As a part of the second wave of over 40 Republicans for Kelly coalition endorsements, Turner was joined by Apache Junction Mayor Chip Wilson and CEO of Arizona Bankers Association Paul Hickman at the Arizona State Capitol. This almost doubled the nearly 50 business owners, elected officials, community leaders and veterans who endorsed Kelly in July prior to the August Republican primary.

“I’ve heard him say that, in NASA and in the Navy, the way you solve the problem is by getting everybody together and working together toward a common goal,” Turner said. “Senator Kelly took that philosophy with him to the U.S. Senate. It works across the aisle, and it has done great wonders for us. It not only leaves us with a good impression of how servants should serve, but it also delivers results.”

“The city never entered into a naming rights agreement with the Gila River Tribal Nation or the casino,” Phelps said. “That was between the Coyotes and them. It had been known all along, when we made the decision not to renew with the Coyotes, that we will be negotiating this agreement.” BY SUMMER AGUIRRE Glendale Star Staff Writer Glendale City Councilmember Bart Turner and other Arizona figures addressed their endorsement of Mark Kelly for re-election to the U.S. Senate during a press conference on Aug. 22.

Turner, Wilson and Hickman’s endorsements commended Kelly’s understanding of the state’s problems and dedication to creating solutions that best benefit Arizona communities. They also praised his bipartisanship, as a statement said he is repeatedly ranked one of the Senate’s most bipartisan members.

Formerly known as Gila River Arena, the city-owned arena in the Westgate Entertainment District has a new name — Desert Diamond Arena.

According to Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps, the discussions between the city of Glendale, ASM Global and Desert Diamond Casinos had been going on over the last five or six months. It got more serious as of June 30, however, when the Coyotes moved out of the arena. The existing naming rights deal, Phelps said, was negotiated entirely by the Coyotes. So, after the team moved out, the city had the opportunity to strike its own deal.

“I’m so grateful for the broad coalition of Arizonans who understand that we can accomplish more for this state if we work together,” Kelly said in a statement. “That’s exactly what I do every day in the Senate, where I focus on putting Arizona first — not any political party. I’m proud of the growing support from Republicans, Independents and Democrats backing this campaign as we move full speed ahead through the next 78 days.”

Kelly’s other endeavors include the provision of COVID-19 relief for small and large businesses throughout Arizona. He assisted in the implementation of a bipartisan infrastructure law to repair roads and bridges to help local residents receive benefits and tax dollars from federal taxes. Turner acknowledged the fact that Kelly has made these changes in just two years. He sees how much more can be accomplished going forward if he were re-elected.

This will connect Glendale, Peoria and Phoenix with a freshwater system of pipelines allowing the cities to share water on a temporary basis. Turner said this is “crucially important” in the occurrence of a water shortage, line break accident or water treatment plant breakdown.

“I can’t imagine that we could pick out a partner better than somebody who already has a significant financial investment literally within a mile of the arena,” he said. “This, to me, is the absolute best-case scenario that we could come up with.”

Phelps said when he started his position as city manager six years ago, he stressed the importance of “selecting really quality partners.” With Desert Diamond, he feels as though the city has“Whatone. I love about Desert Diamond is that every time I would be in a meeting with them as the (naming rights) negotiations continued, was they always referenced back the ideas they have about ways they can help Tanger Outlets, the way they can help the hotels that are in the area and the way they could benefit the arena,” Phelps said.

“We believe the Westgate Entertainment District will not only be the largest and most successful entertainment district in the state of Arizona, but I think it will be recognized as one of the preeminent entertainment districts in the entire southwest United States,” Phelps said.

The event is first come, first served, and an appointment is not necessary. Slade advises those interested to arrive as early as possible to ensure themselves to be seen.

“We just think that all of these things really reinforce the business decision that we made a year ago to part ways with the Arizona Coyotes,” he said. “(The naming rights deal) is yet just one more validator of the business decision that we made.”

BY JORDAN ROGERS Glendale Star Staff Writer Risas Dental and Braces is once again offering free dental treatments for the community through its annual Labor of Love event slated for Monday, Sept. 5. Among its 22 participating locations, Risas Dental has 13 locations in the Valley and another two in Tucson. The four-hour event will run from 8 a.m. to noon.Dr. Troy Slade, who works at the Maryvale location in Glendale, said he is looking forward to giving back to the community.

“The fulfillment that I get from doing this is nothing compared to anything that I have ever experienced,” Slade said. “I just feel connected to the people that I serve with. It makes me enjoy the days that I’m working on a normal day more because I feel more connected to the community.

“This factors in well with our philosophy of picking out a good partner with whom you share mutual self-interest, and you can do really great things goingDespiteforward.”just being a 2-mile square area, Phelps said the Westgate Entertainment District currently has $1.5 billion in private investments either presently under construction or soon to be under construction. With the added naming rights deal with Desert Diamond Casinos, he sees a bright future for the entertainment district.

For Slade, community ties are an important part of Risas Dental’s business model. On top of that, he said the company’s CEO, Jeff Adams, has the “biggest philanthropic hearts that you could ever meet.” That mindset trickles down to the staff among all Risas Dental’s employees.

Risas Dental and Braces gives back to community

This year, patients can once again choose from one of the four following free treatments: cleanings, fillings, extractions, or exams and X-Rays. This year, however, Risas Dental will also offer free orthodontic consultations for any patients interested in braces or clear“Thisaligners.also gives people a chance to see the services that we provide,” Slade said. “We know that COVID-19, for some people, has caused some economic struggles — job losses or loss of insurance — and I think, more than anything, we want people to know that we’re out there and that we’re there to support them. We want to be there for you and help where we can.”

“It’s a first-come, first-served basis, so just come in,” he said. “Just get in line, and we’ll take care of you.”

“That really shows their level of long-term commitment back into the entertainment district,” he said.

A big name in Arizona, Desert Diamond Casinos & Entertainment has three locations in Southern Arizona — Tucson, Sahuarita and Why — and another one in Glendale.

“It helps us to connect with the community, to feel a part of the community, (get) a sense of community, which I think we’re all in some ways looking for.”This year will be the 11th one for the Labor of Love event, and Slade said the total dollar amount to have been given away through the Labor of Love event is close to $9 million since its first year.

“Even through the COVID pandemic, just the way that we’re set up to treat our community as a lower cost dentistry, we’ve been successful for all four years,” he said.

“As exciting as the Westgate Entertainment District is today, you haven’t seen anything yet. Over the next two or three years, it’s really going to transform into something that is almost unrecognizable if you haven’t been in Glendale for four or five years.”

“I see this being just a partnership that is going to really be one of those benchmark moments in the growth of the (Westgate) Entertainment District,” heWhileadded.there were several interested parties in the naming rights to the arena, Phelps said Desert Diamond was the right choice, as “they are so excited about the long-term health and growth and expansion of the entertainment district.”“Ibelieve they’re going to add tremendous financial value to the overall district,” he added. “I think that’s why, from a city perspective, we were so excited when this was able to come to completion. It’s more than just having somebody whose name is on the building.“We have an active partner, who is fully invested financially, and otherwise, into this area, and they have a desire to see it grow.”

Continuing the post-Coyotes era at Westgate, Phelps sees this as a positive way to continue turning the page.

“I would say that there’s a fundamental belief among all our doctors that we need to give to grow,” Slade said. “Part of giving is opening your heart, and the more open we are, we believe the more we will be able to grow and reach more people in the community that need help.”

Phelps said most naming rights deals run seven or eight years, but the deal with Desert Diamond runs for the next 10 years — with a renewal option for another 10 years after that.

Slade has been with Risas Dental for the last four years. He said the event has grown in participation every year.

8 e Glendale StarNEWS September 1, 2022

The timing of this deal could not have come at a better time. Between the arena recently reporting its most successful non-hockey revenue earnings year to date and some major reinvestments coming to the arena, Phelps knows the arena has some serious momentum.

It’s all the response I can muster anymore for the predictable screeching that arises whenever the government — local, state or federal — does anything. Depending on the decision maker, whether it’s a MAGA hat Trump acolyte or someone who worships at the altar of Old Joe Santa of the left, forever giving away cash, record inflation be damned, it’s yet another moment to exhort or complain, so long as you root, root, root for the home team.

And, at the top, what most nutritionists in the early ’90s considered the “bottom feeders” among consumables: fats, sweets and oils … with the admonition to “use sparingly.”

Actually, “official” recognition of the food pyramid did not occur until 1992. That’s when the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced its own version, alternatively called the “Food Guide Pyramid” or the “Eating Right Pyramid.”

BY J.D. HAYWORTH Glendale Star Columnist Whatever the history of ancient Egypt, there’s one “pyramid” that’s not shrouded in mystery. It’s the “food pyramid,” which attracted quite a bit of controversy following its “construction.”

Now, “My Plate” offers official federal food guidance … and has for over a decade.Meantime, everyday Americans seem to encounter new “nutritional studies” — well, everyday. That includes one from the University of Michigan that was curiously released one month after Independence Day. Did you enjoy a hot dog on July Fourth? An article in the Aug. 4 edition of The US Sun claims you might have cut more than a half-hour from your

‘4D vision’: Diagrams, delusions, diets and demise SEE HAYWORTH PAGE 12 SEE LEIBOWITZ PAGE 12

Baby boomers can be forgiven if they carry a vague recollection of this dietary diagram from the scratchy, sprocket threaded, 16 millimeter monochromatic motion pictures featured during their school days so long ago.

Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell was apoplectic: “President Biden’s student loan socialism is a slap in the face to every family who sacrificed to save for college, every graduate who paid their debt, and every American who chose a certain career path or volunteered to serve in our armed forces in order to avoid taking on debt. This policy is astonishingly unfair.”

My reaction? It was what kids today would abbreviate as “SMH,” for shaking my head.

The penultimate placements belonged to milk, cheese and yogurt on one side and meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts on the other … with both groupings listing suggested servings of two to three daily.

Critics were unsparing in their scorn. The most common complaint dealt with style as well as substance. Americans associate success with the top … not the bottom. Accordingly, the advice of the agriculture department was to “invert the pyramid.” (Sound familiar?) Adding “fat to the fire” was a failure to recognize research extolling the benefits of unsaturated fats in weight loss, as well the lowering of blood sugar and cholesterol levels. But blood pressure levels increased on the banks of the Potomac with accusations of “lactose tolerance” — allegations that the dairy lobby “milked” the benefits of the pyramid with larger visuals that made their products easier to USDArecognize.bureaucrats recognized they had created problems with the pyramid, but like most government workers, they were slow to embrace needed changes. Finally, in 2011, the pyramid transmogrified into a “personalized plate.”

Of course, Washington being Washington, that development was not met with widespread unanimity … but at least the disagreements about “eating right” didn’t break down along the traditional political lines of left versus right. Instead, disputes developed over the federal approach to nutritional “multilevel marketing.”TheUSDA was all about inclusion at the base of the pyramid, grouping bread, cereal, rice and pasta together, suggesting six to 11 daily servings. On the next level, vegetables and fruits shared elevated status, with guidance of three to five servings of veggies and two to four helpings of fruit.

BY DAVID LEIBOWITZ Glendale Star Columnist Early Aug. 24, President Joe Biden doddered to the White House microphone and announced the forgiveness of an estimated $300 billion in student loan debt. The plan, should it survive court challenges, will wave a magic wand at $10,000 in debt for borrowers making less than $125,000 a year and up to $20,000 for Pell grant recipients.

Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren nearly broke both hands applauding Biden: “This is one of the biggest acts of consumer debt relief in American history, and it will directly help hardworking people who borrowed money to go to school because they didn’t come from a family that could write a big check.”

Here’s a thought that borrows another social media acronym: How about you all STFU and spare the rest of us your talking points? The rest of us being the approximately 250 million Americans not registered as Republicans or Democrats and/or the 150 million Americans who didn’t vote for either Biden or Donald Trump in 2020. Why such hard feelings? It’s the glaringInhypocrisy.2008,when Lehman Brothers, AIG and Wall Street irresponsibility crashed the American economy, McConnell led the way on a $700 billion bailout of the rich, which he lauded as “one of the finest moments in the history of the Senate.” And Warren, who’s rarely met a government giveaway she didn’t like, didn’t celebrate President Trump’s $2 trillion CARES Act spending spree, which included $500 billion in checks for individuals and $350 billion in Paycheck Protection Program loans to business owners — including all sorts of millionaires who, uh, maybe didn’t need the cash. After a day of back and forth in the media — and a few text messages from Student debt giveaway underscores bigger problem

friends celebrating or attacking Biden’s decision — I found myself transfixed by a moment that crystallizes the entire argument.Toward the end of Biden’s 20 minutes of self-congratulation, a reporter shouted a reasonable question at the man:“Is this unfair to people who paid their student loans or chose not to take outBiden, loans?”almost to the door, turned back to deliver a one-liner. “Is it fair to people who, in fact, do not own multi-billion-dollar businesses if they see one of these guys getting all the tax breaks? Is that fair? What do you think?”

Social media helped 2 businesses survive the pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a challenge for small businesses that previously relied solely on in-person interactions. But thanks to a different kind of viral experience, two Valley businesses aren’t just surviving, they’re thriving. Their secret? TikTok, the social media app that hosts short-form videos ranging from 15 seconds to 10Blancaminutes.Ulloa and Allie Dziewulski founded their Goodyear event rental company in March 2020, just before the pandemic was declared. Jump Into Bliss focuses on bounce houses for high-end events for children and adults, including weddings and bachelorette parties. With stay-in-place orders in effect, Ulloa and Dziewulski had little to do but engage with social media, and after a few months, they focused their marketing strategy on social media, including TikTok. They started by experimenting with various trends on the app. “When we first started, our views were like one to 100 if we were lucky,” Ulloa said. “Then one day we woke up and we had a video hit a million views.” That video — a 30-second time lapse of a bounce house being set up — went viral four months after Ulloa and Dziewulski started on TikTok.Atthe start of the pandemic, they were getting almost no business, but after the video, inquiries came in daily. Now, they’re fully booked through October 2023.

Social media use has become more common across all demographics, said Liesel Sharabi, an assistant professor at Arizona State University’s Hugh Downs School of Human Communication who primarily studies the social uses of “That’stechnology.especially true during the pandemic because people were spending a lot of time at home,” Sharabi said. “They were feeling isolated. They were on their phones and on their computers. We saw a lot of people really relying on social media; it’s their prime way of communicating with the people that couldn’t see face to face on a daily basis.” With this increase in social media use, especially during the pandemic, Sharabi said it afforded many businesses some “really unique marketing opportunities.”Accordingto Business of Apps, TikTok had 1.2 billion users in the final quarter of 2021 and is expected to hit 1.8 billion by the end of 2022.

Sidowski said she has worked with several other businesses she found on TikTok, but not all her experiences were positive. That’s why she researches companies on other platforms. She has rented bounce houses from Jump Into Bliss for four events: a bachelorette party, a friend’s birthday party, and two parties for her children.

“It’s been awesome just watching them expand so much,” Sidowski said. “It seems like they are really just taking the party planning by storm.”

Kelsey Sidowski, who lives in the West Valley, found Jump Into Bliss on TikTok. Looking to rent a bounce house for her son’s 10th birthday, she researched its other social media accounts to determine whether the business was legitimate.

“That was like the happiest I’d ever seen her,” he said. “And then she passed a week later. So I’m happy I got to make her proud, or smile, before it happened.”

BY ASHLEY STEVENS Cronkite News

He rarely has a chance to sit around these days. The big tackle started practice at 7 a.m., and after an hourlong practice, the Mountain Ridge players completed their final lifting session before heading off to camp. Then, Doost works as a busboy at a local restaurant.“I’mtired,” he said. Soon, he will be focused on his senior season and preparing to play for Northwestern, which Doost determined offered the best combination of football and academics for him. He was sold after his campus visit with his“Afather.couple of the commits there wanted to eat lunch with me,” Doost said. “So I told my dad, ‘I’m going to go. Are you going to be OK?’ He was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll just be on my phone.’ “I turned around and like three coaches are sitting by my dad eating withDoosthim.”made quick connections to the program, which has received three commitments from Arizona high school players in the 2023 recruiting class, and with Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald.

“I think I’ve moved past the motivation part,” Doost said. “It’s more my mom would be proud to see what I’m doing right now.” Shortly before his mom passed, Arizona State offered Doost his first Power Five scholarship. Another 17 would follow before he settled on Northwestern after visiting the school’s Evanston, Illinois, campus with his father.

“He’s that guy that wants to lead in a positive manner and bring people to the good side, so to speak, rather than fall into bad habits and do things that are going to negatively impact them.”

But Doost does have one soft spot. It’s for his mom. Doost has pinned a tweet on his Twitter page from his commitment to Northwestern, thanking his mother, Siboné Xochihua-Doost, who passed away in April 2021. He wears a bracelet with her name engraved on the outside and “Remember My Beautiful Mom” etched inside. He often tags social media posts with #T1FM – “This 1 is For Mom.”

Now, he’s trying to set the example for his teammates at Mountain Ridge. It’s a quiet leadership style. After setting his personal record by squatting 600 pounds with relative ease, Doost racked the sagging barbell, turned to teammate Christian Aguilar and asked, “Was that low enough?”Doost remained low key throughout his workout, only asking his teammates for a spot when he lifted, or for feedback about his“Itechnique.feellike having all those eyes (on me) is like a responsibility to me, because if I was just sitting down, then I’d be letting down the people who look up to me,” he said.

“It was a problem with her heart,” Doost said. “She always had problems with blood pressure, so she knew it was going to happen.” He recalls hearing his mother shouting at him from the stands, “Get your blocks!”“Shewas very loud,” he said. That voice still echoes in everything Doost does, on and off the field.

It’s something that doesn’t surprise Mountain Ridge coach Doug Madoski.“I told every coach who asked me, ‘What’s the secret to landing this kid? You got to have a relationship with him.’” Madoski said. “He’s a relationshipThosekid.” relationships at Mountain Ridge helped Doost understand his own potential and work even harder. During his time there, Madoski said he has gone from just blending in during meetings and on the field to honing his skill sets and leading by example.“Ithink for him, he sees that, ‘These eyes are on me,’” Madoski said. “He wants to inspire other people (and say) that, ‘When I walked into Mountain Ridge High School, I was just like you. I might have been a little bit taller, a little bit heavier, whatever, but I was just like you. I worked really hard, and because I work so hard, I’ve got these opportunities.’

Doost believes there are some similarities between the atmosphere at Mountain Ridge and what he experienced during his visit to Northwestern.

“I like being able to inspire my teammates, make them want to push more, seeing them watch me in awe doing that squat,” Doost said. “That makes me feel good. I feel like at (Northwestern), that’s how they treated me.”

While his mom wasn’t present for the rest of those scholarship offers, Doost already knew the pride that she had in him because of the ASU offer.

“She wouldn’t want me to sit on my ass, so I try to do a lot when I can,” he said. “She did a lot to prevent (her death). She lost weight, and she worked out a lot.”

As a sophomore, Doost lined up as an offensive tackle with eight other players from his high school class.

Doost entered his senior season with the intention to move back to tackle, his preferred position. But Madoski and his staff made him earn the job. Before spring football, everyone believed Doost would start at offensive tackle after committing to the weight room and being the most sought after athlete on the team. Ziegler and Madoski wanted to challenge him, though. Ziegler told Doost he was going to play guard as a test.

But during Doost’s junior year, Madoski and Mountain Ridge offensive coordinator

Once high school ball is over, Doost will leave Arizona’s warmth for the big chill of Big Ten territory. Madoski believes he’ll make the adjustment to the weather and Big Ten football.

Coming off of a 2021 state playoff season, Mountain Ridge is preparing for the 6A Desert Valley Region race with a heavy-hitting senior class. Doost is back at tackle, playing his final high school season and preparing to move on to the Big Ten with added confidence — and the rather loud voice of an angel in his ear.

“I think that he is better prepared for that than a lot of guys will be,” he said. “I think that just him working through some of that same process here at Ridge, it’s put him in a position where he has the blueprint now to be able to do it at Northwestern.”

• Higher motivation to work.

Hiring signs are everywhere. The pandemic and other economic issues have forced organizations to be creative with their hiring efforts.

BY OneBLANTONMADISONStepBeyond P eople tiesdisabili-withhave long been excludedrepresentedunder-orfrom the workforce based on employers’ low expectations and prejudiced bias about abilities. As CEO of an Arizona-based organization that promotes opportunity and inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities, I can tell you that things are looking up, but there is still more to do. We recently celebrated the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act — a step that took a giant leap in recognizing the abilities and possibilities of individuals with a disability.

Individuals with disabilities are an untapped target market for open positions

Individuals who have disabilities want to be active contributors to their communities and achieve their highest level of self-reliance.

There are many benefits of hiring people with disabilities. Some of the reasons may surprise you. Increase your profit margin Many studies cite statistics about businesses that actively seek to employ people with disabilities outperform companies that do not. The results found that revenues, net income and profit margins increased. They also show that employers embracing disability saw increased employee retention.

• Lower employee turnover.

I can tell you that individuals who have disabilities often look at problems differently and bring innovative thinking to the home and workplace.

For that reason, my organization developed several unique approaches that not only assist these individuals in fulfilling their dreams of attaining meaningful employment but also ensure employers receive valuable employees. Our pre-vocational and vocational programs provide participants with the necessary training and support to enter the workforce.

• Perform more consistently. And here are a few advantages of hiring people with disabilities:

• Very loyal to their employer.

• Friendlier dealings with customers.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1.4 million adults in Arizona have a disability. That’s 24%, or 1 in 4 adults. There is potentially a largely untapped talent pool of 1.4 million people with diverse strengths, leadership styles and ways of thinking.

• Overall positive work environment.

Tax benefits

According to the Arizona Department of Economic Security, an organization that hires someone who has a disability may qualify for the Disabled Access Credit, Barrier Removal Tax Credit Deduction and Work Opportunity Tax Credit. There are many reasons to consider hiring someone with a disability — the above focuses on how their presence affects the bottom line. But, the reasons are nothing to how it will make you feel and the joy it will bring to your heart. Madison Blanton is CEO of Arizona-based One Step Beyond, a leading provider of comprehensive programming and services for adults who have intellectual disabilities. • Lower absenteeism rates.

Murray attributes the drop to a sharp uptick in the number of voice providers that have installed STIR/SHAKEN, an FCC-required technology that lets consumers see whether a call is legitimate or not. While the program got off to a relatively slow start, with 536 companies using it as of last June, the number has since increased to 1,932 phone service providers.

“Like I said, even one robocall a day is way too many. ” And people are still getting way too many.YouMail data shows that while overall robocalls have fluctuated over the past year, they have been largely unchanged. It said that robocalls nationally went from 4.2 billion in July 2021 to 4.3 billion in June 2022. “Robocalls are a real challenge for me right now,” said Stephan Viehweg, an Indiana resident who recently visited Washington. “We have two elders in our family that require extra

The report said 1,002 smaller providers have claimed an exemption from the STIR/ SHAKEN requirement and another 3,062 have not installed it or are using their own technology that might not be as“Weeffective.don’t want to pretend like the robocall problem is going away, because it’s definitely not,” she said.

Federal regulations aimed at blocking robocalls appear to have had some effect over the past year, but robotexts have skyrocketed in their place, according to a recent report from the Arizona Public Interest Research Group.

“The bad guys are going to find another way to try and get us,” said Teresa Murray, director of the consumer watchdog office for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

New FCC regulations may have led to a reduction in robocalls over the past year, but Arizonans are still getting millions of such calls a day. And spam texts have skyrocketed during the same period, according to advocates, who say phone companies can do more. (Genesis Sandoval/Cronkite News)

The PIRG report said the number of phone companies that have installed spam-blocking technology since it was required last year by the Federal Communications Commission has quadrupled, and the number of spam robocalls appears to have fallen by 47% in thatButperiod.robocalling overall has little changed in that time — and is actually up slightly in the U.S. and Arizona — while automated text messages nationwide jumped from 1 billion last July to 12 billion in June. In Arizona, robotexts almost tripled since January, to 565 million in June, according to RoboKiller, a spam-blocking tech company. To experts, this is no surprise at all.

The report released last month by the ArizonaPIRG Education Fund said the number of spam robocalls in the U.S. fell 47% over the last year, from about 2.1 billion a month to 1.1 billion, citing data from YouMail, a robocall blocking firm that tracks robocall traffic.

“Every day you hear of cases where people have been scammed of hundreds and thousands of dollars,” Murray

“By banding together, pooling their resources, they are not like each of them doing separate investigations about the same robocall operation they suspect is doing bad things,” Murray said. While the FCC has investigative power, states have more law enforcement authority. In the meantime, she said, consumers need to keep their guard up.

While robocalls have more or less flattened out under the new regulations, robotexts have exploded over the past year, because the FCC rules do not specifically regulate text messages, the PIRG report said. It’s more than just a nuisance: Those text messages can pose the same threat as the calls of harming consumers through scams. Those can include claims of fake auto warranties, medical or insurance records, package deliveries and more that attempt to steal consumers’ personal information or get them to hand over cash.

“The album seems to be really well accepted,” he said. “We’re going to showcase some of the songs from the new record, obviously. But we’re going to play all of the classics that people still love all these years later. It’s a brand-new live show with new screen footage. It’s a really great show.”

“I think it’s because, when we started, we had so many different influences. We were listening to Kraftwerk, New York disco, the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols and Chic. We were very lucky to be forming at a time when there was a lot of great, different forms of music.

“We’re huge fans of his, so it was wonderful to work with him. He’s such a big part of our DNA. I think it was great to have the original article in the room with us. It was great to work with Mike Gaston. He’s another legend who played on great Bowie records.”

“It was great working with Graham,” Taylor said.

“He’s a great DJ, and he wanted to capture that groove that John and I have,” Taylor said of Alkan. The decision is a rarity in Duran Duran’s record-making world that is more spontaneous than planned.

After the tour ends, on Nov. 5, Duran Duran will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Taylor is looking forward to it. The ceremony is “rumored” — according to Taylor — to include Andy Taylor and Cuccurullo.

“I think that worked its way into the DNA of the band. So, when we sit down and write, we can really go down any of those paths.”

“We literally just go into the room, and we let the universe take us down whichever path it wants to take us,” Taylor said.

“It was a tough time, but I think it really helped us deliver a great record,” Taylor added. That record will be reflected in the live show as well. But Taylor said Duran Duran is cognizant of fans’ request of a hit-driven set.

Alkan is a fan of Duran Duran’s early 12-inch records where John and Roger laid down grooves organically.

“They’re inductees, so we thought it would be right and proper to invite them to come and play with us,” he said. “So that’s going to be interesting.”

“God bless (former guitarists) Andy (Taylor) and Warren (Cuccurullo) and Dom Brown, who plays with us now. But it was really interesting to have somebody come into the room from the get-go, from the start of the writing sessions, because we’ve not had that for a while. It was really creative, and it changed the shape of the record as well.”Coxon was great to work with, but Taylor calls Moroder “the real legend.”

Duran Duran: From small club to royal stage

“Future Past” was recorded and written during the lockdown and, with “very little else going on in our world, we couldn’t travel, we couldn’t even go out for dinner together.” The energy was focused on making the record.

Duran Duran has had plenty of “pinch-me” moments in the last 44 years. But drummer Roger Taylor said performing at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June was near the top.“It was a huge event for us,” Taylor said. “To be chosen for an event that is put on by the royal family is a pinch-yourself moment. “We’re this little band that was created in this little club in Birmingham in a back room all those years ago. Fast forward and we’re playing for the royal family. It’s an incredible honor. Also, we have an emotional attachment because (Princess) Diana was a big fan of the band. So, it felt natural for us to be there.”Fans who saw the concert in person or on U.S. television saw a sneak peek of Duran Duran’s tour, which comes to the Footprint Center at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7. The title of Duran Duran’s newest album, “Future Past,” tells the whole story. For its 15th collection, Duran Duran hearkened back to the Roger Taylor and bassist John Taylor heavy rhythm section. Producer Erol Alkan instigated that, he said. “The new album was about reclaiming our old sound a little bit more,” Taylor“We’vesaid.been down quite a few different avenues over the years. We’ve gone down the electronic avenue. We’ve gone down the avenue where we programmed a lot more. This is definitely more about organic playing.”

Duran Duran has never been absolutely success driven either, Taylor added. The mainstay quartet — Taylor, singer Simon LeBon, bassist John Taylor and keyboardist Nick Rhodes — doesn’t feel the need to remake “Rio” to return to Top 40 radio, either. “We’ve always done what we’ve felt like doing,” Taylor said. “If it’s commercially successful, amazing. But that’s never been the driving factor behindAlongus.”with Alkan, “Future Past” was produced by Italian film composer, songwriter and the “Father of Disco” Giorgio Moroder, while former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon played guitars on each song.

L et me introduce you to a couple you may have heard about from your Sunday school days. The couple was once the king and queen of Israel. Their names were Ahab and Jezebel. Most likely, you have heard about Jezebel. You wouldn’t have wanted to get on her wrong side. She was large and in charge even though her husband, Ahab, was the king of Israel. Jezebel means brazen, shameless or morally unrestrained without cohabitation. Her calling card would say, “Whether right or wrong, I get what I want.”Here’s an incident that happened years ago. King Ahab, prone to childlike tantrums and coveting, saw a vineyard he wanted for a vegetable garden near his palace. Ahab’s problem was the vineyard was owned by a citizen named Naboth. So Ahab offered to buy the vineyard. But Naboth replied, “The Lord forbid I should give you the inheritance of my ancestors.”Ahab went home angry, sulking, refusing to eat. Jezebel asked Ahab why he was in a bad mood. Ahab told her what had happened. Jezebel responded, “Is this how you act as king over Israel? Get up and eat! Cheer up. I’ll get you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.” And get the vineyard, Jezebel did. Jezebel hired two “scoundrels” to lie and testify Naboth had cursed God and the king. So, the hired hands took Naboth outside the city and stoned him to death. Notice the pattern; lies, false witnesses, hired crowds and taking away property. I guess whatever “Lola wants, Lola gets” — for a while. There’s a fundamental difference between weakness and wickedness. Ahab had fleshly ego-driven weaknesses. Jezebel was wicked. Ahab had an issue of the head. Jezebel had an issue of the heart. Ahab was clueless and spoiled. Jezebel was intentional and diabolical. Note that Ahabs and Jezebels are a type, not a gender. This example isn’t a male-female issue. There were heaps of Jezebel kings in Israel’s past. In this case, Ahab’s weakness was Jezebel’s passport into controlling a nation. Jezebel types look for weak people like Ahab to influence and control. You can’t be a puppeteer if you don’t have a puppet. In one sense, each one empowered the other. Ahab’s self-absorption, spoiled childish ways, and slothfulness created space for Jezebel’s hubris and ambition. The wickedness in her ruled Israel through Ahab’s weakness. Ahab gave his authority or right to govern to Jezebel, and Jezebel gladly tookTogether,it. they ruled Israel for years. God is patient, even with weak kings and wicked queens for a while. God gave them, as he gives us, every chance to make a turn and change for the better. But just because God is patient doesn’t mean God condones intentional dysfunctional behavior forever. At the appointed time, God sent a prophet named Elijah to make the king and queen aware their actions have consequences. Why did God prophetically warn them? Because the king and queen’s issues were hurting themselves, their people and the nation. That’s called love in action. King Ahab got upset (again) that God’s message through Elijah was stopping him from getting his way all the time. Jezebel flew into a rage (again). How dare Elijah or God curtail Ahab and Jezebel’s ambitions?

Revelation 2:19. That’s love. Consider this, leaders and people aren’t punished for their mistakes. Leaders and people are punished by their mistakes.

You don’t challenge the actions and attitudes of people like Jezebel without creating ramifications of rage. Jezebel types don’t get even. They get revenge. Puppeteers and people “without cohabitation” don’t like it when someone upsets their puppet. Sometimes we think someone is wicked when they have a weakness. We see this in the play called “Wicked.” Conversely, we assume someone is weak when they are cruel. Don’t be too quick to judge. Learn to discern. Watch their example. Watch who is attracted to them and who is repelled by them. Is what they do primarily for your good or their desire? In other words, who’s their daddy?

I’m not being harsh or hardhearted here. On the contrary, this article is exhortation and encouragement. I’m just trying to make us aware of real life. We all have weaknesses, but some have just a bit more weaknesses than others. That could be dangerous, whoever we are. Why? Because the more weaknesses we have, the more desirable we are for weak or even wicked people who need more vulnerable people to advance their agenda. Don’t run from God to the “daddy” of weakness or wickedness. Instead, run to God, the daddy of wellness. Transform your weakness or your wickedness into wellness. Be empowered for life abundantly. Then you will know “what’s your name” (it’s not weakness or wickedness) and “who’s your daddy.” God’s not dead; God’s dad.God loves you, and he approved this message.

The problem with any nation, society or community is it takes an Ahab to create a Jezebel. The character of the king or queen permeates the kingdom. Israel languished and mourned because of Ahab’s head and Jezebel’s heart for a while. But people like Ahab and Jezebel generally don’t end very well. These two “experts” eventually became ex-spurts… shooting stars that were bright for a moment and then quickly burnt up. God let the dogsLetout.me quote a Bible verse about Jezebel that will surprise you. It’s Jesus talking about Jezebel. “And I gave her time to change directions, but she has no intention of changing directions…”
