Peoria’s health care industry is booming BY SYDNEE WILSON
Peoria Times Contributing Writer
Peoria has seen a rapid increase in stateof-the-art health care facilities in recent years. This expansion has made Peoria a center for quality health care that has impacted the community and economy. “An increase in health care facilities reaps many benefits,” said Jennifer Stein, Peoria interim economic development services director. “Services that were not offered within the West Valley or within a reasonable driving distance may now exist. Part of these
services provides a proactive approach to health care. To our city, it provides a diversification of services and employment, which is something we always welcome and support.” Stein said in the last year, Peoria added 300 health care jobs, and it will continue to work with leading industry experts to keep it growing. The largest off-hospital medical campus in Arizona, Plaza del Rio, is one of the many recent additions to Peoria’s health care lineup. The 185-acre medical campus offers a variety of medical services, including more than seven types of senior living facilities.
Perry Gabuzzi, director of brokerage services for Plaza Companies, said the opening of Plaza del Rio has impacted the community. “Additional medical services in the community have created options and increased the level of care available to patients while bringing new services closer to home for patients,” Gabuzzi said. “As the community grows, so does the demand for services, and with additional providers in the market, competition drives increased outcomes and levels of care for all.” SEE HEALTH PAGE 3

Kristi Pease was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, and she does not want anyone else to go through what she did. She founded the nonprofit Kristi’s Klimbers, which is hosting free mammogram screenings for uninsured or underinsured women Saturday, Nov. 6, at the Peoria Community Center. The organization provides resources to breast cancer patients, breast cancer survivors and others who need support.
“I was a head of executive corporate role for Hopkins Health Care for about 35 years and was really busy traveling all over the world and was a single mom,” she said. “I let about three years go by before I got a mammogram. I was fit and healthy, so I didn’t really think that much about it.” She was casually chatting with co-workers one day and mentioned a lump she had found. Pease said one of her co-workers was adamant about getting it checked out and told Kristi’s Klimbers helps make mammograms more accessible, affordable and convenient for women by offering on-site screenings.
