Glendale officials are seeking residents’ feedback on proposed district maps through online and community workshops, as well as city council meetings. The meetings are 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, in Glendale City Council chambers, 5850 W. Glendale Avenue; 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Glendale Main Library, 5959 W. Brown Street; and 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, 5600 W. Union Hills Drive. Every 10 years, local governments use new census data to redraw their district lines to reflect how local populations have
changed over the last decade. The city of Glendale is going through this redistricting process during the next several months, with city council final map approval anticipated in November. The city launched a dedicated webpage with population figures provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, current district maps, and information about community workshops. Find updated information online in English and Spanish at glendaleaz.com/redistricting. Questions and feedback may be provided at redistricting@glendaleaz.com or by calling 623-930-2252, option 1. Community workshops can be attended in person or viewed live on the city’s YouTube and Facebook channels, where view-
ers can provide feedback and ask questions of the redistricting consultant. A recorded workshop presentation will be available on the city’s Glendale 11 cable channel and the city’s webpage. Glendale’s population grew by approximately 22,000 people since the 2010 census. With six council districts and a current population of 248,325, the ideal number of people in each Glendale district is 41,388 to ensure that each councilmember represents approximately the same number of residents. The newly drawn districts will be used in the next city election in 2022. Find out more about redistricting and how to make sure your voice counts at glendaleaz.com/redistricting.
the video, he was caught in his seatbelt. Wheatcroft, who filed a lawsuit against the city, was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest, but that case was dropped. “When this incident took place, the Glendale Police Department conducted a criminal investigation and submitted a report to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office,” the GPD said in a statement sent by Jose Miguel Santiago, the public safety media relations coordinator. “That report included possible charges against former officer Schneider. After reviewing the report and videos, which have since been widely circulated through the media, MCAO notified the Glendale Police Department that they would not be
filing charges. The Glendale Police Department then conducted an internal investigation, in line with the city’s policies and procedures, that resulted in discipline against former officer Schneider. “The city will fully cooperate with any requests made by the attorney general’s office. The Glendale Police Department works tirelessly to maintain the respect of the community they serve. The Glendale Police Department wants the community to know that they are honored to serve and protect them and want to do so with a police force they can be proud to have representing them. As this matter is under litigation, we will have no further comment.” Schneider was suspended for three days and applied for retirement last year.

A former Glendale police officer has been charged with three felonies four years after body cam video showed him and fellow officers using a stun gun on a man 11 times during a traffic stop. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office filed three counts of felony aggravated assault charges against Matthew Schneider on Sept. 8. The body cam video, which was released in early 2019, shows Schneider using the stun gun on Johnny Wheatcroft 11 times during a July 26, 2017, traffic stop.
