SoHo63 celebrates two years in downtown Chandler

Fall is the ideal time for a wedding in the Valley—the weather is perfect and it’s just right before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Luckily, for local wedding and event planners, SoHo63 just underwent renovations in preparation for this busy season.

Described as a “hip and historic wedding and event venue,” SoHo63 recently marked its second anniversary in downtown Chandler. The venue features a terrace modeled after a New York City rooftop, multiple modern indoor spaces and a gated entryway.

To prep for the busy event season ahead, the facility has been undergoing a deep cleaning to restore its historic charm. New flooring has been added to the main ballroom and new restroom vanities were installed, among other upgrades. Tiles were also added to the Tribeca Terrace to provide a smooth surface for guests, according to staff.

“While all of the changes were cosmetic, they will truly enhance the experience that event hosts and event guests will have here at SoHo63,” said owner Megan Schmidt. “The renovations include fresh paint, LED lighting, elegant entry drape to frame the doorway in The Plaza, upgraded vanity and mirrors in both restrooms, and beautiful new flooring in Gramercy Ballroom.”

The changes are all part of the venue’s mission to remain modern while paying homage to the building’s historic charm.

“The recent renovations to SoHo63 certainly add elegant touches and improved upon fine details through the entire building,” Schmidt explained.

“SoHo63 is a historical building, built in 1916, and started as the O.S. Stapley Hardware Store. While the recent renovations enhance the event space, we wanted to preserve and highlight the historical elements of the space, such as an original marble entryway, hand-laid

brick wall and restored ceiling tiles.”

She added that, since opening in 2013, SoHo63 has established a name for itself.

The versatile space can accommodate weddings and other types of gatherings of 25 to 200 guests with four indoor and outdoor spaces that can be used individually or combined.

“The event space presents a perfect mix of East Coast style and West Coast culture,” Schmidt said.

In addition to the building, Schmidt believes the staff is also part of what makes SoHo63 a great event venue.

“Although the venue itself is beautiful, I believe what truly sets us apart is the event host’s experience with our team,” she said. “The entire SoHo63 team is truly invested in their clients, their events and each other. We have the pleasure of working with some couples for up to two years before their weddings and really have the opportunity to get to know them. We are sincerely invested

in making sure their planning process and their wedding day is enjoyable and everything they have been dreaming of.

Staff members at SoHo63 are also proud of the event venue’s rave reviews online and appearances in several wedding and event industry publications.

New Canopy Lane community under construction

People who drive by Dobson and Germann roads in Chandler will notice a new group of homes under construction.

Tempe-based builder Keystone Homes is building Canopy Lane, a small community of 15 homes.

Jeff King, vice president and general manager of Keystone Homes, said one model home is already built and is decorated and furnished.

“We have also completed two spec homes which are nicely appointed, and three more are currently under production,” he said.

They expect construction on the entire Canopy Lane community to be completed in one to one-and-a-half years.

Canopy Lane features three floor models, King said. The 1,969-squarefoot single-level Jacaranda home; the 2,202-square-foot two-story Palo Brea and the 2,305-square-foot two-story Sweet Acacia.

“They range from three to four bedrooms with dens, and the two-story homes have lofts at the top of the stairs that are nice for entertaining,” King said.

The homes at Canopy Lane will feature three different architectural styles: the Andalusian, which, King said, is a southern Spain style; Tuscan, which has a European look, and the San Juan Rustic.

“The San Juan Rustic has really beautiful stone and brick features and really nice color schemes,” King said, adding that all three styles will complement each other nicely.

King said the entry level price for the Jacaranda home is $339,700 and the highest base price for the Sweet Acacia is $352,900.

In addition to being very close to local schools, King said Canopy Lane is near a variety of Chandler companies.

“Canopy Lane is really close in proximity to many employers, including those in technology and health care and banking. It is close to the tech corridor on Price Road, so people can commute to work in a few minutes,” he said.

King said the parcel of land that is being transformed into Canopy Lane is a “gem” that for years was a vacant dirt lot.

By the time Canopy Lane is completed, there will be a community area with a ramada, barbecues for residents to use, and an open grassy spot for pets to run around.

“We think it will attract a mix of families, including some who already live in the area that want a smaller square footage but don’t want to leave the area,” King said.

“Canopy Lane is unique because it is just 15 homes, so it’s going to feel like a little street in a little town, and people will get to know their neighbors well.”

King said people who are interested in checking out the model home and learning more about Canopy Lane are welcome to stop by. The model home is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

“Interested buyers can come in and build a home on a lot that they choose,” he said.

Security expert: Four steps to a better experience at the game

You arrive at the game, where confusion reigns in the parking lot.

Other cars crowd around yours, causing tension and slowing things down. It takes longer to find a space than you think, so you park hastily and run to the stands.

On the way, one of your group needs to run in the opposite direction for a bathroom emergency. She leaves, and the rest of you—unwilling to wait because kickoff is minutes away— continue to your seats.

Finished, the wayward member of your party can’t remember the seat numbers and you have her ticket. She calls you on her cell but the game has started and it’s noisy and you don’t hear the call.

It’s a mess. And yet it all could’ve been avoided with a simple plan Chandler resident Robb Corwin calls POPS. “‘POPS’ is an acronym to help you remember what to deal with when going to a major event, be that a sports event, a concert or any other big event. It came to me from experience.”

Corwin’s experience in managing crowded games, concerts and conferences is a little steeper than most. As CEO of the Pride Group, he has spent years organizing and coordinating large-scale activities for sports teams, corporations, zoos and arenas. The Pride Group has supplied security for the PGA, the NCAA, Major League Baseball, NASCAR and four Super Bowls.

“Whatever you need, from trailers and tents to security, we can supply,” Corwin said.

And in all the work he’s done, the one question people keep asking is... “‘How can I remember what to do when I’m in a huge crowd?’ People keep asking me that.”

So Corwin came up with “POPS,” which stands for Prepare, Observe, Patience and Safety/Security. The four steps work out like this: Prepare This can be as simple as having a plan to meet at the car in the case of an emergency when people become separated. “Very few people walking from their vehicle to the stadium have any idea where the car is parked.”

Instead of leaving that responsibility to the driver alone, take it on yourself.

Observe Know your surroundings. Where are the restrooms? The callboxes? “You need to locate security when you arrive at an event.”

Patience “This is the biggest single factor,” Corwin said. “People will leave late for an event involving 20,000 people and then get frustrated when the traffic slows them or it takes too long to get through security.” Be courteous to other drivers when parking the car, Corwin

said, and your experience will improve exponentially.

Safety/Security “Hold your kids’ hands walking through a crowd. Move your wallet from back to front. And even if the sun isn’t shining, put up the shades in your car windshield. The less a thief sees, the less he is likely to try and break in.”

A lot of the first step, preparation, needs to be taken before you get to an event, Corwin said.

“Know the route you have to take. A lot of people still don’t know that some roads to University of Phoenix Stadium

are closed during games. Know what you can take into the event or not. Can I take bottled water? How about binoculars?

Go to the website and find out.”

The bottom line: “We need to be vigilant as a community. There are more of us than there are law enforcement and security officers.”

Thomas joins Novocur Pain Clinics

Thomas completed his anesthesiology residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Services. The rise of “indie” (or independent) cosmetics brands, and online small-scale retailers like Etsy and eBay, have allowed home makeup, skincare and beauty entrepreneurs to reach a global audience like never before.

Created in the East Valley and shipped across the country and world, local cosmetics brands get into the game for different reasons, but it typically starts with a similar story. Mainstream cosmetics weren’t giving the creator what they wanted out of a product, so they decided to make their own.

Fifth Arizona Education IMPACT Forum is Oct. 19 The Chandler Chamber of Commerce and Alliance Bank of Arizona, in partnership with The Arizona Republic, are holding the fifth Arizona Education IMPACT Forum 2015: Disruptive Solutions for Students and Employers, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19, at the Chandler Center for the Arts. The public is encouraged to attend.

Keynote speakers include: • Jaime Casap, Google’s chief education evangelist, change agent and Valley resident who, between visits to the White House, has been involved with area schools, institutions and businesses to effect change. His evangelism revolves around his core belief that education has the power to disrupt poverty and change the destiny of any family in just one generation.

• Jerry Colangelo, best known as the team owner of the Phoenix Suns and the 2001 World Champion Arizona Diamondbacks. He is an advisor to both the business school and the sports program at Grand Canyon University, whose business school carries his name.

• Dr. Allan Gregory Gomez, author and former NASA astronaut selection candidate, who serves as chief academic officer for STEM Academy, developing internationally recognized K-12 curriculum and professional development programs.

“Arizona is locked in a global race for talent and opportunity, a race

that cannot be won without a highly educated, skilled workforce,” said Jim Lundy, CEO of Alliance Bank of Arizona.

“This conference is the realization of the bank’s commitment to education and the great educators, institutions and nonprofits that support them.”

Participants include representatives from Intel Corporation, Avnet Inc., Banner Health, Maricopa and Chandler-Gilbert Community Colleges, ASU, Republic Media, Arizona Commerce Authority, Expect More Arizona, Chandler Unified School District, Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Helios Education Foundation, AZ Community Foundation, College Success Arizona and the Arizona Department of Economic Security.

“The key to a strong community begins within the education system that is responsible for teaching our youth,” said Terri Kimble, Chandler Chamber of Commerce president/ CEO. “Our education system has a real effect on attracting and maintaining top employers in both Chandler and throughout the state. Parents and employers need to feel confident that our children are skilled and our workforce sustainable at a global level.”
