After Peoria recently announced a consensus to have the Bird scooter company supply proof that the scooters are worth allowing on city streets, Glendale has noticed the scooters have arrived within city limits.

While there is no official hearing scheduled for a future council workshop or meeting, Ocotillo Councilmember Jamie Aldama has had contact with the company about the scooters.

“The Bird company contacted me and asked if I would be willing to meet and discuss the concept of electric scooters,” Aldama said. “Most people I have spoken with feel the scooters have purpose and are overall okay with them.”

Bird scooters started showing up on sidewalks throughout Glendale in late October, giving residents and visitors a new option to get around town. see

Council asks for redesign of Heroes Regional Park Library public art

After months of research on art citizens wanted to see installed at Heroes Regional Park, Glendale councilmembers requested changes during the Nov. 13 workshop presentation of the art designs.

City Council reviewed the final design for the Heroes Regional Park Library public art during the Nov. 13 workshop and gave staff consensus on direction to move forward with fabrication and installation of artwork in alignment with the building construction timeline.

“Artists created a preliminary design during Aug. 16 and 18 Yucca District meetings,” Morgan Vahabzadeh, arts and culture program manager, said.

“Plans are in place and we are working with contractors of the building to coordinate the artists.”

In late December last year, council approved $200,000 from the Municipal Art Fund to produce a public art project for the Heroes Regional Park Library.

The project would create an art design for the primary interior, flooring, and entry ways and glass on doors.

Through a series of meetings held in February to review more than 99 applications, the panel selected Pete Goldlust as the recommended artist for the project.

Goldlust created the art project titled, “Neighborhood Roots: Sugar Beets to Cotton and Beyond.”

The design has sugar beets, a blimp, quail, poppies, yucca and assorted plants unique to the Arizona landscape.

It also had a rocket ship, planet, and other items in the design.

Staff pointed to the unique art elements design will help beautify the facility and positively enhance residents’ experiences to the library, now under construction.

Public art has the potential of fostering a sense of community identity and can serve as a point of pride for neighborhood residents. Installation of the new project will contribute to the arts commission’s goal to ensure public art is distributed throughout the city.

Council was not entirely happy with the selected design.

“I don’t understand that blimp, rocket ship or planet,” Yucca Councilmember Joyce Clark said. “I support this project, the concepts are great and the sandblasting on the floor, stained glass and entry designs are terrific, I have trouble with the blimp, planet and rocket.”

Staff was quick to point out that they are on a timetable on the project and art is up to the viewer, but council suggested changes, including adding something to represent the early people who harvested the fields.

“Art is subjective and with neighborhood roots, the focus was on imagery of symbolic elements and if you put one human figure, then someone else

will say they were not represented,” Vahabzadeh said. “What you are saying is valid, but the theme developed throughout this process was the imagery that was used.”

“I am asking for the removal of those three items I mentioned,” Clark said. “I would like those three items removed and replaced with items that are already included.”

Mayor Jerry Weiers asked for the addition of a citrus element to the design.

Council gave consensus to remove the blimp, space ship and planet and add a citrus tree and airplane to represent Glendale Municipal Airport as well as possible items to address heroes at the park.

To reduce crime, think outside the prison cell In the years I served with the Glendale Police Department, I learned many things. I learned how to teach new recruits to shoot firearms. I learned to spot the tell-tale signs of domestic violence, even when the victim isn’t saying much. I learned that drug addiction could make good people do terrible things to themselves and their family.

I also learned about what stops crime — and what doesn’t. No. 1 lesson: Relying on prison is a mistake. I have helped arrest many people for drug and property crimes.

I remember one big bust when we took down a local trafficking ring.

Before we had even finished booking them into jail, others had taken their place. And when these people came out of prison, with criminal records they would never shake, they were at high risk to return to the drug trade.

We need prison for people who pose a danger to our community. But for most people, prison isn’t a long-term solution — it is a school to become a better criminal.

Unfortunately, our state has not learned this lesson yet.

According to a new report by the bipartisan group FWD.us, since 2000, Arizona has increased the number of people sent to prison for non-violent crimes by 80 percent, and has tripled the number of people sent to prison on their first felony conviction. Arizona also sends people to prison for longer, with drug sentences that are 40-percent longer than the national average and property crime sentences that are twice the national average.

Today, Arizona has the fourth-highest imprisonment rate in the country — we lock up a greater share of our citizens than any state except for Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Last year, Arizona taxpayers spent more than $1 billion on prisons. A few years ago, we even had to pay $3 million in damages to a private prison for not filling enough beds.

As Arizona has increasingly invested in a broken “tough on crime” prison strategy, most other states are figuring out how to reduce crime while shrinking the size of their prison populations. In the last 10 years, 32 states have reduced crime and imprisonment at the same time. Violent crime has fallen twice as fast in those 32 states as it did in Arizona.

If more prison isn’t the solution, what will reduce harm and keep our community safe? So many of the calls I received as an officer were health issues related to substance abuse in some way. Yet, when we lock up someone selling drugs, it doesn’t improve public safety — it just creates a job opening for someone else to take their place. We must reduce drug-related crime by addressing the demand for drugs, including the mental health issues that drive many people to ad-

diction.

I do see some promising efforts in our community. The Tempe Police Department is working to prevent and de-escalate mental health crises before they become crimes. They are training all of their officers in mental health first aid and crisis-intervention training. On mental health-related calls, their officers partner with professional clinicians through C.A.R.E. 7. They support victims so the victims will talk to the police instead of taking matters into their own hands.

And Tempe PD rewards officers for preventing serious crime, rather than encouraging low-level arrests and citations that don’t improve public safety.

I don’t pretend to have all the answers. But I know that we cannot arrest and incarcerate our way out of this problem. We should use more effective treatment to get at the root of crime. We should expand training to stop mental health crises from leading to crime. We should make it easier, not harder, for people with convictions to find a job and an apartment so they stay away from crime. And we can follow the lead of other states building stronger communities with smaller prison populations.

We need to change our approach.

Let’s start thinking outside the prison cell.

President Trump says vote fraud is rampant and people who commit this fraud are voting then go outside and

change clothes, another shirt and put on a hat, and then go back in the polls and vote again. I mean after waiting 2, 3 or 4 hours in line to vote, and sometimes much longer.

So far, the president hasn’t come up

with one clue that his assertion is true.

I’m sure he doesn’t mind the press publishing this claim.

After all, if he said it, it isn’t fake news, or is it?

GLEN LAKES FROM 1 “My five sons all worked at the course when they were teenagers,” Marie Scillieri said. “I am a Realtor and what I understand is they want to put houses and condos in there and we do not want houses or condos there because it is a beautiful open green space.”

In response to the closure, council heard an update Nov. 13 on what the cost would be to re-open the course as soon as possible or just keep the course irrigated and manicured before a possible sale of the land.

“There are two types of temporary club houses if council would like to get the course open as soon as possible,” Director of Field Operations Michelle Woytenko said during the Nov. 13 meeting. “We would have to get a recreational vehicle for approximately 60 days which has not generated electricity and portable restrooms.”

Staff estimated the costs to get the course open as soon as possible to be at nearly $200,000 for a temporary club house, generator for irrigation pumps, electrical hookups for the maintenance

yard and shade structures. Estimated costs to get it open are more than $200,000.

But citizens were adamant they could get volunteers to offer services and donated supplies to rebuild the course after a men’s group recently repainted curbs, driving range signs, tee boxes and other items before the course was closed.

“All those projects were done by concerned citizens in support of Glen Lakes,” Glendale resident Phil Erickson said. “Granted, these projects were done and it fixed the curb appeal, but it brought playing conditions back to years ago. We recently got 1,300 signatures in support of the course and I am sure many would donate time and supplies to continue to improve the course.”

After the speakers expressed their concerns and hopes to save the course, councilmembers got a chance to address what speakers had said.

and we found ourselves in this situation, this would look entirely different and we would know it could not be a success, but we are not in that situation,” Barrel Councilmember Bart Turner said. “Not by any fault of this council, but this course has had virtually nothing into it for years.”

Staff estimates the added costs on the course to get through the end of the fiscal year would be nearly $430,000, which includes the trailers, electrical hookups, generator and fuel, among other needed items to get the course open as soon as possible.

Also during the Oct. 23 workshop, staff estimated cost to improving Glen Lakes was between $5.1 million and $7.6 million if they wanted the course to remain long-term.

Among the issues that need repair include between $2.1 million and $2.9 million to rebuild the pro shop and clubhouse, $800,000 and $1 million for irrigation system, and $750,000 and $1 million for a new maintenance facility.

Many citizens questioned the totals on those estimates. “(Council) says you’re all tired of hearing how this happened and I am, too,” Sahuaro resident Sam McConnell said. “Something else I am tired of hearing is $5.1 to $7.6 million to redo the golf course. (Councilmember Joyce) Clark, you were right. I walked through and got a feeling about what is going on here. We do not want Pebble Beach; we want a really nice municipal golf course here and those amounts just do not seem correct.”

All councilmembers then thanked everyone for attending and made sure to take the comments into consideration.

“This is your tax dollars and short of creating and passing a dedicated tax to fit (the course), what I see today, not only do you support this, I haven’t heard any opposition against keeping the course open,” Ocotillo Councilmember Jamie Aldama said. “No councilmember up here is responsible for what has happened to that course, it was set up

to fail and I am glad that you all had your say.”

Golf Maintenance Solutions (GMS) took over operations of the course in March after Thom Harrison of Arizona Golf Ventures was removed as operator after years of running the course for the city.

The contract for GMS was a one-year contract, which allows for GMS 5W to maintain and operate Glen Lakes Golf Course for $429,500 from July 1, 2018, through June 30, 2019. The council also approved a contingency transfer of $90,980 to cover expenses through June 30, 2018. The contract was also supposed to be offset by income from rounds of golf played throughout the year.

Barrel Councilmember Bart Turner pointed out that the Golf Maintenance Solutions contract was for more than just operation of the course, but Golf Maintenance Solutions had already completed improvements to the course.

“The $429,500 contract is for more than just the operation of the course,” Turner said. “They have already done remedial improvements to the course, as well as repairs that nobody anticipated.”

Moments before the end of the meeting, Vice Mayor Lauren Tolmachoff said the $429,000 was after revenue was added.

“I promised when elected that I would make fiscally responsible decisions and the dollars are what they are,” Tolmachoff said. “I am still looking for answers and I know the $429,000 is after revenue and I just confirmed that via text.”

Councilmember Turner asked who confirmed the numbers via text.

“Can I ask who you text,” Turner asked.

“No, I will talk to you after the meeting,” Tolmachoff said.

Council was expected to hear an update on the actual costs if the course was opened during the Nov. 27 workshop.

Public Safety Man arrested after allegedly nearly running over two pedestrians A Glendale man was arrested Nov. 2 after almost running over two women and a young boy near Northern and 67th avenues.

According to a police spokesperson, officers responded to a home in the area after a call of a man who allegedly attempted to run the people over with his vehicle.

Officers arrested 50-year-old Tommy Mesa after witnesses told officers that he had consumed “multiple cans of alcoholic beverages and numerous shots of hard liquor.”

Witnesses also said Mesa had hit the young boy in the head before getting in his vehicle.

As Mesa attempted to drive away, officers said he sped away, forcing the mother to push her son off the road as she jumped out of the way of Mesa’s vehicle.

When officers arrived, Mesa was found sitting behind the wheel of his

vehicle and he reportedly admitted to driving away recklessly, but denied trying to hit the pedestrians.

Mesa was charged with three counts of endangerment.

Officers arrest man for assault Officers arrested a man Nov. 9 after he attacked a woman near Glendale and 43rd avenues.

The suspect, 20-year-old Jaren Hampton, reportedly was arrested naked after he attacked a woman as he tried to escape by stealing a bicycle.

Officers responded to the school where they found Hampton who was seen by several people near the school.

Hampton allegedly attacked one witness, knocking and pinning her to the ground, then punching her several times.

A police spokesperson said Hampton then reportedly tackled a person on a bicycle and tried to steal the bike to get away.

officers and has been charged with multiple crimes, including indecent exposure, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest.

Woman arrested after leaving young son alone Glendale police arrested a woman after she left her 6-year-old son alone twice in the same day.

According to a police spokesperson, 26-year-old Whitney Clarissa McNeal was arrested Nov. 5 after residents called officers on reports of a crying boy.

When officers arrived, officers found the 6-year-old boy alone in the apartment and crying near Northern and 67th avenues. Witnesses told officers they had contacted McNeal earlier in the same day of the boy crying, but she left him alone again to return to work.

According to the spokesperson, McNeal reportedly admitted to leaving the boy home alone, saying, “This was not the first time she had left him alone.”

She was arrested and charged with two counts of child abuse and the child was turned over to the Department of

SCOOTERS FROM 1 While it is unknown the exact number of scooters Bird dropped off within city limits, the company allows visitors to rent electric scooters anywhere using a Smartphone.

The scooters are dropped off around the city at 7 a.m. and are available until 8 p.m. when they are picked up and charged each night.

Users must download the Bird app to their phone and use it to locate a scooter and rent it. When they’re done, they simply lock the scooter and leave it for the next rider wherever they end up.

Riders are charged $1 initially, plus 14 cents per minute and the scooters can go up to 15 mph. A scooter goes for about 15 miles on each charge, and is for short trips.

“They are currently licensed in Glendale and representatives that met with city staff discussed many questions, including law enforcement, official ordinance and can the scooters be ridden on the street and how to ride them,” Aldama said. “We had a great dialogue with them.”

Aldama said that while the scooters are not currently scheduled to be discussed at a workshop or council meeting, it may be brought up in the future.

“I asked the city manager to look into how other cities are managing ordinances specific to electric scooters,” Aldama said. “This may return to the council in the future.”

Jay Davies, Peoria’s chief policy

advisor said during a recent Peoria City Council workshop, considerations addressed the fact the Bird scooter company is operating legally by purchasing a business license.

Peoria’s initial approach had been open-minded but with concerns of public safety, possible place making in the areas served by the scooter company, personal injuries to riders and others, much of those concerns could be attributed to riding the vehicle on a sidewalk.

Davies said Peoria contacted the company quickly and both explored the possibilities in the future and addressed concerns. After the scooters arrived, the city’s office of communications activated its social media, which received 15,000 responses over a 10-day period, Davies said.

Aldama said Glendale has yet to receive any specific complaints, and that he sent out a post on Face book and he said he received responses that were, “welcoming and some who were not so welcoming.”

company to pay licensing fees to operate in city limits.

The University of Arizona has banned the scooters on its campus and Arizona State University has also banned the scooters, while Tempe and Scottsdale have major conditions on them being allowed in their cities.

As the Bird scooters continue to grow in use and popularity, Aldama believes they have a place in Glendale.

“I feel electric scooters can provide a mode of transportation to individuals who need to travel a short distance and is not to be mistaken as a replacement for transportation,” Aldama said. “However, I do feel the electric scooters will aid in drawing additional pedestrian traffic to downtown when speaking of downtown specifically. This technology could be a catalyst in revitalizing downtown in that individuals can travel from business to business. College students may need this type of alternative transportation. I’m sure there are many other uses for electric scooters. In speaking with the Bird representatives, riders must be 18 years of age and have a current Driver’s License. I feel it is a great concept.”

‘Light up the Night’ Chanukah celebration at Westgate BYCHANA LEW Chabad of the Northwest Valley

Westgate Entertainment District, in partnership with Chabad of the Northwest Valley, announces the 8th annual Grand Menorah Lighting at 5.30 p.m.

Dec. 5 in Fountain Park.

The family friendly event will feature the lighting of a giant menorah, as well as Jewish music and entertainment along with the traditional holiday foods, including donuts and latkes and a special appearance of “Judah the Maccabee.”

Dignitaries and public officials, including Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers, will be in attendance with a special passing of the torch ceremony for lighting of the glow-in-the-dark menorah.

“Chanukah is a time for celebrating our Jewish values, and the menorah lighting is our pinnacle symbol of faith this time of year,” said Rabbi Sholom Lew, director, Chabad of the Northwest Valley. “We appreciate Westgate’s eagerness to embrace a comprehensive

holiday spirit with a Chanukah program that represents unity, light and joy for the entire West Valley community.”

Many activities will be glow-in-thedark themed to add to the central Chanukah concept of lighting up the darkness, from the glow-in-the-dark menorah to a fire dance show, glow-in-the-dark crafts and holiday treats and of course glow attire for all.

For the Jewish religion, Hanukkah marks the victory of the Jews against ancient Greek-Hellenist persecution and religious oppression some 21 centuries ago. The menorah lighting is symbolic of the oil found in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem following that victory. The small supply of oil burned for eight days, the time needed to consecrate new oil for the sacramental use in the holy Temple.

The eight-day nightly menorah lighting is the heart of Hanukkah, with one candle lit on the first night, two on the second night and so forth until all eight candles are lit. The festival of Hanukkah begins this year after nightfall Dec. 2,

Lincoln Logistics gains final annexation approval from council

After months of discussions about the property, Glendale City Council unanimously approved the annexation of a 17-acre parcel near Sarival Avenue and the Loop 303.

The property which had been a former dairy no longer in use, currently has four homes on the property which must be removed by January to finalize the annexation.

“This piece fits into a larger piece of development and will become part of a larger development for Lincoln Logistics,” Planning Administrator David Williams said. “They will build a building similar to the one they built in Goodyear that is a one-millionsquare-feet building.”

Williams added that the approval will complete the annexation of the area for the proposed one or two buildings in that large square footage.

“This 17 acres is along the Loop 303 near Sarival Avenue and Glendale Avenue,” Williams said. “Planning staff recommended approval of this annexation after the city brought in nearly 55 acres in March 2016 for a nearby land-bearing investment for the Sabre Business Park that was approved in 2014 that was about 109 acres.”

Williams said the land is currently zoned agricultural, but four homes on the property would also be annexed into the city limits. He said the property had a phase 1 environmental assessment and it showed no obvious contamination on the land and it was done by the property owners.

“I will say I am pleased we are exercising additional rigor on this annexation than we have been doing,” Barrel Councilmember Bart Turner said. “I am also pleased to hear a phase 1 environmental study has been done.”

As part of the Chanukah outreach campaign, Chabad of the Northwest Valley joins thousands of Chabad centers around the world that stage similar public displays of the menorah and its symbolic lights. From Australia to Africa, Columbia to Hong Kong, New York City’s Ground Zero to the “national Menorah” on The White House Elipse, where this year the vice president will be in attendance. Through these events, hundreds of thousands will experience the joy of Chanukah with Chabad.

Each guest at the menorah lighting will be entered into a grand raffle, with “Dreidels” and “Gelt” for the kids. The event will also include holiday crafts and face painting.

Glendale Glitters still sparkles in its 25th year

This year marked the 25th year Glendale Glitters has lit up downtown to create a magical holiday wonderland. This year, the city invited those who have come year after year, and those who have never been to celebrate the holiday lighting festival. The two- day event, Nov. 23 and 24, kicked off the holiday season in Glendale.

Sixteen blocks in downtown Glendale will be illuminated with 1.6 million lights to create a holiday tradition for many families year after year.

Glendale Glitters remains the state’s largest free holiday light display, and after 25 years, still offers free admission and free parking shuttles. Free shuttles were available for opening weekend from Glendale Community College at 59th and Olive avenues in the north parking lots.

Access was from 59th Avenue, north of Olive Avenue. However, the two downtown parking garages charge $10 for parking.

Upon arriving in the downtown area, visitors will find traditional festival favorites, including holiday entertainment, tasty food, seasonal gifts, all kinds of children’s activi-

Midwestern joins winners circle at Best of the West

The Best of the West Awards competition began in 1993 to recognize outstanding contributions to the image, lifestyle and economic development of the West Valley. Awards are presented in the categories of Economic Engine, Quality of Life within the Community and Education, and Excellence in Innovation. In addition to these awards, WESTMARC also presents the West Valley Regional Advancement Award, Inspiration in Leadership and President’s Choice.

West Valley Inspiration in Leadership Award Award Recipient: Herman Orcutt, Orcutt/Winslow, Retired Herman Orcutt is a highly respected architect, the owner of HZ & P Consulting and the retired founder of Orcutt I Winslow, a top ranked architecture firm he launched in 1971 and managed for 37 years. For almost four decades,

Orcutt/Winslow has been responsible for the design of many of the Valley’s health care, hospitality, senior living and educational facilities.

During his career, Orcutt also played a strong role in securing the Arizona Cardinals football stadium (State Farm Stadium) for the city of Glendale and served on the Arizona Sports & Tourism Authority Board for eight years.

Orcutt has a rich history of community activism, beginning with two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tunisia.

His hands-on approach to community activism, with a passion for supporting the West Valley has benefited this region greatly as he was part of a group that founded the Western Gateway Team, which later became WESTMARC. He also planted the seeds for Leadership West, a program created to develop upand- coming leaders in the West Valley.

Orcutt continues to dedicate his time to serving on several other professional Boards such as his most recent role as vice chairman of the Sun Health Services Board.

Character Night in downtown Catlin Court Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through the quaint Catlin Court Historic District, while enjoying the lights and the crisp night air. The cost is $25 per ride; the carriage typically holds four to six people.

Historic Downtown Glendale is home to two distinct neighborhoods; the Catlin Court District, with welcoming front lawns and porches of the historic homes, turned shops and restaurants. In Old Towne, you will always find interesting things to see and do inside the historic buildings that house independent small businesses.

A cast of characters will visit Historic Downtown Glendale beginning at 6 p.m.

Dec. 1 at the inaugural Character Night in Catlin Court. Festive and beloved characters, including Elmo, the Grinch, Minions and a snowman, will be located throughout the historic district from 6 to 8 p.m.

Santa Claus will visit Glendale Flowers and Gifts, 7145 N. 58th Drive, from 6 to 10 p.m., taking photos and Christmas wish lists. Visitors to the event are encouraged to take photos with the characters and hashtag the photo on social media, using #characternight2018. Prizes will be awarded for the best photos.

Catlin Court Character Night is an opportunity to find unique gifts to check off a holiday shopping list and enjoy delicious treats at the wide variety of restaurants, all while enjoying the beauty of Glendale

Glitters’ 1.6 million twinkling lights.

Many of the shops feature very merry holiday displays, such as Bears & More, which is decorated to look like a gingerbread house. Enjoy dozens of lighted archways adorning the decorated front lawns and leading the way to the storefronts. Attendees can also follow the “Tree Trail,” featuring festive retro-themed trees

l in front of many of the shops and eateries. Visitors can also view the Community Patriotic Tree, which honors military heroes with handmade, personalized ornaments and red, white and blue lights.

The Community Patriotic Tree is at 58th Drive and West Palmaire Avenue.

The tree will be lit nightly throughout the Glendale Glitters season.

Babbo Italian Eatery Partners with Phoenix Children’s Hospital for Holiday Toyland Drive

This holiday season, Babbo Italian Eatery and Phoenix Children’s Hospital announce a partnership for the hospital’s annual Toyland drive. The end of the year is an exciting time for all — especially children. Some kids won’t be able to go home for the holidays, but that doesn’t mean they can’t unwrap a gift.

“We are so excited to partner with a local business like Babbo Italian Eatery,” said Kim Ho, corporate development officer at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. “Toyland is an incredible event and seeing these kids’ faces every year is absolutely priceless.”

This year, Babbo donated $43,000 to support patient families and programs like Toyland. From Nov. 23 to Dec. 20, all eight Babbo Italian Eatery locations in Metro Phoenix will act as a drop-off point for the public to donate gift cards and new, unwrapped toys. “My family and I really believe in Phoenix Children’s and all that they do for the kids,” said Babbo Italian Eatery owner, Ken Pollack. “This is what the season is all about.”

On Dec. 24, Babbo employees, volunteers and staff will transform an area inside Phoenix Children’s into a magical winter Toyland. Parents of patients hospitalized over the holidays will have an opportunity to select unwrapped toys from an array of donated items — at no charge.

In addition to people being able to drop off at Babbo, Phoenix Children’s will also be accepting gift cards and new toy donations starting Dec. 8 through the 24 during a variety of hours. Only brand new toys will be accepted. No food, candy, homemade items, or toys with violent themes will be accepted.

Dignity Health teams up with Toys for Tots for holiday drive

As the holiday season nears, Dignity Health facilities across Arizona will be teaming up with Toys for Tots for a community toy drive.

Dignity Health, one of the nation’s largest health care systems, will be collecting unwrapped toys for children ages 0-12 now through Dec. 9 at 12 area locations, including 10 Dignity Health Arizona general emergency room facilities, as well as Arizona General Hospital-Laveen and the new Arizona General Hospital-Mesa.

“Thanks to the support of our local communities and conveniently located 24/7 drop-sites, Dignity Health is proud to partner with Toys for Tots,” said Jane Hanson, president and CEO of the Arizona General Hospital system. “This year, we hope to bring more joy to even more children during the holiday season who otherwise would be without.”

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program has been delivering toys to children in need since 1947 and is the largest outreach program in the Department of Defense. The program has since given out more than 548 million toys to more than 251 million children.

“The children and families that the Marine Toys for Tots Program serves are poor. In addition to hunger and shelter problems, some of these families may also struggle with mental illness, substance abuse, and family violence,” said retired Marine Col. Ted Silvester, vice president of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. “While every day is difficult for children who live in this type of environment, the holidays particularly highlight their misfortune and disadvantages. Arts & Entertainment Take a hike with Santa or be his gift-wrapping elf He’s making a list and checking it twice. That’s right. Santa Claus is coming to town. He’ll be in Glendale for two different events, in which boys and girls can get a little face time with the Big Guy. The two activities will offer children and their families a chance to get outdoors or check a box off their todo list while having some holiday fun at the same time.

The first event is the Jingle Bell Hike to Santa from 9 to 11 a.m. Dec. 8 at Thunderbird Conservation Park. Children can take part in a hands-on jingle bell craft so they can jingle their way up the trail. Parents and kids will make their way along to find Santa Claus at the end of the hike.

Water will be provided at the trailhead.

All children must be accompanied by an adult to participate in the hike. A parent or guardian must complete a waiver for minor children to participate. This is a moderate hike; trail/hiking guidelines are available at www.glendaleaz.com/ ParksandRecreation/trails/. Bring your camera to take photos with Santa. The event is free.

Thunderbird Conservation Park is north of Beardsley Road, between 67th and 55th avenues. For the hike, park in the lots on 59th (enter to the west) or 67th (enter to the east) avenues.

The second event is a fun outing to get some holiday shopping accomplished.

Head to the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, 5600 W. Union Hills Drive, from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 15.

Rolling Stones rolling into State Farm Stadium

The Rolling Stones will be touring again with a stop at State Farm Stadium in Glendale May 7, 2019.

The band, which has been together for 56 years, announced a 13-show tour, called No Filter, which kicks off April 20 in Miami. The band will perform in Jacksonville and Houston before making the stop in Glendale.

The tour will mark the band’s first tour of the U.S. since 2015’s Zip Code tour, except for one-off shows such as the Desert Trip Festival in Indio, Calif., two Las Vegas arena gigs and two private shows in 2016. In the past two years, they have only toured in Europe.

The band last released a blues cover record, Blue and Lonesome, in 2016 and has reportedly been recording new material for a possible new album next year.

The band members, Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts, have an average age of 77, with Watts being the oldest at 88 when the tour begins.

The Rolling Stones are known to tour around some of its biggest hits such as “Satisfaction,” Gimmie Shelter,” Sympathy for the Devil,” You Can’t

Always Get What You Want,” as well as dropping in newer songs in shows that average around three hours.

The band was the third-highest grossing act worldwide in the first half of 2018, according to Pollstar. The band’s $100.8 million ticket gross from European shows put them behind only Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars among the highest grossing acts.

The show in Glendale will be the first time the band played in the Valley since 2006, when it performed at University of Phoenix Stadium. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Nov. 30.

Coyotes make trade after dropping four in a row

After losing their fourth of their past five games, and being outscored 22-8 in that stretch, the Coyotes have traded two former first-round draft picks for center Nick Schmaltz from the Chicago Blackhawks.

General manager John Chayka announced the trade Nov. 25, sending forward Brendan Perlini and center Dylan Strome, to Chicago in the deal. “(Schmaltz) is a dynamic forward with top line potential,” Chayka said. “We feel he can be a core player of our team now and into the future. He’s a good complement to our evolving forward group and a rare combination of speed, skill and creativity.”

The 22-year-old Schmaltz has registered 2 goals, 9 assists for 11 points and six penalty minutes (PIM) in 23 games with the Blackhawks this season. He was a first-round draft pick of the Blackhawks in 2014 and has played in 162 games in that time and is a restricted free agent after this season.

Derek Stepan scored both goals for the Coyotes but Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced for the victory.

The Coyotes ended their five-game home stand with two losses, being outscored 11-2 in a 5-1 loss to Colorado Nov. 23 and a 6-1 loss to Calgary Nov. 25.

How some of the greatest create their greatest Constraints. Constraints. Constraints.

Constraints turn into complaints. Then complaints turn into restraints. I’ve done it. You’ve done it. We all have done this.

Some constraint we think or feel limits us and then that constraint makes us into its own image. Then we bow at its feet and complain. Hint: Idol worship like that is just idle worship. And your knees will start hurting after a few minutes, too.

Do you recognize the following complaints and restraints about outward constraints?

“I don’t have enough time to work out.” “I don’t have enough money to start a business.” “I can’t eat this food on my diet.”

Author James Clear has some great thoughts on constraints that can help us if we apply them: “So often we spend time complaining about the things that are withheld from us. But constraints are not the enemy. Every artist has a limited set of tools to work with. Every athlete has a limited set of skills to train with.

Every entrepreneur has a limited amount of resources to build with. Once you know your constraints, you can start figuring out how to work with them.”

How do you work with constraints?

In 1960, two men made a bet. There was only $50 on the line, but millions of people would feel the impact of this little wager. The first man, Bennett Cerf, was the founder of the publishing firm, Random House. The second man was named Theo Geisel, but you probably know him as Dr. Seuss. Cerf proposed the bet and challenged that Dr. Seuss would not be able to write an entertaining children’s book using only 50 different words.

Dr. Seuss took the bet and won. The result was a little book called “Green Eggs and Ham.” Since publication, “Green Eggs and Ham” has sold more than 200 million copies, making it the most popular of Seuss’s works and one of the best-selling children’s books in history.

James Clear (james@jamesclear.com) goes on to say: “At first glance, you might think this was a lucky fluke. A talented author plays a fun game with 50 words and ends up producing a hit.

“What Dr. Seuss discovered through this little bet was the power of setting constraints. Setting limits for yourself — whether that involves the time you have to work out, the money you have to

For example, ‘The Cat in the Hat’ was written using only a first-grade vocabulary list.

“I’ve noticed two reasons why this occurs. The first is constraints inspire your creativity. If you’re five feet five inches tall and you’re playing basketball, you figure out more creative ways to score than the six-feet five inches guy. If you have a 1-year-old child that takes up almost every minute of your day, you figure out more creative ways to get some exercise.

If you’re a photographer and you show up to a shoot with just one lens, then you figure out more creative ways to capture

the beauty of your subject.

“Secondly, constraints force us to get something done. This is why professionals set a schedule for their production while amateurs wait until they feel motivated.

Sticking to your schedule doesn’t have to be grand or impressive. Just commit to a process you can sustain. If you have to, reduce the scope.”

Why not appropriate these enlightening ideas today? Appropriation is the act of taking something for your own use. Don’t allow the ‘woulda, shoulda, coulda’s’ of life stop you. If it applies to you, take it.

By the way, every one of these principles is Biblically correct and spiritually accurate. Jesus did this with some fish and loaves and 12 disciples who were the island of misfit toys. Jesus gave the power of constraints a black eye. Perhaps you can, too. Limitations just determine the size of the canvas you have to work with.

What you paint on it is up to you.

Last week was Thanksgiving and I tried to get my priorities in order.

If you were told you would die next week, what would be important to you? Would it be a new car or some expensive jewelry? Would it be getting even with someone you do not like? I do not think so. Take a moment and think what would be important to you. What are your priorities?

On Nov. 22, I celebrated my 87th birthday and I am very thankful the Lord has blessed me with good health.

I have been blessed to arrive at 87 years old and I still go to work each day. As a young man, I thought 60 was old. Now that I am 87, I think 95 is old.

I retired back around 2007 and Shirley said “she married me for better or worse, not for breakfast or lunch.” So, it made her very happy when I went back to work for Maricopa County. I am planning on retiring again Feb. 1 2019.

Ask yourself what is really important to me. My priorities are first, my lovely wife, Shirley. We celebrated 63 years of marriage last month. For my daughter, Teresa, and her great husband, Pat, and for my son, Tracy, and his lovely wife, Julie. My priorities include my four grandkids: Travis and Megan, Audrey, and Brayden.

This year, Shirley and I had a special gift from God, our first greatgrandchild. Megan gave us Harper Grace Hawthorne, born June 7, 2018.

She is a beautiful baby, We are so thankful for her. My phone is full of Harper’s pictures and I show everyone who will let me tell them about her.

In the courtroom, we see all kinds of people, and people with all kinds of problems. We see people who have nothing and people who are rich in worldly possessions. We see some people who believe happiness comes in a bottle or with drugs, or some people who believe things can bring happiness. Even some people that think driving 30 miles per hour over the speed limit or squealing their tires can make them happy.

Families also come to court fighting over money and possessions.

Often, a husband and wife come to the courtroom fighting over very trivial things. Someday they will look back and realize that things do not make

OBITUARIES

Abner Elmo Sherrill

Abner Elmo Sherrill went home to be with the Lord on September 16, 2018 at the age of 75. He was an Arizona native and graduated from Glendale High School in 1961. He was a member of the carpenters union and had excellent woodworking craftsmanship. Elmo is survived by his children Dustin, Renee (Allan) and Kira (Jose); four grandchildren Sabrina, Kailen, Illiana and Jack; his sister Tippy Arnold of Mohave Valley, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents Wendell and Thelma Sherrill and his brothers, Dennis and Carl.

There will be a private memorial service held on Saturday, December 8, 2018. If anyone wishes to make a donation, the family suggests memorial donations be made to hospice at Compassus.com.

Mary Kathryn Baxla

Mary Kathryn Baxla (Kathryn) 78, passed away Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

Kathryn was born in Phoenix Arizona on December 14, 1939 to John and Myrtle Mondo. Kathryn and her twin sister Carolyn were the youngest of five girls, and were raised on a produce farm in Glendale AZ, created and expanded by John after immigrating to the United States as a young child from Pakistan.

Kathryn met Donald Robert Baxla in High School, and the two were married January 23, 1960.

Don and Kathryn raised their four children in Glendale.

They moved to Tucson in 1987 to grow their own family franchise of Peter Piper Pizza restaurants. Kathryn took a large role in running and expanding the company until 2016.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her mother and father, her three sisters Dorothy Jean Dad, Margie Connell and Helen Robinson and grandson Joshua Robert Baxla. She is survived by her husband Don, their four children John (Noel) Baxla, Joan (Robert) Roeber, Donald Jr. (Theresa) Baxla, Heather (Matt) Clauser, her 11 grandchildren Sarah (Michael), Maggie, Alecia, Katelyn, Tyler, Emily, Ava, Grant, Zachary, Dylan, Hudson, and her Great-grandchidlren, Seth and Eloise.

Those closest to her remember her generosity and intuition. She gave so much without expecting any return.

She always made sure everyone was warm, well fed, and well loved. She would often call to check in when she was worried. She became a family member to anyone, and many beyond her family knew her fondly as mom or grandma Baxla. There was always room in her home for one more.

In her absence, her family feels both grief and gratitude for the woman who loved them so well. As her family struggles with the loss of their matriarch, they are comforted by the words she read to each of them as children. "I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be."
