Disabled ﬁreﬁghter’s wife set to be honored

Helping One Woman Goodyear will honor Kimberly on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at The Wigwam’s Sachem Ballroom, 300 E. Wigwam Boulevard, Litchﬁeld Park.

Founded in Fresno, California, Helping One Woman supports “one woman at a time move forward on her journey through times of devastating trouble and loss.”

Each Helping One Woman chapter honors a recipient each month whose name is drawn from nominations submitted by women in attendance and randomly selected at the previous month’s dinner.

The South Scottsdale resident followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a nurse. Her instincts kicked in when her 37-yearold Goodyear ﬁreﬁghter husband, Cory, was diagnosed with ALS on Oct. 19, 2020, forcing him to medically retire late last year. She took on a second job all the while making time for their blended family and Cory’s doctor’s appointments.

The United Goodyear Fireﬁghters L4005 is teaming with Helping One Woman for the event.

Kimberly Nochta is a natural caregiver. Taking care of others comes easily to the North Phoenix native, who was dubbed an “old soul” as a child.

“Once we got there, it was all conﬁdence,” said Raechelle Dykstra of AZ Epic 16 Elite about the ﬁnals.

The AZ Epic 16 Elite volleyball team conquered an undefeated foe to win the USA Volleyball USA Division National Championship in Indianapolis for the first time. Head coach Mike Lussier said his team is the first in the West Valley to win this tournament. AZ Epic 16 Elite has players from Avondale, Buckeye and Goodyear. The AZ Epic 16 Elite players are no strangers to qualifying for the USAV National Championship tournament, as the club has reached it several times. However, this season is the first time the club wonTheit.team had a mediocre start to the tourney, with a 4-3 record through the first seven games. It finished with four straight wins, the last of which was the championship game against the 10-0 Miami Hype.

Longtime acquaintances

Cory and Kimberly were born and raised in the North Phoenix area, graduating from Shadow Mountain High School in 2001 and 2000, respectively. Kimberly’s brother played Little League baseball with Cory, but the two didn’t connect until they were older. They married in 2018, the same year Cory was hired by the Goodyear Fire Department.“It’sbeen really good for both of us to have a partner who works in service and helping others,” said Kimberly, a labor and delivery nurse.

“They’ve been helping us from the time I was diagnosed to now trying to help raise money,” he said slowly. “The guys and gals I worked with are incredible.”

“That’s not anything Cory wants to do. We aren’t taking part in any of the medications. You have to weigh those pros and cons of medication. For Cory, it wasn’t anything he wanted to do at this point.”

Goodyear ﬁreﬁghter Michael Gugel, who lives in Peoria, went through the academy with Cory in 2018, and that’s when he met Kimberly. “She’s always been like the fun mom,” Gugel said with a laugh.

She rarely asks for help, either, Gugel said. The family is trying to save more than $150,000 to purchase a van to transport Cory when he needs a power chair. So far, the Arizona Cardinals and Desert Financial Credit Union donated a total of $25,000. “A lot of us were a little bit younger who were getting hired. We could call Cory ‘dad’ as a joke. She would come in and she’d always take care of us. She has a very sweet personality and is very giving of her time. She’s a labor and delivery nurse. She works there most of the time. “Then she picked up a second job as a mobile IV person. She’s the light behind the scenes. She’s taking care of Cory. She’s always positive. She never gets down — even when the times are hard. She’s never once complained. She’s never once felt sorry for herself. They always have the most positive outlook on everything. They have tons of support and love.”

Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a rare, fatal neurological disease that primarily affects the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement. Voluntary muscles produce movements like chewing, walking and talking.

A cure isn’t available for ALS, but Cory has stem cells infused monthly to slow the progression. It worked initially, but Kimberly said she’s not sure it’s making a difference now. Federal regulations aimed at blocking robocalls appear to have had some effect over the past year, but robotexts have skyrocketed in their place, according to a recent report from the Arizona Public Interest Research Group.ThePIRG report said the number of phone companies that have installed spam-blocking technology since it was required last year by the Federal Communications Commission has quadrupled, and the number of spam robocalls appears to have fallen by 47% in that period.But robocalling overall has little changed in that time — and is actually up slightly in the U.S. and Arizona — while automated text messages nationwide jumped from 1 billion last July to 12 billion in June.

“Robocalls are a real challenge for me right now,” said Stephan Viehweg, an Indiana resident who recently visited Washington. “We have two elders in our family that require extra medical care and so we have to take phone calls, and when you have new providers, I don’t always know what the phone number is.”

To experts, this is no surprise at all. “The bad guys are going to ﬁnd another way to try and get us,” said Teresa Murray, director of the consumer watchdog ofﬁce for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

It’s more than just a nuisance: Those text messages can pose the same threat as the calls of harming consumers through scams. Those can include claims of fake auto warranties, medical or insurance records, package deliveries and more that attempt to steal consumers’ personal information or get them to hand over cash.

Viehweg said his phone is “getting better at telling me whether it’s spam,” but it is still “very frustrating for us.”

The report released last month by the ArizonaPIRG Education Fund said the number of spam robocalls in the U.S. fell 47% over the last year, from about 2.1 billion a month to 1.1 billion, citing data from YouMail, a robocall blocking firm that tracks robocall traffic. Murray attributes the drop to a sharp uptick in the number of voice providers that have installed STIR/SHAKEN, an FCC-required technology that lets consumers see whether a call is legitimate or not. Actually, “official” recognition of the food pyramid did not occur until 1992. That’s when the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced its own version, alternatively called the “Food Guide Pyramid” or the “Eating Right Pyramid.”

The USDA was all about inclusion at the base of the pyramid, grouping bread, cereal, rice and pasta together, suggesting six to 11 daily servings. On the next level, vegetables and fruits shared elevated status, with guidance of three to five servings of veggies and two to four helpings of fruit. The penultimate placements belonged to milk, cheese and yogurt on one side and meat, poultry, fish, dry beans, eggs and nuts on the other… with both groupings listing suggested

Now, “My Plate” offers official federal food guidance… and has for over a decade.Meantime, everyday Americans seem to encounter new “nutritional studies” — well, everyday. That includes one from the University of Michigan that was curiously released one month after Independence Day.

‘4D vision’: Diagrams, delusions, diets and demise

Scientists conducting the study said they calculated the direct influence of 6,000 various meals, snacks and drinks. They claim that if someone who eats beef and processed pork products would exchange just 10% of their caloric intake for plant-based food, those “enlightened eaters” could gain an extra 48 minutes of life per day. No word on who financed the study, but it sounds as if the U of M has engaged in dubious scholarship to promote its school colors: “Eat maize so you won’t turn blue!”

A competitive balance draft pick, the D-backs selected Varsho in the second round — 68th overall — of the 2017 MLBThatdraft.year, after signing, he made his pro debut with the Hillsboro Hops of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League. He batted .311 with seven homers.Thefollowing year, he moved up to the Visalia Rawhide of the Class A-Ad vanced California League and ended the season with a .286 batting average. He was named a mid-season all-star. During his 2019 season with the Jackson Generals of the Class AA Southern League, he was named to the All-Star Futures Game. He was promoted to the big leagues on July 30, 2020, making his debut against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He wrapped his season hitting .188 with three home runs in 37 games. His .233 mark as of this year’s All-Star break, marks a 45-point improvement from his MLB debut season. The catcher/outfielder combo is cer tainly noteworthy, too. Varsho, who hails from Marshfield, Wisconsin, has played 30 games at catcher, 31 games in center field, and 26 games in right field.

Varsho’s goal is to maintain the ca maraderie among the ballplayers. Good energy can be synonymous with a winning culture.

Though he is only four years older than Thomas and Perdomo, Varsho wants to support his teammates, much in the way that Kole Calhoun and Dal las Keuchel have for him.

“I want to make sure we’re all stick ing together and just having fun,” he said. “When I came up, there were a lot of older guys. Ballet Arizona’s annual tradition of Ballet Under the Stars, presented by the Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation, continues this Sept. 8-11 at four Valley locations, including the Estrella Lakeside Amphitheater. This year, Ballet Arizona is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its partnership with Estrella Goodyear for the annual event. Clemie 86, passed away on August 23, 2022, in Goodyear, AZ. He was born on February 23, 1936, in Buckeye, AZ, to Lee Odis and Lillie Arnold, the 7th child of 11 siblings. Clemie helped his family milk cows, gather eggs, and helped his Dad in building homes, where he got the construction “bug.” He and his Dad made their own blocks by pouring concrete in forms in their own backyard. Eventually he laid blocks for the Steves Brothers in Flagstaff. Later, he went to construction/ design school, studied hard, passed the rigid written test, and when he went up to the window to pay for his contractor’s license, the female clerk took one look at him and said, “you’re too young to be a contractor!” He was 22 years old! He built his fi rst two homes in Buckeye (about 1959), moved into one himself, and sold the other for $5000! He was well known throughout the valley and built homes and commercial buildings in Buckeye, Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Gila Bend, Paradise Valley, Prescott, Show Low, and Pinetop. He had subdivisions in Goodyear and Village Greens in Maryvale, AZ. Clemie was a good athlete and lettered all 4 years in high school, played semipro baseball as catcher for the “Buckeye Merchants,” and softball as pitcher. He was a 7 handicap at golf, and had several games of 300 in bowling. He enjoyed driving his boat and taking the high school Key Club boys skiing at Canyon and Saguaro lakes and liked skiing himself! Snow skiing at Sunrise, AZ and Park City, UT with Gerre, Les and Kevin, was another favorite sport. Clemie was an IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) pilot, and he and Gerre flew all over AZ ,CA, and UT in his Beechcraft Bonanza. He also rode horseback with the Desert Caballeros in Wickenburg manyClemieyears.issurvived by his wife of 43 years, Gerre (Rooks), daughters Terre (Joey) Catanzaro from Yuma, Tracy (Greg) Jacobson from Buckeye, stepson Les Rainey from Peoria, AZ. Seven grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 4 step great-grandchildren, brothers Kenneth (Angie), and David (Edda), and many nieces and nephews.
