Local mosaic artist Jen Jame shares her thoughts through tiles

T

he mosaic art medium is a laborious and expensive one, says artist Jen Jamē. But the feeling she gets knowing her artwork will be a part of someone’s life makes it all worthwhile.

“Art from department stores is just decor.

There really is no story behind it,” Jamē says. “I believe every house, to call it home, needs to hold real art, made by real people with a story worth telling.”

The English-teacher-turned-artist was born and raised in Santa Monica. As a child, Jamē knew she had a creative spirit and established her talent with the help of family and friends.

“I would say I found my artistic voice from a close family friend who was a professional artist,” Jamē says. “She would babysit us a lot, and I remember us always sitting around the dining room table coloring or working on an art project.”

Jamē says her love for mosaics blossomed during a trip to Venice Beach, where selfproclaimed “hippies” were selling handmade mosaic mirrors on the boardwalk.

“I just instantly fell in love,” Jamē says. “I looked at the mirror and thought, ‘Wow, I need to make this.’”

When Jamē was 20 years old, she moved to Arizona and put her artistic dream on the back burner to teach junior high and high school English. It wasn’t until around 2015 that Jamē committed to art full time and began to take her talent on as a business.

“What sort of reignited my passion was a gorgeous fireplace I had seen while house hunting that was completely made up of mosaics,” Jamē says. “That’s when I was like, ‘OK, enough is enough. It’s time to

For Jamē, the ideas for pieces that come to her are heavily influenced by her personality and life experiences.

“My family and I frequently travel to Hawaii. So, for a while, I was really into making waves and oceans,” Jamē says. “Before that, the focus was big, whimsical, wispy flames to hang over fireplaces.”

The artist is dabbling with pieces inspired by rock musicians. Jamē has already created mosaic portraits of legendary artists such as Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Cash. Jamē says everything from the type of glass that is used to the material of the base is crucial in telling the piece’s story.

“Even the music I listen to while I am creating matters,” Jamē says. “For instance, whichever rock icon I am making at the time, I listen to the music associated with them. It helps me channel them into my piece.”

Jamē begins her projects by sketching the desired image onto a base for the mosaic. The artist says wood is a favorite material to use and can be left raw, stained or even torched,

The drawn lines on the base act as a guide for strategically puzzling together fragmented pieces of glass, tile or other materials. Grout is spread on top and between the cracks of the glass to seal the pieces once it is dried.

“Whenever I start a piece, I legitimately believe that every single one is going to be terrible and I am going to have to toss it,” Jamē says with a laugh. “But then I always step back after being up close with it and praying that it is going to turn out alright, and I am taken aback. Like I cannot believe what is in front of me.”

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect the lives of many, including Jamē. Right before the state began its shelter-in-place order, she released inclusive DIY mosaic coaster kits on her website. The kits have been extremely successful and have garnered rave reviews online.

“A family who has members across the country and in the U.K. bought nine kits, and they are all doing their mosaic drink coasters together on a Zoom call,” Jamē says with

a laugh. “So, although it wasn’t at all intentional to be selling these during a pandemic, it is amazing to see art bringing everyone together.”

The artist also had plans to host monthly art lessons from her studio and provide mosaic lessons to children and young adults in foster care homes and facilities.

“Once a teacher, always a teacher,” Jamē says. “Children really are the best colleagues, and I hope to be able to bond and mentor these kids by giving them a creative outlet.”

When asked what she would say to those who are new to the art community, Jamē’s advice is simple: Just start and play.

“Don’t wait to have all the answers. Ask questions, but don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Those hiccups could lead you to something you are proud of.”

Your Community Schools DVUSD reflects the area’s successes

T

he last school year was interesting to say the least! This next school year will be just as exciting. The No. 1 lesson we learned in our last societal adventure was public schools are the bedrock of our democracy. It is how families get nutritional, emotional, social and academic support and connect to a community.

Most American school districts have educational systems that have been in place for decades, some over a century. Charter and private schools come and go when the money dries up, but the local public school remains to serve anyone who comes in the doors regardless of race, religion, special needs or household income.

The Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) started in a small building in New River in 1934 and has expanded to 39 schools and 34,000 students, passing the demographer’s predictions for growth the past three years. Our students and staff have won hundreds of prestigious and unique awards, like Forbes.com’s Top 50 AZ Businesses to work; state, athletic and music titles; and KTAR’s Best Public School District in Arizona, right behind Chandler last year. We fully expect to take away their crown after passing Chandler in academics this past year on the state tests and several of KTAR’s other measures

New School Old school techniques will change this fall

A

s a student, it seems like all 12 to 13 years of our schooling are laid out for you. You know exactly what to expect day in and day out as the same structure repeats. Nobody would have been able to anticipate the home learning of fourth quarter of the 2019-20 school year. It makes us wonder what next year will look like.

With the global pandemic, things are sure to change, especially with many schools being at or beyond capacity in 85085.

The big question seems to be, “Will we be going back to in person classes in the fall?”

The answer to this is unclear. As of press time, Gov. Doug Ducey’s stay-at-home order was lifted, but masks are required in Maricopa County.

CDC recommendations have been made regarding the return to classrooms. Some of

these include higher sanitation measures, face coverings, and spacing out desks at least 6 feet apart to limit the amount of exposure students have to one another. With cases still on the rise, students are wondering if this will be enough to make them feel safe at school.

The district has been discussing year-round schooling, block scheduling, hybrid courses, or just not going back altogether and continuing with online learning. This would, of course, change the structure of what school looks like to students statewide. What did this global pandemic change about the way things are taught to students?

Shelby Smith, an upcoming senior at Sandra Day O’ Connor High School, shares his perspective on the matter.

“Most students will testify to feeling overwhelmed long before the lockdown was in place. The only thing that the lockdown has changed is how it is being taught,” Smith says.

Having to switch to online schooling made teachers prioritize the most important information and, in turn, change up how they had

taught the material in previous years.

“The (current) structure of the course is mentally taxing on the student. Future schooling may favor the students’ mental well-being more than their grade status. I believe there will also be a change in priority, where the staff will be forced to focus on the more important subjects and won’t be pressured into making the students do a vast amount of assignments. It could also change the grading system and how participation and understanding will be worth more than correct answers,” Smith says.

With how much our world is changing daily, there is no real way to predict what DVUSD will look like in early August.

The best thing to do is stay informed (the DVUSD website is updated weekly), continue to take preventative measures to stay safe, and go into the upcoming school year with an open mind and willingness to conform to change.

Tips on making the backyard livable

T

he longest walk you’ll ever take is the walk across your backyard in the Summer without flip flops. Your patio or pool deck reaches heat levels that would make your car dashboard jealous. That’s life in Phoenix, for sure! Many Arizona backyards include hardscape such as bricks, pavers, concrete, stone or tile. Any of these hardscape materials can look amazing while providing you with a highly durable surface.

But they all share the same drawback: They get hot!

As Phoenicians, we understand this is part and parcel with summer in the Valley. But standing on your patio shouldn’t feel like walking across hot coals at a motivational corporate retreat. Thanks to scientific advancements, coupled with the relentless pursuit of staying cool, we now have more options than ever before for making backyard spaces a little more livable. Th is is welcome news for people who love spending the summer barefoot—or for anyone with kids or dogs in their backyard. Happy Independence Day Be proud of the country on July 4 and every day

f your only frame of reference for how you view our country was the last two months of cable news coverage, you would likely conclude that the United States of America is a horrible place to live. If you turn off your television, ignore the negativity on social media, look out your window and actually talk to people, you would likely reach an opposite conclusion.

Everyone has to acknowledge that our nation has a history that includes sanctioned racism; but no local, state or federal agency (or private business) seeks to oppress any minority group. All have diversity programs with stated goals of doing the opposite. Yet somehow there are still racists. There are even white supremacists. Neither prevent our country from remaining a land that is full of

What is natural law?

Natural law refers to a belief that legal and moral principles come not from governments but instead from ethical standards that are often divinely inspired as to what is right and as to what is wrong. Perhaps the best statement of natural law is contained within the most familiar passages of our Declaration of Independence.

“When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature’s god entitle them. … We hold these truths to be self-evident,

Facts are frequently stubborn things. Nevertheless, some people have an incentive to hype tragic events into a narrative. When investigations conclude otherwise, what actually happened becomes irrelevant. For example, all of the investigations concluded that there was not a factual basis to fi le either criminal charges or even civil rights charges for events in Ferguson, Missouri. But those conclusions based on forensic evidence do not seem to matter. Perception has become reality.

Leaders of state and local governments, the faith community, and anyone who wants to participate need to come together and instead of trying to fit cases into a “this is yet another (fill in the blank),” focus instead on why specific cases happened at all.

We must be willing to have uncomfortable discussions.

So why are members of minority groups

that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

This was and remains a fairly radical statement. It means there are certain undisputed truths. These include a truth that everyone is created equal and has certain rights that no government can take away. Instead, governments exist to support those rights. Just as important, our government only has authority in areas where people have given it that authority.

I know that the answer is likely more complicated than the constant claims of omnipotent racism. I know that the fear and frustration of minority communities cannot be ignored. Such positions have value. And I know that we need to have honest and objective data-driven conversations that seek solutions rather than confirmation of a predetermined conclusion.

So how do we move forward? By valuing individual responsibility and by returning to the path provided in our founding documents. Our constitutional protections are protections of structure, notably the restraints imposed by federalism and by separation of powers. Additional personal freedoms that the government cannot take away are listed in the provisions of the Bill of Rights and in the Civil War amendments.

These concepts are what make the United States of America exceptional. We are not exceptional because we have better food, people or weather than other countries. Because citizens cannot be identified by race or by national origin, Americans have always had to rely on ideas and ideals to hold ourselves together and to think of ourselves as a single people. In short, we are exceptional because our country was founded on a set of exceptional ideas. That’s something worth celebrating. Happy Fourth of July!

he coronavirus pandemic has temporarily put a pause on many of the things we enjoy—including social outings and travel. Now is the perfect time to reflect on the past with loved ones and make plans for future trips. We’ve put together a list of 43 getaway favorites located in Arizona and across state lines to inspire your quarantine daydreams.

The Grand Canyon We had to start with a trip to the landmark that makes us Arizona. Take a walk on the canyon’s Skywalk, a glass bridge with heart-stopping aerial views of the site. Go on a whitewater rafting tour with Hualapai River Runners or even take a helicopter and boat tour of the area. Additional recreational activities include zip lining over cliffs and exploring local history at the Native American Village and Guano Point.

One of the seven wonders of the world, the Grand Canyon is a special experience that holds a few surprises despite being one of the most visited attractions in the country.

Snowbowl

Sedona Sedona is known as one of the most beautiful spots on Earth, and when you go check it out for yourself you’ll see why. It’s a treasured spot that is perfect for hiking, biking, kayaking and, more notably, it’s the city’s signature red rocks alone that makes visiting the serene resort town a great getaway. Whether it is a girls trip or a family vacation, Sedona offers visitors a worldclass experience.

Flagstaff Flagstaff has it all. Arts and culture, incredible food, outdoor adventure, and access to some of the most famous sites in

the United States. Popular attractions include the iconic Route 66, the world’s largest ponderosa forest, and monthly town festivals. The mountain town is a prime location for outdoor recreations and is a welcoming spot for those wanting to escape the Valley heat.

Salt River Lake Plan a getaway surrounded by nature at the Tonto National Forest. While most opt to tube down the water, you can also go kayaking and horseback riding at the Salt River Lake. The area is native to Salt River wild horses, and you might even be able to spot them right from your tube. Other wildlife that is known to emerge includes deer, bald eagles and river otters.

Tombstone Travel back in time to the golden age of the Wild West, when Tombstone was known for gambling, booze and the infamous gunfight at O.K. Corral. The town features landmarks including Boothill Cemetery, the Courthouse and, notably, the haunted Birdcage Theater.

Storefronts that line the dirt streets sell things like lassos, cowboy boots and toy guns. Visitors can pan for silver, see the town’s mining exhibit and take nightly ghost tours around the city.

landscape. Horseshoe Bend is a horseshoeshaped valley that includes part of the Colorado River. With an overlook of the dramatic 1,000-foot drop, the view is sure to take your breath away.

Stroll through Antelope Canyon. It is well known for the light beams that shine through gaps in the canyon and reflect onto the rock walls and sandy ground. The light beams can only be seen during certain hours, typically around noon in the summer months.

Kayaking through Lake Powell is a must-do when you find yourself in the city. Being the second-largest manmade lake in the United States, Lake Powell offers paddling to guests’ content. So, you can spend the day paddling to your heart’s content.

Lake Havasu Arizona’s water playground is located just three hours from Phoenix, and some argue that it beats some well-known beaches in SoCal. Visitors can rent ATVs to roam around the desert and reserve a scenic boat tour. Be sure to hit up some of the local restaurants and bars to experience the city’s nightlife. If you have time, learn more about the fascinating history of the famous London Bridge that ended up in this oasis.

Jerome “The Billion Dollar Copper Camp” was once known as the richest city in the United States. When the Great Depression hit and sent prices of precious metals and stones to rock bottom, the town was left abandoned.

Today, Jerome is one of the largest and “wickedest” ghost towns in the country. Among the saloons and brothels, visitors have said to experience ghost sighting and hauntings.

Snowbowl In the winter, Snowbowl is home to one of the state’s most-popular ski resorts with the longest season. The area receives about 260 inches of snowfall a year and gets a little help with a state-of-the-art snowmaking machine.

In the summer, visitors can still have some fun in the San Francisco Peaks. Outdoor activities like summer tubing, hiking, disc golf and a bungee trampoline.

Brett Stewart builds guitars for charity and friends

B

rett Stewart has played guitar for 30 years. He hadn’t considered exploring the way they work until the pandemic hit and his events company was put on hold.

The Anthem resident, who runs Adventure Fitness, has since built guitars for charities and celebrities.

“I stumbled upon a guitar that was really, really cheap,” he says. “It needed a lot of work and I only had $50 invested in it, so why not rip it apart. I started cutting it up and replacing ‘this’ and swapping ‘that.’ The funny part was, I knew enough about guitars to make them look good, sound good and play good.”

Recently, he created a Michigan-themed guitar for police officer Sean Reavie, who lives in 85085.

“I try to give a little piece of that person and their background,” he says, “I put a lot of Michigan into it.

Ironically, my first three guitars were all about Michigan.”

Reavie’s guitar boasts a 1967 Michigan license plate, representing the year he was born. Stewart bought a seat from the now-partially demolished Pontiac Silverdome and used the No. 12 tab from it to celebrate the day Reavie was born.

“When you flip the guitar over, you can see the bottom of it,” Reavie says. “It rests perfectly in the center of the Old English D, which is the most prominent

part of the guitar. Then there’s a 50-year-old Detroit Pistons magnet. The personalization is one of a kind.

There’s not a guitar like this anywhere in the world, and it’s mine.”

Reavie calls Stewart a “master craftsman.”

“He adapts and overcomes,” he adds. “We collaborate on my 5Ks. He’s the organizer. He created the mud runs. I’ve learned earlier this year that with COVID, he had to cancel everything. He does these races around the country and lost all of his events.

“Being the forward-thinking, creative man he is, he started building guitars. He’s a true talent. I love his attention to detail.”

The partnership between Reavie and Stewart is perfect. Reavie heads up Put on the Cape: A Foundation for Hope, which helps abused children.

Every other week, Stewart creates a guitar to auction for charity, including Put on the Cape. He’s also worked with Don’t Be a Chump! Check for a Lump! and Boulder Creek High School. The school’s guitar raised $750 for its graduation/prom that was scheduled for June 27.

“Every build that I’m doing is crazier than the one before it,” Stewart says with a laugh. “Right now, I’m chopping up Stratocasters in red, white and blue and putting them together. They start at $500.”

Comedian John Heffron is a good

friend of Stewart. The one-time radio host doesn’t play guitar but was impressed by his friend’s handiwork.

“I have a 1970 motorcycle license plate on it for the year he was born,” Stewart says. “I did some other interesting things. He went to Eastern Michigan University, and I sprayed a really subtle logo on to it that says ‘E93,’ the year he graduated from EMU. “I try to throw in little pieces of the person we’re building it for. Sean saw what I did with it and really wanted the Pure Michigan guitar.

It’s all Detroit all the time.”

Unlike Heffron, Reavie plays the guitar, specifically in the blues genre. In the 1970s, his mom brought home an album that featured this “insane, layered sound with booming guitars.”

“It lifted me out of my seat,” he says. “It was ‘Born to Run’ (by Bruce Springsteen). We were used to disco, ABBA and the Carpenters.

Then you hear ‘Born to Run.’ “My neighbor played guitar, and I wanted to learn how to play guitar and the three basic chords. Then the first undeniable truth about music hit me—this is really hard. I tossed the guitar in my closet until the ’80s came and I heard ‘Back in Black’ by AC/DC. Angus Young had that sinister, snarling guitar.”

His father insisted Reavie turn off AC/DC. The youngster’s response?

“I imagine grandpa said to turn off Elvis,” he recalls. “My dad said, ‘You just validated you’re my kid,’ and turned it back on. He’s my role model and hero. He couldn’t argue with that.”

In college, he learned he couldn’t read music and couldn’t concentrate. In 2006, his life changed dramatically. The bottom fell out of the Michigan economy. Reavie lost his business, he moved back in with his parents and decided to later move to Phoenix.

“Thirteen years later, I still have that Les Paul,” he says. “This year, I was seriously injured in the line of duty. I was off work for three months. I took lessons from a YouTube instructor. It’s so nice to play, especially now with COVID and everything that’s happening. With my profession, there’s a lot of angst and stress. That goes away with the guitar when I plug it in.”

Local Honors Two customers win big at Spencer’s

wo local Spencer’s TV & Appliance customers were awarded major shopping sprees at its original location in Mesa recently.

Patti Everts of Scottsdale and Richard Holmes of Peoria each won $10,000 to spend at the store for being its 4 millionth transaction.

John Polainer, the Scottsdale location’s general manager, gave them certificates.

He also served as the salesperson who sold Everts her appliances at the Scottsdale store.

Everts’ prize-winning trip was her first visit to Spencer’s.

“I bought a whole new kitchen,” Everts says gleefully. “I bought everything that a kitchen should be—a washer and dryer, refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher, the whole kitchen.”

Everts says she never won anything like this. At first, she thought she thought the phone call from Spencer’s was a trick.

“I received a phone call in the afternoon, and I thought I was punked; I really did,” Everts says matter-of-factly. “I didn’t know the person calling me. I didn’t recognize the number on my cellphone. I was trying to be excited for him, but I didn’t want to be super excited and be wrong.

“Then John (Polainer), my salesperson, calls me about an hour later and congratulated me, and then I knew it was real.”

Everts is not sure how she will spend her $10,000, but she’s excited to return to Spencer’s when she is ready.

Holmes is a long-time customer of Spencer’s and was also surprised that he had won.

“One of the managers let me know,” Holmes says. “I was surprised, and right after that the salesman called me.”

To enter into the competition, Holmes bought a new stove and refrigerator. He bought all of his appliances at Spencer’s in the last 15 years.

Holmes had also never won something of the magnitude of this prize.

ally good and every experience since has been great, so I just keep coming back,” Holmes says.

He already used most of the gift on more appliances and will finish using the winnings and continue to be “a Spencer’s customer forever.”

“We got another new stove and another new refrigerator and a deep freezer and a TV. Now we’re just waiting to get some more stuff,” Holmes says.

After buying a new stove, Holmes sold his other one but now has three refrigerators and a freezer in his house.

Spencer’s has 10 Valleywide locations that are practicing social distancing during the pandemic and offers virtual listings of its appliances on its website.

Polainer was happy to award the winners and is hopeful that by next year the company will have reached the 5 millionth transaction mark.

Custom Hauling business keeps homes and the desert clutter free

A

nthem-based North Valley Custom Hauling is about more than taking bulk items from customers’ homes.

Dustin Holm and his staff are looking out for the beauty of the North Valley and its environment.

“The illegal dumping problem is out of control,” the Sacramento-born Holm says.

“It’s kind of sad, but my crew and I team up with local businesses to coordinate community events. We clean up the desert at our own expense. One of the biggest cleanups we had was in March. We hauled away four to five 12-foot to 14-foot trailers filled with junk and debris from the North Valley desert. The next weekend, someone went to the same spot and threw a load of drywall. I picked it up again.”

Holm calls it a great way to network with the community, but the task comes with its own set of risks.

“Twice we were pulled over by the police,

who thought we were dumping when we were actually cleaning the desert,” Holm says.

“We document every cleanup with videos and photos. One time, we picked up a hot tub from Cave Creek Boulevard and the police thought it was the craziest thing to pick up a hot tub in the desert. I was pulled over by a sheriff for a sofa I had in the trailer, but he could see it was full of cactus. He knew we weren’t dumping.”

All of that aside, Holm says he doesn’t own

the most glamorous company, but it’s certainly necessary.

“I really enjoy getting outside and meeting new people,” Holm says. “I consider my customers my employers. Word of mouth can make or break a business. When they’re satisfied, they spread the good word.”

The 3-year-old North Valley Custom Hauling serves 85086, 85085, North Scottsdale and all along the Carefree corridor. Holm goes Valleywide, but he has traveled as far as Flagstaff, Mesa and Buckeye. His company consists of him; his wife, Elizabeth; daughter Kailey, who’s studying pre-med at Grand Canyon University; Colten Winter, who attends Glendale Community College; and Kyle Harris, who plays basketball for Phoenix College. Elizabeth, Harris and Winter are Boulder Mountain High School graduates.

Holm says he primarily works with real estate agents, who must clean out homes before they’re moved into; local businesses; and those who are moving.

move trash or chemicals. His definition of “trash” is anything one would throw in a trash can.

“We move large items like furniture, hot tubs, sectionals and refrigerators,” he says.

“We’re on-demand, bulk pickup. If someone’s moving and they have a pile of what they don’t need to take, we’ll take it.”

Owning North Valley Custom Hauling is appropriate for Holm. In his early 20s, he was in the furniture business. His resume also includes stints in construction, commercial truck driving and home loans. They all provided Holm with experience to accomplish his tasks.

“The furniture business correlated to moving furniture out of people’s homes,” he says.

“We have to be safe with houses. I’ve been in construction. That knowledge helps with tearing down sheds, small garden walls or fountains.

Have fun when talking about the country’s history

H

appy birthday, America! At 244 years old, do you think she is showing her age? When you look around the world and study lifestyles and living conditions of much of the world’s population, it becomes crystal clear what a blessing it is to live in America. Like anything run by man, our nation is not perfect; it has flaws. But as we spend this month celebrating America’s birthday, how do we teach our kids about the good and about their future responsibilities? Even the youngest of kids understand the concept of having a birthday.

I know, using the “H” word (history), can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. It can be a lot of fun. For example, do your kids know the world’s tallest roller coaster, with its 418-foot drop, is Kingda Ka, located at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey? Do they know the exact middle of the country is Castle Rock, South Dakota? Get a map; check it out. Do they know that for a long time the only state that grew coffee was Hawaii? (Now, California and Georgia are also trying.)

However, Mount Waialeale in Hawaii still lays claim to be the wettest place on the whole earth, with more than 373 inches of rain a year.

Do your kids know the first United States capital was in New York City, then it was moved to Philadelphia before it arrived at its present location in Washington, D.C.? Let me challenge you to take history a little deeper. Take it to the personal level. There are so many storylines that reveal the sacrifices and agony men and women faced so we can have the nation we have today.

A theatric musical called “1776” dramatizes the efforts of John Adams as he tried to persuade his colleagues to sign the Declaration of Independence and vote for American independence. In fact, YouTube provides a full production of 1776. Again, this was an award-winning musical written

by Sherman Edwards and based on a book

by Peter Stone. Musicals are fun to watch.

What a way to learn about Congress and the Declaration of Independence. It has a lot of humor in it as well.

YouTube also provides an hour-and-ahalf made-for-TV movie called “The Crossing.” It’s about Christmas in 1776 and the

miracle at Trenton. If you watch this musical or this movie, have some fun and spend time afterward learning the popular music from that era, or if you really want to go all out, look at the wardrobe and try recreating some of those outfits!

Take some time and look at the architecture and how people lived. What did school look like? The one-room schoolhouse is a lesson of its own. Look at the way clothes had to be made and washed; understand why we still have sayings such as “the whole 9 yards.” Look at how food had to be bought (grocery stores did not open until 1919). Try cooking meals the way Americans did in 1776. Our modern technology takes for granted how chores are done, and technology may even remove some of the understanding that families had to work together and help each other.

Neighbor was for neighbor; friends were like family.

If you want to take it to the next level, become a detective and research together why the bald eagle, the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty are important symbols to our nation.

Calming Crafts These projects are the perfect ways to relax

ith all the stress from the last few months, I have been asked a lot about stress-reduction techniques to help with anxiety and worrying thoughts.

Here are ideas for stress-busting crafts.

The use of our five senses can reset our thinking when anxiety creeps up. You can start with tracing your hand on paper and cutting it out. On each finger, write a different sense.

What do you see, what do you feel, what do you hear, what do you smell and what do you taste?

This grounding technique can bring us back to the now and help us calm our thoughts of things we cannot control. It may take a few times or some practice, but it can help change our negative thoughts and bring us to a less stressed state of mind.

Deep breathing can also calm a nervous system and painting while breathing can be even more calming. Start with paper, paint and a paint brush. You can use the brush to create a figure eight shape. As you paint, take a deep breath in, hold for 4 seconds, and breathe out. Once the paint dries, you can also trace with your fi nger and do the same breathing patterns. This helps train us to take slow, controlled, mindful breaths to help combat stress.

Play-Doh is another great stress reducer.

Start with one cup of flour. We used glutenfree, all-purpose flour because that’s what we had on hand. Next, add 1/4 cup of salt; 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar; and optional spices such as 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon of ginger, 1 teaspoon of nutmeg and 1 teaspoon of cloves if you want it to smell good.

You can use any scent you want if spices are not a smell you like. Mix dry ingredients and then add the wet ingredients. You will use 1 cup of water and 2 tablespoons of oil. Stir the ingredients together until it is like cake batter

and cook slowly in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly and heat until thickened.

It should form one large clump. Allow the dough to cool and knead until smooth. The dough be can used to squeeze and roll out to relieve stress. Store in an airtight bag or container to enjoy repeatedly.

I hope this month brings a time of less stress and time for more calming crafts.

Extraordinary Rides Mercedes-Benz GLE is a fantastic driving experience

he GLE series is an upper-level SUV that has generated plenty of sales at Mercedes dealers.

For the base fee of $54,000, buyers get a 2.0-liter engine making 255 horsepower.

Moving up to the 4.0-liter, 483 horsepower V-8 can set you back $77,000. But for those where money is no object, this soon-to-arrive 2021 GLE 63S AMG version is worth the wait.

Under the hood is a handmade, 4.0-liter, biturbo V-8 motor cranking a whopping

603 horsepower and massive 627 lbs./feet of torque, hooked to a slick nine-speed automatic transmission.

To assure the massive performance tires mounted on huge 22-inch wheels stick to the pavement, power is routed through an AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system. Air suspension provides extra stability and comfort.

The end result is a performance SUV that can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and has a computer-limited top speed of 174 mph.

tempting the latter didn’t seem like a good idea on Arizona highways.

The AMG is very pleasant to drive, thanks to eight computer mode choices—comfort, sport, sport+, race, individual, and slippery for wet roads or snow. For going off-road, there are also sand or trail modes.

Air suspension allows the vehicle to be raised for clearing desert rocks in the path.

Passing power with this V8 is certainly not a problem. The GLE AMG comes very close to being a “does-everything” vehicle.

The Mercedes has not been rated for fuel economy by the EPA yet, but the computer showed an average of 17 mpg in 2,000 miles of use. We took a 125-mile highway trip and observed 19 mpg. Most buyers who purchase a potent engine like this may not care about fuel consumption, but these are very good numbers for such a powerful machine.

Many potential buyers might care about the cost of this beast, if not fuel economy, and it is not cheap. The starting fee is $114,000. But wait, there’s more! With 17 option packages too long to list here, the damage comes to a tidy $133,600. Let’s not forget to add various taxes and tags. But, while limited production German rides command heft y fees, they also provide a fantastic driving experience. And this AMG certainly does.

Summertime Steak Salad with Dijon Dressing

I

f you love main dish salads for the summertime, this is one to try! The tasty fi xins’ like chopped crispy bacon, hard boiled eggs and candied pecans all add to this hearty plateful of goodness, but I think it’s the dressing that really makes the meal.

The sweet and tangy mixture in this dressing is a family favorite and one that we’ve used on spinach salads for years.

I’ve changed things up a bit for this bountiful meal. I’ve added spring mix to the spinach greens, and I’ve accompanied the greens with a beautifully pan-grilled flat iron steak, cooked medium rare and sliced into strips. If you prefer grilled chicken on the side, it will be just as delicious.

There is one important tip in tossing this salad. Add the dressing at the very last minute, right before you’re ready to serve it up. Also, instead of pouring the dressing directly over the greens, spoon the dressing along the inside of the bowl and let the dressing ooze down the sides.

Then, give it a gentle toss. This is to keep the greens from getting soggy. If you decide that you don’t want to make this

salad a main dish, it makes a savory side salad for just about any entrée. Make up a double or even triple batch of this liquid

gold dressing, refrigerate, and then you’ll have it on hand for the next couple of few weeks.

Steak Salad Ingredients for the salad:

- 1 to 1 1/2 bags fresh spinach and/or spring mix (about 12 oz.) washed and dried - 1/2 pound crispy bacon, rough chopped (four to six pieces) - 2 large eggs, hardboiled and chopped - 1 cup candied pecans - 1 teaspoon salt (or more as needed) - 1 teaspoon coarse ground pepper - Steak of your choice, cooked and cut into strips

Ingredients for the salad dressing: - 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil (important to use a good extra virgin olive oil) - 2 heaping tablespoons brown sugar - 1/2 large lemon, juiced - 1 heaping tablespoon Dijon mustard - 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce - 1 large clove fresh garlic, minced

Directions:

Prepare salad dressing. In a medium bowl, whisk together olive oil, brown sugar, lemon juice, mustard,

Worcestershire sauce and garlic until well blended and thickened. Set aside. In a large bowl, add spinach and/or spring mix, crisp chopped bacon, chopped eggs, candied pecans, salt and pepper. Reserve some eggs, bacon and pecans for garnish.

Drizzle dressing around the side of the bowl (so leaves don’t get soggy) then gently mix. Serve on chilled salad plates and top with bacon, eggs and pecans for garnish.

Lay slices of steak over the salad and serve immediately.

The American Dream

Hot Bagels and Deli is the culmination of hard work and good luck

W

hen Bardha Toska lived in Albania, she lacked the nutrition she needed as well as shoes. Her life changed, however, when she won the citizenship lottery and moved to the United States for a better life.

“This is the greatest country in the world,” says Toska, with a wide smile.

She moved to Arizona to join her brother, who owns two Hot Bagels and Deli stores in Glendale. Toska fell in love with the business and opened her own location in Phoenix.

Everything at Hot Bagels and Deli is fresh.

The staff—which includes her two children— makes bagels by hand, not by machine. The bagels are crusty on the outside and chewy on the inside—the way real bagels are meant to taste.

They’re hand rolled, boiled and baked daily.

The flavors include super cinnamon, sesame (Toska’s favorite), chocolate chip and egg.

Breakfast and lunch yields 3,000 bagels every day. The shop also has a full deli, selling Boar’s Head meats, cheeses and homemade spreads—low fat, strawberry, blueberry, walnut raisin, chive, garlic, veggie, olive and pimento, jalapeno, sun-dried tomato and lox.

Breakfast burritos, some of which are filled with chorizo, are just as popular as bagels.

Cold and hot sandwiches as well as buildyour-own wraps are plentiful for lunch.

Cookies, croissants, crumb cake, brownies, danishes and cinnamon rolls round out the offerings.

Cream cheese, Boar’s Head meat, cheese and salad are available by the pound.

During the pandemic, Hot Bagels and Deli switched to takeout. Toska admits the restaurant has its challenges, but it’s well worth it.

“Everything has to be a certain way,” the Glendale resident says. “The bagels are hand rolled, made from scratch. The chicken salad is made from scratch the old-fashioned way.

We boil the chicken breast and make the salad. We don’t use anything from cans. That’s why they’re so good.”

Opening a restaurant is a relatively new idea for Toska. She admits it wasn’t on her wish list while she was under the grips of Communism in Albania.

“You just want to wait for a better life,” she says. “You don’t make those kinds of plans.

The hardest part was not having enough food on the table and not having shoes.

“I think people who come from Europe open restaurants or go into construction because you don’t really need any—how do you say—Ph.D.s and all that stuff. I wanted to be a nurse, but I had a kid to take care of.”

Osteria Mia ‘Simple’ doesn’t define Norterra’s new Italian restaurant

M

ario Rana has high hopes about his new modern Italian restaurant/ wine bar, Osteria Mia, in Norterra.

But first, he and his wife, Kayla, had to survive the turbulent early 2020.

“I didn’t expect it to open during a pandemic,” says the classically trained chef, who specializes in Italian food. “I had to call a lot of audibles and pretty much change everything. I had to change the game plan to survive during this.”

The menu was one of the notable changes.

Osteria Mia opened during a time when restaurants could only offer takeout. Rana had to offer dishes that would stand up when it arrives to a guest’s home.

“There are raviolis and pastas that, if people eat them 15, 20 minutes after they get them, they’re going to be soggy,” Rana says. “We had to change to make (heartier) items that will be good for takeout.

“Now that we’re open, we’re slowly starting to incorporate things.”

The Ranas are focusing on new-school handmade pastas and wood-fired pizzas— with a slight Arizona flair to it.

“You will see Southwestern flavors in our food,” Rana says. “We’re doing a lot of the

classics, like the bucatini, and just a lot of Italian regional items. We’re doing stuff all the way from Northern Italy down to Sicily. So, we’re not just focusing on one area. We have influences from other regions.”

Osteria Mia will serve small plates as well as a build-yourown charcuterie and bruschetta board, and a rotating menu of hand-made pasta and select dried pasta.

Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are on the docket. It offers daily entrée specials such as whole roasted fish, duroc pork chops, wood-fired whole chicken and wine-braised short ribs.

He calls his signature dish his pizzas, which range from $14-$17.

“I think we have some of the best pizzas in America,” Rana says. “I mean, that’s a bold statement because there’s some great pizza out here. I think ours is up there.

“We make the mozzarella fresh in house.

We use high-quality tomatoes and our family’s pizza dough recipe. We actually use beer in our pizza dough because Arizona’s water is gross and the beer is super filtered.”

Rana also enjoys the orecchiette—earshaped semolina pasta in a garlic parmigiano sauce with broccolini, Italian sausage, chilis and oven-roasted tomatoes ($16).

“That’s definitely my favorite dish,” says Rana, who simply enjoys grilling pork chops and steaks at home.

Other pastas on the menu include lupara, red wineinfused rigatoni pasta; squid ink bucatini; creste di gallo; tortellini; and gnocci alla Norma, which ra nge from $14-$23.

Rana is just doing what he loves. His family, who immigrated from Southern Italy in the 1950s, has opened Italian restaurants and pizzerias in

New York City since then. His grandparents moved to Arizona in the 1980s to open Phoenix-based Angelo’s Italian Ice and Gelato.

They have dined at Osteria Mia, a visit that wasn’t exactly comfortable.

“I was pretty nervous for my grandfather to eat here,” says Rana, whose family owns State 48 Brewery. “He is a little discerning and picky, but actually he loved everything. My parents critiqued the food and I worked on them. It helped me improve the menu.”

Meeting of the minds

Rana says his cooking career was an accident. He moved to the Valley from New York City just before he entered Desert Mountain High School. After graduating, he tried to go to Scottsdale Community College, with the hopes of transferring to ASU, and get out of family business, but it didn’t work.

“I did it to pay for college,” he says. “I did it more and more and then I started getting better at it. Once I started actually holding my own, it was OK. I really like doing this. I have a passion for it. I’m the type of person who, whatever I do, I’m going to try to be the best at it.”

“I kept on asking her to hang out and she was ignoring me,” he says with a smile. “I ended up hanging out with her and then we ended up getting married a couple of years later.

“She has just as much experience as I have.

She started working in restaurants when she was 15 also.”

Kayla, who brings front-of-house experi-

ence, took a break from working when she gave birth to their daughter, Mia, after whom the eatery is named. (“Osteria” means an Italian restaurant, typically a simple or inexpensive one.) Rana admits it was hard to keep his passion for the restaurant business during the pandemic.

“There were times I just wanted to give up and say, ‘Screw it,’” says Rana, who doesn’t require his staff to wear masks. “But I decided to just pivot and do what I can to survive. It was almost a blessing in disguise because we got to start off slower. It was one giant soft opening for the most part. It was a good way to work out the kinks.”

The pandemic seems to have softened the moods of the public, too. Rana noticed guests were more lenient and forgiving if an item was running late.

“There’s no way to be normal again,” he says. “But when people do start going out a lot more, we’ll be ready.

“However, there are still the Karens out there who can get mad over everything.

There’s nothing you can do about those people, though.”

The right atmosphere

Rana says his spot in Norterra, near the Harkins Theater, was a good choice.

“It’s a great demographic just for what we’re trying to do,” he says. “As far as the wine, we went for a more casual atmosphere. This area is surrounded by chain restaurants and sports bars. What we’re doing is a slightly elevated cuisine and a higher-end atmosphere. We like to open restaurants in areas where there’s not a lot of competition.

“You want to be around restaurants or a destination spot. Plus, somebody might be going to Pita Jungle and then see our sign, look at the menu and say, ‘Oh, next time, I want to check out that place.’ We chose this

area because we’re right next to the movie theater. This whole corridor is going to have four restaurants—State 48, Pita Jungle, Buffalo Wild Wings and us.”

Rana hopes in the fall society will return to its new normal, with people walking around, heading to the movies and to his neighbors’ restaurants.

More than entrées

Osteria Mia also features fresh pasta with which to take home and create dishes.

“The dry pasta, we make it with the pasta extruder and then we dry them and bag them so people can take them home to cook,” Rana says. “We teach people how to cook them at home. A lot of people have been buying the pastas, taking pictures of what they made and tagging us on social media.”

Even though the pasta is dried, he says it’s super fresh.

“I like bringing people joy,” he says about what Osteria Mia offers. “I’m not a narcissist. I just like the fact that they enjoyed something I created. It’s my art form. It’s my art on a plate and people enjoy it.

“Plus, I like creating a fun atmosphere.

Some of my best friends I’ve met at restaurants. I met my wife at a restaurant. I enjoy being at restaurants. It’s something I like to do. I don’t know what else I would do. I wake up every morning and I’m excited to go to work, to try new specials and new ways to do things.”

Osteria Mia’s bar boasts an extensive Italian wine selection as well as Arizona wines and varietals from around the world. Happy hour features half-priced glasses of wine, and all day, guests can enjoy wine flights.

Looking around at his restaurant, Rana is pleased that so far North Phoenix seems to enjoy it, too.

“When we opened the doors, family were coming in. Senior citizens were coming in.

Everyone came in and seemed excited to just be out at a restaurant. We’ve been working on this for more than a year, and it got pushed back. It’s just nice to see people in here who have already become regulars.”

Benefits of Pool Workouts How they can do much more than cool you down

ummer is officially here. Think of backyard barbecues with friends and family, watching sunsets on the deck with a cool drink, and lots of fun in the sun.

But one of the biggest things that always comes to mind when the temperatures start to climb is, “Where can I find a pool to beat the heat?”

Pools are social, fun and great exercise all in one. The pool is always a great way to get a workout, sometimes without even realizing you’re burning calories.

A workout for everyone It doesn’t matter if you are a kid, middle-aged or a senior—pool workouts can benefit all of them. You will get a wholebody workout in the water and can focus on building strength in your core, legs, arms, back and booty. Because the water surrounds your body and adds extra resistance without impact, you are able to do many things safely in the water that you may not be able to do on land. It can provide a cardio and resistance workout all in one without the added pressure on your joints, ligaments and bones.

Get back in the game Water workouts can also be an amazing way to start a workout routine for the first time or after an extended period of time being more sedentary. Recently, we’ve all been through a strange time when we have been stuck in the house and unable to get to the gym, and many people have fallen off

the fitness wagon.

If you’ve let your regular workouts fall by the wayside—or maybe you’ve never really been a workout person—now’s the chance to use the pool to your advantage and start a fantastic program to get into the best shape of your life. There are literally hundreds of different exercises you can do in the water that are fun and will get you real results.

Pools are open and accessible to the public, all practicing social distancing guidelines and additional sanitation and safety measures. Most EōS Fitness locations have pools, as do local neighborhood community pools and recreation centers.

Don’t overdo it Even if you are a world-class athlete, too much strenuous high-impact training can lead to injury and pain. This is where the pool can benefit even the most extreme fitness fanatics.

A pool workout is great to mix in with

your other workouts so that you can continue to train hard—but make sure you’re not hard on your body.

The pool is also a great chance for people who suffer from chronic injuries to be able to get great exercise without the pain or the risk of re-injuring themselves. Pool workouts are a wonderful way to rehabilitate injuries so you don’t have to sit on the sidelines while you are recovering.

Body Talk How can I manage healthy eating intuitively?

quick google search for “diets” will give you endless results. We talked about that in the blog on intermittent fasting. Everyone wants to tell you what foods you should eat, how much to eat and what foods you should avoid all together.

But when you think about it, who knows best what your body needs? You! No other human is present in your body for a single moment. All the nutritional education in the world can’t actually compete with the knowledge you naturally have about the needs and wants of your body.

Enter intuitive eating.

Intuitive eating doesn’t involve counting calories, macros, “good” or “bad” foods, or even telling you when to eat like intermittent fasting does. It removes all of that and focuses more on your relationship with food, how it makes you feel, and really honing in on being

able to identify and honor your body’s true hunger needs.

It might seem daunting. What if I wake up one morning and really feel like my body could use some chocolate cake? Well, it’s possible it does. But more likely, if you’re really in tune with your body and its signals for hunger, you’ll be able to dig deeper and see if what you’re actually feeling isn’t true hunger for chocolate cake but perhaps boredom, sadness, loneliness or fear. Or simply wanting a piece of chocolate cake because it sounds delicious (no good or bad foods, remember?)

This type of relationship with your body won’t happen overnight. Psychologist and author of “When Your Teen Has an Eating Disorder: Practical Strategies to Help Your Teen Recover from Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating” Lauren Muhlheim says, “As with any relationship, it takes time to build your body’s trust that it can really have what it wants and needs.” You’ve got to trust the process.

So how does it work?

In their primer on rejecting traditional diet mentality and following our bodies (aptly named Intuitive Eating), registered dietitian nurses Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch outline the 10 principles of Intuitive Eating to help give you a place to start.

1. Reject the diet mentality Realize that any diet, whether scientifically sound for weight loss and health or not, is nowhere near as personalized for you as your own knowledge of your body. You have to completely reject the idea that there’s going to be some magic set of rules that will bring you life-long results.

2. Honor your hunger Find the signals your body naturally produces when it is beginning to be hungry and eat then. Don’t wait until you’re starving, because you will mostly likely overeat.

Pay attention to what kind of hunger you’re feeling—emotional or physical. One can be quenched by food; the other will probably only make you feel worse when you eat because of it.

3. Make peace with food No list of forbidden foods. No “good” or “bad” that you can give in to. No depriving yourself of certain foods. This leads to overeating every single time. Tribole and Resch say, “Give yourself unconditional permission to eat.”

4. Challenge the food police This one is similar to No. 3 but really emphasizes the emotions that come with food.

Kick “food guilt” to the curb. It’s not serving

you. Acknowledge how eating something made you feel in the long run and decide if you want to feel like that again.

5. Discover the satisfaction factor I can’t say it better than the authors. “In our compulsion to comply with diet culture, we often overlook one of the most basic gifts of existence—the pleasure and satisfaction that can be found in the eating experience. When you eat what you really want ... the pleasure you derive will be a powerful force in helping you feel satisfied and content. By providing this experience for yourself, you will find that it takes just the right amount of food for you to decide you’ve had ‘enough.’”

Take your time and enjoy what you eat.

6. Feel your fullness Similarly to honoring your hunger, you’ve got to honor your fullness as well. Trusting that you’ve given your body the fuel it needs with the flavors you desire leads you to trust your body to show you when you’re comfortably full. When you don’t deprive yourself of the foods you really want, you don’t feel the need to eat until you’re stuffed, because you know you can eat it again whenever you want.

7. Cope with your emotions with kindness Going back to why you’re hungry in the

first place—is it based out of a physical need?

Then eat up. Is it based on an emotional need?

Then survey what you’re feeling and why and realize that no food will change or heal those emotions in the long run.

8. Respect your body We were all created differently. Two people could eat the same foods and do the same workouts for their entire life and they a) won’t feel the same after doing either activ-

ity and b) still won’t have the same physical makeup. About 20% body fat may be the healthiest one person can realistically ever get down to while another might be feeling extremely sluggish in their body if it ever gets over 15%. We’re all different and need to treat ourselves as such. Everybody deserves dignity.

9. Movement— Feel the difference This one is my favorite. Exercising for the sake of how it makes you feel rather than how it makes you look. For the sake of what it does to your mindset instead of how many calories it burns. We should use food to fuel our body for all the movement we want to do, rather than using exercise to punish our body for the food we ate.

10. Honor your health— Gentle nutrition Essentially, give yourself grace. One meal, day or week of less-than-optimal eating isn’t going to ruin your life. But small habits every day will build the routine and mindset you need to hit your goals and have a life full of healthy choices.
