Career Success Schools has opened a STEM Academy in North Phoenix to house seventh- to 12th-grade students.

STEM—science, technology, engineering and math—focuses on preparing students for real world career success.

The middle school features a school within a school model called Star Academy, a hands-on, project-based learning model where students experience a sneak peek into hundreds of career opportunities.

The Star Academy students are typically those students who have struggled with school in the past. The hands-on approach re-engages some of the most disengaged learners and prepares them to be successful in high school and beyond.

All STEM Academy students (grades seven to 12) receive a Chromebook and access to Wi-Fi, individualized support and a learning environment that teaches community, persistence and drive to become anyone they like.

Amy Spencer is the director of schoolSTEM Academy. She recently moved from Colorado, where she worked in a large urban school district for 12 years. Her background in special education, school leadership and district leadership uniquely qualifies her to support the students and families.

GESD and Verizon Innovative Learning are tech savvy

The Glendale Elementary School District has four Verizon Innovative Learning schools for the 20202021 school year.

Desert Spirit, Sunset Vista, Melvin E. Sine and Challenger schools have just deployed more than 2,000 iPads to their fourth- through eighth-grade students. The iPads come with wireless connectivity to ensure all students have access to distance learning.

The Verizon Innovative Learning schools received the Digital Promise grant that makes this work happen.

Teachers receive intensive professional learning regarding how to incorporate iPads and other technology-based teaching and learning activities that highly engage students.

Challenger and Melvin E. Sine schools have been implementing this for over a year to resounding academic results. Students are engaged, learning and able to utilize technology fluidly.

Arizona-based Career Success Schools was incorporated in 2000 and operates four charter school campuses in Phoenix. As kids prepare for the upcoming school year, school supplies remain critical to their success. While school districts struggle with the challenge of delivering education and resources to students amid a pandemic, many parents are working to determine how they will ensure their children have the necessary supplies.

Community youth programs are innovating to fill gaps and ensure kids from low-income families in particular are equipped with learning materials and supplies, enrichment activities and food. For example, when schools closed, local corps of The Salvation Army started adapting creative alternatives to their youth programs to provide activities, snacks and educational materials like coloring sheets, scavenger hunts and more to keep kids entertained and learning.

For high school seniors like Angelo Talamantes, a 2020 graduation is not as comical as the social media memes.

Talamantes, like most seniors, is taking it in stride but has challenges he never dreamed of just three months ago.

As a Deer Valley Academy senior, Talamantes has been anticipating the moment when he would walk across the stage and be handed that small piece of paper that means the world to him; his ticket into adult life and the new experiences a diploma brings. He looked forward to sharing this milestone in front of peers, family, friends, and others who helped him achieve his goal. The ceremony will go on, but scaled way back due to social distancing restrictions.

Talamantes found his biggest challenge to be online schooling; something he tried before and hoped to avoid. He misses the interaction and direct communication with the teachers and, of course, socializing with friends.

He learned to juggle school, work and

travel to the hard-to-find job he accepted, 30 minutes from home.

The time spent with family has been positive.

“With more time at home, I’ve learned a lot about the strengths and struggles people have gone through.

I enjoy the efforts everyone makes to stay connected.”

Talamantes knows he will make changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’ll be more cautious in groups and try to spread more happiness. I’ll listen to the medical professionals who are trying to keep everyone safe.”

As for graduation, Talamantes will get that prized diploma. And while the ceremony may look and feel a little different, he realizes that “if it has to be this way, it has to be.” It seems Talamantes is well equipped to face the future.

The Peoria Chamber of Commerce has many 501(c)(3) members. These charities complement the Peoria Chamber’s leadership as the “voice of business” by serving the thousands of needs in the West Valley.

The chamber business association affords 501(c)(3) opportunities to beef up their messaging. • Invest in marketing and relationships development. “Any business has to spend money on marketing, especially not for profits. Nonprofits must focus on their passion, but they need to supplement this passion with proven marketing and relationship tools,” said Carri Kaufman, the Peoria Chamber’s business development manager.

• Give genuine thanks often. It was surprising to research and learn how some-

times a 501(c)(3) overlooks an expression of gratitude for donations, support and referrals. A simple letter, card or other gesture goes a long way, yet many charities neglect this important aspect of relationship building and development.

Get involved with extracurricular activities. If you have a particular skillset or experience, for example as a high school or college athlete, lending your knowledge to a local youth group can help provide a constructive outlet for kids while enriching your own life.

Volunteer for meal distribution.

Many children rely heavily on schools for meals; in fact, the food some students receive through their schools’ breakfast and lunch programs may be the only meals they get in a day.

Across the country, organizations have partnered with local school districts to provide meal kits, coordinate food distribution routes and pickup locations to get meals to kids and families. Depending on the needs in your area, you may be able to donate food, assist with organizing the meal kits or help coordinate deliveries.

Glendale Elementary School District Continues to Advance services for families and the community

A goal for Glendale Elementary School District is to cultivate opportunities for schools to be the hub for the community where families are able to receive the necessary support for their basic and social-emotional needs. GESD sustains and strengthens this commitment through the creation of new positions and continuing to serve the community.

Over the summer, GESD hired four counselors and three social workers to help strengthen the family and community partnerships. Counselors will focus on supporting the behavioral health needs of students, while social workers assist in fostering communication between schools, parents/guardians, and community providers. Further, they will connect families to resources within the community to support the educational program. Both roles are vital positions that complement the Social and Emotional Learning Specialists (SELS), which is a role that has existed in GESD for at least ten years.

GESD believes no child should go to bed hungry. To ensure children and their families have a warm meal, GESD has continued their partnership with St. Mary’s Food Bank. GESD will continue to provide food distribution to the Glendale community. The next curbside pick-up will be on August 25 and will continue biweekly. If you have questions, please call 623-237-7364 or email familyhub@gesd40.org. Currently, GESD has two food pantry locations to provide food to families, with one location at William C. Jack School and the other at the District Office inside the Parent Hub. The Market on the Move is an additional food resource for Glendale community members. Participants may purchase 60 pounds of fresh produce for ten dollars! The program is available on the fourth Saturday of each month beginning in January through May. The Parent Hub is another resource that will remain in operation to serve parents and families. The Hub’s mission is to engage parents as partners in their child’s learning. Free monthly classes are available for families to learn new innovative ways to learn with their child. Lastly, we want students, staff and families to feel safe while on campus and in the community. GESD partnered with Valle del Sol in late July to offer free COVID-19 testing inside the Glendale Landmark School gym. GESD will continue to strive to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and keep students, staff and families safe.
