After 11 months of discussions, Arizona Christian University has found a new home for its campus and it will be located in the heart of Glendale as the school takes over the former Thunderbird School of Global Management campus beginning in August 2019.

Glen Lakes closed, council delays possible re-opening

Nearly a week after a building inspector closed Glen Lakes Golf Course due to buildings being unsafe to occupy, council began the plan to possible complete closure and sale of the land.

In response to the closure, council heard an update on what the cost would be to re-open the course as soon as possible or just keep the course irrigated and manicured before a possible sale of the land.

“There are two types of temporary club houses if council would like to get the course open as soon as possible,” Director of Field Operations Michelle Woytenko said. “We would have to get a recreational vehicle for approximately 60 days which has not generated electricity and portable restrooms.”

Staff estimated the costs to get the course open as soon as possible to be at nearly $200,000 for a temporary club

house, generator for irrigation pumps, electrical hookups for the maintenance yard and shade structures.

Woytenko said staff would first have to get an RV type vehicle, which would be a temporary clubhouse, while they got a more interim construction type trailer brought to the course and permitted. The RV type trailer does not have electricity, it would be a generator, and is not Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant.

Once the interim construction type trailer is brought in, it would be wired for electricity, water, sewer and data connections after being permitted by the state — and would be ADA compliant.

Staff estimates the added costs on the course to get through the end of the fiscal year would be nearly $430,000, which includes the trailers, electrical hookups, generator and fuel, among other needed items to get the course open as soon as possible.

“Look, the city has not invested capital in anything for a while,” Vice Mayor Lauren Tolmachoff said. “We just finished repairing a fire station that has had sewer and other problems. Has the city neglected Glen Lakes, yes, but we have not invested capital in any parks, fire or police stations, so the argument that Glen Lakes was neglected while other areas have gotten capital is not true.”

Tolmachoff said sometimes councilmembers have to make difficult decisions.

“I have had lots of calls from citizens who want money to be spent on parks in other parts of the city,” Tolmachoff said.

“Sometimes you have to extract emotions from decision and I just believe it is not a good fiscal decision to invest taxpayers’ funds for this.”

Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign begins

The annual Red Kettle Campaign began Nov. 16 as Vice Mayor Lauren Tolmachoff kicked off the event at Cabela’s at Westgate.

“I am happy to be here and this is a very important event this morning,” Tolmachoff said. “As a citizen of Glendale, I am very familiar with the Red Kettle at 49 locations throughout the community.”

A small crowd sang carols and listened as the Salvation Army of Glendale began its annual drive with the hope of raising over $152,000 during the holidays.

“The Red Kettle kickoff is a special time for the Salvation Army because we are well known throughout the community for giving out food baskets, clothes, toys and any needed assistance we can to those in need,” Glendale Salvation Army Maj. Clement Leslie said. “The Red Kettles help fund our programs all year round and our goal is to beat last year when we raised $150,000 in Glendale.”

The Red Kettle began in 1891 when Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee wanted to help people in need in San Francisco. He resolved to prepare Christmas dinner for the destitute and poverty-stricken and he placed a large, iron kettle where people could toss a coin or two to help the poor.

Suspect killed after leading police on Valley-wide chase

A suspect who led police on a pursuit from Phoenix into Glendale was shot and killed after he pointed a gun at officers Nov. 13 in Glendale.

No officers or civilians were injured

in the shooting.

At approximately 2:40 p.m. Nov. 13, officers responded to a call of an armed robbery of an undisclosed business near Thomas Road and 32nd Street in Phoenix.

suspect leaving the scene in a vehicle.

Officers followed the suspect across the area, ending near Maryland and 67th avenues, where, eventually, the shooting occurred.

The suspect, identified as 24-yearold Timothy Odell Leon, was identified by police as the suspect in at least five armed robberies in the past week.

Police said he crashed his vehicle near Maryland and 67th and the car came to rest under a parking structure.

Police said as Leon attempted to flee armed with a handgun, he did not comply with the officers’ commands. After the vehicle had crashed, three of the tactical officers from the Phoenix Police

Department, fearing for their lives and those of the community, responded with lethal force after Leon pointed his gun at the officers, police said.

No officers or citizens were harmed during this incident. Leon succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.

The incident marked the 40th shooting involving the Phoenix Police Department in 2018, and the 72nd involving a law enforcement agency in Maricopa County since January.

Glendale police assumed the investigation around 4 p.m. after the shooting and the incident is still under investigation.

Man wants to join the force that saved his life

During a normal traffic investigation April 12, little did Glendale Police Officer Gilberto Comparan know he would be saving a man’s life with the help of life saving kits provided by the department.

Alex Yanez, a restoration technician who refurbishes and demolishes houses, noticed a mirror was near falling off the wall and went to get his hammer to break it up when the mirror fell and he put his arm up to block it.

As he raised his arm to cover his face, flying glass broke free and cut his left forearm and hit an artery. His co-worker put him in the van and the two began driving to the hospital.

A simple wrong turn changed things and when they saw an accident, the coworker drove up to Comparan, honking his horn to get the police officer’s attention.

“Hearing the horns, I was just think-

ing, ‘Get prepared for whatever this may be,’” Comparan said. “My first thought as always was being safe, then figure out what was needed from this vehicle that was honking wildly.”

As he walked over to the van, Comparan saw blood everywhere and he quickly jumped into action, grabbed the wound and attempted to slow the bleeding.

“There was a lot of blood and he was white and shaking, which is a bad sign and means he was going into shock,” Comparan said. “I saw the white towel they had was covered in blood and I just tried to put pressure on the wound to slow the bleeding.”

As he tried to slow the blood, fellow Glendale Officer Chris Massey, who just happened to be nearby on a different traffic stop, came up and grabbed a trauma kit that all Glendale officers carry in their vehicles since the 2011 death of Officer Bradley Jones.

officer to a meeting when the convict they were supposed to see shot Jones in the chest and stole his patrol car. Fellow officers and eventually fire crews tried treating Jones, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

“In public safety, we have to always be prepared to do deal with life-and-death situations as they come up and you don’t always know what those situations are going to look like,” Police Chief Rick St. John said. “These kits are integral to assisting our officers in situations exactly like this.”

Massey grabbed the kit from the vehicle and the two officers applied the tourniquet to Yanez’s arm, slowing the blood flow until Glendale Fire Depart-

ment Capt. Matt Graner and firefighter TC Lee arrived roughly eight minutes after the incident began.

“From the time (Yanez) pulled up in the van until we got the tourniquet on his arm, we are talking maybe two minutes, tops,” Comparan said. “To know we have the collective effort from our training, staff to the authorized purchase of these kits means that we can make a difference between life and death.”

On Nov. 13, Yanez, met with the men who saved his life for the first time since the accident. He was emotional when asked what it meant to be together again. see

LIFESAVING FROM 6 “They just didn’t see me as some person,” Yanez said. “They saw me as a friend, a father and somebody trying to make a living. The way they acted was just incredible and I cannot put into words what they did for me.”

Nearly eight months since the accident, Yanez has made a full recovery and he has regained full use of his arm after months of therapy and has returned to work.

“It is just an amazing feeling to know that these guys jumped in to help me without even thinking,” Yanez said. “They will always be my guardian angels and they gave me more time to be with my family and children.”

Yanez has since returned to school

and has a new goal for his newfound life.

“I really would like to be a police officer,” Yanez said. “These men, the way they stepped up and helped me, that is what I want to do and they are the reason I want to do better things in the world.”

As Comparan and Yanez were talking after the officers were recognized for their quick actions, they both said they have a special connection.

“These guys will always hold a special place in my heart,” Yanez said. “They gave me a second chance at life.”

Comparan echoed that statement, “I am really glad to see he is doing well and it is a great feeling to know he is living life.”

HANDS FREE FROM 1 “We are modeling our ordinance after Surprise’s ordinance because it is the most recent and most comprehensive,” Glendale Police Chief Rick St. John said.

The proposed law would be a primary offense, meaning police can pull over a driver if they suspect the driver is violating the law, even if the driver isn’t breaking any other driving laws.

Public-safety personnel operating in their professional capacity are exempt.

“Even though my officers would be exempt, I tell them all the time that if they need to look on their phones or the computers in the vehicle, they need to pull to the side of the road,” St. John said.

Arizona does have a hands-free law, but it is minimal, which prohibits bad drivers and novice drivers under the age of 18 to use handheld devices while driving.

“We do not believe that the state law is restrictive enough and there are many other cities and towns that have already enacted an ordinance,” St. John said.

“It would make using your handheld device a primary offense, which means officers can pull drivers over for using a handheld device and they do not need another offense to pull drivers over.”

Other cities in Arizona have passed more restrictive laws, including Surprise, Phoenix, Tucson and Oro Valley, as well as Pima and Coconino counties.

St. John said the fine would be up to $250 for the first offense, but would have a grace period if the law is approved.

“I would anticipate most of our contact with drivers over the first month or two would be warning to let drivers know that the law exists,” St. John said.

“We would also have an ad campaign to get the word out that the law would be beginning.”

City Council was strongly in favor of the law, saying the time had come.

“This is long overdue as far as I am concerned,” Yucca District Councilmember Joyce Clark said. “Distracted driving is only going to increase and unless we make efforts to stop it, we will see more accidents on the roads.”

The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes each year with nearly 390,000 injuries occurring from accidents caused by texting and driving.

“I looked at the National Safety Council, which states that 3,916 teens will die this year while texting and driving and that alone makes me believe that we should ban texting and driving,” Cactus Councilmember Ian Hugh said.

City Council gave consensus for St. John to continue moving forward to review and create an ordinance based on the Surprise ordinance which will come back to council at a future meeting for a vote.

ACU will take over the 68-acre campus of the former Thunderbird school and bring in its current 800 students and 200 faculty in August next year.

Munsil said ACU has been evaluating options for a new campus that would provide its students and faculty with improved academic and sports facilities and additional space for classrooms and on-campus housing.

“It is nine miles from our current campus in a tremendous community and for us give us the opportunity to grow,” Munsil said. “With our growing athletics and performing arts programs, we now have the chance to continue to grow both of them.”

He added that the current ACU campus, as well as dorms, has been at capacity for two years as the school continues to be one of the top colleges

in the U.S. News and World Report annual rankings.

“We been thrilled to be recognized as a ‘Best College’ by U.S. News & World Report for two consecutive years,” Munsil said. “It has been a great indicator that we are building a national reputation for excellence.”

ACU is ranked among the Best Regional Colleges in the West, and is the only ranked Arizona school in this category. The category covers colleges and universities from 15 western states, including California, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington and Oregon. Schools were ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence. When ASU moved Thunderbird School of Global Management to downtown Phoenix last year, residents questioned the viability of getting another school onto the site and Munsil said this was key to the deal.

Nov. 14 announcement The school bused in eight loads of students to a presentation Nov. 14 officially announcing the school’s move to Glendale with more than 100 students cheering and clapping as Munsil made the move official.

“As you know, we are here today to announce the completion of a land exchange agreement with ASU and the Thunderbird School of Global Management that is truly an example of a win, win, win transaction,” Munsil said.

“Next fall in 2019, ACU will move to this campus for all of its transactions.”

For the past several months, ACU has been working with ASU on a land exchange agreement, which involves the exchange of the current 20-acre campus at Cactus Road and 25th Street for nearly 69 acres at Greenway Road and 59th Avenue.

“ACU has been landlocked and at capacity for parking and dorms at our

current location,” Munsil said. “Now we will have sufficient space for athletics and performing arts expansion as well as more classrooms and administration space with plenty of room to grow.”

The former campus had 140,000 square feet of building space while the new campus will have more than 500,000 square feet. ACU also adds a 1,000-seat event center, which the current campus does not have, and more than 1,100 parking spaces.

“I could not be more excited to have Arizona Christian University relocating to Glendale and repurposing this historic property,” Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers said. “This announcement is quite simply an answer to my prayers.”

Weiers said the city had been discussing the property with ASU once they announced they would be moving the Thunderbird school to downtown Phoenix last year.

“When ASU announced they would be moving, I was in shock that Thunderbird would be moving, but respected the decision,” Weiers said. “We began working on a new vision for this campus that has been vital to Glendale for over see

growth,” Malnar said. “The shopping center is sure to gain businesses with nearly 1,000 people expected to start at this campus next fall.”

Weiers also pointed to the economic expansion within the city limits.

“This is a massive shot in the arm for this area, not just economically, but these students are required to do community service, which is an amazing opportunity in the city,” Weiers said. “I have tried to find a negative with this deal and I just cannot find a negative at all.”

“Specifically for the (Sahuaro) district, the people were so concerned about what was going to happen to this historic campus,” Malnar said. “I have gotten calls from citizens, alumni and former staff telling me you cannot tear down this campus.”

Expansion and athletics Munsil added that ACU is planning to grow and now they will have the space to build facilities for their teams.

“Our timetable is to begin construction as soon as we can build them,” Munsil said. “We would like to have some ready by next fall.”

He added that the plan was to build them along 59th Avenue on the west side of the campus.

tion of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), participating in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) and will have a natural rival in Ottawa University in Surprise.

“We look forward to building our facilities and having a great experience for our fans that want to watch our teams grow,” Munsil said.

Plans showcased at the announcement have the school building a football stadium, baseball, softball and soccer fields at the new location.

Munsil added that come next fall, they expect to have in place and operating on campus a turf field for soccer and football practices and games, baseball and softball fields and sand volleyball courts.

Expansion plans in the near future also include a football stadium for football and track, as well as a tennis complex.

ACU is a private, non-profit, Christian university with a wide variety of majors and areas of study preparing students for successful careers.

GLEN LAKES FROM 2 October workshop, an inspection of the clubhouse and maintenance building with members of the community, the Glen Lakes Golf Course was closed Nov. 7 because the buildings are unsafe to occupy.

Inspections of the buildings in July showcased “several deficiencies were cited which initially were classified as incipient hazards,” and after council gave the course 90 days to review what was needed to possibly keep the city owned course.

On Nov. 1, Glendale Building Inspector Stephen Dudley inspected the building with city staff and members of the community, in which he found that “due to continuing deterioration, the Building Safety Division has declared the buildings to be imminently unsafe.”

Assistant City Manager Tom Duensing said during the Nov. 13 City Council workshop, staff was going to seek direction on what to do with the golf course.

“We are going to review everything with council but what we are focused on is we have a short -term issue, we had to shut down a golf course,” Duensing said.

“We will review the notice of violation and discuss with council two things — the club house and maintenance facility.”

Among the issues pointed out during the inspection by Dudley in the Nov. 7 letter to City Manager Kevin Phelps and councilmembers were: • Inside the clubhouse building, the raised seating area was unstable • Significant water damage to drywall ceilings throughout the structure • Men’s restroom ceiling is in danger of collapse • Electrical equipment has not been properly installed, including the installation of wiring, light fixtures, time clocks, controllers, light switches, receptacles and appliances.

• Electrical work is not grounded properly or has been installed improperly • Electrical equipment inside the building has been subject to water damage due to the leaking roof • All cords routed through walls and ceilings must be removed

• Electrical service equipment in the maintenance building is in disrepair and represents a shock and fire hazard • Improperly installed electrical equipment and wiring methods that are unsafe in maintenance building • Electrical conductors routed on the chain link fence that are not protected Dudley said the list of 24 issues found during the review were not the “complete list of deficiencies.”

“One of the issues was the irrigation system’s electrical power goes through the building and during the review they turned off the breaker to check it and it did not come back on,” Assistant City Manager Chris Anaradian said. “If you turn off the breakers at your home, you assume it would come back on and it wouldn’t.”

Staff told council during the Oct. 23 workshop presentation, it was stated an estimated cost to improving Glen Lakes was between $5.1 million and $7.6 million.

Among the issues that need repair include between $2.1 million and $2.9 million to rebuild the pro shop and clubhouse, $800,000 and $1 million for irrigation system, and $750,000 and $1 million for a new maintenance facility.

Duensing said they would be seeking council direction on what to do next with Glen Lakes.

“If they want us to open the course, we believe we could bring out a temporary trailer and generator for the irrigation and have it open by (Nov. 17

to 18),” Duensing said. “If council does not give direction to reopen, we would have to come back with how we begin decommission of the course.”

All costs would be included in the Oct. 23 estimates in getting the course back up to par, but the irrigation system electrical wiring would add to the costs.

“The majority of costs would be included in the earlier estimates except the irrigation wiring,” Duensing said. “We had no idea (in October) we would be incurring the maintenance facility and irrigation costs to the pump because it was not even on our radar screen, so that would be additional costs.”

No matter the decision Nov. 13, the city would incur costs, including the irrigation system if council decided against reopening the course.

“Either decision from council, we will have to hard wire the irrigation system and we would want to keep it green,” Anaradian said. “If council decides to keep the course closed, we will look at securing the site and worrying about the equipment out there to keep it safe and green.”

Council will hear an update on what it would cost to keep the course green, with the golf course closed, and what they could offset from the course being re-opened during the Nov. 27 workshop with a possible final vote at the regular council meeting later that night.

GUHSD Governing Board honors Apollo achievers

The Glendale Union High School District’s annual Achievement Above All event celebrates a handful of individuals from each school that exhibit outstanding leadership and exceptional accomplishments. One teacher, student, student group, support staff member and volunteer are honored for their ongoing commitment to the district and school’s community. This time, Apollo High School achievers were recognized by the GUHSD Governing Board at its regular meeting on Nov. 7.

Teacher of the Year was awarded to Frank Coloma. He currently serves as a culinary teacher and has taught at Apollo for the past six years.

Before landing in his role at Apollo, Coloma served five years in the military and even attended nursing school. However, it wasn’t until he enrolled in a culinary program, received a culinary degree and began teaching classes when he realized

his true passion.

In 2010, Coloma started teaching adult culinary classes at Scottsdale Company, Sur La Table and realized his true calling — teaching, Apollo Principal Brooke Parsons said.

Coloma explained that his passion for teaching culinary arts comes from emphasizing how significant food is in today’s world.

“I am most passionate about teaching life skills/employability skills and real expectations of what life after high school is,” he said. “I am proud of what my students can accomplish after a year of taking culinary arts and I always express how important food is and how it’s universal.”

Samantha Watson earned this school year’s Student of the Year award. As a highly involved and academically highperforming student, Samantha has made an impact in the Hawk community.

“Currently, Samantha has a weighted GPA of 4.3. In her junior and senior year combined, she has taken seven AP classes,”

Parsons said. “Not only does Samantha excel academically, but she excels in choir, theatre, best buddies, color guard and swim, to name a few.”

Her teachers, swim coaches and mother are her biggest supporters.

“Sammy is an awesome kid with a great heart. She works hard every day, not only doing her best on her own work, but her best to help others as well,” her AP Calculus teacher said.

Parsons said Samantha is filled with ambition and will continue to achieve success after graduation.

“You have a selfless determination to help others and have been a delight to work with,” Parsons said. “We are proud of you and look forward to seeing all of the great things that you accomplish upon graduation.”

Choir, sponsored by Gabriel Frongillo, was honored as Apollo’s Student Group of

the Year. The purpose of choir is to better the Hawk community through musical excellence, student leadership and concerts.

Another GUHSD choir director shares that the Apollo Choir program has grown tremendously over the past five years and has a group of outstanding performers.

“Apollo Choir members are solid performers who don’t just sing notes on a page, but make the music come to life with dynamics, body language, interpretation and so much more,” Greenway Choir Director JJ Rafferty said.

Apollo Choir credits their director for their improvement and solid performances, Parsons said. “They expressed that Mr. Frongillo is enthusiastic, professional, kind, cares about them and helps them grow vocally,” she said. see

APOLLO FROM 12 Frongillo said choir’s future goals are to increase community outreach through musical excellence, tour across the country and to bring vocal music in to the school community.

The Support Staff of the Year award went to long-time employee, Paula Perez.

She has held several positions at Apollo before finally landing in her current position.

Her employment with Apollo began 13 years ago as a part-time cafeteria worker and within six months she became the head cook. The following year, she was promoted to student coordinator lead. Now, she is currently serving as the cafeteria manager, a role she took on in 2014.

According to Parsons, Perez is a topnotch employee.

“Paula has great work ethic and is concerned about every detail of the cafeteria at all times. She is a true definition of a leader and we can’t thank her enough for her commitment to Apollo High School,” Parsons said.

When Perez is not serving kids food in the school cafeteria, she can be found supporting the community and school.

She attends several events during the school year and has volunteered with the booster club for the past 10 years to help support Apollo clubs and sports.

Achievement Above All Volunteer Recipients: Ryan and Allison Livingstone were named Apollo’s two Volunteer of the Year recipients.

“Ryan and Allison Livingstone are the ideal parents. They actively participate in their children’s education and contribute to the Apollo community,” Parsons said.

Dictionaries find appreciative audience Third-graders express enthusiasm over paper-bound information book

In this day and age of super-technology, it was a welcome site to see: Third-grade students at Sahuaro Ranch Elementary School becoming excited about receiving their own personal dictionaries, compliments of Peoria Rotary Club. The dictionaries were delivered Nov. 8 to the students at the school.

For more than a decade, members of the Peoria Rotary Club have been delivering dictionaries to third-graders in Peoria Unified School District.

It is not just a dictionary filled with spellings and definitions of words.

It contains the longest word in the English language — almost 2,000 characters — that defies pronunciation by the lay person. It is defined as a chemical compound containing more than 250 amino acids.

Students aim high to reach their goals

Every month during the school year, Glendale Rotary Club honors three students, one each from Apollo, Glendale and Independence high schools.

During the month, the students are treated to lunch each week during the regular noon Thursday meeting of Glendale Rotary.

At the last meeting, they are introduced once more and presented with a plaque to signify their selection as Students of the Month.

The month of November, the club honored Apollo student David Ordaz, Glendale student Jonathan Osorio and Independence student Analy Granados.

David has a 3.9 grade point average and is president of Apollo’s National

Honor Society. He plans to attend the University of California — Irvine and major in mechanical engineering. At Apollo, he plays clarinet in the school band, and said he plans to continue playing the instrument after graduation.

Once his studies at the university

are completed, David said he wants to use his engineering degree and seek a position that will allow him to modify or create new parts for cars and planes to make them more efficient. He is on the cross country team and in the classroom, is taking AP calculus and physics.

Jonathan has a 3.9 GPA and is the

top student in his class at Glendale High. He is a member of NHS, Coding Club and Gaming Club. He is taking five AP classes, including physics and Part 2 calculus. His hobbies are surfing the internet and video games. He has not made a deicsion about his college choice.

Analy has a 3.8 GPA and takes AP classes, is a member of NHS and the Speech and Debate Club and vice president of the Social Studies Club. She is captain of the Independence cheer team and also participates in the dance company.

She plans to attend Arizona State University to study political science and pursue a career as a corporate lawyer.

ACE Comic Con returning to Gila River Arena

After a successful debut at Gila River Arena in January, ACE Comic Con will return to the arena Jan. 11-13, 2019 with a new lineup of celebrity guests.

Actor Tom Hiddleston, known for his portrayal of Loki in Thor and The Avengers movies; David Tennant, of Doctor Who; Krysten Ritter, of Netflix’s Jessica Jones, and Daredevil Charlie Cox have been tapped to appear at the second Arizona ACEComic Con. ACE Comic Con Arizona is a division of ACE Universe, a newly launched experiential events company created by brothers Gareb and Stephen Shamus.

Small Business Saturday continues to be an annual holiday shopping tradition — just one part of the larger shop small movement to support small businesses every day and everywhere.

Traditionally held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Historic Downtown Glendale’s shops and restaurants will celebrate Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24, starting at 10 a.m.

Small Business Saturday is the perfect opportunity to shop for unique holiday gifts, enjoy a leisurely lunch with family and friends, all while supporting locally owned businesses.

Event attendees are encouraged to start their day at the Portable Information Booth fondly nicknamed “Mrs. PIB.” The booth will be located at the corner

of 58th Drive and Palmaire Avenue from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Knowledgeable downtown docents will welcome visitors to the event and provide walking maps and downtown shopping and dining information.

Curtis resigns as Ironwood head football coach

After the first winning season in five years, Ironwood is looking for a new head football coach.

Ian Curtis, who just completed his eighth season as head coach of the Eagles, resigned after just missing the playoffs this season.

“It’s just time,” Curtis said. “I just believe it is time and I will miss the connections that are formed with studentathletes and the camaraderie between all my coaches.”

Curtis compiled a 36-55 (.395) record over nine seasons with one playoff game in 2011 a first round loss to Deer Valley.

After a 2-8 season in 2017, Ironwood had high hopes this season with a strong senior class and tremendous transfers joining the Eagles, to which Curtis pointed to.

“There is no doubt in my mind that now is the proper time to step away, for it is appropriate to allow the younger generation of coaches to guide the ship.

This decision is not easy, but it is what is right for me and for the program,” Curtis said. “I have been privileged to coach at Ironwood High School and Liberty High School. These great institutions allowed me to be part of their programs and work with an immense array of special people. To the coaches, athletic trainers, maintenance staff, athletic directors, and many others with whom I have worked, it has been my pleasure to stand alongside you as teammates working toward a shared vision.

Thanksgiving: When you drink from the well, remember the spring Well, here we go again, it’s holiday time. In North America, we start with Thanksgiving, then comes Christmas, and finishing with New Year’s events.

Notice the order of the holidays; it’s thanks first and giving second.

Thanksgiving, to be truly Thanksgiving, is first thanks, then comes the giving of Christmas.

However, Thanksgiving was never meant to be shut up in a single day.

There are many things we could note about thanksgiving. For example, Thanksgiving is when one species ceases to “gobble� and another begins. Here’s something for which you should be abundantly thankful — only you and God have all the facts about yourself. If you can’t pay your bills, you can be thankful you’re not one of your creditors.

We ought to be thankful we are living in a country where folks can say what they think without thinking.

A person doesn’t realize how much he has to be thankful for until he has to

pay taxes on it. Finally, here’s another Thanksgiving tip: Why not be thankful for some of the things you don’t have?

Matthew Henry, the famous scholar, was once accosted by thieves and robbed. He wrote about the incident: “Let me be thankful first, because I was never robbed before; second, because, although they took my purse, they did not take my life; third, because, although they took my all, it was not too much; and fourth, because it was I who was robbed, not I who robbed.�

Great thoughts there and a great perspective. When you think like that, you don’t spend a bunch of emotional energy on bitterness and revenge.

Fulton Sheen wrote something concerning the consequences of ingratitude in children: “A very interesting phenomenon in children is that gratitude or thankfulness comes relatively late in their young lives. They almost have to be taught thankfulness; if not,

In other words, if we aren’t thankful for what we have, we aren’t very likely to be thankful for what we are going to get.

Someone once said, “The truth is attitudes sour in the life that is closed to thankfulness. Soon selfish attitudes take over, closing life to better things.�

So, what is Thanksgiving?

Neil Strait says, “Thanksgiving is the attitude of the life that acknowledges the contribution from God, from others and from life. Thanksgiving puts power into living, because it opens up the generators of the heart to

respond gratefully, to receive joyfully, and to react creatively.�

Let me conclude with what Richard Douglas says: “The modern person seldom pauses to give thanks for the simple blessings of life. One reason is because we are used to having so much. We simply assume that we will have all the good things of life. Another reason is that it hurts our pride to be grateful. We do not want to admit that God is the provider of all good things.

We are simply His stewards. Being thankful requires humility and faith in God. When we have these, we can be grateful.�

Arizona Coyotes relocaton rumors resurface Oh boy, not again.

As reports began leaking out that Andrew Barroway was discussing a possible sale of the Arizona Coyotes, questions again began to surface about the team leaving Gila River Arena, as well as Arizona.

Wake me when this story STOPS raising its head in this state.

I know, many of you are saying that I have been one of the most critical people about this organization and have reported numerous rumors of them leaving Glendale for the past seven years. But, even I am tired of reporting this story.

When Barroway joined the ownership group, he showed how much he loves hockey and he was one of the most excited people I have seen when he became sole owner in 2017.

On the ice, the Coyotes are one of the most exciting teams in the National Hockey League early this year, as they have started the season 9-8-1.

The team ranks 14th in the NHL in shots per game and six different players have eight points on the young season.

Clayton Keller (5 goals, 7 assists) and Oliver Ekman-Larsson (2, 10) lead the team with 12 points.

Michael Grabner (5 G,5 A), Vinnie Hinostroza (4 G, 5 A), Derek Stepan (4 G, 4 A) and Alex Galchenyuk (3 G, 5 A) lead a young team that is exciting to watch.

But when it comes to off-the ice, this team may be the all-time leader in stories that have nothing to do with the players on the ice.

In a story on thefourthperiod.com, it was reported that “As part of the expected sale of the Coyotes, the plan would be to keep the franchise in the Phoenix area, though it’s not believed to be contingent on a new arena deal.�

But those reports of remaining in Arizona were about as short as a trip to Houston. The stories of possible relocation have raised their ugly heads with reports that the team may be headed out of Arizona.

Houston, which has a new arena open and ready to host a team, Ottawa, Oklahoma City and Kansas City have all expressed interest in getting an NHL team.

In early December, the NHL Board of Governors will meet and the sale could be voted on as well as discussion of the expected expansion franchise that is going to be awarded to Seattle.

Barroway has been the best of those three owners, even if on the ice the team has struggled to follow his lead.

Every owner in that time has said the same thing, this team needs a new arena, but I have always asked why.

Gila River Arena is a very nice arena, one of the better arenas I have reported from, even though it is 15 years old.

They announced a deal with Arizona State University in 2016, during which the press conference, nobody noticed that there was no representative from the school present. That deal fell through and crashed loudly.

Then there were rumors of Tucson, Tempe, Scottsdale and Phoenix, but nothing has come to fruition, maybe because taxpayers have said loud and clear they do not want public funds for professional sports arenas. Especially when the Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks are crying that they both need new stadiums.

Barroway had high hopes when he took over, as did other owners and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, but the numbers do not lie as home attendance has been stagnant for years.

SECTION 1. That the Zoning Ordinance of the City of Glendale, Arizona, Article 6 (Overlay District Regulations) amended by adding a Section 6.950 to read as follows: Section 6.950 Sonorita Community Overlay District. SO 6.951 Intent and Applicabili A. Intent. It is the intent of the Sonorita Community Overlay District to acknowledge the historical residential use in the area, promote the continuance and limited expansion of single-family residential uses by encouraging the maintenance and improvement of the residential environment, protecting and improving the vitality of the community. The Overlay District encourages continued residential uses in the community.

It is also the intent to facilitate single-family residential redevelopment in the Sonorita community. The Sonorita Community Overlay District will facilitate a development review process which encourages redevelopment and residential additions; will employ strategies to balance the protection of the existing community with new development; provides flexibility to implement unique development standards in the community; allows certain land uses to support investment and opportunity.

It is the intent of the Sonorita Community Overlay District to permit residential uses and establish residential development standards in addition to the existing permitted uses and development standards within the existing zoning district.

The Sonorita Community Overlay District does not hinder a property ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to utilize existing zoning.

B. Applicability. The Sonorita Community Overlay District shall apply only to the geographic area bounded by Grand Avenue on the north and east, Maryland Avenue on the south, and 59th Avenue on the west.

6.952 Boundaries.

The Sonorita Community Overlay District is bounded by Grand Avenue on the north and east, Maryland Avenue on the south, and 59th Avenue on the west which is zoned M-1 (Light Industrial).

6.953 Existing Zoning.

The existing zoning in the Sonorita Community Overlay District is M-1 (Light Industrial, Sec. 5.840). The Sonorita Community Overlay District affirms that existing zoning and in no way limits a property owner from utilizing the uses and standards associated with the M-1 District.

6.954 Permitted uses.

A. An existing detached single-family home which is the only dwelling unit on the lot, parcel, or parcels it is constructed on.

6.955 Uses Subject to Conditions for Single-Family Homes.

A. Adult Care Homes, Juvenile Group Care Homes and Group Homes for the disabled, subject to administrative review as described in Sections 7.501 and 7.502.

B. Home Occupations (Class I): See Section 7.304.

6.956 Accessory Uses for Single-Family Homes.

Uses which are customary and incidental to the principal use of the property.

All accessory uses are subject to Section 7.300.
