“Most businesses must report their taxes and file with the state by the 20th of each month for the previous month’s sales,” Budget and Finance Director Vicki Rios said. “Each business, since late 2017, files all the taxes and they are collected through the Arizona Department of Revenue and they process them and pay the city the following month.”

The City of Glendale is cleaning up its sales tax process after the State of Arizona began collecting sales taxes from businesses nearly two years ago and it is focused on collecting delinquent accounts.

For the first time in the city’s 108year history, the city has filed a lawsuit against a downtown business for back, unpaid privileged taxes.

TAXES FROM 1 makes sales in December, it must file with Arizona Department of Revenue by the 20th of January, and the city is paid what they are due in February.’

“So there is a delay in getting payment, but it is a fairly new process that we are all working through together,” Rios said.

The city contends it is owed $81,095.15 in back taxes, interest and penalties in the suit, filed by the city Oct. 2, 2018, against a downtown business for taxes owed from December 2012 through December 2016.

The lawsuit accuses a local business of, “ow(ing) plaintiff (Glendale) privilege tax and fees past due and owing for the time period of December 2012 through December 2016 in the amount of $44,921.88.”

Rios was quick to point out that this was the first time in city history that she can recall that it has gotten to the point of filing suit against a local business.

The suit, filed in Superior Court for the State of Arizona Tax Court, comes as City Hall officials are grappling with

a number of businesses that owe the city more than $1,700 in back taxes, prior to 2017.

Since late 2017, when the state took over collection of sales taxes from businesses, the city has participated in a pilot program with the Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) to where city staff can review tax cases since then by using state processes.

“The state is running a pilot program, which Glendale is involved in, to allow our collection people to collect on accounts through the states processes,” Rios said. “Our staff has to use state process, procedures and practices, as well as go to state facilities to use their computers for delinquent accounts that have occurred since the state took collection and we are allowed through this pilot program to collect on them.”

Attorneys for the city file tax lawsuits against businesses only as a last-ditch effort to recoup money from companies that repeatedly fail to pay.

“To my knowledge, this is the first time the City of Glendale has done this,”

Rios said. “When I was in Phoenix and Peoria, I was involved in a number of these and it is what cities do.”

Rios was unsure why it took the city so long to file this case, since it is attempting to recover taxes from 2012 through 2016.

“The reason this certain case took this long, it is hard to say why it got to this point,” Rios said. “Most businesses, when a collection attorney contacts them, either pay the back taxes or set up payment plans.”

When she worked in other cities, Rios estimated that out of 100 cases, approximately 20 will get to the point of filing suit, and of those, if it goes to court, the city prevails on most if not all of them.

“We are talking about sales taxes, so if it gets to that point, it has probably been researched and discussed and taxes

are taxes, you can’t get around them,” Rios said.

While discussing tax processes, Rios said the city sent 51 accounts to an outside collection attorney, Berthune & Associates, for review in collecting the delinquent accounts.

The city sent 51 accounts to them with the lowest at $1,700 and the high being $134,000, with Rios saying they used a certain criteria for deciding which businesses to file cases against.

“Our department and attorneys look at every account and we make contact with the business owners and try to arrange payment or set up payment plans with them,” Rios said. “Once it gets to this point, attorneys look at the response when business owners are contacted and if they set up payment plans and if they have assets, we can get such things as liens against them to collect from.”

GUS 2 and 3 will operate on Christmas Eve until 12:30 p.m. and will not be running Dec. 25, or Jan. 1. Reservations for Dial-a-Ride service for Christmas Day must be made by noon Dec. 24. Same day Dial-A-Ride service on Christmas Eve will be available until noon; there will be no same day service on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day. Reservations for Dial-a-Ride service for New Year’s Day must be made by noon Dec. 31. Reservations can be made by calling Glendale’s Transit Services at 623-930-3500. ADA service will be available on all holidays based on a Sunday fixed-route schedule.

While the Glendale Municipal Airport will remain open on these holidays, the airport terminal building will be closed for the Christmas holiday from 7 p.m. Dec. 24, until 6 a.m. Dec. 26.

The Glendale Visitor Center will be closed in observance of the Christmas holiday from noon Dec. 24 at noon until Dec. 26. Jan. 1, offices will be closed for the New Year holiday and will resume regular business hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 2. Glendale’s three public libraries will be closed Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) and Christmas Day (Dec. 25). There will be an early closure at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31) and closed New Year’s Day (Jan. 1).

Glendale’s Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center (FRAC) Christmas holiday hours will be 7 a.m. - noon on Christmas Eve (Dec. 24) and closed Christmas Day (Dec. 25). The day after Christmas, Dec. 26, FRAC will have limited hours from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. On New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31), hours are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. On New Year’s Day (TuesJan. 1), hours are 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The center will resume regular hours of operation (5:30 a.m. - 9 p.m.) Jan. 2. City employee speaks to the green of things

Just because we live in an arid land does not mean we have to be surrounded by all shades of brown.

Victoria Caster, water conservation specialist with the city of Glendale Conservation and Sustainable Living Division, spoke to Glendale Rotary Club members Dec. 6 about the many ways to live green efficiently. But first, she explained where all of the water comes from in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Water sources in the Valley are: • Salt River - from Salt River Project • Colorado River - Central Arizona Project • Reclaimed water - from water reclamation plants in Valley cities • Stored water credits Caster said there is a need for water conservation because of the growing population. With that growth comes the urban heat island effect. Add to that the state is in a 17-year drought.

Plus, there is the potential for a Colorado River shortage.

Caster said in Arizona and Glendale, the population has doubled, “but there is a culture of conservation in Arizona and Glendale exemplifies that.

From 1985 to 2016, Caster said, residents have continued to reduce their water usage.

The city has several water conservation programs, Caster said: • Youth education • Adult education • Community outreach • Landscape consultations

• Glendale water efficiency program “We’re in classrooms, teaching about water and landscaping,” she said.

In the adult education arena, Caster said her department conducts three to 10i classes for the public every year.

The classes may teach how to grow vegetable gardens — when is the best time to plant — or they may teach water efficiency.

“We have a very robust adult education program,” Caster said.

She reminded her audience about the programming through the library.

She said there are Salt River Project shade tree events, a Glendale garden gathering and green festivals.

Caster noted the direct services offered by the city, including the

landscape consultation, where a city employee will come and talk about how and what to plant for the most energy efficiency. The city also issues a water waste report. And, there is a special program for commercial businesses.

A new map is now available for the xeriscape garden at Glendale Main Library.

Caster said there are now about 200 different plants in the cactus garden.

In the Habitat Garden — an outdoor garden — students can come and learn.

The Tree Trail is along the western fence of the xeriscape garden. She was asked about the best trees to plant in the Glendale area, and she said it was important to know the right tree for the right place. She suggested purchasing small drought-tolerant trees and not overwatering them. She said desert trees will use all the water you give them, but sometimes they use too much and grow too fast. This makes them susceptible to breakage during a storm.

“If you buy the right tree for the right place, it will last 40 years,” she said.

Another program of her department is the Food Forest. It highlights how desert plants are edible. The Food Forest won the Arizona Forward Crescordia Award.

“It’s the first one in Arizona we know about,” Caster said.

Letter to the Editor New car registration fee a bad idea

I think it is a bad idea to allow the Director (Director of ADOT, an unelected office,) to set the fee “Determined by the director annually for each fiscal year.”

The Republicans (such courage!) al-

ways express abhorrence to raising taxes so they skirt around by allowing fees to be set absent any legislative oversight.

Sure, HB 2166 has certain safeguards but once it becomes law, Dec. 1, any oversight will be sporadic until public pressure forces a closer look.

Two Arizona Auditor General re-

ports, one of The Department of Public Safety, 12/5/16, Report 17-301 and one of ADOT, 9/28/15, Report 15-113 pointed out deficiencies that I hope both agencies are correcting before they get additional money (HB2166) they can’t account for.

Glendale school 1 of 5 state finalists in national STEM contest Five schools in Arizona are being recognized nationally for inspiring change in their local communities through STEM education, including Sierra Verde STEAM Academy in Glendale.

Selected from thousands of entries nationwide, Sierra Verde STEAM Academy has just been named a state finalist in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest – a nationwide competition that challenges students to creatively use STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills to address realworld issues in their communities.

Five Arizona schools are among the nation’s 250 state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest, a program that encourages students to solve real-world issues in their community using classroom skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The state finalist schools were chosen based on their creative and strategic proposals to solve complicated issues that affect their communities by using STEM learning. All 250 teachers selected as state finalists will receive one Samsung tablet for their classrooms and have the opportunity to advance in the competition for additional prizes and educational opportunities.

With $2 million* in technology on the line, teachers from the five state finalist schools will submit a lesson plan outlining how students will tackle the local issue using STEM skills to ultimately improve the greater community.

National finalists: Ten national finalists will be selected to attend a pitch event, where they will present their project to a panel of judges.

For achieving national finalist status, seven schools will receive a $50,000 Samsung technology package. The other three will progress to the national winner stage.

National grand prize winners: Three national winners will be selected, and each will receive $100,000 in classroom Samsung technology and supplies Community Choice Award: The general public will elect one winner from the 10 national finalists who will be eligible to win an additional $10,000 Samsung technology package.

Arizona Coyotes help GESD begin roller hockey program

After the Arizona Coyotes announced the introduction of a new set of physical education curriculum into local schools, with Glendale Elementary School District being one of the 16 districts announced as participating, Bicentennial South was the first to receive their equipment during a Dec. 7 event.

“We have very involved teachers and they work so hard in finding opportunities and (Bicentennial South physical education teacher Nikki) Ferguson brought it to our attention and asked if we could participate in the program,” GESD Director of Curriculum and Instruction Norman Jauregui said. “We (at the district) thought it was great idea and that is why this program is here. It really came directly from the teachers and wanted to implement it and work with the Coyotes and bring it to the kids.”

While Bicentennial South was the first to receive the equipment, Jauregui said it would be implemented district wide over the next week.

“I believe the equipment is being delivered district wide today, but the program should be up and running by next week,” Jauregui said.

to create a street hockey curriculum for Valley students. The curriculum will be added to over 300 schools in Maricopa and Pima counties in the 2018-19 school year, 200 more schools in 2019-20 and another 200 schools in 2020-21.

Ferguson said they became part of the program through hockey fans.

“We got lucky because a fellow teacher who is a big hockey fan heard about this and mentioned it,” Ferguson said. “With the Coyotes working on player development, they used to have direct instruction if you called and asked, it has now evolved into a curriculum for teacher to do it and they are bringing it to schools.”

Ferguson added that the donations help the district as they suffer with budget issues and with physical education often one of the programs that are cut when budget issues arise.

“It means the world to us because, working with budget crunches we are often considered on the outside looking in, and anytime we can get extra help from a professional team like the Coyotes, it helps us tremendously,” Ferguson said.

The curriculum will impact kids from kindergarten through eighth grade with each school received $1,500 in Coyotes-branded street-hockey equipment, which will included 50 sticks, 50 balls, 50 two-colored vests, two hockey nets, see

The curriculum teaches kids the basics of hockey as well as how to play the game and introduce the game to students who may not have the opportunity to play hockey.

“The curriculum involves various components such as sportsmanship and the rules and guidelines of hockey and it is really trying to motivate students to understand how hockey can help them participate in a different team sport that maybe they would not have access to

and so it is a unique sport that they can learn,” Jauregui said. “We normally don’t have this type of equipment so the great thing about the program is they get the equipment to use and the kids are really excited about it and we are excited about having that in our district.”

As the schools begin implementing the program, Ferguson is excited about the future of the program and points to the success of Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews, who is from Scottsdale.

“This program gives our kids to play something totally different and new they can learn the basics and help them become great hockey players, besides, look one of the best hockey players in the world is from Arizona,” Ferguson said. “Hopefully this program grows to all the schools in the state and helps grow the game here.”

The Coyotes have emphasized the development of youth hockey in Arizona, including among girls. Last summer, former Olympian Lyndsey Fry teamed with the Coyotes to create the only NHL-funded development program designed for girls only as she was hired as a special advisor.

Glendale Rotary Club honors students from three Glendale high schools each month during the school year. This month, the students are Karol Rios from Independence, Isabelle Chapman from Apollo, and Dishine Gibson from Glendale.

Karol is in the top 1 percent of her class at Independence, is a member of National Honor Society and Student Council. She plans to attend college and major in education to become a teacher.

Dishine is a member of National Honor Society, the Conservation Club and is the manager of the Glendale High School girls volleyball team. He is in A P Social Studies, and plans to attend college and pursue a career in programming security or fashion design.

Glendale Police Department awarded multiple grants In support of the Glendale Police Department’s commitment to traffic safety and vehicular collision reduction; the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety has partnered with Glendale PD and awarded four grants which will aid in ongoing efforts in making Valley roadways safe.

Occupant Protection Enforcement grant in the amount of $20,000 with a grant period of Oct. 1, 2018 to Sept. 30,

2019. The grant will be used to fund occupant protection education to include child safety seat installation as well as enforcement during the national Click it or Ticket campaign and the state’s Child Passenger Safety week.

DUI/Impairment Driving Enforcement grant in the amount of $40,000 with a grant period of Oct. 1, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2019. The grant will make innovative

programs possible that will be aimed at educating drivers about the dangers of impaired driving as well as funding the participation in DUI task forces throughout the year.

Accident Investigation Training grant in the amount of $6,000 with a grant period of Oct. 1, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2019.

The grant will fund the ongoing training required for Glendale’s Vehicular Crime

Squad to remain qualified to conduct accident reconstructions and provide expert testimony in court.

Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant in the amount of $25,000 with a grant period of Oct. 1, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2019. The grant will provide resources needed to enforce and provided education regarding aggressive driving, excessive speed and racing.

night that party was killed or badly beaten, I believe most judges will err on the side of safety. The Legislature felt the need for the order was more important than the need to appear fair and give all sides input prior to issuing the order.

Orders of protection do not stop domestic violence, but it can discourage someone. I tell people bullets and knives go right through these pieces of paper called an order of protection. The paper does not even slow a knife or bullet down.

The angry person might decide not to do something if he or she knows he will go to jail but if the angry person is willing to commit a felony, such as assault or murder, that person is not going to be concerned about violating an order of protection, which would be a misdemeanor.

Having an order of protection does make it easier to arrest the angry person, but it is not protection.

Lesson: Domestic violence is a crime with or without an order of protection.

They call it ‘The Mexico Build’

Volunteers left Glendale the afternoon of Nov. 27 and returned Nov. 31.

They completed their mission at a site on the outskirts of Rocky Point, Mexico.

It was the 13th trip Glendale Rotary Club members and their friends and family made for “The Mexico Build.”

About 16 volunteers made the trip this year to provide a home for a needy family. The mayor of the town makes the family selection and rounds up his own crew to join the volunteers from Glendale Rotary. Then, it’s two full days of pounding hammers and the noise of drills.

The build in Mexico has been taking place on an annual basis, with Rotary members Jim Kieffer and Merle Graber directing traffic and rounding up building supplies. A lot of supplies are paid for with money collected at fundraisers,such as the chili cookoff, coming up at the beginning of the year.

Banner Thunderbird and Hope Community collect toys for patients

Banner Thunderbird and Hope Community Services partnered to get thousands of toys donated from the community and staff that will give children patients and foster kids the chance to have a happy holiday.

“We partner with Hope Community Services (HCS), formerly known as West Valley Child Crisis Center, to do a community toy drive,” Banner Thunderbird Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Deb Krmpotic said. “They need toys and we need toys for our toy closets and we partner together on the toy drive each year.”

Banner Thunderbird Medical Center pediatric department uses a toy closet that contains hundreds of items given to children to ease their fears when facing medical procedures. The donations restock that closet and allows the hospital to ease children’s fears during any surgical procedure or extended stay in the hospital.

“(HCS) needs toys and we need toys, so we work together to get thousands of toys donated from the community,” Krmpotic said. “We use the toy closet to ease kid’s fears of being hospitalized and HCS uses toys for foster kids and we partner together on this event every year.”

Each year, Banner and Hope Community Services host a toy collection for the company to help refill the toy closet and for foster children’s services through Hope Community Services.

Donations for the toy closet have been ongoing since 2011 and the toys are given out at Banner Thunderbird to a child with the hope of making their stay a little more bearable by providing a creative outlet for them. Toys, crayons, coloring books and any items for children are donated and used to ease patients’ fears and reward them with a small item to make them feel safer.

“These toys go into our closets and while children have a procedure, they get to make a selection from the closet to help ease their fears,” Krmpotic said. “It see

Banner and HCS partner together to get the donations for both the hospital and HCS to give foster children gifts during the holidays and HCS Chief Executive Officer Kary Goitia said it helps them immensely.

“It means that the community is stepping in to help service our kids and give them a happy holiday,” Goitia said. “We work all year long to make sure kids are getting services they need and are safe in their environment, but during the holidays we want to do something a little bit more special for those kids and the community always seems to step up to assist us.”

HCS, formerly West Valley Child Crisis Center, works to create lasting solutions for children and families by providing innovative programs to foster safe and healthy communities within Arizona.

Its goal is to provide a safe and healthy environment where they can thrive and they provide safe placement services, parent education and training and behavioral health services for children who have experienced trauma, such as abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

Goitia said every year Hope works with Banner to get the assistance and,

every year, their numbers get larger.

“Banner has been an amazing partner and whenever we work together, we have a great partnership,’ Goitia said. “We work together to service kids in the West Valley and by joining forces with Banner, we always get more and more donations together.”

Banner and HCS, along with the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, provided cookies and snacks while Mayor Jerry Weiers played Santa and the crowd of more than 50 listened to Christmas songs while celebrating the accomplishment.

“Personally, I always tear up when we hand out these toys to kids because I have children of my own and I cannot imagine them not having a Christmas,” Goitia said. “So to be able to make them smile for a moment and to see the enjoyment on their faces makes all the work we do worth it.”

Krmpotic said the Banner employees and community have always stepped up to donate when they hold these events.

“It speaks to everyone in the community and our staff the generosity and spirit of giving and it warms my heart to have that kind of tangible demonstration of generosity,” Krmpotic said.

As they collected the toys, Krmpotic said the city and community continue to surprise her with their giving.

dale, and we may have a little clout there, but at the same time, when it comes from the heart and they know it is important, the community always seems to come

Dillard’s Christmas ‘Southern Living Christmas Cookbook’ sales benefit Ronald McDonald House Dillard’s Inc. will donate a portion of proceeds from the sale of its “Southern Living Christmas Cookbook” to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central and Northern Arizona (RMHC-CNAZ) as part of a nationwide fundraising effort for local RMHC chapters.

Arts & Entertainment Hugh Jackman to play Gila River Arena next summer

It is not “Wolverine” on tour, but Hugh Jackson is planning a world tour that will make a stop at Gila River Arena next summer.

Academy Award nominated, Golden Globe and Tony award-winning performer, Jackman is preparing his first world tour to showcase songs from his many performances.

“I am going to be doing a big arena tour this summer,” Jackman said during a press conference. “This is a dream come true for me, and I have done this is Australia before, but now I am going around the world.”

The show, titled “The Man. The Music. The Show,” will feature Jackman singing songs from such musical movie performances as ‘The Greatest Showman,” “Les Misérables,” as well as Broadway musical and other musical selections.

“I am singing, dancing and telling stories during the shows,” Jackman said. “It is a one-man show with a 26piece orchestra and about 30 singers and dancers.”

Jackman said this is a way to showcase his early career on stage in front of musical fans around the world.

“I am doing my favorite songs and I am going to try and do a huge variety,” Jackman said. “’The Greatest Showman’ is very popular, but I also want to do songs from ‘Les Misérables’ and stuff from Broadway and I have been training for a while for this tour.”

PlayStation announced last week it will return as the Fiesta Bowl title sponsor as part of a multi-year agreement with ESPN. As one of the annual College Football Playoff New Year’s Six Bowl games, the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl will be played at 11 a.m. local time Jan. 1 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

The multimedia deal (TV and digital) is part of a broader agreement that includes other marquee ESPN programming throughout the year. It builds on an

already successful relationship between ESPN and PlayStation, including the ESPN app for PlayStation 4 and the ESPN networks available for streaming on PlayStation Vue. Kellis battles back, falls late to Paradise Valley 3-2

Facing their biggest test on the new season, Kellis boys soccer head coach Jonathan Perdomo knew his team faced a big test against Paradise Valley Dec. 4 at Kellis High School.

His young team, starting only two seniors, faced a playoff team from last season in the Trojans and battled back from a two-goal deficit, before losing 3-2. Kellis lost a play-in game last season and has not made the playoffs since 2010.

“This was a huge test, to see what we had early on this season,” Perdomo said.

“Even falling down two early, these kids never stopped battling and probably should have gotten the victory, but we will learn from this.”

Kellis came out and opened the game a little flat as Paradise Valley pressed on offense early, getting a couple of scoring opportunities but the Kellis defense was able to keep the Trojans to only two shots on senior goalkeeper Alfredo Perez.

“We were a little flat early and, give Paradise Valley credit, they came out and pressed us early,” Perdomo said.

“But with my young team, we keep battling and they never stopped pushing early.”

Kellis had scoring opportunities early, when Gavin Palomo took a pass from Mckinley Ruiz down the sideline with 23 minutes left in the first half, but Palomo fired the shot just over the goal.

Coyotes show improvements as starting goaltender lost indefinitely

recent road trip. “(Kuemper) in good health, it’s just a matter of getting his timing back and he should be back in the short term,” Chayka said. “Obviously, with (Raanta) out, (Kuemper) is an important piece for us moving forward and I think he’s shown to be one of the best backups in the league. Any time there is an injury, there is opportunity and this will be an opportunity for him to get an extended look, and he’ll get that opportunity to show that he can be a starter in the League.”

Before his injury, Kuemper was 4-5-2 with a 2.71 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage in 11 games. Hill, who was recalled from Tucson Nov. 24, has also been successful with a 4-2-0 record and 1.62 .939 save percentage in seven games.

“Hill has come in and done a nice job for us and he’s a good young goalie and he’s come in and won some games for us and done some good things,” Chayka said. “Like all young goalies,

he’ll have some ups and downs, but we’re excited to have him in our stable.

He’ll get some games as well. I think it will be a bit of goalie by committee at this stage. Whoever’s playing well will get the net.”

Since the beginning of December, the Coyotes have split their first four games of the month, winning the first two, 61 over St. Louis (Dec. 1) and 2-1 over Los Angeles Dec. 4, before dropping the last two 4-2 to Washington and 5-3 to San Jose.

Against St. Louis, six different Coyotes scored and Hill stopped 25 saves as the Coyotes won their third in a row.

Clayton Keller had a goal and two assists and Richard Panik had a goal and an assist with Nick Schmaltz and Derek Stepan each adding two assists in the win.

“We wanted to jump out and get a good start, something that’s been lacking. I thought guys were locked in and it was good to see,” Coyotes coach Rick

Tocchet said. “We had a lot of shots (44) and a lot of chances, and it builds momentum.”

With both Coyotes goalies Raanta and Kuemper both out with a lowerbody injuries, Hill won his second straight game in relief.

“To come in and give us that calmness he’s provided when other teams had chances, he’s done a tremendous job both games he’s started,” Coyotes forward Christian Fischer said.

Against Los Angeles, Hill continued his strong play, stopping 25 saves and Lawson Crouse scored a short-handed goal and Schmaltz scored the powerplay in securing the Coyotes fourth victory in a row.

“Hilly was good again,” Tocchet said.

“He’s unflappable right now, you know.

He’s feeling it and it’s a nice story.”

Hill, 22, has been the goaltender in all four games during the winning streak, making the save on 84 of 86 shots since replacing Raanta. Tocchet has not decided whether he will continue to start Hill with Raanta out and Kuemper expected to return soon.

“Honestly, for me, we’re just taking it a day at a time,” Tocchet said. “He’s done a great job for us since that Minnesota game on. He’s come in and he’s put the plug in for us. We have some guys hurt and he’s holding the fort.”

In the Dec. 6 game against Washington, Andre Burakovsky scored with less them five minutes left in regulation to end the Coyotes’ four-game winning streak at Gila River Arena.

The Coyotes play at New York Rangers Dec. 14 and at Carolina Dec. 16 before returning to Gila River Arena for three games against the New York Islanders (Dec. 18), Montreal Canadiens (Dec. 20) and Colorado Avalanche (Dec. 22).

“We came out strong and had some good chances, but just couldn’t get one in the net.”

Palomo had a chance 10 minutes into the second half but fired a shot over the net while Espoir Ntezeyombi took a corner kick in front and tipped it towards the net but Rodriguez made a diving save to keep the game tied.

With just over 19 minutes left in the game, Byishimo got the ball 10

yards out in front and fired a shot but Perez made a diving save. As Perez tried to get up, the rebound bounced over to Taylor who tipped in into the back of the net for what proved to be the game winner.

“We had chances and we kept battling,” Perdomo said. “Having a young team, we never stopped fighting and had chances but couldn’t get a bounce in our favor. The kids kept fighting and

we will learn from this and continue to get better.”

As the Cougars work toward a playoff spot for the first time in eight years, Perdomo believes his team is headed in the right direction.

“Even though we are a young team, we are working hard and I think these kids are ahead of schedule,” Perdomo said. “Do I think this team is a playoff team right now? Absolutely.”

As the Arizona Coyotes continue to showcase their young roster, they head into the holidays seven points out of the final playoff spot as of Dec. 10.

The Coyotes have played well, after beginning last season winning nine games through December, even though the team has been streaky again with a five-game winning streak and a fourgame losing streak.

As the team continues to play well on the ice, players continue to be snake bitten. Starting goaltender Antti Raanta is sidelined with a lower-body injury and may miss the remainder of the season.

Raanta underwent a medical procedure to repair his injury when more extensive damage was discovered and repaired.

“The good news is that it was a great repair and his long-term health is in great standing,” General Manager John Chayka said. “The recovery will be a little longer than we had hoped or expected, but at the same time, again, he has the ability to preserve his long-term health. That’s the main thing, and we’ve been able to do that.”

Chayka said it’s possible that Raanta will return this season, but the team is not expecting it.

“As we get further down the rehab process, we’ll know more, but for now, he’s out indefinitely, and there’s a good chance he misses the entire season,” Chayka said.

To replace Raanta, the team will use Darcy Kuemper and Adin Hill in goal and claimed goaltender Calvin Pickard off waivers from Philadelphia Nov. 29.

Kuemper also has been sidelined with an injury, having not played since Nov. 21, but is expected to return during the

We need a little Christmas now I’m one of those people who loves to hear Christmas music from Thanksgiving through Christmas and beyond. Obviously, there are more people like me out there or there wouldn’t be so many radio stations playing the same 15 secular Christmas songs in different versions by different artists 24 hours a day.

When my son, Jonathan, was growing up, he would not allow the rest of us in the family play Christmas songs until the day after Thanksgiving. Why? He would start getting excited too early. However, the rest of us in our family would still sing Christmas songs on the inside.

One of the songs I like is the song, “We Need a Little Christmas.” Yes, I know, that dates me. It captures something about Christmas time that is captivating. Maybe this song comes at Christmas because it is one month after the elections in America. We need some Christmas after screening all those horrible election commercials.

“We Need a Little Christmas” was first introduced in the musical play, “Mame.” Auntie Mame lost her money in the stock market crash. Things were bleak. It was a week before Thanksgiving and it hadn’t snowed yet, but Mame and her nephew needed Christmas now. They needed hope. They needed joy. They needed cheering up. They needed “It’s going be OK.” They wanted December in November.

Here’s some of the lyrics of “We Need a Little Christmas” in a shortened

form. This song transports them and us to somewhere else and to sometime else, escaping for a moment, the chaos they were currently experiencing. Sound familiar?

“Haul out the holly, put up the tree before my spirit falls again. Fill up the stocking, I may be rushing things but deck the halls again now. For we need a little Christmas, right this very minute, candles in the window, carols at the spinet. Yes, we need a little Christmas, right this very minute. (It hasn’t snowed a single flurry but Santa, dear, we’re in a hurry).

“So, climb down the chimney, put up the brightest string of lights I’ve ever seen. Slice up the fruitcake, it’s time we hung some tinsel on that evergreen bough. For I’ve grown a little leaner, grown a little colder, grown a little sadder, grown a little older. And I need a little angel, sitting on my shoulder, I need a little Christmas now.

“For we need a little music, need a little laughter, need a little singing, ringing through the rafter. And we need a little snappy, ‘Happy ever after.’ We need a little Christmas now.”

I like the crispness and the perspective of the lines; “And I need a little angel, sitting on my shoulder” … “need a little snappy, happy ever after.” Maybe we could call the feeling of this song, Merry Crispness.

There is a crispness to Christmas.

People may not admire Christianity or churches but most everyone admires Jesus, the Christ. What we need is to put the Christ back in Christmas, so we can have Christlikeness now.

Obituaries Stan Turner Early on the morning of Dec. 6, 2018, Stan Turner, 63, slipped free of his mortal bindings and sailed untethered into the ever-after. Family and friends alike will remember him for his kind spirit, sharp wit, and steadfast loyalty to the people and causes he believed in.

Mr. Turner was born May 24, 1955 in Phoenix to John and Brookwellyn Turner and raised in Glendale. He made his living as a graphic designer for

newspapers in Lubbock, Phoenix, Sun City, and Prescott, and served as chair of the Yavapai County Democratic Party for several years.

Mr. Turner was predeceased by his father, son, Neal Bradley

Turner, and wives, Mary Wulf and Kris Kaoni Turner. He is survived by his mother; son, Chris Gurnsey (Kimm Tufano); brothers, John and Bart; granddaughters, Sara and Ashlynn; and nephew, Lucas.

Mr. Turner was a good man.

He will be missed. Donations in his memory sent to Heifer International are appreciated.

Jennifer Joan Klein Jennifer Joan Klein, 59, of Glendale passed away Dec. 4, 2018. A lifelong Arizona native, Mrs. Klein was born in Phoenix. She was a Glendale High School graduate and a very active softball player and played with the women’s Beamer’s softball team. She worked as an administrative assistant.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Joan Frizzell, and her sister, Lola Marie (Kimmi) Frizzell. She is survived by her father, JC Frizzell; lifelong

companion, Ricky Dean Klein; brother, Dr. Jason Frizzell; sisters, Carolyn Sue Nobbe and Sandra Denise Kozorra; grandchildren, Kaler James Paul Klein and Brynn Siobahn Klein; and several aunts, uncles and other extended family members.

Visitation and funeral service was Dec. 12 at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center Chapel, 12420 N. 103rd Ave., Sun City.

Interment followed at Glendale Memorial Park Cemetery. Condolences may be shared at www. menkefuneralhome.com.
