Abrazo Arrowhead named a top regional hospital

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Abrazo Arrowhead Campus has been recognized as a top regional hospital in the 2021-22 U.S. News Best Hospitals, ranked as “High Performing” in seven adult procedures and conditions.

Abrazo Arrowhead Campus received High Performing rankings for treating the following adult procedures and conditions: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, pneumonia and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).

The rankings placed Abrazo Arrowhead Campus in the top 10 for both metro Phoenix (No. 6) and the state of Arizona (No. 7). US News’ evaluation of Abrazo Ar-

rowhead Campus also includes data from Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital, a satellite of the Arrowhead Campus.

Martinez did his best to represent the citizens of Glendale by carefully reviewing issues brought to his attention and voting accordingly. Martinez, along with his staff, were key to bringing the Coyotes, Cardinals and Westgate to life.

Although Martinez was busy serving others, he found time to travel with his family to places like San Francisco, Mexico, Germany, Switzerland, England, Italy and China. Martinez never let his age get the best of him. At age 81, he hiked the Great Wall of China with friends and family.

Martinez was predeceased by his father, mother and three younger brothers. He is survived by his wife; his four children, Helen Mendez, Cecilia Jasso, David Martinez and Manuel Martinez Jr.; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchil-

Woman fighting for husband’s release from Mexican jail

A Glendale man has been sitting in Mexican federal prison since he mistakenly brought a gun into the country on July 30.

Ira Beavers, who was traveling with his wife and three children, was initially pulled over near the Lukeville Port of Entry for speeding.

Police searched their car and found Beavers’ gun, and the man was arrested for possession of a firearm. It is considered a federal offense in Mexico to have a gun that isn’t authorized by Mexican officials.

“We didn’t see the signs (referring to the no-gun policy) going into the border,” said Francine Nicholson, Beavers’ wife. “I’ve been down to Sonoita since this arrest, and I did see the signs that time.”

Nicholson describes the moment during and after her husband was detained.

“From my perspective, there are just

so many different levels of anguish and shock,” she said.

“First of all, the anticipation of going on vacation, then being stopped and searched. It was the initial shock of not making it to our destination. We take for granted that when we visit a country outside of the United States, we basically give up our rights.”

Nicholson can only talk to her husband twice a week on Saturdays and Mondays for 10 minutes.

“Imagine speaking to your spouse or speaking to your loved one multiple times a day — when they get to work or while they’re eating lunch — but now you have to wait,” Nicholson said.

“I’m literally glued to my phone on those two days. I have to make sure my battery is fully charged. I have to make sure I’m in a quiet place, so I don’t miss anything, and I have to give him updates for his attorney.”

Nicholson said, in prison, Beavers is receiving three meals a day.

“My husband’s a big guy,” he said. “He weighed approximately 270 to 280 pounds before getting detained. He’s lost about 25 pounds since he’s been there.”

Nicholson attempted to visit her husband, but it’s been difficult.

“There are lots of forms that need to be filled out,” she said.

“I have to have both of our birth certificates, my passport, utility bills with both of our names on it, three personal reference letters. Two dead in Glendale Suspect shot after confrontation with police collision, police investigating

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF A man was shot Nov. 3 after allegedly hitting a police vehicle and making aggressive movements toward an officer.

Glendale police said the suspect, 26-year-old Jose Enrique Cortez, died from his injuries.

According to the Glendale Police Department, officers responded just after midnight to a call saying a man was in the road yelling and banging on vehicles near 62nd Avenue and McLellan Road.

An officer reportedly found Cortez standing next to a vehicle in the middle of the street. Police said Cortez got into the vehicle and started to drive in the officer’s direction, before swerving and sideswiping the officer’s fully marked patrol vehicle.

The suspect continued driving away and was found by another officer. Cortez stopped on Ocotillo Road just east of 62nd Avenue, where police said he got out of the vehicle, yelled at the officer and waved his arms before fleeing on foot.

Officers again found Cortez in front of a home on 62nd Avenue. A confrontation occurred between an officer and Cortez, who police said yelled, “Shoot me.”

Cortez is alleged to have aggressively moved toward the officer, leading a second officer to ineffectively deploy a Taser. Police said Cortez then charged at the first officer while blading his left

side forward and making furtive movements to the small of his back as if he had a gun in his rear waistband. Taking this as a threat, the second officer fired his weapon and struck Cortez, according to police.

Cortez was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No weapon was found. Cortez had an outstanding felony warrant for a parole violation stemming from a kidnapping charge.

The officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in this situation. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF Glendale police are investigating after two teens died in a three-vehicle collision near the 7000 block of West Bell Road Oct. 30.

Police have identified Joseph Daniel Saiz, 19, and Elana Keltner Crawford, 18, as those who were killed.

Officers responded just after 8:30 p.m., according to the department. The initial investigation shows Saiz was driving a Ford Mustang eastbound on Bell Road with passenger Crawford in the car. Witnesses reported Saiz was driving at a high rate of speed without headlights on.

Meanwhile, a Honda Civic with one occupant was traveling westbound on Bell Road and turned left at Grandview Road, hitting the back of the Mustang, police continued. That collision caused the Mustang to hit the median, where it collided into two trees.

After striking the trees, it continued onto the westbound lane, where it collided with a Lexus ES300 occupied by one person.

Saiz, who was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, died on scene. Crawford was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Lexus was transported to a local hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. The driver of the Civic was not injured.

Becoming homeless for many, if not most, can be as simple as a job loss plus a major unexpected bill. When people need food and shelter, their need is often obvious. Legal problems can be just as significant — but are often hidden. Thankfully, there are some resources available.

A place to start is the Arizona Justice Center, which advocates for the homeless and for the working poor. Its services include free legal counseling, marriage and family counseling, addiction counseling, mail assistance for the homeless, and ID document storage for the homeless. It is also a SNAP (food stamps) distributor.

Its office is located at 7142 N. 57th Avenue, Glendale. Its phone number is 623-847-2772.

The Brad Riner Assistance Office at the First United Methodist Church is a little over three blocks away from the Arizona Justice Center. It can provide clothing, toiletries, sack lunches,

food boxes and, in some cases, limited assistance with utility bills and with bus passes.

The Riner Assistance Office is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Mondays and Tuesdays. It is located at the church at 7102 N. 58th Drive.

On Wednesdays, there is an informal worship service at the church at noon, which is followed by a free meal.

Maricopa County has a regional homeless court. It is designed to resolve problems for people who have arrest warrants for victimless misdemeanor offenses. Prosecutors, public defenders, counselors and judges work together to resolve cases and to allow people to perform community service in lieu of their fines. It is not an easy program and often takes months to complete.

Various justice courts and municipal

courts can refer cases to the Regional Homeless Court. The court meets in a shelter, Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS), at 204 S. 12th Avenue in Phoenix. Its secessions resemble more of a graduation ceremony than a traditional court hearing because the judge is usually only giving good news. The Regional Homeless Court can be contacted at 602-506-0063.

Many people are homeless, or about to be homeless, through no fault of their own. If you are not in a position to help cure homelessness as a societal problem, perhaps you are in a position where you could help one person.

Baseball and politics are America’s pastimes

Whoever thinks there is no divine sense of humor may want to reconsider — especially after the latest occurrence of “the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November.”

In other words, Election Day 2021 or, as it will forever be known in Atlanta, “World Champions Day.” With an ethereal sense of timing, politics and the national pastime again collided. And in this instance, the “Home of the Braves” prevailed.

The inaugural iteration of this column chronicled a rhetorical baseball

“beaning” of the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia, which left both seeing stars — but not all-stars.

Opening Day brought a verbal brickbat, delivered by the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue via ESPN, which apparently now stands for Expect Sports Politicized Nonstop.

Sure enough, Joe Biden — though old, slow and confused — apparently possessed enough verbal and muscle memory to use a “woke weapon.”

During his ESPN interview, Joe at-

tacked Georgia’s election reform law, calling it an “atrocity” and “Jim Crow on steroids.” He ignored the fact that the new statute expands early voting to 17 days statewide and gives counties the option to add two Sundays of voting for a total of 19 days of casting early ballots.

Never mind that Biden’s home state of Delaware provides no days for early balloting — the fictitious flames, fanned by ESPN, other outlets within the partisan press and, of course, the White House, soon stoked a “woke fire.” Ol’ Joe then chimed in with his “remedy” of preference: Major League Baseball (MLB) should move the All-

Star Game out of the Peach State.

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred — no “Mighty Manfred,” he — morphed into “Rollover Rob” and hastily did Biden’s bidding, with the specious claim that moving the AllStar Game from Atlanta to Denver was the “best way to demonstrate our values as a sport.” If so, it was a curious way to demonstrate a commitment to racial justice.

lion.

While MLB placed a higher value on virtue signaling than genuine support of a “majority minority city,” it’s worth noting that “Corporate COVID” also infected Atlanta-based businesses. Both Coca-Cola and Delta Airlines succumbed to the virtue virus, denounced the Georgia election reforms. and were apparently fine with the loss of the All-Star Game.

But an interesting thing happened in Atlanta. The Braves discovered a vaccine for virtue signaling: victory.

Proving that the late, great, catcher-turned-author-turned-broadcaster Joe Garagiola was right when he titled his book “Baseball is a Funny Game,” the Braves had the last laugh.

Defying the odds, and their own winloss record, the Braves finally moved above .500 for good on Aug. 6, then finished the regular season with 88 wins and 73 defeats.

In the post-season, Atlanta outmuscled Milwaukee, leaving the Brewers crying in their beer. They found unlikely star power to defeat the Dodgers and brought the Astros back to earth, winning the World Series four games to two.

The series finale in Houston was especially impressive, as the Braves shut out the Astros, 7-0.

“Shut out” also accurately describes the policy triumphs of the Biden ad-

ministration in its first year. Simply stated, there are none. An illegal invasion. A shameful abandonment of Americans in Afghanistan. Runaway inflation. Crippled supply lines. Radical school boards and leftist politicians denying parental authority, replacing education with indoctrination.

That last disturbing development prompted a political upset as unlikely as the Braves’ World Championship — and it occurred the same night.

Deep-blue Virginia, dependably Democrat, elected a Republican governor. Glenn Youngkin, who went from underdog to governor-elect, described his victory as a triumph of everyday Virginians, based on fundamental principles — and a rejection of radicalism.

With the congressional midterms and more gubernatorial elections slated for November 2022, Republican hopefuls are shouting, “Wait ’til next year!”

Political aspirants, whatever their partisan label, would do well to remember that electioneering is not a game.

But it is a competition, and with America poised to awaken from its “wokeness,” voters may be inspired by a spark of the “divine.”

As in “The Divine Comedy.”

Honor those individuals who wore the uniform

Will you enjoy a Veterans Day parade? Nov. 11 is the one great day to honor our men and women who served, watch the bands, the flags and the display of pride as we are reminded just how much we owe those who wear and wore the uniform.

The fighting of World War I ceased in 1918 when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This was regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of the Armistice Day in 1919. It was President Eisenhower who in 1954 changed the name to “Veterans Day.” More than 18 million living veterans served during at least one war as

of 2020. Seven million veterans served during the Vietnam War, and 3 million have served in support of the War on Terrorism. As of 2020, only 325,000 World War II veterans were still alive, but 16 million had served in that war. Every Veterans Day there is a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, which commences at exactly 11 a.m. with a wreath laying on the Tomb of the Unknowns.

If you haven’t been to the Anthem Veterans Memorial, you are missing out. The memorial has five pillars that represent the five branches of the United States military. They are staggered in size, and the military seal placements on each pillar are based upon the Department of Defense-prescribed precedence. At precisely 11:11 a.m. on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, the sun’s rays will pass through each of the five pillars’ elliptical openings, with the shad-

ows aligning precisely to illuminate a glass mosaic medallion of the Great Seal of the United States. For one thrilling minute, this monument can be seen in its full glory.

My father served in World War II, my husband was in Vietnam and my grandson is in the Navy. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, my father, like tens of thousands of young men, joined the Army Air Forces immediately. Stationed in England with the 450th Bomb Squadron of the 322nd Group, he recalls flying over France on a mission when the propeller fell off the plane. Land the plane in a farmer’s field, find some baling wire, have

a French farmer and three airmen get the propeller back on the fuselage, and fasten it on with a wire used for hay.

Take off and make it back to base.

To fly again, fight again and try to save humanity from the clutches of evil. So goes the stories of war.

Historians will analyze the effectiveness of wars we fought in, and our elected officials will decide on the new wars we will have to fight. But the “we” is really a group of devoted, loyal, highly trained, brave men and women who chose to join the military.

Their commitment never ends, their work often underestimated, their experiences are often unimaginable.

Veterans Day exemplifies how thankful we are and how much we owe our men and women who fought, fight and serve.

Prices, demand hold steady amid cooling market

While the frenzy of the local real estate market has calmed over the last few months, prices and demand continued to hold steady in September.

The average number of days a listing spent on the market in Maricopa County increased very slightly, from 27.5 in August to 27.8 days in September.

According to The Cromford Report, 50% of sales closed in Maricopa County during September sold for over the listing price, decreasing from 53% of August sales, continuing a downward trend that started in June.

Even with this downward trend, the closing price per square foot increased

for the third month, up from $258.61 per square foot in August to $262.14 in September.

The S&P/ Case-Shiller Home Price Index, published Sept. 28, covers home sales from the second quarter of 2021. Phoenix ranks at the top of the list of cities with the highest appreciation rate at 3.32%, more than twice the national average of 1.62%. It will be interesting to see how the cooling of our market over the last few months affects the third quarter Case-Shiller HPI. September saw 432 MLS listing sales

closed in Glendale and 371 closed in Peoria. Today there are 229 active and available listings (not counting properties already under contract or pending close of escrow) in MLS in Glendale and 224 active listings in Peoria. That is 53% of one month’s inventory in Glendale, down from 63% last month, and 60% of one month’s inventory in Peoria, down from 64%. Maricopa County inventory is 74% of September’s closed sales, down slightly from 75% in August.

According to ShowingTime, the platform Realtors use to schedule most of the MLS showings, Peoria listings in the $200,000 to $399,999 range had an average of 14.29 showings per listing, increasing slightly from last month.

Glendale homes in the $200,000 to $399,999 range saw a decrease in the average number of showings per listing from 15.6 to 11.20. Not all showings are scheduled through ShowingTime, so actual numbers are typically higher.

According to Freddie Mac, as of Oct. 14, National Mortgage Rates reported U.S. weekly averages of 3.05% for a 30-year fixed, 2.3% for a 15-year fixed rate, and 2.55% for a five-year ARM. According to MLS statistics, 73.5% of Maricopa County buyers financed their home purchase in August, while the rest paid cash. Buyers using a conventional mortgage to purchase a three-bedroom detached house with two bathrooms paid a minimum of $225,000 in Maricopa County, $274,000 in Glendale, and $285,000 in Peoria. Conventional financing made up 75.4% of September financed sales.

In September, FHA buyers in Maricopa County paid a minimum of $238,085 for a detached home with three bedrooms and two baths. Peoria FHA buyers paid a minimum of $275,000, and Glendale FHA buyers paid $300,000. FHA buyers made up 9.1% of financed purchases in September. Maricopa County VA buyers making a similar purchase paid a minimum of $285,000, Glendale VA buyers paid $357,000, and Peoria VA buyers paid $345,000. Home sales financed with VA loans made up only 6.7% of September financed sales.

The remaining financed transactions used other financing methods. For the week ending Sept. 26, 5% of Maricopa County sellers contributed to their buyer’s closing costs, the highest percentage reported since March 7.

At the other end of the market, the highest-priced home sale in Maricopa County last month sold in Scottsdale for $8.675 million. Peoria’s highest-priced home sold for $2.024 million. The highest-priced home sale in Glendale was $2.51 million.

Coyotes to hold open practices for Valley fans The Coyotes will hold a brief coaching seminar prior to each practice with Valley amateur coaches. Cigna, Cardinals making a play on breast health

Cigna and the Arizona Cardinals hope that women across Arizona take their breast health seriously all year long, not just for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For the 12th consecutive year, the Arizona Cardinals presented the “Crucial Catch Intercept Cancer” game sponsored by Cigna on Oct. 10. The two organizations work together to educate the community about breast health and the importance of preventive screenings.

Cigna employees and guests, along with 125 other cancer survivors and previvors, were honored and performed in the halftime show on Oct. 10 with the Arizona Cardinals cheerleaders. Previvors are individuals who have tested positive for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation and therefore have a significantly higher risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer than the average population. These individuals make an extra effort to manage their elevated risk through a combination of healthy lifestyle choices, increased surveillance and preventive medical procedures.

One of the Cigna employees who participated in this year’s event was Heather Jaeger, senior clinical program manager at Cigna and a pharmacist by trade.

“Cigna gave some of its employees the opportunity to participate in the halftime show,” said Jaeger, who was also able to bring her daughter Kate to the event. “I believe it was the 12th year that Cigna sponsored the ‘Crucial Catch’ game. It was like a lottery to give people the chance to participate, and so I was lucky enough to get picked.”

The halftime show consisted of a health and wellness drill instructed by celebrity trainer Chris Powell.

“It was super fun, and I got to participate with some of my co-workers and the Cardinals cheerleaders,” Jaeger said. “It was a little nerve-racking because I didn’t want to mess up the moves, but it was really fun. The cheerleaders were right next to us cheering us on, too, so it made it quite a fun activity.”

Jaeger first participated in the halftime experience in 2013. “(The Cardinals stadium is) such a huge venue that I think it really brings to light early detection of breast cancer and how important that is,” Jaeger said about the annual Crucial Catch game.

“I can tell you that this was the fourth time that I’ve been able to participate in the halftime show, but the very first show I participated with someone who was at the game the year before, which prompted her to do her self-exam when she got home, and she found a lump.

“That really brought that truth to light that people pay attention (during these events), and it gets people to either do their mammograms or do their self-exams, whatever it is to catch breast cancer early. I think that is why it’s so important for all of us to participate.”

breast cancer in 2013. She had a lumpectomy and received chemotherapy and radiation and is currently still on medication to prevent a recurrence.

“I know October is breast cancer pink ribbon month, but it is really important for women to not put off screenings until October,” Jaeger said. “I think it is a good time to remind people about screenings and self-exams, but staying on top of scheduled appointments, mammograms all year long is really important.”

While several health care facilities are starting to get back into a normal schedule with routine checkups following the COVID-19 pandemic, Jaeger hopes that COVID-19 is still not a deterrent for women to get their annual exams.

“My fear is that COVID may be scaring people out of the health care facilities, and so I am afraid that there are people out there now that put off their screenings that maybe would have been diagnosed earlier,” Jaeger said.

“While we have a lot of attention toward breast cancer in October, it’s important every month of the year to

just make sure that those screenings are getting done.”

Cigna is a sponsor for the organization Check for a Lump, a breast health education and support organization for people with breast cancer in Arizona. Check for a Lump has four major programs, including its education program to teach women around Arizona more about breast health; a program that helps women undergoing chemotherapy obtain a free wig; a program that provides free mammograms; and the super survivors program that hosts gatherings for breast cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers. “Cigna has a lot of resources for patients and employees as well,” Jaeger said.

“Lots of great resources that are available to people who want to learn more about it, and Arizona Cardinals (has some) as well. They have some great resources that I have seen on their website just to increase awareness and to just make sure that women are being screened.”

Cerealphoria milks the trend of over-the-top shakes

Ernesto Peralta says everybody loves ice cream and cereal. So, in 2019, he and his wife, Amy, blended the two and opened the food truck Cerealphoria.

Recently, the couple moved the store into Westgate Entertainment District, serving cereal milkshakes and other creative desserts.

“What we’ve done is created a simple concept that is very easy and moves fast,” he said.

Cerealphoria boasts four milkshakes ($7). The M:1 — the most popular menu item — has Fruity Pebbles, Trix and Froot Loops, topped with strawberry drizzle.

The M:2 has a chocolate tinge to it with Cocoa Puffs, Cookie Crisp, Oreo O’s and chocolate drizzle.

The M:3 blends chocolate and peanut butter with Cocoa Puffs, Reese’s Puffs, Honey Nut Cheerios

and peanut butter drizzle. Finally, the M:4 has a little Southwestern flavor to it with Apple Jacks, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and churros, with caramel drizzle.

Not enough sugar? The ultimate cereal milkshakes ($12) top the M:1 and M:2 each with a variety of sweets at the shop, formerly known as B: Fast Cereal Bar. Guests do not need to stick with the menu. They are free to experiment with the more than 25 cereal choices.

Along with milkshakes, Cerealphoria offers fresh fruit parfaits ($7), sundaes ($6), cheesecake in a cup ($6), cereal and milk in a cup ($5) with any toppings.

Peralta spent 25 years in the restaurant business, owning burger joints in Kansas City. The couple moved to Arizona to start Cerealphoria.

Peralta said Cerealphoria wasn’t

affected by COVID-19, because it opened during it.

“The relaxation of the rules and people starting to go out more often is helping us,” he said. “We’re starting to see all this foot traffic coming back, so it’s only going to get better for us.”

The company’s biggest challenge has been finding the right employees. Cerealphoria has five employees, all of whom it took some time to find.

Isabelle Crisp is one of these employees. She said the family-friendly environment makes Cerealphoria stand out from the competition.

“It’s a really fun and energetic energy, especially because we’re at Westgate,” Crisp said. “I get a lot of different types of people, kids and adults, and honestly the adults are more excited than the kids when they walk in here, which is SEE CEREALPHORIA PAGE 20

Thirsty Lion set to open largest location at Westgate

Thirsty Lion Gastropub is expanding its footprint to the Westgate Entertainment District in the building that formerly housed Saddle Ranch Chop House. The restaurant is set to debut its largest location in Glendale in December 2022.

The Westgate installment of Thirsty Lion — located on the corner of West Coyotes and Sunset boulevards — will be the fifth Arizona location. The 9,800-square-foot, two-story design will boast a rooftop patio, indoor and outdoor bars, an open kitchen concept, and flat-screen TVs for sports spectators. Large groups will be able to rent the rooftop space to for parties.

The downstairs patio will be 5,251 square feet, while the upstairs will sit at 1,378 square feet.

CEO John Plew said the company secured the Westgate location, which will seat 400 guests, thanks to efforts by the city and community.

“The city of Glendale has been wonderful to work with,” he said.

Since opening its first location in Arizona in fall of 2011, Thirsty Lion has quickly become one of Concept Entertainment Group’s most successful restaurants, which include nine existing locations across Oregon, Arizona, Colorado and Texas.

Thirsty Lion and CEG experienced substantial growth in the last few years, opening two new units in Arizona — Desert Ridge Marketplace in 2019 and Chandler Viridian in 2020 — and mov-

ing its headquarters to Scottsdale.

During the pandemic CEG launched Central Kitchen, an online virtual food hall operating out of Thirsty Lion locations, to provide guests with diverse cuisine options from one central kitchen. Four virtual brands were developed for Central Kitchen, each featuring distinctive culinary directions and scratchmade food available for takeout and delivery from the one website.

Plew is excited to contribute his fresh dining experience to the community that Bob Parsons, who bought the entertainment district, has worked on revitalizing since 2018. He said the West Valley

wanted to include an elevated dining experience that would stand out from the mass-appeal options at Westgate.

In an area blossoming in employment, business and residency, a high-quality dining in Glendale will build strong community ties, according to Plew.

“We felt that there was an underserved market for the type of cuisine and level of food offerings,” he said.

Above everything else, Plew values a balance of maturity and approachability at the Thirsty Lion establishments.

“It’s one thing to have elevated food, but you still have to have to be approachable to the people,” he said.

Problems, problems, why are there problems?

Two men were shipwrecked on an island. One started screaming and yelling, “We’re going to die. We’re going to die! There’s no food, no water!

We’re going to die!” The second man leaned up against a palm tree so calmly that it drove the first man crazy.

“Don’t you understand? We’re going to die! We’re going to die!” The second man replied, “You don’t understand. I make $100,000 a week.”

The first man looked at him quite dumbfounded and asked, “What difference does that make? We got shipwrecked on an island with no food and no water. We’re going to die! We’re going to die!”

The second man answered, “You just don’t get it. I make $100,000 a week, and I tithe on those $100,000 a week to my church. My pastor will find me!”

Now, that’s what I call peace.

You might be saying, “But I don’t make $100,000 a week.”

I hear you, readers. Me neither. But I’ve been on that island, haven’t you?

Yet, here we are. We’ve made it somehow. So far, we have survived 100% of our worst days. I have found that through the good times and the notso-good times, God is always with me.

Maybe you think it was a coincidence that finally got you out of your mess.

However, could it be that coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous?

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Problems, problems, why so many problems?” Did you ever

think your problems and tough times could bring you closer to God and resources you would have never discovered any other way?

Here are a few quotes from sage leaders that might help you with your views concerning problems: “Problems can break up our self-sufficiency like a sledgehammer can break up concrete.” “Amid the thorns, you discover the rose.” “When you’re at the end of your rope, you discover God lives there.”

Proverbs 14:4 says, “Where no oxen are, the manger is clean, but much increase comes by the strength of the ox.”

In other words, oxen make a mess, but that is much better than having clean stalls with no oxen.

In that day and rural culture, oxen were like gold. Oxen get things done, plow the fields, produce milk, haul the crop to market — the list is long. One

trip to India will convince you of the value of oxen.

Where there is life, there will be unwanted “stuff” from time to time. But if there is no manure, there’s no milk.

It’s a fact of life. The only place where everything is perfect and in order is a graveyard. You’ve seen that bumper sticker with the four-letter word that starts with “s” and ends in “t”? Well, that “stuff happens.” But it also means that “life happens.”

Why not use the manure for growing, not groaning? Too many of us think the light at the end of the tunnel is a train! Some of us, after so many manure experiences, feel like the guy who went to get his brakes fixed, and the mechanic said, “I couldn’t repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder!” Pain in life is inevitable, but misery is optional.

The key to life is to enjoy the good times and learn to grow during those not-so-good times. The bad times in life may produce something extraordinary, even miraculous, later. That manure grows the grass that the oxen eat to produce — milk! Yes, manure happens, stalls get dirty, but at least you’re alive, and most likely, this too shall pass. Got milk?

There’s a way to go from pieces to peace in the shipwrecked-on-anisland times of your life.

Here it is. Mastered by God, you can control how you react to circumstances, people and calamity.

Mastered by anything less than God, you are a vic-

tim or a puppet of circumstances, people or calamity. Amid my tough times, I like to say to myself, “I will, by my life’s choices, prove that the Word of God is true.” That brings God into the picture.

When you’re up against something big, face it head on with God by your side. That’s what mentally tough David did with his Goliath. He picked up his only resource, a slingshot and five stones. The first stone he threw hit the giant Philistine right in the head, and down he went.

Afterward, David said, “Goliath was easier to defeat than when I killed the lion and the bear. He was so big I couldn’t miss him.” Then David explained, “I was only trying to get ahead in life.”

You see, you can go to pieces or have peace. But life’s not fair. Life was never meant to be. There will be manure times and milk times in life. Deal with it or it will deal with you. The only thing worse than dealing with manure is wishing you had.

My life’s experience reveals that God is a very present help in times of trouble — and you don’t have to make $100,000 a week to secure God’s services.
