West-MEC reopens for the new academic year

The fi rst week of August, West-MEC, a career and technical education district in the Valley, welcomed students on all four of its campuses for the 2021-22 school year.

There was a signifi cant infl ux of students, and the enrollment numbers for the academic year 2021-22 are strong, with wait lists in some programs across campuses, said Troy Gabaldon, central campus administrator. The programs offered are taught by industry experts and help prepare students for valuable certifi cation and industry credential exams.

“We look forward to teaching students relevant skill sets and engaging with the local community through events, externships and more,” Gabaldon said.

West-MEC programs are based on in-demand industry skills and open opportunities to various pathways, including direct employment, further education and entrepreneurship. Apart from the hands-on learning, students are trained in leadership and professionalism skills.

Being a public school district, WestMEC serves more than 48 schools with over 37,000 students through all four campuses and career technical education programs on home school campuses.

Hauraa Alsilawi of Glendale has been named to the dean’s list for the 2021 spring semester at the University of New England.

Dean’s list students have attained a grade-point average of 3.3 or better out of a possible 4.0 at the end of the semester.

The University of New England is Maine’s largest private university, featuring two campuses in Maine, a vibrant campus in Tangier, Morocco, and an array of innovative offerings online.

Its hands-on, experiential approach empowers students to join the next generation of leaders in their chosen fi elds. It is home to Maine’s only medical and dental colleges; a variety of other interprofessionally aligned health care programs; and nationally recognized degree paths in the marine sciences, the natural and social sciences, business, the humanities and the arts.
