BRUSH YOUR TEETH OR YOU WILL HAVE A HEART ATTACK!
um disease also known as periodontal disease, is very common and affects over half of all Americans, according to the Center for Disease Control. It is one of the most common infections; more prevalent than the common cold. Common symptoms of gum disease might include bleeding gums and bad breath. I have found in my many years of practice that pain or discomfort are rarely present in people who have gum disease. If left untreated, this chronic infection might lead to By G. Sroujieh, systemic diseases, such as DDS, AFAAID heart attacks and strokes. With detection and early treatment periodontal conditions are treatable and tooth loss can be kept to a minimum. WHAT IS PERIODONTITIS:
Periodontal Disease is any disease that affects the periodontium. Periodontium is the tissues that surround and support the teeth including the gums, the bone of the tooth socket and the periodontal ligament; a thin layer of soft tissue that connects the tooth to the socket. Poor oral hygiene can lead to gingivitis which is the mildest form of gum disease, It causes the gum to become red, swollen and bleed easily. Gingivitis, if allowed to progress, can advance to periodontitis. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums and stimulate a chronic
inflammatory response causing the tissue and bone that support the teeth to break down. Gums separate from the teeth forming pockets that become infected. As the disease progresses, the pockets deepen and more supporting tissue and bone are destroyed. Eventually, teeth become loose and will need to be removed. SYMPTOMS: Periodontitis has a lot of symptoms. Some of them are: bleeding gums which is a sign of inflammation and a major marker of periodontal disease, red and swollen gums, gum recession, loose teeth, migrating teeth, bad breath and unpleasant taste. RELATION TO HEART ATTACK: Several theories exist to explain the link between periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that the inflammation caused by periodontal disease increases plaque buildup in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels), which may contribute to the swelling of the arteries leading to the restriction or blockage of the blood flow. Another possibility is that the oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream attaching to fatty plaques in these arteries and contributing to clot formation. Coronary artery disease is characterized by the thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries due to the buildup
of fatty proteins. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly, which may lead to heart attacks. One research shows that almost immediately after exposing the human blood platelets to the
bacteria of the dental plaque, the platelets begin to clump together. Additionally, research from the University of North Carolina finds a link between gum disease and acute heart attacks. Other findings suggest that the presence of gum disease might increase the risk of second heart attacks in people with a risk of heart disease. Researchers have found that people who have periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary heart disease, as those who have healthy gums. And one study found that the presence of common problems in the mouth, including gum disease , cavities, and missing teeth, were as good at predicting heart disease as cholesterol levels. Additional studies have shown a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. People diagnosed with cerebrovascular ischemia were found more likely to have an oral infection when compared to other people. PERIODONTAL THERAPY: There are some things you can do to prevent periodontal disease such as brushing at least twice a day, flossing every day, stop smoking and visit the dentist once every six months. These are just preventive measures because once periodontal disease develops, more intensive treatments are needed. Periodontal therapy can be conservative or surgical. Conservative treatment consists of root planning and scaling (deep cleaning) accompanied with good oral hygiene. The purpose of deep cleaning is to remove hard deposits and infection from beneath the gum and clean the root surfaces. Deposits of bacterial plaque, calculus, food debris and pus that are present in the infected pockets are removed using special instruments. Periodontal surgery is used to modify and reshape the supporting bone around the teeth and is used when periodontal disease is advanced in nature. The bone is then modified and the excess gum tissue is trimmed away. CONCLUSION: Along with a good diet, weight control, abstaining from using tobacco products, exercise, blood lipid control, a good oral hygiene and a visit to your dentist to treat any existing periodontal disease is another simple, but very important thing you can do to help prevent heart disease, stroke and maybe several other diseases.

One of the Greats
A
t a glance, most of you salespeople out there will recognize the brand ACT! It’s hard to believe that once upon a time, businesses didn’t have the handy-dandy CRM tool that makes “Customer Relationship Management” an automated ease compared to keeping a little black address book and calendar full of scribbled notes. I still remember the exact moment I used the software, after a former publisher finally decided he should integrate the sales folks’ insights and activities with what we editors were doing. It was a revelation! Pat Sullivan, the gentleman on our cover created ACT! as well as SalesLogix. Some call him the “Godfather of CRM.” The guy is basically the Wayne Gretzky of contact and calendar software, and now he’s cofounded Contatta, a new company in the heart of the Airpark, to reimagine email and make our business lives more efficient—and fun. I’m deep into my Contatta trial period (you can check it out for 30 days free) and practically skip to my laptop every day, eager to see what cool new function I’ll happen upon. Please check out our feature on Contatta and consider how it could impact your own workday. Also don’t miss our Tech Q&A on page 28. We asked several Airpark business owners to spill on which apps are working magic for their companies. They just might have some tips you can use.

Trapp Connect Announces Internet Service for School Districts
Airpark-based Trapp Connect, trappconnect.com, announced an “affordable, super-fast and ultra-reliable” Internet service for K-12 schools with speeds up to 100 times faster than current ISPs. With the revision of e-rate priority 1 funding for wireless networks, Trapp Connect is able to provide the advantages of extremely fast Internet plus a 100 percent network-uptime guarantee to Arizona school districts, according to the company. Previously the blended bandwidth Internet was available only to data centers. Now that 90 percent of a school district’s wireless infrastructure is covered by priority 1 funding, schools have the ability to deploy advanced wireless networks. “Being able to provide this high level of Internet service to the people who need it most—Arizona’s students—really excites us as a company," said Cody Engilman, vice president of sales, Trapp Corp.

Reborn FOR HIS NEXT ACT, SOFTWARE VISIONARY PAT SULLIVAN LEADS THE CHARGE TO SAVE BUSINESS OWNERS FROM DROWNING IN E-PURGATORY By Kimberly Hundley Photos by Sam Nalven
18 | Scottsdale Airpark News September 2014
I
f like most of the corporate workforce you spend one-third of your day managing email, you likely snicker at snarky predictions of email’s impending death. If only, right? That’s not to say, though, that email isn’t broken— which is why so many of us are flailing about our cluttered inboxes trying to make them perform what software visionary Pat Sullivan calls “unnatural acts.” Sullivan, cofounder and CEO of Airpark-based tech venture Contatta, is determined to fix email to match the needs of modern-day, collaborative businesspeople. Think of email as an innocent Sleeping Beauty who’s been snoozing alongside Rip Van Winkle on the communication highway while Facebook, Twitter and texting zipped by. She’s just as nifty as the day she was born, and gosh darn it, we like her. It’s not her fault this relationship has grown stale. …continues on page 20

Contatta Cofounders Patrick Sullivan Jr., Adam Ross and Pat Sullivan step outside the offices at 14300 N. Northsight Boulevard the day after celebrating the opening of the private beta to the public last month. The trio, who worked together at SalesLogix in Scottsdale, hatched the idea for their collaborative email approach while talking over coffee at Paradise Bakery in the Airpark. CEO Pat Sullivan says he considers himself blessed over the past 18 years to have had the opportunity to pass on what he knows to his son, Patrick. “In so many ways, Contatta is his and not just mine since he is the product designer, visionary and chief perfectionist," says Sullivan.
September 2014 Scottsdale Airpark News | 19
…continued from page 19 “Email is great at what it was designed to do!” Sullivan says. “It’s a great tool for one-on-one communication. It’s everybody’s core application. But it’s 20 years old, and it hasn’t really changed in 20 years. And because we ‘live there,’ we force it to do things it wasn’t meant to do.” Namely: collaborate with multiple players, create tasks, act as a filing system, and manage contacts. Those are the four biggies that just about everybody who uses email has cleverly improvised around, and those are the four wishes granted by Contatta, the first email client with full contact management built in. Think of Sullivan, then, as the prince who awakens Sleeping Beauty to a world where internal emails disappear and inbox traffic plummets by 60 percent, among a plethora of other productive scenarios. Sullivan has a platinum track record when it comes to feeling the pain of a technical shortcoming and inventing a solution. As the founder of ACT! customer relationship management software
in 1987, he’s credited with essentially creating the CRM category. He followed that up with SalesLogix contact management software a decade later, selling both companies for nearly $400 million, according to the Phoenix Business Journal. He’s twice been named Ernst & Young “Entrepreneur of the Year,” and just a couple weeks ago was selected to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Governor’s Celebration of Innovation in Arizona. But Contatta, says Sullivan, is going to be his best deal yet, thanks to $8 million in investments and three years of development—a rare luxury for startups, and a boon for users who like their software fast and kink-free. Just this summer, the public was invited to try the beta version of Contatta for free. The official rollout is slated for October or November, but even then, any company or individual can sign on for a 30-day trial. If you fall in love with the platform, cost is $10 per month per user, and you can invite an unlimited number of guests to
Workrooms at no charge. It only takes a few minutes (sometimes less) to sign in current email accounts and begin using Contatta as your client; all email actions are mirrored, so the transfer bears no risk if you change your mind.
Think Outside the Inbox
Just what does Contatta do that Outlook and Gmail can’t? It brings all your tasks, contacts files, emails and team collaboration into a more productive inbox, explains Sullivan, who likens the application to having the project management tool Basecamp right in your email. For example, users can create Workrooms to share info, comment, leave time-saving “likes” and improve communication across teams. It takes just a few second to create and name a Workroom, and then invite coworkers or guests outside the company to join via email. That Workroom then becomes a dedicated place where parties exchange communication …continues on page 22

Contatta users can create Workrooms dedicated to specific projects or discussions. The “All Hands Workroom,” for example, is a place for general discussions among in-house staff; rather than distributing information or notifications in an “everyone@company.com”-type email—and generating a storm of reply-all feedback—a company can enjoy real-time information sharing and a discussion thread that doesn’t clog inboxes. Tasks and files may also be created and shared in Workrooms.

HOLY SHIRT! Q : Help! My favorite shirt has little holes! I just bought it a few months ago and followed the care instructions. What am I doing wrong? A: Many insects attack garments. In Arizona we have crickets and silverfish, as well as moths, that eat fabric and cause holes. Often the damage is not apparent until the garment is washed or cleaned. You might be able to have them re-woven, depending on their value.

rather than continuing to email and copy each other. They can leave files for group perusal, post emails to the room (while within an email, with just one click), assign tasks, tag each other to get alerts, assign due dates, brainstorm projects in real-time discussion threads and more. “We turn emails into discussions as opposed to discussing an email inside an email,” says Sullivan. Shepherding dedicated topics and groups to a workroom also prevents what Sullivan calls “replyall hell,” where a coworker, for instance, sends information to 20 people and they all start replying to one another. Contatta's contact management— as you would expect from SalesLogix alums—is also garnering rave reviews. For instance, you can click a “create contact” option in an email and cut and paste the person’s signature into a drop-down window that instantly fills the fields. The system also automatically scans the Internet for possible social media connections to the contact, allowing you to select LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter accounts to flesh out the profile. “In Outlook and Gmail there really isn’t a place to put notes from previous conversations [within a contact], or say, ‘Here is what I need to get back to you about,’” Sullivan adds. In Contatta, users can create a task within a contact—as well as in a Workroom— that includes specific notes, alerts, due dates and files. Another nifty feature is that within a given contact, you can elect to see every email, file or task you ever shared with them, all neatly presented in whichever list you choose to view. The inventory of “good stuff” in Contatta is hard to describe, says Marcus Krieg, directory of marketing strategy for WireBuzz in the Airpark. “It’s one of those things that unfortunately you have to
24 | Scottsdale Airpark News September 2014
see because you don’t know how much your life sucks using email until you use Contatta and see how it can simplify that,” Krieg says. “The pain point is latent—you don’t know you have it yet.” WireBuzz, which creates strategic marketing videos, is a creative group that once relied on Basecamp to help in managing projects and creating task lists. “Contatta takes that a step further by integrating with your email,” Krieg says, explaining that if he wanted to share emailed information on a Basecamp project, he’d have to constantly copy his team and import it into the app. “On Contatta, you just hit a button on your email and it shares it to the Workroom.” Another favorite of Krieg’s is the ability to be in a Workroom with others at the same time and essentially instant message people on the team. Aly Saxe, CEO of Ubiquity PR in Phoenix, says Workrooms have taken the place of other meetings, which is always a good thing. “What I like best is the organization factor,” she says. “You can find exactly what you need to find when you need to find it—whether it’s a person, a contact or a conversation you’ve been having with a single contact. I was one of those people who had a million folders and now I don’t have any. It works really well because of the way Contatta is laid out.” To business owners who are on the fence about giving Contatta a try, Saxe says it’s a no-brainer. “It’s extremely easy to get up and running. It’s going to save you a lot of time and improved productivity, especially if you have a small team,” she says. “Try it. If you don’t like it, you can always go back to whatever traditional, boring email you were using to begin with.”

Reflections on an
Entrepreneurial Life By Pat Sullivan, Aug. 5, 2014 Excerpted from blog.contatta.com
I
’m 61 years old. I started my technology career 30 years ago. Part of me looks back now and thinks, “Wow, where did the time go?” Yet another part of me still feels so young and energetic—not much different than when I was 30. As you age you begin to be aware of your mortality. Makes me want to make every day count! The AZ Technology Council recently nominated me for a lifetime achievement award. That, along with writing the e-book “10 Keys to Entrepreneurial Success” made me think back on my career, and what I had learned that seemed important enough to pass on. I’ve been so fortunate to have been a part of some great ventures. So many great memories! And though being nominated for a lifetime achievement award is humbling and an honor, I couldn’t help but think, “that’s really nice,

BUT I’M NOT DONE YET!!” And I’m not. Contatta, my current company, isn’t just a big deal. I believe it’s my biggest ever. It is so rare today for a startup to take three years and $8MM of investment to take on something as big as the problem of email—but that’s exactly what we’re doing. Few startups can raise enough money to build something as big and significant as Contatta. If we pull this off, it will easily be the biggest thing I have ever been a part of. Today most startups have to cobble together enough money to build something pretty simple and then prove they have something worthwhile. Then they can hopefully raise enough money to build what they would have built if they had the money at the start. Venture capitalists today generally only fund proven, later stage startups. It means large segments of the tech space are generally safe from being disrupted. Few startups can get enough money to take on a big category. Think Tesla. Think Workday. Think C3 Energy. All were started by billionaires. I’m not a billionaire, but we have been able to raise enough to take on a very big category that has not changed much in 20 years ...

Shared Appetite for Technology Which software makes your business fly? By Marjorie Rice

inding the right software for your business can save you time, money and a lot of frustration. But with so many out there vying for your attention—and money—choosing apps can be a daunting task. Where to turn? Your peers in the business world. We asked Airpark businesses to share some of their favorites.
Pit Stop Auto Detailing and Storage
Fave App: Appointment-Plus.com Pit Stop Detailing and Storage sends mobile detailing teams to put a professional polish on vehicles all over the Valley. The company also provides storage of vintage, exotic and classic cars. Pit Stop founder Marcus Morton uses the AppointmentPlus scheduling app to keep his teams of auto detailers on-time and on-target. “I found out about Appointment Plus through a story about them in the Scottsdale Airpark News,” he says. “Since it was a local company, I thought ‘Why not?’ I started using it about two years ago. It allows me to synch schedules, all on one device. I have it on my mobile phone, and all my guys are able to download it on theirs. “Instead of having to make a phone call to home base to figure out their next stop, the teams can download the app and get up-to-date information while they’re on the road. It also cuts down on paper costs and the risk of losing printouts.”

Airpark Bikes
Fave apps: LightSpeedretail.com; Strava. com Airpark Bikes owner Steve Driscoll uses the LightSpeed Point of Sale system for accounting and inventory—an especially important job for a company with so many parts on hand. The DC Ranch bicycle shop rents and sells mountain, road, triathlon and BMX bikes and motor bikes. It also has a large selection of parts in stock. “I’ve used LightSpeed for two years,” Driscoll says. “It’s great for my company. With LightSpeed we can track so many aspects of our business, including inventory, daily sales, overall growth and individual sales by employees. For example, if I’m at an event and someone asks me if we have a particular part, I can just pull it up on the app and know what my cost was and what the retail cost is. We also can look at bike sales in comparison to what our labor costs were for the day. It works really well and has been very helpful.” Driscoll also uses the Strava GPS Cycling and Running App, which lets him and his customers track their riding with GPS. “Say I’m going up a hill and want to figure out how fast I’m going,” he says. “On the same day there may be 10 other people on the same hill using Strava. The app lets me know how they’re doing, and how I’m doing in comparison with them

Bringing Mobile App Ideas to Life Local spike in demand for development expertise
S
cottsdale Airpark News checked in with J Belfore, Widely Interactive cofounder and software director, on how the local market has changed in the last year in terms of entrepreneurs looking to develop apps. What does Widely Interactive do? We develop and market websites and mobile apps. Recently we’ve seen a huge spike in the demand for our mobile app development. The reason being, everyone’s got a mobile app idea and not many companies around here are building them. Who is your typical mobile app client? We don’t have a particular niche we target. Generally, our clients are start-ups with a business model centered on a mobile app. They come to our office with sketches and notes and we brainstorm for a few hours until we have a really good sense of the purpose the app is fulfilling, how it will function and how it will be deployed. From there we deliver a quote and discuss next steps.

contacts and GPS. What’s the hottest new trend in apps? From an app publisher perspective, in-app purchases are big right now. The idea is you give the app away for free and charge a few dollars for upgrades. It’s being implemented commonly in gaming apps, but also now in business and utility apps as well. Most people don’t mind spending a few bucks here and there, and if you have tens of thousands of users, those bucks can really add up.
What’s the difference between a mobile app and a web app? Simply put, a web app is accessed by a browser, and a mobile app is downloaded from an app site. Both can look and feel the same on a phone. Web apps, however, are cheaper to build and more widely accessible, while mobile apps can be more interactive. Mobile apps have the ability to utilize the phone’s features such as camera,

You cannot, however, assume your app will go viral. This happens to an extremely select and lucky few. Rather, there should be a solid marketing plan in play that will drive awareness. technology they develop for both iOS and Android, download or demo their apps, meet the developers, and get a list of references. The No. 1 complaint we’ve heard from clients that have had bad experiences in our industry is their developer has gone dark on them and can’t be reached. Much of the time, this happens when the developer is unqualified for the project and can’t complete it to spec. Properly vetting the company will reveal any red flags before you engage them. Why choose a local company? So you can walk right in their office and shake hands. You want to have a relationship with the company you’re spending thousands of dollars with to help build your business. And there’s no better way to do that than to sit down with them face-to-face and have a conversation. Again, we’ve heard horror stories about developers not completing projects on time, not completing to spec, not returning calls, and not refunding money. If they’re operating several states away, it’s much more difficult to get their attention when you need it.

What it does: Whether you’re stranded on the side of the road or too busy to take your car in for service, you can locate the nearest mobile mechanics, detailers and oil change companies and have them come directly to you. How it works: The mobile app discovers the user’s GPS coordinates, searches thousands of company listings in the GoMechanic database, computes the distances and returns the nearest service providers. After calls are placed, the app sends follow-up notifications to collect feedback on the quality of service. The directory is managed through a custom admin system that Widely Interactive developed for GoMechanic.

Tailoring Content for Social Media Channels … and (Smile!) Getting to Know Instagram By Eric Olsen, Fasturtle
F
eeling intimidated by all the social networks out there today? Don’t be. At their root, they are all the same: they help people connect like never before. When used correctly, they enhance your company’s visibility to existing and potential customers. To unlock the full potential of a social media marketing campaign, you must first understand the basics of Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn:
Audience Expectation of the Big 3
Facebook: Informal, friendly, and shareable posts work best here. Images and videos that encourage interaction and further sharing garner over 90 percent engagement for small business pages on Facebook. Ask questions, request comments and share product or service information frequently. Twitter: Tweet throughout the day if possible— the Twitter stream moves fastest of all the social networks and audiences expect multiple tweets per day. They also expect prompt responses—72 percent desire a response within an hour. LinkedIn: LinkedIn users are professionals, so your posts should be too. Convey leadership while sharing goals, accomplishments, new hires and so on.
Successful Property
Facebook: Posts can be long or short, but audience engagement is always the goal. Anecdotes, questions of the day, and relevant hashtags, recently added to Facebook, encourage commenting and show personality. Twitter: Tweets around 100 characters get re-tweeted most.
34 | Scottsdale Airpark News September 2014
The ideal tweet has a link, an image, and two hashtags, but mix it up for variety. LinkedIn: Sparking conversation is the ultimate goal of this social network. Provide intriguing images or links to thought-provoking content to engage visitors. LinkedIn also allows for more targeted social media marketing via a company page: use yours to create posts and encourage dialogue with specific audiences.
Crossover
While these three social networks may seem vastly different, your content can be successfully reused across them. With a bit of reworking, you can share the same post on Twitter as you did on LinkedIn, saving you time and increasing your exposure. Remember, track your engagement to understand what your audience wants and when it wants it. If this task becomes overwhelming or is holding you back from achieving your goals, keep in mind that a professional search engine optimization and digital marketing team can help you leverage any type of social network to your ultimate advantage.

A Good Look at Instagram
Instagram—that cute little rainbow camera app—has grown into a social network powerhouse in just a few short years. With hundreds of millions of users and billions of photos shared, it is a highly beneficial (not to mention fun!) social media tool. Here’s how you can get in on it. What Is It? An app that lets users take pictures and videos from a mobile device and, using the ‘Share Settings’ option, share on Instagram and across other social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. What makes Instagram unique is its selection of filters that allow users to alter the color, tone and contrast of photos. Add a caption, throw in some hashtags, and you have a polished and personalized image to share. Instagram vs. Pinterest On Pinterest, each pin is a link to an external site. This social network is more like a search engine where users can look for specific products or content. Because of this, small businesses generally use it to generate website traffic and for search engine optimization purposes. Computers and Instagram Instagram photos and videos may only be uploaded from a mobile device. You can, however, browse profiles and post comments from a computer. Earning a Following Use your current social networks to notify followers and customers about your Instagram account. Or send out a newsletter—either way, include your Instagram username so that even folks without smartphones can follow you. Instagram’s “Find People to Follow” feature in Account Settings makes it easy to find supporters. Finally, add an Instagram badge to your blog and website. Measuring Instagram Success Use Iconosquare (formerly Statigram), a free Instagram analytics platform, to track comments, monitor photo engagement, and view other ana-
lytics. If you use HootSuite, you can stream Iconosquare to Instagram and monitor both. Multiple Instagram Accounts Switching from your personal Instagram account to your business’ account to post is not yet possible. However, Fotogramme and Iconosquare allow switching between accounts for monitoring purposes. Benefits As with most social networks, Instagram lets you do more than just promote products: it allows you to connect with the people who matter most to your business. Digital marketing pros in Scottsdale know that Instagram lets companies show a personal side, tell stories, and take people behind the scenes. This creates familiarity, builds trust, and provides a platform for long-lasting relationships. Some final tips about Instagram: participate in popular hashtags like #waybackwednesday, #throwbackthursday and #flashbackfriday. Introduce employees and discuss nonprofit or charitable projects. Successful social media marketing campaigns on Instagram are human, authentic and fun, creating impactful, emotional connections. Where do you see online marketing going in 2014? Pinnacle Aviation Pilot Celebrates FAA Award and 50 Years Soaring the Wild Blue
F
ifty years of flying private aircraft is a long time, and is full of many stories, places, events and people. While few pilots reach this milestone, Scottsdale Airport-based Pinnacle Aviation recently honored pilot Don Wade during a special ceremony at the company’s headquarters in July for reaching this career landmark—and for receiving a top aviation award bestowed upon Wade by the Federal Aviation Administration. “We are incredibly proud of Don for earning The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award,” says Curt Pavlicek, CEO for Pinnacle Aviation. “Don has provided exceptional service to the Pinnacle Aviation clients he has flown over the years. His 50 years of flying experience coupled with his acute attention to safety and dedication to flying has been a great attribute to the Pinnacle Aviation team.” Each year the FAA recognizes pilots who have demonstrated an exceptional lifetime commitment to their vocation with The Wright Brothers Master Award, a rare award reserved for pilots who have demonstrated professionalism, skill and aviation expertise by maintaining safe operations for 50 or more years. Only 176 pilots have received this award across the country this year and Wade is the only pilot in the state of Arizona to have received this top honor.
Childhood Passion
Wade’s passion for flying began at the age of 10 when his grandfather would take him to see the planes at the airport near their Ohio home. “At that time there was an observation deck over the terminal building. There were DC 6’s and 7’s and Super Constellations, Convairs and Martins that would start the engines in huge clouds of smoke, thunder down the runway and climb at a great rate of 400 fpm,” Wade recalls. “I remember Lane Aviation next door, and their Cessna ads about learning to fly. About a year later I had a bicycle and thought I could remember the way to the airport. So I rode my bike to Port Columbus, without telling my grandparents I would be gone. Upon my return I was immediately grounded for the first time. That was when I learned that it was OK to pursue your dreams—

you just have to report to a higher authority your location.” Wade’s passion for flight even evolved into a dream to become a NASA astronaut. “For a while I knew that I would be the first man to walk on the moon, but was crushed when I found out I was too young. All the slots were taken. I did come close to fulfilling the dream of space flight when I got to spend a morning in the space shuttle simulator and worked with Lockheed on orbiter processing,” Wade says. “It was one of those between flying jobs that an intelligent person should have kept, but I just loved flying too much to stay at a desk for the rest of my life.” Now, Wade is one of Pinnacle Aviation’s most decorated Charter Captains, responsible for flying the company’s roster of high-profile clients to and from their destinations on one of the company’s fleet of private aircraft. From Fortune 500 executives to professional athletes, Hollywood actors and politicians, Wade enjoys providing a higher level of service

Great White Wings
Asked what keeps him passionate about his career after 50 years, Wade says that he still gets filled with the same excitement he felt the first time he saw a plane leave the runway at Port Columbus, Ohio, Airport. “Like Wilbur Wright once said, ‘There is no sport equal to that which aviators enjoy while being carried through the air on great white wings,’” he says. Pinnacle Aviation was started in 1988 as an aircraft sales and acquisitions company. The company quickly grew into a full-service company, not only providing aircraft sales and acquisitions, but also providing full management, maintenance, and charter services. Pinnacle Aviation is headquartered in Scottsdale and currently has operations in Hawaii, California, Arizona and New Jersey. The charter company provides services both domestically and internationally with an impeccable safety record that is recognized by their IS-BAO Stage 2 Registration and ARG/US Platinum rating. A Letter from Dan Shufelt of Arizona Helping Hands … giving foster kids a place to sleep
A
rizona Helping Hands, in the Airpark at 7850 E. Gelding Drive, has been servicing the needs of Arizona families since 1998. We believe we are a hidden jewel in Scottsdale and would like your assistance in raising the community’s awareness of our activities. Arizona Helping Hands is one of only 17 charitable organizations that the state has approved for the Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Tax credit and the only Scottsdale-based organization in this select group. This credit permits taxpayers to donate up to $800 to AHH annually and receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit. Here’s some information on our Helping Hands for Foster Kids program. History: This program commenced in mid-2013, when our board met with a number of professionals in the foster-care field and learned there was no program in Arizona that provided bedding for foster families. Frequently placements are made and the children have no place to sleep at night. In kinship placements, relatives are called on, often at the last minute to take in relatives they had no plan for. We began this program with the intention to fill this void and provide and meet basic, essential needs of foster children. We provide beds and cribs to foster families. Additionally, we provide clothing, diapers, wipes, toiletries, high chairs and other items to ease the undue burden placed on these families who have stepped up at this time of crisis in foster care in Arizona. Population served: While focused on the over 15,500 children “officially” in the foster care system in Arizona, this program also supports kinship placements and individuals who are referred through social service caseworkers. Typical clients are referred by word of mouth, other agencies and DCS caseworkers. Growth of Services: · In the second half of 2013, we distributed 65 bedding units (either twin beds or cribs)—an average of 11 units per month—plus all the other assorted items. · During the first six months of 2014,
through this program we distributed 150 bedding units, an average of 25 units per month, representing a 127 percent increase over the prior period. · In the month of July, 2014 alone, we distributed 70 units! · In addition, we have distributed over 300 Dream Kits (toiletry packs) to foster families, as well as clothing and diapers. Examples: We have begun a subsection on our website (www.azhelpinghands.org) that details specific scenarios with which our staff and volunteers have assisted. One such example occurred in May. Ah, the golden years! When we can all dream of quiet days of relaxation, maybe travel, see the sights or just enjoy some peaceful leisure at home, maybe a fun visit with the grandkids. Sounds ideal, but for one grandma and grandpa, the plans all changed when they opened the door to find three grandkids on their doorstep, desperately looking for hope. Mommy was in jail, Dad was nowhere to be found, and the three little ones had no one. Unfortunately the grandparents weren’t prepared for raising another family, again. Part of a loving home includes a bed to sleep in and clothes that fit, and for babies, it means diapers and high chairs. When Grandma and Grandpa called Arizona Helping Hands, we were able to supply them with these things—necessities that allowed these three sweet kids to get a new start in life. As for the grandparents, they are doing what grandparents do best … supplying the love! We work to make life better for Arizonans—one child, one dream, one family at a time. Please visit www.azhelpinghands.org or call 480-889-0604 to donate today. From the foster families we work to serve, thank you! Dan Shufelt, Executive Director

OdySea Aquarium secures vendors in preparation for Fall 2014
A
s the new OdySea Aquarium prepares to break ground, principal and founder Amram Knishinsky has signed contracts with vendors and gained approvals from the SRPMIC Design Review Board, bringing his vision for the Southwest’s largest aquarium closer to fruition. The two-level facility, located within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, will span more than 200,000 square feet and is slated to open in December 2015. Reynolds Polymer Technology has been contracted to design and supply the windows and underwater acrylic tunnels that will move visitors to each level. Even the aquarium’s restrooms will have floor-toceiling windows for aquatic life viewing. Based in Grand Junction, Colo., Reynolds Polymer is the largest supplier of windows in the country and considered to be an industry leader in acrylic design and aquarium building. “Reynolds Polymer played a large part of the building of our Newport Aquarium in Kentucky,” said Knishinsky. “For the new OdySea Aquarium, they plan to use the most advanced technology and design available, taking this project to an even higher level.” Knishinsky also signed an exclusive agreement with SeaTREK, the largest underwater walking program in the world. Visitors will essentially descend deep into the “ocean,” where they will be surrounded by sea creatures on all sides. With SeaTREK, visitors do not need to know how to swim, nor do they need a scuba diver certification. “The OdySea Aquarium will be the only aquarium in the U.S. featuring SeaTrek technology,” says Knishinsky. In addition, the OdySea Aquarium has secured height approval for 58 feet. The community has also approved other “highin-the-sky” developments planned at the OdySea in the desert area that include the IMAX theaters (approved for 68 feet) and the Flight Shop, an indoor skydiving facility (approved for 78 feet). Both attractions are scheduled to open in 2016.

The Job Description Is Dead Welcome to the new era of defining jobs, job success
W
hen was the last time you read a job description? What did you use it for? Was it in any way relevant to what you actually do? In most cases, job descriptions become obsolete quickly because they tend to By Bill J. Bonnstetter, address duties and Target Training responsibilities, and International those are always evolving. Jobs change drastically as economic conditions shift or as technology alters the way the job is done. As a leader working with thousands of companies over three decades in the talent assessment and management industry, I’ve been witness to the gradual erosion of the job description. Today, the job description is on death’s doorstep. Rather than waste time updating a job description, there is a different approach we’ve perfected that companies small and large can use. It begins with uncovering and defining key accountabilities required by the job. This process always begins with one key question: Why does this job exist? Subject-matter experts gather to brainstorm through a facilitated process to establish three to five key accountabilities about how this job should be done. (Subject-matter experts are people who interact with the position on a daily or weekly basis: the supervisor, the supervisor’s direct manager, people who are performing well in the position or have successfully held the position within the last six months and people in lateral positions.)
business+science Priority is then assigned to each key accountability. For example, a key accountability for an outside sales manager would be: Effectively prospect, qualify, demonstrate and close according to company guidelines to ensure sales goals are met while maintaining company’s integrity and brand image Another example would be for the head of a private school:

Inspire students, staff and community to achieve internationally competitive levels of academic excellence by using data and relationships to disrupt the status quo and change student outcomes. These will later be integrated into job advertisements and postings as well as performance evaluations. They will also be infused into the interview processes, commitment statements and accountability programs. The real value of key accountabilities is that they point out the expectations of the job, giving the new employee a clear path leading to success. With key accountabilities, the tired fourpage job description is needed no more.

Technology changes—don’t let your business tactics lag!
T
By Barbara Luther, The Luther Law Firm
he Scottsdale Airpark has seen technologies come and grow, and come and go! Twenty years ago, the new technologies were far different from today’s latest and greatest. Using the same legal tactics of 10 or 20 years ago can lose you control of your intellectual properhoroty and even propel you into a seriously expensive lawsuit. Of course, these days we strive for our websites to have high recognition by customers. The downside is massive traffic from potential copiers. And the copiers have no shame. I recently heard of “online stalkers” copying updates of an
original website within days. It’s no longer enough to have the copyright warning (namely, “Copyright 2014 Owner All Rights Reserved”). You need to file for a copyright online at the U.S. Copyright Office to get coverage on the same date as you release the website changes. The upside is that filing the copyright application before copying means that you can sue that horrible copier and demand the copier pay your attorney fees. By the way, don’t file for a copyright on paper, because your copyright application gets the data of receipt through the U.S. mail— critical days later—maybe after the copier

has sprung into action. In another situation, you used to be safe in delaying trademarking your cool name and slogan, thinking “my business is just local.” Nowadays, you can watch employees leave and use the slogan, which is less likely if you obtain the trademark certificate and always use the ® symbol. A local business with the same clever name for 18 years recently received a cease and desist letter from the clever name’s new trademark owner in California. Had our local company trademarked the name first, it could have sold the rights to California and other states for
legalminding a nice chunk of cash, rather than begging the California company to leave it alone— or mounting an expensive cancellation procedure. Obtaining the trademark often costs less than a response to a cease and desist letter. Likewise, delaying patenting can deprive you of the ownership of your new, rockin’ invention. First, you can lose the right to patent by selling before the filing of the patent application; if you missed that opportunity, let’s file a patent application on the improved version before you sell it. Second, with the new “first-to-file” rule, if someone sees your invention (even before you sell), he can file a patent application and be first in line to receive the patent. Of course, there are new, untested laws to help you fight this copier, but fighting the copier robs you of business focus and may cost more than the usual cost of a patent alone. Don’t you need that money for marketing? Have you heard that “80 percent of product success is due to marketing”? And using online techniques to create buzz heats up the market for your new product introduction. The goal is rapid sales success, symbolized by the hockey-stick graph (horizontal for a short period before shooting upward). But if you have not first protected your product, copiers rush in and steal “your” sales. Many large companies have superior marketing power and access to markets—and, surprise, they can turn your hockey stick graph downward in weeks. In the worst-case scenario, buyers cancel orders and leave you with a warehouse of product and a mountain of debt. For less than the cost of an online campaign, you can protect all that great marketing investment. Protect your names and ideas now to create a sustainable business. O
ver the past several years, the Airpark’s own AXA Advisors Southwest has worked with local partners on Weekend Jetaway, an evening of music, culinary creations from leading Valley chefs, cocktails and casino games set in a private jet hangar within the Scottsdale Airport. During the event, guests play a casino-style dice game, with several lucky winners taking home a multitude of luxe prizes, including the grand prize—an all-inclusive, first-class trip on a private jet for four. “We are proud of what we’ve created, and now it is time to elevate it to the next level,” says Dillan Micus, executive vice president of AXA Advisors Southwest, recently named among Arizona’s Most Admired Companies for its work in both the business and philanthropic communities. Turns out, Micus and AXA were being literal. “Earlier this year, we partnered with Elevate Phoenix and PGA star Tom Lehman to take our concept to the next level together,” says Micus, noting all proceeds from the 2014 event will benefit the nonprofit organization. Lehman, an Airpark-area resident who has been playing golf professionally for more than 30 years and is the only golfer in history to have been awarded the Player of the Year honor on all three PGA Tours, is a founding board member of Elevate Phoenix. “Elevate Phoenix is a unique and often life-changing program for Arizona youth that provides in-school teaching; afterschool mentoring/tutoring; career instruction/post-secondary preparation; character, life skills and peer leadership development; community service; adventure activities; and reading/literacy improvement within urban public schools,” says Lehman. Currently, the organization reports a 98 percent graduation rate and 90 percent postsecondary rate among participating youth in Arizona’s most urban communities. “The heart of our success is the work of our team of full-time, primarily ethnic staff who serve as teachers, mentors and life coaches to students over multiple years. Teacher mentors are available to students 24/7,” says Lehman. “These one-onone connections make in-school learning more effective. As a part of this relational approach, Elevate Phoenix standardizes its learning objectives and equips staff to meet the varied learning needs of their students.” Currently, Elevate Phoenix is serving 4,500 local students at a cost of just $222 per student.
As the nonprofit organization got off the ground, it was funded wholly by contributions from businesses and civic organizations. “We’ve never done a large-scale gala or fundraising event involving the entire community,” says Lehman. “Our goal with Weekend Jetaway is to grow it into the premiere event of the fall season.” In an effort to show his support to the event in its first year of partnership, Lehman himself has signed on as the official Weekend Jetaway host and honorary chair. “Weekend Jetaway will take place in a private jet hangar within the Scottsdale Airpark on Saturday, Nov. 1,” says Lehman, noting the event has strategically been moved to November so it can take place the same weekend as the Charles Schwab Cup in Scottsdale, which he has won in previous years. “Like before, it will feature live music and both gourmet food and drink from chefs across the Valley including Sassi, SOL Cocina, The Yacht Club, Tom’s Thumb Marketplace, The Melting Pot and many more as well as dancing, a silent auction and even games—with the winner from the evening taking home a free trip for four on a private jet.” With Lehman and Elevate on board, this year’s gala will include some new twists as well, including the chance to be Lehman’s personal guest at the 2015 British Open, new sponsor Alliance Beverage, new restaurant partner Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North, and elevated entertainment. Tickets include food, drinks and entertainment and start at $100 per person. Sponsorships are available now and range from $500 to $10,000. Silent and live auction packages are also being accepted through the end of the month. To get involved at any level, or to purchase tickets, please visit www.weekendjetaway.org or contact committee team member Alison Bailin at abailin@hmapr.com or 602-318-3775.

Competition by Denigration Continues
Those horrible, wonderful Fixed Index Annuities By Thomas K. Brueckner, Strategic Asset Conservation
I
magine that you and your spouse are currently in the market for a new car. You have your three grandchildren several days each month, along with two large dogs, so you’re logically thinking that a minivan or SUV would be appropriate and safe. Yet when you walk into your local dealership to explain your needs, the salesman replies, “Oh no, those minivans and SUVs are reeeeally overrated; what you want is simply a good pick-up truck—step right this way …” You turn to your spouse incredulously, wondering aloud what part of your needs analysis this salesman missed. You patient-
ly explain that you want neither your dogs nor your grandchildren riding openly in the back of a pick-up truck, exposed to the elements, unrestrained during cornering or braking, and you repeat your request to be shown a variety of minivans and SUVs. Incredibly, your salesman disputes your rationale, citing studies done by Pick-up Truck and Four-Wheeling magazines proving the popularity of trucking in the United States, along with several articles slamming minivans and SUVs as products sold to the clueless and easily duped, and he concludes with this whopper: “Minivans and

most SUVs are bad for you; in fact, I don’t know of a single person for whom such vehicles are appropriate.” You leave the dealership stunned at such a biased lack of professionalism, and drive home questioning yourself. “Maybe we’ll just drive our old car for another year or two …” Sound implausible? The scenario I just described has been repeated annually in the offices of major brokerage firms around the country for decades, but especially during the last 14 years. Clients nearing retirement and looking for safety from market risk, have approached their brokerage firms say-

financialfundamentals ing, “I attended an educational seminar last week, and the (CFP/advisor/CPA) mentioned that Fixed Index Annuities credit market-linked interest when stocks advance but can’t lose those gains in a subsequent downturn. Given the huge losses we’ve suffered in the last 14 years, why haven’t you ever told us about such vehicles?” Out come the biased market studies and derogatory articles from investment magazines (90 percent of whose advertisers sell mutual funds and risk-based products), slamming most annuities as products sold to the naive by the caricature of the unscrupulous insurance agent. “Haven’t you heard?” asks your broker. “Most annuities are bad for you, sold by profit-hungry insurance companies; in fact, I can’t think of a single client for whom such vehicles are appropriate.” Many a client have left such encounters questioning their own common sense, wondering why their desire for safer yields was so horribly wrong. Our firm has done decades of due diligence on every product and strategy that we offer our older clientele. I personally own many of the solutions that we recom-
mend to our clients, and have done as well as they have in such products, including four of my own Fixed Index Annuities (FIAs). They are a tool in our toolbox, they solve a specific need, and they have steadily become the most popular product/strategy we offer, growing to more than $240 million of FIA dollars now on our books. Last week, I received an unsolicited email from David, one of our FIA clients. This man is an avid market-watcher/ investor, a retired engineer, and a Ph.D. who spent many months doing his “homework” on our recommendations before becoming a client nearly seven years ago. He was writing to tell me that he had just calculated his internal rate of return on his FIAs, and was surprised to discover that it was 9.1 percent annually to date. “I just thought you should know,” he wrote. Considering that the 85-year history of the S&P 500 is 8.3 percent, David is thus far “out-performing” the market without any downside risk, truly a remarkable achievement, even as most of our longstanding FIA clients are averaging between 6 percent and 8 percent annually.
Consumers of financial products should ask themselves a basic question. Of the 309 million people living in the United States, over 119 million benefit in some way from annuities or pension funds, their functional equivalent. These annuities are offered through major insurance companies, an industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people, and is heavily regulated by the states that employ additional thousands to do so. Q: How plausible is it that all of these people are selling, servicing, or regulating “bad,” harmful products—and thriving in business doing so? Hmmmm? (Next month: Part Two) Thomas K. Brueckner, CLTC, is president/CEO of Strategic Asset Conservation in the Greater Scottsdale Airpark, a conservative wealth management firm with clients in 18 states and 6 countries. Cachet Comes Home to Airpark Roots with Monterey Ridge

…continued from page 55 crash, no less—Cachet has come back to the Airpark with the launch of Monterey Ridge, a gated luxury condominium community just blocks from Scottsdale 101. “As a result of the recent housing recession, the project infrastructure was completed, and 45 three-story condominiums were built prior to the development stalling,” says Cody, noting the close proximity to amenities such as Scottsdale Quarter, Kierland Commons, Scottsdale Promenade and the Scottsdale Airpark were an immediate draw to him and his team. In early 2013, Cachet Homes and the landowner formed a joint venture wherein the remaining 144 units were redesigned and recently reintroduced to the market. “The product was redesigned to include single-level homes serviced by an elevator in an effort to meet the needs of a broader lifestyle” says Cody, adding that each home also has its own two-car garage with storage and access to a community pool. “Four models are open and ready for tours.” As with all of its projects, Cachet oper-
ates with a focus on surrounding land use, ensuring that neighborhoods are consistent with home values, and that homes are built with care and concern for the community as a whole. “Cachet looks beyond the structure to the on-going relationship every buyer has with their home, their neighborhood and their community,” says Cody. The Cachet approach to homebuilding implements a “Three C” approach— Character, Craftsmanship and Care. For example, to ensure “character,” Cachet integrates outstanding locations, providing homebuyers with convenience and beautiful natural surroundings. The design emphasis steers away from garagedominate orientations, favoring setbacks that create curb appeal.
Craftsmanship & Care
Part of Cachet’s commitment to “craftsmanship” is to employ architects who incorporate the latest design materials, techniques and finishes. Also builder-coordinated third-party inspections incorpo-

An example of Cachet’s “care” criterion is assigning each homebuyer a single point of contact to develop trusting working relationships. Cachet also employs proactive customer service through its “1/11 Program,” which offers the convenience of a regularly scheduled inspection of each new home in months one and 11 of ownership.
Digital Access
Technology is a focus as well. Case in point, the Monterey sales office. “While not entirely paperless, since we do still have folks who want that option, we digitized every element of our community to give our potential buyers access to all aspects of the property with the touch of button right from our office,” says Cody, noting that, of course, physical models are furnished and able to tour as well. Not All Travel Insurance Or Travel Protection Plans Stack Up Equally
ake a look at your vacation packing list: if “travel protection” is wedged in somewhere between “sunscreen” and “bug spray,” congratulations. According to the US Travel Insurance Association (USTiA), getting the right care, communicating with medical professionals and those back home, and paying for emergencies are issues that travelers may not even think about until they’re confronted with an accident or an illness, especially when abroad. Unfortunately, medical mishaps don’t take a vacation when you do. “My wife and I were on board the Carnival Glory Cruise Ship near Cozumel Mexico when around 2:00 a.m. I had a heart attack,” recalls Gilbert Molnar. “She called 911 on the ship, they revived me, put me on oxygen and kept me stable. By 9:00 a.m. I was taken by ambulance to Cozumel Medical Center.” “When we got there the Medical Center wanted $25,000 up front to start treatment,” he said. “We had purchased a
SkyMed membership years ago and we had our membership card with us. That turned out to be a lifesaver.” “SkyMed made all the arrangements and before long my wife and I were on a medically equipped jet from Cozumel, Mexico, back to Vancouver BC, Canada, along with a doctor, a nurse, two pilots and a medical assistant,” explained Molnar. “We are eternally grateful to SkyMed and their team because they not only saved my life, they saved us financially—over $46,000!” Arizona is home to the SkyMed corporate head office located in the Scottsdale Airpark. Operations are also directed from offices in Lakeland, Florida, St. Croix and St. Thomas USVI. SkyMed Canada, Inc. serves northern neighbors with a variety of membership plans from short term to multiple prepaid annuals. SkyMed International, Inc. is the flagship of the SkyMed Group of Companies. The company is celebrating 25 years of service to the traveling public and serving more than 250,000 members in North America, offering air ambulance membership services, medical air evacuations, emergency travel services, travel insurance, a full service travel agency and personal concierge services. For members that travel outside the 32 countries covered by SkyMed TAKES YOU HOME, the company offers GLOBAL Emergency Travel Services. Together they have organized air evacuations literally all over the world under almost every kind of circumstance. Real-life stories like the Molnar’s underscore the importance of taking specialized travel protection besides your regular health insurance along with you on your trip—whether it’s for play or for work. According to Will Klein, Chairman of the SkyMed Group of Companies and an Order of Canada Recipient: “Our goal was to become the best emergency air transportation membership service in the world. We got
58 | Scottsdale Airpark News September 2014
it right and over the last 25 years the SkyMed brand has thrived. In the end, it’s not what the company says about itself that is important; it’s really what our members say. When someone needs a lifesaving service when traveling and it happens exactly as it should it is life altering. Life is so precious and when something adverse does happen there is no place like home. We’ve made the ‘SkyMed TAKES YOU HOME’ slogan our mantra.” Member’s personal pocket books are also saved. Air evacuations with full-scale medical teams cost thousands of dollars per mile and payment is always upfront. Stress levels ramp up fast when physical pain is compounded by financial pain. With healthcare costs skyrocketing, being flown back to your own home hospital within your home network can be very costly. Besides, being stranded somewhere other than your hospital of choice should never be an option. By reading the fine print of any membership you’re considering and making the right choice, you can avoid it completely. “Travel and health insurance (including Medicare) have restrictions that can force unprepared consumers suffering from unexpected medical emergencies to remain in regional or foreign facilities until they are fit for travel,” said Klein. “If you’re ill or injured, home—or your hometown hospital—is where you and your family need to be. Should a critical illness or injury occur while traveling, that’s exactly where a SkyMed membership will take you.”
SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION
A quick look at the Medicare website confirms Klein’s statement. According to the site, in general, healthcare while traveling outside the U.S. isn’t covered. You pay 100% of the costs, in most cases, except in the very limited situations they outline on their page. This is why it’s important for travelers to not only purchase good travel health benefits, but to also ensure they add in a membership to a top-notch emergency air evacuation program, if it’s not included. Remember: these plans won’t cover your medical bills except in flight or on a ground ambulance, but if you already have good health insurance you may be covered until stabilized (which is a necessity) for an emergency air ambulance or medical escort flight. This is when an emergency medical evacuation membership becomes a very smart buy. According to an article on ConsumerReports.org, one in five Americans who take a trip out of the country suffers an illness or injury while abroad. In an emergency situation, medical evacuations can represent the highest possible loss while traveling. Basically the traveler has to weigh if that’s a financial and health risk they are willing to take. So what kind of travel protection do you need for your particular trip? There are different types of travel insurance policies and alternatives intended for different types of travelers and trips. Most travelers, though, will find they need at least one type of coverage—or more—for any given trip. The umbrella term “travel insurance” can cover a wide variety of events, though in emergencies it can fall short. “The cost of a program that can potentially save not only your life but also thousands of dollars in healthcare costs is more affordable than you think and certainly
more affordable than the alternative,” said Klein. “Short-term coverage for an individual for anywhere from 4 days starts as low as $9 a day, with annual individual plans starting as low as $222 for one year. Families can be covered for as little as $15 a day for the short-term and $444 for the year.” Visit skymed.com for complete information. The key is to determine what type of coverage is right for you. For some, a short trip with a fairly inexpensive ticket might not warrant travel insurance, but even a two-day trip one state over can be cut short because of an unexpected critical injury or illness. The key word here is “unexpected:” no one wants to think anything will happen, but
when it does, the last thing you need is to worry about how you’re going to get back to your home hospital and care providers and how much it’s going to cost you and your family. Whatever type of travel insurance you choose, make sure to include a medical evacuation membership—it always pays to travel with peace of mind. Many companies offer a variety of assistance and emergency medical evacuation memberships, but not all programs are created equal. SkyMed’s goal is to be the best and they put their Member Service Agreements on line and use a magnifying glass to encourage consumers to read the fine print of competitor services. Statistics Report of August 2013, the typical leisure visitor to Scottsdale is 58 years old. Anecdotally, we know that seniors support our arts and cultural institutions, patronize our restaurants and retail businesses, volunteer their time in numerous ways and sustain our faith organizations. They’ve created a market for upscale senior living communities that provide a continuum of aging care. As grandparents, they “attract” visits from their out-of-town children, and grandchildren too, boosting our year-round tourism industry. Here are a few tidbits of Scottsdale’s senior history: • In 1965, the city of Scottsdale purchased the 1920s-vintage Chesnutt

the first in the United States. On Sept. 30, 1973, communities throughout the state observed the first Grandparents Day, with then-Gov. Jack Williams issuing a proclamation urging citizens to honor their elders. The theme for the first Arizona Grandparents Day was “Give a Gift of Love – Adopt a Grandparent for the Day.” In Scottsdale, churches held special services and dinners to honor their senior congregants, and local schools held programs designed for students to invite grandma and grandpa. The city of Scottsdale sponsored a chamber music concert in the City Hall Kiva (the Center for the Arts didn’t open until 1975), a swing concert in the amphitheater behind City Hall, a dance in the City Hall Kiva and an arts and crafts display on Civic Center Plaza. Although the exact number of grandparents in Scottsdale is unknown, official 2012 demographic data tell us that 20.8 percent of Scottsdale’s population is 65 or older. While the city’s median age in 2012 was 46, there were some 46,000 residents over 65. According to the city’s Visitor

The former Chesnutt home became the city’s first Senior Center. Mrs. Laura Chesnutt was appointed to Scottsdale’s Senior Citizens Adult Center Committee, and served as the emcee at the first Grandparents Day ceremony at City Hall in September 1973. • In April 1972, senior citizens meeting at Chesnutt Park Senior Center declared the facility too small and inadequate to meet the needs of the senior community. They got the ball rolling for a brand new center. • Scottsdale’s Civic Center Senior Center opened Sept. 7, 1976, on the southwest corner of Second Street and Civic Center Plaza (now Drinkwater Boulevard). The center popularity is a tribute to the combined talents of city staff and volunteers in nearly all aspects of its operation.
Volunteer roles performed by the seniors themselves included serving as concierges; organizing clubs, classes and intergenerational programs, and getting involved with providing brokerage services such as home-delivered meals, pets on wheels, and tax preparation. When Scottsdale entered the computer age, seniors also helped each other develop computer, email and Internet skills. • Scottsdale’s Via Linda Senior Center opened in March 1995 in response to new demand for senior services in the growing area north of Shea Boulevard. Phase II of the Via Linda Senior Center was completed in 2002, doubling its size to 21,000 square feet and adding classrooms, computer room, library and fitness center. • The city of Scottsdale opened the new 37,500-square-foot Granite Reef Senior Center on Granite Reef Road just north of McDowell Road on Sept. 14,
2006. It replaced the outdated Civic Center Senior Center, and offers many amenities, from a large fitness center, to a multipurpose room with a stage and high-tech, audio-video equipment for programs of all kinds.

electric company, became Scottsdale’s second mayor in 1958 when he was 69 years old, serving until he was 73. In 1968, he and fellow senior Pansy Beauchamp organized the Scottsdale Historical Society to save the 1909-vintage Little Red Schoolhouse from destruction during an urban renewal project. Kimsey served as the Historical Society’s president for its first few years, saving not only the schoolhouse, but also restoring and preserving knowledge about Scottsdale’s early history. • Dr. Philip Schneider Sr. retired from his renowned OB/GYN practice in Illinois, and moved his family to Scottsdale in the late 1940s. He became the quintessential civic volunteer and downtown developer, credited with getting Scottsdale incorporated in 1951 (he chaired the petition committee), as well as building the first new apartments (The Adobe Apartments), a shopping center (Goldwater’s and other shops at Scottsdale Road and First Avenue), drive-in restaurant (Bimbo’s on the northeast corner of Scottsdale and Indian School roads) and other properties. He was also a key figure in the success of Scottsdale Baptist Hospital/Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, serving in many volunteer consulting and fundraising capacities. • In 1991, retired Salt River Project engineer Chet Andrews, an avid hiker, joined the board of the then-new McDowell Sonoran Land Trust (MSLT), and provided volunteer leadership to the organization credited with saving the McDowell Mountains from development. Jane Rau was a founding member of MSLT (now the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy) while in her 60s, and continues her role as an MSC volunteer today, a remarkable achievement, as she’s over 90 years young.
Legacy of Knowledge
Our most-senior residents have done much to share their knowledge
rememberwhen of Scottsdale area history with us. Paul Messinger writes a regular history column for the Scottsdale Republic, and turned many of his columns into a book. The Past Presidents Council of the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce—mostly comprised of retired business leaders—started and continues to organize the annual Scottsdale History Hall of Fame induction dinner. Joann Handley, a retired nurse, has been the volunteer director of the Scottsdale Historical Society Museum for many years. Retirees and seniors serve as volunteers at the Scottsdale Public Libraries, at Vista del Camino’s food bank and in the Scottsdale Unified School District; as docents at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, the Scottsdale Historical Society Museum and the Musical Instrument Museum; as stewards of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy; and as volunteers at Scottsdale Healthcare and Mayo Clinic. Scottsdale Charro “lifers’’— many in their 70s and 80s—continue to work at Spring Training games and participate in other activities that raise money for Scottsdale-area youth organizations and civic groups. Many over 65 serve on Scottsdale boards and commissions; others decide to run for political office. Programs like Arizona State University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and Encore University at Valley Presbyterian Church offer retirees and seniors the opportunity to continue to learn and enrich their lives. So here’s a virtual hug to all who are grandparents, seniors and retirees. We value your experience, your knowledge, your wisdom and your dedication to Scottsdale. Happy Grandparents Day! overnor Jan Brewer visited the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare recently for a ceremonial signing of House Bill 2078, which requires Arizona to have cost parity for oral anticancer drugs. Beginning Jan. 1, 2016, HB 2078, sponsored by state Rep. Heather Carter (LD15), requires health insurance companies with plans that cover intravenous (IV) and oral anticancer treatments to not discriminate against oral treatments by way of higher co-payments, deductibles or coinsurance. Often, many of the newest and most effective cancer treatments are only available in oral form. HB 2078 makes Arizona the 32nd state to offer cost parity for oral

anticancer drugs. “We owe medical professionals and researchers a great deal of gratitude; they are a growing part of our economy,” said Gov. Brewer. “I also thank the state legislature for getting the bill to my desk.” HB 2078 received extensive support from the Fair Access to Cancer Treatment Coalition and from legislators as the bill sailed through both the Arizona House and Senate, in committees and on the floor, with unanimous votes every step of the way. Other legislators that were key players in the passage of HB 2078 were Sen. Adam Driggs (LD28), Sen. Nancy Barto (LD15) and Sen. Anna Tovar (LD19). Rep. Heather Carter said, “I am proud of the support this bill received, it shows that putting the patient first is truly what matters. The fact that this may literally save lives is one of the many reasons representatives do the things we do.” Located in Scottsdale’s “Cure Corridor,” the Virginia G. Piper Cancer Center at Scottsdale Healthcare and Scottsdale Healthcare Research Institute are known throughout the southwest for personalized cancer care and an innovative combination of community oncology services and genomic cancer research in partnership with leading physicians and scientists. “Patients want convenient access to care and world class treatment, personalized care and results,” said Tom Sadvary, CEO, Scottsdale Lincoln Health Network. “The passage of HB 2078 helps create equity for access to these needed medications.” Numerous patient advocacy groups and medical providers came together to work with Rep. Carter in passing this legislation including: The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, International Myeloma Foundation, AZ Cancer Coalition, Scottsdale Healthcare, Ironwood Cancer and Research Centers, Latino Cancer Coalition, Banner Health, Oncology Nurses Society, ICAN – International Cancer Advocacy Network, TACOS – The Arizona Clinical Oncology Society, Arizona Oncology, ACCC, Komen (Central/Northern AZ Affiliate and Southern AZ Affiliate), North Country HealthCare, The National CML Society, Lymphoma Research Foundation, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Arizona Myeloma

SEPTEMBER Business Horoscope By Weiss Kelly, PMAFA Whether you’re a small-business owner or have other career aspirations, insights into how the planets influence your work month can help you plan for maximum performance and project success.
ARIES 3/21-4/19 You will have a lot going on this month, requiring detailed organization on your part. Make a list of who to contact, where to go and when to schedule your appointments. Full moon on the 9th can have you finishing a project. Find more efficient ways of doing things (new software, updating client lists). Agreements and making new contacts seem to fall into place by the third week. TAURUS 4/20-5/20 You can accomplish more this month, in spite of some frustrations that arise around the 12th. One-on-one challenges become less frequent as you gain the cooperation of others. Your patience pays off later in the month when a real estate or business matter is finalized. New moon on the 24th brings more harmonious conditions to your daily routine or work relationships. A favorable time for financial matters is the 24th-30th. GEMINI 5/21-6/21 Early September may prove to be frustrating. You’ll likely feel overloaded by all the details demanded by various projects. Prepare for unexpected schedule changes and criticism. Just address them one by one and know compromise is needed. The week of the 16th brings a more productive cycle. Use your sales knack in combination with your social know-how. Work gets better by the 24th. CANCER 6/22-7/22 This month is ideal for putting financial goals into play. Home- and family-related businesses are highlighted. Time management is emphasized the first three weeks. Put your powers of persuasion and salesmanship to good use. Any type of chaotic situation at work can be successfully restored by midmonth. Don’t lose contact with former friends, colleagues or group associations. Circle the 24th for connecting. LEO 7/23-8/22 Self-motivation and confidence return: this is a year of
opportunity (some call it luck), so take advantage of every offer and introduction (1st-22nd). Take special care with any spending or purchases—although you may have to spend money to make money. Keep on eye on your bank balance, and you can be operating in the black later in the month. Local social / business activates demand your attention the 22nd-30th. VIRGO 8/23-9/22 No other sign is as organized, productive and efficient. September’s emphasis is on all three abilities, as is only appropriate for your birthday. Timing will be key to successful results (and there will be plenty). The good news is that you can accomplish most of it the by the full moon on the 9th. The week of the 6th could bring some interferences or minor discord. LIBRA 9/23-10/22 You may have to cancel meetings or social events happening before the 13th. You can accomplish more by working alone, as a backlog demands your attention and followthrough. September can be professionally challenging yet promising. Prioritizing is required until the 15th, when you have free time to network and get back to what you do best. Your social calendar will be full of events that allow you to circulate with the right people (22nd-30th). SCORPIO 10/23-11/21 Saturn moving direct brings a release of restrictive situations that have been holding you back. You make great strides this month. A project or idea that’s been percolating surfaces on the 9th and can be completed by the 11th, freeing you of selfimposed limitations. If you are job hunting or ready to make a move, investigate before making a final decision; wait it out for two months, or better still, year’s end. Keep receipts handy and updated. SAGITTARIUS 11/22-12/21 You may be office bound the first week (too bad, because you work best by being on your
76 | Scottsdale Airpark News September 2014
own). Certain tasks require effort and time. September’s calendar is demanding, but it may not be that confining if you tackle one thing at a time. You catch up by the 14th by thinking outside the box. The week of the 15th activates related legalities. Travel is indicated for some by midmonth as well as some fun. CAPRICORN 12/22-1/19 Expect this month to be productive and profitable. You can accomplish more in less time. Best to arrange your most important meetings or presentation before the 23rd. Travel plans can be put into play by the third week. Expect interference or a minor disagreement to occur around the 24th. You can attract more clients through local group associations. It’s not what you know this month so much as who you know. AQUARIUS 1/20-2/18 Focus on preplanning. Though you may be dissatisfied with your present position or work assignments, this isn’t the time for a snap decision. Compile a list of pros and cons. Clarity will arrive with the new moon on the 9th. Frustrations can be replaced by opportunities through your social connections and events that begin to happen by the 23rd. You have a flair for connecting with the right people as the month draws to a close. PISCES 2/19-3/20 You’ve had positive reinforcement the last couple of months. Early September’s aspects may bring frustrations or demands when interacting with others. Expect additional work to be required on your part. A bit of compromising is necessary when reaching an agreement (1st-9th). This can work out to your advantage. Developments taking place in your field will be announced later in the month. For your new six- or 12-month business forecast on CD, email Weiss at weissastro@aol.com or call 480-600-7424.

Leaders

re leaders born or bred? It’s an age-old question. The answer is: both. Some individuals who come into this world are born to lead. They’re the “natural-born leaders” we hear so much about. Others start out more timid and fearful. They don’t see in themselves what we see in them so clearly. With the right guidance and training, however, people who are more timid and fearful can blossom right in front of your eyes, becoming some of the most powerful leaders you Scottsdale Location Only can imagine. An overwhelming number of people First time clients only. Expires 1/31/13 lack self-confidence, self-esteem or decisiveness—the qualities that natural-born leaders seem to be blessed with from the get-go. How do they develop leadership North Scottsdale location only. skills that have not been brought to the Expires 9/30/14 surface for the world to see? And how do born leaders continue to challenge themselves, sharpening their skills to become even better, kinder and more empowering to those around them? Leadership is a skill, but it's also a quality and a characteristic. What we do with it is ultimately up to us. It is something that requires nurturing and cultivation to become tangible and recognizable. The great news is that we all have the same potential. We all have the ability to choose to lead others and, most important, ourselves. "But how?" you might ask. There are classes and trainings, coaches and mentors, and books and videos. experiential skills and tools that you can use in everyday life. And the best part? What you experience stays with you. The lessons and techniques that you obtain last you for a lifetime. Scottsdale-based U & Improved is an example of an organization that offers immersion-style trainings that bring out the best in people and companies. Our trainings lead people through a series of challenges and processes that allow them to practice leadership behaviors vs. just talking about it. We don't talk about living with passion and enthusiasm. We practice it! The best part of developing yourself as a leader is that it positively affects and impacts every area of your life, including your relationships, the way you communicate with others, the way you carry yourself, the way you speak, and the way you simply "show up" in this world. If you haven't given yourself the opportunity to shine, why not? If you haven’t brought out of the best in those around you, at home or at work, how come? The best investment of time and money you can ever make is in yourself and in those you care about. You deserve to live your best life. So what better day to begin your best life than today? Go out there and take the time to develop yourself and your teams. Read that book. Go to that seminar. Take that class. Just say "yes!" to you. You don’t have to be born with leadership skills or characteristics. You just have to uncover what you have always had inside and bring it to the surface for the world to see. Jodi Low is president and founder of U & Improved, a Scottsdale-based leadership training organization that provides personal and professional development programs through heart-based leadership and powerful, performance-based trainings.
