It started in their west Mesa backyard. Ruben and Maricela Alvarez brought with them their culture, love of good food and, most importantly, recipes from Mazatlan, Mexico. The beneficiaries largely were friends and family, for whom they cooked in their backyard.

More people were coming, lines were forming and soon they were serving their tasty tacos from a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Now, they have four serving mesquite-grilled meats for tacos and burritos through the East Valley.

Tammy Powers has spent the last five years of her 11 years in education teaching anatomy and physiology for all introductory courses to the East Valley Institute of Technology’s health and medical programs.

The inspiration to become a teacher came in an unusual way: “While trying to build my resume for graduate school, I accepted a position at the collegiate level where I prepared all of the human cadavers for the biology department. It was there that I discovered my love of teaching.”

She said she loves EVIT’s diversity, noting the school serves 11 school districts across the East Valley.

But her favorite part about teaching “is being able to instruct students on a subject that I am so passionate about, while striving to inspire them daily to reach their highest potential.”

You would need a book to fill Brady Wald’s accomplishments over a 20-year career in education. He comes from a family of educators and is entering his fourth year as principal at Liberty Arts Academy and The Leona Group.

Under his leadership, Liberty Arts Academy has increased their enrollment from 180 to 350 students within the past three years. He and his team have integrated a Finland-inspired educational model that promotes an emphasis on education, play and family with an emphasis on helping students develop a love for learning through collaboration, active engagement and relationship building.

“I wanted to create a learning model and environment that is a great place to learn for students and an amazing place for teachers and staff to work,” he said, adding the favorite part of his day is “to see a student grow; academically, emotionally and socially.”

Bears are known for big appetites and ferociousness in a fight. And that pretty much describes Basha High in some ways – a big appetite for excellence in student and staff achievement and, where its teams are concerned, a ferocious spirit that inspires every team to play its heart out.
