Defining masculinity

O

ne of the most controversial discussions today is concerning gender identity and gender roles in Western Civilization. In a world where pronouns, gender identities and the role of men and women appears to change and evolve yearly, the old school mentality of conservatives and religious evangelicals is directly battling progressives and LGTBQ+-identifying group members over the way we define “man,” “woman” and everything else under the gender vocabulary sun. While it is easy for an older generation to complain about the gender-fluid attitudes, actions and behaviors, claiming it’s confusing, how they defend bigoted attacks under a cloak of self-righteous religious dogma is where the blurry line of “having a conversation” ends and un-Christlike “hate speech” begins.

Right now, former ex-President Donald Trump lawyer and former college professor Jenna Ellis has been blowing up Twitter with her doubling down on religious rhetoric and mocking anyone not falling within her boundaries of “biblical masculinity.”

During the 2021 Olympics, Ellis decided to go to Twitter complaining about figure skater Johnny Weir’s elegant robe in Tokyo during the closing ceremonies.

On Aug. 8, 2021: “Bring back the days when boys cared about growing up to be actual men. Biblical masculin-

I hope someone told her that Jesus and his followers all wore robes, jewelry and fancy perfumes during their time walking the earth.

The term “biblical masculinity” is such an odd phrase to pull out when judging Weir’s clothing choices. If one reads the Bible, they will see that Jesus threw “traditional” or “toxic” masculinity on its head by calling his followers to leave their jobs, put other people’s rights in front of their rugged individualism, and treat their enemies as their friends. That’s not how conservatives treat their antagonists today. They mock and attempt to squash them. A movement claiming to be like Christ, they swing the sword pathetically like Peter did, instead of being the healer like Jesus was, telling Peter to put down his sword, as He restored the ear that was cut.

Ellis was a Trump critic in 2015 and 2016, but like so many of the lemmings that followed him, they’ve taken on his mantle of bullying, the most anti-Jesus behavior possible, creating division instead of unity, and forcing their targets to have to respond, usually in more articulate and loving ways.

Weir expressed this in his response: “The man I’ve grown into is a human that embraces the strength of the man & woman who raised me to be myself. If you feel squashed by the boot of someone else’s beliefs, remember you are free to live your life the way YOU believe. Also, religion isn’t an excuse for hate.”

Ellis couldn’t be bothered to apologize for her ignorant statement: “Hate [is] actually genuine love to speak to truth, not relativism and embracing every form of casual perversion under the

banner of ‘being myself’. Eventually, Johnny, you’ll have to answer to God for your choices & beliefs. Choose truth & Jesus.”

Actually, Ellis will have to account for how her love was not kind, not patient, and did not build up, as the Apostle Paul called Christians to do in 1 Corinthians. She acts as if she and her choices won’t face the Lord one day either. Her pride couldn’t be any more on display.

This topic has been dissected often over the past decade, and CBE International’s (Christians for Biblical Equality) Sandra Glahn attacked the traditional forms of biblical masculinity in a 2014 article better than I could: “What we conclude about gender-specific norms in the Bible comes from picking and choosing a set of passages and creating our own definitions. But what if we noticed only that Jacob cooked stew, Jesus cooked fish in his post-resurrection state, and the deacons served tables for widows? We might conclude that cooking and serving tables is truly masculine work, or at least that such actions have a ‘masculine feel,’ especially when we see Jesus’s rebuke of Martha for being too cooking-focused. If we step back and look at our Lord, we see that he himself is a misfit with the most-quoted definition of ‘biblical masculinity.’ And he was a misfit for the Greco-Roman world’s definition, too.”

To sum up, true “biblical masculinity” is loving our neighbor and enemies, not shaming them. It’s looking beyond our biases, finding the humanity in all people. And finally, it’s feeling secure enough in our choices that we understand we can let others make their own.

Vaccination or testing

State mandates a choice for school employees

ast week Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new policy that will require all school employees of both public and private schools to either receive a COVID-19 vaccination or be regularly tested for the virus.

“With the continuing spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, this is a commonsense step that will help ensure the safety of students and employees as schools reopen for the new year,” said Dr. César Morales, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools. “Most school employees are already vaccinated, and I’m confident others will now follow suit.”

The new policy will require teachers and all school employees to show proof of vaccination or provide COVID19 test results showing a negative result each week they are working. The policy goes into effect Aug. 12, with full compliance required by Oct. 15, 2021.

Particulars about implementation and enforcement are still being finalized, with district staff and elected school boards along with union representatives determining how the vac-

cination and testing information will be collected.

Morales said he’s been in communication with Ventura County Public Health “about ways to accommodate the increased need for testing that this policy will require.”

Several districts, including Oak Park, Moorpark Unified, Mupu, Santa Paula Unified, Simi Valley Unified and Ojai Unified have already started the school year. By Aug. 25 all districts will be in session.

The mandate also applies to charter schools.

Oxnard School District has active online portals for staff to report vaccination status or test results as well as a visual dashboard page that includes data on COVID cases. The district has reported one case each day since Aug. 8 through Aug. 12. (1) The dashboard details the areas on campus where the person with confirmed COVID spends time.

n an effort to get kids back on campus, state and local education officials along with teachers, unions, district administrators and elected school boards are flushing out what a return to school will look like and are asking parents for diligence with a sprinkling of patience.

Vaccinations are not currently required for any student to attend school.

Every school district must abide by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidelines for students returning to campus. While districts in Ventura County are offering online learning, most families are hoping for as normal a year as possible for their children.

On Aug. 2, the CDPH issued guidelines effective immediately for all public and private schools in the state.

• The stated “foundational principle of this guidance is that all students must have access to safe and full in-person instruction and to as much instructional time as possible.”

The evidence the CDPH is relying on demonstrates that physical distancing is not required, allowing a much more normal learning environment — albeit a masked one.

Mask up to stay in school

Districts are emphasizing the need to wear masks indoors as a vital way to ensure students can remain in school. As evidence continues to come out regarding the transmission methods of COVID-19, including the Delta variant, it’s understood that the virus is primarily transmitted by airborne transmission (aerosol) and less often by “droplets.”

Physical distancing is effective when droplet transmission is more common, whereas masks reduce both airborne and droplet transmission.

“Therefore, masks best promote both safety and in-person

masks indoors. Those exempted by medical condition must wear a non-restrictive alternative, such as a face shield. Exemptions are pursuant to state and federal guidelines.

Adults must wear a mask indoors when in the same space as students.

Masks are optional outdoors.

Schools must have a process to provide face coverings to students who may not have one with them on campus.

If students refuse to wear a mask, schools are encouraged to provide alternative learning options.

This approach of universal mask wearing regardless of vaccination status also addresses the likelihood of future variants and eases the strain on school staff who would otherwise have to track and enforce who must wear a mask or who has the option to go maskless. Stigma in a school setting has also been considered. If every child and adult must wear a mask, no one is singled out.

These guidelines and transmission conditions will be assessed continually and by Nov. 1 will determine whether a change to mask requirements is appropriate.

Tips, rules for recycling success at large events

by David Goldstein ast weekend, for the first time in over a year, I attended a large public event. Being in a crowd felt unfamiliar and a little frightening, as thousands of people filled Camarillo’s Constitution Park with their lawn chairs and picnic dinners for an outdoor concert featuring Twisted Gypsy, a talented and energetic Fleetwood Mac tribute band.

The continuous stream of well-known hits, the lead singer’s vocal and dance imitations of Stevie Nicks, and the rockin’ keyboards of a Christine McVie character were not the only familiar recycling at the event.

Although most people packed out their own waste, rather than trying to wade their way through the crowd to the park’s containers, the event still collected two threecubic-yard bins of recyclables and two full bins of the same size for garbage.

Recycling bins, and intermediate containers facilitating the use of those bins, at public events is not just a basic public service. It is also a legal requirement in some cases. Local ordinances require recycling at public events in most cities, and organizers of events charging more than 2,000 people for admission are required by state law to provide recycling service. In fact, California Assembly Bill 2176, passed in 2004, requires organizers of all events expected to draw over 2,000 paid attendees to submit plans to their city or county recycling coordinator for approval before the event and to report waste and recycling results afterwards.

The three main refuse and recycling companies serving Ventura County provide not just final bins for collection, but also intermediate containers for special events.

Charging around $7 per container, they provide cardboard boxes with lids and labels for trash and recyclables.

Containers are reusable if kept clean with plastic liners.

The city of Oxnard, which hauls garbage through municipal service, offers free containers to facilitate event recycling in the city, although large event service has not yet resumed following COVID-19 social distancing protocols. Better than cardboard boxes, Oxnard uses ClearStream containers, which are metal frames holding a labeled lid on top and suspending a clear bag underneath, so contamination and fill-levels can be easily monitored.

The city of Ventura’s Environmental Services Division and the city of Thousand Oaks’ Public Works Department also loan ClearStream containers to special event organizers in their cities.

Labeling and lids are keys to the public event recycling success. Containers should be labeled on sides and lids. More importantly, lids for boxes collecting bottles and cans should have small circular holes. Some people do not read English and many people do not bother to read signs in any language, so it is important for recycling containers to look different from garbage cans. A round hole at the top not only is a visual cue; it impedes the disposal of some types of garbage.

Similarly crucial for avoiding contamination of recyclables is placing garbage cans next to recycling containers. Making it slightly more convenient to use a garbage 8—

Within the next few years, a new state requirement will apply to large events. In addition to recycling cans, bottles and cardboard, event organizers will be required to divert food waste from landfills. Leftover food good enough to be fed to people must be recovered for that purpose, and remaining food must be sent to a compost facility.

The most unusual recycling from a local event came from a Civil War reenactment. Over a three-day period, several hundred people feverishly poured gunpowder from finger-sized paper pouches into replica rifles so they could point at an opposing army, make a loud noise, and watch smoke curl upward. The pouches littered battlefields, even after the Union and Confederate “dead” had risen and gone back to their respective campsites. After the event, organizers combed the grounds, collected the paper, and added it to bins filled with the crowds’ cans and bottles, bound for a recycling center.

The biggest single waste item from an event was from a golf tournament at the Lake Sherwood Country Club.

The PGA event there last year did not include public attendance, but in previous years, organizers used green carpet to protect turf in areas of high foot traffic. After the event, to keep this barely used carpet from a landfill, event organizers transported these carpets to a Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Simi Valley or Oxnard. Early next year, a new ReStore will open in Simi Valley, making re-sale of gently used items like this an even more convenient option.

Oil company seeks fracking permit in Sespe Wilderness According to a project description online at the Ventura County Planning Department website, Carbon California Company LLC has applied to be allowed to re-work three existing oil and gas wells, which if the county allows it will then be stimulated with the controversial process of hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” and acid stimulation. The project is located in the Sespe Wilderness north of Fillmore at an existing oil and gas lease.

The project is tentatively scheduled for a planning director hearing at 10 a.m. on Aug. 26 that is open to the public. The meeting is slated to take place virtually on Zoom.

The Conditional Use Permit (CUP) governing the lease last approved in 1993 included the drilling of five new wells that were never drilled.

The county has a description stating “time extension” in the tentative schedule, but the application adds fracking and acid stimulation to the permit.

CSUCI students get iPad Air bundle For Fall 2021, all first-year and new transfer students at California State University, Channel Islands will receive a brand new iPad Air, Apple Pencil and Apple Smart Keyboard Folio on loan for the time they are enrolled at CSUCI. All new students have the opportunity to opt into the program across eight campuses in the state system as part of an effort to build equity in connectivity. Jump in aircraft activity through Aug. 30 at navy base Officials at Navy Base Ventura County, Point Mugu have reported that residents of Camarillo and Oxnard should expect increased jet noise and aircraft activity through Aug. 30.

Beginning Aug. 12, about 35 additional aircraft will be moving onto the base grounds to support multiple test events and unit-level training for pilots and aircrews on the Point Mugu Sea Range.

Moorpark parent appointed to state PTA Laura Hawk-Loya of Moorpark has been elected to serve as treasurer of the California State Parent-Teacher Association.

She has served on local PTAs at her children’s schools in Moorpark from elementary to high school and eventually served as president of the Moorpark Council of PTAs as treasurer of the 12th district of PTAs. Hawk-Loya assisted the Moorpark Unified School District in transitioning to online learning in response to the pandemic and ensuring that PTAs are ready this year as students return.

Grade change option available State offers pass/no pass

t’s no secret that some students did not do well over a year of online learning. As school districts, teachers and families grappled with finding the resources needed to set up school via screens, many students struggled — and found less-than-desirable grades on their records at the end of the 2020-21 academic year. A poor grade doesn’t only affect a student’s self esteem. At the high school level, it can alter graduation credits and lower a student’s overall grade point average, which can impact college admissions and scholarship eligibility.

One option available to students may have felt like a secret to some, as word of it trickled out and, in some cases, was released in Ventura County after the state-mandated deadline.

The passage of Assembly Bill 104 occurred during the summer, when most school district staff were on vacation.

AB104 approved

On July 1, 2021 Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 104, passed through an urgency legislative process.

AB104 has three main components to help students that need it. Those changes involve grade retention (repeating a grade), a grade change option and graduation requirements.

The new law “give[s] students opportunities to counteract the negative impact of the pandemic on academic achievement and graduation credits,” said Dr. Consuelo Hernandez Williams, associate superintendent of student services for the Ventura County Office of Education.

First, AB104 requires that school districts allow parents or legal guardians, or a student aged 18 or over, to request that a grade be changed from a letter grade to a Pass (A,B,C,D) or No Pass (F) designation.

This grading change option is important, because many colleges and universities, including some of the top schools in the state, have modified acceptable policies for the current and near future admittance years (through 2023-24 admittance year), which would mean that a pass/no pass grade would not negatively impact a student’s admission to that school, whereas a poor grade would pull down a GPA and could impact admission.

Current law prohibits any grade changes after they have been assigned, notwithstanding a clerical error or bad faith process. This law creates a method to request a grade change only to pass/no pass.

This could be a game changer for many, who may have received a D in a class required for college admission.

Generally, a college would demand a passing grade (C- or higher) for a required class.

AB104 requires that the grade change take place when it is requested.

All University of California and California State colleges are participating as well as several private schools, such as Stanford University and University of Southern California. (1) Second, the new law requires districts to allow the submission of requests for a student to be retained (held back) in the same grade they were in over the past year, and the

district must provide the option of a retention consultation within 30 days to those who request it. If the student is not retained, credit recovery options for classes in which the student received low grades must be offered. Retainment requests can only be submitted for students who “received deficient grades, as specified, for at least 1/2 of the pupil’s coursework, except for pupils enrolled in grade 12 during the 2020–21 academic year.” (2) And finally, AB104 exempts high school students impacted by the pandemic from having to complete extra graduation requirements a district or school may have that are in addition to the state’s graduation requirements that would, due to pandemic causes, require the student to now attend high school for a total of five years. Students eligible for this provision must have been in their third or fourth year of high school during the 2020-21 year, and are “not on track to graduate in [four] years.”

This leniency allows students to graduate even if they have not completed certain district/school-specific requirements that the state does not also require for graduation.

It should be noted, however, that by reducing school or district graduation requirements, a student may not meet the basic admission requirements for certain colleges or universities. Some districts are recommending that students complete courses at a community college in order to meet those requirements after high school graduation.

Parents, legal guardians and students aged 18 and over can submit these requests.

Deadlines missed, some extended

The law mandates that school districts were to have posted information on AB104 on their websites no later than Aug. 2.

This is important, because the law then gives families

and students two weeks from the date posted to apply for a grade change or request retention, and states that no applications will be accepted after the deadlines — although districts have discretion to set their own deadlines that grant more time.

Schermer explained that local districts are “keeping track of requests at a local level to ensure timelines are met.”

For example, Ojai Unified School District notified families of Nordhoff High School students on Aug. 9 via email and are giving students until Aug. 31 to request a grade change.

He also said that each district is maintaining records and processing the requests received. VCOE did not have informaiton on how many requests for grade changes had been received in the county so far.

Ventura Unified is allowing a longer time frame with a statement on its website reporting “once high school counselors return from Summer Break in mid August, VUSD will actively reach out to all high school students/parents/ guardians from the 2020-21 school year to inform them of the option to request a ‘Pass’ or ‘No Pass’ for any and all coursework taken during Semester 1 and 2 of last year.”

n the air and on the ground, there’s so much to see and do at the 40th Annual Wings Over Camarillo Air Show, Car Show and STEM Pavilion. Employment in STEM fields is expected to increase 8.8% by 2028, compared to 3.7% for all other occupations, and we must prepare our youth for the new technologies that will lead us into the next century. Guests can get out of the sun and have fun visiting all the different exhibitors with hands-on activities. All aircraft will be on display for a closer look, as well as some aircraft display models including a Thunderbolt II, a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, a Lockheed C-130J Hercules and others.

Also on the ground, but lifting spirits just the same, is the classic car show and the 82nd Airborne Division 505th Reenactment Camp, which will stage a “full-on armor and infantry reenactment involving tanks, halftrack, trucks, jeeps and motorcycles.”

Wings Over Camarillo is hosted by the Camarillo Wings Association, a nonprofit corporation that promotes aviation and its heritage, as well as the Commemorative Air Force SoCal Wing, the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 723, and the Ventura County Ninety-Nines. “The Camarillo Wings Association distributes the Air Show net profits to participating non-profit groups that promote youth in science and aviation, furthering the education of Ventura County youth through leadership and service.”

African drummer Dramane Koné to perform in Ojai

rowing up in the West African nation of Burkina Faso, the musician Dramane Koné witnessed the power of a community coming together in joy and sorrow to uplift each other.

“I remember people helping each other,” he said. “If anybody needs help, hundreds of people will go to help one person . . . When we give each other help, whether it’s a ceremony or celebration, we play music to celebrate . . . When somebody’s sick, we play music to heal them.

Sometimes we go to the field for harvesting food, and we play music to accompany them to make them feel good so they won’t get tired.”

Koné plans to bring that same communal spirit of unity, healing and joy to his performance at the Ojai Art Center on Thursday, Aug. 26, where audience participation will be encouraged, ranging from clapping and singing to drumming and dancing. A suggested donation is $20 at the door.

African street foods, wine and kombucha will be provided Koné’s riveting rhythms have captivated the attention of celebrities. In addition to performing with Stevie Wonder, Koné has been a featured musician on Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul Sessions and on a TEDx Hollywood Talk, which contrasted the collective spirit and technology of drumming with the isolation of contemporary digital technology. Having performed with Shakira at the World Cup in 2010 and in a music video with Beyoncé, Koné also played background music for the soundtrack to the film Black Panther and will do the same for the forthcoming Babylon starring Brad Pitt. He is as famous in the boardroom as on the stage and is often called upon to facilitate team-building corporate events.

Though he plays many instruments, including the guitar, the talking drum and the African xylophone known as the balafon, Koné’s favorite instrument is the djembe drum, which he has been playing for 37 years.

Explaining why he prefers this instrument, Koné said, “Djembe, and music in general, makes people happy. It heals people, and the world needs healing.

As griots (bards), Koné’s talented, multi-generational family transmits the musical and oral storytelling traditions of the region. Koné is the son of the master drummer and musical griot Dougoutigui Koné, with whom he trained as a child.

“My whole family tells history through our music,” he said. “Now I watch the documentary and show it to my children, and say, ‘Look what I did, I carried on with

my heritage, the family heritage.’ I go to Africa every two or three years. I was there two months ago, visiting relatives and playing music with them. It’s a legacy, my family legacy.”

As a resident of Long Beach, Koné now teaches drum lessons throughout Southern California and also travels worldwide to share his culture with others.

hen back-to-school time rolls around, many parents face it with a mixture of relief and dread. Finally — a little peace and quiet around the house!

On the other hand . . . it’s a return to the early-morning rush, the carpool shuffle and haggling over homework. Getting everyone up and out the door might feel even more challenging after months on end of working and learning from home.

Getting takeout for dinner is one way to relieve some of that pressure. And while there’s always pizza, consider moving it up a notch with meal deals from local restaurants. Many full-sized meals for the whole family can be ordered, picked up and served at home in minutes. It won’t necessarily make the mornings any easier, but it will give you some breathing room at the end of a busy day — and perhaps put you in a more relaxed space as the family adjusts to another “new” normal.

A close friend and I spend a lot of time discussing her issues with her boyfriend. I’m always there for her, even late at night when she’s upset about something. However, when I bring up someone I’m interested in, she’ll cut me off or say she just can’t listen to me talk about the guy. Is it petty to feel hurt and to expect more from her?

— Disturbed There are friends you can count on — and friends you can count on to fake their own kidnapping the moment you are the slightest bit in need.

This sort of “friend” can be hard to identify because we want to believe their friendship is based on more than seeing us as an easy mark. This isn’t to say we lack the psychological tools to identify and deal appropriately with users posing as friends. As humans began living in groups, we evolved to have a social “loss prevention team” — the psychological version of the squad department stores have to catch crafty shoppers who get nine months pregnant in a matter of minutes, uh, with 26 designer dresses.

Our minds are tuned for “cheater detection,” to notice sneaky nonreciprocators — people who intentionally take more than they give — explain evolutionary psychologists Leda Cosmides and John Tooby. The police force of our cheater detection system is our emotions: anger and resentment and other gloom-eristic feelings that rise up when we’re giving and giving and being shafted by somebody who’s all take.

That said, friendship isn’t always 50/50, and it’s important to identify when a good friend is temporarily unable to act like one because they’re going through a rough patch.

Unless that’s the case here, your emotions are telling you the balance of give and take between you is just not right.

Now, maybe she’s just a selfish taker and things will never be right. Then again, you could explain that you feel shorted and give her a chance to right the balance. Even good people sometimes act like crap people. As I see it, one job of a real friend is to put us on notice when we’re falling short. This gives us the chance to make the requisite sacrifices to be a good friend to them — like by dragging our emotional immaturity out back and slaughtering it like a goat on a stone altar (uh, the condo patio).

I’m having this undefined thing with this great woman I see just about nightly. She ended a toxic relationship seven months ago, and I’m still recovering from a terrible breakup. We’re great friends, crack each other up, are extremely honest with each other, and have great sex. Should we try to label this?

I worry this free love/no-strings-attached approach can’t last.

Commitment serves a similar boundary-establishing function, though out of the worry that one’s partner will sneak over to the hot neighbor’s for a nooner, not lunch on them with a side of purse dog. Also, once two people spell out that they’re a “we,” the parameters of decision-making expand accordingly: “What works for us?” instead of “What’s best for me?”

But sometimes, people still licking their wounds from their last relationship have the close-to-perfect next partner show up inopportunely early. They could push that person away with “I’m not ready now,” which could turn out to be “goodbye forever.” Or...maybe they could have a “not-quite-sure-what-thisis” thing until they feel ready for a relationship again.

There’s a challenge to this loosey-goosey approach, and it’s how disturbed we humans are by uncertainty: a lack of information about what might happen. The murky unknown revs up feelbad emotions like anxiety and dread over our inability to narrow down the various ways things could go toiletward.

Different people have varying levels of what psychologist Mark H. Freeston and his colleagues describe as “intolerance of uncertainty.” To decrease yours (and the angsty feelings that come with), spell out what you can — a likely worst-case scenario: for example, a woman you’ve grown attached to tires of you and takes to Tinder like a duck to those little goldfish crackers. Painful, yes. But, as you’ve shown, survivable — if temporarily deadly to the ego.

Understanding this should help you avoid any temptation to rush things — possibly blowing up the relationship in an attempt to relieve the tension of uncertainty. To help yourself stay on the straight and ambiguous, keep in mind that this uncertainty-alleviating impulse is the business model for horror movies. Without it, they’d be horrifying bores that fizzle out at the three-minute mark — when the teens hear unearthly growls coming from the basement of the abandoned house and one says to the rest: “Yeah, whatevs. Let’s just stay here upstairs playing strip chess.” (c)2021, Amy Alkon, all rights reserved.
