The land under consideration for annexation lies either near or directly straddles the Loop 303 in North Peoria.

For now, the Peoria Unified School District Governing Board is putting a halt to its search for a new superintendent. At its Nov. 8 regular meeting, the vote was unanimous to retain Linda Palles-Thompson as the interim superintendent, citing a need to maintain the stability she has brought since the ouster of the former superintendent last year.

The decision by the Governing Board came after Chief Personnel Officer Carter Davidson gave a history of the search process, beginning in February when McPherson & Jacobson was selected as the consultant group to lead the district’s superintendent search.

McPherson & Jacobson collaborated with the district administration to outline a search process and define a search timeline to begin in November.

Peoria Real Estate Development Officer Scott Whyte is working with the owner of a parcel of land in the heart of the city. It is along Grand Avenue and wraps itself around the new primary care center under construction at the intersection of Grand and Cotton Crossing.

The parcel is called Peoria Place. At one time, more than a decade ago, there were elaborate plans drawn up showing the land (minus Cotton Crossing, which wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even on the drawing board) as a potential site for a university.

It never happened, and the property on each side of Cotton Crossing remains zoned for residential.

During a phone conversation last week, Whyte said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m working with the owner of Peoria Place to see if we can change the zoning on the property.

Maricopa Integrated Health System changed the dynamic for the property; perhaps industrial and some has mixeduse potential. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been working with the owner to see if we can get agreement with the parties; special attention to property along Grand Avenue. Rather than residential, industrial and other revenuegenerating uses make more sense.â&#x20AC;?

If all parties reach agreement on that principle, Whyte said a Planned Area Development would be pursued. Their discussion involves all of the parcels. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With Maricopa Integrated Health Systems bringing in 300 patients per day and 200 employees, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very different from vacant land,â&#x20AC;? Whyte said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reasonable to think a business could be supported there. Industrial units and mixed use could be supported. We believe marketing opportunities exist.â&#x20AC;?

Whyte said the frontage on 83rd Avenue and Cotton Crossing are being evaluated as well. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re trying to find a link to a PAD. Right now, it is largely industrial,â&#x20AC;?

Opinion City needs to right the ship Many individuals who were raised in Peoria, then moved away to either attend college or find a better job, returned in later years to find a growing city, one that expanded its borders beyond belief.

Those who chose to stay behind eventually made the decision to found the Peoria Arizona Historical Society. Through the generosity and foresight of the City Council at that time, the buildings we know as the historical society display areas and museum belong to the city, which has leased them to the society for a nominal sum.

Historical society board members have changed over the years, and petty arguments have risen, causing a seemingly unbendable rift among two different factions.

The action taken by some society members in 2017 to elect a new board of directors was seen as a betrayal by what the letter writer below implies.

Ken Johnson is one of the founders of the society, a tireless volunteer, a native of Peoria, a person of honesty and integrity.

What you see is what you get with Ken. Yes, he is set in his ways, and more than once, he has been critical of articles published in this newspaper. But he has always been on board in support of his city and the historical society. He is a loyal friend to those whose moral beliefs are close to his own.

Now, he is angry and frustrated, and rightfully so. No litigation between the city and the “old”

historical society board of directors should be the deciding factor for a veteran’s request to reclaim his military items for a display table at an honor breakfast. A call to both parties’ attorneys in the litigation should have been made by the city official handling the case.

Both parties’ attorneys should have signed off on this one exception, regardless of how the litigation ends.

At this point, the city needs to assume the responsibility for bringing this situation to a swift conclusion. Bring the two parties together, iron out the differences.

Let the hysterics cease on both sides. Get those museum and display buildings open and let history begin anew.

Letter to the Editor Why treat a veteran like this?

I was born in north Peoria in 1934 and have lived in Peoria all of my life, except proudly serving our country and the city of Peoria in the military. The majority of my years were in a foreign country.

I have been involved in the Peoria Historical Society for about 20 years, serving two terms as president, serving as a volunteer during open hours of the museum and at present, I am serving on the Board of Directors.

A few years sago, Councilmember Vicki Hunt was the society president.

The rest of the Board called for her resignation as president at a meeting.

In my opinion, this was not a pleasant meeting.

The first part of January 2017, a city employee asked that the museum rooms be cleared of display items to allow workers to work on the air conditioner units. Items were pushed to the corners and the wall. Sometime later, I was telling Councilmember Hunt that we were not open because the rooms were not presentable pr the city’s request.

Hunt asked, “Who told you that?”

I felt that she did not believe me.

In May 2017, a new slate of officers was planned for election to take over the society since the “old” board was dormant. Hunt asked me if I was going to attend the election meeting. I told her no. Someone of the group established a new mailing address, asking for membership dues to be sent to the new address.

The “old” board hired an attorney, as well, and the new board also hired

an attorney. The city of Peoria changed locks on the buildings and no one is allowed in. This has been in effect for over a year.

Now the sore spot. There is an honor breakfast for veterans Nov. 9 (this letter was received after that date). I have several military items locked inside the museum and am unable to get them for the breakfast display table.

A city employee told me the city is sorry, but the attorneys still will not allow anyone in the buildings.

How long must we wait for a decision as to who will continue to serve in the museum? My opinion is if the other group with its leader had not tried to take over, the museum would still be open.

Is this any way to treat a veteran who has served his country?

It was several years ago not everyone in the region agreed about allowing the annexation to occur. Sun City West Fire District (now called North County Fire & Medical District) objected and stalled the effort. Last year, the city and North County resolved their differences and entered into an intergovernmental agreement, whereby North County withdrew its objection. So, the city is moving forward with its plan to annex six parcels. City officials have approached the ASLD to seek reconsideration of the annexations.

At the Nov. 13 study session, Planning Director Chris Jacques said, “Over the last couple months, we’ve had discussions with the ASLD,” and has been told the annexations are “on a path for consideration by the State Selection Board.”

nexation of other parcels. State land cannot be annexed by the municipality until written authorization has been received by the State Land Commissioner and the State Selection Board. The State Selection Board is composed of the governor, state attorney general and state treasurer. State Selection Board meetings occur as needed and when authorized, there’s no set schedule and until a Board meeting was held earlier this year, the last State Selection Board meeting occurred several years ago.

To lend some perspective to the conversation, council was told State Trust land makes up 24 percent (35,713 acres) of the total acreage within the city (see blue area in the map at right). Bureau of Land Management makes up 20 percent (29,713 acres), while private ownership totals 40 percent (56,282 acres).

Before the study session, Jacques was asked if the city had plans to purchase part of land and bank it as was the case with Sunrise Mountain Preserve.

Jacques said the term “land banking” for the ASLD was a tool similar to a planned area development, where it can define the maximum number of units and maximum number of gross floor area for commercial purposes. He said the term “land banking” in this instance has nothing to do with acquisition.

City Attorney Vanessa Hickman laid down the rules the city must follow before annexation. She said the city needs to work with ASLD on zoning entitlement; this is where “land banking” goes into effect. She said it sets up other entitlement possibilities.

Earlier, Jacques said Parcel D.1 (462 acres on both sides of Loop 303 at Happy Valley Parkway) is high priority for the city. He said it is designated mixed-use, business park, office and high-density residential.

Career and College Day a whirlwind for students

As in years past, the parking lot at Centennial High School was almost full.

Students in the Peoria Unified School District were coming and going at full speed Nov. 3 during a four-hour window of opportunity. It was the annual Career & College Day; a time to speak with experts in their field and interns with short experience; a time to learn which direction you wanted to take on your life’s journey.

High school students were there seeking guidance about their futures after graduation. Middle school students also were looking for guidance, many accompanied by one or both parents.

John Henry, who is taking courses at West-MEC, spoke with Jonah Samplin, a sophomore at Liberty High School, who was asking about information technology courses available at the

career and technical education overlay district.

Henry told Samplin that with completed courses at West-MEC, in addition to his regular class schedule, he could get a job “right out of high school.”

West-MEC classes are open to juniors and seniors in Peoria Unified School District high schools.

Just a few steps away, Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Dennis Badi was giving students a look at what the Naval Academy has to offer.

“Our business is developing naval leaders of tomorrow,” Badi said. “I help by contacting and counseling men and women through the application process.

My job is looking to develop leaders of the future at the navy, local, state or national level.”

classmates were supervising the art of painting plant pots. Brianne Barclay, 9, a student at Lake Pleasant Elementary School, was carefully applying paint to a pot she said was later going to be given to her mother.

Standing nearby, Peoria FFA Chapter President Alexus Thompson was describing a desert plant to a passerby.

Thompson said she wants to be an “ag” teacher and plans to attend the University of Arizona to accomplish that goal.

One of Thompson’s classmates, freshman SunHi Vasquez, has other plans for the future; she wants to be an American Sign Language interpreter.

Both students were handing out cards indicating the various careers open to agriculture and animal science students, such as sports turf and biotechnology.

Yes, even a fashion design instructor from Phoenix College was displaying illustrations from her class, which offers dual enrollment. She said Sunrise Mountain High School offers the program, so that once students complete high school and attend Phoenix College, those classes are already credited.

The fashion design course has been in place 45 years, dual enrollment for two years.

The future was on site to explore for four hours during Career & College Day. Look for it again next year.

Dictionaries find appreciative audience Third-graders express enthusiasm over paper-bound information book

In this day and age of super-technology, it was a welcome site to see: Third-grade students at Sahuaro Ranch Elementary School becoming excited about receiving their own personal dictionaries, compliments of Peoria Rotary Club. The dictionaries were delivered Nov. 8 to the students at the school.

For more than a decade, members of the Peoria Rotary Club have been delivering dictionaries to third-graders in Peoria Unified School District. It is not just a dictionary filled with spellings and definitions of words. It contains the longest word in the English language — almost 2,000 characters — that de-

fies pronunciation by the lay person. It is defined as a chemical compound containing more than 250 amino acids.

The dictionary also has a page filled with illustrations of sign language words. A student was seen practicing sign language after she received her dictionary.

One student came upon a page that he indicated would help him learn multiplication. On another page is a listing of all the planets in the universe; on a facing page is an illustration of where the planets exist in the galaxy.

All of the students were quick to write their names inside the dictionary.

MouthMobile helps veterans with free dental care

Aspen Dental’s mobile dental office, the MouthMobile, rolled into Glendale Nov. 3 to give free care to local veterans.

Local dentists and volunteers provided X-rays, fillings, cleanings and extractions to 34 veterans in need at the new Aspen Dental at Westgate.

The annual MouthMobile tour is part of Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement through which Aspen Dental practices across the country have donated more than $14 million in dentistry since 2014. Nearly 13,000 volunteers have helped more than 30,000 veterans in need by providing them with free dental care.

“The MouthMobile is a fully functioning dental office on wheels. There are two operatories, a sterilization area, full X-rays machine and handicap access,” Dentist David Sung said. “The MouthMobile travels around the country, stopping in as many as 30 cities a year as part of Aspen Dental’s Healthy Mouth Movement, providing free dental care to veterans.”

“Unless a veteran was a prisoner of war and was classified as 100 percent disabled, or has a service-connected injury to their mouth, they don’t receive dental benefits through the Veterans Association,” Sung said. “That leaves a great deal of veterans with no access

to affordable dental care, especially those with no dental insurance and that is why Aspen Dental dentists across the county decided to focus on giving back to veterans.”

The 34 veterans served needed dental work from cleanings to intense dental issues and were treated by four Aspen Dental dentists, 20 Midwestern dental student volunteers and four faculty members. They performed more than $20,000 of donated dentistry during the Glendale event.

“We took appointments and walk-ins.

All veterans needed to do was make an appointment or show up,” Sung said.

“We wanted to treat their most urgent need first, especially if the patient is in any pain, but typically the services offered include cleaning, fillings, ex-

Replacing sensors and cameras is relatively straight-forward and can be performed by most mechanics. However, the calibration needed to return ADAS to full operation is a specialized task requiring special information, training, tools and facilities.

It is important to verify the facility selected is able to properly repair and

recalibrate the damaged system, and AAA recommends requesting proof of the work once complete.

As technology continues to evolve, drivers need to be better educated and more aware of their vehicle’s capabilities. This includes understanding how the vehicle systems work as well as how much repairs may cost if damaged.

AAA recommends drivers review their insurance policy regularly to ensure they have the appropriate coverage to cover the cost of repairs for any damage and that deductibles are manageable to minimize out-ofpocket expenses.

Bird scooters have 90 days to prove their worth

Peoria City Council came to a consensus at its Nov. 13 study session.

The council and mayor have agreed to give the Bird scooter company 90 days to prove the personal transportation is worth allowing on the streets of the city without burdensome government oversight.

Jay Davies, the city’s chief policy advisor and City Attorney Vanessa Hickman took turns relaying to council what the 90-day review means and the kind of data their offices would be collecting to come up with a course of action, be it an ordinance or no action.

Davies said considerations address the fact the Bird scooter company is operating legally; it has purchased a business license from the city; users are likely to be operating illegally; the city’s initial approach has been open-minded but with concerns of public safety, possible placemaking in the areas served by the scooter company personal injuries to riders and others, much of which could be attributed to riding the vehicle on a sidewalk.

Davies said the city contacted the company quickly and both explored the possibilities in the future and addressed concerns.

The city’s office of communications activated social media, Davies said, and over a 10-dayperiod, 15,000 responses were received.

Hickman gave a summary of a proposed pilot program to explore the viability, address safety, manage the footprint, generate and review data to guide council’s decision-making for future use.

Agreement elements would be temporary and exclusive, parameters and deployment would be outlined.

The scooters would be allowed for use on sidewsalks and speed would be limited accordingly. Requirements for use would be posted. Maintenance records would be required along with

data collection and reporting. Fees would be considered, indemnification and insurance would be required and the entire agreent would be subject to termination.

The scooters’ “nesting” area would be on 83rd Avenue from Peoria Avenue to Thunderbird Road. They would be prohibited from parking on private property and parking zones.

Users must be 16 years of age or older and possess a drivers license.

Adult helmet use is encouraged and minor helmets required.

Not all councilmembers are fans of the scooters, but realize, as City Manager Jeff Tyne called them, they are a “national phenomena.”

Coyotes one win away from state final

Two down, two to go for the Centennial Coyotes after they dominated Vail Cienega for a 55-7 quarterfinal victory Nov. 9 at Centennial High School.

The Coyotes had seven different players score a touchdown, with nor rushing totaling more than 69 yards, as the team moved into the semifinals with another dominating victory.

“We always tell our players to do the little things right and the big things take care of themselves,’” Coyote head coach Richard Taylor said. “We played well, a few mistakes early, but they

kept battling and never stopped playing hard.”

On the first play of the game, Tawee Walker took a handoff and raced around the right side but fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Cienega.

“Thought maybe we were not going to be very focused after that play,” Taylor said. “But as the game went on, we calmed down and got very focused on what we did.”

After the Centennial defense forced a three-and-out for Cienega after the fumble, the Coyotes returned to what the Coyotes have done all season.

for a touchdown with just over four minutes left in the first half.

Aside from that touchdown, the Coyotes’ defense was dominant again — they recorded five shutouts on the season and entered the game allowing an average of five points a game — and shut down Cienega.

The Coyotes allowed 118 passing yards, but held the Bobcats to minus six yards rushing as a team.

“Their defense is just so vicious this year and they fly around the field, It is very hard to move the ball on them because of the turnovers and havoc they create on the field,” Cienega head coach Patrick Nugent said. “We just couldn’t do much against them tonight.”

The Coyotes offense was led by Morris, who connected on five of 10 passes for 82 yards and a touchdown, and Jaydin Young, who tossed his first touchdown pass on a 30-yard pitch and a 30-yard touchdown pass to Dyelan Miller early in the third quarter.

Jackson caught two passes for 69 yards and a touchdown and Walker had two rushing touchdowns and Stark and Davon Fountain each found the end zone.

Cactus crushed by Saguaro 69-6 in quarterfinals

Cactus head coach Joe Ortiz knew his team faced an uphill battle in their 4A quarterfinal matchup against No. 2 ranked Scottsdale Saguaro Nov. 9, but he never expected what his Cobras saw at Saguaro High School.

Cactus (8-4) saw its first season under Ortiz end as the Sabercats cruised to a 69-6 victory to send Saguaro into the semifinals to face No. 3 Goodyear Desert Edge (9-3) 7 p.m. Nov. 16 at Scottsdale Coronado High School.

The Sabercats have won five consecutive state titles and 10 in the past 12 years and Ortiz knew his team would have to play a perfect game against Saguaro.

“Those kids battled all game and they didn’t quit,” Ortiz said. “We knew what we were up against, and they fought.

After Cactus was forced to punt on its first possession, Saguaro struck quickly when Conner Soelle took the punt and raced 60 yards for a touchdown two minutes into the game.

Saguaro’s defense forced the Cobras on a three-and-out on their second possession and the Sabercats offense responded when Marqui Johnson scored on a 5-yard rushing touchdown and the rout was on.

Saguaro (11-1) pushed 28 points across in the first quarter and nearly equaled that in the second to lead 55-0 at halftime.

“I think we’re playing complete team football,” Saguaro coach Jason Mohns said. “We don’t watch the scoreboard and we do not play down to our opponents. We’re holding ourselves to a high standard, and I think we’re playing to that standard right now.”

The Sabercats defense entered the game with three consecutive shutouts, and nearly had a fourth before the Cobras finally got on the board against the Saguaro second string defense.

There were four minutes left in the game when Cactus’ Anthony Flores scored on a 14-yard rushing touchdown to end the shutout bid by the Saguaro defense.

Quarterback Tyler Beverett completed 13 of 14 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns while Isreal Benjamin rushed for 103 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Johnson caught four passes for 93 yards and two touchdowns while Hayden Hatten grabbed six passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns for the Sabercats.

Saguaro’s defense held the Cobras from getting their 10 possessions to three-and-outs and they didn’t get their first first down until there were three minutes left in the third quarter.

Mustangs lose to Williams Field in quarterfinal

With a spot in the 5A football semifinals on the line, second-seeded Williams Field High needed one final stop from its defense in the final 2 two minutes, and it got one.

Sunrise Mountain quarterback Keegan Freid, an Air Force commit, took a fourth-down snap and tried to escape pressure but was wrapped up by a swarm of Black Hawks, ending the 7th-seeded Mustangs’ chances at a comeback as Williams Field hung on, 21-14, in a 5A second-round playoff game at Williams Field in Gilbert.

The Black Hawks (11-1) advance to the semifinals Nov. 16 against No. 3 Notre Dame Prep (12-0), which is fresh off a 14-0 victory over Millennium 140. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Campo Verde.

The Black Hawks and The Saints did not meet during the regular season.

“Offensively, we have to finish,” Williams Field coach Steve Campbell said. “We moved the ball really well

but we didn’t finish drives. We had a couple of turnovers that were pretty uncharacteristic but I’m not really worried about Zack (Shepard) coming back and making those again next week.

“We need to eliminate the controllable penalties like your false starts, illegal procedures, and jumping offside.

Those we need to fix.”

Black Hawks running back Jaden Thompson pounded his way to 148 yards on 17 carries, scoring his first touchdown on the opening drive and

then scoring again in the third quarter to give Williams Field a 21-7 lead.

“He’s a downhill back and he gets everyone around him excited to block for him,” Campbell said of Thompson.

During their previous match up with the Black Hawks this year, Freid passed for more than 300 yards and nearly led the Mustangs to an upset victory. This time, Freid was limited to 167 passing yards.

“We have played against five, possibly six Division 1 quarterbacks this year. The defense has had its hands full all season long and has done a great job against these guys,” Campbell said. “We did some stuff defensively scheme-wise and the kids just executed. That’s the biggest thing. We are more detail-oriented and the kids are able to take more coaching. That’s where our growth has been throughout the season.”

Highland moves to semifinals with hard-fought 15-12 win at Liberty BYJASON STONE GSN Staff Writer

Style points don’t usually count for much in football, and Highland coach Brock Farrel could care less, anyway.

“I don’t mind if we win ugly,” Farrel said after Friday night’s dramatic 15-12 road win over Peoria Liberty in the 6A high school football quarterfinals. “I’ll take it.”

The Hawk move on to face No. 12 Chandler on Friday at Hamilton High in Chandler.

Highland players will definitely take the victory in a game in which they didn’t play their best but still proved they had a championship-caliber defense and a never-say-die attitude.

Highland (11-1) escape and earn a date with No. 1 Chandler in a 6A semifinal game next Friday.

“That was the best feeling I’ve had in a while,” Highland senior cornerback Dayton Huffman said after watching the final kick sail wide right with a stiff wind to the kicker’s back.

Highland’s players erupted onto the field after the miss, which sent them to the semifinals for only the second time in school history and the first time in 6A, the state’s largest classification.

Highland’s defense, which had given up 14 points in its previous three games, was up to the task once again.

That was good news for the Hawks, because they were sloppy on offense and special teams, coughing up the ball four times.

interception on their first offensive snap and the second on a fumble after a long drive into Liberty territory.

“I would have been more worried had we been down 14-0 after those first two turnovers,” Farrel said. “It probably helped that last year we had a lot of ugly wins. It’s just something we do.”

The teams combined for seven turnovers, two missed field goals and a blocked punt. Both left points on the table in the first half after miscues by the opponent set them up in good field position.

Liberty (10-2) led 3-0 for much of the first half until Highland got on the board with a 3-yard touchdown run from Kohner Cullimore with 50 seconds left in the first half.

Liberty regained the lead when a drive that consumed more than half of the third quarter ended in a 4-yard touchdown run from Jace Accurso. It capped an 11-play, 81-yard drive that included two fourth-down conversions.

A missed extra point, however, kept the score at 9-7.

Highland then escaped disaster. First, the Hawks fumbled away the kickoff return, but Nelson’s first missed field goal – a 29-yarder against a stiff wind blowing in and to the left – reduced the damage.

Then, on Highland’s next possession, the Hawks’ snapper sailed the ball over the punter’s head, giving Liberty possession inside the Highland 10.

Instead of allowing a crushing touchdown early in the fourth quarter, Highland’s defense made a big stand and held Liberty to a 24-yard field goal to keep the score close at 12-7.

Highland fans will look back on the Hawks’ next drive as one to remember.

Starting at the 20, Highland used 12 plays to take its first lead of the second half. The go-ahead score came on 3rd-and-14, when quarterback Kaleb Herbert found Noah Burdick on the right side, and Burdick tiptoed down the sideline 44 yards for a touchdown.

On the 2-point conversion, Herbert threw a tight-end screen pass to Kyle Hester to make it a field-goal difference with less than 6 minutes left.

The teams traded punts, and Liberty took its final shot with 2 minutes remaining.

A 16-yard scramble from junior quarterback Jonah Guevara set up the Lions for the final field goal attempt. The kick had the distance but sailed wide with the direction of the wind.

“I thought we were going to block it,” Farrel said as Highland players celebrated.

Meet what you will never be without A burglar who needed money to pay his income taxes decided to rob the safe in a store.

On the safe door he was very pleased to find a note reading, “Please don’t use dynamite. The safe is not locked. Just turn the knob.”

He did so. Instantly, a heavy sandbag fell on him, the entire premises was lit by floodlights, and alarms started clanging.

As the police carried him out on a stretcher, he was heard moaning, “My confidence in human nature has been rudely shaken.”

This story illustrates what I would like to introduce us to today. We may stifle it; we might quench it; hurt it or even defile it.

However, we will never be able to escape it. It will always be there attaching itself to the highest standard we know. Everyone has heard it talk to us, congratulate us, convict us, remind us or try to guide us.

What am I talking about? Our conscience, of course.

Charles Wesley called conscience, “a principle within of watchful godly fear.”

In the Greek language, conscience means “to know with.” Conscience was used by the Greek people in their everyday

conversation. It meant “the pain that you feel when you do wrong.” Conscience is that inner faculty that indicates to us whether our actions are right or wrong, according to the standards we have in our heart.

Author Warren Wiersbe notes that, “conscience is not the law; conscience bears witness to the law. Conscience is not the standard; conscience bears witness to the standard. Conscience is judicial.

Conscience does not make or pass the law. Conscience bears witness to the law.

Conscience is our guide to our highest and best if we embrace the right standards.”

When we cheat on an examination, tell a lie, or do something that we know is based on expediency, our conscience was created to nudge us.

Something inside of us says, “Dude, you missed it!”

Of course, like the burglar above, we may have abused our conscience so much that it doesn’t nudge us anymore in the crucial areas of life which bring peace and soul prosperity. The Bible calls this an evil, defiled, weak or seared conscience.

Our conscience can only respond to the standards it has. That’s why it’s important to have the best standard.

Here’s a statement I heard someone once say. “Whether right or wrong, I didn’t get what I wanted and I’m angry about it.”

If this is a person’s standard, their conscience won’t function in correcting them.

They will not feel a thing. We also see this in some of the mass murders and violence going on these days.

“Life has hurt me, others have hurt me, and I’m going to strike back with vengeance.”

After they act out, they don’t even feel remorse. That’s called a seared conscience.

In the recent election commercials, lies and half-truths on all sides creating anger or fear, are the norm. Most don’t even give

what they lied about a thought. Why? Their consciences are defiled by the “win at all cost, end justifies the means” standard. Can you imagine what a society would be like with people in power with malfunctioning consciences? History is littered with societies like that.

Some believe conscience comes from behind us, that is, from our evolution.

Some believe conscience comes from around us, that is, from societal standards.

Some believe conscience comes from within us, that is, from our upbringing or family standards. Society or upbringing may give us standards, but it doesn’t give us a conscience.

The truth is conscience comes from above us. It has a common source and the common source is God. God gave all mankind a facility called the conscience and the best standard for the conscience to operate by.

As a Christian or a productive person, your conscience, based on godly values, is your built-in guide. It can help you or hurt you depending on the standard we choose for it. Hint: Don’t force your conscience to malfunction. The words of the Lord are pure words.

Lollipops always work I spent the day interviewing people for a position we had open. Watching how they responded to our questions. Eye contact.

Could they do the job? But mostly, did they make me feel comfortable, did they put me at ease? It reminded me of a column I wrote 20 years ago.

The lady was upset with me. She had been given a citation and I explained to her the law. She had a 6-year-old with her. The child could tell she was upset. Her arguing was upsetting the child.

I again tried to explain to her what the law said, and I was obligated to enforce the law. I told her if she did not like the law, she should talk to her senator or representative; they wrote the laws. All we do is
