, don’t worry about it – you’re welcome. If you’ve wronged me, it’s all good – lesson learned. If you’re angry with me, you won – I’ve let it go. If we aren’t speaking – it’s cool – I wish you well. If I’ve wronged you, I apologize – it wasn’t intentional. I’m grateful for every experience that I received.

Life is too short for pent-up anger, holding of grudges and all the

extra stress or pain that comes with holding on to what is holding me back and you back. Remember, forgiving someone is for you, not the other person. Don’t block your blessing. Make 2019 a year of positivity by forgiveness and getting things right where you can.”

You might be thinking, “Who is this person? Who could do all this stuff? This isn’t real. People don’t do this.”

Believe it or not, there are people who have done one, two or even all the New Year’s proposals presented. You don’t find this very often. It’s upside down. It’s counter cultural. It’s the high road. It’s the opposite of getting even. It’s opposite of playing the victim. It’s mercy triumphing over judgment.

It’s “The Beatitudes” in the Bible expressed by a real person in what has happened in their life to and from others.

What the writer has declared is best for the other party and for himself or herself. It frees the victim and the perpetrator from tar babies of the past and unleashes them and us to a future bigger, better and greater.

Sometimes God will put a Goliath in your life, for you to discover, uncover and recover the David within you. What I see here is the David within this person. A mistake that makes you humble is better than an achievement that makes you arrogant.

Think of what Jesus outrageously proclaims in the Beati-

tudes in Matthew, Chapter Five in the Scriptures. “Here’s another old saying that deserves a second look: ‘Eye for eye, tooth for tooth.’

Is that going to get us anywhere?

Here’s what I propose: ‘Don’t hit back at all.’ If someone strikes you, stand there and take it. If someone drags you into court and sues for the shirt off your back, gift wrap your best coat and make a present of it. And if someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously.

You’re familiar with the old written law, “Love your friend,” and its unwritten companion, “Hate your enemy.” I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. see

The New Year — 2019

It is so sad when you have a young person in front of you who has let his or her newfound freedom mess up their lives. I had a young lady in front of me that had been a straight A student and was a freshman at Arizona State University.

Because of drugs and alcohol, she had been arrested for a D.U.I. and thrown out of school.

I fined her $2,500, 10 days in jail and suspended her driving privileges. Her mother said they would no longer pay for the girl’s education. Getting a job now will be difficult with no driver’s license, and no education. So sad.

As we approach the New Year of 2019, it is time to make our New Year’s

resolutions. I have listed 10 News Year’s resolutions I am sure will help keep you out of court. They might even save your family, your health or maybe your life.

I know they will make life a lot more enjoyable and meaningful. You might notice they bear a strong resemblance to the Ten Commandments.

1. Don’t take or sell drugs. They are addictive and before long it controls you. Drugs become your God. 2. Don’t let drugs, money or possessions become so important in your life that you will cheat and steal to get them.

3. Don’t curse and use four-letter words. It leads to fights and all sorts of bad problems.

4. Take the first day of each week to reflect on what you are doing with your life. People who have no goals or purposes in their life usually have problems.

5. Young people, listen to your parents and do what they say. That would go a long way in keeping you out of trouble.

6. Respect life. Don’t kill each other.

People should not shoot, knife, or beat each other up. Keep your temper under control.

7. Men, don’t play around with another man’s wife. That causes a lot of domestic violence and assault cases.

Divorces are expensive.

8. Don’t take something that does not belong to you.

9. Don’t lie, tell the truth.

10. If it belongs to someone else, leave it alone. Wanting what belongs to someone else causes you a lot of problems.

Lesson : 2,000 years ago, laws very similar to the above were given to the people of Israel and it is still good advice today.

regardless; the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that.

What I’m saying is, grow up.

You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and

graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.

How can you have a better New Year this year? The answer might be right in the “crazy” person’s proclamation. Pick a sentence in the proclamation you know you should do and do it. You will need to tap into God’s power to do this.

That will turn your “should” into a “can.” Set yourself free from who

you are upset with or what you are upset with. Grow up and go on.

Build a bridge and get over it.

When Feb. 1 rolls around, Poe will chalk up seven years at Quintero, which originally opened as a private course in 2000. It became public in November 2011, just a couple months before Poe came on board.

Why go public?

Poe said, “The new owners felt that was the model to make sure the golf course was sustainable because of the income.”

Since it became public, the rounds increased year over year, Poe said.

“We knew we had a great property, Poe said. “We didn’t know how it was going to be received. At the end of the day and we saw the (response), not so bad, not that far away from the Valley.

“We’ve just improved the quality of golf and delivering that experience day in and day out.”

So, how does Quintero offer an economic boost to the region?

It could be because of the 34,000 rounds a year reported by Quintero, and according to Poe, “steadily increasing on that.”

“We’re trying to actually slow down the amount of rounds and increase the revenue,” Poe said.

In September, he said, rounds were up 23 percent over the last year; November showed an increase of 16 percent over the previous month and 14 percent over the prior year.

“We’re constantly increasing,” Poe said. “The more golfers over time affects the course.”

Course superintendent Trevor Cooke has been at Quintero eight years.

Poe called Cooke “a workaholic, keeps it immaculate year-round, makes sure the golf course is in good condition. We believe in keeping our golf course in pristine condition year in and year out.”

Golf carts are another subject, and Quintero uses lithium batteries to “reduce the environmental footprint,” Poe said.

“So, carts are lighter,” he said. “A GPS tracker allows us to interact with

We want to make sure we know what other people are doing, but it’s not our primary focus.”

In the one day checked by this reporter, Jan. 20, the least expensive time was 1:17 p.m. and the fee was $96 for a single player up to $108 for four players.

Yet, some members play four or five times a week, Poe said, along with the same number of rounds for visiting Canadians. Quintero is a par-72 course, and Poe said it normally takes four and one-half hours to play a round.
