Cardinals, State Farm send students to nation’s capital

s part of the state’s Civics Matters Arizona program, the Arizona Cardinals partnered with State Farm to send 241 students and 30 chaperone teachers on an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. The students, who are entering grades 9-12, represented 46 Arizona schools, 20 school districts, 11 cities and four counties.

While at the nation’s capital, the group attended multiple workshops while also touring historical landmarks such as Arlington National Cemetery, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, Capitol Hill and the Smithsonian National Museum.

They also visited the memorials honor-

ing Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

For Cardinals Chief People Officer Shaun Mayo, the initiative, which spawned from a conversation between team owner Michael Bidwell and Gov. Doug Ducey, fell perfectly in line with the three pillars of what the Cardinals try to be as an organization — a championship team on the field, a champion in the community, and an overall championship organization.

rizona Autism Charter Schools Inc., the only autism-focused charter network in the state of Arizona, is hoping to attract students from throughout the West Valley to its new Peoria campus.

Set for its first day of school Monday, Aug. 1, Arizona Autism Charter Schools (AZACS) will welcome 120 students from kindergarten through fourth grade.

“The new AZACS West Valley Campus is a dream come true in so many ways,” said Diana Diaz-Harrison, AZACS found-

er and executive director. “It will help students and families who currently commute at least one hour one way to attend school at our main Central Phoenix campus.

“Additionally, it will make our specialized program for children with autism more accessible to students and families in the West Valley, who have been hungry for more school choice options on that side of town. With 1 in 41 children diagnosed with autism in our state, we know our school will make a huge impact in this community.”

The purchase of the campus was made possible by a $17 million bond financing

project funded by the Maricopa County Industrial Development Authority.

GESD hosted a "Grab, Gab and Go" drive-thru welcome event for new teachers sponsored by the Glendale Uniting Students, Teachers, and Others (GUSTO) Foundation. As they drove through the District Office parking lot, teachers were greeted with welcoming cheers from Superintendent Segotta-Jones and GESD administrators. They also received breakfast burritos from Sr. Ozzy's Tacos Y Mariscos and a cart full of classroom supplies.

Diaz-Harrison opened her flagship campus in 2014. The location in Central Phoenix allowed AZACS to reach a larger population of children with a need for specialized schooling.

“I really wanted a school that was above and beyond compliance-driven public schools,” she said. “I wanted a school that was aiming for higher no matter where a child fell on the spectrum. I did everything from district schools to private schools but noticed that there wasn’t really a good choice within the school choice charter sector that focused on this growing population.

“Because of this gap in exceptional programming in a school setting for kids with autism, I was inspired by my son and hundreds of other kids that were just forced to be in schools that were not a good fit.”

Despite having opened the first location in Phoenix, Diaz-Harrison said it was always her “dream” to open a school in the West Valley. Inspired both by her son, who has autism, and

communities to help make a positive change. A lot of that was the inspiration — our continuing commitment to the community and figuring out ways to utilize our assets to really do good in the community.”

For the trip, the Cardinals provided their team plane to transport the group to Washington, D.C. Mayo said putting the trip together and getting to see the response was incredibly rewarding.

Mayo said for many of the students on board, it was their first time having been on a plane. Others had never even been out of the state before.

“It is some of the most rewarding work that we do, is anytime we get an opportunity to really impact the community or impact the future,” he said.

“It always feels great to be able to be a small part of hopefully making a positive difference in anyone’s life that we impacted. The work we do in the community is so important to the fabric of our organization that it’s just super,

super rewarding.”

Mayo said he sees many of these students using this experience as a motivator to get involved in their communities.

“The relationships and the friendships that were formed, I believe, will last a lifetime,” he said. “I believe that this trip has inspired several of them to potentially get involved at a deeper level in their communities. …

When I look at some of the feedback from the students, some of this probably changed their perspective, in terms of the role that they play in their local communities.”

The experience also featured some star-studded guests. At the send-off event at 44th Street Station, the team’s entire rookie class, as well as DeAndre Hopkins, made appearances. Mayo said the superstar wide receiver hung around with the students for about 30 or 45 minutes.

“We’re just excited to be able to provide that experience for folks and get

them up close and personal with one of our players,” Mayo said. “He took all of the attention pages when he showed up to the events. I know they were super excited about it.”

Isaac Morales, one of the 241 students who took part in the trip, said if given the opportunity he would absolutely do it again.

“It was a very nice experience,” said Morales, 14. “(Washington, D.C.) was really beautiful. I loved looking at the memorials and the museum, so it was really amazing.

“I feel like it was a good opportunity for people to learn about the government and get a chance to explore and learn more about our history.”

Morales is very appreciative of the Cardinals for having put this together and giving him this opportunity.

“I’m really grateful that they were able to give me this opportunity and let me be able to explore and learn more about the government and about many memorials and museums,” he said.

Mayo said he is very appreciative of the sponsors for the event. Along with State Farm, Chicanos Por La Causa, Arizona Public Service, Raza Development Fund and Greater Phoenix Leadership all provided funding for the trip.

“We could not have done it without their help and support,” Mayo said.

Not only is this something the Cardinals organization plans to do in the future, Mayo said he sees this as an annual event.

“I think our vision is that we can do this year after year and continue to impact close to 250 students and 30 teachers,” he said. “We have 288 seats on that plane, so I think the goal is to fill it up every year, take a group out, hopefully get them educated, interested, inspired, empowered, related to getting involved in the local community.

“That’s where we believe that change happens in each local community. Our goal is to fill (the team plane) up every single year and do this over and over and over again, as long as possible.”

GOP senators grill federal judgeship nominee

epublican senators this month grilled Arizona attorney Roopali Desai, a nominee to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, over her history of working for progressive causes and her work fighting claims of 2020 election fraud.

Many were like Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who voiced concerns during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing for Desai about her ability to be an impartial judge after her work in “an area of the law that really requires you to wear a jersey” for one side or the other.

Desai, who would be the first South Asian to serve on the circuit if confirmed, repeatedly told senators that while she has worked as an advocate, as a judge she would be “committed to the rule of law and to implementing the Supreme Court’s precedent.”

“I am committed to following the law objectively and without interjection of any of my personal or political views in any case that is presented before me if I am so fortunate to be confirmed,” Desai told the committee.

While she acknowledged that “some of my clients have been affiliated with Democratic causes,” she has also represented large corporations, Fortune 500 companies and the government.

Desai was nominated by President Joe Biden in June to fill the Arizona seat on the circuit court that is being vacated by Judge Andrew Hurwitz. It’s the seat previously held by Judge Mary Schroeder, the first female chief judge in the circuit for whom Desai once clerked.

The 9th Circuit is the largest in the nation, handling appeals from 15 federal districts, ranging from Arizona to Montana, Alaska to Guam, and all the states and territories in between.

The daughter of South Asian immigrants, Desai was born in Toronto but grew up in Glendale and received her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Arizona. She is currently a partner at Coppersmith Brockelman in Phoenix, which specializes in civil litigation, civil appeals and polit-

She has won several awards for her work as a litigator and was named one of USA Today’s 12 Women of the Year for 2022, alongside gymnast Simone Biles and Vice President Kamala Harris.

In introducing Desai on July 13, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Arizona, called her “one of the most experienced and respected lawyers and litigators in the state.” She noted statements of support have come from groups representing civil rights and human rights law to groups representing police and firefighters.

One letter of support came from Alexander Kolodin, an attorney who opposed Desai in lawsuits challenging the 2020 election results and the state Senate’s much-maligned audit of the election.

“Having faced the very best litigators the other side has to offer, I can tell you with confidence — nobody else holds a candle to Ms. Desai,” wrote Kolodin, who said he had seen her advocate for clients “by making originalist arguments that might have come from Justice (Clarence) Thomas’ pen.”

But Desai’s involvement in the election lawsuits was just one of the issues senators wanted to ask her about on July 13.

Desai defended Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in a case brought by voting rights groups that tried to force later registration deadlines during the COVID-19 pandemic. She also represented Hobbs after former President Donald Trump’s campaign sued the secretary of state, the Maricopa County recorder and others, claiming fraud in Maricopa County during the 2020 election. The claims were eventually dropped.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, burrowed in on Desai’s brief supporting the Democratic National Committee in Brnovich v. DNC, a case in which the U.S. Supreme Court last year upheld Arizona’s ban on ballot collection by third parties. Desai’s brief argued that bans on “ballot harvesting” suppress the vote of minority groups, a position Cruz challenged citing a 2005 report by former President Jimmy Carter and former Secretary of State James Bakers that called mail-in ballots “the largest source of potential voter fraud.”

Desai told Cruz only that if confirmed as a judge she would be “committed to the rule of law and to implementing the Supreme Court’s precedent.”

She gave essentially the same answer to Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, when he questioned her about her support for a Phoenix law that would have forced

a calligraphy and stationery business to produce wedding invitations for samesex couples. The owners of Brush & Nib Studio claimed the law violated what Lee called the owners’ “sincerely held religious beliefs.” The Arizona Supreme Court ruled in the company’s favor in 2019.

When pressed by Lee, Desai again said she “would faithfully and fully apply the precedent of the United States Supreme Court in the 9th Circuit” as a judge.

Republicans seemed more concerned

by Desai’s advocacy, which includes service for the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Cannabis Roundtable and Just Communities Arizona, which seeks to end mass incarceration. Cruz noted she is on the board of Save Our Schools, which advocates against school vouchers — something Cruz supports.

“As an American you have the right to express your First Amendment rights,” Cruz said. “Your job as a judge is different.”

It’s one area where the two agreed: Desai said the roles of judge and advocate are “starkly different” and she would respect that difference.

Not all the questioning was tough, however. Some of it was not even questioning: Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., prefaced his remarks by telling Desai and another nominee that “you can rest, because I just want to talk to you for a few minutes. I don’t have any questions.”

“Ms. Desai, you are this immigrant.

You give a testimony to one of the great notes within this symphony of America,” Booker said. “I want you to know I will vote for you, and it will be an enthusiastic vote.”

Man dies after crashing vehicle into wall

25-year-old is dead after being found unrestrained in the driver’s seat of a vehicle following multiple collisions early in the morning on July 20.

Just after midnight, Vicente Hernandez was traveling south on N. 75th Avenue from Union Hills in a 2005 Chevy truck when the car drifted and hit the concrete median.

As Hernandez continued driving south, the vehicle struck vegetation before crossing lanes and hitting the west side of the roadway block wall.

The truck continued to hit vegetation as it headed south until it struck a city light pole and caused it to crash on the ground. Hernandez’s truck reentered the road and spun out of control until it came to a halt.

Arizona ‘victim’ just another curious ‘Sign of the Times’

his column previously suggested The New York Times could improve its accuracy by amending the longtime front-page slogan “All the news that’s fit to print.”

Now the so-called “newspaper of record” has again offered fresh evidence that it really features “All the news that fits its agenda.”

And the Times does so with a sympathetic profile of a curious figure who used to call Arizona home.

Former Queen Creek resident Ray Epps, who initially appeared among the Top 20 of the FBI’s “most wanted” for the unrest at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and who was characterized as a “pre-planner” of the siege in the Times-produced video documen-

tary about the events of that day, now gets a dramatic makeover in a recent story written by reporter Alan Feuer.

The July 13 edition of The New York Times features a headline that spells out what that publication has just “discovered” about Epps’ nonprosecution. “‘It’s Just Been Hell’: Life as the Victim of a Jan. 6 Conspiracy Theory” presents readers with two value judgments in one headline. First, Ray Epps is a “victim”; second, anyone who questions his role or the events of that day is a believer in a “conspiracy theory.”

The subheading goes even further in this effort to persuade instead of inform.

It reads, “Ray Epps became the unwitting face of an attempt by proTrump forces to promote the baseless idea that the FBI was behind the attack on the Capitol.”

Let’s translate the above from the “Progressive Press Stylebook,” shall we?

What the Times is really feeding us is the following blather: Ray Epps is an entirely blameless, innocent man.

This “gentle giant” was shocked to learn his well-intentioned but admittedly misguided trip from Arizona to Washington would be used by extremists so enthralled by Donald Trump that they would ignore the pure and noble motives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, an organization beyond reproach and so committed to true justice it would never dream of seeking to entrap American citizens in question-

able activities.

That “translation” is only a slight exaggeration.

What is greatly exaggerated is the style of Alan Feuer’s reportage to reposition Ray Epps “on the side of the angels” — in other words, with the Times and its political allies.

The writer goes to great lengths to “reimagine” Ray Epps as “a man whose life has been ruined by a Jan. 6 conspiracy theory.” Also “reimagined” is the video of Epps on the evening of Jan. 5, when he shouted out to Trump supporters gathered at Black Lives Matter Plaza. Here’s the way Alan Feuer recounts it: “During the event, he (Epps) was videotaped by a rightwing provocateur encouraging people to go inside the Capitol on Jan. 6 in what he described, even at the time, as

88 metrics in 10 categories of competitiveness,” all to crown America’s best states for business and 10 worst states in which to live.

On the positive side, Arizona ranked 34th for business. On the negative side, we’re dead last in states to call home.

CNBC correspondent Scott Cohn’s Arizona write-up started off with a super clever “It’s a dry heat” reference before knocking the state for having “some of the worst air quality in the nation,” which stresses our “poor health care system, short on hospital beds and staff.”

In a nod at balance, Scotty touted Arizona’s “stunning natural beauty and top-notch cultural and recreational attractions.” However, “that comes at a stiff price in America’s worst state to

live in.”

I contacted Scott to discuss his hometown, the hippie dippie central California enclave of Santa Cruz. Just FYI, in Santa Cruz the average monthly rent on a studio apartment doubled over the last year to $2,500, according to the website Zumper.

Santa Cruz’s violent crime rate is 31% higher than Arizona’s, according to the Best Places website, while the property crime rate is 12% higher.

Of course, all the maiming and stealing may be explained by Santa Cruz’s stratospheric cost of living — approximately double Arizona’s, according to Best Places.

Sadly, Scott did not get back to me before my deadline. I hope he’s OK, living in such a hellhole.

As far as the CNBC survey, I’m of two minds.

One, let’s hope the 100,000 people

planning a move to Arizona this year read it and stay home. All that migration is driving up the cost of housing and goods, plus hurting everything from traffic to air quality to the wait time between holes on one of Arizona’s 500 golf courses.

Then there’s my other theory, which explains the mystery of Arizona being ranked so miserably, yet remaining so popular to new residents.

It’s simple: While CNBC’s “unprecedented 88 metrics” sound impressive, their made-up criteria have zero to do with why people choose a home.

Put simply, their analysis is all about the brain, crunching “empirical data,” while human beings choose homes with the heart.

When was the last time you asked someone, “Hey, what brought you to Arizona?” only to have them respond,

CNBC state rankings say a lot about the network

his week we ponder the greatest mystery in the 110-year history of the Grand Canyon State.

No, not how does a noxious fraud like Kari Lake lead the Republican gubernatorial field in 2022, according to multiple polls.

I’m talking about Arizona’s other great mystery.

Namely, if this state is such a wretched place to live — as proclaimed yet again recently by the folks at CNBC television — then why do so many people keep moving here?

My hypothesis follows, but first we should delve into CNBC’s analysis, released last week.

As the network tells it, “We put the states through an unprecedented

a form of peaceful protest.”

It’s more than passing curiosity that Feuer describes the person recording the video as a “right-wing provocateur” but fails to detail the crowd’s reaction to Epps. Those gathered responded to his call, “Tomorrow we need to go into the Capitol — into the Capitol!” with shock. They respond, “What? No!” Then, they accuse Epps of being a provocateur himself. “Fed, fed, fed, fed,” they shout… but the reporter doesn’t mention it.

Sadly, modern journalism has exchanged accuracy for advocacy. “Who, what, when, where, why and how” have been replaced by the “power of narrative,” delivered with the passion, and often the premeditated imprecision, of a partisan political perspective.

With increasing regularity, the goal of such coverage is to portray conservative policies, pursuits and politicians as targets worthy of unremitting invective.

Objectivity has been abandoned, and that abandonment has been championed.

Of course, The New York Times isn’t alone in this effort.

No less a prominent practitioner of “modern journalism” than Lester Holt,

the anchor of “NBC Nightly News,” added his energy, advocacy and alleged insight to the cause when he stated in 2021 that “fairness is overrated.”

And more recently, the Pulitzer Prize Board refused to revoke the joint award it bestowed on the New York Times and the Washington Post in 2018 for articles concerning — as the board states it — “Russian interference in the U.S. election and its connections to the Trump campaign.” Never mind the fact that in March of 2019, the Mueller Report found no evidence Donald Trump colluded with Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

Facts… full reporting… fairness… who needs ’em?

Just a free society, filled with citizens who yearn to remain free.

And now objectivity is passé… it’s just so … so … so 20th century!

But it’s worth remembering the 20th was called “The American Century.”

Don’t bet on the same description for the 21st.

It’s the same with TV channels.

Maybe that’s why CNBC ranks 44th in the TV ratings, right behind Nick Jr., and with half the audience of the Game Show Network.

I guess it’s tricky to outdraw Gene Rayburn and reruns of “Match Game” — even though Gene’s been dead since 1999. Apparently, fake state rankings aren’t doing the trick.

“Well, I ranked my top choices on 88 metrics, like inclusiveness in state laws, including protections against discrimination of all kinds, as well as voting rights.”

People move to Arizona for exactly six reasons. A job. Family. The weather.

And also: the weather, the weather, the weather.

Cable networks can say what they want, but Arizona apparently has the essential qualities people seek in a home. Humans are fickle that way, fall-

Housing supply balancing back to pre-pandemic numbers

n June 2022, 343 MLS listing sales closed in Glendale and 301 in Peoria.

Not counting properties already under contract or pending close of escrow, there are 664 active and available listings in MLS in Glendale and 585 active listings in Peoria. In total, there are 13,157 active listings in Maricopa County, and we have almost two months’ worth of housing sales inventory for the first time since June 2019.

According to The Cromford Report, the average number of days a listing spent on the market in Maricopa County increased from 24.06 days in May to 28.05 days in June. While this is the

first increase in days on the market that we have seen since July 2020, it is not uncommon to see days on the market increase during the summer months.

In June, 45% of Maricopa County listings sold for over the listing price, down from 57% of May’s sales. The closing price per square foot also decreased slightly from $318.46 in May to $315.58 in June.

According to Freddie Mac, as of July 14, National Mortgage Rates reported U.S. weekly averages of 5.51% for a 30-year fixed, 4.67% for a 15-year

fixed, and 4.35% for a 5-year ARM. According to ShowingTime, the platform Realtors use to schedule most of the MLS showings, the number of showings scheduled in Peoria dropped 16.7% from May to June, while Glendale only saw a 9% reduction in the number of showings. Listings in the $400,000-$599,000 range accounted for 44% of Peoria showings and 49% of Glendale showings.

Not all showings are scheduled through ShowingTime, so actual numbers are typically higher.

According to MLS statistics, 70% of Maricopa County buyers financed their home purchase in June, while the rest paid cash. This number remains unchanged from last month.

Buyers using a conventional mortgage to buy a three-bedroom detached house with two bathrooms paid a minimum of $280,000 in Maricopa County, $360,000 in Glendale, and $365,000 in Peoria. Conventional financing made up 74.7% of June’s financed sales.

In June, FHA buyers in Maricopa County paid a minimum of $230,990 for a detached home with three bedrooms and two baths. Peoria FHA buyers paid a minimum of $365,000, and Glendale FHA buyers paid $350,000.

FHA buyers made up 8.3% of financed

purchases in May. Maricopa County VA buyers making a similar purchase paid a minimum of $285,000, $395,000 in Peoria, and $425,000 in Glendale. Home purchases made with VA loans were 7% of May’s financed sales. The remaining financed transactions used other financing methods.

For the week ending June 26, 2022, 5% of Maricopa County sellers contributed to their buyer’s closing costs, up from 3% at the end of May. The highest-priced home sale in Maricopa County last month was in Scottsdale for $28,100,000. The highest-priced home sales in Peoria and Glendale were $2,910,000 and $2,100,000, respectively.

Cardinals welcome fans to training camp

he Arizona Cardinals are inviting all fans to their open training camp practices at State Farm Stadium.

The first open practice will be Saturday, July 30, from 1 to 3 p.m. as part of the NFL’s Back Together Saturday initiative.

Fans can reserve free tickets at azcardinals.com/camptix, and individuals can get up to four tickets per practice. Fans will be required to show their digital tickets for entry into the stadium. The ticket zone is located on the east concourse, outside section 135. Call 602-379-0102 or log on to azcardinals.com/tickets for more info.

The team practice on July 30, as well as Saturday, Aug. 6, are scheduled as the annual Red & White Practice.

There will be open seating available on the stadium’s east side in the lower level for fans to watch the players on the field. Additional lower bowl seating will be provided for the two special practice events.

At the Kids Interactive Zone, fans ages 5-12 will have the opportunity to interact with the players and engage in activities. Activities include a quarterback toss, 40-yard dash and mini-field goal kick. All children who wish to participate must be accompanied by an adult or guardian and sign a release.

Children will have the opportunity to get autographs by players after practices along the lower field walls. Big Red and Cardinal cheerleaders will also sign autographs on the south bridge.

Wristbands will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the Children’s Autograph Experience table at the entrance of the Kids Interactive Zone. The Children’s Autograph Experience will not be available on Back Together Saturday or the Red & White Practice.

In addition, fans can snap selfies in front of team-themed backdrops and oversized props at several selfie stations located throughout the stadium.

Stadium concessions will be open for food and beverages, offering classic fare and new items ahead of the 2022 season.

Cardinals merchandise will be available at the Arizona Cardinals Team Shop by Hyundai Gate 2 for purchase.

All concession and team shop sales are cashless.

Parking will be available on the east side of the stadium and will open 60 minutes prior to the scheduled start of practices. Guests are advised to use the green entry off 91st Avenue. For the two special events, Back Together Saturday and the Red & White Practice, additional parking will be available on the west side of the stadium.

Fans will enter State Farm Stadium through Bud Light Gate 3 located on the east side of the stadium or the Arizona Cardinals Team Shop at the north end near Hyundai Gate 2. For practices on July 30 and Aug. 6, fans can enter through BetMGM Gate 1 on the west side of the stadium. Gates will open 30 minutes before the start of practice.

16, the top 10 finalists will qualify to compete in Macayo’s Inaugural Chimi Challenge Championship at Macayo’s Scottsdale location on Monday, Sept.

It’s important to live loved in unloving times

H

ere’s a thought for you. Love is the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.

One of the Scriptures’ most influential and insightful books is the Song of Songs. It is a love story of two real-life characters and their relationship that happened long ago. One was a sun-beaten shepherdess at the bottom of the social spectrum. Her life and choices had beaten her up. She had given up on most anything other than the worst happening to her.

The other character was a king named Solomon. He was at the top end of the social spectrum. He ruled one of the most powerful kingdoms the world has ever seen. As the shepherdess saw him, she was overwhelmed by his persona, but, in her mind, the king would never be overwhelmed by her persona.

Hint: Be careful when talking to yourself, because you’re listening.

What happens next is recorded for eternity for us to get a glimpse into the wonders and essence of God. Solomon sees the shepherdess and is ravished by her. He saw in her what she could never see in herself. Solomon’s attraction wasn’t physical. The years and her background had taken some of that away. Nevertheless, Solomon recognized her value, essence and potential royalty even though she wasn’t a queen. He loved her… “even though.”

That’s what true godly love is.

The Hebrew words in Song of Songs illuminate a type of love that is much more the world’s type of love. The original language reveals words like passion, ravished, fervent, desire, intimate, longing, wonder, splendor, reckless holiness and total abandonment. It

took a “Solomon” who loved her unconditionally to awaken the sun-worn shepherdess to her value, potential and future. His “reckless” faith, hope and love awakened her faith, hope and love. The shepherdess moved from living to be loved to living from being loved. There’s a big difference there.

The king’s unconditional love transformed the shepherdess’ mindset about herself. She thought, “I’m ugly.” He thought, “You’re beautiful.”

She thought, “I have a terrible past.”

He thought, “You have a great future.” She thought, “I’m poor. I have no money.” He said, “You’re wealthy.

I’ll give you ornaments of gold.” She thought, “I’m a lowly shepherdess.”

He thought, “You’re a queen.” She thought, “I’m unclean from sin.” He thought, “You are now whiter than snow.” She thought, “I was condemned and ostracized by my family.”

He thought, “There’s no condemnation in my family.” She thought, “I’m unworthy.” He thought, “You are worthy.” She thought, “My house is a dirty field.” He thought, “Your house is now the king’s chambers.” She thought, “I’m bad.” He thought, “You’re good.”

The four basic human needs for people to prosper in their souls are significance, acceptance, love and security.

Most people live to be significant, not from being significant; to be accepted,

rather than from being accepted; to be loved, rather than from being loved; to be secure, rather than from being secure. That’s where the shepherdess was living before meeting the king.

After the transformational encounter with the king, she moved to living significant, accepted, loved and secure.

And how her soul prospered. Why? She had the correct IP address. So, what does IP mean? It’s living from your God-given identity and purpose, rather than for some human-made fake identity and purpose. When you know your worth, you will stop giving discounts.

Do you see how this real-life example relates to you and me in a way that most everyone can connect with? The king dismounted from his royal horse and met the shepherdess where she was. Then he took her up to where he was. That is what God did for us; God is the king. We are a type of shepherdess.

The Bible says we can love because God first loved us. Just like the shepherdess and King Solomon, we awaken to our actual worth, identity and value by God awakening us to what we mean to God. We don’t deserve it.

We can’t earn it. Our part is to believe it and then receive it, just like the shepherdess did.

Why do we need to know God loves us? Pastor Mike Bickel says: “We will never have more affection or passion for God than we understand that He has for us. Likewise, we will never be

more committed to God than we understand that He is committed to us.”

The relentless act of birthing these things into the innermost soul of a thirsty child makes a woman a mother. The child you hold in your arms is your gift to a future that you will not see.”

King Solomon birthed the maternal side of God into the shepherdess (and us, too). That’s how you live loved in unloving times.

Back to School Imagine Schools strives for students to reach potential

hen Imagine Schools opened its first campus in Arizona in 2002, they had one key goal in mind: for every student to develop their character as much as their comprehension of the curriculum.

Twenty years later, Imagine Schools continues to embrace this core value at its 14 campuses throughout the state, including metropolitan locations in Phoenix, Mesa, and as far west as Buckeye and southeast as Coolidge.

As noted by Frank Stirpe, director of operations and community development, the approximately 8,000 pre-K through 12th graders who attend the nonprofit public charter school are taught much more than the traditional three Rs. “Students learn the ABCs and 123s, but we also focus on the whole child,

so we also teach things like character development so that when they leave school, they will be productive members of our society,” he said.

Everyone who works at Imagine Schools shares these values and is empowered to be part of this learning process, he added.

Clara Thigpen, regional academic director, said in addition to using a standard based curriculum at the 13 brickand-mortar campuses and one online campus, each Imagine Schools campus has autonomy to support individualized student learning through various instructional approaches.

This approach, Thigpen said, means each Imagine Schools campus is unique. However, all Imagine Schools across the country have common shared values.

According to Thigpen, every campus shares several common threads, including a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

“We also teach critical thinking, creative problem solving, and employ technology as learning tools on each campus,” Thigpen said, adding that all students are encouraged to reflect and collaborate as they exchange ideas with their peers.

Because of Imagine Schools’ value-based culture, combined with its positive atmosphere, many families are eager to register all their children in Imagine Schools.

“It’s extraordinary when families have all their siblings attend Imagine Schools because they want that family type of atmosphere. Parents, teachers and students alike remember our positive learning environment,” Thigpen said.

“Educating students with integrity and accountability are what we are all about, and we empower our teachers to make decisions using our shared values.”

Thigpen said she is thrilled to work for an organization that places such a strong emphasis on helping students to succeed academically and in character development.

Verizon to donate backpacks with school supplies

BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF CC and Wireless Zone stores will donate 140,000 backpacks full of school supplies in the 10th School Rocks Backpack Giveaway.

The stores’ owner, Round Room LLC, has provided more than 1.2 million backpacks full of school supplies to children across the United States as they prepare for their school year.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 1,200 stores nationwide will invite families to their locations to pick up a backpack filled with pencils, paper, a pencil box, folders, a ruler and glue. One backpack per child present will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

In addition to the backpack donations,

families can enter their students in a sweepstakes to win a $10,000 college scholarship through the giveaway’s Big Impact. Children in grades K-12 are eligible for entry and can be registered at their local TCC and Wireless Zone stores during the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway event. Five scholarships will be awarded to randomly selected winners.

“For the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway to reach its 10th edition is truly monumental

for all of us at Round Room, TCC and Wireless Zone,” said Scott Moorehead, chief executive officer of Round Room.

That totals $37.1 billion spent in America last year on school supplies alone. BY GLENDALE STAR STAFF he Children’s Museum of Phoenix has partnered with the Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation for its annual Back-to-School Dental Hygiene Program.

Designed to instill in children healthy habits such as good oral hygiene, the program aims to equip participants with the knowledge and tools for improved well-being throughout life.

Running through Sunday, Aug. 14, the program will engage children in a fun, interactive magic show hosted by the beloved Great Flossini and his To-

tally Tooth-Ular Magic Show, during which he educates children about the importance of proper dental hygiene and inspires them to practice these habits on an ongoing basis, including

brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist.

This program will feature four different art studio activites: • Toothsaver Necklaces: Lets kids make a special necklace to save their tooth for the Tooth Fairy.

• Color Me Creative Tooth Pictures: A program where children draw a silly picture of a tooth as they learn about proper dental hygiene.

• Nibble, Bite, Chomp! Animal Teeth Puppets: Introduces children to different types of animal teeth, after which they create their own animal puppet.

• Tuesday Toothdays!: Every Tuesday a special tooth-related activity will be offered to visitors.

The Children’s Museum of Phoenix will also distribute 6,000 Smile Bags to 200 teachers, who will then distribute the bags to their students, thus providing a tangible resource to children and families to promote healthy dental practices in the home each day.

The Smile Bags include a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and an education card.

All programs and activities are free with paid museum admission of $16 per person. Children under the age of 1 are free.

Sponsored by the Glendale Kiwanis Club, the Glendale Elementary School District is hosting a Stuff the Bus with School Supplies event where anyone can donate school supplies to make sure students start off the year right.

School supplies include, but are not limited to, rulers, crayons, markers, erasers, pencils, pens, scissors, high-

lighters, binders, glue sticks, notebook paper, etc.
