Glendale man advocates for transplantation BY CHRISTINA FUOCO-KARASINSKI
Glendale Star Executive Editor
Glendale resident Ed Ozier wants fellow transplant recipients to receive the same kind of support and care he did. He’s volunteering for the Saturday, Dec. 4, Donor Dash at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. It benefits the Transplant Community Alliance’s Living Assistance Fund. “This is the second year for the Donor Dash,” said Ozier, who has lived in Glendale for 50 years. “The Transplant Community Alliance raises money so they can help a lot of people, whether it’s for medication or everyday items and tasks. “I understand a few years ago, a young gal with a transplant issue had to stay
home, so the alliance bought her a computer so she could stay up with her homework. It’s really, really quite humbling, some of the things they do.” Transplant Community Alliance supports recipients through organ donation and transplantation advocacy and educates the public with events. The Startline Racing event features a 10K, 5K, 1K family fun run and doggie dash. Participants will receive a bib with a timing chip, race T-shirt, swag bag and a participant medal. Results and prizes will be presented immediately after that last finisher and will be awarded for the top three overall finishers. Additional prizes will be awarded for SEE DONOR PAGE 3

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF The Historic Catlin Court Shopping & Dining District is hosting a new holiday event series in December. The inaugural Christmas in Catlin Court will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights from Dec. 3 to Dec. 18. When area businesses learned that the city of Glendale would not be lighting the Catlin Court Historic District with holiday lights, the locally owned businesses joined together to light the trees and historic buildings to continue the 25-year tradition. The initiative was led by Coit and Valerie Burner, owners of Bears & More. The several block area will feature thou-
sands of twinkling holiday lights. Coit Burner installed the lights on more than 130 mature shade trees. Burner did the work on evenings and weekends over four weeks. The city of Glendale in partnership with Councilmember Jamie Aldama provided the use of the right-of-way electrical to power the tree lights. Visitors to Catlin Court will walk along the tree-lined streets and enjoy dozens of historic buildings, which are home to locally owned shops and restaurants. “Event attendees will enjoy a hometown holiday experience throughout the century-old National Register District,” said Valerie BurnSEE COURT PAGE 4
