PUSD adopts school safety resolution

The Peoria Unified School District Governing Board passed a resolution at its Dec. 12 regular meeting regarding mental health and school safety.

PUSD Superintendent Linda Palles Thompson said, “Safety is paramount and is one of our main areas of focus in our district’s Strategic Plan. We want to be sure that we are doing all we can to prevent a situation from ever happening, and to be well-prepared on how to

After winning their fourth state title in the past five season, the Centennial Coyotes are now aimed to battle in the GEICO State Championship Bowl at 8:30 p.m. Dec. 22 at Centennial High School, 14388 N. 79th Ave., Peoria..

“This was the first school board resolution passed statewide that was proposed and/or influenced by March For Our Lives Arizona organizers, so thank you for sharing in that journey and accomplishment with us! Many students in our organization have read the Peoria resolution since it has been passed at the meeting, and we all agree that it is very well written. Do we have the permission of you and the Peoria Unified School Board to use some of that same language in the resolutions we are continuing to pass? I am not familiar with the procedure for something like this, so I wanted to ask you directly.

Ceja-Martinez issued the following statement about the school safety resolution:

“Student safety and well being is at the core of the Peoria Unified Strategic Plan. Every pillar of the Strategic Plan is rooted in student safety and well-being. Mental health plays a critical role in student safety and well-being, as does every type of health.

“The Student Safety and Well Being Resolution is just one of the many ways the governing board and the district staff have publicly demonstrated our commitment to our students and our community.

“For me, the resolution declares, I know the problem and I am committed to addressing it. This is not a new commitment for me. I have been advocating for adequate resources for all students.

“This became very clear to me in 2013, my last year as a teacher in PUSD. That year the state Legislature made deep cuts to education, specifically to public school districts. Our governing board chose to reduce support staff and student services. This was devastating to the most vulnerable students who were most often the students with the greatest needs.

We know that in order to support the whole child, we need everyone on board and we want all hands on deck. We are offering support to the whole community in whatever ways we are able; in the same way that parents, families and community members have supported us through a tough decade.

“The resolution was approved because student safety and well-being is a priority to all governing board members.

We may have differences of opinion on how to keep our communities safe and well, but the differences of opinion have led to robust debates, development of strategies we had not considered before and a deeper commitment to our shared goals.

School Safety

• Safety is the number one priority in the Peoria Unified School District.

School Resource Officers

The Peoria Unified School District has long-standing relationships with the city of Glendale and city of Peoria police departments to ensure the safety procedures we have in place are met with their approval and expertise. We are also proud to partner with both of these police departments to provide School Resource Officers on all seven high school campuses. These SROs establish relationships at their respective feeder elementary schools and both Glendale and Peoria police departments will increase patrol in the immediate area at a school site, should they require it.

School emergencies

Emergency Operations Plan Peoria Unified has a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan that addresses school crisis situations.

Peoria Unified administrators have been trained and drill on each type of emergency situation – with and without students present. The district has a strong

relationship with all local municipalities to ensure our Emergency Operations Plan is up-to-date and thorough. The plan is updated annually to allow the best outcome in the event of a crisis, with guidance and oversight by the police departments that serve our district.

Each school site will conduct the following practice with students and staff: o Monthly evacuation (fire) drills o Two lockdown drills per school year o Two shelter-in-place drills per school year o Two bus evacuation drills per year At the discretion of the site supervisor, drills may or may not be communicated to parents in advance.

To maintain the district’s laser focus on student and staff safety, specific details within the Emergency Operations Plan are not shared with the public.

Shelter-in-Place The shelter-in-place protocol provides safe refuge for students, staff and visitors at the school. This might include a situation taking place in the community, near the proximity of the school or a biohazard situation. During a shelterin-place, students and staff will remain indoors with the doors locked, as directed by either law enforcement or the school principal, although the educational learning environment may proceed as usual.

A Shelter-in-Place may be used for the following incidents: o Bee swarm, assault/fight on campus, police activity in the community, social media threat, etc.

Lockdown Lockdowns may be issued in situations involving dangerous intruders or other incidents that may pose a threat to a student or staff’s immediate safety.

During a lockdown, all interior and exterior doors will be locked. Parents and visitors will not be allowed on campus during a lockdown.

A Lockdown may be used in the following incidents: o Intruder, violent parent or guest, weapon on campus, social media threat, bomb threat, etc.

Letter to the editor There should never have been a lockout In reference to Steve Poe’s letter in the Nov. 30 issue of the Peoria Times, I concur wholeheartedly and completely with his opinion. I was part of the steering committee that formed the Peoria Arizona Historical Society (PAHS) in 1990 and continued volunteering until 2005 when I moved to Prescott. I was instrumental in acquiring the historical marker located in front of the Central School Museum on 83rd Avenue.

I served in many capacities in the 15 years that I was an active member. I was always on the board and was vice presi-

Evacuation and relocation The district’s evacuation protocol includes everything from evacuating from a room to another room – evacuating from one building to another – evacuating from a building to the school grounds – or evacuating off-site to an alternate location.

An evacuation may be used in the following incidents: o Fire, bomb threat, fire, gas leak, power outage, suspicious package, etc.

In the event of an off-site evacuation, the district will implement its Reunification Plan and families will receive communication from the school district, advising them of the location and area in which they can pick up their child.

Please note that proper identification will be required to further ensure a child’s safety.

The Emergency Operations Plan includes specific guidelines for relocating students with disabilities and non-English speaking students.

Communication during a school emergency Parents will be notified during a school crisis or shortly thereafter, depending on how long the event lasts. It is critically important that parents follow the district’s protocol in the event of an

dent at one time. I wrote articles about artifacts in the museum, researched and wrote an historical article every month for the museum newsletter and other publications.

I worked as a docent and helped plan events. Using cassette tapes, I conducted numerous interviews with individual people; old timers and others, concerning Peoria’s history.

The current debacle that has caused a lockout of the museum to the public and the historical society membership has come to a redoubtable impasse. I have to ask: Are the cassette tapes, such an important part of Peoria’s history, being kept at the recommended temperature of 60 to 74 degrees so they will not de-

teriorate? Has anyone transcribed them to hard copy?

Yes, I am appalled that our labors of love to preserve Peoria’s great history are being cast so blithely aside while the arguments continue. Artifacts have disappeared, and, I fear, the history may also be disappearing.

Moving to Prescott in 2005 does not alter my feelings for Peoria and its historical society and museum. There should never have been a lockout, and the current “new” committee should disband if the election was not kept to proper procedures, giving the membership no vote. You can always check social media but remember that official district communication will always be shared directly on our website.

Please note that during a school crisis, the school may not answer the phone. The staff’s number one priority is to ensure everyone’s safety on campus. The district’s Communications and Public Relations Department will share information with families once it has been verified.

Depending on the type of crisis situation, students may be asked to text their parents and let them know that they are safe. In some crisis situations, students will not be allowed to use their phones.

Fifteen trees lined up in two rows had people oohing and ahhing and then droppng their voting tickets in large orange buckets.

When the event ended around 8:30 p.m. Dec. 14 in the parking lot of Arrowhead Harley-Davidson, Moon Saloon won the top prize.

The tree was packed with stuffed animals and toys, all of which were delivered to a needy family — along with the tree — the following day by College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving.

Standing two trees away was the Modern Round tree studded with lollipops and ice cream cones and lots of candy treats.

Chick-fil-A of Peoria was decorated with “Eat Mor Chikin” cows.

Peoria North Rotary Club sold hot chocolate and Centennial High School’s Bel Canto Choir sang Christmas carols

to entertain visitors.

Yes, it was cold outside, but everyone was dressed for the chill.

Peoria Councilmember Jon Edwards made an appearance. So did Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Kettle korn and hot beverages were available.

Peoria Chamber of Commerce President Guy Erickson was pleased, even with the loud generator that supplied the energy for the tree lights.

“Forty-one children are getting toys,” he grinned.

But, he vowed next year, the chamber would be procuiring a quieter generator.

Local blood donor may hold gift of life

Kshama Chandan gave blood for the first time Dec. 18 at the Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services) location on 59th Avenue and Union Hills Drive in Glendale.

Although there’s a first time for every blood donor, in Chandan’s case, her blood could mean the difference between life and death for 2-year-old Zainab in Florida.

The mother of a baby daughter who turns 1 year old Dec. 22, Chandan is especially hopeful her own blood could possibly help Zainab win her battle against an aggressive form of cancer.

Zainab’s blood is missing a common antigen — called “Indian B” (Inb) — the majority of people have in their red blood cells. A matching donor would need to be missing their Inb antigen and have blood type O or A. According to Vitalant, statistically

the only people who are likely to be a match are exlusively of Iranian, Indian or Pakistani descent. Even among those

groups, only 4 percent are missing the Inb antigen. Zainab’s parents are not compatible. She will need at least seven donors because she will require ongoing blood transfusions for an undetermined amount of time.

Vitalant spokesperson Sue Thew said Tuesday a worldwide search found three people who could match Zainab’s blood. She needs seven.

Chandan, who is 100 percent descent

from India, has a 4-percent chance of being a match. Still, she has rare blood herself. It was discovered when she gave birth to her daughter a year ago.

She has Bombay blood, an extremely rare red cell phenotype. Only about one in four million people have the Bombay phentoype, which is missing the H antigen. If Chandan ever needs a lifesaving transfusion, that is what she would need.

Thew said the rare blood inventory in Vitalant’s Scottsdale lab contains just 300 units. If Chandan’s blood is not compatible with Zainab’s, it would be added to the inventory and used to help others.

That was comforting to Chandan, who said, “I just hope when they test it, it’s compatible.”

When asked what she would say to Zainab if she could look into her eyes, Chandan said she would tell the youngster, “Enjoy your life. Don’t think about what’s going on.”

Chandan said since she learned about Zainab’s rare blood, she has felt a connection. That was just about 10 days before she made the call to Vitalant to set an appointment to donate and have her blood tested. see

She learned about Zainab through a friend, who had seen the flier on Vitalant’s website. Although she did not like the thought of needles, Chandan said she went through the procedure because she felt that connection to Zainab.

Her own daughter, Meera, is fortunate to have the same blood type as her father, Akshay Ravindran, B positive. He donates platelets on a regular basis.

Chandan realizes it will be disappointing if she is unable to donate blood to Zainab.

“I’m hoping if it doesn’t match, hopefully, it will help someone with my type of blood, maybe save their life,” she said.

Testing won’t take long. In the meantime, Chandan and Ravindran will be having a birthday party this weekend to celebrate Meera’s first birthday. The couple has been in the Valley four years and Chandan said they have invited quite a few people to celebrate the occasion.

It could be a life-saving celebration as well.

28 Arizona hospitals host blood drives Hospitals across Arizona are looking for blood donors to help ensure their patients have an ample supply this holiday season. State troopers bring ‘beary’ happy holiday

Two Arizona Troopers had a different assignment Dec. 12 as representatives of the Arizona State Troopers Association handed out more than 100 teddy bears at Abrazo Arrowhead Hospital and Banner Thunderbird Medical Center.

“This came from a local lieutenant over 23 years ago who really thought this was a good idea,” DPS representative Donna Spychalski said. “There are multiple coordinators around the state, but we will be handing them out here at Abrazo and later at Banner Thunderbird.”

The troopers went room to room handing out small teddy bears dressed with DPS trooper shirts to parents.

“It is a good feeling just to see the smile on the parents’ faces and know we are warming their days just a little,” Williams said. “To know we are able to give the parents a little something is a heartwarming feeling and I enjoy doing this.”

The teddy bears are given to new mothers for their infants and delivered to them at Abrazo Arrowhead Campus during the annual tradition.

“It is just an amazing feeling to see the parents get the bears from our trooper every year and it makes me feel pretty good to be part of this every year I have been involved for over a decade,” Spychalski said.

Arizona Troopers started the Christmas Bear program more than 23 years ago, providing stuffed teddy bears to both children and adults at their bedside.

The program has handed out 2,150 bears every year and has done this at hospitals throughout the state each year.

The Christmas Bear Program, sponsored by the Arizona Trooper Association, is in its 23rd year and the program continues to exemplify the outstanding dedication of the Department of Public

West Valley man finds siblings on genetic test site

It has been a tumultuous year for Marty Gasiorowski. He and his wife, Tammy, have traveled through the Internet and across the country, seeking answers about his biological parents.

The couple had originally started their search in 2006, before 23andMe was available, in Utica, N.Y., near Binghamton, where Marty grew up.

He said he got a “little information,” but not enough to make calls or further inquiries.

But earlier this year, Marty decided to go on 23andMe, a genetic testing site. It was mainly to obtain medical history in case Marty and Tammy, or their son, Martin James Gasiorowski II, could use it in any future medical issues. What they discovered, however, was more than they could ever had hoped for.

Marty was adopted as a 7-week-old infant in Utica, N.Y., and he said he

“never knew much of anything about my birth parents.”

“The parents that adopted me were great,” he said, “and I don’t remember a time where I didn’t know that I was adopted. However, there was always something missing. I never understood why people would want to join the family business, or why siblings would be excited to play on the same sports team or in the same band.”

After high school in Binghamton, N.Y., Marty attended Syracuse University on an Air Force ROTC scholarship, then was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., where he met his wife and where their son was born. After leaving the Air Force, the family moved to Arizona, where they have remained.

Marty’s interest in finding his biological family was prompted by a book he read earlier this year: “A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived”

learn about one’s ancestry and medical history using internet sites such as 23andMe. “It piqued my interest,” Marty said, “especially for the medical history that I never knew. I didn’t really expect it to find any of my birth family.”

What a surprise awaited him when he read the report from 23andMe. “I was amazed that it said, ‘This person is probably your cousin.’ I contacted him through the 23andMe app in April 2018, and learned that he is actually my nephew, Doug. He lives in Virginia, but he and his family had a vacation planned for May (the very next month after we connected) that included Arizona. Tammy and I drove

to Lake Powell and met Doug and his family there. So, they were the first from our new family that we met. It was so exciting. Doug looks a lot like our son.”

There was more to come. Doug connected Marty with half-sister Billie, who lives in Louisiana, as does her daughter, Kara, Doug’s sister. Marty told Billie and her family about living in Fort Walton Beach for a time, they said they were going on vacation to Fort Walton Beach in June. So, Marty and Tammy decided they would meet there, and they had a get-together with them and Tammy’s side of the family that lives there. see

“We learned that Billie had also grown up in Binghamton and was also adopted by her step-father, although raised by her birth mother,” Marty said.

Billie was a Realtor in years past, and she told him she had listings on the road where his parents lived at one time.

More research followed. Marty and Billie learned they were two of at least eight siblings (one has died), ranging in age from 39 to 78.

“And I now have 16 new nieces and nephews,” Marty said. “I had to put together a spreadsheet to keep track of everyone.”

They learned their father, Clyde Phipps, died in 1996. But he was apparently an excellent jazz keyboard player who played with Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie and others.

“He definitely got around, as he was married four times, and fathered the eight children with six different women,” Marty said. “He was originally from Binghamton, and my two eldest siblings, Dean and Judy, grew up there.

“I connected with my half-sister, Natha, on social media in July 2018 and learned she was visiting in Arizona at that time, so Tammy, Martin and I took a quick trip the next day to meet her. A month later, in August, I had a business trip to North Carolina, where I met another half-sister, Judy. My nephew, Doug, drove down from Virginia to meet us for dinner as well. In September, we took a trip to Alaska (where my father lived the last part of his life) to meet my two half-brothers, Dean and George, as well as several nieces and a nephew.

“The timing was perfect, as Natha was there, as well as Dean’s daughter, Sarah. We also had the pleasure of meeting Natha’s daughters, Meghan and Christa, and Dean’s son, Mitchell, who all live in Alaska.”

Marty has one more half-sister, Debbie, in Louisiana, who he has not met.

“I hope to meet her early in 2019,” Marty said. “We are also planning a big

family reunion in 2019, where, hopefully, everyone can get together in the same place.”

But there’s more.

“All of this so far is on my father’s side of the family. I hadn’t learned anything about my mother’s side of the family, so I submitted my DNA sample to ancestry.com,” Marty said.

A potential close relative in Vermont was cited in the report Marty received.

He contacted the person and learned he was Uncle Pat, Marty’s mother’s younger brother, and he had three children. Unfortunately, he also learned his birth mother, Marianne, died at the age of 30, when Marty was 9 years old. see

and getting to know this big ‘new’ family and recognizing similar family traits. I definitely feel more complete and feel a great connection to my newly found family.”

Marty knows of other people who have gone on 23andMe, who have had different experiences; some not so pleasant. Marty said one of the people he worked with found out his biological father was his parents’ next door neighbor. He said other adopted friends have told him they don’t want to know their biological parents.

But, as Marty said, in the words of a country song, “Life Changes,” and he and Tammy have adopted those words as their motto.

They have their Glendale home up for sale now, and they’re moving back to the Fort Walton area to be close to Tammy’s family. Their son is attending a graduate school in Kent, England, and strangely enough, Marty and Tammy have no family in Arizona.

But, the way things are going, that could change in the future.

The dangers of multiple medications in older drivers It’s not just alcohol and illegal drugs that can impair driving – so can legally prescribed medications, taken alone or in combination with each other.

Almost half of adults 65 and older report using seven or more medications while remaining active drivers, according to new research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Nearly 20 percent of older drivers are using medications that have very limited therapeutic benefit, pose excess harm, or both. Drugs such as these are called potentially inappropriate medications,

Do not pass a stopped school bus Last week I was driving on 85th Avenue, just north of Peoria Avenue. There was a school bus stopped in the roadway in front of an apartment complex to let some children off.

The school bus had its red stop signs on the side of the bus extended and had red flashing lights. Additionally, the driver was helping a special needs child on the sidewalk. I was quite surprised (and disappointed) when the vehicle in front of me kept driving and did not make any effort at all to stop for the school bus as he should have.

I thought maybe the driver was from another state and not familiar with the Arizona law for school buses. So, I thought I would share with everyone what the law requires everyone to do when you approach a school bus that is stopped and has its stop signs extended.

The law (ARS 28–857) specifically states that drivers will come to a complete stop and wait until the stop signs are closed. I know that sometimes, it may feel like the bus is stopped for a very long time. But I can assure you the driver is doing everything that she or he can do to get you on your way, but their priority is the safety of the children. I am sure if it was your children on the

bus, you would want everyone to stop and wait a minute or two for their safety.

A few days after seeing this, I read in the newspaper about new penalties in Prince Edward Island, Canada for not stopping properly for a school bus. The new penalty was put into place due to numerous complaints of vehicles nearly hitting school children that were getting on or off the bus. The new fine in Canada includes 12 demerits, a suspension of your driver’s license for three months, and a fine of approximately $3,500 (US dollars). Keep in mind, all traffic fines can be completely avoided by simply obeying the traffic laws.

Discuss alternatives: There are often ways to reduce risks through alternative medications, or changing the doses or the timing of the doses. Don’t be afraid to question health care providers. It’s their job to help you. And it may help save your life.

Contemporary quilts featured in new exibit at West Valley Art Museum

A Fiber Art Retrospective showcasing creative, colorful contemporary artistic quilts is currently on view in the West Valley Art Museum Gallery on the first floor of Peoria City Hall, 8401 W. Monroe St. in Peoria. The exhibit is described as “a holiday treat for your eyes as you marvel at the designs and varied patterns of this type of intricate art.”

Also on view are hand needle felted fiber art pieces by Anna Marie Peterson, who, in her 102nd year, continues to explore the world of exotic birds and animals, expressing each in her own colorful handiwork.

There will be an artists’ reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 27, giving everyone an opportunity to learn more about the contemporary quilt art genre.

Arts & Entertainment YouthWorks brings comedic flair to ‘Robin Hood’ TheaterWorks continues its 2018-19 season with the YouthWorks production “Robin Hood and His Merry Men,” opening Jan. 11 on the Gyder Stage of the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts. While King Richard is away fighting a war, the kingdom of Nottingham is left in the hands of tyrannical Prince John, a greedy, villainous boy, who demands outrageously high taxes from his townspeople. Their only hope is Robin Hood of Locksley and his band of merry men, known for stealing from the rich and giving to the poor.

However, the YouthWorks version of the story is told with a twist. Presented as a play within a play, hilarity ensues as

a high school theater struggles to put up the play for opening night. Everything that could go wrong, does. Cues are missed, lines are dropped and Robin Hood’s merry men are not who you think they are.

Porchlight Family Media launches ‘Greenhorn Tales’ Porchlight Family Media, the network which produces the audio drama industry podcast, “Audio Theatre Central,” has launched its first audio drama series.

The pilot episode for the new audio sitcom, “Greenhorn Tales,” was released on Dec. 9.

About the premise of this comedy series: “Greenhorn Tales” is an audio drama about two young guys, Cam and Nick, living in the small community of Bristol. They share an apartment and are desperately trying to be adults, but are not quite succeeding.

They are complete greenhorns at adult life. The pilot episode titled, “Moving, Motorcycles and Marching Bands,” which was written by Christopher Green,

producer of “Shadows and Daylight,” gives an introduction to the series regulars and sets up the rest of the show with the back story of the two lead characters’ move from their parents’ homes. The episode features a cameo from the ubertalented Duane Riffenburgh, writer and actor for several seasons of “Jonathan Par” and one of the producers of the “Creation Adventure Family” series of programs.

As football ends at the JC level, are other sports on the chopping block?

Little did people know that after Maricopa County Community College District announced in February it would be eliminating football at four schools, exactly how many dominoes would fall or that they were killing the sport in Arizona.

That noise you hear are the final football dominoes falling after Arizona Western and Eastern Arizona both recently announced their football programs have also now ended. Pima announced in the summer they would end their football program this season to end all junior college football opportunities in Arizona.

“Sports is a ‘carrot’ for our youth and I don’t know about everyone else, but I wasn’t thinking long-term as an 18- to 19year-old and needed that carrot,” Glendale Community College defensive line coach Kelley Epley said after the Gauchos’ final

Epley said. “Yet, I would be considered a ‘drop-out’ according to the one-year study the ‘Committee-Group’ did that the MCCCD Board keeps referencing for ending football.”

Citing financial concerns, the Maricopa County Community College District will eliminate its football programs following the 2018 season.

Phoenix College, Scottsdale Community College, Mesa Community College and Glendale Community College will all discontinue their football programs following the fall 2018 season with Pima announcing a few months later they would end their programs.

“Ongoing financial constraints, including leveling off of enrollment growth at a majority of the colleges, as well as the zeroing out of state support for MCCCD, has led to the need for the district to look at the prioritization of resources to ensure we continue to meet the changing educational needs of the community,” MCCCD said in a statement in February.

MCCCD says its four football programs comprise 20 percent of the district’s total athletic budget and more than 50 percent of related insurance costs. The district said no other sports will be impacted.

One of the biggest concerns from the district was about insurance costs for the district, which they say football has resulted in the largest number of claims due to the types of injuries that players sustain.

District provides insurance for all of its nearly 200,000 students with a premium of about $900,000 a year. There were about 400 junior college football players in Maricopa County during the 2018 season – approximately 2 percent of the entire student body, but officials with MCCCD claim that football accounted for what the district says is about 30 percent of the annual insurance costs.

But former GCC head football coach Joe Kersting said the district forgot one important aspect that has not been announced.

“No one has responded to why football

is not affordable in Maricopa County,” Kersting recently tweeted. “Football players pay over $1.7 million per year in tuition alone, while four football programs cost less than $1 million (including scholarships and insurance).”

District officials said the state’s decision to eliminate funding to the community colleges several years ago played a role in the decision. They also looked at national trends, pointing to 530 member colleges in the National Junior College Athletic Association; only 65 offer football.

One issue that many have questions about has been MCCCD officials saying football makes up 20 percent of the district’s total athletic budget and is responsible for more than 50 percent of insurance costs. They also say that ongoing costs to maintain the football programs could top $20 million, including needed capital improvements and associated expenses.

“The entire report is a sham because kids don’t get full rides. A couple do because of fundraising efforts programs earn themselves, but the school might cover 80 fee waivers a semester during any given year. It costs $1,300 a semester and fee waivers are only $325,” Epley said. “The rest, including the very few full rides granted, are covered by the student, financial aid or the fundraising funds each program collects themselves. Colleges aren’t losing money, they are making money if you add in the tuition and how could tuition not be included? That is just an insult to the public. The entire report was an insult to common sense.”

He added that stats from the original report to end football were skewered in favor of ending the sport.

As the season ends, players have been scrambling to get college offers but most may be left out.

“Some will still go to college, but even those kids won’t see the process all the way through. At least with junior college football, they would have had to get through almost half their college requirements and even if they don’t play anywhere else after,” Epley said. “With junior college football, most would have been halfway to a degree, so it’s a lot easier to finish something when you’re already halfway through it and that’s what happened to me in my collegiate career.”

But, according to former GCC football coach Joe Kersting, the district forgot to mention that other entities use the stadiums and many wondered why football should be held responsible for capital improvement costs.

“There are many other entities that use the stadiums. Why should the

capital expense for repairing stadiums be only the responsibility of football?”

Kersting questioned.

Numerous calls to MCCCD officials were not returned, which made me wonder, what are they hiding?

Having talked to numerous highranking officials at MCCCD, they have said they believe the district is going to eliminate all sports in the not too distant future.

So it looks like MCCCD is putting more dominoes up to knock down as numerous people have said that come March 2019, an announcement is expected that MCCCD is going to eliminate ALL sports at the community college level in the district.

When asked what the end of junior college football in Arizona means, Epley summed it up.

“The opportunities for our state’s high school football players to extend their athletic careers, develop intellectually, physically and maturity-wise and experience even higher aspirations both academically and athletically,” Epley said. “I can say playing at Glendale Community College back in 1981-82

absolutely changed my life for the better and can attribute my quality of life personally and professionally to my playing and coaching days at GCC.” Having covered the MCCCD conflicting reports since the announcement in February, I have been expecting the ultimate announcement that sports will end at the junior college level, and it may be closer than even I expect.

“All they have said in the past nine months is that the other sports are safe,” Epley said. “I am hearing from sources on multiple campuses that an email will go out next February or March saying that all sports in the MCCCD district are being eliminated. Why wouldn’t they lie about this after they have been lying all along anyway? They originally said that the elimination football would be revisited after the 2018 season and then they eliminated it two months later.”

Having been accused myself by MCCCD Communications director Matt Hasson, who claimed that I misquoted him in a previous article and that I had actually quoted someone else, mistakenly attributed the quote to Hasson. When proof came out that I was

correct on television, and I actually still have the recording of the quote, I have yet to receive an apology from anyone at MCCCD, which I was never seeking.

“How does Hasson still have his job as the Director of Media Relations for the MCCCD after last year disparaging football players,” Epley said. “He vehemently denied this and stated ‘I would never say something like that,’ then a video shown on the television that shows him saying exactly what you quoted him saying. He is either a liar (my pick) or not qualified to hold the position he currently holds. Bottom line is how can a Director of Media Relations for the largest Community College District in America do his job if he can’t remember what he says to the Media?”

How far will the lies continue to all athletes at the community college level?

What can they d to stop the madness?

Maybe its time for someone to take a stand and tell the board, enough is enough because having seen the way they have twisted everything, it is finally time for an independent entity to get to the truth.

Hotshots prepare for launch of Alliance of American Football League

As a new spring football league prepares for launch, the Arizona team in the Alliance of American Football League (AAF) — known as the Arizona Hotshots — held its inaugural media day Dec. 17 at the new Arizona Christian University campus in Glendale.

“We are very excited and it is kind of a homecoming for me,” Hotshots head coach and former Tempe McClintock graduate Rick Neuheiselm said. “I grew up here and my mom and dad have already promised 4,000 tickets to friends and family members.”

The AAF, announced in March 2018, is the brainchild of filmmaker Charlie Ebersol. The AAF will be overseen by former National Football League general manager Bill Polian.

Former NFL players Troy Polamalu, Hines Ward, Justin Tuck, and Mike Singletary are part of the league.

The league consists of eight teams in Phoenix, Atlanta, Birmingham (Ala.), Memphis, Orlando, Salt Lake City, San Antonio and San Diego.

Ebersol added that, most importantly, all teams will be league-owned, meaning there will be no billionaire owners trying to control everything.

While players will have set salaries, they can make more based on fan engagement (and fan betting) and are free to leave at any time if they receive NFL opportunities.

“We built our model based on a fiveto seven-year plan,” Ebersol said. “The leagues that failed previously were banking on massive fan audiences’ opening night. We’re not looking to put up crazy television or attendance numbers overnight. We want to build slow and steady and be a long-term business over the years.”

The AAF will begin its inaugural, 10-week season on Feb. 9, 2019, and the Hotshots begin Feb. 10 when they host the Salt Lake Stallions. The league is split into two conferences, Eastern and Western, with a four-team playoff to end with a championship game to be held in Las Vegas in late April.

The Hotshots play in the Western Conference along with the Salt Lake Stallions, San Antonio Commanders and San Diego Fleet. The Eastern Conference consists of the Atlanta Legends, Birmingham Iron, Memphis Express and Orlando Apollos.

Neuheisel, who was announced as the head coach of the Arizona team in May 2018, and the teams announced the name Hotshots in September as a tribute to the region’s firefighters. The team colors of green, orange and yellow were also selected because they are commonly worn by the fire crews.

Twelve players have local ties: former Northern Arizona defensive tackle Siupeli Anau, Arizona State defensive lineman Will Sutton, linebackers Carl Bradford and D.J. Calhoun and wide receiver Devin Lucien, along with University of Arizona tackle Lene Maiava and linebacker Scooby Wright.

“Right now, we are all teammates, but I do give some of the Arizona players some hard times, because that is what we do — it’s in our blood,” Sutton said during media day. “Our main thing is we want to go out and win gamesand the main thing we want

The Hotshots will play home games at Arizona State University Sun Devil Stadium.

Sutton was quick to point to the home grown talent and the chance to play again at ASU Sun Devil Stadium.

“This makes ASU fans exited for this because we get to play in front of them and my social media has been blowing up,” Sutton said. “All us ASU guys are excited to play at Sun Devil Stadium again.”

Most of the players said they are excited because they get to further their football career after either just missing in the NFL. “This is great because we get the opportunity to play here,” former ASU defensive back Robert Nelson said.

“What is the point of the NFL tag if you don’t get to play? This is a great opportunity to have fun and play and I want to play and show everyone I am the best and help my team be the best.”

Hotshots president Scott Brubaker said the goal is to put a winning team on the field and build an organization that is strong both on and off the field.

“It is pop culture now in sports to talk about process, but we are all very much about process,” Brubaker said.

“We put a good process in place on the field, off the field and in the community, which has a strong marketing, strong business relationship and good community. If we can do that, the results will come.”

Neuheisel added that he believes the league can be successful based on the demand for the game and if they can be a strong team.

“Sunday afternoon in February, March or April in Sun Devil Stadium, where would you rather be?” Neuheisel said. “Especially if the environment as I am promised by all the people working in the organization will be fan friendly, fan exciting and, hopefully, the play will match that.”

The Hotshots have been training in Surprise in preparation for the season but are focused on building their brand statewide.

“We are focused on a communitywide growth and we want everyone to have fun during our games,” Brubaker said.

Getting and giving this Christmas Wow, do I remember Christmas as a child. While many do not get celebrate Christmas the way I did, I was one of those fortunate ones.

The tree, the decorations, the love, the Christian upbringing (there’s nothing like a Christmas Eve service at a large Anglican or Episcopalian church) and the giving of gifts, made Christmas amazing.

What I remember most was all the presents under the tree. When I look at my grandchildren now on Christmas, I see myself back then. “Dude, it’s a gift harvest….to the attack!”

The message I understood at that age was, “It’s like my birthday…no…it’s even better than my birthday…it’s Christmas…it’s my

birthday on steroids.”

All those gifts to me, whether they be one or many, were all for me. Christmas became a better birthday for me than my birthday.

Another crucial aspect of my Christmas’ was that I wasn’t forgotten. My parents remembered me. My relatives remembered me.

When someone special missed giving me my present for Christmas, I would feel hurt, “They didn’t remember me.”

I imagine what is most hurtful to many who don’t have a Christmas adventure like I had, was not the presents. It was that it seemed to them like no one remembers them.

I don’t apologize for the Christmas I’ve experienced. I didn’t earn it, I didn’t deserve it, I didn’t work for it, I just received it. I wish everyone could experience Christmas the way I did.

at the age of 24, I began to understand Christmas.

Firstly, I realized it’s not my birthday. All of that giving was not about me, it was about Christ.

Giving was what I needed to focus on, not getting. I just posted a Face Book message saying: “If getting gifts is the center of your Christmas, Jesus never will be. Dude, it’s not your birthday.” I got the first sentence from Pastor Ashley Wooldridge. Aha. Secondly, I realized God didn’t forget. God remembered all the promises He made to His people.

Promises made seven hundred years before they were fulfilled.

Promises such as in Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel, which means God with us.”

Another promise in Micah 5:2, “And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; For out of you shall come forth a ruler, who will shepherd My people Israel.”

Here is a writing titled “God Didn’t Forget” by Craig Lounsbrough. “The beauty of Christmas is that God didn’t forget. Not now.

Not ever.

Despite man’s incessant proclivity to forget God, God never forgot man.

Peoria camps provide licensed childcare and coincide with the Peoria Unified School District (PUSD) calendar. Christmas.

It’s about giving. God even sent Magi from the east a year later to give gifts to Jesus. When the Magi arrived, “They opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11.

God remembered. Christmas is more about giving gifts than getting gifts. God did it. The Magi did it. And now you and I can do it.

This Christmas the best gift you

can give God is you. Then give a gift to someone less fortunate who really needs to be remembered. It’s not the gift that matters, they matter. They were remembered. God didn’t forget and neither did you.
