ruce Belser will tell you it’s not exactly a need for speed that made him one of Ahwatukee’s newer residents.

But fast cars sure did.

The former Air Force fighter jet and Delta Air Lines pilot in May took on the day-to-day responsibilities of stabilizing — then growing — one of the auto racing world’s most famous schools.

Belser transplanted his home from Florida to Ahwatukee as the CEO of the Bob Bondurant School of Performance Driving on the Gila River Indian Community reservation.

He and two longtime friends and fellow Bondurant graduates, Jeff Hunter of Georgia and Pat Velasco of Florida, shelled out $1.6 million as the winning bidders in an auction before a federal bankruptcy judge in Phoenix.

The auction marked the end of a turbulent nine-month legal effort by founders Bob and Patricia Bondurant to pull the school out of $3.5 million in debt after running it for 50 years.

his was supposed to be a joyous week for Sean Michael Diana as he opened his Amici Trilingual Montessori school, a first-of-a-kind in Ahwatukee because it offers a three-language immersion program for infants up to age 6.

But instead of the sounds of little voices learning Mandarin, Spanish and English, the school at 1244 E. Chandler Blvd. has been filled with the noise of dehumidifiers — and the opening delayed — after a city water main break seriously damaged a room Aug. 15.

“It’s terrible,” said Diana, who has prepping the building for months, making the long roundtrip between Ahwatukee and north Phoenix, where his other Montessori school, Beibei Amigos, is located.

The pipe broke behind the school around 9 a.m. last Thursday, releasing a geyser of water that gushed over a wall and into the school’s infant room.

“I had to rip out the new floor and put in a dehumidifier, and check to see if water got under the floors of any of the other rooms,” Diana said.

Local man’s business a name on ASU stadium

eason ticket holders coming to the east side of the newly renovated Sun Devil Stadium will get a special treat — a club facility with state-of-the-art amenities and amazing views of the outdoor football field.

No one could be prouder than the owner of the Gilbert business that the club is named after — San Tan Ford Club. A ribbon-cutting for the club was held last Thursday.

“We have toured the club and are excited to introduce it as the pre-eminent stadium club in the Valley,” said Tim Hovik, a longtime Ahwatukee resident who is the owner and general manager of the deaalership.

“Stretching from goal line to goal line, the San Tan Ford Club offers the best football views and amenities of any stadium in the state,” he added.

Hovik declined to disclose the cost for naming rights to the new club, saying it was a “private negotiation” with Arizona State University. ASU also declined to release the figure.

To help pay for the overhaul of the Tempe sports facility that topped $300 million, the university sold naming rights to the stadium. Sports Business Journal in 2015 reported sources saying ASU was asking $3 to $4 million annually for that advertisement privilege.

“We wanted to be a part of the club level because we felt like that assert gives us more exposure than any other part of the stadium,” said Hovik, who also had a hand in the club’s design, working collaboratively with ASU and the builder.

The 12,500-square-foot club can seat up to 1,000 fans, according to Scott Nelson, executive director of the Sun Devil Club. The nonprofit organization provides resources for Sun Devil student-athletes.

The club also includes two concession stands, two separate bars, a unique carving station, an impressive video wall and approximately 20 televisions so fans can watch football games from around the country, according to Nelson.

Because the west side of the stadium has premium facilities such as the Coach’s Club and Legends’ Club, officials thought it was important to provide similar amenities on the east side, Nelson said.

Now, they are putting the protracted bankruptcy battle behind them and focusing on keeping the school a multifaceted venue revolving around fast cars.

The school has trained thousands of beginners in driving and accident-avoidance, thrilled just as many performance car enthusiasts who just wanted the rush of zooming along a racetrack, helped countless military and law enforcement personnel refine their chase and evasion skills and served as a venue for corporate gatherings and private parties whose hosts wanted a unique setting.

Now, Belser and his partners wanted to not only continue that legacy, but extend it as they rebuild the multi-million-dollar business that sits on a 100-acre piece of Gila River Indian Community land.

said Belser, who not only has had the task of moving his wife and household here from the Florida Panhandle but also has to find a place for his private plane and collection of vintage automobiles.

“The curriculum is great and the instructors are great,” he said. “All the instructors have been here for years and years. So that portion of the business is solid. There’s no reason to mess with something that’s working so well — other than to increase the capacity.”

A spokesman for Dodge//SRT hailed

Stig’s efforts, declaring, “Together, we have the perfect setting for a fully immersive driving experience like no other.”

But a cloud looms over Stig Investment’s sunny horizon and will play out in Maricopa County Superior Court next month.

The issue is whether Stig can keep calling the school after the Paradise Valley racing legend who named it.

Shortly before the forced bankruptcy sale, the Bondurants revoked the inclusion of Bob Bondurant’s name in an apparent effort to stop the auction in a des-

perate effort to keep the school.

The couple said any buyer would have to negotiate a separate agreement for the use of Bob Bondurant’s name as well as continued use of a museum on the site that houses a number of vintage racing cars they claimed as their personal property.

In a signed statement filed in bankruptcy court, Patricia Bondurant declared: “Bob and I will aggressively prosecute causes of action against any person, including a purchaser of the school, who uses any of the museum cars, memorabilia, other property, his name and likeness, photographs, videos, articles, interviews of Bob or me and/or any pictures or information from the archives without first entering into agreements with bob on terms acceptable to us.”

After the bankruptcy judge basically refused to settle a fight over intellectual property, Stig Investments asked Superior Court to give it full use of Bob Bondurant’s name.

Stig claimed that the school listed, among its assets in the bankruptcy filing, 13 federally registered trademarks that covered not just instruction and vehicles, but clothing, travel bags and other accessories.

long to the school’s new owner.

While Belser would only say that the name comes with the school and that he and his partners bought both, Stig said in a court filing that “the Bondurant School lives under a continuing threat of litigation from the Bondurants.”

“The Bondurant School desires to move forward and growing the Bondurant Racing School, but finds itself hampered by the Bondurants’ continued threats of litigation,” Stig’s filing states.

The Bob Bondurant name became a legend for racing enthusiasts during the 1960s as he became one of the world’s top race car drivers of Corvettes, Shelby Cobras and Daytonas.

In response to the Stig suit, the Bondurants have asked the judge to throw it out, arguing that they have sole right to decide how the name can be used.

“Any rights that the school may have had to use the Bondurant marks were contingent upon Bob Bondurant’s continued consent to use his name and likeness, which he revoked,” they state. “Even if Bondurant had not revoked his consent, as a matter of law, the consent is not assignable without his permission.”

Sept. 16, Belser is making sure the school does what it has done for more than five decades.

Classroom instruction is part of the curriculum. But the centerpiece of its programs involves sliding behind the wheel and putting the pedal to the metal in Dodge Hellcats or a tamer go-kart — though even the go-karts can hit speeds of 50 mph.

In some cases, the students own Hellcats just like those in the Bondurant School’s fleet.

“The majority of the people are just normal owners that appreciate what their car can do,” Belser said. “Very few of them really have any intention of doing any drag racing or racing at all. They just come for the experience. The majority of our customers are people that don’t have any aspirations of racing.”

There are some who do come for accreditation so they can take to the racing circuit, added Belser, who has been through the school twice as a student, most recently in May 2018 with his wife.

“It was a thrilling experience,” said Belser.

In large part, though, Belser’s days are far removed from driving and more closely focused on operating the school.

owner — setting up the internal nuts and bolts of the operation.

“The worst part is there’s no real administrative staff,” he said. “I don’t have someone that I just can say, ‘Go do that.’”

But Belser said he’s thankful that most of the school’s cadre of mechanics and instructors stood fast through the turmoil of the bankruptcy litigation, including Chief Instructor Michael McGovern, who has been at the school for more than 30 years.

Belser, who also is responsible to a board of directors, hopes to broaden the school’s government training program.

The loss of some of military contracts several years ago helped push the Bondurants into bankruptcy, according to court filings.

Belser said that shortly after Stig Investments took over, one government agency brought its own bullet-proof vehicles.

Belser said his main task now is more marketing than anything else — getting the word out that the Bondurant School is securely in the fast lane.

“The bankruptcy kind of presented an opportunity,” he reflected, “because we can tell people we’re out of bankruptcy, we’re going on, we’re going forward and strong. We’re excited and that’s all true.”

“We have a great partner with San Tan Ford and are looking forward to utilizing it on game day as well as throughout 365 days of the year,” Nelson said.

In 2017, Hovik received the university’s Alumni Appreciation Award at Homecoming 2017. The award is given to community members who are not ASU graduates but through their contributions, enhanced the university’s and its Alumni Association’s stature and success.

Hovik attended ASU but has not received his diploma yet. He has been a longtime Sun Devil fan ever since he visited his two older brothers on campus as an eighth grader from Washington State.

Although he left ASU before receiving his degree, he’s been a strong advocate for the university. As a chair of the Arizona Ford Dealer’s Association, he advocated for the university, ensuring the group was on board for providing partnerships with Sun Devil Athletics that, according to ASU, were “worth north of seven figures” in dollars.

Said Hovik of his latest contribution to ASU: “We are very proud to give back to Arizona State University and hope that over the decades to come, Sun Devil Nation will enjoy their beautiful club.”

claim, Diana is still totaling the damages.

Along with the physical damage, “there’s teacher wages and parents’ tuition,” Diana said.

Plus, he’ll need to have the place re-inspected before he can get his daycare license back.

The break occurred at a time when the city’s deteriorating infrastructure has been front and center in Phoenix in advance of next Tuesday’s election involving two propositions.

One addresses the future of light rail and whether that program should be discontinued and the money diverted to fixing city streets.

Prop 105 doesn’t affect the aging infrastructure for the city’s water delivery system. That was an issue the Phoenix Water Services Department addressed when it obtained City Council approval early this year for back-to-back water rate increases this year and next.

But the break is another reminder of the challenges confronting the city as it grapples with maintaining vital services, especially as its infrastructure ages.

and next will help it expand its pipe replacement program.

The other proposition has also fueled debate over city services.

Among other things, Prop 106 would limit the growth of the city budget to population plus inflation until its whopping $5 billion pension deficit is under control.

Although proponents have noted it exempts the budgets for police and fire from this growth limit, opponents of Prop 106 say it would trigger draconian cuts in city services.

Frustrated by the damage to his school, Diana isn’t focusing on these political debates and city issues.

He just wants to open another school that, like BeiBei Amigos, offers a unique variation on the Montessori program — which fosters teacher- and self-initiated education experiences aimed at teaching children early on how to be problem solvers and lifelong learners.

Both his schools have a full-language-immersion curriculum along with a Chinese and Hispanic multicultural curriculum that includes language, vocabulary, songs, art and music.

Each classroom at Amici has a Mandarin, Spanish and English native speaking Montessori teacher along with two assistants.

“We teach the three languages when the brain is hardwiring for languages,” he explained. “Children do not have any problem in this window of time between birth and age 7 to learn any language and many more. At this time, they learn native fluency.”

Nor do the students just get exposed to those languages in school.

“Our students take trips to China and Mexico each year, and my oldest student, he is now in seventh grade, spends a few weeks in China each year with a host family,” he said.

new federal court ruling — coupled with a provision in the state constitution — could give Arizonans new legal protections against the use of software by private firms that captures and stores facial images.

The ruling came in a lawsuit that some Illinois residents filed against Facebook for invasion of State Attorney General Mark Brnovich wants the Legislature to enact tough privacy.

If so, Ikuta said the technology extracts various geometric data points that make a face unique, like the distance between the eyes, nose and ears to create a face signature or map.

Then the technology compares that to other faces in its database of face templates to see if there is a match, at which point Facebook may suggest “tagging’’ the person in the photo.

Ikuta said that process creates privacy concerns.

“Once a face template of an individual is created, Facebook can use it to identify that individual in any of the other hundreds of millions of photos uploaded to Facebook each day, as well as determine when the individual was present as a specific location,’’ she wrote. “Facebook can also identify the individual’s Facebook friends or acquaintances who were present in the photo.’’

And it’s not just what can happen now she said, given how technology is developing.

“It seems likely that a face-mapped individual could be identified from a surveillance photo taken on the streets or in an

office building,’’ Ikuta said.

“Or a biometric face template could be used to unlock the face recognition lock on the individual’s cellphone,’’ she continued, adding: “We conclude that the development of a face template using facial-recognition technology without consent (as alleged here) invades an individuals’ private affairs and concrete interests.’’

And that kind of conduct, Ikuta said, is grounds for litigation.

A spokesman for Facebook told Capitol Media Services the company plans to appeal the 9th Circuit decision.

“We have always disclosed our use of face recognition technology and that people can turn it on or off at any time,’’ the spokesman said.

Brnovich said, though, that an issue in this kind of cases is how easy it is to opt out.

In fact, he wrote to Facebook last year complaining that it took 21 different clicks and screens for someone to be able to opt out of the company’s data collection policies. The company subsequently agreed to make some changes.

That, however, still leaves the question of what rights Arizonans already have to sue over their images being collected, digitized and stored.

“I have always believed that because we

have that right to privacy that provides us more protection than the Fourth Amendment does,’’ Brnovich said, with the latter covering “unreasonable search and seizures’’ and requiring government agents to first obtain a warrant.

Still, he conceded, it remains unsettled law to exactly how broad is that right to privacy — especially when it is being invaded not by a government agency but by private corporations.

“One of the things that we have recently seen is government working with Big Tech and internet service providers to get information that affects individual rights,’’ Brnovich said. “So, we’re starting to see that line blur a little bit more and more when government is using Big Tech and internet service providers to pretty much do its bidding.’’

If nothing else, Brnovich said there needs to be a clear state law about how private companies can use information, particularly if they are making money selling it to others.

“Well, if that’s the case, I should have some sort of property right,’’ he said.

“So, if companies want to buy it, collect it, trade it, sell it, whatever they’re going to do with it, then I should know about it and maybe, ultimately, be provided some sort of compensation for it,’’ Brnovich said.

The warning came after two incidents occurred at different preschools along Chandler Boulevard Aug. 13 only 20 minutes apart.

A woman who was dropping off her toddler at Family of Christ Preschool at 3500 E. Chandler Blvd. at 7:50 a.m. said her purse was robbed when a black SUV or Suburban pulled alongside her vehicle in the parking lot.

Although she thought she had locked the car, a man got out of the black vehicle, opened the driver’s side and stole her purse.

ID, so she had to change her locks.

“They found my iPad because whoever took it realized they couldn’t get into it because it’s password protected so they just threw it out,” said the victim of the first theft, who asked that her name be withheld from publication.

“I was inside only a few minutes,” she said, adding that her older son was in her car in the back seat and had been hiding when he saw the man trying one door, then going to the other side because it was locked.

“He started screaming and I guess the guy got scared off,” she said.

She added that she usually locks her vehicle and that in her haste to drop off her toddler and get on with her day, she didn’t check to make sure the driver’s side door was locked.

She said the incident “was very traumatic” for the older boy, who is 8.

No one was injured in either incident.

Phoenix Police Sgt. Margaret Cox said no arrests have been made and that the cases are under investigation.

“We would advise people to lock their vehicle and keep valuables out of sight at all times,” Cox added.

esert Vista High School student-journalists’ work has earned nominations in four of the 11 categories for awards by the Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

Students and their advisor, film/TV teacher Michelle Coro of Ahwatukee, have been nominated in the Newscast, Arts and Entertainment/Cultural Affairs, Special Effects and Public Service Announcement categories.

‘Deaths of despair’ rising in Arizona, nation

ASHINGTON — “Deaths of despair” have grown more slowly in Arizona than in the nation as whole since 2005, but death rates in the state still exceed the nation in every category, according to a recent national survey.

Deaths of despair — the catchall name for deaths from drug overdoses, alcohol and suicide — have seen “alarming” increases across the country since 2005, said the Commonwealth Fund’s Scorecard on State Health System Performance for 2019.

The report said those increases have come as access to health care has started to level off after several years of improvement when states were expanding access to Medicaid.

It said most states “are losing ground on key measures related to life expectancy as premature deaths from suicide, alcohol and drug overdose continue to increase.”

Most alarming was the growth in overdose deaths, driven in large part by the opioid crisis.

Overdose death rates rose more than

doubled, going from 10.1 per 100,000 U.S. residents in 2005 to 21.7 per 100,000 in 2017. That 115 percent increase included a 10 percent jump from 2016 to 2017 alone, the report said.

“While the overdose rate has somewhat moderated recently, the 10 percent jump between 2016 and 2017 is still among the highest annual increases the nation has seen,” the report said.

In Arizona, the growth in overdose deaths was slower, but the rate was no better: The overdose death rate rose 57 percent in the same 12-year period, from 14.1 deaths per 100,000 Arizona residents to 22.2.

The Arizona Department of Health Services reports that opioids are suspected in more than 3,400 deaths in the state since June 2017, a period during which more than 24,000 overdoses have been recorded.

In 2017, Gov. Doug Ducey declared a state of emergency over the state’s opioid epidemic that was lifted after the passage of the Arizona Opioid Epidemic Act. That law requires tighter restrictions on prescriptions, protections for Good Samaritans and users in need of treatment for an overdose, and better reporting,

among other changes.

“We have not won the war, but we are making some impacts,” said Eddie Sissions, a private consultant for Research Advisory Services.

She pointed to improvements like the state investing $10 million in opioid treatment for individuals, whether or not they were covered by the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System — the state’s Medicaid program. The Commonwealth report said that while states have made an effort to curb the opioid crisis by “improving access to opioid overdose reversal medications” and passing laws that set limits on opioid prescriptions, there is still much more that needs to be done.

“These are important steps, but there is more to be done in preventing and treating opioid use disorder and responding to overdoses,” the report said. “Reversing the upward trend in deaths from suicide, alcohol and drug overdose will require greater cooperation across sectors, at both the state and federal level.”

The numbers for suicides and alcohol-related deaths also are still steadily rising. Suicides nationally rose from 10.9 per 100,000 in 2005 to 14 per 100,000 in

2017, a 28 percent increase. In Arizona, the suicide rate rose just 11 percent but was still higher than the national rate, going from 16.4 to 18.2 suicides per 100,000 Arizonans.

When it came to alcohol-related deaths, Arizona was both higher than the national rate and was rising at a faster rate. Alcohol-related deaths rose 43 percent, from 11.3 to 16.2 per 100,000 Arizonans, compared with a national rate increase of 37 percent, rising from 7.0 to 9.6 suicides per 100,000.

“Steady increases in suicides and deaths linked to alcohol are also concerning and represent yet another marker of complex socioeconomic and behavioral health problems across the nation,” the report said.

The report, which measured states on 47 criteria, showed a connection between the deaths of despair and access to affordable health care.

Arizona ranked 32nd in overall health care performance, which includes access and affordability, healthy lives, prevention and treatment, among others. The state ranked in the lowest quartile of states for adults with any mental illness who did not receive treatment and uninsured children.

2 nonprofits band together to feed needy

omeless and other hungry, needy people may soon dine on perfectly good prepared meals that otherwise would have been thrown away.

Mesa’s United Food Bank and Scottsdale’s Waste Not, both nonprofits, are merging in hopes of streamlining operations and supplying meals to other charities that feed the hungry.

While United Food Bank has rescued nearly out of date foods from grocery stores for years and supplied soup kitchens and other charities, Waste Not specializes in salvaging prepared meals — such as those prepared by catering services for parties and conventions, or excess food cooked but never sold at sports venues.

“We just want to increase the number of meals we can get to the people who need it most,’’ Kate Thoene, executive director of Waste Not, said last week when the program was announced.

She said Waste Not can accept food that has been cooked, but not food that has been served, because of health regulations. That eliminates food from pot luck

“It’s essentially over-production’’ by licensed kitchens, Thoene said.

Last year, Waste Not recovered 3.5 million pounds of edible food from catering services and other food purveyors, taking

it the same day to such charities as the Boys and Girls Club, the UMOM family shelter in Phoenix, the United Methodist Church in Tempe and some transitional living centers in Mesa.

Not an affiliate of the United Food Bank, allowing it to use United Food Bank’s west Mesa warehouse and its extensive distribution network in the East Valley and eastern Arizona.

Between the two of them, the agencies recovered 8 million pounds of food, said Dave Richins, CEO of United Food Bank, who sees potential for increasing that significantly by expanding Waste Not’s reach into the East Valley.

“I think the East Valley is underserved by this product,’’ Richins said. “If I can bring more resources into the East Valley, I will do it.’’

He said Mesa’s strong assortment of nonprofits, such as A New Leaf and Save the Family, could benefit from additional prepared meals. A New Leaf, for instance, operates a domestic violence shelter and the East Valley Men’s Center for homeless men.

Paz de Cristo, Mesa’s soup kitchen, could obtain prepared foods and give it to the homeless and working poor after they dine on their evening meal, prepared by a rotating list of churches and other community organizations, Richins said.

“Food security is a logistics question,’’ Richins said. “We have enough food. It’s a matter of getting it to the people who need it most.’’

While people seem willing to fight and argue about just about anything in a polarized society, most people agree that no one should go hungry, he said.

Richins said it is a natural fit for United to add Waste Not as an affiliate because both organizations target hunger, but in a different manner. United’s role has been to deliver uncooked groceries to other food banks and social service agencies, where it is either cooked or distributed in food boxes to the disadvantaged.

“The reason a nonprofit exists is to provide a solution to a community need and our two organizations have both worked tirelessly for many years to answer the same need, but in different, complementary ways,” said Christina La Porte, Waste Not Board President.

“Last year, Waste Not recovered 3.5 million pounds of prepared food that would have otherwise gone to waste — a record in the agency’s 32-year history,” added Kate Thoene, executive director at Waste Not. “I’m thrilled to be working with United Food Bank, who prioritizes collaboration and sees this expanded partnership and prepared food rescue as an avenue to move the needle on hunger relief in Arizona.”

f you haven’t scheduled orchestral concerts on your fall/winter calendar, you might consider doing so with the Ahwatukee-based MusicaNova.

This is not your usual orchestra, whose motto is “We Play the Greatest Music You Haven’t Heard — Yet.” And they prove it.

Case in point is their opening matinee

Titled “Beethoven to Tap Shoes,” it includes a tap dance concerto by Morton Gould performed by Jenefer Miller, a Desert Vista High School teacher and nationally-renowned tap dance performer and instructor.

“MusicaNova Orchestra introduces new, neglected and traditional music, along with some of the finest new artists, giving you the greatest musical experi-

ence you’ve never had — yet,” said MNO president/CEO Robert Altizer of Ahwatukee.

Alitzer, a 25-year Ahwatukee resident, said the MusicaNova Orchestra has achieved considerable respect for its unusual choices of music and strong commitment to encouraging young musicians.

Their annual Young Artists Concerts series features valley musicians 18 and younger performing in formal recital set-

By drawing a grid on the reference image and the art canvas, he can focus on one square at a time, systematically interpreting the image with scraps of paper.

Arranged in a mosaic fashion, the portraits are composed with paper cut and torn from Art in America magazines and color samples from a home improvement store.

“They are portraits of people I know,” he said, noting one is a chef who cooks for seniors, another a caregiver in a nursing home and another is a self-taught engineer.

Airport extends Ahwatukee artist’s unique show AFN NEWS STAFF

housands of people have seen the work of Sebastiao Pereira.

They can’t help but notice it.

The Ahwatukee artist’s work has been displayed on a corridor wall at Terminal 3 at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport since last November — and it has been so popular that the airport museum staff is keeping it up until this November instead of taking it down three months ago as they originally had planned.

Pereira’s exhibit consists of seven 4-foot-by-5-foot portraits that he collectively calls “Making Faces.”

Ahwatukee woman seeks donations for veterans’ wreaths AFN NEWS STAFF

lara Laubham of Ahwatukee wants people to know that it’s not too early to remember the deceased men and women who served our country and who are interred at veterans cemeteries during the Christmas holidays.

The 84-year-old widow, whose husband is among the thousands of deceased veterans who were laid to rest there, is part of the Arizona/East Valley chapter of Wreaths Across America.

The nonprofit organization sells the graveside wreaths to raise money to provide a variety of things for patients at the VA hospital as well as homeless veterans.

Laubham’s late husband James served in the Army for 30 years as a dentist and retired as a colonel. He passed away in 2013.

The tradition was started by Morrill Worcester, owner of Worcester Wreath Company in Harrington, Maine.

As a 12-year-old paper boy for the Bangor Daily News, he had won a trip to Washington D.C., and was moved by his visit to Arlington National Cemetery.

“This experience followed him throughout his life and successful career, reminding him that his good fortune was due,

In 1992, Worcester Wreath had a surplus of wreaths and the company made arrangements to have them laid on the graves in one of the older sections of the cemetery that had been receiving fewer visitors with each passing year.

It was then the family formed the nonprofit with the goal of doing nationwide what they had been doing at Arlington.

With a simple mission statement — “Remember, Honor, Teach” — the nonprofit now annually lays more than 1.5 million wreaths at veterans cemeteries across the country.

The centerpiece of the group’s efforts is a veterans parade — said to be the world’s largest — that goes from Harrington, Maine, to the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, stopping along the way at schools, memorials and veterans

That parade this year on Dec. 8 will be coordinated with the wreath-laying ceremonies Dec. 14 at 1,100 cemeteries across the country as well as at sea and abroad.

“It’s such a beautiful sight,” Laubham said. “The trucks come in and are filled with wreaths and we have a ceremony and volunteers lay the wreaths on the veterans’ graves.”

She said she remembers one family at the National Veterans Cemetery in north Phoenix visited the wreath-laying ceremony.

“The parents wanted their children to see and learn what these men and women did for them,” Laubham said.

artists and former students. They are my heroes. They are my friends. I love to see them, side by side, sharing the same wall space,” Pereira said.

Pereira, 69, has lived in Ahwatukee since 1992.

The Brazilian native holds a degree from Pontificia Universidade Catolica de Minas Gerais in Brazil in education, Portuguese and English.

That background prompted the Peace Corps to hire him to teach Portuguese and Brazilian culture to the volunteers down in Brazil between 1976-1979.

In 1981, a pair of his students, Elden and Bethel Winkle of Mesa, offered to sponsor his art education at Arizona State University.

“In my first semester at ASU, ASU granted me a retroactive scholarship,” he said, and that enabled him to earn both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in fine arts.

“At this point in my life I do not depend on the sales of my art,” he said. “I was an art educator for many years. My work until recently was mostly in watercolor and I have an extensive list of local, state, national and international group exhibitions.”

He also has a large collection of fine arts photographs but has not yet entered them into a public exhibition.

His work came to the attention of the airport museum through a friend and fellow artist, Clottee Hammons, whom he

describes as “my non-official agent and my guardian angel.”

“She knocked on the doors of the Modified Arts gallery on Roosevelt Avenue and they offered me a show there. Garry Martelli, the Airport Museum curator, attended the opening reception and offered me the show at the airport.”

The portraits have been in the making for

over 10 years and the museum exhibit represents only a fraction of some 30 pieces.

“The portraits are not photographs,” Pereira stressed. “They are paper collages on board or canvas. They are made out of thousands of little pieces of papers. Each of the colored ones is made out of 2,880 one-inch-square pieces of paper individually cut.”

Was that a challenge?

“Yes,” he replied. “It requires a lot of patience and precision.”

He also uses paint samples from home improvement stores — and once was thrown out when he brought a five-gallon plastic bag to take a bunch to his home studio.

Pereira was humbled to learn that the Airport Museum staff wants his show hanging in October, when a group of airport museum curators from around the country will be touring Sky Harbor’s works.

“I hope my show will take off from there,” said Pereira, whose work is included in a book titled “Watercolor: Masters and Legends” by Bettsy Dillard Stroud.

He also recently won the people’s choice award sponsored by Focus Brasil Arizona.

As the school’s Fine Arts Department head and orchestra director as well as Mariachi de Tempe instructor at Tempe High for nine years, she credits MusicaNova with the phenomenal growth of the school’s orchestral program.

“The program has grown 400 percent, and our success is partially due to the partnership with MusicaNova Orchestra,” Osbourne said. “Students have the opportunity to hear incredible music at two free community concerts each year; and in the second half of the concert, students join the professionals on the stage.”

The first such concert is Oct. 22.

“The partnership also includes opportunities for students to learn from professionals when they visit the orchestra class and share their expertise during rehearsals. My students are inspired by the incredible musicianship of the orchestra and by the kindness of the musicians,” said Osbourne, an educator for 36 years.

“By encouraging youth to enjoy music we are helping to keep a great musical tradition moving forward,” she added.

MusicaNova also partners with Connolly Middle School, where Chandler resident and school orchestra director Dorene Pool is herself an MNO musician who plays a variety of stringed instruments. She has played viola with MusicaNova for seven years.

A retired Mesa Public Schools orchestra teacher who still substitute teaches in the field, Pool said she is torn when deciding what she values most about MusicaNova.

“It’s difficult to choose just one thing that I most appreciate about MusicaNova,” she explained. “The new and neglected music we perform is certainly an important contribution to our society, but if forced to choose, I’d say bringing music into the lives and schools of young peo-

“We’re educational partners with many schools, and with Harmony Project-Phoenix, doing outreach visits — assemblies, workshops and collaborative performances,” said Altizer, who became acquainted with MusicaNova when he auditioned and was hired by Director Warren Cohen in 2002 as bass soloist for Handel’s Messiah.

“Then when MNO was formed in 2003, I started attending concerts and occasionally performing with them,” he said.

rospective home buyers may have to turn to new houses instead of resales if they hope to find new digs any time soon, a leading Valley real estate analyst said last week.

With resale home inventory inventories at nearly historic lows, the Cromford Report said that buyers’ only recourse may be new construction.

“Buyers may be liking the interest rates, but the lack of available inventory is a nightmare for them,” it said. “No doubt many will turn to the new home market, which has seen surprisingly stable pric-

ing under these circumstances.”

Calling the current state of the market “extraordinary,” the Cromford Report also said, “At some point this trend in favor of sellers has to change direction, but there is scant evidence of that at the moment."

On Monday, analyst Mike Orr posted on Cromford: "I cannot stress enough how unusual the active listings counts look this year, collapsing after hitting a peak at the beginning of March. In February it looked like we would have far more suply than last year but the situation has changed

With supply at such a low level, some real estate experts say they are surprised that prices have remained relatively stable.

But they also suspect that won’t last much longer and that prices especially on existing homes will start to rise.

“What has become exceptionally clear over the last couple of months is that while prices haven’t reflected the continued imbalance in the market, we can most certainly expect they will in the short

term,” said one Realtor.

As of the end of last week, about 17,500 homes were listed for sale in Maricopa County.

Even though this is a slow time for sales, that’s still about half the usual inventory of available resales, Realtors said.

In Ahwatukee as of last week, there were 188 listings that ranged from a 750-square-foot condo listed at $160,000 to an 11,000-square-foot home with a $4.1 million price tag. Of homes on the market in Ahwatukee, 25 carried seven-figure price tags.

Nevertheless, “resales are busy in Ahwatukee,” Ellis said, noting many houses on the market are getting multiple offers – and not staying on the market very long.

As for new homes in Ahwtaukee, the two major developments are being built by Blandford and Ashton Woods and Ellis said they “are so new to the area we will have to wait and see” how pricing turns out.

Promontory in far west Ahwatukee “is more a luxury new build at the end of the day because of the final price points,” she added.

Ellis said she can’t recall a time when inventory was so low. “I recall the 20052007 buying frenzy but that was not so much an inventory issue as a sub-prime

loan issue,” she said.

She also said that Cromford Report’s prediction of any major increase in prices is something “I can’t see.”

“Closer to an election year, rate adjustments, global market – yes, all those can cause disruptions.

“I think we took such a hard hit from 2008-2012 we may fair better than most markets in the country. I have heard that the shortage of inventory is going to get worse so that will certainly change the stability in the market,” Ellis said.

Apartments also are in short supply.

Marcus & Millchap issued its quarterly report on multifamily construction in the Valley and headlined it: “Apartment Construction Falls Short of Residential Demand; Average Effective Rent Skyrockets.”

Apartments are getting eaten up quickly as the result of huge economic expansion in the Valley and a massive influx of people moving from out of state, the real estate brokerage said, noting: “The Phoenix market has been consistently outmatched by rental demand over the past several years despite high levels of construction.”

The brokerage said more than 8,200 new apartment units will have been added to the Valley for 2019.

f something bad happens to your house, should you call your insurance company immediately?

Not so fast, warns Realtor.com, which cautions that too many claims — or one wrong one — “could turn a real-life disaster into a financial catastrophe” because “your premiums might rise, and you’ll still have to cover the cost of the damage.”

The website says homeowners insurance isn’t as simple as claim it and collect it.

To save money in the long run, it cites five scenarios where homeowners might want to think twice before submitting a claim.

When the cost is within 20 percent of the deductible.

“Don’t treat your homeowners insurance deductible like your medical insurance deductible. Just because your insurance company will cover part of the cost doesn’t mean you want it to do so,” Realtor.com says.

“I would never recommend that one of our customers turn in a claim that, after the deductible, is only going to pay out a couple hundred dollars,” said one agent.

“We advise our customers to pay cash until it becomes painful.”

Submitting multiple small claims may ultimately make you “uninsurable,” the site warns.

“Soon, you’ll see higher premiums, and you might even struggle to switch insurance providers.”

Financial planner R.J. Weiss advises homeowners to “avoid filing a claim within 20 percent of your deductible. So, if your deductible is $2,000, don’t submit anything to your insurance if it costs less than $2,400.”

When it was avoidable.

Avoidable doesn’t mean “your fault,” or even anyone’s fault, per se. “Not all losses are created equal,” an agent advised. “Take hail, for instance: There’s nothing you can do to keep a freak storm from battering your roof. A theft or fire claim is always going to be worse,” he added, noting “your post-claim insurance premium increase will be proportionately worse, too.”

While this shouldn’t keep you from filing a claim if your losses were severe, consider paying cash if you can afford to do so, Realtor.com says.

When you are responsible.

If you’re filing a claim because of homeowner negligence, consider carefully whether you can afford to fix the problem yourself first.

“If the damage is due to your lack of maintenance, your claim may be denied,” said QuoteWizard.

“Even if your claim is denied, it’s still noted on the Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange — or CLUE — which means that it can affect your premiums.”

If your insurance company believes you’re not capable or interested in maintaining a safe home, that can affect your insurance, too.

Immediately maintaining or repairing any issues when they show up “can prevent you from filing frivolous claims,” the site said.

When your local agent tells you not to file.

Having a local insurance agent can be a lifesaver, especially if you’re trying to avoid premium increases.

“I take pride in advising my clients and helping them decide the best course of action regarding the claims,” said one agent.

“If you call the carrier directly, they’ll often funnel you right to the claims department. Even if you’re only looking for the answer to a couple of questions, this often triggers the start of the claims process.”

Realtor.com advises: “Talking to a local or independent agent first can save you the trouble of filing a claim you really shouldn’t have — and which also might increase your premiums.”

The agent added, “Many agents can call your insurance company — without giving your name and policy number — to inquire about the chances of your claim being denied.”

Realtor.com admitted that “figuring out which insurance claims are worth making can be a tricky business.”

But it said understanding the problem and whom to call if you’re on the fence “will prevent you from paying more in homeowners insurance costs over the long run.”

Keller Williams, which calls itself “the world’s largest real estate technology franchise by agent count and the U.S. leader in units and sales volume” while Offerpad says it “receives a new offer request from a homeowner every 30 seconds and acquires a home every 20 minutes throughout regular business hours.”

Keller Offers is being introduced in Phoenix — including Ahwatukee — and Dallas by the end of August and eventually will have a presence in 10 more American metro areas.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–Day Saints is partnering with the American Red Cross to host the 17th annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive — which Red Cross calls its biggest drive of the year in Phoenix.

o you ever feel like your kids know more than you do about how to navigate around on smart devices?

We can’t monitor our children’s every move online, but internet parental controls are an easy way for parents to make sure their kids stay safe while they’re streaming, gaming, scrolling or chatting.

As our use of the internet and the modes we use to access it have evolved, so have parental controls. Here are six tips for making the most of parental controls available for every internet-connected device in your home: • Setting up parental controls is not hard. Remember how many ways kids can access the internet. Use resources such as Internet Matters to figure out which devices and online accounts you can set parental controls on, and go from there.

• Make controls on YouTube a priority. Use YouTube’s parental controls to set your account to “restricted mode,” even if you use You Tube Kids, so your kids won’t run the risk of viewing disturbing content when searching for clips of their favorite shows.

• Don’t forget their email or social media accounts. Make sure you have access to your minor child’s accounts (usernames and passwords), and regularly monitor their interactions if possible.

Otherwise, consider blocking a social media site or deleting an email account if you’re truly worried.

Most importantly, know what parental controls can and can’t do.

Parental controls can control how much time your kid spends online using devices you and your family own, which online games your child can access, filter browsers so your children can only access pre-approved websites, prevent children from using certain devices, limit what children can search for online and manage the types of videos that are searchable online.

Parental controls cannot control who reaches out to your children on their own social media channels or what photos children view on their own social media channels if those websites are not blocked, or you do not have access to their accounts.

Prop. 106 will result in substantial funding cuts to critical services the city provides its residents, such as parks and libraries, and deserves a “no” vote.

Each day, light rail removes over 25,000 car trips from the road, improving the daily commute for everyone.

With less cars on the road, light rail significantly reduces our use of fossil fuels, improves the quality of our air and reduces the number of collisions that occur on our streets.

As Phoenix continues to grow rapidly, light rail needs to grow with it and provide a safe, sustainable, and affordable way for people to get where they need to go.

If Proposition 105 passes, sizable federal grants that were slated to go to Phoenix will be diverted to other cities for expanding their light rail systems.

Large regional grants will be awarded to other cities and towns as well. By failing to invest in light rail, we are failing to invest in stronger, healthier communities and an improved quality of life.

If Proposition 106 passes, places such

as libraries and parks that make up the fabric of our city would experience significant funding cuts.

If Phoenix is to continue to grow and thrive, our leaders need to make sure each of our communities have opportunities to learn and recreate.

By reducing funding for essential services, we take away opportunities for Phoenix residents.

Vote no on Prop. 105 and vote no on Prop. 106.

Transportation can help seniors live healthy lives

Transportation is the second largest challenge for seniors and their families after health care.

For these reasons, I helped a company that offers door-through-door service where the drivers not only drive, but also provide assistance and companionship at all points along the journey.

Through this experience, I’ve discovered there are several critical ways to ensure seniors can maintain independent

and healthy lives: Schedule and keep preventative health appointments. Regular check ups and preventative screenings are important to ensuring that seniors stay healthy.

Help seniors stay social. Make sure the seniors in your life are able to maintain a consistent social calendar whether it be attending religious services, lunch outings with friends or visiting family.

Identify and remove potential hazards that could potentially cause accidents, such as adding ramps to curbed areas around the home or adding handrails to bathrooms.

If a senior is unable to drive, identify what services or public transportation options are the best fit.

No matter a person’s age, most people simply want the ability to enjoy an independent life. For seniors, they may require a bit more attention and assistance to achieve this goal.

New business will store big toys for hobbyists AFN STAFF

handler residents needing extra space to store their cars, boats or motorcycles will soon have the option of buying units at the new Toy Barn location.

Projecting to open next year, the 80,000-square-foot facility will consist of 66 units than can house the expensive toys of any hobby enthusiast.

And this is not a simple storage shed, according to Toy Barn co-founder Jason Phillips. He described the units as luxurious, high-end pieces of real estate.

“There’s a lot more to it than just a warehouse box,” he said.

Chandler is the latest spot in the Valley where Phillips and his father, Paul, have built one of their “barns” over the last decade.

They started in north Scottsdale in the midst of the Great Recession, so it predictably took a while for units to sell.

By 2012, Phillips said the Scottsdale units had sold out and the company began scouting for new locations.

They established two more barns around Cave Creek and are now expanding to the southeast with its newest prop-

“We can accommodate more (space) if somebody actually needed it,” Phillips said.

About 25 percent of Chandler’s units have already been sold and Phillips expects them to be all gone by the time the facility opens.

Toy Barn’s main clientele consists mostly of retired snowbirds looking to spend time in Arizona during the winter months.

There are downsizing trends in the real estate market, Phillips noted, where res-

idents are choosing to sell their socalled “McMansions.”

“I think they’re just tired of the expense and the maintenance that goes with them but they don’t necessarily want to abandon all of their (possessions),” Phillips added.

Baby boomers had been buying these lavish, spacious homes before the housing market crashed ten years ago. But according to the Wall Street Journal, McMansions around Scottsdale were currently selling at an all-time high.

This trend seems to have benefited Toy Barn as residents look to find space for their assets.

The Chandler market was a dynamic

addition to the company’s portfolio, Phillips said, because of its booming population and prime location for serving various demographics.

And there’s a communal aspect to the Toy Barn properties. Parties and events are can be scheduled at a members-only clubhouse, where owners can congregate and mingle with one another.

“The communities are really starting to function more like a country club for likeminded individuals,” Phillips said.

Toy Barn will be breaking ground at the Chandler site in October and it will take developers about a year to build the facility. The company’s considering opening additional locations in California.

Over time they also upgraded the interior design that became standard for all Melting Pot restaurants — dim lighting, mostly booths with some rooms for private parties.

There are more than 100 Melting Pots across the country and the Johnsons have discussed going international.

But they need not worry: it’s not a slow death.

The Melting Pot in Ahwatukee at 3626 E. Ray Road will remain open, as will the business’ Glendale location.

In fact, the Melting Pot is adding 50 seats to its Ahwatukee location in anticipation of additional business from disappointed fans of the Scottsdale venue.

In announcing the Sept. 30 closing of their Scottsdale eatery, the owners said it was “strictly a carefully planned and weighed business decision.”

How Social Security fits retirement strategies

t might not be on your calendar, but Aug. 14 is Social Security Day. Since it was enacted on Aug. 14, 1935, Social Security has provided some financial support for millions of Americans during their retirement years.

While Social Security benefits, by themselves, probably aren’t enough to enable you to retire comfortably, they can be a key part of your overall retirement income strategy — if you use them wisely.

To help you make decisions about Social Security, you will need to answer these questions: When should I start taking my benefits? You can take Social Security once you reach 62, but if you wait until your full retirement age, which will probably be between 66 and 67, you’ll get much bigger monthly checks, and if you wait until 70, you’ll get the biggest possible payments.

Before deciding when to begin receiv-

ing your benefits, you’ll need to weigh a few factors, including your estimated longevity and your other sources of income.

How should I consider potential spousal benefits? If you are married, or if you’re divorced but were married for at least 10 years, you could receive up to half of your spouse’s full retirement benefit (offset by your own benefit, and reduced if you claim early).

If you outlive your spouse, you could claim survivor benefits, which can provide either your own benefits or 100 percent of your deceased spouse’s, whichever is larger.

Consequently, the higher-earning spouse might want to postpone taking benefits for as long as possible to maximize the survivor benefit.

How much can I earn without reducing my Social Security benefits?

If you are younger than your full retirement age and you are receiving Social Security, the Social Security Administration will withhold $1 from your benefits for each $2 you earn over a certain threshold (which, in 2019, is $17,640).

For the year you reach your full retire-

ment age, your benefits could be withheld by $1 for every $3 you earn over $46,920.

But once you reach your full retirement age, you can earn as much as you want without your benefits being withheld, although your benefits could still be taxed, depending on your income.

How much of my pre-retirement income will Social Security replace? Generally speaking, you should expect Social Security to replace slightly more than a third of your pre-retirement income.

However, the higher your income during your working years, the lower the replacement value of Social Security will be.

What other sources of retirement income should I develop? Contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan.

You may want to consult with a financial professional, who can look at your entire retirement income picture and recommend moves to help you achieve the lifestyle you’ve envisioned for your later years.

Eggstasy brings breakfast magic to S. Chandler

eter Verros says he’s a simple, bacon-and-eggs-type of guy. But the menu at his new brunch spot in Chandler begs to differ.

It has jelly-donut-flavored pancakes, bacon covered in chocolate and crepes served with bananas and chili peppers.

Verros said his staff at Eggstasy, 2430 S. Gilbert Road, is always experimenting and testing the limits of the standard breakfast menu.

“We’re always looking to keep going forward, keep being innovative,” Verros said.

They serve waffles, pancakes, sandwiches, burgers and eggs — lots of eggs.

Verros estimated they crack about two million eggs from Hickman Farms each year. They serve eggs with apple cider-flavored bacon, eggs with ciabatta bread, and nine different styles of Eggs Benedict.

And there are specialty items not on the regular menu, like crepes covered in

The Chicago native moved to Arizona a few years ago after a trip exposed him to the state’s alluring sunshine and business-friendly atmosphere.

“I came out here and fell in love with it,” Verros said.

He has more than 25 years of restaurant experience, opening and running his first breakfast spot when he was still a teenager.

Her shop is known as a rage room, a concept that’s been recently popping up throughout the country.

It’s believed to have started in Japan about 10 years ago before hundreds of rage rooms started opening in Europe and the United States.

Garcia’s business follows this same formula, except she really wants her clients to find some harmony through their experience. This is why her rage room is called Purge, Love, and Peace.

“Those are the stages that you need to do to find some sort of balance in your life,” Garcia said.

There are contradictions found throughout the store on Oregon Street.

Garcia’s bathroom is covered in flashy, attention-grabbing stickers: one advocates for socialism, while another supports capitalism.

One sticker displays a stoic Barack Obama. Another is a flattering portrait of President Donald Trump.

The aesthetic is not trying to take a political stand on any issue. Rather, it attempts to resemble the chaos that goes

New area business wants patrons really angry

A

majestic, purple unicorn adorns one of the walls of Kristin Garcia’s new shop.

But this is no doe-eyed, cartoonish, cute unicorn. He has the face and presence of a strong warrior. This creature is beautiful, but not to be messed with.

“He’s just showing the power of what a little balance… can do for your whole world,” Garcia explained.

“Balance” is a reoccurring theme in Garcia’s new business — Purge, Love, and Peace, located in downtown Chandler.

Across the room from the unicorn are the words “hate,” “taxes,” and “hell” spray-painted on the wall. The ugly words purposefully contrast with the mystical unicorn.

It’s all meant to symbolize the yin-yang duality that encompasses daily life, Garcia said. If one wants to see the light, they may have to walk through the dark.

Eclectic, hip brunch spots that serve avocado toast can now be found everywhere throughout the Valley. But Verros said this has been his style for years.

He wants Eggstasy to feel like a momand-pop store that’s welcoming and inviting.

It should almost feel like a party, he said, which is why the restaurant has Maroon 5 and Ricky Martin playing regularly in the background.

“We don’t want that corporate feel,” Verros said.

Crepes remain one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. From Nutella crepes to spinach crepes, Eggstasy offers a wide spectrum of both savory and sweet op-

When guests enter the shop, they walk down a long, shadowy hallway that Garcia wants to feel almost like the corridor of an insane asylum.

Clients are dressed in jumpsuits, gloves and face-shields before they’re escorted into one of three rooms.

A video plays on a television, advising guests of the rules for playing in the rage room. Then they’re given 20 minutes to break whatever they want.

“They can just go to town, do what they need to do.” Garcia.

For $30, the guest receives a basket of breakable goods that they can smash with baseball bats, golf clubs or hammers.

They can upgrade to premium breakables like toilets or flat-screen TV sets for a little more money.

The shop will also customize to special requests from clients.

For example, if a guest hates their job and wants to release some steam, they can replicate an office setting inside the rage room and let the guest play out a destructive fantasy.

“We can kind of customize to whatever it is that is irritating, frustrating or weighing you down that you need to get off your chest,” Garcia said.

She recalled a recent guest who had been battling cancer and just gotten a divorce. He had feared his illness would take away his mobility, so Garcia let him bring in a wheelchair and walker: two objects that had come to symbolize his pain and anxiety.

And there are plenty of healthier options for customers looking to watch their calories. The menu offers items like protein-filled pancakes and whole wheat French toast.

Among the restaurant’s numerous menu items, Verros said his personal favorite is the gluten-free lemon ricotta pancakes.

The restaurant will be testing out Japanese-style soufflé pancakes in the near future.

In honor of the Chandler location opening, customers at all four Eggstasy locations will have the chance to win a special prize on Aug. 24.

If a customer receives a gold-coated pancake on that day, they’ll win a lifetime supply of free pancakes.

The restaurant is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Tempe native said she encountered a troubling conflict while putting the business together.

She had hired a contractor named Jack to help her build the rage room. But the guy turned out to be a crook and took her money.

Garcia couldn’t get over the betrayal she felt, so she found a way to discretely get back at him.

Written on the walls of the shop’s bathroom, amid the clutter of various political stickers, are the phrases “Jack Sucks” and “Jack is a Thief.”

It’s a bit of an inside joke the guests won’t pick up on. But shaming Jack in this way brought Garcia some peace.

“It’s kind of a way for me to move forward,” she said.

Garcia plans to launch an “I Hate Jack” giveaway campaign next month that lets guests receive free breakables.

Mental health experts have had varying opinions on whether rage rooms are a good way to deal with stress.

Many have said they can be a fun activity for healthy individuals, but wouldn’t classify rage rooms as a clinical form of therapy.

Desert Vista ready to roll in new season

T

here’s plenty of excitement surrounding the Desert Vista High School football program as it heads into a new season, and for good reason.

The Thunder will return several starters from last year’s team that went 10-2 and made it to the quarterfinals of the 6A Conference playoffs.

They’re a tight-knit group that recognizes they could be on the brink of something special in 2019. Now it all comes down to execution in the regular-season opener against Palm Springs High School on Friday.

“I can’t wait,” Desert Vista quarterback Parker Navarro said. “Senior season, it’s my last chance to go ball out before college. I’m just excited.”

Navarro returns under center for the second year in a row to lead Desert Vista’s offense. As a junior, he threw for 1,568 yards and 17 touchdowns. In 170 attempts last season, Navarro only threw 5 interceptions.

Resi Shank, who started the entire 2018 season at linebacker for Mountain Pointe, will now shift most of his focus to offense, as he becomes the lead running back. In his place is two-year Hodge, who played middle linebacker last season and led the team in tackles with 109, 19.5 of which for a loss.

Zach Hay, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound junior now takes over in the middle of the defense. Hay missed most of last season with a broken collarbone but is now ready to step into a leadership role for the incoming players from last year’s junior varsity roster.

here’s a certain level of confidence that could be felt at every practice the Mountain Pointe High School football team has had leading up to the start of the regular season.

The Pride aren’t concerned with the questions outside entities may have about their program. They aren’t concerned with being overlooked and the “underdog” in most of their games this season.

They are only concerned with themselves and the first task at hand in the 2019 season. They want to make a statement against Nevada power Faith Lutheran.

“We’re ready,” senior linebacker Rashion “Chunka” Hodge said. “We’ve all put in a good amount of work. We don’t want to just go out there and compete, we want to try and dominate.”

leadership,” Desert Vista coach Dan Hinds said. “We are really fortunate as a team to have a quarterback with his traits. He’s a kid that runs the team, he runs our (Fellowship Christian Athletes), he holds the team accountable.

“All of those things you want your quarterback to have, he has them.”

Navarro will benefit from a slew of talent around him this season, starting in the backfield with senior running back Tyson Grubbs and his brother, sophomore Devon Grubbs.

Tyson broke out during the first four weeks of the 2018 season before he was derailed by a broken bone in his foot he suffered in Week 5 against Highland. No surgery was required to fix the metatarsal, but he was sidelined for the rest of the season.

“I know them, so it’s easy to talk to them,” Hay said. “It’s more of a lead by example type of thing. I know I have to step up this season and I’m not afraid of the challenge.”

Hay and Hodge will lead a defense that features several new faces, but all of whom have a unique skillset to maintain Mountain Pointe’s reputation of being physical.

Dominque Davis, Mountain Pointe’s top wideout last season, will see time in the secondary along with junior Diamante Landrum, who had 52 tackles and 3 interceptions last season.

Anthony Raynor figures to be a force at defensive end this season with his 6-foot-5, 207-pound frame along with junior Christian McKinnon. Mountain Pointe will rotate several defensive tackles this season to stay fresh, including senior Steven “Big Steve” Williams III and Will Haire, both of whom will also start on the offensive line for the second consecutive year.

“We’ve got the basics down,” Haire said. “Now it comes down to execution.

We have to do that against Faith (Lutheran High School) and throughout the rest of the year. We just need to play our game and not let anything get to us.”

One of the biggest question marks surrounding the Pride program, and one coach Rich Wellbrock and the rest of the coaching staff have remained under wraps about, is at quarterback.

Devon stepped up and played a vital role in the Thunder’s success after Tyson’s injury. The two finished with a combined 1,446 yards rushing and 25 touchdowns.

While Tyson aims to prove himself, Devon hopes to expand on what was an impressive showing as a freshman.

“I never thought I would be in this position,” Devon said. “Especially being with (Tyson), I didn’t really think I would be able to play with him until maybe this season in the playoffs. I think it makes our connection stronger.”

The brothers will also be used at slot receiver next to seniors Braeden Belnap and Elijah Ervin.

Colby Humphrey, who is an all-around

playmaker for the Thunder, will also see time at nearly every skill position on offense and defense, which has become custom for several of the Thunder players.

Seniors Eddie Weigl and Miles LeBlanc return to anchor the offensive line. On defense, the two join senior Jaylen Johnson on defense in an effort to replace Brett Johnson, Thomas Jackson and Tyler Roberts, who were all part of a dominant 2019 lineman class. The defensive line will have help from an athletic group of linebackers, led by senior Zack McGinnis, who made the switch from safety this offseason.

“We are going to make plays on both sides of the ball,” Navarro said. “That’s my expectation and I know it is theirs, too. We can’t sell ourselves short.

Desert Vista caught some off-guard last season with the type of success they had after losing several seniors. But that won’t be the case this season.

Desert Vista’s players know the type of expectations surrounding the program with the talent they return and the overall chemistry they share on the field. They have a chance to make something special out of the 2019 season, one that goes beyond possibly winning a championship.

They could very well be the best team in program history.

“Each day we go out to practice this team understand their concepts a lot better and it’s getting sharper,” Hinds said.

“We still have a way to go, but they know that. But the good part about this group is they always come ready to work.

“If their progression can continue, it’s going to be fun.”

Powell to change the course of the game right away like Wallerstedt did.

“He doesn’t have to win the game he just has to facilitate the game,” Wellbrock said.

“As a sophomore, that’s all we can ask for.

We will rely on our backs and receivers to be the playmakers. Once he can facilitate, he will look pretty darn smart.”

Powell will benefit from Davis, Landrum and 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior tight end Kevin Sawitzke to throw to.

Shank will join Powell in the backfield along with junior running back Chivis “Q” Benson, who Wellbrock describes as the team’s ground-and-pound style back that isn’t afraid to make contact with a defender. And for good measure, Hodge will also appear at running back at times this season for the Pride.

Wellbrock has seen constant improvement in each of his players throughout the spring and summer. Powell has appeared more confident in the pocket, while those around him have stepped up to make plays in big situations during 7-on-7 passing tournaments.

But even then, Mountain Pointe hasn’t gotten the attention the program has become accustomed to in recent years.

But that’s what this team and coaching staff prefers.

“We want to lay low and I think we’ve done a good job with that,” Wellbrock said. “We had a successful summer on both sides of the ball. We always talk about executing with relentless effort.

“That’s what we plan to do when we head up to Vegas to open the season.”
