Holiday caution urged as virus spreads BY TOM SCANLON

With COVID-19 cases on an “extreme” upward trajectory, local and state officials are urging people to take great caution at Thanksgiving gatherings. “I know this pandemic has made 2020 tough on everyone. With the COVID-19 numbers increasing and the holiday season upon us, I would ask that everyone do their best with social distancing, wearing a mask and do what you can to keep you, your family and friends safe and healthy,” said Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers. The mayor of Glendale’s neighbor seconded that. “Our residents have made tremendous sacrifices over the last several months as

they’ve adhered to the guidelines set forth by our public health experts,” said Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat. “I have no doubt this will continue, and I hope residents safely enjoy this day of gratitude among those they love most.” In a virtual presentation, Marcy Flanagan, executive director of the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, spoke to reporters about the danger of Thanksgiving gatherings. “As we move into the holiday season we know all yearning to be with family and friends,” she said. “The safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is by not getting together in person with people outside your household.” Flanagan provided specific guidelines for

Thanksgiving gatherings. “If you do get together with people outside your household, please take as many precautions as you can. Eat outdoors and keep people from different households at least 6 feet apart. Have each household bring their own food or have one person serve food for everyone to reduce the number of people touching shared utensils. Wear masks when you are not actively eating or drinking and limit the number of guests,” she said. She stressed that while people will be tempted to get together with friends and extended family members, “We’re still in a pandemic. We need to make tough decisions in order to stay safe.” SEE HOLIDAYS PAGE 3

A road is a road is the future BY TOM SCANLON

Gertrude Stein might say, “A road is a road is a road.” But to the city of Glendale, a new stretch of Cardinals Way means opportunity, growth, money: A road is a road is the future. And, if the vision of a giant waterpark splashes down, the road also leads to fun. The city of Glendale recently celebrated a modest, mile-long stretch of pavement. The east-west arterial along the Bethany Home Road alignment “fills a gap between 83rd and 91st avenues,” according to a city press release. While some might merely shrug at a minor road, the city says Cardinals Way paves the way (so to speak) to Glendale’s future in the Sports and Entertainment District. According to Jayme Chapin of the city’s

Engineering Department, construction on the road began last November, with the city paying $2.2 million and $3.8 million from the developer. “The city was responsible for the north half and the developer was responsible for the signals, so their cost was higher,” Chapin said. “The city’s portion of the money came from development impact fees.” Speakers at a press conference announcing of the road included Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers; Nicole Bidwill, vice president of the Arizona Cardinals; and Greg Abrams, vice president of land acquisition and development for Pulte Homes of Arizona. Cardinals mascot Big Red and the Arizona Cardinals Cheerleaders joined in the cheers. While the road is another alternative to get to Cardinals games at State Farm Stadium and Coyotes games at Gila RivSEE CARDINALS WAY PAGE 4
