Capt. Rod Thompson has known since he was a child that he wanted to be a firefighter.

“It’s a funny story,” Thompson said, leaning back in a chair at his longtime employer, the Scottsdale Fire Department.

With the Discovery Channel airing the 30th incarnation of its popular Shark Week television event in late July, interest in the predator is high this summer. The shows attract millions of viewers, and their popularity has led to multiple Sharknado movies and shark-themed items in popular video games.

Businesses in Arizona are capitalizing on the shark craze, too. OdySea Aquarium, on the Salt River PimaMaricopa Reservation near Scottsdale, has been filling its calendar with a variety of shark-related events. Fifty sharks of 14 species live in the aquarium’s tanks, nearly half of them in the biggest tank, called Shark Waters.

Sand tiger sharks are some of the largest sharks at OdySea, and can grow up to 10.5 feet in length. Their inward-angled teeth help the shark prevent its prey from escaping. Other species at OdySea include nurse sharks and whitetip reef sharks.

But what goes into taking care of so many of these carnivorous creatures?

The answer lies behind the scenes: advanced filtration systems, lots of raw fish and a dedicated team of employees, some of whom dive with the sharks on a regular basis.

OdySea Aquarium has dozens of exhibits of various sizes, but Shark Wa-

ters is the largest at 450,000 gallons. It holds about 25 sharks and a wide variety of fish, said Dave Peranteau, director of animal care and conservation at OdySea. Employees monitor the animals 24/7, Peranteau said, and a fulltime veterinarian is on staff.

Visitors most often view the sharks from below the waterline, but OdySea employees get a different look. Because of their topless design, many of the aquarium’s large tanks can be easily accessed from the second floor of the 200,000-square-foot aquarium.

Although OdySea’s filtration system leaves the tanks relatively clean, divers are needed to remove algae and maintain the tanks. The staff at OdySea collectively performs nearly 60 dives per week.

Caring for sharks isn’t a job for the impatient, Peter Santoro said. “You’ve got to have a cool temper. You don’t know what they’re going to do,” he said.

A blend of squid and mackerel is prepared for some of OdySea Aquarium’s smaller sharks, which can devour nearly 17 pounds of raw fish per week.

Sharks in the wild often go weeks without eating, Peranteau said, but those at OdySea are fed about three times a week to keep them from feasting on fish that share their tank.

Schueller said her favorite part of working with the creatures at OdySea is getting to know their personalities.

“It’s really hard not to get attached to your animals here,” she said.

metals that can be harmful to sea life.

Nearly three miles of pipes are used to circulate water through the facility.

Some of the animals at OdySea were born in the aquarium, but many came from other aquariums or were purchased from vendors. When the aquarium needs to pick up an animal or deliver one, it uses a climate-controlled truck with a special tank. “It’s not just like bringing a package back – these are live animals,” Peranteau said.

“It’s like driving an aquarium across the country.”

He won the school’s contest and was named fire chief for the day. “I have a photo of me shaking the fire chief ’s hand. From that moment on, everything I did was gearing me toward being a firefighter.”

His mom wasn’t exactly happy about this decision. She sent him articles and lectured him about the dangers of being a firefighter. In particular, she reminded him that firefighters get cancer, he’s afraid of heights and hates the heat.

He acknowledged the fear of heights and dislike of heat. “I’m still afraid of heights,” Thompson said with a smile.

“I’m still not crazy about the heat, but I absolutely love what I do. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, expect maybe a job as an astronaut. I’ve pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I’m probably not going to be an astronaut.”

But he was diagnosed with cancer.

Firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14 percent higher risk of dying from

cancer than the general U.S. population, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

In the beginning of 2016, he started having gastrointestinal issues.

His doctors couldn’t figure out the problem, so the specialist ordered a scan and a colonoscopy.

The week before that Christmas, his doctor referred him to a urologist, nephrologist and oncologist. It was the last term that startled Thompson.

“In that moment, everything just changed,” Thompson said. “Everything changes when you’re told to see an oncologist. He didn’t have to say the words. I knew what he meant.”

The scan showed a small neoplasm, or tumor, on his kidney. “Like everybody else, I googled the snot out of everything,” he said. “Apparently, it happens a lot with kidney cancers. It’s either an incidental diagnosis or an angel discovery. You’re having these other issues and they do imagery and find out you have cancer.”

Thompson had a medium-size tumor on the upper part of his left kidney. Surgery meant a three-month recovery. He had eight-hour surgery to remove part of his left kidney on

February 20, 2017. The successful operation removed all the cancer.

“Literally in an instant, I became a cancer victim and a survivor,” he said.

“In the same instant, I just lost it.

Totally, totally lost it because of the gravity of the whole thing.”

Thompson was diagnosed on February 24, 2016. Thirty-three states had a presumptive clause for cancer, but kidneys weren’t covered. There was an expansion clause on the books that the governor signed, but it wasn’t law yet. That would take another 90 days. “I couldn’t file a claim,” he said. “The good news was the industrial commission gives us a year from the date of the injury or illness to file a claim.”

In August 2017, he filed his claim and the city of Scottsdale “was great.”

However, the claim was denied. He was sent to an independent medical examiner to verify he had cancer from an occupational exposure. He was denied again.

He had 90 days to file a challenge.

“So, I spent 89 and a half of those days doing my homework and getting all my ducks in a row,” Thompson said. “On the 90th day, I filed my appeal and then they hooked me up with an arbitrator.

I wasn’t seeking anything huge; I just wanted to pave the way for somebody else in a similar situation. That’s the last thing anybody needs is to deal with that crap on top of having cancer.”

According to the First Responder Center for Excellence, some diseases are considered “presumptive.” Generally, in the case of work-related illness or injury, the burden is placed on workers to prove their ailments are a result of occupational exposures. With the advent of presumptive legislation, the employer must prove the firefighter’s working conditions were not a significant contributing factor to the development of cancer. With presumptive legislation, the line-of-duty claim, and subsequent benefits, can be automatically approved if the criteria are met under the state’s regulations.

As a result of his work, Thompson’s medical expenses were reimbursed.

He has scans and checkups every six months. “Many of us are in the same boat,” Thompson said. “We all came up together and we didn’t know back then.

It was through no malice or ill intent that we were exposed. We were doing the best we could with what we had at the time.”

Known in the “ninja world” as the “daddy-daughter ninja,” Cates works out alongside his 6-year-old daughter Jaelynn, who dreams of being a contortionist. “I’m the daddy-daughter ninja because everything I train, we train together,” Cates said. “She always tries to beat me. I try to beat her.

We’re always doing things in this sport together, so it keeps our nice little bond.”

In the nine years since the television show first aired, ninja-warrior gyms have popped up in 43 states. Arizona has three – AZ on the Rocks, KTR Family Action Sports Center and Scottsdale Parkour and Freerunning – all in the Phoenix area. Florida and California have the most ninja gyms with 13 and 12, respectively. Across the United States, there are 191 ninja gyms.

“The growth of the ninja-warrior gym has been exponential, particularly in the last two years,” said Anthony Storm, executive producer and one of two showrunners for American Ninja Warrior. “People are looking for some way to exercise that keeps them motivated and keeps their attention, and these gyms are that.”

Cates isn’t the only American Ninja Warrior competitor who has trained at AZ on the Rocks. Steve Kimpton, ninja instructor and founder of the training program, said he trained 11 participants on the show last season.

The most recent season, season 10, three members of the gym qualified for city finals in Los Angeles.

One of the three is Brian Rambo, 38, who joined the gym in August after his wife signed him up for a ninja-warrior competition without telling him.

Rambo said he had stage fright at first

but soon grew to love the ninja-warrior obstacles.

In Los Angeles, Rambo ran the fastest qualifying time of all the competitors.

“I was a rookie, so that was kind of a big deal. I didn’t know I ran the fastest time until the night was over,” he said. “I just went out there and did what I do. That was the result.”

Rambo said his time of 2 minutes, 27 seconds could have been faster, but Kimpton was yelling from the sidelines to slow down and take his time.

Kimpton started ninja training at AZ on the Rocks in September 2016. The retiree and former rugby player saw the NBC show and thought he could compete with the ninja warriors. He began training himself at the gym and building the rig one section at a time.

Soon, other gym members who’d heard about the ninja-warrior rig began using it.

Two years later, the ninja-warrior gym has 50 to 60 members ranging from young children to adults. Kimpton also organizes competitions frequently, which gain 100 entrants on average.

On a Monday night adult class, Jess Broderick, 14, is the youngest person training on the ninja rig. He started three months ago after watching a few YouTube videos and seeing the popular show. “It started out hard. For me, it got pretty easy pretty quickly,” Broderick said.

The young cross-country runner receives the support of fellow trainees.

It’s never quiet in the gym with other participants yelling encouragement and offering critique and advice for what they call their “ninja family.”

“It’s really boosting,” Broderick said.

“If people are putting you down, you’re going to want to quit, right? But if people are lifting you up, it makes you feel good. It makes you want to keep going.”

Personal trainer Sandra Smith was receiving a lot of encouragement from fellow ninjas on this Monday night, even when she didn’t necessarily want it. “I gave Lee (Cates) a hard time because I wasn’t going to run that last part and he goes, ‘Are you going to go?’”

Smith said. “Everyone encourages each other. There is a sense of community and camaraderie.”

Smith started training at the gym last September but had to take a break to recover from knee surgery. She said the biggest difficulty is the mental aspect of the obstacles, but with that, she sees the many advantages of ninjawarrior training. “I’ve been an athlete all my life,” Smith said. “But as far as the challenges, I don’t know that there’s any level of weight training that trains you for this. You use muscles that you don’t even think about on a day-to-day basis.”

Mike O’Donnell has been training at AZ on the Rocks for about a year.

Before that, he trained at Scottsdale Parkour but switched because AZ on the Rocks offered more resources for ninja training.

A businessman by day, working 9 to 5, and a ninja by night, O’Donnell said the training just fit his personality.

“It’s a little bit fun. It’s challenging.

It’s mentally taxing. There are some situations where you get a little afraid.

You get scared. Your adrenaline gets pumping. It’s a nice rush,” he said.

Kimpton believes ninja gyms are proliferating as American Ninja Warrior moves into the mainstream.

“It’s becoming more and more popular every year as more people tune in to the show,” Kimpton said. “It was a very niche program at the beginning, and each year, it’s kind of snowballed.”

In the first five years of the program, the show received several thousand applicants each year, Storm said. Now in its 10th season, that number has increased exponentially. Producers have reduced the minimum age from 21 to 19 and are adding a new program, American Ninja Warrior Junior.

The success of the Ninja Warrior franchise is expanding the overall sport. “I absolutely believe it is a sport,” Smith said. “If you think about the physical aspect of it, the mental aspect of it, it combines all of those things. It absolutely is a sport.”

Hoster brothers given a great childhood – now they’re giving back

By Mike Phillips Growing up, their family’s singlestory ranch home on Osborn Road seemed the center of the universe to Adam and Ben Hoster.

Their elementary school, Pima, was directly across the street. So was the paper drop for their Arizona Republic delivery routes. Soccer and baseball practice, plus games of hide-and-seek, unfolded on Pima’s fields.

And when those fields were irrigated during warmer months, there was rag-tag, slosh-and-slide, play-till-dark football. “We’d grab a bunch of guys and just kill it on that field,” recalled Ben. It was on those fields where the brothers developed a friendly rivalry that still simmers today as Scottsdale first responders.

Whether it was team sports, racing BMX bikes or their pursuit to each earn Eagle Scout, Adam and Ben pushed each other. Pima and its playing fields also engrained into Adam and Ben a deep sense of sharing and community.

“So, we basically had to spend seven days at the hip,” said Ben, who was just settling into his public information role.

“That first year I had to coach him up before he could do a news interview,” said Adam, returning the flak he received earlier.

Ben smirked – “Yeah, after you quit eating.”

The banter never stops. But neither does the pride of serving their hometown. “For us, Scottsdale was a great proving ground,” Ben said. “It was a great place to grow up… to have the school to play in, to have friends all over the place. It was a great environment.” “(Scottsdale) is really all we’ve ever known,” Adam said. “But after growing up and seeing other cities, I feel really fortunate to have grown up in Scottsdale.”

Knowledge gleaned from their childhood paid immediate dividends in public safety. “When I went on an emergency response and an address was given, I pretty much knew exactly where I was going,” Adam said.

Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center launches new programs

By Marilyn Hawkes This fall, Valley of the Sun Jewish Community Center (VOCSJCC) will roll out new cultural, social and educational adult programming, including technology classes, cultural excursions and day trips. To meet the rising demand, The J has hired Cheryl Blumenthal as director of adult programs, according to chief executive officer Jay Jacobs.

Some of the new offerings include a visit from Phoenix Symphony musicians, a panel discussion about breast cancer with Arizona Center for Cancer Care physicians and a talk by local author Marcia Fine.

For the first time, The J will offer a monthly Active Culture & Learning Membership for nonmembers age 65 and over so they can participate in active adult programming at the member rate without having to purchase a full membership.

The J also offers a variety of fitness and aquatics activities for older adults, including “Fit For Life” for flexibility and strengthening exercises; chair

said. A survey of members revealed they wanted classes on gluten-free cooking and healthy eating on the go.

“We’re also thinking about couples classes, hands-on cooking, kids classes like Cupcake Wars and Chopped and girls’ night out. The opportunities are endless,” she said.

The community center boasts a 50,000-square-foot fitness facility with the most up-to-date cardio and weight equipment; heated competition and activity pools; basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer; racquetball and pickleball courts as well as a 2,500-square-foot splash pad.

This year, The J will launch a kickball league for teens and adults.

Members and guests use the heated pool year-round for swimming lessons, lap swimming, swim clubs for all ages, water polo, fitness classes and other water activities. The center just finished eight weeks of free Sunday pool parties for members and their guests, Jacobs said.

To enhance The J’s fitness experience, the staff is developing a fitness concierge position to help members and guests register for programs, learn how to use the equipment and to answer questions.

resonated powerfully with the spirit of the burgeoning city. City Hall and the Civic Center Library feature thick walls, deep-set windows, and white exteriors, which are appropriate for the desert. But the buildings’ clean lines, bold forms, and open floor plans project modernity. Even after 50 years, they continue to serve as a powerful symbol of the city’s identity.

When the City Hall building was completed in 1968, the city invited the public to “gentle festivities” celebrating the new edifice. The celebration began with a cocktail party at Hotel Valley Ho, followed by a stroll to city hall for building tours and entertainment. A flier for the event promised “Fireworks, Music and Dancing but no speeches.” To commemorate the 50th anniversary of City Hall’s completion, Scottsdale is holding a “Celebrate 68” event inspired by the original festivities.

Celebrate ’68 will be held on Oct. 13 at Scottsdale City Hall and the Civic Center Mall – no word yet on whether there will be speeches.

Culture is alive at Scottsdale’s Museum of the West Story and photos by Kimberly Hosey screenings of old Westerns to educational talks. At the moment, though, we wanted to explore.

One of the first exhibitions we checked out was “The Rennard Strickland Collection of Western Film History,” which is on display through September 23. One of the largest collections of Western film posters and lobby cards dating from the 1890s to the 1980s, the exhibit illustrates the evolution of graphic artists’ work and of the movies themselves as they reveal Hollywood’s version of the Old West.

The display caught my son’s eye immediately, the bold colors and dramatic lettering of the posters drawing him in.

And though he’s never shown interest in Roy Rogers or Gene Autry, he immediately began offering feedback: This movie looks fascinating, that one looks like it represents things very differently from how we would today, these movie posters are funny, surprising, romantic.

From Stagecoach and Grapes of Wrath to silent films and early animated features, the vivid display draws everyone in, even if they’re not cowboy film aficionados.

And that was the theme throughout the museum: You might get a bit extra out of the exhibits if you’re a huge fan of the memorabilia, history or genres, but everyone is drawn in.

Paintings illustrate Native American culture, steely cowboys, wildlife, pioneer living and much more. Each time, my son read the placard beside the artwork, describing not only the artistic vision and inspiration but the culture that informed the artists’ work. Even though I’ve lived in Arizona for most of my life and my son is an Arizona native, there’s a lot we don’t know about the history of our state. And while I hoped my teen would be interested in learning about our region’s rich culture, I wasn’t confident that a collection of Western artifacts and art would hold his attention more than his smartphone.

I was pleasantly surprised during our recent visit to Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West.

The exhibitions in the 43,000-squarefoot museum cover the culture, history and people of the American West, spanning 19 states including Arizona.

One of the first things we noticed in the museum was the tranquil atmosphere: not somber and stuffy, but laidback and inviting. Combined with the elegant architecture and the air conditioning on a hot day, it was heavenly.

Heading out from the front desk is a “path” of wagon wheels suspended from the ceiling, leading to the museum’s theater, which hosts everything from

It’s not all two-dimensional art. families and kids in mind – with the hope that children living here will grow up with a sense of the history behind their home – and it shows. Activity tables, toys, games, and puzzles join the bronze sculptures and paintings. If your kids want to play, the museum has you covered.

One thing you should make sure to check out: Wade Weber’s “Essence of the West,” a modern work that plays with perspective to create a unique view of an Old West town. Keep your eyes on the painting as you walk by.

It’s a favorite with kids – and probably adults too. It was also the only time my son took out his phone: to try to record the experience.

The American West is a story – or rather, several meandering, overlapping stories – and the Museum of the West tells the stories well.

A recent study identified Phoenix as a “hotspot” for potential disease outbreak because of the high rate of parents who opt out of vaccinating their children.

Arizona is one of 18 states that allow exemptions from vaccination because of personal beliefs, according to the study published in the Public Library of Science. Many Arizona parents seek medical exemptions for religious or philosophical reasons.

In Maricopa County, nearly 3,000 enrolling kindergartners had nonmedical exemptions from vaccination in the 2016-17 school year, according to the study. That’s three times as many unvaccinated kindergartners as the next-highest county, Salt Lake County in Utah.

The report’s authors said that because these hotspots have such a high rate of vaccination exemptions, outbreaks could “spread rapidly throughout these populations of unimmunized, unprotected children.”

Laura Glenn, a naturopathic physician at Rejuvena Health & Aesthetics in Scottsdale, said some parents might get confused about vaccines. “I really think that part of that is because we are living in an age of information overload,” she said. “We have so much news and so much information coming at us from so many different angles, it can be hard to know what to believe.”

In 1998, The Lancet medical journal published a study linking certain vaccinations to autism, triggering the anti-vaccination movement. The study was later retracted after it was found the doctor who led the study falsified the data and his claims were fraudulent, according to CNN. Glenn said she believes information is key when it comes to the decision of whether parents should vaccinate their children. “To make an informed decision, they need to be looking

vaccine-to-vaccine, illness-to-illness,” she said. “Parents should ask ‘What are the risks to contracting the illness?

What are the possible consequences of the child getting the illness? What are the risks of the vaccine?’”

Alexandra Bhatti, faculty associate in Arizona State University’s College of Health Solutions, told ASU Now that “before the middle of the last century, diseases like whooping cough, polio, measles, Haemophilus influenzae and rubella struck hundreds of thousands of infants, children and adults in the United States. Thousands died every year from them.”

But as people began using vaccines for these diseases, their rates declined.

However, outbreaks still occur – even when vaccines are readily available.

A measles outbreak hit Maricopa and Pinal counties in 2016, infecting about a dozen people. The outbreak – one of the largest outbreaks in years – started at a privately run detention center in Eloy, according to a Cronkite News article.

The potential spread of illness is not the only result of non-vaccination.

“You also have the effect on the health-care system,” said Daniel Crawford, a clinical assistant professor in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University.

“And so that utilizes more health-care resources and increases the amount of money spent in the community.”

Roaring Fork’s summer menu sizzles until September Roaring Fork Executive Chef Scott Mortensen offers an alternative to standing out by the grill in the summer heat for extended periods of time: The summer tradition of barbecue can be enjoyed in his air-conditioned restaurant. Roaring Fork is offering its summer seasonal beef and barbecue menu until September 3.

“Summer and barbeque go hand in hand, but it’s hard to want to grill outside in these hot temperatures, so we are giving our guests the opportunity to enjoy what they love without the challenge. Let our culinary team do the cooking,” he said.

Summer delicacies include the Roaring Fork Beef Dip with thinly sliced beef, caramelized onions, white cheddar cheese, onion jus and French fries; a spit-roasted barbecue half chicken; and a Southwest Steak Salad with chopped iceberg lettuce, black bean and corn pico, crispy tortilla strips and ranch dressing.

There is one dish in particular that Mortensen recommends to nearly every diner looking for a Roaring Fork instant classic. “Our ribs are what I’d most easily stand by,” he said. “It’s been a few years now working on the rub recipe, because we like to make sure they’re perfect.”

Besides offering great barbecue food with a quality service experience, Mortensen said the restaurant aims to

please the loyal Roaring Fork diners, who have come to expect a variety of dishes and menus, as well as dining styles, to match the date and season.

“During the summer, we get a lot more of the happy hour-type experience, so we think our barbecue menu kind of caters to that mindset, whereas during other seasons, it’s more of a slower dining experience, which maybe some of the regulars become used to. Either way, it’s fun, but we definitely love giving that experience to the people here when it’s hot,” he said.

Mortensen said he has received more positive reactions than he can count, and expects that, assuming the popularity of the barbecue menu stays

the same, the new menu will be something to look forward to each summer for years to come.

“We’re going on our second year, but the first time we ended it, we always had people asking when the barbecue was coming back because they loved it,” he said. “Really, we will probably be expecting this to be a longterm thing.”

Brown Sugar Fudge

I think I know where the saying, “Oh fudge!” came from. It was from someone trying to make fudge. Frustrating doesn’t even begin to describe the experience for so many of us who have tried and tried…. (and tried!) to hit on the perfect fudge recipe! Generally, with most recipes (excluding fudge) you try it and if it doesn’t turn out the way you want, you can tweak it the next time. Not with fudge. You make a recipe for fudge and it turns out perfectly. Then you make it exactly the same way the next time and it’s an epic fail. Oh fudge! So when I came across this recipe for Brown Sugar Fudge, the caption captivated me: “Lush, velvety texture.” The first batch produced the most magnificent flavor but the texture was too grainy. Reviewing the process, I realized I probably didn’t stir the mixture enough to completely dissolve the sugars. Also, I may not have stirred as vigorously or as long

Brown Sugar Fudge Ingredients: - 2 cups light brown sugar - 1 cup granulated sugar - 2 tablespoons light corn syrup - 1 cup heavy cream - 1/2 teaspoon salt - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter - 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla - 1/2 cup pecans, chopped (optional) Directions: Step #1 Butter an 8-inch square baking pan.

Step #2 In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, granulated sugar, corn syrup, heavy cream, and salt. Heat

I should have when the mixture had cooled. So for the second go around, I corrected those steps. It was so much better! It yielded the same fantastic flavor with a creamier texture but not as “lush or velvety” as I wanted. So, I had to do it. I had to give it one more go. Before I give you the results of the final batch, I want you to know that in order for me to commit to giving any recipe three tries, it has to fit my criteria: First, I have to believe the recipe will be worth your while, since I’m writing this column for you. Second, the recipe has to be simple with inexpensive ingredients. Well, the third time for me was not a charm. It had that same great taste, but I never got the rich and creamy texture I was hoping for. Not being a fudge aficionado, it could be that this texture is right for this recipe. The flavor makes it worth a try. Ready to fudge? on medium, stirring to dissolve the sugar.

Step #3 Insert candy thermometer and cook until mixture reaches 238 degrees (soft ball stage).

Step #4 Add butter and stir until melted and fully incorporated. Remove pan from heat and let mixture stand undisturbed until mixture cools to lukewarm (about 115 degrees).

Step #5 Add vanilla and beat vigorously with a wooden spoon until smooth and creamy. Fold in optional pecans.

Step #6 Pour into prepared pan and let harden. Cut into squares. Store in an air-tight container.

Chris Daughtry sold 8 million albums, 16 million singles and received four Grammy Award nominations.

But the former American Idol contestant still gets nervous on the eve of an album release. Cage to Rattle by his eponymously named band was released July 27. Although he’s happy with his first new album in five years, the work to promote it is daunting.

“I always forget how much work is involved: the interviews, the shows, the promo,” Daughtry said. “But it’s all worth it.”

The songs took about five years to write and Daughtry says he doubted his ability to craft great songs. “It was taking forever,” he said. “It was a frustrating process and I was

wondering if what we were doing was good, if this was the right record and if we were taking the right approach.

“But it turned out exactly how it should have. I rattled my own cage, for lack of a better term. It was hard, but it was a rewarding process.”

Cage to Rattle was produced by Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, Niall Horan, Norah Jones) in Nashville. The album echoes past releases, but King encouraged Daughtry and his band to explore new sounds. “Backbone” has a bluesy stomp, while “Deep End,” the latest single, is led by piano.

“It was good for us to play that song because it was the catalyst for where I stand,” Daughtry said. “That was the sound we were going for on the record we wanted to make. I wanted to get that out there and see what the fans thought. They responded better than any other time we’ve played a new song. That was a good sign for us and that gave me a little more confidence.”

Daughtry enjoyed the September 2017 Ak-Chin show for more than that, though.

“I remember, in the past, it was so hot and dry there. I always thought we sounded like crap,” he said with a laugh. “I remember walking off going, ‘That actually wasn’t bad. I liked that.’

We were pretty stoked about that.”

it over the last decade together on the road and making records. We didn’t take the easy way out. Instead, Jacquire really pushed us in the studio, and we worked really hard to make the album we’ve always wanted to make. It’s everything a Daughtry record should be.”

Daughtry admits he was a little intimidated by King initially.

“I was kind of afraid that he was going to be ‘too cool for school’ for us,” Daughtry said. “I even told him, ‘You probably don’t want to work with a pop rock band like us. And he said, ‘I actually think you guys are cooler than you think. It would be really cool to make a record with you guys.’”

There were times, though, when morale collapsed during the writing of Cage to Rattle. Daughtry had someone nearby to lean on.

“My wife certainly helps with that,” he said. “My manager helps as well. I think, though, it just gets to the point where you have to just give yourself up to the process and allow it to be. I think I made it harder than it needed to be.”

Cactus League economic impact makes double-figure jump

By Jordan Kaye Saager Buch made his way to groups sitting on the lawns of Cactus League ballparks. One by one, he rattled off about 20 questions to capture information about how much they spent on their hotel, where they came from and the length of their stay.

The junior research economist at the L. William Seidman Research Institute at Arizona State’s W.P. Carey School of Business had joined a group of other ASU students to repeat this process at all 10 Cactus League stadiums.

“We tried to make sure that we hit every stadium at least twice,” Buch said. “It was funny. We had done it so much we all had our favorite spots.

So my favorite spot turned out to be the lawn where people are kind of lounging around and having a good time.”

Their goal: Collect a large enough sample size to ensure their study’s accuracy. By the end, the team had conducted these surveys 3,910 times – that’s 300 at each stadium. Once they finished, they went back to the Seidman Research Institute, logged their numbers on a spreadsheet and began analyzing the answers.

In late July, they shared the results with media. In 2018, the Cactus League generated a $373 million bump for Arizona’s gross domestic product, according to the study. Spring training had a total economic impact of $644.2 million, an 11 percent increase compared to the results of a 2015 study that was not conducted by ASU. “These figures tell the story of Arizona’s awesome power as a tourism engine,” Cactus League President Jeff Meyer said. “It emphasizes just how important we are in this community.”

Similar studies have come out from ASU before. The Carey school has produced the economic-impact reports from Super Bowls, Final Fours and college-football national championships that have landed in Phoenix.

Unlike those, the Cactus League season is an annual event.

Phoenix bids and hangs its hat on the acquisition of countless megaevents – as it did with the 2023 Super Bowl and the 2024 Final Four, which will both be played in Arizona – but it doesn’t rely on landing one. Why? Because the state gets to host one annually. “This is like two Final Fours,

and we get it every year,” said Dennis Hoffman, the director of the Seidman Research Institute. “It’s really on par with the Super Bowl. So when we have a Super Bowl, we have two Super Bowls.”

Debbie Johnson, the director of the Arizona Office of Tourism, described the Cactus League as a “tourism driver.”

For many who book their flight and hotel to attend Cactus League games, it’s a vacation. And with vacations comes spending.

up a median spending tab of $405 each day, which was largely spent on hotels, food and drink.

Attendance for the 2018 Cactus League season declined from the previous year as the schedule took a 24-game hit. Yet the average number of fans increased from 2017 – the 223game slate drew a total of 1.8 million fans, an average of 7,710 per game.

Studies like the one released Monday, which Meyer said they want to produce every other year instead of every three years, are not just a vehicle for good publicity; it’s validation.
